Apple to Launch Smart Home Hub With AI, Built-In Camera by the End of This Year: Gurman
Apple to Launch Smart Home Hub With AI, Built-In Camera by the End of This Year: Gurman
Apple has long been rumoured to revamp its smart home device lineup with a new tabletop device that can move around a user’s desk and has a robotic arm. However before this purported device is introduced to the market, the Cupertino-based tech giant may introduce a lower-end version that cuts down on several marquee features to retain a lower price tag. A seasoned journalist claims that the purported smart home hub could make its debut by the end of the year, equipped with a tablet-like display, camera, support for Apple Intelligence, and a new operating system (OS).
Apple’s New Smart Home Hub Launch
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s smart home hub with a robotic arm, with the codename J595, is part of its plans to introduce AI-centric devices. With a screen size similar to an iPad, the purported device could have a robotic arm attached at the end, with the ability to move around on the user’s desk. The journalist claims Apple aims to incorporate a “unique AI personality” in this device and while it wanted to get this to the markets soon, these plans have taken a hit.
However, that does not mean the company’s plans have been shelved. In the meantime, a lower-end version of the smart home device will be launched by the end of the year, as per Gurman. With the codename J490, it is reported to come with a 7-inch screen with a form factor that appears like a square iPad. There’s a camera at the top, while it may also feature internal speakers, a built-in battery, and support for Apple Intelligence features.
The journalist claims this purported device may function like an AI wall tablet, enabling users to control it with a touch interface, which in itself is said to be a mixture of watchOS which powers the Apple Watch and the iPhone’s Standby mode. It is also reported to mark the debut of the iPhone maker’s new OS dubbed homeOS.
Its debut this year will be followed by the introduction of the tabletop smart home device with a robotic arm “a year or two later”. To get it ready in time for production, Apple is said to have cut down on some features which we may see in its future iterations. While official details still remain under wraps, the company aims to make a name in the smart home device market after losing ground to the likes of Amazon and Google which offer Alexa and Nest devices, respectively.

Rate cut hammers in immediate spike in home auctions
Rate cut hammers in immediate spike in home auctions
Auction clearance rates jumped immediately after the Reserve Bank’s second interest rate cut of the year, in a sign home buyers are regaining confidence.
The volume of auctions held in capital cities surged more than 40 per cent to 2512 last week, with 71.3 per cent reported as sold, according to property data analytics firm Cotality.
That’s the second-highest preliminary clearance rate in 2025, only topped by the 72.1 per cent rate in the week following the RBA’s February rate cut.
On the ground, it’s clear confidence is returning but affordability constraints remain.
Many vendors still had to adjust their reserves lower to get a ***** over the line, observed Sydney-based auctioneer Clarence White.
“We got more things done, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that prices are knocking it out of the ballpark,” he told AAP.
Strength in the Melbourne market underpinned the recovery, with almost three quarters of homes under the hammer recording a successful auction.
Meanwhile, Sydney’s preliminary clearance rate passed 70 per cent for the first time in 10 weeks.
While buyer confidence improved, sellers’ expectations are in many cases still above what the market is willing to pay.
Property owners who bought a home within the last few years were holding out for ***** prices significantly above what they paid, to compensate for charges such as stamp duty, Mr White said.
However, in most cases they are selling for about the same price they paid.
“One of the things we’ve been battling for quite a while is sellers with expectations above the market,” he said.
He anticipates prices to recover throughout the year as interest rates come down further and buyer sentiment continues to improve.
But economic uncertainty was still having an impact.
Confidence crashed after Donald Trump’s ‘liberation day’ tariffs smashed financial markets, with some clients telling Mr White they had lost $50,000 in a week.
Clearance rates drifted lower following the February rate cut, as “exuberance” left the market, before finding a floor at 64.2 per cent in the last week of April, said Cotality research director Tim Lawless.
The Housing Industry Association reported new home sales rose 16.5 per cent to a 12-month high in April, following the RBA’s first cut, which shaved approximately $90 off monthly interest repayments for a borrower with a median mortgage of about $600,000.
As well as increased borrowing capacity, low unemployment, rising real wages and ongoing population growth helped boost activity, said HIA economist Maurice Tapang.
“New home sales data have signalled that home building may be past its trough, confirming our expectations of a pick-up in activity in 2025,” he said.
*********** home values rose 0.3 per cent in April, setting a record median price of $825,349, Cotality found.
After a brief downturn at the end of 2024, it was the third consecutive month of growth.

