Twins Krish and Keira Arora, from Hounslow, London, became members of the highly exclusive society just six months apart. Krish took the IQ test in November at the age of 10, after he was inspired by his role model Young Sheldon – the main character in the Big Bang prequel series. He scored a mind-boggling 162 – a result which makes him smarter than Albert Einstein, who is believed to have had an IQ of 160. Meanwhile, Keira decided she wanted to give the Mensa admission a go after seeing that her brother had been accepted. She became a member this May at the age of 11, thanks to her impressive score of 152. Only people with IQs in the top two per cent of the global population qualify for Mensa. 3. Four successful strategies for public sector technology recruitment Four successful strategies for public sector technology recruitment It has long been recognised that central and local government departments, as well as the public sector more widely, face a challenge in recruiting the technology talent they urgently need to transform services. There are perennial skills shortages in key areas such as software engineering, data and cyber. This acts as a brake on the ambitious modernisation and digitisation plans for the ***’s public services – as well as raising concerns in key areas such as cybersecurity, as the National Audit Office (NAO) recently warned. The key factor behind this issue is undoubtedly pay, given that base rates of remuneration can be anything from a few percentage points to as much as 40% lower in public sector organisations compared to their private sector counterparts. This clearly creates a recruitment (and retention) challenge. Hampered by misconceptions But it is not just about pay. There is a wider perception – what I would describe as a misconception – that the work on offer in government and the public sector is not as exciting, advanced or cutting-edge as that going on in private industry. This belief tends to drive many tech professionals to confine their searches to the private sector, particularly those looking to cut their teeth in key emerging areas such as AI, machine learning and Big Data. However, while these factors certainly make recruitment harder, there is no doubt at all that the public sector can attract the talent it needs. In my experience, there are four key areas where public bodies can focus their efforts to shift attitudes and bring out all the benefits and strengths of joining a public sector technology team. 1 Communicating a rounded view of pay Firstly, remuneration. While it is true that permanent and contractor rates are generally higher in the private sector, often the differential is not huge. Many positions come with very attractive and competitive salaries or rates – there are plenty of ‘big earners’ in public sector tech teams. There are also a number of initiatives to pay supplements and premiums to pivotal roles such as data scientists and software developers that are key to transformation efforts. Moreover, a standout strength in the public sector is pension contributions. It’s true that final salary pension schemes are now largely closed to new joiners, but even in the switch to defined contribution schemes the public sector is significantly more generous than the private sector. It is not uncommon for a public sector employer to make contributions approaching 30% of an employee’s salary – far in excess of standard practice amongst commercial businesses where the figure is usually below 10%. This makes a huge difference to the size of the pension pot an individual can build up. It’s a long-term gain rather than being immediately visible in a pay packet – but if this benefit is properly explained and publicised, it can significantly influence some individuals’ thinking. 2 Emphasising the quality and scale of work on offer Secondly, the quality of work on offer. It is completely wrong to take the view “private sector = cutting edge, public sector = behind the curve”. There are numerous projects in play across the public sector that are right at the leading edge. AI pilots and implementations, cloud-first adoptions, agile and lean methodologies – they are all happening. For example, have you applied for or renewed your passport recently? The Passport Office’s process is fully digitised end-to-end, creating a slick, customer-centric experience that rivals anything on offer from a private business. The Home Office, Cabinet Office, FCDO, devolved bodies including the Scottish government – they are all pursuing ambitious digital transformation programmes that require teams of highly skilled technologists. What’s more, these are projects at scale – to be delivered to hundreds of thousands or millions of users. Internal projects are big too, given that many departments have 10,000+ staff. Maybe it’s time for some technologists working on niche private projects in the mid-market to reconsider? It’s really important for public sector bodies to keep finding ways of talking about the exciting work they are doing, for example by attending cross-sector events and industry conferences, getting the message out there to attract talent. 3 Promoting cultural strengths and sense of purpose Thirdly, there are strong cultural perks to the public sector. Flexible and hybrid working is widely embraced – while in the private sphere, growing numbers of employers have been increasing their in-office mandates. There is a balance to be struck here clearly, but in most public employers there is still ample scope for individuals find an equation that works for them and the organisation. This can be especially attractive to female technologists, work returners, carers and second careerists. There is also a major cultural factor around purpose. For many, knowing that the work they are doing will have a positive impact on the services available to the population at large – for the public good, rather than for commercial profit – can act as a significant motivator. It’s something that public sector bodies can continue to leverage. 