Young (35 points, 13 assists) then drove to the basket before dishing the ball to Onyeka Okongwu, but Cunningham blocked his shot as time expired. The Hawks trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half, but tied the game on Daniels’ floater with 3:36 to play. 5. How to revive in Dragon Age: The Veilguard How to revive in Dragon Age: The Veilguard You’re fighting tooth and nail against a powerful ****** in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but suddenly you run out of potions and they hit you with a strong ******* and bring you to zero HP, forcing you to restart the ******. But then you notice there’s a revive button, and for some reason, it’s telling you there are no revives left. If you’re in this situation, you’re not alone. There’s a slightly hidden revive ability in this fantasy RPG that the game doesn’t talk about and you only notice once you’re down. Figuring out how to revive your Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is tougher than it seems, as it requires obtaining certain items first. How to get Revival Charges in Dragon Age: The Veilguard The only way to obtain Revival Charges in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is by wearing gear with the Revival Charges stat. There aren’t any revival objects you can purchase separately, but instead, you can acquire equipment for your Rook or your companions that have a +1 Revival Charge on it. BioWare The Calibration Crystal trinket, for example, is only equipable by Bellara and is available to purchase from the Veil Jumper merchant in Arlathan Forest. Companion trinkets are the most common item to have a Revival Charge stat attached to, but there’s also a Tincture Kit Healing Belt that Rook can wear. Check each Faction’s merchant for companion trinkets with Revival Charges, as Bellara isn’t the only one who can wear one. Lucanis has the Simple Oil and Stone trinket, while Davrin can equip the Creator’s Chisel. BioWare Unfortunately, these trinkets won’t be available for purchase until you’ve reached level three of that Faction’s shop. Upgrade the shop by improving your Faction Strength, which you can do by completing Faction quests and selling valuables to said merchants. Oddly enough, we were able to acquire Bianca’s Bolt (only equipable by Harding for free while exploring), so these trinkets can also be acquired by opening chests throughout the various regions of Northern Thedas. As a tip for finding this gear for free, when exploring companions’ main regions like Arlathan Forest for Bellara or Treviso for Lucanis, you’ll more often discover gear in chests specifically for them. BioWare Once you acquire these trinkets and equip them, you can revive your Rook at the Defeat screen by hitting the button prompt for Revive (Enter key on PC, X on PlayStation, A on Xbox). This will only work if it shows you have Revival Charges available, and if that companion is in your party wearing the trinket. After reviving, you’ll have a second chance at defeating whatever ****** vanquished you. Source link #revive #Dragon #Age #Veilguard Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. Sir Ben Ainslie and his wife reveal they used a surrogate for their second child Sir Ben Ainslie and his wife reveal they used a surrogate for their second child Olympic sailor Sir Ben Ainslie and his wife Georgie have revealed in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that they used a surrogate to have their second child. They described how after years of struggling to conceive, they had used an agency to find a mother in California, where commercial surrogacy is legal. Their son Fox was born in 2021, five years after their daughter Bellatrix, who they had via IVF. After the ordeal of their conception attempts, which Georgie described as a journey “to ***** and back”, Sir Ben called for surrogacy to be “professionalised as much as possible” as they praised the process in the US as “so well-regulated”. In the ***, commercial surrogacy is ********, so a third party cannot profit from matching people, though it is not ******** for a surrogate to be paid expenses. High-profile feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Julie Bindel argue that surrogacy commodifies a woman’s body, leaving surrogates, who are often from poorer backgrounds, open to exploitation. IVF – or in vitro fertilisation – is when an egg is removed from a woman’s ovaries and fertilised with ****** in a laboratory. The fertilised egg is then returned to the woman’s womb to develop. In the words of the Telegraph, the couple chose to tell their story now primarily because they “want to help get rid of some of the stigma surrounding surrogacy, and to educate others in a similar situation”. Sir Ben, 47, a four-time Olympic champion who led a British crew in the America’s Cup last month, met his wife in 2011 when she was a Sky Sports presenter. They married in December 2014, when Georgie was 37. “Like everyone you think ‘Oh, it will be easy to go from doing whatever you were doing in your working life to, you know, making a family work,'” she told the paper. “But pretty soon we were like, ‘Actually, this is proving to be ******* than we realised.’ That was when we went on our first IVF journey with Bellatrix.” The 30 or so eggs initially harvested from Georgie resulted in a single embryo that became their first baby in 2016, she recalled. However, when they tried for a second child, they went through seven further rounds of IVF, the last of them using a donor egg. None worked. “It was an incredibly difficult *******,” said Sir Ben. “We had three miscarriages during that time – at eight weeks, 12 weeks and 14 weeks.” Both admit, the Telegraph says, that had it been up to him, they would have stopped after the last miscarriage but they had two donor eggs left that were viable. “I persisted and eventually we did get there,” said Georgie. The couple accept that the financial costs of surrogacy are “prohibitive – tens of thousands of pounds”. As for ethical concerns, Georgie said, surrogacy “felt like the last step” in their IVF journey using “Ben’s ******, a donor egg and a surrogate carrier”. “It’s the hardest thing we’ve ever done,” said Sir Ben. “But in the end it was one of the most rewarding.” Source link #Sir #Ben #Ainslie #wife #reveal #surrogate #child Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. How to transfer data from PS5 to PS5 Pro How to transfer data from PS5 to PS5 Pro Giovanni Colantonio / Digital Trends As great as the PlayStation 5 Pro is, no one can deny that it is quite expensive. To that end, many PS5 owners are likely planning on selling their current model to help offset some of the cost. However, you don’t want to sell your old unit before you ensure that all your data for the best PS5 games is safely transferred over to the Pro. If you’re getting ready to upgrade to the Pro, here’s how you can transfer your data so you can pick up right where you left off and enjoy the nice graphical boost. How to transfer your PS5 data to the PS5 Pro There are three ways to move your data from your base PS5 to the Pro, with this method being the most simple. It does require you to have access to both consoles, however, so make sure you don’t sell your old console before performing this process. Step 1: Connect your PS5 and PS5 Pro to the same local network. Step 2: On your PS5 Pro, go to Settings > System Software. Step 3: Scroll down and select Data Transfer. Step 4: Follow the prompts to have your PS5 Pro search the network for your PS5. Step 5: Assuming both consoles are on and connected to the network, it will begin transferring the data automatically. Sony How to transfer data using PS Plus Another option to move your data to the PS5 Pro is to use the cloud save feature as part of PlayStation Plus Essential. Step 1: Start your PS5 and go into Settings. Step 2: Select Save Data and Game/App Settings. Step 3: Choose Saved Data (PS5). Step 4: Under Console Storage choose Upload to Cloud Storage. Step 5: Either choose which files you want to upload manually or simply select Select All. Step 6: Press Upload. Step 7: Connect your PS5 Pro to the internet and go back into the Saved Data and Game/App Settings menu. Step 8: Choose Save Data (PS5) and then go to Cloud Storage. Step 9: Select Download to Console Storage. Step 10: Again, choose either specific files or Select All to download all your data. WD How to transfer data using an SSD or USB drive Your last option requires you to have a separate SSD or USB drive for your PS5. If you have an SSD and your data is already saved on it, then all you need to do is install it into your PS5 Pro. If you’re using a USB drive, here’s how that process works. Step 1: Insert the USB drive into your base PS5. Step 2: Go to Settings > System Software > Back Up and Restore. Step 3: Select Back Up Your PS5 and choose your USB device. Step 4: Once done, take the USB drive from the PS5 and insert it in the PS5 Pro, and go to Settings > Back Up and Restore > Restore your PS5. Step 5: Select the USB drive and wait for it to download your files. Be aware that using the USB method will reset your PS5 Pro to factory default settings, meaning you should do this first since it will wipe any new data you put on the console. We’ve done our best to include a few different games and accessories that we think everybody might be interested in. Early ****** Friday deals are ramping up, but think about the Nintendo Switch all year long. There are some long-running Nintendo Switch deals we’ve collected, and if you’re looking for general recommendations, check out our rankings of the best Switch games. Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle — $337 $360 6% off Nintendo If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a Nintendo Switch yet, then this bundle includes a whole host of items that make the 6% discount worth it. Besides the Nintendo Switch itself, you also get Mariokart 8 Deluxe and three months of Nintendo Online membership, which itself is worth quite a bit, so you’re saving more than the 6% off. SanDisk 128GB microSDXC Card — $19 $45 46% off Nintendo While it’s great to have a physical copy of games, there are a lot of great deals on digital games, as well as games that simple don’t have physical copies. So, instead of filling up the internal storage, this 128GB MicroSD is a great way to get a lot more capacity, especially since it’s going for $19 instead of $45, a massive 46% discount. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — $25 $40 38% off Ubisoft Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a Metroidvania game set in the Prince of Persia universe, and it’s a lot of fun. Given that it’s at the top of the best Zelda games on Switch, this 25% discount makes it worth grabbing. How to Choose a Nintendo Switch Deal on ****** Friday When the Nintendo Switch originally came out, there weren’t a lot of options; in fact, there wasn’t even an OLED model that you could buy with the upgraded screen. Nowadays, there’s been a ***** in games and accessories, so there are a ton of options out there. When it comes to the Nintendo Switch itself, if you’re mostly going to be playing with it docked, then you should get the more affordable base model, but if you do plan to use it as a handheld console more, then the higher cost of the OLED model is really worth it. When it comes to games, if you’re looking to not spend too much, then you can’t go wrong with the first-party Nintendo games like Mariokart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Dread, and so forth, so it’s worth looking at those to see which you like. As for accessories, a lot of that will depend on the sort of games you play, but it is worth grabbing a “full” controller, either from Nintendo or a 3rd-party seller, since the Joy-***** can be a bit difficult to use, especially for longer periods. There are also a couple of fun accessories that let you put the Joy-***** inside them and use them that way, such as the wheel accessory, which is a lot of fun for racing games. How We Chose These Nintendo Switch ****** Friday Deals Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of great Nintendo Switch deals floating around these days, which means that we mostly have to rely on finding great deals for games and accessories. That said, there are some refurbished Nintendo Switch deals that we may add or remove based on how good we thing the deal is and whether it’s worth the offer. Other than that, we do our best to include a good selection of games and accessories so you can pick and match what works for your favorite type of gaming. We also rely on our expertise as deal hunters and our tools to ensure you’re getting the best deal for the money you’re putting in. 12. England v Australia: Wallabies plot Twickenham shock England v Australia: Wallabies plot Twickenham shock Borthwick has made changes in the hope his finishers can match up to the job description. All-brawn Luke Cowan-Dickie comes into the squad in place of all-court Theo Dan. The six-two split on the bench between forwards and backs has been abandoned in favour of a more conventional five-three split, meaning the pack won’t be shuffled as dramatically in the closing stages. The only change to the starting XV is a positional switch in midfield, with Ollie Lawrence swapping to outside centre and Henry Slade coming inside to 12. The theory is that it should enable Lawrence – restricted to two carries against New Zealand – to get the ball in more space. However, the revival of a dual playmaker shape that worked fitfully under Eddie Jones has potential weaknesses. Slade will have to lead the backline defence from a different perspective, clocking dangers both inside and outside. Just back from shoulder surgery, he is also placed in the high-traffic lane where Lawrence made 27 tackles against the All *******. Len Ikitau – Australia’s hard-running inside centre – is sure to test Slade early. On the other side of the ball, England certainly need something to spark their *******. Against New Zealand, they were heavy on perspiration, but light on inspiration. England’s solitary try came from a smart Marcus Smith intercept of a ponderous pass, but they rarely looked as if they could pick a way though the defence via their own wit. Among the world’s top 10 nations, only Wales have been less efficient in turning entries into the 22 into points this year. England have some fine attacking talents. But, whether it is the system or individuals within it, potential has not been cashed in as points. If it had, their last four defeats – all by a converted score or less – could have been very different. England’s repeated ******** to get over the horizon and out of sight will give 5-1 outsiders Australia hope. The instant installation of Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii in the backline will add to it, even if the weight of expectation will surely sit heavy on the 21-year-old. 13. GTA 6: everything we know so far GTA 6: everything we know so far Believe it or not, it has been over a decade since the last GTA game. While tons of people are still dumping hundreds of hours into GTA Online, everyone had been (not so) patiently waiting for Rockstar to finally confirm that a new entry is in the works. Despite many leaks and rumors, the team held strong until late 2023. Now that the game is finally confirmed, we have a lot more solid ground to cover in terms of what Grand Theft Auto 6 will offer. This is going to be the biggest game of the generation, and by far the most anticipated upcoming game, so let’s hotwire a car and pull off a heist to get all the information there is about GTA 6. GTA 6 release date window Rockstar Games GTA 6 is set to release sometime in fall 2025, according to reports. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive, confirmed the launch window in a May 2024 earnings call. “Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games’ previously established window of calendar 2025 to fall of calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI. We are highly confident that Rockstar Games will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, and our expectations for the commercial impact of the title continue to increase,” Zelnick explained in a press release discussing the outlook for fiscal year 2025. During an interview with CNBC in November 2024, Zelnick once again commented on the release window for GTA 6, stating, “Well, there is slippage in the industry and we’re not immune from that. However, we narrowed the timing because we are highly confident in that timing.” So, while there is always a chance problems arise that cause a delay, everything appears to be on track for the game to stick to that fall 2025 window. GTA 6 trailer Watch Trailer 1: Tuesday, December 5 at 9AM ET The GTA 6 trailer was announced to be released on December 5, 2023, but was dropped a day early after a leaked version found its way online. Regardless, we now have our first look at the world and characters. The protagonists of GTA 6 will be a pair rather than a single character or trio like past games. First is Lucia, who appears to have some ********* background based on her appearing in a prison uniform in the trailer. The other lead is a male character who we don’t have a name for just yet, but is clearly her partner in ****** — and romance by the looks of it. Perhaps the most important part of any GTA game is the setting, and for GTA 6, Rockstar is bringing us back to Vice City. Of course, this time we’ll be seeing it in the modern day instead of the late 1980s like before. The trailer shows a wide range of environments, from beaches and bustling city streets to suburbs and swamps. GTA 6 platforms Rockstar Games GTA 6 is only officially confirmed to be coming to PlayStation 5and Xbox Series X/S at launch. While we can safely say this game won’t come to last-generation consoles or the Switch, it not being on PC does seem like a strange omission. GTA 5 did take two years to come to PC, but Red ***** Redemption 2 arrived only about two weeks later, so it is possible the PC release might just come slightly later, but that would still be a big disappointment for that player base. That does leave the next Nintendo console up in the air as well. GTA 6 gameplay Rockstar Games The trailer didn’t show any real gameplay for GTA 6 and instead was all cinematic. Based on that, though, we can assume quite a bit about what the game will play like. Just to get it out of the way, yes, you can rest assured knowing that GTA 6 will feature plenty of *********, driving, and ********* activities. The trailer showed off robberies, high-speed chases, and plenty of partying. Beyond that, however, we mainly have to speculate or go off of very old leaks. We do think that GTA 6 will continue the trend of allowing players to swap between first- and third-person perspectives. This was added to GTA 5 and included at launch for Red ***** Redemption 2. If the trailer is any indication, the amount of characters and action on-screen at any time means the world will be more densely packed than ever. Each NPC looks unique and appears very much “alive” while interacting with the world. Aside from ********* and running them over, we hope to see a lot more ways to interact with regular NPCs. In a world that big, expect tons of side activities, minigames, and other distractions to discover and waste away hours on. Each title has upped the ante in terms of extras, and we don’t think GTA 6 will fall short here. Will GTA 6 have GTA Online? Rockstar Games Arguably the most prominent change that came with GTA V was the implementation of GTA Online. This mode became the backbone of the game, roping in millions of players (and dollars) for a shared experience. The base game is excellent, but GTA Online is what has kept GTA V relevant nearly a decade after launch. The point is that we’ll almost certainly get some sort of multiplayer functionality with GTA 6. Whether that means the entire game is online only or if there’s a dedicated multiplayer mode like the previous installment ******** to be seen — but we can almost guarantee it will have an online mode. Considering just how successful GTA Online became, it’s unlikely Rockstar will drop multiplayer functionality from the next installment. Oddly enough, GTA 6’s version of GTA Online apparently won’t include dedicated servers. This comes by way of insider Tez, who said: “Take-Two rejected a proposal for dedicated servers a few years ago. They considered it cost-prohibitive for them.” The real big question is if this new GTA Online will be available at launch or be a staggered release. The first version came out almost a month after GTA 5, and Red ***** Online took even longer at almost seven months. We don’t expect it to be nearly that long for GTA 6, but Rockstar may want to give players a few weeks to play the main game before tempting them with the online mode. And it would also be like a second launch to get back in the headlines. When will you be able to preorder GTA 6? As expected, GTA 6 preorders aren’t available yet. Since the game isn’t coming until 2025 at the earliest, we don’t anticipate getting any preorder information until that date is nailed down sometime that same year. Of course, it could be even further out if those delays do end up being true. In any case, we will update you with preorder information on GTA 6 as soon as it is available. 