Southeast Asian nations want to discuss tariffs with Trump as a unified bloc, Malaysia PM says
Southeast Asian nations want to discuss tariffs with Trump as a unified bloc, Malaysia PM says
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Southeast Asian nations will forge a common front to face challenges including economic headwinds from U.S. tariffs and a four-year civil war in Myanmar, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday.
Opening an annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Anwar said he is seeking a unified bloc meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the tariffs. Officials are hopeful it could happen later this year. Malaysia is the current chair of ASEAN.
“For ASEAN, our peace, stability and prosperity have often depended on an open, inclusive, rules-based international order… These foundations are now being dismantled under the force of arbitrary action,” Anwar said.
ASEAN has formed a taskforce to coordinate a response to the U.S. tariffs in parallel with bilateral negotiations by some member countries, Anwar said. ASEAN members include ******* economies such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, as well as ones like Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
The region relies on exports to the U.S. and is hurt by the Trump administration’s tariffs, which range from 10% for Singapore to as high as 49% for Cambodia. Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs in April for most of the world, and this month struck a similar deal with key rival China, easing trade war tensions.
Anwar said an ASEAN leaders’ meeting on Tuesday with ******** Premier Li Qiang and the Gulf Cooperation Council — the first such tripartite meeting — would spur new cooperation that could help insulate ASEAN’s economy. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The bloc later Monday will launch a new 20-year vision to deepen their economic and social integration, Anwar said.
Anwar also said Malaysia has managed to “move the needle forward” in efforts to resolve the Myanmar crisis after forming an informal advisory group headed by former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra. Anwar met last month with Myanmar military chief Gen. Ming Aung Hlaing in Bangkok and held virtual talks with the opposition National Unity Government.
Officials said the current emphasis on aid delivery following a March earthquake that killed 3,700 people could eventually pave the way for peace talks. But critics accuse the army of violating a self-proclaimed ceasefire with dozens of airstrikes, with aid not freely allowed into areas not under the army’s control.
The Myanmar war, which has killed thousands and displaced millions, is a challenge to ASEAN since refugees have fled across borders to neighboring nations. The region has also seen rising transnational crimes and cybercrimes. The bloc has made little headway after the Myanmar military refused to comply with its peace plan, including a ceasefire, delivery of humanitarian aid and negotiations.
Anwar said more engagement is being planned in Myanmar.
“Quiet engagement matters. The steps may be small and the bridge may be fragile but as they say: In matters of peace, even a fragile bridge is better than a widening gulf,” Anwar said.
Thomas Daniel from Malaysia’s Institute of Strategic and International Studies said ASEAN has no real leverage to push for reconciliation. The Myanmar military has reportedly lost control of a large part of the country, making the situation even more challenging.
“The conditions on the ground are extremely difficult. I don’t think we have reached a stage where ASEAN can facilitate any kind of political dialogue between conflicting parties. They are not ready for that yet,” he said.

3 Reasons Why Todd Howard Can’t Do ‘Fallout 1 Remaster’: Creator Tim Cain Reveals
3 Reasons Why Todd Howard Can’t Do ‘Fallout 1 Remaster’: Creator Tim Cain Reveals
The Fallout series is one of the best franchises in the entire gaming industry. With its bleak yet hilariously quirky world, the Fallout games have always entertained the masses. The most influential game in the entire series was the original game, which was released back in 1977.
Although being critically acclaimed and considered by many as the best RPG game of all time, the original Fallout is nowhere close to a remaster, but why is that? Let’s delve deeper into this and find out.
A remaster of the original Fallout game might not happen
Fallout was an RPG game that was developed and published by Interplay Productions back in 1997. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic and retro-futuristic world where a global nuclear war between the United States and China has wiped out everything except dust and rubble. The game’s intricate lore and world-building are one of its key selling points.
The game was a commercial success, selling more than half a million copies and even being cited as the greatest video game of all time by many. While the newer Fallout games (post-2008) feel like a treat to play, veteran fans of the series are hoping for a remaster of the original two games, which might not be possible according to the co-creator of the franchise, Tim Cain.
Recently, Cain shared a video on his YouTube channel discussing about all the potential challenges that they might face if they started working on a Fallout remaster. In his video explained that there are three main categories of problems, which are “legal issues, technical issues, and subjective issues”.
From a legal point of view, Cain had to delete the source code of the game after he left Interplay, and he even mentioned how he deleted all the early prototypes and libraries as well which housed some of his own toy projects. From a technical perspective, he talked about how there are bugs in the game that made the title feel more alive, and he cannot decide which ones to fix and which ones to keep.
Cain talks about the subjective issues, which include whether he should add new dialogue or not, and potentially needing to replace actors who have passed away. He also talks about whether or not he should change the visual and gameplay mechanics of the title, which would make the game better but would take away the nostalgic feeling.
It’s not just these three reasons that are holding Cain back

