Game apologises for cancelling Switch 2 pre-orders Game apologises for cancelling Switch 2 pre-orders *** high street chain Game has apologised after it cancelled some pre-orders of the hotly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Gamers have waited years for the Switch 2 – the successor to one of the best-selling consoles in history – with the new model being finally released to the public on 5 June. But some of those who pre-ordered the Switch 2 through Game will now not be able to get their hands on it on its release date. “We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order,” Game wrote in a post on social media. There has been a furious reaction from those affected, with one customer calling the situation “outrageous.” Game did not give any reason why the pre-orders were cancelled. The BBC has approached it for comment. In its social media post it says it is “currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible.” The Switch 2 has already attracted some controversy from fans who questioned the price of some of its games – with a boxed edition of Mario Kart World coming in at £74.99. But this price appears not to have impacted the initial sales of the hardware, with most retailers now unable to take on new pre-orders so close to its launch. Gamers who no longer have a pre-order may consider turning to the return of the midnight launch, which used to be part-and-parcel of game releases but has become far less common in recent years. At least one retailer has held back some stock in the hope of getting people through its doors – with Smyths promising a “limited” number of consoles will be available in-store when doors open on launch day. Fans scrambling to get their hands on new consoles has been a part of Nintendo’s history, for example with the Wii in 2006. The original Switch ended up becoming the fastest-selling console in history in the US when in launched in 2017. This is not just limited to Nintendo – its rival Sony’s PlayStation 5 proved to be such a hot ticket item that people joined virtual queues with thousands of others just to have the chance to buy one in 2020. This trend continued throughout the first three years of the console’s life, with the supply chain issues that partly fuelled the demand only being resolved in 2023. Nintendo Switch Mobile App Updated With GameChat And Other Switch 2 Features Nintendo Switch Mobile App Updated With GameChat And Other Switch 2 Features The Nintendo Switch 2 launch is now one week away, and Nintendo is gearing up for what it hopes to be another successful chapter in the company’s long history. The most recent update comes from the official Nintendo Switch mobile app, which has added functionality for new key features that line up with the next Nintendo Switch console. As spotted by Wario64 on X, the Nintendo Switch app update includes the ability to automatically receive screenshots and videos captured on the Switch 2, with a limit of 100 files stored for a maximum of 30 days. The app will also let players invite friends to the new GameChat feature, view those friends’ play history, and add new friends via friend code or QR code right from the app. Nintendo Switch 2 The app update comes on the heels of multiple videos surfacing with unboxings and menu walkthroughs of the Switch 2, suggesting that some players may have acquired their consoles prematurely. While Nintendo has not commented on these videos–which, as of this writing, have been removed from YouTube–it has made an attempt to combat scalpers through a partnership with online “flea market” sites. The Switch 2 will feature a launch lineup of 20 games, including Mario Kart World and updated Nintendo Switch 2 editions of both The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom. The console will also see Nintendo GameCube games come to the Nintendo Switch Online service exclusively on Switch 2, with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Soulcalibur 2 among the first games to be playable. Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in North America on June 5. Source link #Nintendo #Switch #Mobile #App #Updated #GameChat #Switch #Features Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Planning a wedding in Canada? Tariffs could blow your budget – National Planning a wedding in Canada? Tariffs could blow your budget – National A bouquet in hand, a photographer clicking away and glasses raised in celebration: for some ********* couples, these wedding day hallmarks may come with rising costs. And with wedding season in full swing, couples tying the knot this summer might need to brace for a steeper bill, thanks to tariffs. But of course, it depends on where you’re buying your wedding essentials. While the United States has slapped tariffs on Canada, the ones most likely to affect ********* couples are those targeting goods from U.S. manufacturers, whether it’s your dress, photography, flowers or decor, explained Shir Buslovich, owner and lead planner for WGM Weddings Co., a Toronto-based wedding and events company. The threat of tariffs has loomed since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, and while it can be hard to keep track of who’s taxing whom, one thing wedding experts like Buslovich agree on is this: their clients are worried. Story continues below advertisement Whether they’re getting married this summer or two years from now, there’s growing concern that wedding costs could skyrocket. 6:06 ********* alternatives to popular US bachelor and bachelorette destinations Many goods imported by U.S. companies from Canada and Mexico are now subject to a 25 per cent tariff, unless they meet specific rules under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade (CUSMA). Most imports to the U.S. from China face a 30 per cent tariff as of May 12, a significant drop from a previous high of 145 per cent. Meanwhile, a universal 10 per cent tariff — at least — applies to most goods coming into the U.S. from other global trade partners. These tariffs mean U.S. companies are now paying more for products made in China and many places around the world, and those added costs are starting to trickle down to ********* consumers. Story continues below advertisement “We all thought that this was going to be just a U.S. problem, but really, it does affect us here in Canada,” Buslovich said. “It’s with the items coming from the U.S. (that vendors use).” Since the tariffs took effect in April, Buslovich said she’s seen prices for some wedding products — especially décor and flowers — spike by nearly 50 per cent. Get weekly money news Get expert insights, Q&A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday. “The price of goods is definitely increasing, especially because the supply chain in the wedding industry here, a lot of our stuff comes from the U.S. and Colombia and Ecuador … like florals, for example. And so florals, décor, things like that, it’s just getting a lot pricier,” she said. “From my perspective as a planner, it means that things we usually take for granted, like centrepieces or floral varieties of some sort, are pretty expensive and they’re really hard to get now.” Story continues below advertisement Florals are one of the major wedding expenses she sees impacted by tariffs, since many kinds, like roses, carnations and tropical blooms, aren’t