Trump’s appointees have criticized Trudeau, Canada’s border security – National Trump’s appointees have criticized Trudeau, Canada’s border security – National Donald Trump’s second administration is filling up with some of his most loyal supporters and many of the people landing top jobs have been critical of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and security at Canada’s border. 3. Why is Elon Musk becoming Donald Trump’s efficiency adviser? Why is Elon Musk becoming Donald Trump’s efficiency adviser? Getty Images Billionaire Elon Musk has been tasked with leading incoming President Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). In a statement on social media, the US president-elect said Musk – along with former *********** presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy – would “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies”. It is a role that the tech entrepreneur has arguably prepared for through his business leadership, and one he has spent months arguing for. But it is also one that is expected to garner him influence over government policy – and the regulatory environment his enterprises exist in. Musk told a Trump rally in October that he believed the US government’s budget could be reduced by “at least” $2tn from around $6.5tn. He has also frequently suggested the number of government employees could be significantly reduced. Ramaswamy meanwhile has put forward plans to scrap a number of federal departments including the Department of Education, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI. From Twitter to pared-down X The way Musk has run his own firms may hint at what Americans can expect when he begins attempting to slash government waste. In October 2022, Musk took over social media platform Twitter – which he rebranded as X – in a $44bn (£38.1bn) deal. He said he had decided to buy the site so he could remove its policies of moderating content and banning users who had deemed to have violated its rules on hate speech and disinformation. Among the users he reinstated was Trump, who had been banned following the Capitol riot in January 2021 after continuing to claim the 2020 election had been rigged against him. Musk’s takeover saw ******** changes to the company. He reduced X’s workforce from around 8,000 to 1,500. In April 2023, he told the BBC that his reasoning for doing so was that “if the whole ship sinks, then nobody’s got a job”. Facing a mass exodus of advertisers over his relaxation of the platform’s user speech policies, the entrepreneur also monetised elements of the site to raise revenue. He turned its blue ticks – which previously denoted that a high-profile account was bona fide – into a subscription model, and tied advertising payments to “verified” users to the number of interactions they receive. Musk also tied interactions to these users’ prominence, meaning their posts that did well were more likely to be seen by other users. And he introduced Grok, a paid-for artificial intelligence chatbot that could be used to generate content. But these changes had some unintended consequences. X has now given gold or silver ticks to brands and official accounts to avoid them being confused with fakes after several, including the BBC, opted not to pay for them – effectively meaning blue ticks only signify that an account is paid-for. Incentivising users with a share of advertising revenues also gave an avenue for so-called **** farms to make money by posting auto-generated content to gain more interactions. Mr Musk has said his team has repeatedly purged **** accounts. Critics argue his changes have given prominence to hate-speech and misinformation – though he has argued the site is politically neutral. “As a serial entrepreneur, Musk has been relentless in trying to improve institutional efficiency at his own enterprises, most notably, Tesla and X,” says Thomas Gift, a professor of US politics at University College London. He adds that though Musk’s primary role will be “slashing through the thicket of red tape that is the US federal government”, his position will also give him influence in the new administration. “While his role in the Department of Government Efficiency will be a more informal one, there’s no doubt that he’s got Trump ear – at least for the moment.” Railing against regulation Mr Musk’s calls for a Doge are themselves a reference to a meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog which then gave its name to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, both of which have been frequently referred to by Elon Musk online. But the calls may come in part from frustrations he has had with his other business ventures: electric vehicle company Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX. Tesla has repeatedly been accused by the US government of trying to prevent its workers unionising – which in some cases can be against the law. Tesla is one of 13 car manufacturers where the auto workers’ union is not recognised. Musk – who has an estimated net worth of $290bn (£228bn) – has previously said he is “not against all unions”, but that the auto workers’ union “has a track record of destroying