While a Fallout remaster sounds like music to many long-time fans, it is not just legal or technical hurdles holding it back, but also the challenge of preserving the true essence of the original game. A remaster risks altering these memories and potentially alienating the very audience it is hoping to please.
Despite Cain’s connection to the series, he has refused to make any definitive statement on his video about whether a remaster of the original game will ever hit the video game space or not.
Moreover, while Cain would love to see a remaster of the original Fallout, the sheer resources this project would take to succeed will definitely be too much, and the potential to upset longtime fans is a risk even Cain would not take.

AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft: East Fremantle ruckman Lachlan Blakiston in the sights of Essendon
AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft: East Fremantle ruckman Lachlan Blakiston in the sights of Essendon
East Fremantle ruckman Lachlan Blakiston is firming as a strong option for Essendon in the mid-season rookie draft on Wednesday.
The West *********** understands Bombers officials were at Leederville Oval on Saturday to watch Blakiston take on East Perth bigman and former Fremantle ruckman Scott Jones as they weigh up their options.
Essendon are a chance to take four players on Wednesday as they deal with a serious injury crisis, with the Bombers in desperate need of ruck depth after season-ending injuries to Sam Draper (Achilles) and Nick Bryan (knee).
It left coach Brad Scott to use 36-year-old Todd Goldstein as the No.1 ruckman in the past four weeks.
The two rucks are part of the 10 players who are 190cm or taller that are on the Bombers’ injury list including Zach Reid (hamstring), Nik Cox (concussion) and key defender Ben McKay (foot).
Such is their injury crisis, there are reports that the Bombers could get AFL approval to draft a player on Wednesday and play them against Brisbane at the Gabba only 24 hours later.
Blakiston was on the radar of several clubs leading into last year’s draft including St Kilda and Geelong before he was ultimately overlooked.
The 26-year-old emerged as a genuine AFL talent in the middle of last year when he became the No.1 ruckman at the Sharks when Brynn Teakle was picked up in last year’s mid-season rookie draft.

Blakiston averaged 16.6 disposals, 11 contested, 34 hit-outs, 8.5 to advantage, six clearances and five score involvements in 13 games last year but a shoulder injury delayed his start to this season.
The 204cm Shark has returned to average 13 disposals and 21 hit-outs and battled manfully against a *******-bodied Jones, with a goal from nine disposals and 25 hit-outs.
Blakiston isn’t the only WAFL ruckman on the Bombers’ radar, with Claremont star Ollie Eastland also believed to be on their whiteboard.
Eastland kicked a career-high three goals from 14 disposals and 47 hit-outs in the Tigers’ 42-point win over Swan Districts in Bassendean on Saturday.
The 27-year-old was watched by Bombers officials including list boss Matt Rosa while they were in town to take on West Coast on Friday, April 18.
Eastland — who is listed as 199cm and 100kg — had 41 hit-outs, 15 disposals, eight tackle and three clearances against Jones in a near best-on-ground performance.
Southport co-captain Brayden Crossley is the other ruckman believed to be in contention but there are reports clubs are concerned with the former Gold Coast bigman’s ability to cover the ground.
Several recruiters are understood to have watched Peel Thunder defender Michael Sellwood in the loss to Perth at Mineral Resources Park.
The premiership star has been put through a medical by the Western Bulldogs and met with Port Adelaide on Friday as he firms as a strong chance to finally get a chance on an AFL list.
Subiaco forward Archer May didn’t play at the weekend as he is considered an almost certainty to be recruited by a club.
North Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton are all viewed as clubs with strong interest in the 198cm Victorian who joined the Lions before the start of the season.