grown year-round in Canada. Some come from the U.S., while others are shipped internationally, often arriving in Miami before being distributed as refrigerated goods to wholesalers and retailers. However, Valary Chrisman, principal planner, co-ordinator and designer at the Toronto-based wedding company Vivid and Vogue, said she hasn’t seen a major impact from tariffs on florals just yet. 6:18 Top wedding trends of the season “In Ontario, we’re lucky to have a lot of local flower farms, along with a year-round greenhouse system,” she explained. “Those sources aren’t directly or indirectly affected by tariffs. Plus, many wholesalers in the Toronto area use a mix of flowers from Europe, which aren’t subject to tariffs and are flown directly into Canada.” Story continues below advertisement That said, she noted that some flowers, like eucalyptus, do come from the U.S. and could be affected by price increases. If that’s a concern, she recommends talking to your florist about removing them or finding a suitable substitute. And it’s not just flowers feeling the pinch. Décor items like linens, plates and cutlery are also getting hit, Buslovich said. “Anything that’s not locally sourced is pretty expensive right now,” she added. One of the biggest items that may be indirectly affected by the trade war, Chrisman said, is American alcohol. “Bourbon is a popular item that is exclusively produced in Kentucky and therefore not available. But I have seen some ********* clients responding in some really fun ways where they’ve had Manhattans made with ********* Club and it’s an old-fashioned, the ********* old-fashioned,” she said. Trending Now Hugh Jackman’s estranged wife files for divorce, speaks out on ‘betrayal’ Missing N.S. kids spotted day before disappearance, stepfather says he’s taken polygraph The wedding dress is often one of the biggest statement pieces of the entire day (that also comes with one of the biggest price tags). For ********* brides, it might come with an extra cost thanks to tariffs. Story continues below advertisement While local designers aren’t affected, those eyeing a gown from a U.S. label might want to take a second look, Chrisman said. Many of those dresses are made with materials sourced from overseas — places like China, which are currently subject to tariffs from the U.S., spurring many across-the-board price increases from companies. 5:32 Gorgeous bridal looks that won’t break the bank “For people who are planning for the next couple of years, I think it’s a good idea to budget additionally in case,” she said. “If these trade war conversations continue and if tariffs do become more impactful than they already are, that’s where I think dresses kind of fall into more of a future planning situation as opposed to an immediacy one.” Photography costs could rise For couples opting for film photography or vintage-style videography, tariffs could quietly drive up prices, though the impact isn’t immediate. Story continues below advertisement “The cost of film photography and film videography, like Super 8 as a medium, is going up in cost in general,” Chrisman said. “There used to be a really large number of facilities producing the medium of film that has shrunk as digital cameras became more prevalent.” While some Super 8 film is purchased from the U.S. and could be affected by tariffs, Chrisman said most photographers aren’t raising prices just yet: “It may be something where if tariffs continue to impact those specific instances, costs could go up in the future — but not necessarily photography as a whole.” Her advice? “Ask your vendors as you’re booking them if tariffs could affect film costs, and see if there’s anything in the contract about how that would be handled.” Because of the rising costs, Buslovich noticed many of her clients starting to simplify their weddings, opting for less “va va voom” and more minimalist celebrations. Story continues below advertisement Still, she emphasized that weddings can be beautiful no matter the budget. While tariffs are impacting venues, photographers and florists, she said there’s a silver lining: more couples are now turning to local businesses for their big day. “So if we support local and we continue to focus on our local talent and local products, showing their own creativity. That is the best way that we can continue feeling personal and authentic with local vendors and local décor, flowers, things like that,” she said. Turkey to fine airline passengers who stand up before plane stops Turkey to fine airline passengers who stand up before plane stops Airline passengers to Turkey will be fined if they stand up before the seatbelt sign turns off after landing, regulators have said. The Turkish civil aviation authority said it imposed the order after receiving complaints from passengers. The rules came into effect earlier this month. Turkish media reports say fines will be about about US$70 (£50), although no amount is mentioned in the authority’s guidance. The authority warned that there was a “serious increase” in such incidents, with many complaints about passengers grabbing overhead baggage before the plane has been parked. Turkey is a destination for tens of millions of tourists every year. The aviation authority said commercial airlines must now issue an in-flight announcement and report those who do not follow orders. Passengers must be told to keep their seatbelts locked, and refrain from standing and opening overhead lockers until the seatbelt sign is off. Those who do not follow these rules must be reported to the authority, it says. Turkish Airlines, the national carrier, has updated its landing announcement, according to Euronews. “Passengers who do not comply with the rules will be reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation through a Disruptive Passenger Report, and an administrative fine will be imposed in accordance with the applicable legal regulations,” the airline says upon landing, according to the TV network. The BBC has contacted the airline for comment. Prolific French paedophile’s sentence leaves victims appalled Prolific French paedophile’s sentence leaves victims appalled The victims of prolific French paedophile Joel Le Scouarnec have expressed their dismay that the former surgeon’s 20-year prison sentence does not include preventive detention – meaning he could be released from jail in the early 2030s. The 74-year-old was found guilty on Tuesday of ********* abusing hundreds of people, most of them underage patients of his, over decades. Over the course of the trial he had confessed to committing 111 rapes crimes and 188 ******* assaults, and was sentenced to the maximum of 20 years in jail. Prosecutors – who dubbed Le Scouarnec “a ****** in a white coat” – had asked the court to take the extremely rare provision to hold him in a centre for treatment and supervision even after release, called preventative detention. But the judge rejected this demand, arguing Le Scouarnec’s age and his “desire to make amends” had been taken into account. Le Scouarnec will have to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole. But because he has already served seven years due to a previous conviction for the ***** and ******* assault of four children, he may be eligible for parole by 2032. His lawyer, Maxime Tessier, pointed out