Judge considers whether Florida’s attorney general should be held in contempt over immigration law Judge considers whether Florida’s attorney general should be held in contempt over immigration law MIAMI (AP) — A federal judge was considering Thursday whether Florida’s attorney general disobeyed her order prohibiting the enforcement of a new state law making it a misdemeanor for people in the U.S. illegally to enter Florida, and whether he should be held in contempt and sanctioned. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams specified in her ruling last month that her temporary restraining order against enforcing the Florida law applied to all of the state’s local law enforcement agencies. The Miami judge later noted that there was a substantial likelihood that the Florida law would be found unconstitutional. But Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sent out an April 23 letter to Florida’s law enforcement agencies saying that he couldn’t prevent law enforcement officers from enforcing the law “where there remains no judicial order that properly restrains you from doing so.” “As set forth in the brief my office filed today, it is my view that no lawful, legitimate order currently impedes your agencies from continuing to enforce Florida’s new ******** entry and reentry laws,” Florida’s attorney general said in the letter. Dozens of people, including a U.S. citizen, have been arrested under the law. Uthmeier has appealed the judge’s order to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. In court papers, Uthmeier said that he was merely notifying local law enforcement agencies in the April 23 letter that he had filed a court brief that held a legal view disagreeing with the judge’s order. He had obeyed the judge’s order by notifying local law enforcement agencies in an April 18 letter that they couldn’t enforce the law while the court case proceeded, according to Uthmeier’s court filings. “There is no basis for contempt or sanctions,” Uthmeier said. “Interpreting an order to prohibit a state attorney general from disagreeing with a federal order — while following it — would also be an extraordinary, first-of-its-kind assertion of federal judicial power, implicating grave constitutional concerns.” But attorneys for an immigrants rights groups that challenged the Florida law said it was unacceptable that the Florida attorney general’s April 23 letter “encouraged arrests that he fully understood were specifically prohibited.” Even if Uthmeier’s arguments are taken at face value, that he was merely stating his legal position, he has done nothing to clear up the confusion despite given ample opportunities, said lawyers for the Florida Immigrant Coalition. They said the options the judge could consider include financial sanctions and referring Uthmeier’s conduct to the Florida Bar for disciplinary proceedings or to federal authorities for prosecution. “Considered objectively and in the context of the earlier letter, the Attorney General’s second letter plainly undermined the notice he was directed to provide, and invited arrests which he knew would be violations of this court’s order,” the immigrants rights’ lawyers said in court papers. “That is quintessential contempt of court.” ___ Follow Mike Schneider on the social platform Bluesky: @mikeysid.bsky.social. PlayStation’s Approach To Video Game Subscriptions Is “Healthier” Than Xbox’s, Former Exec Says PlayStation’s Approach To Video Game Subscriptions Is “Healthier” Than Xbox’s, Former Exec Says Subscription services for video games have grown over the years, but former PlayStation Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has expressed concern about them. In an interview, Yoshida spoke about how the expansion of first-party titles could eventually lead to third-party studios being shut out of subscription services, as the companies could prefer to hedge their bets with a growing library of first-party releases instead of experimental games. “If the only way for people to play games is through subscriptions, that’s really dangerous because what [type] of games can be created will be dictated by the owner of the subscription services,” Yoshida said to Game Developer at Gamescom LATAM. “That’s really, really risky because there must always be fresh new ideas tried by small developers that create the next wave of development. But if the big companies dictate what games can be created, I don’t think that will advance the industry.” You need a javascript enabled browser to watch videos. Once sales have tailed off on a first-party game, it usually finds its way onto PS Plus, thus allowing more people to experience it for the first time. In comparison, Microsoft’s main selling point for Xbox Game Pass is that games developed by its internal studios are day-one releases on its subscription program, and third-party games have also been included in this strategy. So far, 2025 has seen day-one launches of big titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, Doom: The Dark Ages, and South of Midnight on Xbox Game Pass. The releases have been fairly diverse as well, with games like Pentiment, Grounded, and Hi-Fi Rush joining traditional fare like Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6 and Forza Motorsport. Developer Rebellion’s newest game, Atomfall, was also “immediately profitable,” and the studio recently spoke about why it was a good business decision to release it through Game Pass. At the same time, another developer has spoken about the risks of Game Pass, and Microsoft has also clarified its own statements on the service potentially cannibalizing game sales. Yoshida did praise Microsoft for its backwards compatibility, a feat of engineering that he called “smart and very well planned” for its subscribers. PS Plus–and Xbox Game Pass–will be home to a day-one third-party release in June, as Remedy Entertainment’s FBC: Firebreak will be available through those services. The PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue was also updated this week with a few more titles, and June’s PS Plus games includes a few recent titles from 2024 like the Alone in the Dark remake, Destiny 2: The Final Shape, and NBA 2K25. Qubit breakthrough could make it easier to build quantum computers Qubit breakthrough could make it easier to build quantum computers Could a new approach help make quantum computers error-free? Nord Quantique A ********* quantum computing start-up claims its new qubit will enable much smaller and cheaper error-free quantum computers. But getting there will be a steep challenge. To correct its own errors, a traditional computer saves duplicates of information in multiple places, a practice called redundancy. For quantum computers to achieve their own version of redundancy, they typically require many additional quantum bits, or qubits – hundreds of thousands of them. Now, Julien Camirand Lemyre at Nord Quantique and his colleagues have created a qubit that they say will let them slash that number to mere hundreds. “The basic underlying idea behind our hardware is… having qubits that have intrinsic redundancy,” he says. There are several competing versions of qubits, such as tiny superconducting circuits and extremely cold atoms. Nord Quantique’s qubit is a superconducting cavity filled with microwave radiation: the particles that carry this radiation, photons, are trapped inside the cavity where they bounce back and forth, and information can be encoded into their quantum states. Similar qubit designs have been built before, but the new one is the first with “multimode encoding”. This means that the researchers used several of the photon’s properties at once to store information – an encoding method that makes that data more resilient to common quantum computer errors. Victor Albert at the University of Maryland says that quantum error correction requires either more qubits – so that information can be stored in a group of connected qubits rather than a single one, protecting the system from any individual qubit’s failure – or for each qubit to be “*******” in the sense of how information is stored within it. The new qubit uses the second technique, storing information in a mathematical space that is effectively four-dimensional, he says. Because of this, Nord Quantique projects that its fault-tolerant quantum computers will be up to 50 times smaller than those that use qubits made from superconducting circuits, like the most advanced ones built to date. Additionally, the company estimates machines built with its qubits will consume just a tenth as much power as these other machines. However, Nord Quantique has not yet presented data on more than one qubit. Nor has it used its new qubit in a computation, other than to verify that it does in fact support multimode encoding. Many steps and technical challenges remain on the team’s road to quantum computing at scale. “It is too early to tell whether this approach towards fault-tolerant computation… is intrinsically more advantageous than some of the other approaches pursued,” says Barbara Terhal at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Michel Devoret at Yale University says the new work is “an incremental, rather than a groundbreaking, result in the science of quantum error correction”, but it does show the company’s mastery of technical challenges. Lemyre says they are now working on