productivity so a company can’t compete”. In September Musk threatened to sue the Federal Aviation Administration over its plans to fine his SpaceX company $633,000 for alleged license infringements related to some of its rocket launches from Cape Canaveral in Florida. He accused the agency of “regulatory overreach”. He has also repeatedly said he wants to colonise Mars, and SpaceX’s Starship programme is an attempt to make that possible. But in September, he wrote that this was only a possibility “so long as it is not smothered by bureaucracy” and claimed DOGE was “the only path to extending life beyond Earth”. So is part of his motivation for taking on the role his various US-based business interests? “There’s no doubt that Musk has significant vested interests in the US regulatory landscape as a result of his many business enterprises,” says Prof Gift. “At the same time, it’s hard to make the case that this is the only impetus driving him. “Musk has undertaken huge personal and political risks in coming out for Trump, and many of his activities and rhetoric seem to reflect an individual ideologically committed to causes he believes in.” Reuters Elon Musk says cutting red tape is “the only path” to colonsing other planets Reward for loyalty Musk donated a reported $200m (£157m) to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, and appeared to speak at several of his rallies. As the South ********-born billionaire is not a natural-born citizen, he cannot become president – something that has frustrated other famous faces who became involved in politics in the past. But Musk can have an influence on US policy, and Trump will have a sympathetic adviser to call upon. “Trump is looking to surround himself with loyalists in his new administration, and there’s no one who’s been more loyal than Musk since he announced his endorsement for Trump,” says Prof Gift. “Not only did Musk go ‘all in’ in supporting Trump personally and financially during the campaign, but he’s also evolved into a trusted adviser on topics as diverse as technology policy to the war in Ukraine.” In an early sign of the influence the tech entrepreneur may be rewarded with for his loyalty, Mr Musk was party to a call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following the election. The war in Ukraine will be a major foreign policy concern when Trump takes office. Source link #Elon #Musk #Donald #Trumps #efficiency #adviser Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  6. Indian megastar Virat Kohli emerges in Perth for first hit ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy series Indian megastar Virat Kohli emerges in Perth for first hit ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy series After landing in Perth and spending two days under cover, the man billions of cricket fans have been waiting for has finally made his first appearance. Virat Kohli, the Indian batting **** adored by fans in his home country, trained with teammates for the first time as part of their top-secret camp at the WACA Ground. Supporters who got wind of the session climbed trees and even brought their own ladders to just catch a glimpse of their hero ahead of what will almost certainly be his final Test series in Australia. Amid the massive intrigue surrounding India’s arrival in Perth — with even Cricket Australia officials kept in the dark — Kohli had been nowhere to be seen just over a week out from the opening day of the West Test on November 22. But the 36-year-old, who has brought his Bollywood-star wife Anushka Sharma and children Vamika and Akaay Down Under, was spotted outside the team’s hotel for the first time on Wednesday morning. He was then the first man to pad up at India’s first official training session, however, the Indian megastar gave the net star opening bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj were bowling in a wide berth to start. 8. Microplastics Could Be Changing Earth’s Climate, Reveals New Study Microplastics Could Be Changing Earth’s Climate, Reveals New Study Scientists at Penn State University have identified that microplastics present in the atmosphere could be influencing the Earth’s climate. A study published in Environmental Science and Technology: Air reveals that these tiny plastic particles may act as ice nucleating agents within clouds, impacting precipitation, weather, and possibly even aviation. Although the precise effects remain unclear, the findings highlight the possibility of microplastics playing an underestimated role in climate dynamics. Microplastics Detected in Remote and Extreme Locations As per the study, Microplastics—particles less than five millimetres in size—have been found globally, from deep ocean trenches to high-altitude clouds. Penn State’s research now adds that airborne microplastics, found even in remote mountain regions, may contribute to climate change by altering cloud structures. Professor Miriam Freedman, a senior author and chemistry professor at Penn State, stated that the study underscores the need to understand microplastics’ interactions with the atmospheric system, especially in cloud formation processes. Laboratory Analysis