Norway’s Princess Ingrid Alexandra moves to Sydney for university Norway’s Princess Ingrid Alexandra moves to Sydney for university Norway’s Princess Ingrid Alexandra is moving to Australia for her university studies, enrolling in a degree programme at the University of Sydney. Alexandra, who is second in line to Norway’s throne, will join her classmates from August and will study “international relations and political economy,” Norway’s royal household said. The 21-year-old will study full-time and live in a student residence on campus, a university spokesperson said. Norway’s King Harald is Alexandra’s grandfather and her father is Crown Prince Haakon. “Her Royal Highness looks forward to dedicating herself to her studies in the years to come,” Norway’s royal household said in a statement. The princess’s mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, spent a year during her senior school studies at Wangaratta High School in Victoria. The University of Sydney is looking forward to welcoming the princess, said its vice-president, Kirsten Andrews. “We know how valuable the campus experience is and we hope the Princess makes the most of our beautiful grounds and surrounds, clubs and societies, as well as our proximity to the best Sydney has to offer,” Ms Andrews said in a statement. Born and raised in Oslo, the princess recently completed her military service, spending 15 months as an engineer soldier and rifleman. 4. This NC grocery store just announced 2 new locations in the Triangle This NC grocery store just announced 2 new locations in the Triangle A North Carolina-based grocer will open two new locations in the Triangle. Lowes Foods, which is headquartered in Winston-Salem, is expanding to Wendell and Fuquay-Varina. This follows the closures of multiple Lowes Foods stores as part of the grocer’s parent company’s “broader growth strategy to invest in new stores and remodel existing stores.” New Lowes Foods store locations While the grocer has not announced anticipated opening dates for the new stores, it provided their locations. Wendell: The new store will be in the Wendell Commons development at the intersection of Wendell Falls Parkway and Eagle Rock Road. Barnett Properties is the developer behind the project, which will include 90,000 square feet when complete, Alan Maness, a vice president of development, told The News & Observer in an email. The Lowes Foods is expected to open in 2026, though the schedule has not been finalized, Maness said. Fuquay-Varina: The store will be in the mixed-use Academy Village development at Old Honeycutt Road and Purfoy Road. Shelly Johnson, the director of marketing for Academy Village developer MPV Properties, told The News & Observer in an email that the Lowes Foods building is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027, pointing to a late 2027 store opening. Academy Village will feature 85,000 square feet of commercial space, 300 apartment units and 54 townhomes, with Proffitt Dixon overseeing the residential component. Nearby grocers include Harris Teeter and Aldi. Lowes Foods will open new stores in Wendell and Fuquay-Varina. Lowes Foods has more than a dozen stores in the Triangle, across Raleigh, Garner, Cary, Knightdale, Holly Springs, Apex, Clayton, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. The Holly Springs store at 112 Bass Lake Road is being remodeled and will reopen Thursday, June 26. “Our remodeling efforts are focused on enriching the everyday shopping experience,” Tim Lowe, the president of Lowes Foods, said in a news release. “We want guests to feel at home in our stores and to discover something new each time they visit. Whether it’s through new store openings or reimagined spaces, we are committed to offering an engaging grocery destination that reflects the spirit of each community.” The grocer also announced that the Kj’s Market in John’s Island, South Carolina, will be converted into a Lowes Foods. A popular grocery store based in North Carolina is expanding in the Triangle. Lowes Foods closes stores in Raleigh The grocer has closed multiple North Carolina locations over the past year. Its store at 8201 Rowlock Way in northwest Raleigh shut down last year, along with a Lowes Foods location in Wilmington and a Kj’s Market in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Earlier this year, Lowes Foods closed its Cary store at 930 High House Road. The location at 6430 Tryon Road in Cary remains open. 7. A Video of President Emmanuel Macron’s Wife Shoving Him Resurfaces Dark Details About Their Marriage A Video of President Emmanuel Macron’s Wife Shoving Him Resurfaces Dark Details About Their Marriage French President Emmanuel Macron was quick to shut down any speculation about a viral video that appeared to show his wife, Brigitte Macron, shoving his face, but that hasn’t stopped social media users from pointing out controversial details about their relationship. On May 26, cameras caught the French president taking a shove to the face right as the door of a plane carrying the couple opened at the beginning of an official trip to Hanoi, Vietnam. Macron, after being briefly stunned, quickly turned to the cameras to wave while the arm responsible for the shove was soon revealed to be that of his wife. More from SheKnows “I was bickering, or rather joking, with my wife,” Macron later told reporters, via The New York Times. “It’s nothing. I’m surprised by it, it turns into some kind of global catastrophe where people are even coming up with theories to explain it… It’s nonsense.” The theories