The Iran-backed rebels fired a mix of anti-ship missiles and exploding drones. The US military defeated all the threats, a Pentagon spokesperson said. The US Navy defeated a complex ******* launched by the Houthis on Monday that saw the rebels ***** several missiles and drones at two ********* warships off the coast of Yemen, a Pentagon spokesperson said on Tuesday. The destroyers USS Stockdale and USS Spruance came under ***** as they were transiting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a strategic maritime chokepoint between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Navy repelled multiple Houthi attacks involving at least three anti-ship cruise missiles, five anti-ship ballistic missiles, and eight one-way ******* drones, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters at a press briefing Tuesday. Ryder said that the attacks were “successfully engaged and defeated. The vessels were not damaged; no personnel were hurt.” Earlier, the Houthis said they attacked the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea and two unnamed ********* destroyers in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed rebels said that they achieved their objectives. The Stockdale is one of the vessels that came under ******* on Monday.US Navy photo Ryder said he was unaware of any ******* on the Lincoln. His announcement came several hours after US Central Command published footage showing fighter jets taking off from the Lincoln to “support operations” against the Houthis. It was not immediately clear if that footage was related to the Monday ******* on the destroyers or earlier US military action against the rebels. Ryder also shared that US forces carried out precision airstrikes against multiple Houthi weapons storage facilities in Yemen over the weekend. He said the operation involved F-35 stealth aircraft, which were seen in Centcom’s footage. The ******* against the destroyers on Monday marks the latest Houthi ******* on Navy warships off the coast of Yemen. In late September, US forces fended off a similarly complex missile and drone ********. The Navy has routinely intercepted Houthi missiles and drones targeting military and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden over the past year. In response to the attacks, ********* forces carried out airstrikes the next day against nine targets in two locations linked to Iranian groups. Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, the Centcom commander, said attacks against US and coalition partners in the Middle East “will not be tolerated.” “We will continue to take every step necessary to protect our personnel and coalition partners and respond to reckless attacks,” he said in a statement on the US airstrikes. 3. SpaceX Plans To Develop ‘Marslink’ Network To Provide Internet On Mars SpaceX Plans To Develop ‘Marslink’ Network To Provide Internet On Mars SpaceX has proposed an ambitious satellite network around Mars, aiming to enhance communication for future missions to the planet. Dubbed “Marslink,” this concept was presented at a recent NASA-led meeting by the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group, where SpaceX pitched the idea of placing satellites in Mars’ orbit to create a relay system for data exchange. The proposal aligns with SpaceX’s broader goals to support Mars exploration and potentially human habitation on Mars. Marslink’s Potential Role in Mars Missions As per a report by Spaceflight News, the Marslink network would be based on the existing Starlink satellite model, which SpaceX has deployed in Earth’s orbit to provide global internet coverage. With thousands of Starlink satellites currently in orbit, and over 102 countries using the network, SpaceX envisions a similar infrastructure for Mars. Marslink could provide constant connectivity for Mars surface assets and enhance interplanetary communication, aiding NASA’s objectives to develop sustainable exploration infrastructure on the Red Planet. Competing Proposals from Blue Origin and Lockheed Martin The report further mentions that NASA also reviewed alternative proposals from companies like Blue Origin and Lockheed Martin. Blue Origin presented its Blue Ring orbital tug concept, which would deliver data relay capabilities and perform in-space cloud computing. The report further mentions that this project is scheduled for initial testing in the Pentagon-sponsored DarkSky-1 mission, although a precise launch date has not been set. Lockheed Martin proposed leveraging the existing MAVEN spacecraft, which was launched in 2013 to study Mars’ atmospheric evolution. In Lockheed’s plan, MAVEN would be moved to a communications orbit, enabling it to operate as a relay similar to NASA’s Earth-based Deep Space Network. NASA’s Shift Towards Private Sector Collaboration NASA’s consideration of private sector-led projects reflects a growing reliance on commercial partnerships for Mars exploration. The agency plans to collaborate with companies capable of providing the technical resources needed for future human missions. NASA is also working on laser-based communication technologies, which would allow for faster and more efficient data transmission across deep-space distances. 4. Wasps: Former Premiership club secure land to build new stadium in Kent Wasps: Former Premiership club secure land to build new stadium in Kent The Premiership was cut from 13 clubs to 10 in the space of one season as Worcester Warriors, London Irish and Wasps all buckled under financial strain. Wasps were once a powerhouse of English rugby, winning seven trophies in a glorious six-season spell from 2002 to 2008 with players including England World Cup winners Lawrence Dallaglio, Josh Lewsey and Joe Worsley. The club claimed their third consecutive Premiership title and a league and ********* Champions Cup double in 2003-04. Wasps had been based at various homes in London from the club’s inception up to 2002, when they moved to groundshare with Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park. In 2014, the club then relocated to the West Midlands. The club was suspended in October 2022 before going into administration a week later and making 167 players and staff redundant. Worcester’s vacated Sixways Stadium had been an option for Wasps to return to playing competitive rugby but in October 2023 Holland said the owners were determined to return the club to the south east. 5. Neom CEO departs as Saudi Arabia scales back mega-projects | Saudi Arabia Neom CEO departs as Saudi Arabia scales back mega-projects | Saudi Arabia Nadhmi al-Nasr, the longtime chief executive of the $500bn Saudi development project Neom launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has departed, according to a Neom statement issued on Tuesday that did not give a reason for the departure. Prince Mohammed has poured hundreds of billions of dollars into development projects through the kingdom’s PIF sovereign wealth fund. The Red Sea mega-project, an urban and industrial development nearly the size of Belgium due to house nearly 9 million people, is central to the prince’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil. But some of the schemes have had to be scaled back due to rising costs, including the Line, a futuristic city between mirrored walls extending 170km (106 miles) into the desert within Neom. Reuters reported in May that the $925bn PIF was weighing a reorganisation, aiming to sharpen its focus on investments that have a higher chance of success. Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, is still heavily reliant on hydrocarbon revenues, and low oil prices and production have dented state coffers. Aiman al-Mudaifer was named as acting CEO of Neom. He has been the head of the Local Real Estate Division at PIF since 2018 and has a deep understanding of Neom and its projects, Neom’s statement said. “As Neom enters a new phase of delivery, this new leadership will ensure operational continuity, agility and efficiency to match the overall vision and objectives of the project,” the press release reads. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly ***** in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. 6. Familiar foe Renard leads Saudis against Socceroos Familiar foe Renard leads Saudis against Socceroos There have been a few more familiar foes in *********** football in recent times than Herve Renard. And now the Saudi Arabia coach, who is currently locked in a personal 1-1 battle with Australia, wants to take the lead. The Frenchman known for his exuberance and tight white collared shirts has taken on both the Socceroos and the Matildas over the past three years. As Saudi boss, Renard captivated the football world with a passionate half-time speech in the extraordinary 2-1 group-stage win over eventual champions Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. Renard, in his famous attire, initially coached against the Socceroos in the 2022 qualification cycle, earning a home 1-0 win and away 0-0 draw to claim a direct spot to Qatar. After the Matildas beat a Renard-led France at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the charismatic manager jokingly promised to seek revenge at this year’s Paris Olympics. That rematch never arrived. But he will get to lock horns with another group of Australians at AAMI Park on Thursday night. “Yeah, we can say the score is 1-1,” Renard said with a smile. “Because we finished in front of you, we qualified for the World Cup 2022. “You beat us with France in the penalty ****** out. “This is football. It was a tough game, we scored, the goal was not allowed and we finished very far in the night. “But it was a fantastic World Cup. Congratulations to you because we just left quickly after the game, but the World Cup was amazing. “Tomorrow, it’s another context, also for the World Cup qualifiers. So this is very important in our career.” Renard was also, briefly, among the contenders to replace Graham Arnold. He noted he was already under contract with the Saudis when FA started looking for Arnold’s replacement, but confirmed he had been on the organisation’s shortlist. Renard was officially named Roberto Mancini’s replacement late last month, charged with turning Saudi Arabia’s campaign around. Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, in his first meeting with Renard, is ready. “It’s a change. He obviously has a lot of experience with the team. He had them for four years, did a very good job with them, fantastic at the World Cup, as we know,” Popovic said. “He had the (French) Olympic team, the women. So we monitored what he did in both jobs that he had, and we expect them to bring that energy and enthusiasm, which comes about from playing for a big country. “So we expect that tomorrow night, a very energetic, determined, maybe desperate, to get a result.” Source link #Familiar #foe #Renard #leads #Saudis #Socceroos Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. Trump selects Elon Musk to lead government efficiency department | Donald Trump Trump selects Elon Musk to lead government efficiency department | Donald Trump Elon Musk and former *********** presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, Donald Trump said on Tuesday. Despite the name, the department will not be a government agency. Trump said in a statement that Musk and Ramaswamy will work from outside government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before.” He added that the move would shock government systems. Trump said the duo “will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies”. Posting on X, the social media platform he owns, Musk pledged to document all actions of the department online for “maximum transparency”. “Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know!” he said, while also promise to keep “a leaderboard for most insanely ***** spending of your tax dollars”. Ramaswamy also responded to the announcement of his appointment on X. “We will not go gently, @elonmusk”, he said, adding an ********* flag emoji. It is not clear how the organization will operate. It could come under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which dictates how external groups that advise the government must operate and be accountable to the public. Federal employees are generally required to disclose their assets and entanglements to ward off any potential conflicts of interest, and to divest significant holdings relating to their work. Because Musk and Ramaswamy would not be formal federal workers, they would not face those requirements or ethical limitations. Musk had pushed for a government efficiency department and has since relentlessly promoted it, emphasizing the acronym for the agency: Doge, a reference to a meme of an expressive Shiba Inu and the name of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, which Musk promotes. Trump said the agency will be conducting a “complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government, and making recommendations for drastic reforms”. The value of dogecoin has more than doubled since election day, tracking a surge in cryptocurrency markets on expectations of a softer regulatory ride under a Trump administration. Shares in Tesla are up about 30% since the election. Trump said their work would conclude by 4 July 2026, adding that a smaller and more efficient government would be a “gift” to the country on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ramaswamy is a wealthy biotech entrepreneur whose first time running for office was for the *********** party nomination last year. After dropping out of the race, he threw his support behind Trump. He told ABC earlier this week that he was having “high-impact discussions” about possible roles in Trump’s cabinet. He also has no government experience, but has pushed for cost-cutting in the corporate sector. After building a stake in the struggling online media firm Buzzfeed, he urged the company in May to cut staff and hire ************* commentators like Tucker Carlson. Musk, speaking to reporters last month, stated a goal of reducing government spending by $2tn. Practically speaking, experts say those cost cuts could result in deregulation and policy changes that would directly impact Musk’s universe of companies, particularly Tesla, SpaceX, X and Neuralink. Adding a government portfolio to Musk’s plate could benefit the market value of his companies and favored businesses such as artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. Equities