that saying Le Scouarnec could be released then was “inaccurate”, as parole is not tantamout a release. But his victims – many of whom assiduously attended the three-month-long trial in Vannes, northern France – are lamenting the sentence. “For a robbery you risk 30 years. But the punishment for hundreds of child rapes is lighter?” one victim told Le Monde. The president of a child advocacy group, Solène Podevin Favre, said that she might have expected the verdict “to be less lenient” and to include a post-sentence preventative detention. “It’s the maximum sentence, certainly,” she said. “But it’s the least we could have hoped for. Yet in six years, he could potentially be released. It’s staggering.” Marie Grimaud, one of the lawyers representing the victims, told reporters that while she “intellectually” understood the verdict, “symbolically” she could not. Another lawyer, Francesca Satta, said that she felt 20 years was too short a time given the number of victims in the case. “It is time for the law to change so we can have more appropriate sentences,” she argued. But in her judgement read out to the court, Judge Aude Burési said that, while the court had “heard perfectly the demands from the plaintiffs that Le Scouarnec should never be released from jail, it would be demagogic and fanciful to let them believe that would be possible”. “In fact,” she added, “the rule of law does not allow for that to happen.” One of Le Scouarnec’s victims, Amélie Lévêque, said the verdict had “shocked” her and that she would have liked preventative detention to be imposed. “How many victims would it take? A thousand?” She argued that French law needed to change and allow for harsher sentences to take into account the serial nature of crimes. Similar complaints were raised in the aftermath of the Pelicot trial last December, in which Dominique Pelicot was found guilty of drugging and raping his wife, Gisèle, and recruited dozens of men to abuse her over almost a decade. Pelicot, too, was sentenced to 20 years – the maximum sentence for ***** in French law – with the obligation to serve a minimum of two-thirds in jail. His case, however, will have to be re-examined at the end of the prison sentence before the question of preventative detention can be explored. In France, sentences are not served consecutively. Public prosecutor Stéphane Kellenberger noted last week that had Le Scouarnec been on trial in the US – where people serve one prison sentence after another – he may have faced a sentence of over 4,000 years. But Cécile de Oliveira, one of the victims’ lawyers, praised the sentence, which she said had been “finely tailored” to Le Scouarnec’s “psychiatric condition”. She agreed with the court’s decision not to impose preventative detention on the former surgeon, adding: “It needs to remain an entirely exceptional punishment.” After the verdict was read out, victims, journalists and lawyers mingled outside the courthouse in Vannes. Many of the civil parties and their relatives, angered by the verdict, brought their frustration to the media. “All that I ask for is that this man cannot offend again,” the mother of a victim told French outlets. “If this kind of behaviour needs to entail a life sentence, so be it.” Source link #Prolific #French #paedophiles #sentence #leaves #victims #appalled Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Boxing: Tyson Fury retirement probably only a ‘pause’, says Josh Warrington Boxing: Tyson Fury retirement probably only a ‘pause’, says Josh Warrington It’s easy to say, “Why don’t you just walk away?” But unless you’ve lived it, you don’t understand. The structure of training, the routine, the high of fight week – it’s like a drug. I’ve never touched recreational stuff in my life but I imagine the hit of fight night is not far off. The lights, the adrenaline, the buzz – it’s addictive. And let’s not lie – the money matters. Boxing isn’t just a passion, it’s a business. One punch can change your life and the pay packets? Insane. You’ve got influencers making millions from novelty fights. So if you’re a top heavyweight like Fury, what’s 36 minutes in the ring when there’s eight figures on the line? But that’s where it gets dangerous. The damage adds up. You’re getting hit in the head. And what does all that money mean when your speech starts to slur or your reactions slow down? That’s why I say boxing needs a union. Footballers have the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association). We’ve got nothing. Most of us come from council estates and broken homes – boxing is a way out. But when it ends, the phone stops ringing. The tax bills roll in. You don’t know who to turn to. And that’s when some fighters spiral into drink, gambling or depression. Source link #Boxing #Tyson #Fury #retirement #pause #Josh #Warrington Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The War on DPS Insta-Lockers Rages on as Support/Vanguard Mains Claim They Lack ‘Critical Thinking’ The War on DPS Insta-Lockers Rages on as Support/Vanguard Mains Claim They Lack ‘Critical Thinking’ Marvel Rivals is filled with players who insta-lock DPS as soon as you load into a match, making it impossible for others to play the same role in the game. It’s a nightmare for Vanguards and Support since they often take the hit for the faults of Duelists. They can “GG no diff” their way out of losing matches, unlike tank and healer mains. Naturally, they waged a war against the DPS players, belittling them for their lack of teamwork, and can you blame them? DPS insta-lockers hardly understand the importance of Vanguards and Supports, let alone playing well with the Duelists. “Critical thinking” isn’t required on the resume for playing Duelists in Marvel Rivals At least, that’s what the Vanguard and Support mains are saying, and to some extent, it’s completely valid. Duelist insta-lockers would rather throw the match and go 2-9 with heroes like Spider-Man or Wolverine than switch to another role that would benefit the team. A user named FlondreBg on the Marvel Rivals subreddit detailed their experiences of having DPS insta-lockers in matches and losing the game, owing to their incompetence. Read through the frustrating experience yourself: The optimal team composition has always been two Duelists, two Vanguards, and two Supports, yet the DPS insta-lockers are hellbent on sticking to the role, even if the result of the match is at stake. Part of the reason why there was a Support strike not long ago. Numerous users agreed with the OP’s sentiment of Duelist insta-lockers lacking critical thinking skills, because who wouldn’t get frustrated trying to keep up with players refusing to switch because they’d rather play DPS and take the L than switch to Vanguards and Supports? Comment byu/FlondreBg from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/FlondreBg from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/FlondreBg from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/FlondreBg from discussion inmarvelrivals Suddenly, the idea of role-queueing in Marvel Rivals doesn’t sound so bad, does it? It’s only fair that tanks and healers also get a chance to play Duelists to avoid a monotone experience. At this point, other players would rather choose the role they want instead of the role they’re required to, even if it means