Macron references may or may not include social media users, and even Time, connecting the incident back to the problematic beginnings of the couple’s relationship. Macron met Brigitte Trogneux, who is 24 years his senior, as a 15-year-old student at the private school where she worked as a teacher. Brigitte, then a married mother of three, including a daughter who was a classmate of her future husband, oversaw a theatre workshop at the school and reportedly grew close to Macron while working on a play together. In the 2017 biography, Emmanuel Macron: A Perfect Young Man, the President’s parents recalled removing their son from the school once they learned about the relationship. “When Emmanuel met Brigitte, we certainly did not say, ‘How wonderful!’” Macron’s father said. Though the age of consent in France is 15, Macron’s horrified parents still tried to urge Brigitte not to see their son until he was an adult but she allegedly told them she couldn’t “promise anything.” The pair eventually married in 2007 when he was 29 and she was 54 years old. 9. Chelsea: Enzo Maresca faces old friend and foe in Uefa Conference League final Chelsea: Enzo Maresca faces old friend and foe in Uefa Conference League final “If I know how he thinks, he probably also knows how I think,” said Maresca of the opposition boss. “So I don’t think it gives us an advantage in this final.” This game is very much master versus apprentice. In an interview while managing Manchester City’s Under-21s in 2020, Maresca said: “Manuel was both the coach and the person who convinced me to try be a coach myself when I finished playing.” Maresca revealed the Chilean planted the seed when he was playing in midfield for Malaga that he could be a good coach one day. It was in a season where Pellgrini guided Malaga from the relegation zone to fourth in La Liga to qualify for the Champions League, in a team which featured his current assistant ****** Caballero in goal. To this day, Maresca is in touch with Pellegrini on a regular basis. The Italian sent a “short message” to his mentor saying, “see you in the final” before the league phase started and they have been in touch multiple times this season, finally crossing paths again in Wroclaw as both teams conducted open training sessions. When asked what one lesson he learned from Pellegrini, Maresca said: “I’ve learned many things from Manuel. But if I choose one, he taught me to treat my players as my sons. I have four sons, but I have 25 others in the dressing room. “It is one of many things I have learned from him. We both know each other pretty well.” When asked if children must obey their father, Pellegrini added: “When children grow up, parents no longer have any authority. He learned from many people, he was also with Pep Guardiola. He will have and is already having a great career. “It reflects his ability and the intention to study and learn that he always has.” Mentions of Guardiola show just how well Pellegrini knows Maresca. Having also worked under Carlo Ancelotti and Marcello Lippi as a player at Juventus, he will know that one of Maresca’s biggest inspirations was facing Guardiola’s Barcelona team in 2008 while at Sevilla. Ever since that day, the box-to-box midfielder knew what kind of coach he wanted to be. That’s why he joined Guardiola’s coaching staff in 2020. Maresca says that educated him greatly. He managed the Under-23 side, briefly leaving for an ill-fated spell at Parma, before returning to become Guardiola’s assistant. He was influential in adding a tactical evolution, pushing for central defenders like John Stones, to play an inverted full-back role, stepping into midfield, rather than make overlapping runs, to help outnumber teams in the middle of the pitch. That partnership of Guardiola and Maresca helped City to win a historic treble in 2023, before he joined Leicester to help lead them to the Championship title the following season. 10. Child raises alarm before married couple found dead Child raises alarm before married couple found dead A nine-year-old girl has raised the alarm before a married couple were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a home, police say. The child alerted a family member who called police, with officers later discovering the “traumatising” scene in far north Queensland. “I have not previously been exposed to anything like this before,” Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell told reporters in Cairns on Wednesday. Police responded to a ******** check and arrived at the Mount Sheridan home in Cairns about 7.15pm on Tuesday. They found a husband and wife – both aged 41 – dead in different rooms inside the home with gunshot wounds. “We do not believe she was present or witnessed any of the incident that occurred,” Det Bell said of the girl. “However that still doesn’t take away from how traumatising that will be for that child and the family members and friends moving forward.” The child had been “alerted to the incident occurring” before reaching out to family members and neighbours, police said. “That triple zero call occurred as a result of another family member calling us,” Det Bell said. The married couple did not have a domestic violence or mental health history and were not known to police, she said. “It’s always possible that things go on behind closed doors that family, friends and police are not aware of,” Det Bell said. “But our investigations have indicated to date that there is no indication that there was any domestic violence within that relationship.” Multiple firearms were located in the home, all registered to the husband. The child is currently in the care of family members who are being given ongoing support. “This is not only a tragic occurrence for friends and family it also significantly impacts on the whole of the community,” Det Bell said. “If you are suffering or know anyone who is suffering please call Lifeline.” Police have launched an investigation into why the “tragic” incident occurred and to provide answers to family members. A report will be prepared for the coroner. Anyone with information has been urged to contact police. 