Reveals Microplastic Behaviour in Ice Formation The study further mentions that in the experiments, the research team examined how four types of microplastics—low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (****)—affect ice formation. The particles were reported to suspended in water droplets and cooled, revealing that microplastic-laden droplets froze at higher temperatures compared to those without. Lead author Heidi Busse, a Penn State graduate researcher, reported that the presence of microplastics allowed freezing at up to 10 degrees warmer, signifying that such particles could promote cloud ice nucleation at milder temperatures. Implications for Climate Patterns and Precipitation While the full impact of microplastics on climate ******** uncertain, Dr. Freedman suggests they may alter precipitation patterns by influencing cloud properties. In areas with high microplastic levels, water dispersal among many particles could result in smaller droplets, delaying rainfall but potentially leading to heavier precipitation once droplets coalesce. Environmental Ageing and Future Research Directions Environmental factors, such as exposure to sunlight and atmospheric chemicals, also appear to affect microplastics’ ice-forming potential, with aged PVC showing increased nucleation ability. Future research will focus on additives in plastics, which could reveal further effects on Earth’s climate. 13. Mortgage demand stalls as financial markets digest Trump presidency Mortgage demand stalls as financial markets digest Trump presidency Residential homes in Discovery Bay, California, US, on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024. Mortgage rates in the US increased to the highest level since July. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Mortgage rates continued to climb last week as investors considered the future of the economy under a Trump presidency. The mortgage market basically took a breather. Total application volume was essentially flat, rising just 0.5% last week, compared with the previous one, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. While tiny, the increase marked the first rise in overall demand in seven weeks. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances of $766,550 or less increased to 6.86% from 6.81%, with points decreasing to 0.60 from 0.68, including the origination fee, for loans with a 20% down payment. “Mortgage rates continued to increase last week, driven by higher Treasury yields as financial markets digested the likely impacts of a Trump presidency,” said Joel Kan, the Mortgage Bankers Association’s deputy chief economist. “The Federal Reserve’s 25-basis-point rate cut was already anticipated and did little to move the markets.” Applications to refinance a home loan, which are most sensitive to weekly moves in interest rates, fell 2% for the week to the lowest level since May. They were, however, 43% higher than the same week one year ago. Last year at that time, mortgage rates were 75 basis points higher. Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home rose 2% for the week and were 1% higher than the same week one year ago. Homebuyers may be looking at lower rates than last year, but they are also seeing higher home prices. Meanwhile, the supply of homes for ***** ******** lean. Kan noted that applications for loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs helped drive stronger purchase activity, increasing 3% and 9%, respectively. “FHA mortgage rates bucked the overall trend and were lower over the week, which likely helped some borrowers,” Kan said. “Conventional purchase applications were also up slightly.” Mortgage rates moved higher this Tuesday; the bond market was closed Monday for the Veterans Day holiday. “The market continues to work through election-related volatility,” wrote Matthew Graham, chief operating officer at Mortgage News Daily. “That involves a complex set of considerations. Some of them have to do with actual expectations for changes in fiscal policy in the coming years. Some of the considerations are as simple as traders going through the process of exiting (and re-setting) trading positions heading into the election.” Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO Source link #Mortgage #demand #stalls #financial #markets #digest #Trump #presidency Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  15. Málaga evacuates thousands as more flood alerts issued Málaga evacuates thousands as more flood alerts issued Reuters Guillermo Lujan, the mayor of Aldaia near Valencia, stands in front of sandbags in anticipation of a new “Dana” weather system Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in the Costa del Sol region of southern Spain after a red weather alert was issued for extreme rain and flooding. Spain’s Civil Protection Agency sent a mass alert to phones in Málaga province after 22:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Tuesday evening warning of a “extreme risk of rainfall”. The area, including the tourist resorts of Marbella, Velez and Estepona, is expected to take the brunt of the extreme weather phenomenon known as a “Dana”. Several other