4 Optimising the recruitment process Finally, another important determinant is the smoothness of the recruitment and onboarding process. In my experience, this is an area where some public bodies have scope to drive improvements. At Harvey Nash, we always discuss this with clients upfront because it can make such a difference to outcomes. Ensuring that the application process is as smooth and digitised as possible, creating a good candidate experience from start to finish, is key. Relatively small tweaks and refinements to the process flow can have surprisingly big results. It is also essential to create alternative entry pathways to reach new talent pools, including apprenticeship schemes and other programmes. Technology roles in the public sector have a huge amount to offer. Technologists can build a great career that will also be transferable into the private sector later on if they wish. We have placed numerous candidates who have later told us how delighted they are about the move and that they just didn’t realise how much cutting edge and well-remunerated work was on offer. Public bodies need to keep on getting the message out there, fighting misconceptions and balancing up the debate. 5. Where alligators are found in North Texas, and what to do if you see one Where alligators are found in North Texas, and what to do if you see one What lives in North Texas, has 80 sharp chompers and can hold its breath for almost 45 minutes? It’s not a fish or a turtle. It’s the American alligator. These large reptiles are not as scary as they sound. In fact, the American alligator is the least aggressive of all the crocodilian species, according to Texas A&M Agrilife. They are most populated in East and South Texas. So, while sightings in North Texas are rare, they are still present. Now that summer is here, keep your eye out. The American alligator is really only spotted in late spring through fall while the weather is warm — they go dormant when temperatures are 60 degrees or colder. Though alligator attacks are extremely rare, we do share marshes and swamps with the mega-lizards. Here’s what you should know about American alligators in North Texas, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. An alligator swims in Lake Worth Wednesday, June 30, 2021, in Fort Worth. What’s the difference between alligators and crocodiles? There are many differences between alligators and crocodiles. The most defining factor here in Texas is that crocodiles do not live in Texas, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. Alligators are grayish-****** in color. Female alligators grow to about nine feet long, while males can get up to 14 feet. They only mate once a year during the spring breeding season, and then the females lay their eggs in late June and July. It only takes two months for the eggs to hatch. Alligators only eat one to two times a week. There are no molars within their 80 teeth, so gators ******** most of their food whole. Their most active feeding hours are during dusk and dawn. Per Texas A&M, alligators use their keen sense of smell, sight and hearing to stalk their prey. They are exceptionally sneaky. TPWD says there has never been a fatality from an alligator in Texas. In fact, “alligators don’t normally eat people. Since they have been isolated from humans for all but about five or six thousand years, they don’t really understand we’re on the menu, unless we teach them,” TPWD said. Map showing alligator habitats in Texas. Where do alligators live? According to TPWD, alligators in Texas live pretty much anywhere there is water. In North Texas, they are most commonly found in freshwater lakes and rivers. In D-FW, alligators have been spotted in the Trinity River watershed region. Specific sightings also include Lake Worth and Eagle Mountain Lake, according to the City of Fort Worth. During the summer of 2024, the City of Coppell issued an alligator warning due to sightings along Denton Creek. More trending stories from our newsroom: →Why ‘Last Rodeo’ star loves Fort Worth →Price Check: Cheapest produce in Fort Worth for May →These are the most unsafe hospitals in North Texas What to do if you run into an alligator If you run into an alligator, TPWD recommends the following: Refrain from calling TPWD if the alligator is not approaching humans or posing an obvious threat. Simply seeing an alligator does not mean it is a nuisance. If you hear an alligator hissing, that means you are too close. “Never make the mistake of thinking that an alligator is slow and lethargic. Alligators are extremely quick and agile and will defend themselves when cornered,” according to TPWD. However, if you see one, back away slowly because it is rare for gators to chase humans. Alligators along the water, basking in the sun, are just trying to regulate their body temperature. Do not alarm them, otherwise they will retreat into water. TPWD considers alligators a nuisance if they are near homes, livestock pens or other urban structures. (This is when you should call TPWD.) If an alligator comes out of the water towards people, this alligator should be reported because it is also considered a nuisance. Alligators will consider pets a food source. Keep your animals leashed up or in fenced yards. If an alligator is on a road, notify TPWD. Never swim in a pond where you may see a gator, especially during night. Though gators can be hard to spot in water, you can sometimes see their eyes pop above the surface. Alligators may pursue fishing lures because they see it as a natural food source. However, if an alligator is following a boat or watercraft can be considered a nuisance. Never feed alligators. If caught doing so, you can face up to a $500 fine and be charged with a Class C misdemeanor. To report an alligator, you can call TPWD at 1-800-792-1112 or a Tarrant County game warden. An alligator suns on the boardwalk in the Fort Worth Nature Center wildlife preserve on Lake Worth. Can you hunt alligators? Though alligators are a protected species by TPWD, they are also allowed to be hunted if the hunter has a valid hunting license and lawful means. Depending on the county you live in (core or non-core), there are different regulations. Tarrant County is considered a non-core county. Hunting season is April 1 though June 30. In non-core counties, hunters are allowed one alligator per season. Those who hunt an alligator in the wild, outside of Texas law, can be faced with a misdemeanor and fine. According to TPWD, violating Texas Fish and Wildlife law consequences can result in any of the following: Be fined for state jail felonies ($1,500-$10,000 and/or up to 2 years in jail). Face automatic suspension or revocation of licenses for up to five years. Forfeit hunting gear, including firearms, used to commit a violation. 