3 Chilean nationals suspected in Middle TN burglaries arrested in Chattanooga
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) — A traffic stop in Chattanooga Friday resulted in the arrests of three suspects in Middle Tennessee burglaries, authorities said.
According to the Brentwood Police Department, detectives noticed last week that a burglary in the Witherspoon subdivision was consistent with other recent burglaries in Brentwood and Nashville. A joint investigation with the Metro Nashville Police Department and other law enforcement agencies led to the identification of suspects associated with the incidents.
PREVIOUS: Brentwood police advise residents to be on the lookout for burglary suspects
Officials said a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle in Chattanooga on Friday, May 23. Three men inside the vehicle allegedly provided false Peruvian identification to the trooper.
A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of burglary tools and clothing consistent with a Brentwood burglary and recent burglary attempts in Brentwood and Nashville, as well as suspected stolen jewelry. Additionally, authorities said the men were in possession of Rolex watches that were stolen from a Missouri home.
Law enforcement identified the men as Genaro Arturo Arenas Jara, Nicholas Maximiliano Martinez Hidalgo, and Valentino Amaro Bouffanais — all of Chile. Police said all three men are wanted for crimes related to 2023 residential burglaries in California.
Read today’s top stories on wkrn.com
The men were arrested and brought to the Hamilton County Jail, where they’re being held pending Tennessee, California, and federal charges, according to officials.
“The Brentwood Police Department is thankful for the assistance of the Metro Nashville Police Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and our other law enforcement partners,” Brentwood Police Chief Jim Colvin said. “BPD officers and detectives worked around the clock on this investigation. Our residents should feel safe in their homes knowing members of this criminal organization have been identified and arrested.”
No additional details have been released about this investigation.

Thanks to a countrywide ban that will go into effect in June, single-use vape pens will no longer be available for purchase in the United Kingdom.
In an attempt to reduce the growing amount of waste and pollution stemming from single-use vapes, the U.K. will soon ban businesses from selling or stocking disposable vape products regardless of whether they contain nicotine. The ban applies to sales in shops and online.
Rechargeable or reusable vape pens will still be legal to sell or stock in retail locations.
Councilor Iskandar Jefferies, chairman of the Joint Public Protection Committee, offered an explanation for the ban on single-use vapes. “They are a waste of valuable resources and are often discarded improperly, releasing harmful substances into the environment and posing fire hazards in landfills and in waste removal vehicles,” Jefferies told The Reading Chronicle.
According to a report by Material Focus, about 8.2 million disposable vapes are littered every week in the U.K. That equates to roughly one vape discarded every 13 seconds. While 20% of consumers recycled their single-use vapes in store in 2024, hundreds of millions of vape pens are estimated to wind up in landfills or scattered throughout the environment.
Disposable vapes pose a significant environmental threat due to their nonbiodegradable and often hazardous materials, including lithium. These devices contribute to plastic pollution, release toxic chemicals into the environment, and add to the growing e-waste concern.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
Statista reported that the U.K. will see an estimated $4.2 billion in sales of e-cigarettes in 2025. Given that such a large chunk of money is attached to vape pens, Jefferies acknowledged that some local businesses will experience significant impacts on their yearly revenues. However, the primary concern remains the health of the environment.
“We are urging local businesses to plan accordingly and ensure that they have the necessary arrangements in place to dispose of unsold products ahead of the deadline,” Jefferies said.