15. Trump’s shunning of transition planning may have severe consequences, governance group says Trump’s shunning of transition planning may have severe consequences, governance group says WASHINGTON (AP) — A good-governance group is warning of severe consequences if President-elect Donald Trump continues to steer clear of formal transition planning with the Biden administration — inaction that it says is already limiting the federal government’s ability to provide security clearances and briefings to the incoming administration. Without the planning, says Max Stier, president and CEO of the nonprofit Partnership for Public Service, “it would not be possible” to “be ready to govern on day one.” The president-elect’s transition is being led by Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, the former wrestling executive who led the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term. They said last month that they expected to sign agreements beginning the formal transition process with the Biden White House and the General Services Administration, which acts essentially as the federal government’s landlord. But those agreements are still unsigned, and the pressure is beginning to mount. The delay is holding up the federal government’s ability to begin processing security clearances for potentially hundreds of Trump administration national security appointees. That could limit the staff who could work on sensitive information by Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. It also means Trump appointees can’t yet access federal facilities, documents and personnel to prepare for taking office. The agreements are required by the Presidential Transition Act, which was enacted in 2022. They mandate that the president-elect’s team agree to an ethics plan and to limit and disclose private donations. In that act, Congress set deadlines of Sept. 1 for the GSA agreement and Oct. 1 for the White House agreement, in an effort to ensure that incoming administrations are prepared to govern when they enter office. Both deadlines have long since come and gone. Stier, whose organization works with candidates and incumbents on transitions, said on a call with reporters on Friday that a new administration “walks in with the responsibility of taking over the most complex operation on the planet.” “In order to do that effectively, they absolutely need to have done a lot of prework,” he said, adding that Trump’s team “has approached this in a, frankly, different way than any other prior transition has.” “They have, up until now, walked past all of the tradition and, we believe, vital agreements with the federal government,” Stier said. In a statement this week, Lutnick and McMahon said Trump was “selecting personnel to serve our nation under his leadership and enact policies that make the life of Americans affordable, safe, and secure.” They didn’t mention signing agreements to begin the transition. A person familiar with the matter said that the congressionally mandated ethics disclosures and contribution limits were factors in the hesitance to sign the agreements. Trump transition spokesperson Brian Hughes said Friday that the team’s “lawyers continue to constructively engage with the Biden-Harris Administration lawyers regarding all agreements contemplated by the Presidential Transition Act.” “We will update you once a decision is made,” Hughes said. The Trump team’s reluctance has persisted despite Biden’s White House chief of staff, Jeff Zients, reaching out to Lutnick and McMahon to reiterate the important role the agreements with the Biden administration and GSA play in beginning a presidential transition. “We’re here to assist. We want to have a peaceful transition of power,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “We want to make sure they have what they need.” The unorthodox approach to the presidential transition process recalls the ******* immediately after Trump’s Election Day victory in 2016. Days later, the president-elect fired the head of his transition team, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and tossed out a transition playbook he’d been compiling. But Stier said that, even then, Trump’s team had signed the initial agreements that allowed the transition to get started — something that hasn’t happened this time. “The story’s not finished. But they’re late,” he said. “And even if they manage to get these agreements in now, they’re late in getting those done.” Source link #Trumps #shunning #transition #planning #severe #consequences #governance #group Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The first minister is to become the first senior Sinn Féin figure to take part in an official Remembrance Sunday ceremony in Belfast. In a letter published in The Irish News more than 100 relatives of victims of the Troubles from the *********** community in County Tyrone hit out at her decision. The letter said they felt “deeply hurt, frustrated and ******”. O’Neill said she “understands that some people will have difficulty” with her attendance but she is “committed to be a first minister for all”. ‘Devastating’ for families Michelle O’Neill was attending an event at a Magherafelt school She was speaking during a visit to a primary school in Magherafelt. The letter accused the first minister of “populism” and said Sinn Féin had “turned political somersaults into an Olympic sport”. ‘This is about leadership’ “I want to live up to the pledge that I made to represent everybody here in society,” O’Neill said in response to the criticism. She added that she will attend on Sunday but “absolutely understands” that people will feel hurt, “because there is nothing to celebrate in the horror of war”. “Many people will have lost loved ones and will feel that very dearly, so I absolutely understand where anybody is coming from but for me this is about leadership in terms of my role as first minister for all the people that live here.” ‘Disappointed but not surprised’ Seana Quinn and Angela McKearney are two of those who signed the letter. They lost family members in incidents they believe involved collusion between paramilitaries and security forces. Speaking to Radio Ulster’s Evening Extra programme, they said the First Minister’s decision left them “extremely disappointed.” Seana, who lost her brother in 1991, told the programme she believes “Sinn Féin are acknowledging British war *******, we as a family are still very much hurting and the British government have refused to acknowledge the wrongdoings in the loss of my loved ones.” She added: “I felt so much hurt. I was so disappointed, we have been fighting for justice for the ****** of my brother who was ******* at 17 years of age. “This language and terminology is used as an excuse to endorse the crown forces and to normalise their presence in our country.” Angela, who lost both her uncle and brother in 1992, said she was “disappointed but not surprised, given Sinn Fein members over the years have met and greeted with the commander-in-chief of the British police and military.” She added: “If she is a first minister for all, I’m included in that.” Source link #Michelle #ONeill #understands #hurt #Remembrance #Sunday #event Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The report further underlined that a common lesson was that AI was likely to increase the dynamism of the labor market by prompting more workers to leave existing jobs and start new ones. The institute noted that administrative and secretarial jobs would be the most exposed to the new technology, followed by sales and customer service, and banking and finance. 20. Orkney island gets broadband via water pipes in *** first Orkney island gets broadband via water pipes in *** first CloudNet The fibre cable is delivered through a second pipe housed within the drinking water network Homes and businesses in the Orkney island of Papa Westray are now receiving their internet through the water network, in what is believed to be a *** first. Cables have been ***** within existing water pipes, using the islands community-owned water system, enabling full fibre broadband to almost all properties. The innovation allows locals to do things they couldn’t previously, like attending medical appointments remotely and gaming. It’s now hoped it will attract people to live and work in the island and that water networks could be used to deliver broadband in other hard-to-reach areas. In total, it took around eight months to install the network In the past, Papa Westray has suffered from poor connectivity, with internet speeds either slow or non-existent. This has limited what the 90 or so residents there can do. In total, it took around eight months to install the network, which was carried out by local contractors CloudNet. The internet connection initially reaches Papa Westray via a radio link from neighbouring isle of Westray, before being distributed across the island using the water pipes. The fibre cable is delivered through a second pipe housed within the drinking water network. The island became the first to use this approach successfully because the water system is owned by the community, making the work a more efficient and less disruptive alternative to conventional cable laying methods. Mr Cursiter helped to install the broadband on the island Ian Cursiter, a Water Board supply engineer and farmer in Papa Westray, has lived on the island his whole life. For the first time, the broadband allows him to access the same facilities as those elsewhere. He is now able to watch calves being born from the comfort of his bedroom, allowing him to catch up on sleep. “If you’re disturbing them when they’re calving sometimes they just stop and they look at you like they want to get on with it, so that’s one of the good things. “We had an analogue system for one or two years but the cameras didn’t seem to last very well. The digital side of things is so much better, I find that anyway.” The camera can move 360 degrees, meaning Mr Crusiter can see what’s going on from all angles. He was one of the workers who helped to install the broadband and said it’s “amazing and different”. The system also means the chance of a calf dying is less likely, as Mr Cursiter is able to monitor the situation