7. Tesla Stock Jumps 7% Despite Sales Slump in Europe Tesla Stock Jumps 7% Despite Sales Slump in Europe Tesla (NASDAQ:) stock was soaring on Tuesday, rising about 7% on a day when the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association reported significantly slower sales for Tesla in Europe last month. That bad news was offset by good news about Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk. Musk, on his X social media site, said over the weekend that he will be spending more time running his companies and less time at his government job in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms. I must be super focused on X/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week), as we have critical technologies rolling out,” Musk wrote in a post on X last Saturday. This follows a statement on Tesla’s earnings call last month when Musk said his time spent working for DOGE will drop significantly in May. “Starting next month, I’ll be allocating probably more of my time to Tesla and now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done,” Musk said on the call. Also, last week at the Qatar Economic Forum, Musk said he will be doing a “lot less” political spending in future elections. “If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it,” Musk said, reported the Associated Press. “I do not currently see a reason.” This renewed focus on Tesla certainly pleased investors and Wall Street analysts, many of whom have been calling for him to curtail his political involvement and fully commit to Tesla. Sales Drop Significantly in April What may have also lifted Tesla stock on Tuesday was an overall positive day for stocks as the rose 720 points, the jumped 117 points, or 2%, while the surged 450 points, or 2.4%. The catalyst was likely reinvigorated trade talks with the U.S. which had stalled. Last week, President Donald Trump said discussions with the EU were “going nowhere” and he recommended a 50% tariff on EU imports starting June 1. Over the weekend, representatives from the EU and US spoke on tariffs and, according to a post on X by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU was “ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.” As a result of the renewed trade talks, the EU tariffs were delayed until July 9. This offset bad news on the sales front for Tesla. According to a May 27 release by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, Tesla sales in Europe dropped 53% year-over-year in April to just 5,475 units, based on new car registrations. It was the steepest drop of any automaker in Europe except for Jaguar. Tesla’s share of sales in Europe fell from 1.3% in April 2024 to 0.6% in April 2025. For January through April 2025, Tesla sales have fallen 46% year-over-year to 41,677 based on new car registrations, with its share falling from 2.1% to 1.1%. Tesla stock has recovered in the past month, gaining 27%, but it is still down 10% YTD. Its P/E ratio is still extremely high at 193. Wheatbelt farmers had their hopes dashed at the weekend when rainfall failed to hit double digits Wheatbelt farmers had their hopes dashed at the weekend when rainfall failed to hit double digits Wheatbelt farmers had their hopes dashed at the weekend when rainfall failed to hit double digits, while parts of the South West and south coast have had their prayers answered. Denmark recorded 43.6mm between May 23 and May 25, while Manjimup received 39.6mm. The cloud band travelled south-east at the weekend, with Perth metropolitan receiving the bulk of the downpour with 48.6mm, flowing through to Esperance who received 18.4mm. The Wheatbelt missed out on the wet weather, with a maximum of 8mm falling in Corrigin. Williams sheep and grain farmer Andrew Rintoul said while he did receive a couple of millimetres more than anticipated at the weekend, it was not enough. Despite this, he said he remains optimistic. “We got a total of 5.5mm at the weekend . . . hopefully the rainfall will be better this weekend,” he said. “If you’re not optimistic it makes the game hard. “The sheep are in good condition, lambs are dropping, things are happening, so we’re feeling positive but we are going to need rain to get things going, fill dams.” Manjimup-based Mark Muir, of Mordallup Angus stud, received 15mm in the rain gauge from the recent three-day system. “We had 34mm in March and 76mm in April, so were sitting pretty good, but paddock grass to feed our 1000 head Angus herd is still a bit short,” he said. “Not complaining though as other parts of the State’s agricultural regions are in desperate need of a good general rain drenching, I guess our area has been on the right side of the rain cloud.” Mr Muir said another weather system was approaching Manjimup for the weekend. “If we could get 30mm, we could loosen out dependence on extra feed-out hay costs.” Looking forward, the Bureau of Meteorology’s rainfall outlook is forecasting rainfall in the month of June to be below average for parts of the South West, with warmer than average days and nights expected. The central Wheatbelt is expecting a high chance of showers over the weekend and double digits on Monday June 2. Other areas of the State expect a dose of rainfall come early June also, with the South West set to receive another heavy dose, and Great Southern and Mid West expected to see double digits this weekend. 13. China being provocative, ignoring olive branches, top Taiwan policymaker says China being provocative, ignoring olive branches, top Taiwan policymaker says By Ben Blanchard and Yimou Lee TAIPEI (Reuters) -China is being provocative with an “extreme pressure” campaign against Taiwan and is intentionally ignoring the island’s olive branches and goodwill, its top China policy maker told Reuters, as Beijing ratchets up its tactics against Taipei. China, which views Taiwan as its own territory despite the rejection of that position by the democratic and separately governed island, has stepped up military and political pressure on it, calling President Lai Ching-te a dangerous “separatist”. Since Lai took office in May last year, China has held at least three rounds of major war games around Taiwan, while also threatening the death penalty for “diehard” supporters of its independence, and setting up hotlines to report such activity. Mainland Affairs Council minister Chiu Chui-cheng said Beijing should own up to its responsibility for stoking tension by exerting “extreme pressure” which includes almost daily military incursions near Taiwan and public influence campaigns. “It’s true that we don’t see any sincerity from mainland China,” Chiu said this