losing the match if the DPS players don’t switch. That’s not even a bad strategy, because if players want to be rigid and stick to insta-locking Duelists, then the ones who’ll suffer the consequences should do the same, to even the odds. Here’s hoping the war dies down a bit with the arrival of Season 2.5 in Marvel Rivals, but who knows? You can’t have someone playing both Duelist and Support in a single match. But what if you could? Ultron will undoubtedly be insta-locked as soon as he drops on Marvel Rivals Ultron’s world domination begins! | Image Credit: NetEase Games Beware, DPS insta-lockers, Support players are getting their messiah to insta-lock on May 30th as Ultron is confirmed to be a hybrid character, taking on the role of both Duelist and healer. Looking at his abilities, we’d say he’s more of a Strategist than a healer, but a great addition to the growing roster of Marvel Rivals. Maybe the war on Duelist insta-lockers by Vanguards and Supports is about to get even worse, as DPS players will rush to insta-lock Ultron even though he’s a Strategist. Now, that’s a level of hypocrisy that can make General Shepherd’s betrayal look like child’s play. However, sometimes, insta-locking Duelists can prove to be the right move for the team, as some players excel with DPS heroes. An exception can be made for that, but one good apple doesn’t make a rotten basket edible. So, what do you think about the war on the DPS insta-lockers by Vanguard and Support mains in Marvel Rivals? Do you think the insta-lockers are justified in doing so, or are tank and healer mains right in calling out their inability to switch? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below. Sapphire 2025: BASF evolves business with move to SAP S/4Hana Sapphire 2025: BASF evolves business with move to SAP S/4Hana Chemical industry giant BASF is moving its SAP IT estate to the supplier’s S/4Hana enterprise resource planning (ERP) system as part of a business modernisation strategy, it was announced at its Sapphire user and partner conference in Madrid. Petra Scheithe, senior vice-president of digitalisation of services and ERP platforms at BASF Business Services, outlined the latest development in the company’s long-standing relationship with SAP. BASF, which employs around 112,000 people, has been an SAP customer for 40 years. Its headquarters in Ludwigshafen are a half-hour drive from SAP’s in Walldorf. According to a joint SAP/BASF statement, the chemical firm “adopted a hybrid system landscape to integrate SAP S/4Hana Cloud into BASF’s vast system and reduce the complexity of on-premise management. With a clean core strategy in place, any new customisations and functional extensions will be cloud-ready, allowing simplified system maintenance and operations in the long run.” BASF also intends to use SAP’s artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability software. The first of its new systems on S/4Hana, in its coatings business, is already live. BASF has four “core businesses”, in chemicals, materials, industrial solutions, and nutrition and care, and four standalone business units in agriculture and surface technologies, catalysts and metals, battery materials, and coatings. Petra Scheithe, senior vice-president of digitalization of services and ERP platforms for BASF Business Services BASF is also using SAP’s Joule copilot for initial use cases in SAP’s SuccessFactors HR system, and is looking at other cases for core business processes. “We signed a new strategic partnership with SAP in December 2024,” said Scheithe, in an interview at Sapphire. “This includes Rise [with SAP], which we did not have before.” Rise is a so-called business transformation as a service programme that is fundamentally about cloud migration, and getting customers, new and existing, onto a cloud-delivered version of its S/4Hana ERP system based on its in-memory database, Hana. BASF’s existing SAP estate is one single global instance. “That has brought some challenges with it because over the last decade, we have really grown that system to a point where we said ‘this is difficult to manage’,” said Scheithe. “We have a very broad product portfolio, from our agricultural business, our coatings business, catalysts, battery materials, and copper and metals,” she said. “Combining all of those requirements in one SAP system led to the point that we have more than 300,000 custom objects in the system, so it’s huge and monolithic. The transition to S/4Hana is a chance to clear that up.” The idea is to back up the BASF strategy, called Winning Ways, with a modernised ERP system. The overall corporate strategy has the goal of BASF being “the preferred chemical company to enable our customers’ green transformation”. It includes a €10bn investment in what the company calls a Verbund site in Zhanjiang in China. At these sites, production plants, energy and material flows, logistics, and site infrastructure are all integrated, according to the company. There are currently six worldwide. In relation to the SAP environment, Scheithe said they decided to split the one instance into several business-related ones. The new company strategy, minted in 2024, means there is a pillar dedicated to “differentiated steering with different market requirements”, she added. BASF started to build an S/4Hana instance in 2022 for the coatings business, with “a greenfield approach using clean core strategy”. This went live in March of this year, “on time and on budget, which I am super proud of”, said Scheithe. The firm is now implementing S/4 for the battery materials division and piloting for the agricultural business. “Clean core” in an SAP context means keeping the core system as standard as possible, with minimal custom modifications. They also opted for SAP’s Rise programme so that their systems are as close as possible to standard SAP and to leverage the IT supplier’s innovations in AI. Scheithe said she’s very interested to explore the use of the technology from SAP’s 2024 acquisition, WalkMe. This is a digital adoption platform technology that is increasingly associated with the use of SAP’s GenAI assistant, Joule. WalkMe sits on top of an organisation’s IT applications layer and determines where users might experience difficulties such as getting stuck when performing a process or task. WalkMe then provides guidance and automated processes that help the user complete the task. BASF is not using it as yet. It’s using Joule for HR tasks, in SuccessFactors, and Sheithe is especially interested in its use for developers. “We are not so naïve as to believe now that with implementing S/4 we will cover all our business requirements that we had in the past,” she said. “We have more than 300,000 custom objects in our system, and those were not done just because developers like to develop, but for business requirements. If we can’t get rid of those, we don’t want them in our core system, so it will be helpful if we have tools on hand that make our developers more efficient. This why I’m so excited about Joule for developers.” Thomas Saueressig, a member of the executive board of SAP for customer services and delivery, said: “We are proud to partner with BASF on this transformative journey. “By choosing SAP S/4Hana Cloud, BASF is laying a strong foundation for future growth and innovation,” he