analyst Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities said in a research note: “It’s clear that Musk will have a massive role in the Trump White House with his increasing reach clearly across many federal agencies.” But Musk’s appointment was criticized by Public Citizen, a progressive consumer rights NGO that challenged several of Trump’s first-term policies. “Musk not only knows nothing about government efficiency and regulation, his own businesses have regularly run afoul of the very rules he will be in position to *******,” co-president Lisa Gilbert said in a statement. Trump had made clear that Musk would likely not hold any kind of full-time position, given his other commitments. “I don’t think I can get him full-time because he’s a little bit busy sending rockets up and all the things he does,” Trump said at a rally in Michigan in September. “He said the waste in this country is crazy. And we’re going to get Elon Musk to be our cost-cutter.” Source link #Trump #selects #Elon #Musk #lead #government #efficiency #department #Donald #Trump Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  11. Which Apple laptop should you buy? Which Apple laptop should you buy? At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Apple announced updates coming to its various operating systems, most of which focus on its own version of AI, dubbed Apple Intelligence. MacBooks will get macOS 15, aka Sequoia, that will support Image Playground, Apple’s image generation tool, and AI composition features that can rewrite, proofread and summarize text in Mail, Notes, Pages and more. But the AI smarts will only be available to Apple laptops with an M1 chip or newer. So if you have an older model (pre-2020), or want the latest chips to get the most out of macOS 15, you might want a new MacBook. This guide will help you pick which one makes the most sense for you. After testing every model Apple makes, we think the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip and 16GB of RAM is the best choice for most people. But there are definitely reasons to consider the cheaper M2 Air and the fully featured Pro laptops. We’ve broken down all the options to help you decide which is the best MacBook for you. Factors to consider when buying a MacBook Compared to PCs, Apple computers tend to have more streamlined specifications. The company has long been known for this simplicity, and the M-series “system-on-a-chip” condenses things even further. It started with the M1 chip, which has since been retired in all models. The M2 and M3 chips can be found in current-generation MacBooks, but the latest Apple silicon, the M4 chip, is only housed in the new iPad Pro. All M-series chips combine, among other technologies, the CPU, graphics card and unified memory (RAM). Apple’s Neural Engine is included too, which is a specialized group of processor cores that handles machine learning tasks such as image analysis and voice recognition. While a unified chip means you have fewer decisions to make when picking a MacBook, there are still a few factors to consider, including specs like the number of CPU cores, amount of RAM, storage capacity, screen size, and, obviously, price. The finish ****** may be a minor consideration, but it’s worth pointing out that the Pro come in just two colors (Silver or Space Gray) but the Air adds two additional hues (Midnight and Starlight). CPU cores Currently the lowest-specced chip in a MacBook is the M2 in the 13-inch MacBook Air. It comes with an 8-core CPU and either an 8- or 10-core GPU. At the other end of the spectrum, the M3 Max chip is built with up to a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. Cores are, in essence, smaller processing units that can handle different tasks simultaneously. Having more of them translates to the computer being able to run multiple programs and applications at once, while also smoothly processing demanding tasks like video editing and high-level gaming. In short, more cores allow for more advanced computing and better performance. But if your processing power needs fall below professional-level gaming and cinematic video and audio editing, getting the highest number of cores is likely overkill — and after all, more cores equals higher cost and more power usage. RAM Your options for RAM, or in Apple’s terminology, Unified memory, varies depending on the chip you choose. The M2 and M3 chips can be paired with 8, 16 or 24GB of RAM. The M3 Pro chip has 18 or 36GB memory options, while the most powerful M3 Max chip supports 48, 64 or a whopping 128GB of RAM. You’ve likely heard the analogy comparing memory to the amount of workspace available on a literal desktop surface, whereas storage is the amount of drawers you have to store projects to work on later. The larger the worktop surface, the more projects you can work on at once. The ******* the drawers, the more you can save for later. More RAM is ideal for people who plan to work in multiple apps at once. And the more demanding each program is, the more RAM will be required. Extra memory can also come in handy if you’re the type who likes to have infinite numbers of tabs open on your browser. If your daily workflow doesn’t involve simultaneously using a vast number of memory-intensive programs, you can save yourself money and buy the RAM configuration that you’re most likely to actually use. For casual users, 8GB may be enough, however, if you can afford an upgrade to 16GB of RAM, we recommend going doing so, as modern browsers tend to be pretty memory-hungry. Investing in more RAM now will give your new MacBook a longer lifespan of reliable use. It’s also important to keep in mind that, unlike most PCs, the RAM in current-model MacBooks is not user-upgradable, so you’ll want to get what you plan on needing at the outset. Photo by Devindra Hardawar/Engadget Storage capacity (SSD) Storage options range from 256GB of SSD for the M2 MacBook Air and 8TB of storage for the MacBook ***** with the M3 Max chip. If you want to rotate between a long roster of game titles or keep lots of high-res videos on hand, you’ll want more storage. If you’re mostly working with browser- and cloud-based applications, you can get away with a smaller-capacity configuration. That said, we recommend springing for 512GB of storage or more, if it’s within your budget. You’ll quickly feel the limits of a 256GB machine as it ages since the operating system alone takes up a good portion of that space. Having 1TB will feel even roomier and allow for more data storage over the life of your laptop. When Apple announced the iPhone 15, the company also announced new iCloud+ storage storage plans, with subscriptions that allow up to 12TB of storage. You could also transfer files to an external storage device. But if you don’t want to pay for a monthly subscription and prefer the convenience of having immediate access to your files, it’s best to get the highest amount of storage space your budget allows for at the outset. Screen size MacBooks come in 13-, 14-, 15- and 16-inch sizes. That might not seem like a huge difference, but, as Engadget’s Nathan Ingraham noted when he reviewed the now-retired 15-inch M2-powered MacBook Air, a larger screen “makes a surprising difference.” That’s especially true if you plan to