building more qubits and improving their current design. For example, they want to add “perfecting mechanisms” that will manipulate the information stored within the qubit, as has to happen when a quantum computer is running a calculation. They expect to build a practical quantum computer with more than 100 of their error-resilient qubits by 2029. EA Scraps Open World ****** Panther Game That Could’ve Saved the Marvel Gaming Division EA Scraps Open World ****** Panther Game That Could’ve Saved the Marvel Gaming Division EA has been pretty much silent regarding titles like Iron Man, Need For Speed, and more. However, some light has been shed on their ****** Panther IP, but unfortunately, it’s not good news. Apparently, EA has shut down one of its studios, Cliffhanger Games, which was working on a ****** Panther game, which everyone was excited for. The studio shutdown is followed by a series of layoffs, which have been happening in the industry quite a lot. It has also been revealed that EA wants to focus on a handful of its franchises, which include The Sims, Battlefield, and other titles that work for them. Despite all that, EA is missing out on a huge opportunity, as a ****** Panther open-world game could have been a massive success. EA’s shutdown of Cliffhanger Games leaves no hope for a ****** Panther open-world game Who would have thought this would happen? | Image Credit: Electronic Arts The story of Cliffhanger Games being shut down came from IGN’s Rebekah Valentine, who cited the full story of what’s happening at Electronic Arts. It is said that an email was sent by EA Entertainment president, Laura Miele, regarding the shutdown of the studio. In Miele’s words, “these decisions are hard” when it came to shutting down the studio. EA and Marvel had an agreement for releasing three games, among which the ****** Panther and Iron Man games were known. There is no news about what the third game is, or whether EA will be able to fulfill that requirement. Since the ****** Panther game has been cancelled, there’s no saying the mystery title could see the same fate. The ****** Panther game was pretty anticipated as it was supposed to give an authentic experience of Wakanda through an open world. Moreover, it would have been an original story that encompassed Wakandan technology, heroes, and more. All of which sounds exciting, but EA chose to throw it all away in the blink of an eye. Still, it is suggested that the Iron Man game is seeing steady support at Motive, which does keep some hope for EA-collaborated Marvel games. But their decision to throw away one of the most anticipated titles, to save some old IPs, is questionable. The Sims already has huge competition after the release of InZoi‘s early access. Moreover, the new Sims game seemingly doesn’t attract the fans after they saw some leaked footage. Why save something that is a deadbeat? Is it another EA’s greedy move, who knows? What’s the game plan of EA moving forward? EA’s current focus is to put all the creative energy into “the most significant growth opportunities.” Not only that, but there are reports that EA has laid off some of its workforce, but there are no exact numbers. However, in the words of Miele, they are working to provide those individuals opportunities as it affects them a lot. They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles. There is pretty regular stuff, companies say, after laying off. To what extent it would be followed will always remain a mystery. However, it is said that EA had made sure that some alternative is given to the affected employees through their placement programme. Leaving some hope for the talented folks there. Efforts will be given for selected IPs like Battlefield, The Sims, Apex Legends, and some of their famous titles. There’s no news regarding the Need For Speed franchise as well, since Unbound didn’t do so well either. Support will also extend towards EA Sports releases as well, so they’re in the safe zone for now. Do you think EA’s decision to cut off a major studio for supporting their “handful of games” will work out? What games do you think EA should be focusing on more at the moment? Amazing images reveal new details in the sun’s atmosphere Amazing images reveal new details in the sun’s atmosphere Astronomers have revealed new processes taking place in our sun’s atmosphere, thanks to exquisite new images of the star. Dirk Schmidt at the US National Solar Observatory and his colleagues used the Goode Solar Telescope in California to produce the images. They used a technique known as adaptive optics to remove the blur of Earth’s atmosphere when observing the sun, allowing them to observe features in the corona, the star’s outer atmosphere. “You see dramatically more detail that it’s unlikely anybody has seen before,” says Schmidt. Plasma streams in the sun’s corona Schmidt et al./NJIT/NSO/AURA/NSF Those details include streams of plasma dancing through the corona and loops of plasma known as solar prominences breaking apart and reforming. The images also show some of our best-ever views of coronal rain, city-sized droplets of plasma that fall to the sun’s surface as they cool and become denser. “They are pulled down to the sun’s surface by gravity,” says Schmidt. The observations were taken in the summers of 2023 and 2024. It is hoped that some of the imagery might give us new insights into why the sun’s corona is so much hotter than its surface – millions of degrees compared with thousands of degrees – a mystery that remains unresolved. One possibility might be magnetic fields snapping together in the sun’s corona. “In many images and movies we provide, you can see tangled and twisted structures and twisting motions on very small scales,” says Schmidt, which might cause nanoflares that heat the corona. Some features in the images are a mystery, including a wisp of plasma that morphed into multiple blobs. “We are currently lacking a definitive explanation,” says Schmidt. “I believe this could be something new, and it will be exciting to see how other scientists pick this up.” Topics: Source link #Amazing #images #reveal #details #suns #atmosphere Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
WeCreat Vision Pro 45W review: Greater than the sum of its parts WeCreat Vision Pro 45W review: Greater than the sum of its parts Why you can trust Tom’s Hardware Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test. The WeCreat Vision Pro is a fully enclosed 45-watt laser engraver and cutter that has superseded the original WeCreat Vision machine, a popular choice for home businesses. The Vision Pro features a large build volume of 19.7 x 12.6 inches (500 x 320 mm), a powerful 45-watt laser, and a sleek, satin-****** enclosure. During our review, we engraved slate coasters, silicone watch bands, birch plywood, and even stainless steel with ease. The Auto Pass Through Feeder enabled the processing of long sheets of material, the Rotary Pro worked flawlessly to engrave on stainless steel tumblers, and the 2W IR Laser Module easily engraved a stainless steel bottle opener with no surface preparation required. All these optional accessories can drive up the price, which is the primary drawback of this system. The WeCreat Vision Pro Super Pack bundle ($3,449.99 as of the writing of this review) is absolutely deserving of a spot on the list of the best laser cutters and engravers, and earned the title of Best Laser Cutter for Home Business, replacing the previous generation WeCreat Vision. The beginner-friendly features like the project library and material test array on the MakeIt! software are simple and intuitive for beginners, but advanced users and small businesses will no doubt appreciate the ability to add accessories à la carte depending on their offerings. The inside of the Vision Pro is filled with foam and boxes for the accessories, and there are six screws that need to be removed after shipping to allow the unit to lift up and down during auto-focusing. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The laser bed trays, rotary attachment, air assist module, wi-fi antenna, and all of the attachments are included in boxes in the unit as well as all the cables required for use. The Vision Pro also includes a pair of test engravings to demonstrate the machine is functional before shipping. Included are both a bitmap engraving of a cat as well as a linework test that shows fonts, straight lines, and circular profiles in an array. Design of the WeCreat Vision Pro Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The motion system and internal wiring of the Vision Pro is composed of prosumer components that have been designed with service, maintenance, and replacement in mind. The gantry is stiff and uses linear rods to move the engraving module back and forth in the X-axis, and the cables running up the Y-axis are safely wrapped inside a cable chain that prevents them from getting kinked, tangled, or caught during fast movements. The air assist is external to the unit, and provides compressed air to the toolhead to blow smoke away during engraving and prevents buildup or charring on top surfaces. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The power switch is located on the rear of the Vision Pro, and is located next to the air assist power plug, flexible hose coupling, USB port, and exhaust for the fume extractor. The addition of Wi-Fi is a welcome feature, and allows jobs to be sent without having the engraver directly connected to a computer. The included Wi-Fi antenna worked perfectly for connecting to a local network and I was able to send jobs remotely before starting processing by pressing the green button on the front of the unit. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The Vision Pro is a large machine, and occupies a substantial footprint on a workbench. The signature feature of the Vision series from WeCreat is the auto-focusing laser, which moves the entire enclosure and laser gantry up and down to compensate for the thickness of the material. This clever addition allows for a project height of up to 140mm (5.51”), so taller objects can be engraved without needing to manually focus. (Image credit: WeCreat) This automatic focusing is a unique feature on the WeCreat Vision family of engravers, and it’s one of my favorite things about the Vision Pro. Focusing the laser and setting the height is similar to leveling or calibrating the bed on an FDM 3D printer: simple in theory, frustrating in practice, and everyone has their own process or secret for making it work. Lower cost lasers like the Creality CR Laser Falcon typically use a hinged arm to drop and manually set the offset, a step that is completely skipped by the Vision Pro. By removing the manual step from the process, WeCreat has significantly reduced the time it takes to set up a build or run trial-and-error tests to find the right offset. The 45-watt diode laser is advertised as being the equivalent of a 60-watt laser due to using a concentrator that WeCreat refers to as BeamFocus. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The HD camera is located underneath the lid of the Vision Pro, and doesn’t require any calibration after assembly. This camera shows the available work area and gives an accurate image that can be used for precisely positioning jobs to avoid misalignment or cutting off the edge of a piece of material. Just like the automatic focusing, this brings down the barrier to entry significantly for new users and makes planning cuts a simple process. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The Vision Pro has multiple safety features integrated, including a fire-retardant metal enclosure, a light-blocking lid for reducing the intensity of any reflected light from the laser, and is rated as a Class 1 laser device. The exhaust port on the back pulls smoke and odor out of the machine through a flexible hose, which can be connected to an external vent, air handling system, or the optional fume extractor designed by WeCreat. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) While engraving plywood may only result in a small amount of smoke, using the laser to cut through a 5mm piece of basswood is a quick way to fill a room with smoke and odor. The Vision Pro has an exhaust port on the back, which can be used to mitigate the amount of smoke generated during material processing. The AirGuard Ultra Fume Extractor is an optional accessory that connects to the exhaust port via a hose and filters the air through a 5-stage filter to catch large particulates as well as fine dust and other VOCs (volatile organic compounds). (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) I tested the Vision Pro in a garage, and the amount of smoke generated during cutting would make using the machine impossible without some level of air handling and filtration. Using the AirGuard Ultra, the smoke is visibly pulled from the enclosure and into the fume extractor, providing much-needed filtration during material processing. Compared to the more industrial look of the original Fume Extractor that was launched with the original Vision and Vista, the AirGuard Ultra looks more like a portable humidifier or a small AC unit. Software for WeCreat Vision Pro (Image credit: WeCreat) The WeCreat MakeIt! software has two primary uses: a catalog for sorting through projects and a build processing preparation interface. The ‘Discover’ tab in MakeIt! allows users to search for projects based on keywords or materials, so it’s easy to find art designed specifically for a holiday, special occasion, or other interest. For example: I saw this cycling medal display while searching through the catalog, and decided it was perfect to commemorate a recent cycling ride. (Image credit: WeCreat) The integrated camera in the WeCreat Vision Pro provides a full layout of the available work area, making job layout an easy task. I found a piece of plywood with enough space for my design, set the line type to ‘Cut’, and watched as the Vision Pro cut out the design in 12 minutes and 48 seconds. This was accomplished without any additional work beyond changing the material type in the software; the focusing and cut parameters were all set automatically and without any input from me. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Choosing a project in the catalog and sending it to the laser took me longer than the laser took to cut out the design, and it was ready to hang on my wall in under 30 minutes from when I first saw the design. The MakeIt! software exposes all the parameters required for serious work and dial in the laser, but the default settings worked well enough for me to believe a beginner could get started with the Vision Pro without running into any issues. (Image credit: WeCreat) The Material Testing feature is a powerful way to quickly validate new materials and test parameters without having to set up dozens of individual tests. The MakeIt! software includes the ability to generate an array of squares with a min/max power setting as well as min/max speed settings, which is a quick way to test how a specific material will behave during engraving. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) I ran an identical test on both birch plywood as well as walnut plywood, and the impact of the parameter adjustment is clear. On higher power and speeds, the birch plywood appears darker while the walnut plywood appears lighter as the top layer is progressively removed. Test swatches like this are helpful to understand engraving depth before committing to a larger or more time-consuming build. (Image credit: WeCreat) The ‘AI Generate’ feature is an interesting one in that it gives users the ability to enter a prompt (Ex. Highly detailed image of a brown bear by the river, mountains in background, deep engraving style, in ****** and white) and generates a bitmap image as an output. I marked this feature as a negative on the original WeCreat Vision due to the heavy promotion of this underwhelming feature, but the Vision Pro includes it nearly as an afterthought. I experimented with a few different styles before hitting a daily limit of generated images, and made a logo for a non-existent sporting goods company. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The bitmap quality is high, and the engraved image on plywood looks almost like a carving or handmade engraving. When making a similar version of the image for a different aspect ratio, I found the image changed too much between each generate to get a consistent feel. The AI function is fun to experiment with but lacks refinement, control and suffers from an unclear daily limit. This feature will likely only be useful to someone looking for a quick image that would be too time-consuming to draw manually. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: WeCreat) (Image credit: WeCreat) One of my favorite features of the MakeIt! software is the ‘Extract Image’ tool, which allows users to put something under the camera of the Vision Pro, take a picture, and isolate or process specific parts of the image. I placed the box of the 2W IR Laser module in the machine and snapped an image of the component illustration. Then, I extracted and processed the linework I wanted to duplicate. Using the offset tool, I also added a contour around the illustration and assigned it to be a cut line to complete my duplicate of the illustration. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) With impressive resolution, the Vision Pro first traced out the bitmap image that I isolated and then cut around the perimeter, creating a scaled-down replica of the illustration I initially extracted. For anyone looking to duplicate an older logo, simple illustration, or other image without needing photo editing software, this feature highlights the power of the MakeIt! software. Engraving / Cutting with the WeCreat Vision Pro Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: WeCreat) (Image credit: WeCreat) For users without laser engraver experience, the WeCreat Vision Pro makes it refreshingly easy to go from vector image to finished build in only a few clicks. The projects included in the software are on the simple side, but creating something like a ‘World’s Best Mom’ trophy without any design work is a fun and easy way to make personalized gifts without a degree in digital illustration. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) During engraving, the table that the Vision Pro was on would occasionally shake and cause the workpiece to move around on the laser bed slightly. I found the WeCreat Laser Bed Clips by Printables user jekamis and printed a few in Prusament Galaxy ****** ABS on a Bambu Lab X1-Carbon, one of the best 3D printers. These worked great for holding the workpiece down during engraving and reducing the impact of vibrations caused by fast travel moves. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) One of my favorite materials included in the sample pack was the Dual Layer Silicone watch band, which happened to be compatible with my Apple Watch. This dual-layer material is ****** on the outside and has a rainbow gradient underneath which is revealed by removing the top layer. Using some of the included images, I added a few fish and some linework to the strap and revealed the colorful artwork by using the ‘Fill Engrave’ mode and default speed and power levels. (Image credit: WeCreat) The Vision Pro also includes presets for working slate coasters, a popular item for customization due to their small size, durable nature, and ease of engraving. Using the default power and speed settings for slate, I customized one of the projects in the MakeIt! library by adding my name and scaling to fit the coaster included in the material sample kit. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Using 100% power at a speed of 453mm/s, the coaster took just under 18 minutes and came out perfectly on the first try. When first removed from the work area, there’s some dust from the engraving process scattered across the surface of the coaster. This was removed by gently wiping with a damp cloth, and the engraving looked even and professional after cleaning. Coasters like this are one of my favorite gifts to make for friends and family, as they are fast, durable, and inherently useful to almost everyone. Using the 2W Infrared Laser Module (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) WeCreat included the 2W Infrared Laser Module with the Vision Pro, an optional accessory that is designed specifically for engraving on stainless steel, silver, gold, and other metals. Swapping out between the standard 45W diode module and the 2W 1064nm laser module involves removing 5 screws and took me about 5 minutes. The entire module rests on a PCB that sticks out from the back of the toolhead, which made me a bit nervous when swapping it out due to the relatively fragile nature of most printed circuit boards. (Image credit: WeCreat) Engraving on a stainless steel bottle opener as a test, I grabbed artwork from the MakeIt! sample library and used the ‘Fill Engrave’ setting to process the design. Engraving this small pattern took about 20 minutes, but the resulting engraved stainless steel bottle opener looks like a professional job that would be at home in a gift shop, tourist attraction, or corporate swag bag. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: WeCreat) (Image credit: WeCreat) It’s easy to get excited by the results from using the 2W IR laser module, and the razor-thin linework on a material test array shows that the Vision Pro is ready to tackle the challenge of engraving metal at home. This type of engraving can be used for customizing and personalizing consumer products like bottle openers as well as engraving serial numbers or tracking information on high-value machined components. Rotary Engraving with the WeCreat Vision Pro Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Like many other laser engravers in this price range, the Vision Pro is capable of rotary engraving for things like drink tumblers, glasses, rings, and other cylindrical objects. The optional Rotary Pro module includes several new features specifically intended for engraving on larger tumblers (such as the incredibly popular Stanley 40 oz.) as well as spherical or smaller objects. Installing the Rotary Pro only takes two bolts and a few minutes, most of which was spent fiddling with the just-slightly-too-short cable to plug in the back of the unit. (Image credit: WeCreat) The Rotary Pro tagline is “Become an Expert on Your 1st Try”, and I found it to be an accurate description of the rotary process. The MakeIt! software includes a special cylindrical layout when using the Rotary Pro, which shows not only the available work area but also all of the same settings available in the standard layout. Once again, the auto-focus of the Vision Pro is a huge benefit here for hands-free calibration on cylindrical models: just measure the circumference, diameter, lay out the project, and click ‘Start’. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Using the 45-watt diode laser module, I whipped up a Mother’s Day tumbler using one of the provided project files and a coated stainless steel tumbler. Just like the 2W IR laser module, this optional accessory offers tremendous value for the price and will be an easy-to-justify purchase for anyone interested in expanding their small business offerings. Pass Through Engraving with the WeCreat Vision Pro (Image credit: WeCreat) If the 500 x 320 mm build area isn’t large enough for your projects or you want to make more parts per job, the optional WeCreat Auto Pass Through Feeder allows you to feed even larger sheets of material up to 460mm x 3700mm (14.17” x 145.67”) for batch processing. The staggering 12-foot length is long enough to fit most sheets of plywood sold at hardware stores and is large enough to cut a sign or engrave an ad for a shop. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The assembly involved setting up the primary base and adding the material rollers, and required the full use of a pair of four-foot tables pushed together. Once assembled, the bottom is removed from the Vision Pro, and the entire machine can be placed on top of the feeder. The Auto Pass Through Feeder uses a knob to adjust the tension on the rollers. This can be adjusted depending on the thickness and type of the material. The second knob can be used to advance or retract the material, which is useful for the material preview on the MakeIt! software. Using a sheet of 5mm birch plywood that measured 12 inches wide and 24 inches long, I adjusted the rollers, advanced the material, and moved on to the software prep. (Image credit: WeCreat) The MakeIt! software has a dedicated ‘Auto Pass Through Feeder’ mode, which shows a camera preview and allows the user to lay out parts past the view of the camera. I was impressed with how easy the process was, and decided to make some simple medallions to test out the functionality. After creating an engraving and cutting step, I duplicated the model and moved it to a few different locations on the board. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Each individual medallion made a satisfying ‘click’ as the cut line was completed, and the Vision Pro would automatically move the sheet of plywood forward and begin working on the next engraving. The Auto Pass Through Feeder worked flawlessly, and advanced the material during the job each time one of the medallions was complete. Bottom Line (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The amount of ancillary equipment like fume extractors, air compressors, and other safety equipment means that buying a laser can be a daunting experience for a first-timer. The WeCreat Vision Pro is clearly targeting the market of prosumers who want a laser for small business but don’t want to source everything piece-by-piece. The large, enclosed, and vented build area combined with a fume extractor allows users to hit the ground running within minutes of unboxing, not hours. If you are thinking about striking out on your own with a business manufacturing custom engraved trophies or collectibles, it’s easy to see the Vision Pro as an essential part of your growth. Overall, I was impressed with the Vision Pro during testing and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to a beginner as a first laser. I also wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to a power user looking for advanced functionality with the optional add-ons, so it’s safe to say the Vision Pro has earned its spot on the list of the best laser cutters and engravers as the Best Laser Cutter for Home Business. The Vision Pro, as reviewed (Super Pack variant), is currently listed at $3,449.99 if purchased as a bundle. Ordering the Vision Pro as a standalone unit and purchasing all the accessories separately totals to $4,269.94, an amount that should make users think about buying the bundle if they’re considering expanding the abilities of the Vision Pro in the future. If you like the integrated ecosystem of the WeCreat family but are looking for something slightly less expensive, the WeCreat Vista is available for $699.99, but lacks several of the advanced features of the Vision Pro. For an even more economically priced model, the $169.99 Two Trees TTS-55 also shows up on our list of the best laser cutters and engravers and offers a no-frills, stripped-down experience. Trump adviser Hassett confident tariffs will stay despite judges’ ruling Trump adviser Hassett confident tariffs will stay despite judges’ ruling National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett speaks to reporters at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 14, 2025. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters A top economic advisor to President Donald Trump expressed confidence Thursday that court rulings throwing out aggressive tariffs will be overturned on appeal. Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said in an interview that he fully believes the administration’s efforts to use tariffs to ensure fair trade are perfectly legal and will resume soon. “We’re right that America has been mishandled by other governments,” Hassett said during a Fox Business interview. “This trade negotiation season has been really, really effective for the American people.” The comments follow a ruling from judges on the Court of International Trade who said that Trump exceeded his authority on tariffs, which are aimed both at combating barriers against American goods abroad and stemming the flow of fentanyl across the U.S. border. While the Centers for Disease Control has said that fentanyl is the primary driver in domestic overdose deaths, the judges ruled that related tariffs “fail because they do not deal with the threats set forth in those orders.” Hassett bristled at the ruling and said the administration will continue its anti-fentanyl efforts. “These activist judges are trying to slow down something right in the middle of really important negotiations,” he said. “The idea that the fentanyl crisis in America is not an emergency is so appalling to me that I am sure that when we appeal, this decision will be overturned.” The administration has multiple options to get around the judges’ ruling, including other sections of trade laws it can utilize. However, Hassett said that’s not the plan at the moment. “The fact is that there are measures that we can take with different numbers that we can start right now. There are different approaches that would take a couple of months to put these in place,” he said. “We’re not planning to pursue those right now, because we’re very very confident that this ruling is incorrect.” Source link #Trump #adviser #Hassett #confident #tariffs #stay #judges #ruling Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Russian military figure killed in explosion deep inside the country, authorities say Russian military figure killed in explosion deep inside the country, authorities say A Russian deputy governor and prominent veteran of Moscow’s war in Ukraine was killed in an explosion in southern Russia early on Thursday, authorities said. Zaur Aleksandrovich Gurtsiev, 29, died alongside another man in the blast on a street in Stavropol, which investigators said “committed using a homemade explosive device.” “As part of the investigation, the scene of the incident is being inspected, examinations are being ordered, and the necessary investigative actions are being carried out to establish all the circumstances of the incident,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a Thursday statement. Video footage circulated online and on state media appears the show the moment of the blast, which occurs just as Gurtsiev meets the other man in a darkened street, near a row of parked cars. After the blast, the footage seemingly shows Gurtsiev lying on the ground, while the second man is rocked back by the explosion. The man who died in the explosion in Stavropol along with Gurtsiev rented an apartment in a building near the scene of the incident, emergency services told state media outlet TASS. Regional governor Vladimir Vladimirov wrote on Telegram that “all versions are being considered, including the organization of a terrorist attack” involving Ukraine. Gurtsiev had taken part in the “Time of Heroes” program set up by President Vladimir Putin, used to promote veterans of Russia’s war in Ukraine to official positions in the government. His appointment as deputy regional governor was announced personally by Putin. According to the Time of Heroes website, “Gurtsiev, despite his relatively young age, led the air part of the operation to liberate Mariupol.” “He introduced his developments in the technology of targeting missiles, which allowed them to increase their accuracy and effectiveness many times over, including hitting the Azov supply base.” Russian forces seized control of the port city of Mariupol in 2022 following a brutal 86-day siege – one of the deadliest and most destructive battles since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. According to United Nations estimates, 90% of residential buildings were damaged or destroyed in Mariupol during Russian attacks, and around 350,000 people out of the pre-war population of about 430,000 were forced to flee. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview earlier this year that 20,000 civilians are believed to have been killed, though the death toll cannot be independently verified. Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of trying to cover up evidence of civilian casualties, a claim the Kremlin denies. Gurtsiev is the latest in a number of Russian military figures to have been killed inside the country over the past year, a ******* in which the ramifications of Moscow’s war have increasingly been felt domestically. Last month Russian authorities charged a “Ukrainian special services agent” with terrorism, after he was detained in connection with a car explosion that killed Russian General Yaroslav Moskalik, the deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. And in February Armen Sarkisyan, the founder of a pro-Russian militia group in eastern Ukraine – described by authorities in Kyiv as a “criminal mastermind” – died following a bombing in central Moscow. The bombing took place in an upmarket residential complex in the capital city, state media outlet TASS reported at the time. Nvidia Will Set a New High Soon, Then Keep Rallying — Here’s Why Nvidia Will Set a New High Soon, Then Keep Rallying — Here’s Why NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:)’s stock price will soon set a new all-time high if it hasn’t by the time this article is read. The reason why is that the Q1 release laid to rest fears centered on China restrictions, AI demand, and the strength of core semiconductor businesses. The key takeaways for investors and traders are that the results were strong even without China; adding the lost revenue into the picture makes Q1 another impressive event in a string of market-wowing reports, and the guidance is equally solid. While slightly below the analysts’ consensus, the loss of China revenue and expectation for ramping business in Saudi Arabia and other recently unlocked markets more than offset it. Ultimately, regardless of AI and NVIDIA’s position within the industry, this company is generating substantial profits, which serve as a strong catalyst for stock prices. Regarding profits, the company’s net profit increased by 26% to $18.7 billion, despite the impact of China. That resulted in a $10.4 billion increase in cash on the balance sheet, a 25% gain, leaving the company with over $53.6 billion in cash on hand. NVIDIA’s Forecast for a Minimum 25% Upside is Firming The analysts’ response to the news is telling. MarketBeat tracks a single price target reduction; however, the negativity is offset by the new target price of $186, which is well above the consensus estimate, and the other 12 revisions tracked within the first 18 hours of the release. They include 12 price target increases and an upgrade to a Buy rating. The critical takeaway is that the consensus of new targets and the trimmed set equal $167, above the consensus estimate ahead of the release, with 61% of the targets leading to the high-end range. That puts this market in the $220 region, a gain of roughly 65% from the pre-release price points, and possibly reached before the end of the year. The initial market response has also been positive. The stock price began to rise immediately after the release and continued to show strength into the premarket session the next day. The market for this stock is indicated to open at least 5% above its pre-release close, sufficient to put it above a critical resistance target. In this scenario, there is only one thing standing between this market and the next leg of its uptrend: resistance at the all-time high. Assuming that level is broken, NVIDIA’s market has a clear path forward and can easily reach the $180 level by mid- to late-summer. NVIDIA’s Price Action Confirms a Bullish Flag Continuation Pattern The chart set up is very bullish. NVIDIA’s market rebounded from tariff-induced lows in April and May, forming a Bullish Flag in late May. The post-release action confirms the flag as a continuation signal and activates a target movement equal to the flagpole. The flagpole is worth nearly $50, sufficient to put this market at the $185 level. The timing of the move is questionable. However, the flagpole formed in about six weeks, which is a likely timeframe for the post-release advance. Institutions may be the deciding factor. They own about 65% of the stock and have been buying on balance this year. They provide a solid support base and tailwind for price action that would undercut the rally if removed. However, with the company generating profits in this manner, that is unlikely. The expectation is that NVIDIA will soon begin to accelerate its capital return, which may include increased dividend distributions and share buybacks. As it stands, the dividend is a token amount, allowing dividend-only funds and managers to participate. The buybacks are more substantial, reducing the share count by more than 1.1% on average for Q1. Swiss residents in shock after glacier debris buries village Swiss residents in shock after glacier debris buries village By Dave Graham WILER, Switzerland (Reuters) -Swiss residents were struggling on Thursday to absorb the scale of