said. “The ability to leverage a clean core and standardised processes will provide BASF with the agility and resilience needed to thrive in today’s dynamic business environment.” Source link #Sapphire #BASF #evolves #business #move #SAP #S4Hana Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Here’s what to know about Trump’s tariffs after a U.S. trade court rules them ******** Here’s what to know about Trump’s tariffs after a U.S. trade court rules them ******** President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on goods imported from almost every foreign nation have been ruled ******** by the U.S. Court of International Trade, marking a setback for the president’s trade agenda — and adding another level of uncertainty for U.S. consumers and businesses. The Wednesday ruling from the court halted the tariffs Mr. Trump assessed on virtually every other country on April 2, a day he termed “Liberation Day.” Some trading partners faced substantially higher import duties, with the president hiking tariffs on China-produced goods to as high as 145% before easing them temporarily earlier this month. The ruling raises a host of questions about what happens next, given that Mr. Trump’s trade agenda hinges on wide-ranging tariffs that he has promised will help bring back U.S. manufacturing jobs while also raising trillions in new revenue for federal coffers. Meanwhile, the court decision will likely provide a measure of relief to American businesses and consumers, given that they’re typically on the hook for paying the tariffs when imports reach U.S. soil. But the ruling also introduces new layer of uncertainty. For one, the Trump administration said it intends to appeal the ruling to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Secondly, Mr. Trump could seek alternate routes to deploy additional tariffs, experts say. “At the moment, it is anyone’s guess as to whether these very unpopular tariffs will be reinstated on appeal or by the Supreme Court,” said Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics, in a May 29 research note. “So, uncertainty is now poised to escalate.” Here’s what to know about Mr. Trump’s tariffs following the ruling. Are any of Mr. Trump’s tariffs still in effect? Yes, the U.S. Court of International Trade’s ruling applies to the Trump administration’s tariffs that were issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. But the Trump administration has also levied additional import duties by tapping other trade rules, and those remain in effect. “The tariffs that remain in place are the Section 232 tariffs of 25% on automotive, steel and aluminum imports and the Section 301 tariffs on China that were imposed during President Trump’s first term and expanded under the Biden administration,” analysts at research company Capital Economics noted in a May 29 note. The president cited the IEEPA to announce the so-called reciprocal tariffs on April 2. At the time of the announcement, Mr. Trump said that trade deficits with other nations represented “a national emergency.” But the court on Wednesday ruled that Mr. Trump’s global tariffs aren’t authorized by the IEEPA, and said it would be unconstitutional for any law passed by Congress to give the president blanket authority to set tariffs. “The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder,” the judges wrote Wednesday. Could Mr. Trump reinstate the tariffs? Mr. Trump could reinstate the tariffs if he wins on appeal, but his administration could also seek other routes to reimpose the import duties, according to Goldman Sachs economists. For instance, the president could use Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose tariffs of up to 15%, but they would be limited to 150 days, according to Goldman Sachs. A section of the Trade Act of 1930 would allow the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports from nations that discriminate against the U.S., they added. “Section 232 tariffs, which President Trump has already used for steel, aluminum and autos, could be broadened to cover other sectors,” they noted. What does this mean for U.S. businesses and consumers? Until the appeal is resolved, there will be some added level of uncertainty for U.S. businesses, which are on the hook for paying the tariffs when imported goods reach U.S. ports, some economists said on Thursday. Most or all of the tariffs are passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices, economists say, which has prompted them to forecast higher inflation in 2025. But given that some of Mr. Trump’s other tariffs remain in place, U.S. businesses are still on the hook for those additional import duties. That means that while the effective tariff rate is now lower, it’s still significantly higher than it was prior to the current Trump administration. “We calculate that the effective tariff rate is now 6.5%, up from 2.5% at the start of the year but far lower than the 15% rate based on our assumption of the IEEPA-related tariffs remaining in place,” noted Capital Economics. Even so, U.S. investors cheered the ruling, signaling relief from Wall Street that the overhang from the tariffs has been removed, albeit perhaps temporarily. The tariffs had raised the risks of a recession and were expected to boost inflation this year, economists had forecast. After Selling Nvidia, Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller Unloaded Another One of Wall Street’s Hottest Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks. Is It Time For You to Do the Same? After Selling Nvidia, Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller Unloaded Another One of Wall Street’s Hottest Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks. Is It Time For You to Do the Same? The billionaire fund manager turned heads when he dumped Nvidia even as peers couldn’t stop buying it. While he has since called that decision a “big mistake,” he just sold yet another scorching hot AI darling. This time Druckenmiller may be right, as valuation trends in the AI realm are becoming harder to justify. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › Stanley Druckenmiller is a billionaire investor who manages capital at his fund, the Duquesne Family Office. Over the past few years, he has made some eyebrow-raising moves related to investing in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks. Perhaps the biggest head-scratcher was his selling Nvidia stock when everyone else seemed to be buying. In fairness, though, Druckenmiller has since expressed some regret about exiting his Nvidia position. While Nvidia has been one of the largest beneficiaries of a bullish AI narrative, it’s far from the only growth stock out there. Ironically, however, Druckenmiller just dumped his fund’s entire stake in yet another scorching hot AI stock. Will Druckenmiller come to regret this decision, too? I don’t think so. Read on to find out which AI darling the Duquesne Family Office just exited, and learn why I think this was a savvy decision. According to its most recent 13F filing, the Duquesne Family Office has completely exited its position in Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR). In the table below, I’ve summarized Druckenmiller’s exposure to Palantir stock over the last year. Category Q1 2024 Q2 2024 Q3 2024 Q4 2024 Q1 2025 Shares 769,965 769,965 