week, speaking in his office in central Taipei. He repeated the government’s offer for talks with China based on equality and respect, but without Beijing’s political preconditions. “We have made a lot of effort and offered many olive branches,” Chiu added. “We are a democratic country and it is impossible for us to accept your political premise of eliminating the Republic of China, belittling Taiwan or treating Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China.” The defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong’s communists, and that remains the island’s formal name. No peace treaty has ever been signed, and neither government recognises the other. Asked on Wednesday about Taiwan saying it was showing goodwill towards China, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said it was an “objective fact” the island was part of China. “Scheming for Taiwan’s independence and secession means there is no way to talk about cross-Strait dialogue and consultations,” spokesperson Chen Binhua told reporters in Beijing. “It will only undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” CHINA A “HOSTILE FORCE” In March, Lai called China a “foreign hostile force”, saying it had deepened its influence campaigns and infiltration tactics against the island, while pledging measures to tackle Beijing’s efforts to “absorb” Taiwan. An angry China responded with a new round of war games. “We were just explaining the facts to everyone,” Chiu said of Lai’s description of China. “The serious threat level to Taiwan from mainland China, the Beijing authorities, can be described as extreme pressure pressing ever closer.” Chiu said China’s hotlines to report supposed separatist activity, which Beijing says generated 6,000 reports, had only served to sow fear amongst Taiwan’s sizeable business community in China, spurring some to leave. He compared such “indiscriminate reporting” to actions during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976 in China, referring to the decade of chaos and violence unleashed after Mao declared class war, turning neighbours and families against each other. “I myself have heard many of our Taiwanese business people say, ‘We have been in mainland China for 30 to 40 years, and we are willing to stay here even if the economy is bad, but living in an environment where we are on edge and worried about being reported day and night, that’s why I decided to leave.'” (Reporting by Yimou Lee and Ben Blanchard; Additional reporting by Beijing newsroom; Editing by Clarence Fernandez) Source link #China #provocative #ignoring #olive #branches #top #Taiwan #policymaker Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. Oppo Find N6 Launch Timeline Leaked; Could Be Equipped With a Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 SoC Oppo Find N6 Launch Timeline Leaked; Could Be Equipped With a Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 SoC Oppo Find N6 is reportedly under development and is expected to arrive in China early next year. A new leak has hinted at the possible launch timeline of the book-style foldable smartphone. The purported handset is tipped to be powered by the successor to Qualcomm’s current flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The tipster suggests that the phone will likely maintain its thin and lightweight design, similar to the preceding Oppo Find N5, which was unveiled in China in February. Oppo Find N6 Tipped to Be Under Development The Oppo Find N6 is said to be in the works, according to a post shared by the Weibo profile Mobile China (translated from ********). The leak suggests that the handset may launch in China in the first quarter of 2026, that is, between January and March of next year. As per the leak, the upcoming Oppo Find N series handset will continue to be positioned in the market as a thin and light book-style foldable smartphone. The current Oppo Find N5 measures 8.93mm in thickness when folded and 4.2mm when folded, while it weighs 229g. It is currently the slimmest book-style foldable smartphone on the market. Notably, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is tipped to be the thinnest book-style foldable smartphone when launched, said to measure only 3.9mm when unfolded. It is expected to be introduced in select global markets in July. The leak also claims that the Oppo Find N6 will likely be powered by a yet-announced Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The Find N5 comes with a Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. It has an 8.12-inch 2K main screen and a 6.62-inch 2K cover display. The phone carries a Hasselblad-backed 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto shooter. 16. Asus’ Arnold Su on New GeForce RTX 50 Series ROG Laptops, AI PCs and What’s Next for ROG Ally Asus’ Arnold Su on New GeForce RTX 50 Series ROG Laptops, AI PCs and What’s Next for ROG Ally Asus refreshed its ROG line of gaming laptops with Nvidia’s latest GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs in India this month ahead of Computex 2025. While the focus remains on gaming, the company’s high-end ROG Strix, Zephyrus and Flow range of laptops are also pushing AI performance on the back of Intel Core Ultra 9 and AMD Ryzen processors. Just like its previous launches, the Taiwanese manufacturer has put emphasis on being first to market with the newest hardware innovations. At Computex Taipei 2024, Asus was among the first to debut its line of AI-powered Copilot+ laptops running on Snapdragon X Elite chipsets. A year later, as AI PCs become more ubiquitous across segments and price points come down, the company has seen the demand for AI-ready laptops go up in India. The response has been encouraging for the company’s new ROG lineup of laptops, as well, with over 100 pre-orders registered in the first two weeks of May — the highest the company has seen in the past two to three years. New GeForce RTX 50 Series ROG Laptops “I think it’s a positive signal to Asus and to the gaming industry that end users are really eagerly waiting for the new graphics card and new chassis coming to the market,” Arnold Su, vice president of the company’s consumer and gaming PC business in India, told Gadgets 360 after the company refreshed its ROG lineup in the country earlier this month. Su spoke about the company’s latest launches, its strategy with gaming and AI in India, the response to ROG Ally handheld in the market and more in a wide-ranging chat. The graphics card market