regions in Spain remain on alert as the new weather front is expected to bring torrential rain and low temperatures just weeks after the country was devastated by flash floods that have so far ******* more than 220 people. Catalonia in north-eastern Spain, particularly the coast near Tarragona, has also been placed on red alert until Wednesday evening. Schools in the entire southern province of Málaga have been closed while many supermarkets have kept shutters down. Around 3,000 people living in close proximity to the Guadalhorce River have been told to leave their homes, the Regional Government of Andalusia has said. Regional government’s Minister of the Presidency Antonio Sanz said: “We have not evacuated entire towns, but rather specific areas linked to the riverbank. “This decision has been communicated to the government of Spain in order to receive collaboration from the state security forces and bodies.” The severe weather alert in Málaga has also led to the opening tie of the Billie Jean King Cup between Spain and Poland being postponed, the International Tennis Federation said. The two nations were set to play in Malaga on Wednesday. In other parts of Spain precautions are being taken – with eastern and southern Mediterranean areas the most vulnerable. Reuters Valencia is still recovering from the first “Dana” weather system at the end of October Spain’s meteorological agency Aemet has placed parts of the Valencia and Andalusia regions, as well as the Balearic Islands, on orange alert from now until Thursday. Aemet warns of rainfall and storms that could be “very strong to torrential”. That orange alert is the second highest and it signals a significant meteorological event “with a degree of danger for normal activities”. In Valencia, school classes and sports activities suspended in some areas and sandbags piled up to protect the centre of the town of Aldaia. However this second Dana weather system is not expected to be as dramatic as the red alert on 29 October, when the Valencia region in particular suffered an unprecedented loss of lives and material damage. Elsewhere, rescue teams searching for the bodies of two young brothers who were swept away in the Valencia floods two weeks ago said their bodies had been found. Izan Matías, 5, and Rubén Matías, 3, were pulled from their father Victor Matías’s arms when the torrent ripped through their home in Valencia on the evening of 29 October. Their aunt Barabara Sastre confirmed to the BBC the boys had been found. Their bodies were recovered in different locations. “My little angels, we have finally found you” one family friend, David Garcia, wrote online. “Two stars shine brighter in the sky.” Family handout Rubén (left) and Izan were “such happy kids”, their aunt said Yesterday, search teams had focused on part of the River Pollo about 6km (3.7km) from the family home. The boys’ uncle Iván had told the BBC he was hugely grateful for all the support they had received and hoped his nephews would be found. Volunteers from the Canary Islands and other parts of Spain had joined recovery specialists from Mexico, who normally work in the aftermath of earthquakes. On Monday, the family dog was found ***** in a garage in the town of Paiporta, more than 12km (7.4 miles) from their house in La Curra, a neighbourhood of Mas del Jutge. Dana weather systems are formed when an area of low pressure gets “cut off” from the main flow of the jet stream. This means that instead of moving through a region relatively quickly, they get blocked over the same area leading to persistent rainfall for several days. Colder air high in the atmosphere meets warmer air flowing in from the Mediterranean which intensifies the storm. 16. Hogwarts Legacy 2 Has the Perfect Timeline to Explore That Takes Down Harry Potter Fans and Gamers With a Single Spell Hogwarts Legacy 2 Has the Perfect Timeline to Explore That Takes Down Harry Potter Fans and Gamers With a Single Spell The success of Hogwarts Legacy has inspired its creators to begin working on a highly anticipated sequel, but what direction should it take? Set in 1890, the first game allowed players to experience Hogwarts before the events of Harry Potter, but the sequel has the potential to ***** even deeper into wizarding lore. A sequel is coming and we want it to go even further back in time. | Image Credit: Avalanche Software For a sequel, the perfect era to explore ***** in the founding of Hogwarts itself, as the title implies. If it covers this little-known era, Hogwarts Legacy 2 could give fans an experience free from connections to Harry Potter. Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Really Go Next Level With This One of the best ways Hogwarts Legacy 2 could stand out is by exploring the legendary founding of Hogwarts in the 10th century. This is an era only briefly mentioned in the books and is full of potential for any additional expansion. The Four Founders of Hogwarts and what each House represents. pic.twitter.com/j2nO4UuXnY — Harry Potter Stuff ⚯͛ (@TheHPfacts) August 1, 2015 During this *******, magic was feared, and witches and wizards faced persecution, prompting the school’s founders, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin to build a sanctuary for magical education. friendly reminder that rowena ravenclaw invented the name of hogwarts and chose the location of the castle. still an underrated house, i hate y’all. pic.twitter.com/Ob2124NgAW — marian (@gayrauder) December 1, 2019 Placing the game in this era would allow developers to introduce fans to Hogwarts in its infancy, a castle under construction and surrounded by wild, magical lands that pose risks and wonders for early students. We’ve never seen a different version of the magical school and this could be it. A storyline set in Hogwarts’ founding era could offer rich themes of friendship, conflict, and cultural tensions, especially between Gryffindor and Slytherin. Historical accounts hint at a strong friendship that ultimately fractured over Slytherin’s ******* to restrict the school to pure-blood wizards. These ideological clashes could play a central role in the game. This would do well with a morality system where players would create friendships and brew rivalries. Modern audiences could also love how the game explores values of inclusion and acceptance. It’s a Part Of The Wizarding World Never Seen Before It’s an era never seen before full of potential. | Image Credit: Avalanche Software The founding era also provides ample room for creative world-building. Wizards and witches at this time had limited knowledge of magic, and spells would feel raw and experimental. It would be a contrast to the polished, refined spells in Harry Potter’s world. Players might even witness the origin of iconic spells, giving them a hands-on experience with the magical evolution of Hogwarts. The magical creatures inhabiting the areas around Hogwarts could also play a larger role in this setting. The founders, still establishing the safety of the grounds, would have to form alliances or protective charms with the beings of the Forbidden Forest and the Great Lake. We as players could step into the role of one of Hogwarts’ earliest students and be a part of these efforts. We could be the generation of pioneers that develop the future narrative as we help tame a world where magical dangers are ever-present. Using the founding era as a prequel also removes the risk of Hogwarts Legacy 2 overlapping with existing Harry Potter projects. By focusing on Hogwarts’ early days, the game can maintain a sense of authenticity without feeling familiar and do something new instead of rehashing the familiar plotlines of Harry’s era. 17. Samsung Wins Patent for a Tri-Fold Smartphone With Specialised Barrier Layer for Improved Durability Samsung Wins Patent for a Tri-Fold Smartphone With Specialised Barrier Layer for Improved Durability Samsung is speculated to be developing a tri-fold smartphone. This move is said to be in a bid to catch up to Huawei, which launched the world’s tri-fold smartphone dubbed Mate XT Ultimate Design in September. Ahead of its anticipated debut in 2025, Samsung has been recently granted a patent for a flexible display device with a foldable design featuring three screens and a specialised barrier layer for improved durability and reduced strain. Samsung Patent for Tri-Fold Smartphone A patent granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office (via MSPoweruser) to Samsung Electronics describes a display device with a flexible form factor. It was filed by Samsung in 2021 and was granted on November 5. Unlike rigid devices which have an allocated screen area for displaying images, this purported device is shown to have three areas: a first area which is folded, a second area which can be folded and unfolded, and a third area arranged along a specific direction. Samsung’s purported tri-fold smartphone Photo Credit: US Patent and Trademark Office/Samsung As per the patent, the device will feature a specialised barrier layer positioned below the display panel. This layer is said to have at least one opening which might overlap the second display area, and two lower plates placed below the panel overlapping all three areas. Furthermore, the display panel might also feature an anti-reflective layer on top, similar to the one used on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Although it suggests that the flexible display device may have the ability to be folded, bent, or deformed into various shapes, the document could be referring to the same purported tri-fold smartphone that Samsung is rumoured to be developing. The tri-fold smartphone is also speculated to come with support for multiple input methods, in addition to touch gestures. This suggests that the purported device might also feature S-Pen support. However, it is crucial to note that not all devices whose patents have been granted make it to the final production stage or carry the same elements. Thus, it is currently unclear whether Samsung’s purported tri-fold smartphone will feature similar technical aspects as described in the patent filing. 