41,710 41,710 0 Data source: 13f.info. Per the data above, it appears that the majority of Duquesne’s exposure to Palantir was trimmed in the middle of last year. Over the last six months, Druckenmiller’s fund held a small position in Palantir stock — enjoying record gains as the company remained one of the best-performing stocks across the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 indices. It begs the question: Why sell now? Image source: Getty Images. Since going public in 2020, Palantir stock has gained well over 1,000%. That’s an unusually high return in this short a time duration. However, looking at Palantir’s parabolic rise through this lens is a bit misleading. The reason I say that is because the majority of gains in the stock have actually occurred over the last 18 months. When you look at it that way, it becomes even more questionable just how much further the stock can run right now. Story Continues PLTR PS Ratio data by YCharts. In the graph above, I’ve benchmarked Palantir’s valuation against a peer set of high-growth software stocks on a price-to-sales (P/S) basis. Not only is Palantir the obvious outlier here, but just look at how much expansion its valuation multiples have experienced over the last year relative to its peers. As of the closing bell on May 23, Palantir boasted a market capitalization of $291 billion — considerably more than Salesforce (which I predicted would happen), despite being a much smaller, less diversified, and less profitable business. In my eyes, Druckenmiller isn’t going to roll the dice on any more momentum fueling Palantir. I think he decided to take his gains and redeploy capital into more appropriately valued businesses. One of the secrets to investing is that there is never really a perfect time to sell a stock. What I would point out about Palantir’s valuation right now is that its P/S multiple is more than double the levels that Amazon and Cisco peaked at during the dot-com bubble, and considerably higher than where Nvidia reached throughout the AI revolution. I bring this up because as sobering as it may be to realize, even the hottest growth stocks experience pullbacks from time to time. As Palantir stock continues to rocket higher, I suspect expectations will rise around its quarterly earnings results. This presents a risk in that Palantir could deliver a monster earnings report, but ultimately fail to live up to unjustifiably lofty expectations — hence, the stock could drop off a cliff instantly. While I remain a long-term bull, I wouldn’t blame investors who trim their Palantir positions right now. One prudent approach could be to sell enough to at least recoup your initial investment. Another strategy could be to collect some gains if you’re up by 15% or more on your position (essentially double the long-run average annual return of the S&P 500). Before you buy stock in Palantir Technologies, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Palantir Technologies wasn’t one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years. Phasmophobia Update Gives Players New Ghosthunting Tools Phasmophobia Update Gives Players New Ghosthunting Tools The word phasmophobia describes a fear of ghosts, but perhaps it’s the spirits who should be afraid after Phasmophobia’s next update. Kinetic Games has announced that the new Phasmophobia update, Chronicle, will arrive next month, and it will give players some upgraded tools for their ghosthunting endeavors. Chronicle is adding the ability to record and collect sound evidence of ghosts with an upgradable sound recorder that can detect hidden layers of audio from ghostly events that might otherwise go unnoticed. The update is also overhauling the game’s evidence presentation, which will be reorganized into a media tab with three subsections–photos, videos, and sound recordings. Players will be able to log in the different pieces of evidence they collect to complete their investigations. One of the locations from Phasmophobia. In addition to the revamped evidence collection, Chronicle will add a new reward system. The first time players collect evidence of any kind will be given extra cash and XP rewards following the conclusion of each contact. Any duplicate evidence collected by players will get smaller rewards, while bonuses will be tied to the equipment used to capture them. Phasmophobia’s latest update is also introducing a more refined leveling and progression system, a new main menu, and eliminating some bugs from the game. Kinetic Games notes that an overhaul of Phasmophobia’s Grafton Farmhouse will be added later this year. The new Grafton Farmhouse will feature redesigned layouts, enhanced visuals, re-themed rooms, and a “haunting new attic.” Kinetic Games will release Phasmophobia’s Chronicle update on June 24. Elon Musk & DOGE, HP, Foot Locker: Trending Tickers Elon Musk & DOGE, HP, Foot Locker: Trending Tickers 00:00:03 Speaker A Now time for some of today’s trending tickers. We are watching Tesla, HP, and Foot Locker. First up, Tesla, Elon Musk gearing up to leave Doge and return to his businesses. Musk signaled on Wednesday that his time leading Doge was at an end. In a post on X, the social platform he owns, the world’s richest person thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce quote wasteful spending, adding that Doge’s mission will only strengthen over time. Shares of Tesla are pushing higher here today by about two and a half percent. Uh, a lot of people will know that as a special government employee, he is only allowed to actually work a federal job for 130 days each year, which essentially would come to an end this week. 00:00:57 Speaker B I thought it was really interesting to see sort of the capitulation from Elon Musk after the market reacted as they did. And this is why I personally love what we get to do every day with monitoring markets cuz it has a huge impact. It can impact who is, you know, feeding information to the president of the United States. So it’s interesting to see that the reaction in Tesla perhaps was something that was on his mind when he did pull back from his role in the government. 00:01:29 Speaker A It better be on his mind. The shares were sinking. They were losing any type of sentiment that ultimately was annexed to how successful or unsuccessful the White House was at communicating their strategy, which controversial at best. And Elon Musk putting his mug next to that, essentially also impacts all of the businesses that you run as well, for better or for worse, as he was trying to get government contracts with some of those businesses. And then for Tesla, which is far more consumer facing, you rely on still having the favorability of purchases. Oh yeah, at a time where in the consumer confidence readings, there were more pushbacks, at least in that interim ******* of time, of people putting off some of those big ticket purchases, including an electric vehicle. 