14. How Antony became a Real Betis ‘hero’ after Manchester United sadness How Antony became a Real Betis ‘hero’ after Manchester United sadness Then United manager Ten Hag said in January last year that Antony’s form had been impacted by off-field issues. The Brazilian was the subject of a police investigation after allegations of domestic abuse were made against him by three women. He denied the allegations, spoke to Greater Manchester Police voluntarily and was not arrested or charged in either Brazil or the ***. Antony said his unhappiness affected his family life, describing the ******* as “very hard days for me”. He added: “I was at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room. “It was very complicated, but thank God, with the help of my family and mainly with the help of God, I managed to get ahead and today I am very happy here.” However, Balague does not expect Betis to be able to keep Antony because of the transfer fee United would demand. “Manchester United won’t sell for less than 50m euros and Betis will be in Europe, but I think Antony belongs at Champions League level,” Balague told BBC Sport. “They are going into the final with the idea of having nothing to lose. They’re in their first final, have a lot of quality, compete really well, battle for everything, follow the ideas of [coach Manuel] Pellegrini and their best players are reaching their best level. “They are a formidable team, but Chelsea are favourites. Betis should enjoy the last minutes with Antony because he probably won’t stay.” Source link #Antony #Real #Betis #hero #Manchester #United #sadness Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  15. What Essendon forward learned from shock axing What Essendon forward learned from shock axing Towering Essendon forward Peter Wright believes he has bounced back from a shock axing last year with better “clarity” in his game. After booting 52 goals in 2022 to claim the Bombers’ Crichton Medal, Wright endured a tough 2024 that included being dropped late in the season. The 28-year-old missed four games through suspension for a bump gone wrong on Sydney defender Harry Cunningham in round two. After returning, Wright only had brief moments close to his best and described the campaign as “challenging”. “Not too many people who play footy ever have it all their own way,” he told AAP. “I wasn’t playing my best footy last year; a little bit inconsistent and probably a little bit indecisive out there. “So I feel like I got some much better clarity.” An ankle issue delayed his start to 2025, but Wright bounced back immediately on return with a superb six-goal haul in a tight win against West Coast in round six. Teenage defender Zak Johnson has already been confirmed to be Essendon’s seventh debutant of the season, selected to play against reigning premiers the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Thursday night. “We clearly want to have, like every team, the next man up mentality,” Wright said. “We’re going to have to rely on our depth as a playing list, but the flip side has been the positives in being able to play (seven) debutants this year. “Who knows, we might build on that in coming weeks.” Source link #Essendon #learned #shock #axing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  16. Shuttered Tempe golf course causes problems for neighbors Shuttered Tempe golf course causes problems for neighbors The Brief Residents say after Tempe’s Shalimar Golf Course closed in April, the water stopped, and a pond dried up. Wildlife began to die from the lack of water, causing the course to smell and leaving nearby residents upset. The new owner of the course reportedly wants to rezone the land and build hundreds of homes. TEMPE, Ariz. – Tempe’s Shalimar Golf Course closed for good in April and the owners are working to sell to a developer and build more than 200 homes. But, FOX 10’s Steve Nielsen learned while that plan is being reviewed, residents say a smelly new problem has developed. When the water stopped, the problems began. What they’re saying Follow Kathleen Ross through her backyard gate and you see what’s been troubling her. “It’s dying,” Kathleen said about the course and its wildlife. For years, residents have been fighting to keep the 9-hole golf course afloat. “The pond is completely dried up,” Allan Ross said. A resident captured a video of the fish dying in the drying pond days ago. On May 27, a FOX 10 drone couldn’t find any water left. Kathleen says the smell of the dead fish has been awful. “Sit outside and enjoy the evening weather or our patio or the pool because of the grossness. It’s nauseating. We have to go inside,” she said. What we know FOX 10 didn’t hear back from the long-time owners, but they wrote an opinion piece earlier this year saying they saved this course many times over the years, but it’s time for a new partner. A developer is asking to rezone the land to build 244 homes over two to three years. It would bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue yearly. “It’s going to destroy the neighborhood,” Trudy Mussigman said. She says they prefer for golfers to tee off again, but if it’s development, they want acre lots as neighbors. “I get it you’re trying to get the most money out of your investment, but you also have to think about the 106 homes that are surrounding your land,” Mussigman said. Kathleen says she wants the water turned back on. “Brown. Smelly. Sad. Abandoned,” Kathleen said, describing her backyard view. There’s a community meeting on June 4 and 11 at 6 p.m. at the Church of the Epiphany in Tempe. All are welcome. 