devastation caused by a huge chunk of glacier that has buried most of their picturesque village, in what scientists suspect is a dramatic example of the impact of climate change on the Alps. A deluge of ice, mud and rock crashed down the mountain on Wednesday, engulfing some 90% of the village of Blatten. Its 300 residents had already been evacuated earlier in May after part of the mountain behind the Birch Glacier began to crumble. However, rescue teams with search dogs were still scouring the area on Thursday for a missing 64-year-old man after an initial scan with thermal drones found nothing. As the Swiss army closely monitored the situation, some experts warned of the risks of flooding as vast mounds of debris almost two kilometers across are clogging the path of the River Lonza, causing a huge lake to swell amid the wreckage. “I don’t want to talk just now, I lost everything yesterday. I hope you understand,” said one middle-aged woman from Blatten, declining to give her name as she sat alone disconsolately in front of a church in the neighbouring village of Wiler. Nearby, the road ran along the valley before ending abruptly at the mass of mud and debris now blanketing her own village. Just a few roofs poked up through the sea of sludge. A thin cloud of dust hung in the air over the Kleines Nesthorn Mountain where the rockslide occurred while a helicopter buzzed overhead. Martin Henzen, another Blatten resident, said he was still trying to process what had occurred and did not want to speak for others in the village, saying only: “Most are calm, but they’re obviously affected.” They had been making preparations for some kind of natural disaster but “not for this scenario,” he added, referring to the scale of destruction. ‘ENORMOUS PLUG’ But the immediate dangers might not be over. “The water from the River Lonza cannot flow down the valley because there is an enormous plug,” Raphael Mayoraz, a cantonal geologist, told Swiss national broadcaster SRF. “The worst case scenario is possible flooding.” Up to one million cubic meters of water are accumulating daily as a result of the debris damming up the river, said Christian Huggel, a professor of environment and climate at the University of Zurich. Matthias Ebener, a spokesperson for local authorities, said some residents of neighbouring villages had been evacuated as a precaution. The incident has revived concern about the impact of rising temperatures on Alpine permafrost which has long frozen gravel and boulders in place, creating new mountain hazards. For years, the Birch Glacier has been creeping down the mountainside, pressured by shifting debris near the summit. Matthias Huss, head of the Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS), pointed to the likely influence of climate change in loosening the rock mass in the permafrost zone, which triggered this week’s collapse. “Unexpected things happen at places that we have not seen for hundreds of years, most probably due to climate change,” he told Reuters. Bitcoin Rises as Trump Tariffs Are Blocked, ETF Demand Surges — New Highs Ahead? Bitcoin Rises as Trump Tariffs Are Blocked, ETF Demand Surges — New Highs Ahead? BTC rises towards 109k, recovering from 106.8k. The US International Trade Court blocked Trump’s tariffs. BTC ETFs outperform Gold. BTC outperforms the Nasdaq, Gold & USD. Seasonality is less supportive in June. has recovered from its 106.8k low yesterday, rising towards 109k. The largest cryptocurrency trades 1.5% higher, boosted by favourable trade headlines and persistent ETF demand. Bitcoin, the broader cryptocurrency market, and risk assets are rising on Tuesday following a ruling by the US International Trade Court, which blocked Trump’s trade tariffs. The court ruled that Trump overstepped his powers by using emergency laws to justify the bulk of his trade levies. The market has reacted positively to the news. However, these latest developments add to the uncertainty surrounding trade tariffs. The White House has appealed the decision, which could ultimately be ruled on by the Supreme Court. Sentiment Analysis While headline risk remains elevated, sentiment analysis is favourable towards Bitcoin. The Fear and Greed Index has hovered around the Greed level (close to 70) for a third week. This level is considered to be supportive of a healthy, balanced uptrend, with no signs of overheating. Another tool for gauging sentiment is BTC ETF flows, which have been persistent over recent weeks. On Wednesday, BTC ETFs recorded the tenth straight day of inflows, putting BTC ETF inflows in May at $6.2 billion, the second highest month on record and only slightly below the record $6.49 billion of inflows in November. BTC & Gold ETF Divergence Over the past 5 weeks, BTC ETFs have recorded $9 billion in inflows. This is in sharp contrast to Gold ETFs (NYSE:), which have recorded $2.8 billion in outflows across the same *******. This divergence comes as Gold has fallen away from its $3500 record high amid easing trade tensions, which has lowered demand for traditional havens. Meanwhile, Bitcoin’s status as an alternative store of value is growing at the same time that worries over the US budget deficit and fiscal position mount. There is growing acceptance of Bitcoin as a hedge, not a risk asset. Over the past month, Bitcoin’s correlation with the tech-heavy , the , and has been low, supporting the view that the cryptocurrency is viewed as a hedge. While Gold is still the better performer across 2025 year to date, up 25% compared to Bitcoin’s 15%, the picture is vastly different over the past month, with BTC up 15% compared to Gold’s 0.4% rise, or even the past two months, with BTC up 30% compared to Gold’s 5% gains, which suggests that the tide could be turning and new trends forming. Seasonality Is Unsupportive in June Persistent ETF demand, the macro backdrop, and regulatory developments support BTC booking further gains. However, seasonality is less favourable. June is typically the second-worst month for BTC performance. Bitcoin Technical Analysis The price is consolidating below 110k in a tight range around 107k to 109k. However, it remains in a rising channel dating back to the start of April, favoring the bulls. A rise above 110k could extend the rally towards the 120k psychological level. Sellers could be encouraged by the loss of momentum as the price tests the lower bounds of the rising channel. A break below here could open the door to 105k support and 100k. 2 Factors Why Stocks Could Gain Today 2 Factors Why Stocks Could Gain Today US stock futures surged in premarket trading on Thursday, May 29, 2025, driven by two major developments: a federal court’s blocking of Trump’s sweeping global tariffs and Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:) stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings despite export control challenges. These positive catalysts are fueling investor optimism about economic stability and continued AI sector growth. Federal Court Delivers Major Blow to Trump’s Tariff Strategy A US federal court has blocked President Donald Trump’s sweeping global trade tariffs, delivering a major setback to a key component of his economic policies. The Court of International Trade ruled that an emergency law invoked by the White House did not give the president unilateral authority to impose tariffs on nearly every country in the world. The New York-based court determined that the US Constitution gave Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other nations, and that this authority was not superseded by the president’s remit to safeguard the economy. The ruling was based on two separate cases brought by the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Center on behalf of several small businesses that import goods, and a coalition of US state governments challenging the import taxes. A three-judge panel ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a 1977 law that Trump cited to justify the tariffs, did not provide him the power to impose the sweeping import taxes. The court also blocked a separate set of levies the Trump administration imposed on China, Mexico, and Canada in response to what the administration characterized as unacceptable flows of drugs and ******** immigrants into the US. The Trump administration announced it would appeal within minutes of the ruling, with White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai stating, “It is not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency.” However, New York Attorney General Letitia James, representing one of 12 states involved in the lawsuit, welcomed the decision, emphasizing that “no president has the power to single-handedly raise taxes whenever they like.” Market Benefits from Tariff Ruling and Economic Stability The court’s decision provides significant relief for businesses and consumers who faced the prospect of substantial price increases due to Trump’s tariff regime. The ruling blocked Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, which included a 10% baseline tariff on most countries and steeper reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations and blocs, including the EU, ***, Canada, Mexico, and China. Global markets responded positively to the ruling, with stock markets in Asia rising Thursday morning and US stock futures jumping significantly. The US dollar made gains against safe-haven