use your laptop as an all-day productivity machine and won’t be using an external monitor. More space means you can more clearly view side-by-side windows and have a more immersive experience when watching shows or gaming. But screen size is the main factor influencing weight. The 13-inch MacBook Air M2 weighs 2.7 pounds, whereas the top-end 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs 4.8 pounds. If you plan to travel a lot or swap your work locations regularly, a smaller screen will make life easier in the long run. All MacBooks feature IPS LCD panels (in-plane switching, liquid crystal display), which Apple markets as Retina displays. The MacBook Air M1 has a Retina display. A Liquid Retina display comes with the M2 MacBook Air and the Liquid Retina XDR display comes with the 14- and 16-inch MacBook *****. “Liquid” refers to the way the lighted portion of the display “flows” within the contours of the screen, filling the rounded corners and curving around the camera notch. “XDR” is what Apple calls HDR (high dynamic range). Compared to most other laptops, MacBook displays are notably bright, sharp and lush. But one feature worth pointing out is another Apple marketing term: ProMotion. It’s the company’s term to describe a screen with a higher, 120Hz refresh rate, which results in smoother scrolling and more fluid-looking graphics. Only the 14- and 16-inch MacBook ***** offer ProMotion; the other models max out at 60Hz, which is perfectly fine for everyday browsing and typical workdays. But if you want buttery-smooth motion from your display, you’ll have to shell out more money for an upgrade. Price When the MacBook Air M3 came out, Apple dropped the price of the base-model, 13-inch, M2-powered Air with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. With a $999 starting price, it’s now the least expensive new MacBook you can get. Alternatively, you can spend up to $7,199 for the 16-inch MacBook Pro M3 Max with 128GB of RAM and 8TB of storage. Chip type, screen size, memory and storage capacity all influence the final price, which is why guides like this can help you determine just what you need (and what you don’t) so you can get the most cost-effective machine for you. We recommend the MacBook Air M3 for most people, the MacBook Air M2 for students and those on a budget, and the 14- or 16-inch MacBook ***** for professionals. If you have extra money to spare once you’ve picked your machine, we recommend upgrading to at least 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage to make your machine as future-proof as possible. Best MacBooks Photo by Devindra Hardawar / Engadget Screen size: 13” | Processor: M3 chip, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine | Storage capacity (SSD): 256GB | Memory: 8GB | Battery life: Up to 18 hours | Ports: MagSafe 3 charging, 3.5 mm jack, 2 x Thunderbolt/USB4 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Read our full Apple MacBook Air (M3, 2024) review Our former pick for the best laptop in this buying guide was the Apple MacBook Air with the M2 chip. The new M3-enabled MacBook Air isn’t a huge change from its predecessor — and that’s a good thing. Our laptop expert Devindra Hardawar reviewed the new MacBook Air and confirmed that the latest MacBook Air builds on everything the M2 got right: it has a great screen and full sound in a thin and lightweight aluminum unibody that feels premium. With the addition of the M3 chip, the performance is now more impressive, achieving even higher scores in our benchmark testing. There’s also support for Wi-Fi 6E in the new model, plus the Air can now handle two external displays instead of one, but only with the laptop lid closed. You’ll connect the extra screen via one of the two USB-C ports (both of which support the Thunderbolt/USB4 standard). Only the Pro models have an HDMI port. The latest Air maintains the overall design of the previous model, with a uniformly thin profile (the wedge shape is officially gone from Apple’s lineup now that the M1 MacBook Air has been discontinued). Apple claims a long battery life with 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing, and we can confirm that you’ll get significantly more than a single workday before you need to grab your charger. In Devindra’s tests, the machine dropped to 40 percent after ten straight hours playing fullscreen 4K video at full brightness. Apple released both the M3-powered 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air simultaneously. We think the 13-inch model has the best combination of portability and performance. It weighs just 2.7 pounds and easily slips into a bag to take on the road. However, the 15-inch version may be worth it for those who constantly have dozens of windows open at once or dabble in media editing — though editing ***** should probably opt for a MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro chip. The 15-inch model is also ideal for anyone dealing with visual impairment and would like an easier-to-read screen. As for the screen itself, the 13-inch option has a Liquid Retina display with 2,560 x 1,664 resolution at 224 pixels per inch. That’s exactly the same as the M2 Air — but again, Apple didn’t mess with a good thing, sticking with a great-looking display that’s bright enough to use outside in sunlight. It still doesn’t have ProMotion, which means the refresh rate is limited to 60Hz. If you need that silky-smooth scrolling, you’ll have to bump up to a MacBook Pro. To get the most out of the new chip, we recommend upgrading to 16GB of RAM. That will enable not just a full day of productivity, it’ll also let you play more serious games. Devindra was able to play both ***** of P in 1080p+ and the director’s cut of ****** Stranding with smooth graphics at good resolutions — though he did note that you can’t crank up the graphics settings too high. The speakers are best-in-class and the webcam is great for video conferencing — particularly with Apple’s background blurring and brightness adjustments. Finally, the responsive keyboard and smooth trackpad are the ideal interface for what adds up to be a great computer. ***** Lightweight yet sturdy design Fast performance from the M3 chip Excellent speakers, keyboard and trackpac Bright and clear screen ***** No USB-C on the right side Limited to 60Hz refresh rate $898 at Amazon Photo by Devindra Hardawar / Engadget Processor: M2 chip, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine | Storage capacity (SSD): 256GB | Memory: 8GB | Battery life: Up to 18 hours | Ports: MagSafe 3 charging, 3.5 mm jack, 2 x Thunderbolt/USB 4 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 Read our full Apple MacBook Air (M2, 2022) review Before the release of the M3-enabled MacBook Air, the MacBook Air M2 was our pick for the best Apple laptop you can buy. Now it’s an extremely capable budget pick starting at $999 — the same list price as the now-retired M1 MacBook Air. In his original M2 Air review, Devindra called it a “near-perfect Mac,” awarding it a high score of 96. This model received a complete refresh in 2022, and since the M3 is largely the same as the M2 from a design perspective, Engadget’s Dan Cooper says that the best thing about the new M3 Air may be the price drop it ushered