You can now stream some Xbox games you own, but you still need Game Pass Ultimate You can now stream some Xbox games you own, but you still need Game Pass Ultimate Microsoft has announced a long-anticipated feature for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting today, you’ll be able to stream select games that you own on TVs and Meta Quest VR headsets, as well as supported browsers on phones, tablets and PCs in every country where Xbox Cloud Gaming is available. Microsoft plans to expand the feature to Xbox consoles and the Windows Xbox app next year. You’ll still need to be an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member to use this feature, but it means that you’re no longer limited to streaming only the games that are on that service. The “stream your own game” option includes support for 50 titles at the outset, with more to be added later. You can stream the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Stray, The Witcher 3, Balatro, Animal Well, NBA 2K25, Baldur’s Gate 3 and several Final Fantasy games. Just look for the “stream your own game” section on Cloud Gaming. An Xbox spokesperson confirmed to Engadget that “streaming the games you own requires a digitally purchased game.” So, you won’t be able to stream a physical copy of, say, Farming Simulator 25 via this feature, but if you have the disc in your Xbox Series X, remote play is still an option. Although it’s broadly good that people have more ways to play their games, this move lines up with Xbox inching toward an all-digital future — one in which gamers without access to fast, reliable Internet connections may be left behind. This also lets Xbox expand its cloud gaming offerings without having to necessarily pay third-party developers and publishers big bucks to get their projects on Game Pass proper. The stream your own game initiative also ties into Microsoft’s new ad campaign about all kinds of devices being an Xbox when they are, in fact, not. The rollout comes a day after Sony started publicly testing a cloud gaming option on PlayStation Portal, a feature that the device should have had from the beginning. The Wall Street firm looked at new regulatory filings from the 15 largest tech companies in its coverage and then figured out each firm’s average weighting within the top 100 actively managed institutional portfolios. Morgan Stanley thinks that stocks tend to experience a technical pull higher when active ownership is much lower than their weightings in the S & P 500, and vice versa. The gap between Microsoft’s S & P 500 weighting and institutional ownership stood at 2.08% by the end of the third quarter, making it the most under-owned Big Tech name, Morgan Stanley said. Shares of Microsoft have underperformed the broader market significantly this year, up about 10% versus the S & P 500’s nearly 24% advance in 2024. The company recently released a forecast that called for slower growth than expected. Outside suppliers are late in delivering data center infrastructure to Microsoft. This means the company won’t be able to meet demand in the fiscal second quarter. After Microsoft, Apple is the second-most under-owned megacap tech stock coming out of the third quarter. The iPhone maker has also lagged the broader market this year with an 18% gain. On the flip side, the most over-owned tech stock at the end of September is software company Intuit , which could see a technical downward pull soon, according to Morgan Stanley. Intuit, which makes the TurboTax tax filing software, saw its shares fall more than 5% on Tuesday after a report said President-elect Donald Trump ‘s government efficiency team is considering creating a free tax filing app. The stock is up just 3% in 2024. The ratio of unique sellers-to-buyers among S & P 500 companies is 23.7-to-1 in the fourth quarter — the highest level since digital disclosures of insider trades were first mandated back in 2004, according to data from VerityData. The full-quarter record so far is 23.6-to-1 reached in the second quarter of 2021. The average since 2004 is just under 12-to-1. The data includes trades made under preplanned 10b5-1 trading plans. There are three main reasons for the increase in sales postelection, according to Ben Silverman, director of research at VerityData. First, executives are bound by trading restrictions ahead of company earnings reports. The election came near the beginning of the bulk of companies reporting their third quarter earnings, so postearnings sales have jumped as trading windows have opened. Second, market performance has major indexes hitting record levels, and many executives want to lock in gains ahead of any near-term volatility. Plus, many 10b5-1 trading plans are price-triggered meaning that executives select levels at which to sell shares. Lastly, the election results could be spurring executives to sell, Silverman said. Executives at private education firm Grand Canyon Education have sold an aggregate $2.3 million worth of shares in the fourth quarter, per Verity. The research highlights how these large predators, also known as pumas or cougars, are adapting their natural activity patterns to minimise encounters with humans who frequent their habitats for hiking, cycling, and jogging. These behavioural shifts show and highlight the challenges faced by wildlife coexisting with urban populations. Study Reveals Shifts in Activity Patterns The study, led by Ellie Bolas, a doctoral researcher at the University of California, Davis, analysed data collected from 22 GPS-collared mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains between 2011 and 2018. Using exercise activity data from the online platform Strava, the team compared human recreational patterns with the movements of the collared mountain lions. The findings revealed that mountain lions in areas with higher human activity shifted their peak activity times from dawn and dusk to night. This behavioural flexibility allows the predators to avoid human presence while continuing to hunt and carry out other essential behaviours. Broader Implications for Wildlife and Coexistence The phenomenon of animals becoming more nocturnal to evade humans is not exclusive to mountain lions. There have been similar trends observed before globally among other mammals. Research conducted in 2019 indicated that even the sound of human voices could deter mountain lions, demonstrating the deep-seated wariness of humans among these animals due to historical persecution. Mountain lions in urban areas like Los Angeles face additional pressures, including habitat fragmentation, wildfires and low genetic diversity. The study highlights recreational activities as a potential stressor, affecting the energy they expend on hunting and survival. Bolas emphasised the importance of recognising these adaptations, stating that coexistence relies on the flexibility exhibited by wildlife. Despite the challenges, mountain lions continue to adjust to human activity, demonstrating resilience in shared landscapes. No one seems to understand that better than Infinition who’s put together a really cool project called Bjorn. This clever creation works as a useful network tool for ************ (pen) testing and the like but it also doubles as a fun experience thanks to its game-like user interface. Bjorn is a full-fledged network assessment system but it’s also the name of the little Viking character that appears on the display. As you perform certain tasks, he has various graphics that correspond with the features. Bjorn also levels up as you continue to use the system based on what you do with the system. Outside of the Tamagotchi-like user interface, it’s been programmed with a handful of useful features. You can use Bjorn to scan networks for open ports and check for vulnerabilities. It can also carry out system attacks by brute forcing a myriad of protocols like FTP, SSH, etc. Bjorn can also ransack networks and steal their loot—or rather it can implement file stealing using vulnerabilities detected in the network. While the compatibility works with both the older and new model Pi Zero, it’s necessary to have aboard with wireless support. That said, we’ve seen evidence of other makers successfully running Bjorn on a Raspberry Pi 3B+. Infinition recommends connecting the Pi to a Waveshare 2.13-inch e-Ink display hat for visual output. If you’re excited about this creation — you should be and you’re in luck! Infinition has decided to make the project entirely open source, so you can recreate it yourself at home with your own Raspberry Pi. And when it comes to Thanksgiving food, it seems Americans are getting relief on their grocery bills this year following a few years of escalating costs. A “classic” Thanksgiving feast for a party of 10 will cost $58.08 in 2024, on average — down 5% from 2023 and down 9% from 2022, according to the ********* Farm Bureau Federation, a trade group for farmers and ranchers. Its analysis includes turkey, cubed stuffing, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, frozen peas, fresh cranberries, celery, carrots, pumpkin pie mix and crusts, whipping cream and whole milk. Prices for this food basket were at a record high in 2022, at $64.05, the Farm Bureau said. Households that add ham, russet potatoes and frozen green beans into the mix would pay $77.34 in 2024, on average — an 8% decrease from 2023, the Farm Bureau said. The annual decline in prices will be welcome news to many households: Nearly half, 44%, of people hosting Thanksgiving this year are concerned about the cost of the event, according to a recent Deloitte survey. The decrease is largely due to various supply-and-demand dynamics driving down prices for key staples — turkey, most importantly — and an overarching decline in U.S. food inflation, according to economists. That’s because a 16-pound bird accounts for 44% of the overall Thanksgiving grocery bill, he said. The national average cost for a 16-pound turkey is down 6% from 2023, according to the Farm Bureau. Overall turkey prices have decreased about 4% in the past year, according to the consumer price index. Turkey has been a “curious item this year,” Nelson said. How to trim Thanksgiving costs Consumers looking to save money on their Thanksgiving meal in 2024 can do so by toggling between store brands and name brands for certain grocery items, according to Wenzel of the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute. A menu of completely store-brand items to feed 10 friends and family members would yield a total savings of $17, according to a Wells Fargo analysis. Consumers often pay a premium for name-brand items, but that’s not true in all cases this year. The BBC understands the regulator will say that any bonuses paid should be borne by owners and lenders to the company rather than paid by customers. Thames Water chief executive Chris Weston previously warned that the company only has enough cash to survive till next May but many think it will run out of money by Christmas. The announcement will come as part of an Ofwat update into executive pay and financial resilience across the