closely. He says the costs to put the cameras in is “worth it” if it means saving a calf’s life. Mr Cursiter is able to watch his cattle while calving Remote sensors placed in the water pipe also provide a hi-tech way to monitor the island’s water quality. CloudNet received funding to carry out the work through the Reaching 100% (R100) programme from the Scottish government. Managing director of CloudNet, Greg Whitton, said the company was “proud” to have delivered the first successful commercial project of its kind in the ***, to the most remote island in Orkney. “The benefits to fibre in the water is you don’t need to excavate and you can run over a kilometre without having to do any land. You’re just utilising the water network to provide fibre to properties at home,” he said. Mr Whitton said the island was left behind in terms of internet speed, so he is happy there is now a solution for it. He said there were challenges making sure the system could be designed and installed in a way that worked for the island. “I think with the help of the islanders it’s been a big challenge because we’ve learnt a lot through the programme. But I think the uplift and success of it has been really good.” Source link #Orkney #island #broadband #water #pipes Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  21. Metro Awakening and Arkham Shadow are the future of VR games Metro Awakening and Arkham Shadow are the future of VR games After years of waiting, VR adaptations of iconic video game franchises are at a turning point with the release of Batman: Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening. While it has been over a decade since the Oculus Rift seriously kicked off VR gaming as a worthwhile subsect of this medium, it has taken a while for it to hit console and PC gaming’s AAA quality level. If a flatscreen game or series got adapted for VR, it was with a short and simple tech demo-like release or a VR conversion of an older game beholden to the design constraints of a classic. This still yielded some good results, but it meant VR gaming lacked an identity within ********* gaming franchises and was relegated to novelty spinoff status. Within the last month, Batman: Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening both released, indicating that something has changed. These full-fledged AAA VR experiences aren’t just novelty VR conversions of beloved console franchises, but worthwhile games of their own. If VR gaming is going to continue to stay relevant, it needs more games like Batman and Metro. The best kind of VR adaptation To see how far VR gaming has come, we simply need to compare 2016’s Batman: Arkham VR to 2024’s Batman: Arkham Shadow. Although Arkham VR was developed by Rocksteady and featured some cool moments, it could be beaten in just a couple of hours and did not match the game flow of titles like Arkham City or Arkham Knight. A game like that certainly had its place in the early days of VR, but in 2024, expectations are much higher. Thankfully, Arkham Shadow delivered. It is still much more linear than Arkham Knight, but from a gameplay and narrative perspective, it does a significantly better job at matching the heights of Rocksteady’s trilogy. Combat is emphasized and still has a rhythmic quality to it, stealth and detective mode segments are peppered throughout, and it delivers a compelling Batman narrative about teaching the Caped Crusader empathy. Camouflaj Then there’s Vertigo Games’ Metro Awakening. The developers could have gone the route of remaking a game like Metro 2033 for VR or adding a VR mode to 4A Games’ Metro Exodus. We’ve seen many developers go down that route when making VR entries of flatscreen franchises. These can be great, like Resident Evil 4’s Meta Quest release, but they come off as one-note distractions and are not the true way to play these classic games. Instead, Metro Awakening is a distinct entry in the Metro series, a prequel revealing the backstory of Khan. It translates the cramped tunnels and survival shooter mechanics of the flatscreen Metro games to VR, and both work well within the tech medium with very few changes. Like Arkham Shadow, it also supports a console-quality narrative worthy of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s franchise. These are two of the best VR games I’ve ever played, and they both do the same things right while bringing a flatscreen gaming franchise to VR. More than a novelty Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening work well because they feel like equals to their counterparts. Too often, VR games either feel too simple in how they play, don’t feature quality narratives, and fail to live up to the standards of console gaming. Metro and Batman not only buck all of those trends, but do so while faithfully adapting well-known gaming IP to VR. If VR is going to evolve as a gaming medium, it needs to not only establish breakout new franchises like Asgard’s Wrath, but demonstrate how beloved, existing franchises can make a full transition to virtual reality. Plaion Half-Life Alyx showed us all of these things in 2020. You can find success in VR by using a fantastic flatscreen game as a base, homing in on the parts that could immerse the players in a VR experience, and delivering a complete narrative