18. What happens to JD Vance’s Senate seat and others in Congress selected to join the Trump administration What happens to JD Vance’s Senate seat and others in Congress selected to join the Trump administration Washington — President-elect Donald Trump is returning to the White House next year after a decisive victory in the 2024 election. And he’s slated to bring with him a number of lawmakers to round out his administration — from Sen. JD Vance as vice president-elect to Rep. Elise Stefanik as his pick for ambassador to the U.N. With the moves, the lawmakers will have to vacate their seats after the start of the new Congress in January, teeing up the process to replace them. The process differs between the two chambers, and between states. Here’s how the vacancies will be filled: Filling vacancies in the Senate Rules differ across states for how to fill a Senate vacancy. In 45 states, governors appoint replacements to serve until the next election, while in just five states — Kentucky, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin — vacancies are filled by expedited special elections. Trump tapped Vance, an Ohio *********** first elected to the Senate in 2022, as his running mate in July, prompting him to depart from the Senate to serve as vice president following the election. And Trump is expected to name Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida as his nominee for secretary of state, a Cabinet position that requires confirmation by the Senate. Sen. J.D. Vance introduces former President Donald Trump during a rally at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on July 27, 2024 in St Cloud, Minnesota. Stephen Maturen / Getty Images In both Florida and Ohio, the governor appoints a replacement to serve until the next statewide election. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will appoint someone to fill the respective seats until a special election can be held in 2026. The winner of the 2026 election would serve the remainder of Vance and Rubio’s terms, meaning that person would have to run for election again in 2028. Both DeWine and DeSantis have long histories with Trump, with the Ohio governor being one of the few prominent Republicans who declined to endorse Trump’s 2024 bid. And DeSantis’ relationship with Trump had been similarly frosty, after the two men faced off in the GOP presidential primaries earlier this year. But both *********** governors are expected to work in the best interest of the party, especially after Trump’s decisive victory. Who the governors will appoint to replace Vance and Rubio ******** to be seen. In Ohio, names like Secretary of State Frank LaRose, state Sen. Matt Dolan and former Ohio GOP chair Jane Timken have circulated, as have a number of lawmakers who represent Ohio in the House. In Florida, a number of possibilities have emerged for DeSantis to appoint, including Trump’s daughter in-law, Lara Trump, a co-chair of the *********** National Committee. DeSantis’s chief of staff James Utheier and Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez have also been among names floated, as have Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and former Florida House Speaker Jose Olivia. Filling vacancies in the House In the House, vacancies are filled by special elections. But the timing of those elections can vary. Trump selected Stefanik, the current *********** conference chair, to serve as his ambassador to the ******* Nations, teeing up a special election to fill her seat representing New York’s 21st congressional district. The district, which Stefanik won by more than 20 points in her reelection bid last week, is solidly red, making it a safe seat for Republicans in a special election. But it will remain vacant until a special election is held — a timeframe that is set by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and could take up to 90 days — taking away from what is expected to be a narrow *********** majority in the House. Rep. Michael Waltz, who Trump selected to serve as his National Security adviser, also represents a solidly red district in Florida. His seat will also be filled by a special election, and DeSantis is expected to work to quickly set a timeframe to replace him. 24. Florida homeowners told storm-damaged properties ‘not worth fixing’ Florida homeowners told storm-damaged properties ‘not worth fixing’ PORT ORANGE, Fla. – Hundreds of Volusia County residents have received letters declaring their hurricane-damaged homes beyond repair. The letters, sent to homeowners affected by Hurricanes Ian and Milton, state that costly upgrades will be required for those who wish to stay in their homes. Susan Thomas, a resident of Port Orange, says the damage has left her feeling hopeless. “Some days, I’m pretty down,” she said. “I have problems already from Ian that I’m still waiting to get solved.” Thomas, who lives in the Colony in the Wood mobile home park, is still waiting for repairs from Hurricane Ian when Hurricane Milton caused even more damage. “If I could move, I would move,” she said. The letters informed homeowners that repairing their homes would cost over 50% of the property’s value, meaning additional improvements are required to meet building codes. MORE STORIES: Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette explained that homeowners must bring their homes up to code to