in for the M2 model. The M2’s gorgeous 13.6-inch Liquid Retina screen can hit up to 500 nits of brightness, making it easy to use outside. The 60Hz refresh rate doesn’t deliver the butter-smooth scrolling you get on MacBook Pro models, but it’s still lovely. The quad speaker array pumps out great sound, filling a room at max volume without distortion, and the three-mic array does a good job of picking up your voice for video calls. The 1080p webcam is an improvement over previous generations, and it even beats our top Windows laptop, Dell’s XPS 13 Plus, which still sports a 720p camera. The M2 Air hangs on to its 3.5mm headphone jack and includes two USB-C Thunderbolt ports, for accessories like an external display, plus a MagSafe connector. The battery life is ample, lasting 16 hours and 30 minutes in our rundown test, which should be more than sufficient for a day (or two) of work. The M2 processor finally gave the Air enough speed to play games, particularly those from Apple Arcade. Streaming and cloud gaming work well through Safari, and you’ll find a handful of compatible titles on Steam. However, if gaming is your main goal, you may want to upgrade to an M3 model, or go outside Apple’s offerings all together as not every AAA release is natively compatible with macOS. Our review unit performed well in benchmark tests, beating the Air M1 and nearly matching the performance of the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2. It’s a fanless system which means it’s quiet, but to keep things cool, the CPU does have to be throttled occasionally. Overall, it’s an excellent choice for everyday use and can handle most tasks. Of course, if you’re planning on doing intensive video editing, you’ll likely want something more powerful, such as the MacBook Pro M3, but the Air is an affordable, multipurpose, ultraportable laptop. For $999 you get the M2 chip with an 8-Core GPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. We did notice better performance when the RAM was upped to 16GB, but if you’re trying to keep things under $1,000, the base model is still plenty capable for everyday productivity. You can also look into a refurbished model, which you can buy directly from Apple with a year-long warranty. The 15-inch MacBook Air M2 is no longer officially part of Apple’s lineup, but many retailers still have some backstock of the larger model, and again, taking advantage of refurbished offers is a good way to go in this case. In his review, Engadget’s Nate Ingraham said the extra couple inches on the 15-inch screen made a surprising difference. ***** Bright and colorful screen Clear and full sound Thin and light design Speedy performance for everyday use ***** Refresh rate only 60Hz Webcam image is drab $749 at Amazon Photo by Devindra Hardawar / Engadget Processor: M4 chip | Storage capacity (SSD): Up to 8TB | Memory: Up to 128GB | Battery life: Up to 24 hours | Ports: HDMI, 3.5mm headphone jack, MagSafe 3, 3x Thunderbolt 5, SDXC card slo | Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Read our 14-inch and 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro (M4, 2024) review Apple’s latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook ***** may not look any different, but under the hood they’re entirely new beasts thanks to Apple’s M4 chips. The $1,599 14-inch model is a far better deal than before too, since it now includes 16GB of RAM standard and it has three USB-C connections instead of just two. While the M4 chip is a decent step up from the M3, the M4 Pro wowed us with Geekbench and Cinebench scores that we’ve never seen before. The Pro model’s multithreaded performance is practically the same as two competing Windows laptops put together! (We didn’t test the M4 Max, but it’s most likely another stunner.) Beyond the new chips, the MacBook ***** sport slightly brighter screens for SDR content (helpful for working in sunlight), as well as a big webcam upgrade to 12MP, instead of just 1080p. So, for the first time, the MacBook ***** can use Apple’s Center Stage to keep you in frame during video chats, as well as Desk View. These MacBook ***** also deliver the same excellent keyboard and super smooth trackpad that we’ve loved over the last few years. They also have all the ports you need, including three USB-C, HDMI, 3.5mm jack and an SD card reader. The M4 Pro and M4 Max chips also bring along Thunderbolt 5 for faster connections to external accessories. As for battery life, both systems lasted over 30 hours in our video rundown test, and they could easily run for multiple workdays without a recharge. — Devindra Hardawar, Senior Reporter ***** Fast M4 chips Brighter display Sharp 12MP Center Stage webcam Thunderbolt 5 with M4 Pro/Max Long battery life $1,549 at Amazon MacBook FAQs What’s the difference between MacBook Air and Pro? The MacBook Air comes with a standard M3 or M2 chip. MacBook Pro models have the option of more powerful M3 Pro or M3 Max chips. The Pro has a higher resolution screen with a higher peak brightness that supports XDR (extreme dynamic range). The battery life on most Pro models is longer than on the Air models. Pro models also have more ports and more speakers. In short, the MacBook Air is aimed at everyday users looking for good productivity and entertainment capabilities, while Pro models are aimed at professionals who need a high-performance computer. What’s the difference between macOS and Windows? MacOS is the operating system developed by Apple and used in all of its desktop and laptop computers. It can only be found in hardware made by Apple including MacBooks and iMacs. Microsoft’s Windows operating system can be found in the company’s own Surface laptops as well as computers made by a wide array of manufacturers, like Acer, Asus, Dell and Razer. 13. Slack Is Reportedly Working On an AI-Powered File Summary Feature Slack Is Reportedly Working On an AI-Powered File Summary Feature Slack, the work management and productivity platform, is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature. As per a report, the new feature is called AI file summary, and it can summarise documents uploaded to the platform. The new feature is said to be able to summarise text-heavy files to help users quickly get a gist of the topic. This is an under-development feature, so it might not be visible to current users. Further, once the feature is released for users, it might be limited to users with a paid subscription to Slack and the AI add-on. Slack Reportedly Working on AI File Summary Feature An Android Authority report detailed the under-development feature during an application package kit (APK) teardown process. The publication found evidence of the feature in the recent Slack app for Android version 24-10-50-0. Several strings of code were reportedly unearthed that not only highlighted the functionality of the feature but also listed its limitations. Based on the strings, it appears the AI feature could be offered as a separate section on the platform, where users can upload files and get a quick summary of it. These summaries are said to be sharable and can be seen when the file is forwarded to another conversation. However, one string reportedly also highlights that users can choose to disable the summary when