peers, including the Japanese yen and Swiss franc, reflecting investor confidence in economic stability. Market analysts viewed the decision as removing a significant source of uncertainty that had been weighing on investor sentiment. The White House has 10 days to complete the bureaucratic process of halting the tariffs, although most are currently suspended anyway. If all courts uphold the ruling through the appeals process, businesses that have paid tariffs will receive refunds on amounts paid, with interest. This includes the so-called reciprocal tariffs, which were lowered to 10% across the board for most countries and raised to 145% on ******** products, now at 30%. Nvidia Delivers Strong Results Despite Export Control Headwinds Nvidia posted strong quarterly earnings on Wednesday, beating Wall Street’s expectations despite new export controls imposed by the Trump administration limiting the ***** of some advanced chips to China. The powerhouse chipmaker, central to the artificial intelligence *****, saw quarterly revenue grow 69% year-over-year, increasing from $26 billion in the first quarter of 2024 to $44 billion in the first quarter of 2025. The company’s data center business, which drives much of its AI-related revenue, saw revenue rise 73% over the same *******, growing from $22.6 billion to $39.1 billion, although it fell just short of market forecasts for the segment. Despite this slight miss, the overall performance demonstrated Nvidia’s resilience in the face of regulatory challenges. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the strength of global AI demand, stating, “Global demand for NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure is incredibly strong. AI inference token generation has surged tenfold in just one year, and as AI agents become mainstream, the demand for AI computing will accelerate.” He added that “countries around the world are recognizing AI as essential infrastructure — just like electricity and the internet — and NVIDIA stands at the center of this profound transformation.” The company faced a $4.5 billion charge in the first quarter due to new restrictions that blocked the chipmaker from exporting its H20 graphics processing units to China. As a result, earnings per share came in below expectations at $0.81, which Nvidia attributed to the impact of export controls. Without the additional charge and related tax impacts, Nvidia indicated its earnings per share would have surpassed forecasts at $0.96, highlighting the underlying strength of the business. Robust Premarket Performance Across Major Indices US stock futures showed strong gains across all major indices as of 6:05 AM EDT on Thursday, May 29, 2025, reflecting investor enthusiasm for both the tariff ruling and Nvidia’s earnings performance. jumped 309.3 points to 42,470, representing a significant 500-point gain from the previous close and indicating a strong market opening. rose 78.2 points to 5,979.75, while gained 395.83 points to 21,767, demonstrating broad-based optimism across growth and technology sectors. The also participated in the rally, gaining 27.1 points to 2,099.9, suggesting small-cap stocks were also benefiting from the positive sentiment. Asian markets provided additional confirmation of global investor confidence, with the rising 1.35% to 23,573.38 and Japan’s gaining 1.88% to 38,432.98. European markets also showed positive momentum, with Germany’s rising 0.43% and France’s gaining 0.69%, indicating sustained international optimism about the developments. The volatility index declined 2.59% to 18.81, reflecting reduced market anxiety and increased investor confidence. Commodity markets also responded positively, with rising 1.47% to $62.75 per barrel, while declined slightly by 0.35% to $3,283.30 per ounce as investors moved away from safe-haven assets toward riskier investments. Technology Sector Leadership and Future Outlook The technology sector is poised to lead Thursday’s market gains, with Nvidia’s strong earnings performance likely to benefit other AI and semiconductor companies. The combination of reduced tariff uncertainty and continued AI sector strength creates a favorable environment for technology stocks, which have been under pressure from both trade tensions and regulatory concerns. Nvidia’s ability to deliver strong results despite facing $4.5 billion in export control-related charges demonstrates the underlying strength of AI demand globally. The company expects another $8 billion loss in the second quarter from chip restrictions, but the robust underlying business performance suggests the sector’s long-term growth trajectory remains intact. The court’s tariff ruling removes a significant overhang that had been weighing on multinational technology companies, many of which rely on global supply chains and international sales. The decision provides clarity and reduces the risk of escalating trade tensions that could disrupt technology sector operations and profitability. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. Why are disposable vapes being banned and how harmful is vaping? Why are disposable vapes being banned and how harmful is vaping? Peter Dazeley/ Getty Creative Disposable vapes have been found to damage the environment From Sunday, it will be ******** for businesses to sell or supply disposable vapes. The government hopes the ban will reduce environmental damage caused by the devices and help cut the number of children and young people vaping. How are the rules about vapes changing? Disposable vapes ban From 1 June 2025, businesses will be banned from selling or supplying any single-use vapes, whether that’s in shops or online. Retailers caught breaking the law in England face a minimum £200 fine, with a prison sentence of up to two years for repeat offences. Penalties are broadly similar in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Trading Standards will be able to seize any single-use vapes they find. Only devices considered to be reusable will be legal. That means that they must have a rechargeable battery, a replaceable coil, and be refillable. It won’t be ******** to own a disposable vape after 1 June. Customers can still return them, and retailers have an obligation to get rid of them. Vaping tax Vaping products are already subject to 20% VAT but, unlike tobacco, they do not currently attract a separate additional tax. A new vaping duty will start on 1 October 2026. It will be charged at a flat rate of £2.20 per 10ml vaping liquid. At the same time, tobacco duty will be increased to preserve the financial incentive for ********** smokers to switch to vaping. Advertising and sponsorship ban The government’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill – which is currently making its way through Parliament – will outlaw vape advertising and sponsorship. It will also restrict the flavours, packaging and display of vapes and other nicotine products. Children have been targeted with colours, branding and flavours such as bubble gum or candy floss, to push a product that can lead to nicotine addiction, the British Medical Association has warned. ******** vapes The government is also cracking down on iIlegal vapes, which are widely available and are much more likely to contain other harmful chemicals or drugs. More than six million ******** vaping products were seized by Trading Standards officers across England between 2022 and 2024, according to analysis by the BBC. Why are disposable vapes so bad for the environment? The ban on disposable vapes was introduced to tackle their impact on the environment. Almost five million single-use vapes were thrown away each week in 2023, according to the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). As well as lithium-ion batteries, vapes also contain circuit boards. If these aren’t not disposed of properly, they can leak toxic compounds such as cobalt and copper. That means fish, and marine mammals could mistake vapes for food and ingest poisonous chemicals. The Local Government Association (LGA), also says that single-use vapes are “a hazard for waste and litter collection and cause fires in bin lorries“. However, recycling disposable vapes is not straightforward because of their size and the way they are manufactured, which makes them difficult to take apart. These minerals and the lithium could – if recovered – be reused for green technologies such as electric car batteries or in wind turbines. There is currently no large-scale disposable vape recycling in the ***. There are so many different types of vape on the market that it is difficult to develop a standard recycling process. How many children and adults vape? Around 18% of 11 to 17-year-olds (980,000 children) have tried vaping, according to a 2024 survey by health charity ASH (Action on Smoking and Health). About 7% (390,000 children) said they currently vaped, down from 8% in 2023, but still well above the 4% figure recorded in 2020. In contrast, just over 5% of 11 to 17-year-olds (280,000 children) said they currently smoked, while just under 3% (150,000 children) said they both smoked and vaped. Among all age groups over 16, the use of vapes has risen, with about 5.1 million people using a vape or e-********** in 2023. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says 5.9% of people aged 16 and over vaped every day, up slightly from the previous year, while another 3.9% did so occasionally. The group with the highest rate of vape use – nearly 16% – was 16-24 year-olds. Getty The NHS says vaping should only be for adults quitting smoking How harmful are vapes to children and adults? Vaping is nowhere near as harmful as smoking cigarettes, which contain tobacco, tar and a range of other toxic *******-causing chemicals, and is one of the largest preventable causes of illness and death in the ***. But because vaping may itself cause long-term damage to lungs, hearts and brains, it is only recommended for adult smokers trying to quit as part of the NHS “swap to stop” programme. The vapour inhaled contains a small amount of chemicals, often including the addictive substance nicotine. “Vapes can be an effective way for adult smokers to quit – but we have always been clear that children and adult non-smokers should never vape,” the Department of Health and Social Care has said. More research is needed to fully understand the effects of vaping, but in December 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned “alarming evidence” was growing about the damage it causes. In February 2025, the government said a £62m research project would track 100,000 eight to 18-year-olds for a decade to better understand the risks. Intel’s next-gen Nova Lake CPUs may be backwards compatible with Arrow Lake coolers — LGA1954 and LGA1851 sockets share the same dimensions Intel’s next-gen Nova Lake CPUs may be backwards compatible with Arrow Lake coolers — LGA1954 and LGA1851 sockets share the same dimensions Intel’s upcoming LGA1954 socket for next-generation Nova Lake CPUs is rumored to match its predecessor’s size and may retain cooler compatibility. Ruby_Rapids on X highlighted NBD shipping manifests detailing the socket dimensions of LGA1954. At 45mm x 37.5mm, the size remains largely unchanged, despite offering roughly 100 more pins than LGA1851. However, full compatibility is still up in the air due to potential hotspot shifts with Nova Lake, depending on how and where Intel designs the cores. Intel’s current Arrow Lake processors utilize the LGA1851 socket, which was originally designed to support the now-axed Meteor Lake-S family on desktop. Though there are whispers of a potential Arrow Lake Refresh up in the air, it is expected to mirror Raptor Lake Refresh with improved silicon, higher clock speeds, and potentially more cache. In essence, the next major desktop release from Intel should be Nova Lake, which has officially been slated for a 2026 launch. If rumors hold true, these CPUs will use the LGA1954 socket, necessitating a new motherboard, which is a bummer if you’ve already invested a lot in the current platform. That being said, you may be able to keep your current cooler. Shipping data from NBD indicates the LGA1954 socket measures 45mm x 37.5mm, matching the size of LGA1851 and even LGA1700. This at least hints at mechanical compatibility for the CPU cooler. You may like Another Socket V series member:The package size of FCLGA1954 is 45×37.5, too.Today‘s coolers are mechanically compatible with Nova Lake-S. pic.twitter.com/BYJIwg0ANuMay 29, 2025 Here, with identical socket dimensions, we can infer a similar cooler mounting pattern. This was previously seen with LGA1156 (Nehalem/Westmere) all the way up to LGA1200 (Comet Lake/Rocket Lake), which could share the same CPU cooler due to a consistent mounting pattern (75mm x 75mm holes) throughout. Naturally, you’d need to confirm if your CPU cooler can dissipate the heat Nova Lake produces, though we don’t expect it to exceed Arrow Lake in this regard. Mechanical compatibility also does not guarantee full thermal compatibility. With the switch to a chiplet-based architecture, Intel has the flexibility to alter the placement of the Compute Tile on the interposer, or even change the positions of the P-cores and E-cores within the tile itself. For example, both core types were arranged in distinct blocks with Meteor Lake. However, Intel shifted to an interspersed layout with Arrow Lake, which directly affects thermal hotspots. All things considered, we’ll need to wait for official confirmation from Intel. Follow Tom’s Hardware on Google News to get our up-to-date news, analysis, and reviews in your feeds. EA Cancels ****** Panther Game And Closes Its Developer, Cliffhanger Games EA Cancels ****** Panther Game And Closes Its Developer, Cliffhanger Games EA has shuttered Cliffhanger Games and canceled the team’s upcoming ****** Panther game. This marks the third round of layoffs at the publisher this year. ****** Panther was first announced to be in development in July 2023 as part of a three-game partnership between EA and Marvel. The first game revealed for that initiative is an upcoming Iron Man title developed by Motive Studios, the team behind the 2023 Dead Space remake and Star Wars Squadrons. ****** Panther was the second title; the third game has yet to be announced. EA formed the Seattle-based Cliffhanger Games to develop ****** Panther. At the time of its reveal, ****** Panther was very early in development; Cliffhanger was still hiring staff. Because of this, we know very little about what the game would have been beyond what Cliffhanger described at the time as a “single-player story-driven third-person action-adventure game.” It also would have been the character’s first solo starring role in a video game, having previously appeared in supporting roles. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Cliffhanger was led by Kevin Stephens, formerly of Monolith Productions. Cliffhanger’s staff also partly consisted of former Monolith talent who worked on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Monolith Productions was shut down by Warner Bros. in February and had its own superhero game, Wonder Woman, canceled. IGN reports that Cliffhanger’s staff were informed of the shutdown via an email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele. She explained that the closure was part of EA’s larger goal to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities” as the publisher aims to focus on developing a small batch of franchises: Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, and Skate. Despite this initiative, Miele’s email also states that Motive’s Iron Man, Respawn’s third Star Wars Jedi game, and BioWare’s next Mass Effect title will remain in production. EA Sports, which is a separate division from EA Entertainment, is also said to be unaffected by today’s events. Employees working in EA’s mobile and central teams were also impacted. Miele states EA will work to find new positions for affected employees in other parts of the company. It is unclear exactly how many employees have lost their jobs, though IGN believes the number is less than 300. This news follows the round of layoffs that hit the publisher last April, which included 100 employees at Respawn Entertainment. This resulted in the cancellation of incubation projects that included a Titanfall title. BioWare also saw layoffs in January due to a restructuring aimed at focusing all resources on developing the next Mass Effect. In February 2024, EA laid off over 650 employees and canceled an upcoming Star Wars first-person shooter by Respawn. That particular round of layoffs saw CEO Andrew Wilson state that the publisher was “moving away from the development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry.” ****** Panther fans now only have Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra to look forward to. Developed by Skydance New Media and led by former Uncharted creative lead Amy Hennig, it stars Captain America and ****** Panther Azzuri, the grandfather of T’Challa, alongside a soldier and a Wakandan spy, battling Hydra during World War II. That title was recently delayed to 2026. Source link #Cancels #****** #Panther #Game #Closes #Developer #Cliffhanger #Games Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Elden Ring Nightreign’s Launch Trailer Summons The Power Of Evanescence Elden Ring Nightreign’s Launch Trailer Summons The Power Of Evanescence We’re just one day away from the launch of Elden Ring Nightreign, From Software’s three-player co-op action game that reimagines Elden Ring as a roguelite to great success. Ahead of its launch, publisher Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for the game that is a must-watch (probably not for a reason you can guess). Titled “Bring Me To Life Trailer,” this Nightreign trailer utilizes Evanescence’s popular song, “Bring Me To Life,” to great effect to create something that’s more like an AMV (anime music video) or something you’d see on VH1 or MTV in the early 2000s. Perhaps it’s because I’m a millennial (born in 1995, so just barely), but this trailer just feels right. You can check it out for yourself below: If you’ve been watching Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal on HBO after The Last of Us finishes up on Sunday nights, you might have already had “Bring Me To Life” on your mind for reasons I won’t spoil here – you should watch The Rehearsal if you aren’t already. While it was fun to imagine Fielder had something to do with this trailer’s existence, a Bandai Namco source confirmed that’s not the case. While waiting for the game to download, read Game Informer’s Elden Ring Nightreign review to find out why I gave the game an 8 out of 10. Are you picking up Nightreign tomorrow?