qualify for future FEMA funding. “You may be required to mitigate that damage beyond just simply repairing it,” he said. The goal, Burnette added, is to prevent repeat insurance claims by ensuring homes are made more resilient. “What they’re trying to do is make sure that we don’t have repeat claims,” he said. Those who received letters live in designated special flood hazard areas, which means they may need to provide a private appraisal proving their homes are not over 50% damaged or hire a surveyor to confirm their homes meet elevation requirements. If they cannot do so, homes may need to be replaced or raised. For residents like Thomas, who worry about affording these upgrades, Burnette emphasized that assistance is available. “I don’t want to have to see people go through this again if they can avoid this by reaching out and getting the help that is available to them,” he said. While some residents are open to the upgrades if assistance is provided, others are left uncertain about their futures. 25. Apex Legends Most Powerful ******* Type Is Currently at the Bottom of the Barrel in Season 23 Apex Legends Most Powerful ******* Type Is Currently at the Bottom of the Barrel in Season 23 In the fast-evolving world of Apex Legends, the developers at Respawn Entertainment are constantly tweaking the balance of weapons to keep the gameplay fresh, exciting, and dynamic. With each new season, players can expect a variety of changes, from new weapons to changes to existing ones. These changes are designed to shake up the meta and encourage new strategies. The new season has brought new changes to the game. | Image Credit: Respawn Entertainment In Season 23, it looks like one of the game’s most powerful ******* classes, the Submachine Guns (SMGs), has been hit very hard with balance changes that have left it in a less-than-ideal state. They have been replaced by the Shotguns and long-time players are voicing their concern over social media platforms and gaming forums. SMGs Have Fallen From Grace in Apex Legends Season 23 Players are not happy with the changes to SMGs. | Image Credit: Respawn Entertainment SMGs have long become the bread and butter of players who love to play aggressively and at close-range combat in Apex Legends. Weapons like the R-99, Volt, and Alternator were the staples of the ******* pool, with many players relying on their rapid ***** and high damage output to dominate in tight spaces. With SMGs taking a ********* in the new Season 23, players are finding themselves leaning more toward Shotguns, LMGs, and even ******* Rifles for close to mid-range combat. Particularly, shotguns have become a staple in the loadouts due to the changes made to Gibraltar’s bubble and the improved capability of healing items. The new meta revolves around a hit-and-run style of play: using a shotgun at the edge of the bubble, peeking out to take a shot, and then quickly retreating to safety (healing up if needed). With the effectiveness of healing increased this season, this tactic has proven to be more effective than ever. While some players are happy to see SMGs no longer dominate the meta after years of being top-tier, many are frustrated by how weak SMGs feel now. One player summed up the reaction on Reddit with a question: Comment byu/ILewdElichika from discussion inapexlegends Comment byu/ILewdElichika from discussion inapexlegends Comment byu/ILewdElichika from discussion inapexlegends Comment byu/ILewdElichika from discussion inapexlegends The reaction to the new meta is divided. While some players are enjoying the shift away from SMGs, others are calling for adjustments to help these weapons regain their former power. Despite the changes, the community is still engaged, with players discussing everything from ******* balancing to the various updates brought by Season 23. Players Looking Forward to The Road Ahead Players have mixed responses to the meta-shift, particularly to the rise of Shotguns. | Image Credit: Respawn Entertainment As the community continues to send mixed signals over SMG changes, the question ********: will Respawn respond to these concerns and bring the class weapons back into balance, or is the time of SMGs in Apex Legends officially over? For now, it looks like players will have to adapt to the current ******* meta and make the most of the tools at their disposal. In the meantime, SMG gamers may need to take a ********* and explore other powerful options like the shotguns and LMGs that have been dominating the game. It’s time to dominate the battlefield with Mastiff’s devastating damage, the Rampart’s LMG setup, or the close-range precision of the P2020 with Hammerpoint. There are plenty of options for players who are feeling disappointed with the current state of the entire SMG class. With changes and balances coming every season alongside changes with different patches, players never know when the SMGs will find their groove again. In the end, one thing is clear: in Apex Legends Season 23, the power balance has shifted, and SMGs are currently at the bottom of the barrel (maybe not behind Snipers). But, like every season before it, this could all change with the next patch.