experience with it. Game development takes time, so it took other VR developers a while to catch up, but games like Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening indicate that we’ve turned a corner for VR games; the quality bar has been raised and it’s not all too far off from traditional gaming anymore. At this point, VR is very unlikely to replace console, PC, or mobile gaming as the primary way to play. Flatscreen gaming is simply more convenient and less straining on the body. That doesn’t mean it should be relegated to safe tech demos or unambitious modes and remasters. VR can be home to AAA-quality games, including ones that can stand toe-to-toe with their console counterparts. I hope Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening are more than just a moment for VR gaming; I hope they serve as a reminder of a standard that all developers and franchises entering the VR space should meet. Batman: Arkham Shadow and Metro Awakening are both available on Meta Quest 3. Metro Awakening is also available through PC VR and PlayStation VR2. A federal grand jury in Los Angeles approves new charges against Lil Durk A federal grand jury in Los Angeles approves new charges against Lil Durk A federal grand jury in Los Angeles this week approved new charges against Lil Durk in connection with a 2022 *******-for-hire plot that targeted a rival rapper but instead left the man’s cousin *****. The U.S. attorney’s office in the Central District of California announced Friday that a grand jury returned a superseding indictment charging Lil Durk — the 32-year-old Chicago native born Durk Banks — with one count of *********** and one count of use of interstate facilities to commit *******-for-hire resulting in ******. It also charged him with one count of using, carrying and discharging firearms and a machine ****, as well as possession of such firearms in furtherance of a ****** of ********* resulting in ******. Banks, 32, remained at the federal lockup in Miami on Friday, where he has been since his arrest last month, allegedly while trying to flee the country on a private jet. He’s being held without bond pending his transfer to Los Angeles to face the charges. Court dates there have not been set. Feds: Chicago rapper Lil Durk planned private flight to Italy before charges in *******-for-hire plot filed Banks and five others were charged last month in separate cases that alleged a cross-country *********** to avenge the 2020 slaying of King Von, born Dayvon Bennett, another Chicago rapper and close friend of Banks who was gunned down in Atlanta in 2020. Charged in the initial indictment were: Kavon London Grant; Deandre Dontrell Wilson; Keith Jones; David Brian Lindsey; and Asa Houston. Arraignment hearings for all six are expected in the coming weeks, according to the prosecutors’ office. Banks is accused of offering money and “lucrative music opportunities” to anyone who would ***** Quando Rondo, a Georgia-based rapper whose real name is Tyquian Terrel Bowman. Bowman, his sister and his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, 24, were riding in Bowman’s ****** Cadillac Escalade near a gas station in West Hollywood in August 2022 when gunmen opened *****, according to the charges. Bowman and his sister were not injured, but Robinson was struck multiple times and *******. The superseding indictment also alleges Lil Durk “sought to commercialize” Robinson’s ******. After the *********, Banks released a song that included news footage that featured Bowman’s reaction to his cousin’s ******. The song, the indictment says, “explicitly references audio from a news clip taken shortly after (Robinson’s) ******* where (Bowman) screamed ‘no, no!’ after seeing (Robinson’s) ***** body.” OTF was founded by Lil Durk more than a decade ago as Chicago’s drill rap scene was gaining international attention. Federal prosecutors say the group primarily “produced and sold hip hop music” from artists from Chicago. FBG Duck, the Chicago drill rapper, was ******* in a hail of gunfire on Oak Street in 2020, and his ****** led to the convictions of several men in a federal *********** trial last January. Earlier this month, FBG Duck’s mother filed a lawsuit alleging Lil Durk, OTF and King Von were involved in the *********, as well. The lawsuit alleges that OTF operates as a ********* enterprise. According to the initial indictment, after tracking Bowman to the Los Angeles area, Grant rented a hotel room for the co-conspirators on Aug. 18, 2022, and later met them there. He brought several firearms, including one that had been modified to operate as a fully automatic machine ****. Grant also provided two rented vehicles to “use to find, track and *****” Bowman, the indictment stated, a white BMW sedan and a white Infiniti. The group followed and tracked Bowman’s ****** Escalade from his hotel to a ********** dispensary and then a clothing store in downtown Los Angeles, the indictment stated. A surveillance image included in the indictment allegedly shows the BMW and Infiniti following the Escalade as it traveled between stores. When Bowman stopped at a gas station, Houston drove around to the alley and let Jones and Lindsey and another unidentified co-conspirator out to carry out the *********, according to the indictment.