00:02:46 Speaker B And you saw that in the global sales data as well. Absolutely. All right, next up, let’s talk about HP sinking this morning. The company’s profit outlook fell short of estimates, and it cut the annual earnings forecast as well, pointing toward a weaker economy and continuing costs from US tariffs on goods from China. What’s fascinating about a name like this is that this morning we have the news of that ruling from a US court calling on the president’s tariffs to be repealed, and potentially as Alexis Keen was telling us that some countries would even have to get paid back for the tariffs that they have already been charged. Having said that, for HP, the problem is that profit outlook getting cut, whether or not the tariffs stay, that is something that is clearly negatively impacting stock price down over 11%. 00:03:59 Speaker A Yeah, spot on. Uh, second quarter net revenue, it was actually up 3.3% from the prior year ******* here. Uh, and then additionally thinking through what the company was saying, and they had to acknowledge around some of the increased macroeconomic uncertainty. They’ve adjusted their outlook to reflect moderated demand and the net impact of trade related costs to your point, and they’re executing targeted mitigation strategies as well, assuming current conditions remain. They expect to fully offset those costs by the fourth quarter of their fiscal year. Shares though, down by about 11, 12%. Finally here, let’s go where the feet go. Foot Locker, the company out with earnings and missing sales estimates. The miss comes as the parent company prepares to be acquired by retail giant *****’s Sporting Goods for $2.4 billion. Shares of Foot Locker flat, just barely to the upside. Uh, one of the things that is always interesting for me to track is where they are on their store footprint. And one of the things that I was circling within my own notes here is that they actually just continue to close more stores than they are opening. They’re also going through this process of remodeling and bringing more stores essentially up to snuff with their own expectations. Uh, and so the exact numbers on that. Oh, and the regions that impacts as well. Company opened nine new stores, closed 56 stores including stores operating in South Korea, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Romania. You will get less of those exclusive drops. And then additionally here, remodeled or relocated 11 stores, refreshed 69 stores here. Uh, and it’ll be interesting to see where they have more weight to potentially throw around once the deal is consummated with *****’s Sporting Goods, uh, with major brands like Nike, like Adidas, to make sure that they get priority selection in some of that inventory going to retail partners. 00:06:16 Speaker B I think one of the things that’s really interesting here too from an economy perspective is something that Sujarita Kodali had called out to both of us last week. The idea that you see evidence within this print of wholesalers getting access to more inventory, a little bit of that pull forward dynamic happening here as they anticipated these tariffs, which again, as we have headlines coming in today, unclear what those tariffs are going to look like more long term, but we still have that impacting a print like this where you do have a little bit of that pull forward dynamic going on. And then the questions about what that’s going to look like for their sales going forward if they’ve already missed on estimates this quarter. 00:07:03 Speaker A I was part of the numbers in this quarter. I’ll admit it. Uh, I saw some flu game Jordans at Foot Locker in Harold Square. I said, you know what? Take the money. 00:07:16 Speaker B He’s a consumer too, you know. We’re all people. Review – Maniac (Nintendo Switch) | WayTooManyGames Review – Maniac (Nintendo Switch) | WayTooManyGames WTMG’s Oliver Shellding: “I feel that Maniac sets out to do what it intends to do very well: it’s chaotic, it’s dynamic, and I admit it runs pretty well on the Switch, a console now infamous for slowdowns and stutters when on screen action becomes too much. It’s a fun little experience, but, without achievements or anything beyond the surface to strive for, you can get bored fairly quickly. Having said that, it’s a good budget title for anyone with a soft spot for 90s mayhem, and it never professes to be anything it isn’t. It’s just a shame: it seems I’ve grown older, and the genre hasn’t aged with me. How bittersweet.” Source link #Review #Maniac #Nintendo #Switch #WayTooManyGames Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Brendan Mcdermid | Reuters The New York Times on Thursday struck a deal with Amazon allowing it to use the storied news organization’s content across its artificial intelligence platforms. The multi-year deal “will bring Times editorial content to a variety of Amazon customer experiences,” the Times said in a release. The agreement also includes content from the newspaper’s other properties like NYT Cooking and The Athletic. “This will include real-time display of summaries and short excerpts of Times content within Amazon products and services, such as Alexa, and training Amazon’s proprietary foundation models,” the Times said. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Read more CNBC Amazon coverage The Times sued Microsoft and OpenAI in 2023 for copyright infringement, accusing the companies of abusing the newspaper’s intellectual property to train large language models. Both Microsoft and OpenAI sought unsuccessfully to have the case thrown out. Microsoft Introduces Windows Update Orchestration Platform to Deliver Third-Party App Updates Microsoft Introduces Windows Update Orchestration Platform to Deliver Third-Party App Updates Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it is opening Windows Update to third-party apps. The Redmond-based tech giant has introduced a new Windows Update orchestration platform, which allows third-party app developers to deliver updates in unison with Windows updates. The company says the new platform offers several benefits for developers, including app update notifications via native Windows notifications, updating apps based on user activity to avoid CPU and bandwidth spikes, and saving on costs that were spent on independent installer mechanisms. Developers Can Now Deliver App Updates Alongside Windows Updates In a blog post, Microsoft says that most third-party apps handle updates independently using self-created mechanisms. They not only handle the package installer, but also support troubleshooting requirements, update notifications, all while ensuring the updates arrive at a time when the user activity is not too high. The firms says it wants to change this fragmented experience into a unified update practice. The firm says that the Windows Update orchestration platform would require the third-party app developers to register with the orchestrator as an update provider, provide a path to the executable file with the logic to scan for new updates, and provide the platform information about the update via application programming interfaces (APIs). The orchestrator will then take over and intelligently schedules the download and installation of the update based on factors such as user activity, system performance, battery status, and more. The tech giant has also listed several benefits for developers. It will let third-party apps list their update notifications within the native Windows Update notifications to create a centralised space to inform users. Users will also be able to check the app update history in the Settings, and a single set of logs and diagnostic data can be used for all updates. Developers building