sector. Ofwat has new powers to prevent bonuses being funded from customer bills if the company is judged to have missed environmental or performance targets. Weston, a former British Gas executive, was hired in January this year to try and turn around the fortunes of a company drowning in debts of £18bn. Over the summer it emerged that he had been awarded a bonus of £195,000 for his first three months at the company, taking his total pay for the ******* to £437,000. It’s not clear whether the bonus has in fact been paid out, but the regulator will insist that it is not paid by the operating company, and must be borne by the company owners. Thames Water declined to comment. In expectation of this approach other companies – including debt laden Southern Water – have already said shareholders rather than customers would pay bonuses to executives. But the problem for Thames is that it effectively has no shareholders. Earlier this year, Thames Water owners refused to follow through with a promised cash injection for the troubled company after Ofwat indicated it was not prepared to accept requests for bill rises of 44% above inflation over the next five years. In a preliminary decision, Ofwat said it would allow bill rises of 21% above inflation, which the shareholders did not accept. They walked away, effectively leaving the company under the control of its lenders. The majority of the lenders to Thames have offered to throw it a financial lifeline loan of up to £3bn if Ofwat agrees to customer bill rises of around 50% above inflation over the next five years. The lenders are currently finalising proposals for a restructuring of the company which would involve them taking a discount on the money they are owed, bringing in new operational expertise, and exploring the possibility of a break up and or public listing of the company. Yesterday, environment secretary Steve Reed, who was appearing before MPs, once again ruled out the nationalisation of Thames. In the past he has said it would cost taxpayers billions of pounds and take years. Reed said he believed the problems in the sector as a whole were ones of “regulation and governance” and he recently commissioned Sir John Cunliffe, former deputy governor of the bank of England, to conduct an independent review of the sector. That review is not due to report back until June of next year. The final determination of how much water companies can charge their customers for the next five years is expected on 19 December. Business Insider reports that Blackwell’s cooling design faults have already been addressed. Dylan Patel, chief analyst at Semianalysis, purportedly told Business Insider that Blackwell’s design issues, which have been present for months, have been largely addressed, stating that the overheating issues are largely overblown. Semianalysis’ five analysts monitoring the semiconductor industry reported that the cooling system issues triggering “reworks” from several suppliers were a “minor” change. Blackwell’s cooling faults have been specifically problematic with Nvidia’s massive 72-chip server rack, which can consume up to 120kW. Design flaws in the rack’s design have forced Nvidia to reevaluate its design multiple times due to the GPUs inside overheating. This has setback shipments of Nvidia’s GB200 hardware, causing additional delays due to the required design changes. Nvidia’s B200 GPUs are the most potent processing chips for AI workloads. The GB200 superchip, for instance, has a configurable TDP in the thousands of watts, with a peak rating of up to 2,700 watts. These absurdly high power figures make air cooling virtually impossible to use in the constraints of a standard rack mount form factor. It also requires data centers to revamp their server farms to accommodate the infrastructure needed to support liquid-cooled servers. However, to remain at the bleeding edge of the AI GPU arms race, Nvidia is prioritizing performance no matter the cost, which is why the company has opted to make GPUs that require thousands of watts of power at the expense of air-cooling. These clams possess unique structures in their shells that act similarly to fibre optics, guiding sunlight to symbiotic algae living within them. This allows the clams to provide their algae with the necessary light for photosynthesis while simultaneously protecting them from harmful ultraviolet rays. The algae, in turn, offer the clams essential nutrients such as sugars. Sunlight Channeling Through Shells Heart cockles are small bivalves measuring around the size of a walnut. Their shells are covered with tiny transparent areas, which have been found to function like fibre-optic cables. This ability is attributed to the structure of aragonite, a crystalline form of calcium carbonate present in their shells. Through microscopic examinations, it was revealed that the aragonite crystals form tubes that allow light to pass through with precision while blocking damaging UV radiation. Dakota McCoy, an evolutionary biophysicist from the University of Chicago, and her team demonstrated that the shells allow more than twice as much photosynthetically beneficial light to enter than UV light in a study published in the Nature Communications journal. This process potentially helps prevent coral bleaching and similar phenomena in clams, which can be exacerbated by climate change. Unique Design Offers Technological Insights The fibre-optic-like structures found in heart cockles are not only intriguing in a biological context but also present possible applications in technology.