sharing a file. The strings reportedly also highlighted that the AI File Summary feature on Slack will not work if the file size is too large or if there is not enough text to summarise. At present, the defined limits for these margins are not known. Additionally, another string reportedly revealed that only certain file formats will be supported, and password-protected files will not be summarised. Speculatively, it can be said that PDF, Word, and Text formats could be supported initially. Further, the publication was able to retrieve more strings with the “AI file summary” tag, which highlighted more functionalities as well as the feedback system that might be implemented. For instance, Slack says that users can remove and delete the AI-generated summary from file details if it is not satisfactory. However, this process is said to be irreversible. Users can reportedly offer feedback to Slack on how well the feature is working. Some of the things they can choose, based on the strings, include feedback such as whether the information was accurate or inaccurate, whether it included too much or too little detail, and whether the layout was difficult or easy to understand. 16. Meta to Offer Less Personalised Ads in Europe to Appease Regulators Meta to Offer Less Personalised Ads in Europe to Appease Regulators Meta Platforms plans to offer Instagram and Facebook users in Europe the option to receive “less personalised ads,” the tech giant announced on Tuesday, in an effort to allay regulators’ mounting concerns. The Menlo Park, California-based company said it is implementing these changes in response to demands from EU regulators. Over the coming weeks, people in the EU who use the company’s social media platforms for free with ads will be able to choose to see ads based on what Meta calls “context”- content that a user sees during a particular session on the platforms. These ads will also target users based on age, gender, and location, with some being unskippable for a few seconds. Meta also plans to reduce the price of ad-free subscriptions by about 40 percent for ********* users. This move comes as ********* regulators intensify efforts to curb Big Tech’s power and level the playing field for smaller firms, including through the landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA) which came into force earlier this year. “The new model introduced by Meta is under Meta’s sole responsibility, and it is neither endorsed by nor agreed with the Commission. It is ********** to speculate about the impact on the pending non-compliance proceedings,” a spokesperson for the EU told Reuters. “Our objective is to bring Meta to full and effective compliance in this matter as soon as possible.” Last month, Europe’s top court ruled that Meta must restrict the use of personal data harvested from Facebook for targeted advertising, supporting privacy activist Max Schrems. “While the solution still needs to be assessed, we welcome the fact that an important platform announces that it will offer a new choice for free with less detailed profiling for advertising,” Anu Talus, chair of the EU’s privacy watchdog – the ********* Data Protection Board- said in a statement. Microsoft to End Support for Windows Mail, Calendar and People Apps This Year to Prioritise Outlook Microsoft to End Support for Windows Mail, Calendar and People Apps This Year to Prioritise Outlook Microsoft has announced that it will end support for Mail, Calendar, and People apps for Windows by the end of the year. It is migrating users to the new Outlook for Windows app, where they will be able to access their local emails, calendar events, and stored contacts on a single platform — services previously available on three separate apps. The Redmond-based technology giant is also planning to replace the desktop version of Outlook with the web-based version. Microsoft Ends Support for Apps In a blog post, Microsoft highlighted that it wants users to use its Outlook app, which comes with a simplified design and expansive list of features. Thus, the tech giant will no longer support apps such as Mail, Calendar, and People from December 31 onwards. It says users who don’t move to the new platform “will no longer be able to send and receive email using Windows Mail and Calendar.” However, local emails, calendar events, and contacts stored in Mail, Calendar, and People will remain exportable. Additionally, users who do not wish to use the new app will have a choice of going back to the Windows Mail and Calendar platforms. The company adds that most email accounts, including Outlook, Hotmail, work, and school, will be supported by the new app. Furthermore, it also includes support for third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud via the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). Notably, Outlook for Windows was available in the preview stage until August, when Microsoft launched it globally for users. It comes pre-installed on Windows devices running Windows 11, version 23H2 or higher. Once signed in, Outlook will launch into the account users have set as their default send account. The app allows users to see their various accounts and calendars in one view. They can also toggle between accounts to see their emails and contacts. It also bundles artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, such as intelligent spelling and grammar checks, AI writing tools, and Copilot features. Russia’s Medvedev calls for overhaul of ATP calendar Russia’s Medvedev calls for overhaul of ATP calendar World No.4 Daniil Medvedev says the ATP Tour calendar needs to be refocused around the grand slams and Masters 1000 events with the lower-tier ATP 250 tournaments moved to an optional slot later in the year. Several players have voiced concerns over the calendar, with four-times grand slam winner Carlos Alcaraz saying the tight schedule makes it difficult to stay motivated throughout the year and increases the risk of injuries. From next season, seven of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events will be held across 12 days, a decision which was criticised by Stefanos Tsitsipas last week. “This year I only tried to play big tournaments,” Medvedev told reporters after his win over Australia’s Alex De Minaur at the ATP Finals on Tuesday. “I think there should be more *******, important tournaments, which should be like, ‘Okay, these are the tournaments where we define who is going to be top 10, like Masters 1000.’ “You play good in them, you will be there. The schedule should somehow be around them.” Reuters has contacted the ATP Tour for comment. Medvedev suggested staging the top tournaments earlier in the year, adding: “Then you put all the 250s after for people that want to continue playing. “If you’re good enough, you finish the season in whatever, October, play in Masters. Doesn’t matter. Don’t count the tournaments after. “If you still feel like you need more points for *********** Open or more matches, you do it after.” Source link #Russias #Medvedev #calls #overhaul #ATP #calendar Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  21. Analysis-India’s middle class tightens its belt, squeezed by food inflation Analysis-India’s middle class tightens its belt, squeezed by food inflation By Praveen Paramasivam and Shivangi Acharya CHENNAI/NEW DELHI – India’s city dwellers are cutting spending on everything from cookies to fast food as persistently high inflation squeezes middle class budgets, threatening the country’s brisk economic growth. Slowing urban spending over the past three to four months has not only hurt the earnings of largest consumer goods firms, it has raised questions about the structural nature of India’s long-term economic success. Since the end of the pandemic, India’s economic growth has been driven in large part by urban consumption, however, that now seems to be changing. “There is a top end – the people with money are spending like that is going out of style,” Nestle India Chairman Suresh Narayanan said. “There used to be a middle segment, which used to be the segment that most of us fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) firms used to operate in, which is the middle class of the country, that seems to be shrinking.” Nestle India, which makes Kit Kats and other well-known goods, reported its first quarterly revenue drop since the COVID-hit June quarter in 2020. While there is no officially defined income bracket for Indian middle class households, they are broadly estimated to account for a third of India’s 1.4 billion people. They are considered a key demographic both economically and politically, with middle class frustration seen as a significant factor behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s weaker election performance this year. Asia’s third-largest economy is expected to expand 7.2% in the financial year ending March 2025, the fastest among its major peers. Belying those rosy projections, however, are signs of a sharp slowdown in the household sector. Indian urban consumption hit a two-year low this month, according to an index published by Citibank that captures indicators such as airline bookings, fuel sales and wages. “While some of the fall could be temporary, the key macro drivers remain unfavourable,” Citi’s chief India economist Samiran Chakraborty said. Growth in inflation-adjusted wage costs for listed Indian firms – a proxy for earnings of urban Indians – has remained below 2% for all the three quarters of 2024, well below the 10-year average of 4.4%, data from Citi showed. Chakraborty cites this as a key factor impacting urban consumption, along with declining savings and tighter rules for personal loans. Headline inflation has averaged 5% over the past 12 months, but food inflation has held above 8% as weather shocks elevated prices of vegetables, cereals and other essential foods. In October, retail inflation hit a 14-month high of 6.2% while food prices jumped to 10.9%. Story Continues Anecdotal data suggests retail sales rose close to 15% year-on-year during the 2024 festive season, which runs from August to November, Nomura said in a note last week, about half last year’s pace. “During this festival season, we have not spent at all,” said Rajwanti Dahiya, 60, who survives on her husband’s monthly pension of 30,000 Indian rupees ($356.76). “Savings are low, barely there.” A ‘SHRINKING’ MIDDLE India’s central bank expects 7.2% GDP growth for the fiscal year ending March 2025 on the back of improved rural demand and a strong services sector. Higher government investment could also support demand, said Rahul Bajoria, head of India and ASEAN economic research at Bank of America. “If government spending kicks in, that probably does have some multiplier effects on private consumption spending as well,” said Bajoria, who expects GDP growth at 6.8% in the current financial year. Some are less optimistic with Citi and IDFC First Bank economists expecting GDP growth in the July-September quarter to miss the central bank’s projected 7%, weighed by slower urban consumption. That pessimism has hit consumer stocks with the Nifty FMCG index declining 13% since Oct. 1, compared with a 7.4% drop in the benchmark Nifty 50. Of the FMCG index’s 15 constituent firms, only one reported a pickup in sales volume growth in the September quarter. Consumers in large cities are swapping branded items from hair oil to tea for cheaper unbranded alternatives, reflected in the first sales volume decline in 11 quarters for the foods and refreshment group at Hindustan Unilever. “We see the growth in big city standing down, although in smaller cities and in rural the growth continues to be good,” Hindustan Unilever chief executive Rohit Jawa said last month, after reporting lower than expected earnings. Consumers are also cutting back on dining out. Fast-food chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut and KFC posted same-store sales declines, earnings showed. While people are still coming, they are choosing cheaper meals, Rajeev Varman, CEO at Burger King operator Restaurant Brands Asia said after posting a 3% drop in quarterly same-store sales. “We prefer budget-friendly stores that give good deals and discounts to manage our monthly expenditure,” said 37-year old Avinash Crasto, a Mumbai marketing and sales executive who has a family of four and identifies as middle class. 24. Premier Roger Cook declares PM must decide on election date swap by February Premier Roger Cook declares PM must decide on election date swap by February Premier Roger Cook has declared the Prime Minister has until February to set or forget about March 8 as a potential date for the Federal Election. Anthony Albanese’s refusal to rule out March 8 — the date West Australians are due to head to the polls — has fuelled speculation after Mr Cook revealed he sought legal advice on shifting the fixed March 8 election date over a looming federal poll. On Wednesday, Mr Cook maintained that he hadn’t been told whether a clash was likely. “Quite frankly, only the Prime Minister can make that decision,” Mr Cook said on Wednesday. He described a conversation about a potential clash with Mr Albanese as “very theoretical”, insisting that “ultimately, the decision is up to him”. “I know that in Western Australia, we’ll have an election on the eighth of March unless we don’t . . . it’s just out of our hands.” Mr Cook said a decision would need to be made by the first week of February for WA to delay, noting the Federal Government had to provide four weeks notice by going to the Governor-General. “That will be the opportunity for us to understand if there’s going to be any impact . . . it’s just a matter of maths,” he added. Mr Albanese, who must call an election before the middle of May, has been under increasing pressure to set the date after Mr Cook revealed he sought legal advice at The West ***********’s Leadership Matters forum this week. Camera IconFormer WA Premier Colin Barnett Credit: Michael Wilson/The West *********** Former WA Premier Colin Barnett, who fixed the election date in 2009 on the second Saturday in March every four years, said provisions to shift the date were only written in to cover the event of writs being issued for a Federal campaign. “That’s only when a Federal election is called, not just to give Mr Albanese political options as to when he calls for the election,” the former ******** premier said. “If that’s happening, you can rightly accuse Mr Albanese and Mr Cook of putting Labor’s political interest ahead of the formal election process in Western Australia. “That’s entirely improper. It just works against a democracy. It means that the Labor Party manipulates election day.” Mr Barnett said the Prime Minister would get a strong negative reaction from the WA public if he called the election over the top of the State campaign, comparing it to the decision by his predecessor Alan Carpenter to call the 2008 election six months early. The WA Electoral Commission has confirmed March 8 would become an “excluded day” if it was set as the Federal election date. Section 394 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act states “no election, referendum or vote” of a State or Territory can be held on the same day as a Federal election without the authority of the Governor-General. The State poll can only be delayed one week until March 15 unless the Opposition Leader agrees to a further one-week delay under “extraordinary circumstances”. 