has seen a continuous growth in India, the Asus executive said, despite a slight dip in the overall consumer notebook shipments in 2023 and 2024. Su attributes this positive trajectory of “so-called gaming machines” to their versatility. It’s not just gamers who are buying gaming laptops. “Maybe 20-30 percent of people are using it for content creation or graphics card designing,” he said. With the new GeForce RTX 50 series ROG laptops, Asus first launched the higher-end models with GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070Ti on May 2 and saw over 100 pre-bookings with the average price per unit around Rs. 2.5 lakh. Last week, the company introduced ROG Strix, ROG Zephyrus and TUF gaming laptops with the entry level GeForce RTX 5060 laptop GPUs, which will be priced under Rs. 2 lakh. “We don’t want to wait for the entire 50 series to come and then we launch,” Su said. “We think since the premium model is already ready in India, so we don’t want our premium customers to wait.” The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025) is priced at Rs. 2,79,999 AI PCs With its ROG range, Asus is the market leader in the gaming PC segment in India, but the company has set ambitious targets in the AI PC segment, as well. With rising demand for AI-ready PCs, Asus has tried to differentiate its offerings across three segments of “everyday AI”, “next-level AI”, and “advanced AI” PCs. “For everyday AI, the standard, the benchmark is 10 TOPs (trillions of operations per second — a metric to measure AI performance),” Su said. “And then for 45 tops, we call it the next level AI, which is equivalent to Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs.” Finally, Asus’ high-end advanced AI PCs come with dedicated Nvidia graphics — the ProArt, ROG, and TUF series of laptops — that can deliver up to 321 TOPs. While the demand for AI PCs is gradually rising and the price point is coming down — Asus launched the Vivobook 16 Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X series shipset in February at Rs. 65,990 in India — the segment isn’t drawing everyday users. According to Su, people will begin to use AI applications on their PCs with Microsoft adding AI capabilities to its suite of apps, but they are not utilising the full strength of AI NPUs at this moment. “If you talk about a working profession or content creator — maybe for example, if I am a graphic designer using Adobe, which already uses AI to enhance their software. So maybe if I buy a next generation AI PC it might be meaningful to me,” Su said. “But today, if you ask me, will I recommend a student to spend more money to buy a Copilot+ PC? To be honest, I may not suggest. I may say, you just buy an everyday AI PC. That is sufficient for you.” Asus has a 40 percent market share in the AI PC segment in India. According to Su, AI PCs formed less than five percent of the company’s consumer notebook shipments in 2024. Asus aims to increase the share of AI PC shipments in the country to 10 to 15 percent by the end of 2025. The ROG Ally X handheld launched in India last year What’s Next for Asus Rog Ally Beyond gaming PCs, Asus has also found some success with its ROG Ally handheld in India, despite it being a niche piece of hardware. The original Ally launched in the country in 2023 and Asus followed it up with the ROG Ally X last year. According to Su, the handheld has maintained consistent sales in India over the past year. “I can give you some data points. Now, on average every month, we are selling around 400 to 500 units of ROG Ally in India. It’s quite consistent in the past almost one year,” he said. The number includes both the ROG Ally and the upgraded ROG Ally X, but the latter’s share is small — around five to 10 percent of the total, owing to its higher price point. “If you see in the segment, we are selling just 400, 500 units in a month, so maybe 6,000, 7,000 units in a year. Although I cannot say it’s bad, it’s not already become a big industry,” Su said. Su did not speak about the company’s India plans for the next generation of the ROG Ally but said that Asus would stick with the device in the market. “But we will definitely continue this segment (in India), because we see that there are customers for 400, 500 units every month, at least we should continue to see how we can identify a new area where people want to buy it,” he said. Asus is reportedly working on the next-generation Ally alongside a second handheld said to be a collaboration with Xbox — “Project Kennan”. Earlier this month, the puported Ally 2 and the Xbox-branded handheld surfaced online via a leaked FCC listing. Su, however, stopped short of sharing any details on what people can expect from the company’s next generation of handhelds. When Asus has news on the devices, he said, people will know. “Same as all the customers, I’m also waiting.” Source link #Asus #Arnold #GeForce #RTX #Series #ROG #Laptops #PCs #Whats #ROG #Ally Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Five Below: Here’s Why the Stock is On the Move Five Below: Here’s Why the Stock is On the Move Five Below (NASDAQ:), the discount retail store chain, was one of the top gainers on Tuesday, with its stock rising some 7% on the day to roughly $115 per share. The clear catalyst for the move was a massive upgrade from analysts at Citi, who bumped the price target up from $80 to $120 per share. It suggests only a slight gain over where the price wound up on Tuesday at nearly $115 per share. But it was just the latest in a slew of upgrades for the stock, based on some promising recent news from the retailer. Earlier this month, the firm announced a leadership transition on its board, as company co-founder Tom Vellios and board chair announced that he will not seek reelection and will take on an advisory role for the rest of 2025. He will be replaced by Mike Devine as chair. Devine has been on the Five Below board for 12 years and previously served as board chair at Deckers Outdoor (NYSE:). But the more notable development is that Five Below raised its guidance for its fiscal first quarter. Major Sales and Earnings Boost for Q1 In advance of its June 4 first-quarter earnings release, Five Below raised its guidance for Q1. It now expects net sales of approximately $967 million versus the prior guidance of $905 million to $925 million. Further, it lifted its comparable store guidance, calling for a massive 6.7% increase versus the prior guidance that estimated comparable sales to