enterprise apps will also be able to support admin policy management for deadlines and notifications by using Microsoft’s systems, the company added. The Windows Update orchestration platform will support MSIX/APPX packaged apps as well as some custom Win32 apps. Interested developers and app publishers can now join Microsoft’s private preview to access these capabilities. However, they will first have to onboard their apps’ installer via APIs. *** retailer Game says some Switch 2 pre-orders have been cancelled *** retailer Game says some Switch 2 pre-orders have been cancelled *** retailer Game has confirmed that it has cancelled a number of Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. In a statement posted on its X account and its customer support website, the retailer said it recently cancelled some Switch 2 pre-orders, but didn’t specify how many customers have been affected and whether the cancellations were a mistake. It also said it’s trying to make some of the cancelled pre-orders active again, but hasn’t yet indicated how many are likely to miss out on receiving a console on launch day. “We sincerely apologise for the recent cancellation of some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders,” the statement reads. “We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order. “We’re currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible. If your order was impacted, please know that we’re doing everything we can and will be in touch with further updates and next steps. “Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this. We truly appreciate your support.” Like most *** retailers, Game is no longer taking pre-orders for Switch 2, as its allocated stock is presumably all accounted for. Guess who brought back Agatha Christie as an AI clone Guess who brought back Agatha Christie as an AI clone Feedback is New Scientist’s popular sideways look at the latest science and technology news. You can submit items you believe may amuse readers to Feedback by emailing *****@*****.tld Death of the author? Now and then, Feedback sees ads for courses promising to teach us how to become an excellent creative writer. It sounds like fun, but why learn to be a good writer when we can just do this stuff instead? One brand that recently caught Feedback’s eye is BBC Maestro. Its course taught by comics legend Alan Moore half-tempted us, but we suspect the professionalised approach might have taken the edges off his thinking. Give us the Moore who believes Northampton is the literal centre of the universe, and who once wrote a 1174-page novel centred on this notion, or give us nothing at all. Maestro’s latest endeavour features a particularly unexpected presenter: crime fiction legend Agatha Christie, who astute readers may realise departed this mortal coil in 1976. The blurb is truly enticing: “In a world-first, the bestselling novelist of all time offers you an unparalleled opportunity to learn the secrets behind her writing, in her own words. Made possible today by Agatha’s family, an expert team of academics and cutting-edge audio and visual specialists, as if she were teaching you herself.” Time travel? Cloning? No, this is an AI duplicate of Christie. Actress Vivien Keene was hired to perform the role of the writer, and AI was then used to alter her face and voice. Something similar – an “avatar powered by gen-AI inspired by Aldous Huxley’s science fiction writings” – was on display at UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day event on 7 May. Malka Older, a humanitarian aid worker and science-fiction writer (possibly the greatest portfolio career ever), was there, and was underwhelmed. On Bluesky, she described the avatar as giving “buzzwordy meaningless literal ‘maybe both’ answers“. It sounds like an enormous amount of hassle to create an AI clone, but we suppose there is a certain security in using bots based on writers who are safely dead and therefore can’t be divas in the studio. On the other hand, Feedback is like all writers: always wondering where the next paycheck is coming from. It’s bad enough losing out on work to people more talented or charismatic than us – now we’re being outcompeted by the dead. Or as Older put it, with not-even-remotely restrained frustration: “There are! Actual living science fiction writers!… You can invite them to speak!! I promise, many of them are at least as insightful as a white man who has more name recognition but has been dead for 60 years!!!!” Feedback agrees: we want to present our own course in whatever it is we do. The light of intelligence It is a truism in science that correlation does not equal causation. Just because one thing seems to vary in line with another doesn’t necessarily mean they are actually linked – unless you want to believe that the divorce rate in Maine is driven by per-capita consumption of margarine. It’s such a basic point that Feedback wouldn’t usually mention it, but every so often we come across a spurious correlation so daft we can’t resist. Reporter James Dinneen draws our gaze to an unreviewed paper with a truly promising title: “Human intelligence forming in the rhythm of solar activity“. It reveals a strong correlation between “high-energy solar proton events” and the number of Nobel laureates born in a given year. The researcher looked specifically at Nobel laureates “in the fields of sciences (including economics) and literature” – and we just want to say that we enjoyed the subtle side-eye inherent in the brackets around “economics”. The number of laureates, the author assures us, has been “adjusted for a six-month prenatal offset”. Why not nine months, or five? Could it be the correlation appears only with that specific hack? Regardless, this leads to the hypothesis that “atmospheric radiation patterns… may act as environmental stressors affecting neural circuit formation during prenatal development”. Yes, that is certainly one interpretation. If anyone knows of a more bizarre correlation-based claim, they should send it to the usual address. Meanwhile, Feedback advises anyone who is pregnant to wear tinfoil, just in case. Cracking stuff Feedback would like to quit nominative determinism, but we just can’t. We were delighted by Andy Green’s email alerting us to consultant urologist Nick Burns-Cox, but a hasty archive search revealed we did him in 2019. However, in a genuine novelty, Stephen Alexander highlights the 19 May edition of BBC Radio 4’s The Briefing Room, the sound engineer for which is one David Crackles. Sam Edge (who we really hope is a mountaineer) flagged two instances in issue 3540 of this very magazine. Our review of the book Intertidal, by a naturalist who began his career bird-watching, somehow failed to flag his “satisfyingly apropos” name: Yuvan Aves. A few pages later, “in your own esteemed column” (see, readers, this is how you get your submissions published; just saying), he noted that “scientific journals were being scanned by one Alexander Magazinov”. Finally, this isn’t quite nominative determinism but is clearly adjacent, and anyway, this is our own esteemed column, we can do what we want. Amy Marschall writes on Bluesky: “**** I just saw a billboard that said ‘Erectile dysfunction is a growing problem‘ “. The question being: was this on purpose, or did someone genuinely not realise?