25. The Election Proved Something Painful About Gen Z. It’s Worse Than We Thought. The Election Proved Something Painful About Gen Z. It’s Worse Than We Thought. The youth will not save us. It will be weeks—months!—before the Democratic Party finishes the autopsy of this destroyed coalition, but one thing is already clear: Gen Z, particularly Gen Z men, is a whole lot more right-leaning than a lot of us thought. A Tufts University analysis of voter surveys found that 56 percent of men between the ages of 18 and 29 voted for Trump. Biden won that same demographic by 6 points last cycle. Other exit-poll analyses depict a more complicated picture, with young people voting for each candidate at relatively equal margins, but that is still a far cry from the overwhelming numbers put up by young people for Obama, Kerry, and Gore. It was a rude awakening for many Democrats. The assumptions that they long held about the denizens of America’s future—that they would reflexively vote left, no matter what—were simply not true in 2024. And for some millennials, that amounts to a betrayal. “Gen z gotta be the worst generation of all time,” wrote one aggrieved Kamala backer on Twitter, in the aftermath of her defeat. “Can’t read, can’t write, can’t add, can’t *****, can’t joke, can’t dance, can’t dress, can’t drink, can’t smoke, can’t not elect a fascist conman.” Others took a slightly different tack, adopting the language of generational warfare—targeting, for the first time, the zoomers in their wake, rather than the boomers in the distance. “Crazy how Millennials were the only ones to learn how to use computers and we apparently are also the only ones who learned to see through disinformation,” added Dylan, an additional member of the social media commentariat, clearly horrified by the disfiguration of his caucus. A third poster put it more succinctly: “Zoomers going right is one of the most depressing things about this election. … For now it’s hard to feel like we aren’t gonna be locked in ***** for the rest of our lives.” It went on and on like this in the hours after Trump’s second ascendancy. There is always a search for a scapegoat after a decisive political defeat, because in those moments, every decision a losing candidate made is naturally magnified as the reason for their downfall. And it is true that the media has long believed that the youngest voters in the country would naturally be just as progressive as their predecessors. Gen Z will “change the world,” said Time in 2018, while a Newsweek contributor claimed that the up-and-coming generation was “uniquely dangerous to Republicans.” That optimism was obviously misplaced. The ************* movement, at least within its terminally online meme-wars wing, has largely become the party of men who feel as though they’ve been marginalized by a society turned against them. And that includes young men. (A tweet last week by Stephen Miller, one of the wormiest members of the first Trump regime, calling Zyn-puckered boys to the polls en masse was a particularly unseemly omen of what was to come.) But frankly, from my vantage point, this realignment hasn’t taught me anything I didn’t already know about young people—and it especially hasn’t caused me to believe that Gen Z is uniquely corroded or propagandized or even all that materially different from the fresh-faced millennials we once were. The election of Trump reminds me that members of the youth, regardless of generation, are idealistic, impulsive, and uniquely susceptible to messaging that heralds them as a force that can change the world. That was certainly true when I watched Obama ***** out McCain under the aegis of the artist Stephen Fairey. And I imagine that that was also true of the boys mainlining a noxious YouTube diet of Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro, who have drilled into them the idea that a vote for Trump is a vote for an assertion of their dignity—that they may remake America in their image, that the world will once again lie at their feet. It is a grim, faulty promise, but a promise nonetheless. What exactly did the Harris campaign promise those same young men? Progressive youth voters have made clear their aversion to the brutal destruction in Gaza, while the incumbent rebuffed them, over and over again, with the status quo. The same could be said of many of the most popular causes of the 2020 primary: a minimum-wage increase and a more sensible health care apparatus, both of which were championed by Bernie Sanders, who—sorry, it must be said—received strong backing among the exact same constituencies from which Harris hemorrhaged votes. Gen Z women were clearly moved by Harris’ staunch support for ********* rights—they voted for her at a 58 percent clip, according to Tufts—but she waited until the final weeks of the campaign to go to bat for legalized recreational **********. Same with the Democratic PACs that attempted to exploit the frighteningly puritanical antiporn, antipleasure, and antisex fringes of the Trump coalition that have grown only more curdled and repellent in their four years out of power. It’s called a culture war for a reason. And at every turn, Harris didn’t seem eager to ****** it. There’s precedent for all of this. Reagan won the youth vote. So did Nixon. Trump’s claiming the mantle is hardly surprising. Those Republicans of yore succeeded in their party’s expansion by presenting a concrete set of policies to sway the insurgent generation to their side. (Nixon, for example, ran on ending military conscription before the 1972 election; a broad swath of college kids responded by deserting the Democratic nominee, George McGovern.) The calculus of the Trump camp is much darker—and more convoluted. It evokes a vision of America in which the perceived subjugation of young men is the fault of a ******** gender agenda and unchecked immigration, the latter of which can be contained only by mass deportation and, I guess, the crypto industry. But that is far from a sturdy monolith. It can, and should, be easily conquered. All it takes is a platform that authentically offers something—anything—to youth voters. As they’ve proved, time and time again, they’ll listen. Source link #Election #Proved #Painful #Gen #Worse #Thought Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