be somewhere between flat and a 2% increase. It also raised its number of new stores to 55, from the prior guidance of 50 new stores. Finally, it is calling for earnings to be in the range of 69 cents to 71 cents, up from the previous guidance of 44 cents to 55 cents. Further, adjusted earnings are expected to be in the range of 82 cents to 84 cents, up from the previous outlook of 50 cents to 61 cents. Citi analyst Paul Lejuez was impressed by the comparable sales growth. He sees the opportunity for double-digit comparable sales with easier year-over-year comparisons, fueled by an improved assortment of goods and simplified pricing. As a discount retailer, Five Below goods are likely more in demand in this slower-growing economic environment, with the possibility of rising inflation due to tariffs and other factors. The stock is up 9% YTD and has a P/E ratio of 23. However, it imported about 60% of its items from China, according to PYMNTS. It has since paused shipments from China due to tariffs and is developing a tariff mitigation strategy. Interested investors should tune in to the June 4 earnings for more on how its dealing with tariffs. 18. Zelenskiy says Russia has gathered 50,000 troops for offensive on northern Ukraine Zelenskiy says Russia has gathered 50,000 troops for offensive on northern Ukraine By Max Hunder KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said that Russia has gathered 50,000 troops near Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, but added that Kyiv had taken steps to prevent Moscow from conducting a large-scale offensive there. The build-up comes as Russia appears to be gearing up for a summer offensive in Ukraine while Kyiv waits for Moscow to present a memorandum laying out its conditions to proceed with ceasefire talks. Sumy lies across the border from Russia’s Kursk region where Ukraine previously seized and held a pocket of land for months, before being almost fully pushed out last month, although it says it still holds some areas there. “Their largest, strongest forces are currently on the Kursk front,” Zelenskiy told reporters on Tuesday. “To push our troops out of the Kursk region and to prepare offensive actions against the Sumy region.” Putin has said he wants a “buffer zone” along Russia’s border with Ukraine. Zelenskiy said he believed Russia wanted a buffer zone of about 10 kilometres (6 miles). Russia has captured at least four border villages in the region recently, and has been creeping slowly forwards over the past several weeks on parts of the frontline in eastern Ukraine near the city of Kostyantynivka. However, Zelenskiy said that the Russians had been pushed back in that area by 4 km (2.5 miles) over two days. Ukraine and Russia swapped 1,000 captives each after a meeting of the two countries’ delegations in Istanbul nearly two weeks ago which failed to produce a ceasefire sought by Ukraine, the U.S. and Europe. Zelenskiy said that he viewed Turkey, the ******** and Switzerland as the most realistic venues for further negotiations with Russia. He said interest in hosting talks had also been expressed by Malta, as well as unspecified African nations. Reuters previously reported that Moscow does not see the ******** as a serious venue for talks. Zelenskiy said that he will attend the next G7 summit after being invited by ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose country currently holds the bloc’s rotating presidency. He added that he will likely take part in the next EU summit. Speaking about Ukraine’s domestic arms production, Zelenskiy said he wanted $30 billion for Ukraine to fully fund the available capacity of the rapidly expanding sector. 20. Lindsay Lohan never thought she would star in a sequel Lindsay Lohan never thought she would star in a sequel Lindsay Lohan “never thought” she would star in a movie sequel. The actor has reprised her Freaky Friday alter ego Anna Coleman to star in Freakier Friday, and Lohan is “manifesting” the 2025 flick because it felt “really special” to see how her character has evolved. “I’m excited. It feels surreal. I’ve never thought I would do a movie where there would be a sequel,” the 38-year-old told the US issue of Elle magazine. “It’s something you don’t really think about. And then when you get to do it, and bring a character that you knew so well back to life, in a sense, it’s exciting. “There’s a comfort with it that you don’t find in a new character. It’s evolved. What are they like now? How can we shoot it? So it felt really special, and so did doing my first feature back with Disney again after not doing features for such a long time. “It’s a really nice thing.” Lohan, who was 15 years of age at the time of making Freaky Friday, said doing the sequel felt like coming home, and the actor loves that she can “share” the film with her husband Bader Shammas and their toddler son Luai. “And to be back there at this time and have a full life and be able to share it with my husband and my son, it definitely feels unique in a lot of ways, and it’s nice.” Freakier Friday picks up years after Freaky Friday, where Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her daughter Anna switched bodies and lived each other’s lives following a freak incident. Anna has a daughter and is about to have a step-daughter, and she and Tess fear “lightning might indeed strike twice” when the two families “merge”. 21. US Supreme Court rejects case about student’s ‘There are only two genders’ T-shirt US Supreme Court rejects case about student’s ‘There are only two genders’ T-shirt By John Kruzel WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Tuesday to hear a student’s challenge on free speech grounds to a Massachusetts public school’s decision to bar him from wearing a T-shirt reading “There are only two genders” due to concern about the message’s effect on transgender and other pupils. The justices turned away an appeal by the student, who was 12 at the time of the 2023 incident, of a lower court’s ruling upholding the ban as a reasonable restriction and rejecting his claim that the school’s action violated the U.S. Constitution’s protections against government abridgment of speech. The student, Liam Morrison, sued officials at John T. Nichols Middle School and the town of Middleborough, seeking monetary damages. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani and then the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against him. The 1st Circuit decision stated that “it was reasonable for Middleborough to forecast that a message displayed throughout the school day denying the existence of the gender identities of transgender and gender nonconforming students would have a serious negative impact on those students’ ability to concentrate on their classroom work.” Conservative Justice Samuel Alito, in a dissent from the Supreme Court’s decision to turn away the appeal, wrote that the 1st Circuit ruling was flawed and that it reflects a broader confusion in the lower courts. “As this case makes clear, some lower courts are confused on how to manage the tension between students’ rights and schools’ obligations,” Alito wrote in a dissent that was joined by fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas. “Our nation’s students, teachers and administrators deserve clarity on this critically important question.” The legal dispute implicates a 1969 Supreme Court precedent in a case known as Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District that lets public schools restrict student speech when it would “substantially disrupt” a school community. The issue of transgender rights is front and center in the U.S. culture wars. Since returning to office in January, Republican President Donald Trump has taken a hardline stance on transgender rights, targeting “gender ideology” and declaring that the U.S. government would recognize two sexes: male and female. The Supreme Court on May 6 permitted Trump’s administration to implement his ban on transgender people in the military. ‘A MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION’ Morrison, who was a seventh grade student at the time, wore the T-shirt reading “There are only two genders” to school in March 2023. His lawyers said in court papers he did so in order to “share his view that gender and sex are identical, and there are only two sexes – male and female.” His lawyers wrote in a Supreme Court filing that Morrison “hoped to start a meaningful conversation on gender ideology” as well as to protect other students against ideas that he considered “false and harmful” and to “show them compassionate people can believe that sex is binary.” A teacher reported the shirt to the school principal’s office, noting that LGBT students were present at school that day and expressing concerns that the shirt could disrupt classes. The principal asked the boy if he would be willing to change his shirt and return to class, but he declined. The principal then called the boy’s father, Chris Morrison, who opted to pick up his son from school rather than have him remove his shirt. School officials cited the dress code in the school’s student handbook, which stated: “Clothing must not state, imply, or depict hate speech or imagery that target(s) groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, ******* orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other classification.” In May 2023, the student again wore the T-shirt to school, but covered the words “only two” with a piece of tape that read “censored,” thus bearing the message: “There are (censored) genders.” He removed that shirt after being asked by school officials. During the proceedings, the school system’s superintendent said that some students at John T. Nichols Middle School “have attempted to commit suicide or have had suicidal ideations in the past few years, including members of the LGBTQ+ community,” and that some of those struggles were “related to their treatment based on their gender identities by other students.” The boy brought the lawsuit along with his father and stepmother. They were represented by the conservative legal group Alliance Defending Freedom. The plaintiffs sought a court order prohibiting school officials from barring his wearing of the T-shirt and declaring the disputed portions of the dress code unconstitutional. They also sought unspecified monetary damages. The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is expected to rule by the end of June in a major transgender rights case involving a legal challenge to Tennessee Republican-backed ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. Opera Neon brings this to our users’ fingertips,” said Henrik Lexow, Senior AI Product Director at Opera. You may like “We see it as a collaborative platform to shape the next chapter of agentic browsing together with our community.” Opera Neon keeps its complexity hidden by offering you a simple choice between Chat, Do and Make. (Image credit: Opera) Fully agentic on the web Of course, you can currently chat with AI in the standard Opera browser, which has access to Aria AI and ChatGPT in the sidebar, but Opera Neon is a fully agentic browser, which means you can ask it to perform tasks for you as well as chat or search with AI. That could include filling out a form that appears in the website you’re viewing, making a hotel reservation, or even going shopping. Best of all, it does all this locally in the browser, without risking your privacy or security. The AI agent inside Opera Neon has previously been showcased by Opera as Browser Operator and you can give it tasks with simple prompts like “Keep me updated on the latest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence,” and it would regularly collect and summarize the most relevant articles. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. So, instead of wading through an endless news feed, you’d get just what matters to you the most, neatly packaged. You can also chat with Opera Neon as if it were an AI chatbot, just like ChatGPT, and it can also search the web for you to find answers. (Image credit: Opera) Chat, Do and Make Opera Neon boils its core functionality down to three main options: Chat, Do and Make. Chat is the chatbot function. Here you can ask the AI contextual questions about the web page you are viewing and search the web. Do is where Opera Neon can interact with the website you are viewing. We’re talking about things like filling in forms, booking reservations and shopping. This is the technology we’ve previous known as Bowser Operator. Make is the truly new part of Opera Neon. Here you can ask the browser to make you something, and it will interpret what you mean, then go away and do it for you. Once you’ve tasked it with making something you’re free to go off and do something else. Opera Neon looks like being one of the most exciting uses of AI I’ve seen in a while. The prospect of being able to ask the AI questions about the website you’re currently viewing in the browser and getting reliable answers back isn’t new, but the agentic qualities of the browser sound incredibly valuable. 