China’s capacitor-free coil gun can fire 3,000 projectiles a minute, outpacing rivals
China’s capacitor-free coil gun can fire 3,000 projectiles a minute, outpacing rivals
State-owned arms maker China South Industries Group (CSGC) has released footage of its electromagnetic coil gun. Allegedly capable of firing 3,000 rounds per minute, the prototype represents a major technical leap in portable directed-energy weaponry.
Once perfected, the new weapon could play a key role in military and law enforcement applications. A coil gun is a linear motor that uses electromagnets to accelerate a projectile to high velocity.
It’s essentially a type of mass driver in which the projectile is launched by magnetic forces rather than traditional gunpowder or explosives. According to reports, the new ******** weapon uses lithium-ion batteries instead of conventional capacitors to power the electromagnetic coils.
This weapon debuts just a few years after another ******** coil gun, the CS/LW21, was unveiled in 2023. Another handheld electromagnetic coil gun, the CS/LW21 was developed by China North Industries Group (Norinco) for riot control and non-lethal use. This weapon uses a nine-stage coil array powered by an internal lithium-ion battery to fire coin-shaped projectiles without traditional gunpowder.
Far surpasses the AK-47
However, the newest coil gun developed by PLA’s Army Engineering University features an unprecedented capacitor-free design that allows for sustained rapid fire, a historical limitation in coil gun development. As per a report in the South China Morning Post, the new weapon is equipped with twenty 1-inch (20mm) long sequential copper coils in a bullpup configuration (similar in appearance to a Belgian P90).
When a steel projectile or armature is accelerated through these coils using carefully timed magnetic pulses, semiconductor switches precisely control power delivery down to nanoseconds. AI-akin timing algorithms then optimize the magnetic acceleration window to minimize energy waste and reverse drag.
Other key features of the gun include special safety fuses to prevent battery overload during 750A current spikes, finite element simulations optimising coil triggers to milliseconds, and heat dissipation engineering that limits the battery’s temperature rise.
During testing, the weapon reportedly fired up to 3,000 rounds per minute (rpm), far surpassing traditional firearms. That is significantly higher than conventional firearms like the AK-47, which fires around 600 rpm. It also benefits from silent firing, no muzzle flash, and adjustable lethality.
From crowd control to militarization
Currently, the test model clocks a projectile velocity of about 282 ft/s (86 m/s), which is fast but modest compared to conventional firearms. Although, it will prove sufficient for non-lethal roles like riot control.
“Continuous high-speed fire deters approaching threats and overwhelms enemy reactions, which is ideal for riot control,” observed the research team led by professor Xiang Hongjun from Army Engineering University. “Other advantages include no muzzle flash, silent operation, and adjustable lethality, making it ideal for ‘covert missions’,” they added.
With scaling and improved battery power, the team is confident the gun could transition to lethal battlefield roles (e.g., drones, automated turrets, or infantry weapons).
If matured and militarized, China could lead the race to deploy next-generation small arms that use electromagnetic propulsion instead of chemical reactions. While not yet a battlefield-ready killer, it hints at a future where silent, ultra-fast electromagnetic projectiles could replace bullets.

My telescope, set up for astrophotography in my light-polluted San Diego backyard, was pointed at a galaxy unfathomably far from Earth. My wife, Cristina, walked up just as the first space photo streamed to my tablet. It sparkled on the screen in front of us.
“That’s the Pinwheel galaxy,” I said. The name is derived from its shape – albeit this pinwheel contains about a trillion stars.
The light from the Pinwheel traveled for 25 million years across the universe – about 150 quintillion miles – to get to my telescope.
My wife wondered: “Doesn’t light get tired during such a long journey?”
Her curiosity triggered a thought-provoking conversation about light. Ultimately, why doesn’t light wear out and lose energy over time?
Let’s talk about light
I am an astrophysicist, and one of the first things I learned in my studies is how light often behaves in ways that defy our intuitions.
Light is electromagnetic radiation: basically, an electric wave and a magnetic wave coupled together and traveling through space-time. It has no mass. That point is critical because the mass of an object, whether a speck of dust or a spaceship, limits the top speed it can travel through space.
But because light is massless, it’s able to reach the maximum speed limit in a vacuum – about 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) per second, or almost 6 trillion miles per year (9.6 trillion kilometers). Nothing traveling through space is faster. To put that into perspective: In the time it takes you to blink your eyes, a particle of light travels around the circumference of the Earth more than twice.
As incredibly fast as that is, space is incredibly spread out. Light from the Sun, which is 93 million miles (about 150 million kilometers) from Earth, takes just over eight minutes to reach us. In other words, the sunlight you see is eight minutes old.
Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to us after the Sun, is 26 trillion miles away (about 41 trillion kilometers). So by the time you see it in the night sky, its light is just over four years old. Or, as astronomers say, it’s four light years away.