20. UFC: Paddy Pimblett targeting Ilia Topuria or Justin Gaethje fight in Abu Dhabi UFC: Paddy Pimblett targeting Ilia Topuria or Justin Gaethje fight in Abu Dhabi Paddy Pimblett says he would love to fight Ilia Topuria in Abu Dhabi in October but his opponent is most likely to be Justin Gaethje. Liverpool’s Pimblett earned a statement win over Michael Chandler last month before calling for his next bout to be against an opponent ranked in the top five. Spain’s Topuria faces Brazil’s Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt at UFC 317 on 28 June after former champion Islam Makhachev vacated his belt to move up to welterweight. American Gaethje doesn’t have a fight booked and is third in the UFC’s lightweight rankings – five places above Pimblett. The UFC usually hosts a numbered event in Abu Dhabi in October but a potential date for this year’s show is yet to be set. “I’m hoping to fight in Abu Dhabi in October. I think that’s when I’m going to be back in the cage,” Pimblett told BBC Sport. “I was thinking Ilia might call me out if he wins [against Oliveira]. I’d love to beat him if he gets the belt. “I’d love to fight him anyway but he’s booked, so I think it’s more than likely Justin Gaethje.” Pimblett has history with former featherweight champion Topuria after the pair clashed at a hotel before UFC London in 2022. Topuria, 28, vacated his belt earlier this year to move up to lightweight, opening the door to a potential fight with Pimblett. Gaethje, meanwhile, last fought in March with a win over Rafael Fiziev – and with 20 knockouts from 26 bouts, he remains one of the most popular fighters on the roster. With fourth-ranked Max Holloway facing fifth-ranked Dustin Poirier on 19 July, the only other fighter without a fight booked in the top five is Armenia’s Arman Tsarukyan, who Pimblett has no interest in. “No one [cares] about Arman Tsarukyan and people actually want to watch Gaethje fight. People know it’ll be an exciting fight, me versus Gaethje,” said Pimblett. “Tsarukyan, he’s just an absolute tool, and then it’s me and Gaethje. “One win away and I’ll be fighting for the belt. Yeah, that’s always been the aim. It’s the only aim that we have.” Source link #UFC #Paddy #Pimblett #targeting #Ilia #Topuria #Justin #Gaethje #fight #Abu #Dhabi Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  21. Trump’s attacks on academia offers chance for Australia Trump’s attacks on academia offers chance for Australia Donald Trump’s offensive on top US universities could create a golden opportunity for Australia to become a world leader. The US president has stripped billions in grant money from Harvard University, claiming it is a hotbed of anti-Semitism after the school pushed back on his administration’s demands for changes to its leadership, governance and admissions policies. Millions more has been slashed from other institutions and Australia – as the US’s largest research partner – has found itself in the crossfire, with up to $386 million at risk according to *********** Academy of Science estimates. But it could also present a chance for Australia, says UNSW professor Richard Holden and *********** National University former vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt. “What’s happening to us – research and researchers – is shocking,” Professor Holden told the National Press Club on Wednesday. “But this act of American self-harm is our opportunity and it’s an opportunity that has never arisen before and may never arise again. “With the US stepping back from its leadership role, Australia has a chance to step up.” As US researchers look to move their labs, families and lives abroad, Australia could become an attractive destination. Prof Holden acknowledged bringing researchers Down Under would be an expensive endeavour, particularly as many universities take a scalpel to their bottom line, but he maintained it was a “once-in-a-generation moment” that should be seized. Otherwise, Australia’s steadily decreasing investment in research and development could have “enormous” consequences for the future, Professor Schmidt warned. “I look around and I’m actually scared,” he told the press club. Australia’s government investment in sovereign research capability was a third higher 15 years ago relative to GDP. As a result of steady, bipartisan disinvestment, institutions have become “addicted” to funding research through international student income even as the federal government tries to cut their numbers. Prof Schmidt also pointed to China as a warning of what could happen if Australia did not boost research spending. While Australia’s research and development spending has steadily declined, Beijing’s has surged, increasing by 8.3 per cent in 2024 alone. The benefits of this research were yet to occur, Prof Schmidt said, but it remained the “smart thing to do”. “I want you to think about what their increase and our decrease means for Australia’s future and economic and security