24. Sweeping review flagged for NSW selective school testing after tests postponed from crowd control chaos Sweeping review flagged for NSW selective school testing after tests postponed from crowd control chaos A sweeping review into the administration of this year’s opportunity class and selective high school testing across NSW, after “significant disruptions” resulted in 20,000 having their tests postponed and police getting involved in crowd control. The state’s Department of Education this year decided to host some of the selective school entrance exams in large halls in Randwick, Canterbury and Sydney Olympic Park. While the majority of testing centres across NSW delivered the testing as planned, the three major venues were significantly disrupted when parents arrived to pick up their children from morning sessions. Police were even deployed to assist with the massive crowds that followed, and afternoon tests had to be put off. Camera IconChaotic scenes erupted at selective school testing centres earlier in May as parents attempted to pick up their children, resulting in police being called in. The Daily Telegraph reports staff barricaded the doors when some parents became “aggressive”. 25. Jamie Dimon warned Trump’s agenda would push U.S. allies toward China—Greenland already says it may ‘look elsewhere’ for mining investment Jamie Dimon warned Trump’s agenda would push U.S. allies toward China—Greenland already says it may ‘look elsewhere’ for mining investment Amid growing unease with President Trump’s foreign policy, which JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warns could isolate the U.S. under an “America alone” doctrine, foreign governments like Greenland are rethinking their investment alliances and considering alternatives such as China. Dimon has emphasized the importance of maintaining strong economic and military partnerships, a warning that resonates as Greenland—home to vital untapped resources—signals frustration with U.S. diplomacy and explores other global investors to support its development goals. Foreign governments are beginning to shop around when it comes to drumming up investment, potentially stepping away from ties with Donald Trump’s America. The White House’s foreign policy under President Trump has raised eyebrows for a range of reasons, whether it’s been renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, claiming Canada will be adopted as the 51st state, or making bids to bring Greenland under its control. And that’s before you consider tariffs. The altered, often unpopular, stance of the Oval Office has led to economic experts like JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon to question whether Trump’s “America First” policy may end up as “America alone.” The biggest concern in that scenario is that America’s economic and military allies may turn their backs on the White House and instead look to another foreign powerhouse, China, for support. Writing in his annual letter to shareholders earlier this year, Dimon explained, “Keeping our alliances together, both militarily and economically, is essential. “The opposite is precisely what our adversaries want.” Unfortunately it seems that this is precisely what’s happening when it comes to some political conversations in Greenland, which Trump has threatened to “get” using military force, despite the country being an autonomous territory of Denmark. “We want to develop our business sector and diversify it, and that requires investments from outside,” said Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s minister for business and mineral resources, in an interview with the Financial Times. And when asked if that might include working with China, she added, “We do want to partner up with European and American partners. But if they don’t show up I think we need to look elsewhere.” Trump has long held an interest in Greenland citing “national and international” security concerns, given America’s proximity to the island. The fact that Greenland geographically sits on a potential flight path from the U.S. to Russia is also of note. But as well as the geographic proximity to the U.S., Greenland is also home to a wealth of untapped raw materials, including 25 of the 34 materials that Europe deems “critical” materials. The Trump 2.0 team has made its interest in securing such assets clear, having signed a deal with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky on precisely this issue in order to secure a military partnership between the two. To make matters more complex, Nathanielsen told the FT a memorandum of understanding on mineral development with the U.S. is due to expire soon, having first been signed under the previous Trump administration. She added, “We sort of hoped that the Trump administration would be more willing to engage in dialogue with Greenland about the mineral sector development. We got a bit more than we asked for, because we have no wish to be American.” Of course, with heightened tensions between the U.S. and China at present, the latter nation may not want to rock the boat any further and risk a return to April’s ****-for-tat trade war. China may be resistant to sign a deal with Greenland precisely because officials don’t want to “provoke” anything, added Nathanielsen. Picking a side Trump’s comments about folding Greenland into America are “disrespectful and distasteful,” the Greenland minister added. Her view is fitting with the vast majority of her peers, with a January poll finding 85% of people on the island didn’t wish to be part of the United States. Trump’s political ally and major donor, DOGE boss Elon Musk, has also said he “hoped” the people of Greenland would want to join the U.S. and would be “welcome” if they did. The survey conducted by pollster Verian, commissioned by the Danish newspaper Berlingske earlier this year, found that just 6% of Greenland’s population wanted to join America. Trump’s lobbying was accompanied by a visit to Greenland by one of his sons, Donald Trump Jr., which was criticized by some lawmakers in the country. But the nation will be conscious that despite its apparent distaste for Trump’s tactics, it does not want to burn bridges with its close military and economic ally. As Nathanielsen put it, “We are trying to figure out, what does the new world order look like?