With those enormous distances in mind, consider Cristina’s question: How can light travel across the universe and not slowly lose energy?
Actually, some light does lose energy. This happens when it bounces off something, such as interstellar dust, and is scattered about.
But most light just goes and goes, without colliding with anything. This is almost always the case because space is mostly empty – nothingness. So there’s nothing in the way.
When light travels unimpeded, it loses no energy. It can maintain that 186,000-mile-per-second speed forever.
It’s about time
Here’s another concept: Picture yourself as an astronaut on board the International Space Station. You’re orbiting at 17,000 miles (about 27,000 kilometers) per hour. Compared with someone on Earth, your wristwatch will tick 0.01 seconds slower over one year.
That’s an example of time dilation – time moving at different speeds under different conditions. If you’re moving really fast, or close to a large gravitational field, your clock will tick more slowly than someone moving slower than you, or who is further from a large gravitational field. To say it succinctly, time is relative.
Even astronauts aboard the International Space Station experience time dilation, although the effect is extremely small. | Credit: NASA
Now consider that light is inextricably connected to time. Picture sitting on a photon, a fundamental particle of light; here, you’d experience maximum time dilation. Everyone on Earth would clock you at the speed of light, but from your reference frame, time would completely stop.
That’s because the “clocks” measuring time are in two different places going vastly different speeds: the photon moving at the speed of light, and the comparatively slowpoke speed of Earth going around the Sun.
What’s more, when you’re traveling at or close to the speed of light, the distance between where you are and where you’re going gets shorter. That is, space itself becomes more compact in the direction of motion – so the faster you can go, the shorter your journey has to be. In other words, for the photon, space gets squished.

Which brings us back to my picture of the Pinwheel galaxy. From the photon’s perspective, a star within the galaxy emitted it, and then a single pixel in my backyard camera absorbed it, at exactly the same time. Because space is squished, to the photon the journey was infinitely fast and infinitely short, a tiny fraction of a second.
But from our perspective on Earth, the photon left the galaxy 25 million years ago and traveled 25 million light years across space until it landed on my tablet in my backyard.
And there, on a cool spring night, its stunning image inspired a delightful conversation between a nerdy scientist and his curious wife.

At least 24 Palestinians have been killed in two separate Israeli air strikes overnight, including a strike on a school sheltering displaced families in central Gaza, according to medics and civil defence officials.
The strike targeted Fahmi Al-Jargawi School in Gaza City, which had been housing hundreds of displaced people who fled the northern town of Beit Lahia, currently under intense Israeli military assault.
A spokesperson for Gaza’s ******-run Civil Defence agency said 20 bodies, including children, were recovered from the school – many of them severely burned – after fires engulfed two classrooms turned into living quarters.
The Israeli military has been contacted for comment.
“Flames were everywhere. I saw charred bodies lying on the ground,” said Rami Rafiq, a resident living across from the school, in a phone call with BBC. “My son fainted when he saw the horrific scene.”
Video footage shared online showed large fires consuming parts of the school, with graphic images of severely burned victims, including children, and survivors suffering critical injuries.
Local reports said among the dead was Mohammad Al-Kasih, the head of investigations for the ****** police in northern Gaza, along with his wife and children.
Shortly before the school strike, another Israeli air strike hit a home in central Gaza City, killing four more people, the ******-run health ministry said.
The twin attacks are part of a broader Israeli offensive that has escalated in the northern part of the enclave over the past week.
On Friday, an Israeli strike on the home of a ************ doctor in Gaza killed nine of her 10 children. Dr Alaa al-Najjar’s 11-year-old son was injured, along with her husband, Hamdi al-Najjar, who is in critical condition.
The nine children – Yahya, Rakan, Raslan, Gebran, Eve, Rival, Sayden, Luqman and Sidra – were aged between just a few months old and 12. The Israeli military has said the incident is under review.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross said two of its staff were killed in a strike on their home in Khan Younis on Saturday.
The killing of Ibrahim Eid, a weapon contamination officer, and Ahmad Abu Hilal, a security guard at the Red Cross Field Hospital in Rafah “points to the intolerable civilian death toll in Gaza”, the ICRC said, repeating its call for a ceasefire.
On Sunday, the head of a controversial US and Israeli-approved organisation that sought to use private firms to deliver aid to Gaza resigned.
In a statement by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, executive director Jake Wood said it had become apparent that plans to set up distribution hubs would not meet the “humanitarian principles” of independence and neutrality.
Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza on 2 March that lasted 11 weeks before it allowed limited aid to enter the territory in the face of warnings of famine and mounting international outrage.
Israeli military body Cogat said on Saturday morning that 388 trucks carrying aid had entered Gaza since Monday. The UN says much more aid – between 500 to 600 trucks a day – is needed.
Meanwhile, 20 countries and organisations met in Madrid on Sunday to discuss ending the war in Gaza. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares called for an arms embargo on Israel if it did not stop its attacks.
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to ******’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 53,939 people, including at least 16,500 children, have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s health ministry.