environment,” he said. “We’re going to either be left behind or we’re going to pedal hard and go along side-by-side with them. “It’s our choice, our destiny.” Source link #Trumps #attacks #academia #offers #chance #Australia Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. London mayor backs report calling for cannabis decriminalisation London mayor backs report calling for cannabis decriminalisation PA Media Sir Sadiq Khan, who visited a legal cannabis farm during a trip to Los Angeles in 2022, said the ***’s rules “cannot be justified” The possession of small quantities of cannabis for personal use should be decriminalised, a report backed by the London mayor has concluded. The report by the London Drugs Commission, chaired by former Labour cabinet minister Lord Falconer, makes 42 recommendations, including removing natural cannabis from the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA). Sir Sadiq Khan said current rules “cannot be justified”, adding that the commission’s findings had provided “a compelling, evidence-based case” for decriminalisation. David Raynes, of the National Prevention of Drugs Alliance (NPDA), said any reduction in the legal consequences around cannabis would wrongly send the message that “cannabis was less harmful”. Lord Falconer said that while “legalisation is not the answer”, the criminal justice system should “focus only on the dealers and not the users”. The report makes recommendations in areas covering education, healthcare and the policing of cannabis. Among the recommendations, it says natural cannabis should be removed from the MDA, where it is considered Class B alongside drugs like ketamine, and instead maintain it as a controlled substance under the Psychoactive Substances Act (PSA). The report states: “The possibility of a custodial prison sentence of any length, but certainly up to the current maximum of five years, for possession of cannabis for personal use feels excessive.” While acknowledging that it is very rare for anyone to be sentenced anywhere close to the five years, the authors said the “consequences of serving any time in prison are significant”. The report states that police officers often identify cannabis possession through the use of stop and search which “continues to be utilised in a racially disproportionate way”. Its authors call for the suspicion of cannabis possession to be removed as a reason officers can initiate a search. The authors argue even when a person is found with an amount deemed beyond personal use, the current legal consequences “feel extreme, relative to the dangers of cannabis itself”. Lord Falconer chaired the London Drugs Commission report into cannabis laws Regulating cannabis under the PSA, the authors argue, would expose fewer people to stop and search, help tackle “racial disproportionality”, and make any legal consequences “commensurate with the risks posed”. They add decriminalising it would reduce the impact on those who take cannabis for medicinal purposes but are not able to get a legal prescription. Janet Hills, the commission’s deputy chair who was a former detective sergeant and chair of the Met’s ****** Police Association, said it was time to “shift in our approach to cannabis enforcement”. She said the recommendations would “create a more equitable and just system”. Among the other recommendations made in the report are to: Improve public health services for cannabis-related harm, including better treatment access and coordinationEnhance cannabis education with earlier, age-appropriate, and credible content in schools and beyondSupport fair access to medical cannabis, including addressing cost barriers and expanding researchMonitor international developments and reassess the case for broader legalisation in five years Lord Falconer said: “Those who suffer from the adverse effects of cannabis – which may be a small percentage of users but it is a high number of people – need reliable, consistent medical and other support. And there needs to be much more education on the risks of cannabis use.” Mr Raynes, who has long been against any liberalisation in Britain’s drug policy, said that the report’s authors were attempting to “modify the law as gently as possible”. “The real danger is that we send a signal to the youth of London that cannabis is less harmful,” he said. ‘Long overdue’ Asked about the point made in the report that cannabis is still widely used despite the current legal consequences, Mr Raynes said it was about “restricting the damage” done by ******** substances. He added that the London Drugs Commission, which Sir Sadiq established in 2022, was “an enormous piece of self-indulgence by the mayor” in a policy area in which he has no authority over. Responding to the report, the mayor said: “I’ve long been clear that we need fresh thinking on how to reduce the substantial harms associated with drug-related crime in our communities.” He added: “We must recognise that better education, improved healthcare and more effective, equitable policing of cannabis use are long overdue.” The Home Office has been asked to comment on the report. In March, Dame Diana Johnson, a minister at the department, said the government had “no plans” to legalise cannabis but did not address decriminalisation. In a 2023 interview as opposition leader, Sir Keir Starmer said drug policy was “settled” in the ***. For the Warriors, David Roche (four) and Justin Morisey (two) kicked all six of their goals while Callum Hardie, Dion Anthony, Fraser Wittwer, Ben Hankinson and Ryan Melvin were standout contributors.
