  1. Meet the Little-Known Company Yielding 11% That Continues to Deliver Monthly for Income Seekers and Is Making Patient Investors Notably Richer Meet the Little-Known Company Yielding 11% That Continues to Deliver Monthly for Income Seekers and Is Making Patient Investors Notably Richer One of the best aspects of putting your money to work on Wall Street is that you don’t have to conform to any blueprint. With thousands of publicly traded companies and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to choose from, there’s a very high probability of finding one or more securities that matches your investment goals and risk tolerance. But among the countless ways investors can build their wealth on Wall Street, few have proven more successful over long periods than buying and holding high-quality dividend stocks. Start Your Mornings Smarter! Wake up with Breakfast news in your inbox every market day. Sign Up For Free » Image source: Getty Images. Companies that regularly dole out a dividend to investors are almost always profitable on a recurring basis, time-tested, and capable of providing transparent long-term growth outlooks. In other words, they’re typically established businesses that have demonstrated to investors they can navigate challenging periods and thrive during long-winded economic expansions. These are just the type of companies we’d expect to increase in value over the long run. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Recently, the investment advisors at Hartford Funds updated their data from a report released last year (The Power of Dividends: Past, Present, and Future), which examined the degree of outperformance between dividend stocks and non-payers over the long-term. According to Hartford Funds, in collaboration with Ned Davis Research, non-payers produced a modest average annual return of 4.27% between 1973 and 2023, and did so while being 18% more volatile than the benchmark S&P 500. On the other hand, dividend stocks more than doubled up the average annual total return of non-payers over the previous half-century (9.17%), and were also 6% less-volatile than the S&P 500. While dividend stocks have a phenomenal track record of making patient investors notably richer, studies have also shown that risk and yield tend to go hand in hand. For example, a company with a struggling operating model and a declining share price has the potential to lure income seekers into a yield trap. Since yield is a function of payout relative to share price, companies with ultra-high-yields (i.e., yields that are four or more times greater than the S&P 500’s yield) require extra vetting by investors. But this doesn’t mean all ultra-high-yield dividend stocks are necessarily trouble. With the proper evaluation, ultra-high-yielding gems can be found. In fact, some of the safest supercharged dividend stocks might just be companies you’ve never heard about. Story Continues Image source: Getty Images. Although mortgage real estate investment trusts (REITs) are the typical go-to for investors looking for supercharged yields, I’d argue there’s an even better way to secure a gargantuan annual yield and more than double your money every decade. Meet little-known business development company (BDC) PennantPark Floating Rate Capital (NYSE: PFLT), which is currently yielding 11% and doling out $0.1025 per share on a monthly basis! A BDC is a company that invests in the equity (common and preferred stock) and/or debt of middle-market businesses. “Middle-market” companies are typically unproven micro- and small-cap businesses that may or may not be publicly traded. When PennantPark lifted the hood on its fiscal third-quarter operating results for the ******* ended June 30, it was overseeing a nearly $1.66 billion investment portfolio. Although it held an assortment of preferred- and common-stock equity totaling $208.6 million, the roughly $1.45 billion in debt securities it owns makes it a predominantly debt-focused BDC. Since most middle-market companies are unproven and lack access to basic financial services, PennantPark is able to generate a market-topping yield on its loans. During the June-ended quarter, its weighted average yield on debt securities was a scorching-hot 12.1%, which is almost triple the yield you’ll receive from a 10-year Treasury bond. However, the biggest advantage PennantPark Floating Rate Capital brings to the table can be seen in its name. The entirety of its debt-securities portfolio is based on variable rates. With the Fed increasing interest rates at the fastest clip in four decades between March 2022 and July 2023, PennantPark’s weighted average yield on debt investments surged by a peak of 520 basis points from where things stood on Sept. 30, 2021. Although the nation’s central bank has kicked off a rate-easing cycle, returning to a historically low federal funds rate of 0% to 0.25% doesn’t look to be in the cards. With the Fed slow-stepping its monetary policy shift, there’s plenty of runway for PennantPark to generate superior yields from its debt investments. The steps PennantPark’s management team has taken to protect its principal also explains its success. For instance, the company’s roughly $1.66 billion portfolio, including equities, is spread across 151 companies, which works out to an average investment size of $11 million. No wager is too big to upend PennantPark. What’s more, 99.9% of the company’s debt investments (all but $1.2 million) are of the first-lien secured variety. First-lien secured debtholders find themselves at the front of the line for repayment in the event that a borrower seeks bankruptcy protection. Despite working with generally unproven businesses, only 1.5% of PennantPark’s debt investments were on non-accrual (i.e., delinquent), as of June 30. Since going public in 2011, PennantPark Floating Rate Capital has delivered a 187% return to its shareholders, including dividends. Though this doesn’t hold a candle to Wall Street’s prominent tech stocks, it’s a phenomenal return for a monthly dividend payer that can sustain its 11% annual yield. 2. Bitcoin: Is the Powell-Fueled Pullback a Dip-Buying Opportunity? Bitcoin: Is the Powell-Fueled Pullback a Dip-Buying Opportunity? Bitcoin’s recent dip raises questions about whether its post-election rally has run its course. Despite Powell’s hawkish remarks, Bitcoin’s long-term bullish trend ******** intact. Key support levels will determine if Bitcoin’s rally can continue or if further corrections are ahead. Looking for more actionable trade ideas? Subscribe here for up 55% off as part of our Early Bird ****** Friday *****! ‘s recent decline of over 3% marks the first significant dip since its rally began following the US Presidential election on November 5. While the pullback can partly be attributed to comments from Jerome , the central question arises: Has the so-called “Trump rally” in Bitcoin and altcoins run its course? The surge in Bitcoin’s price after Donald Trump’s election victory can largely be credited to his promises to support the crypto sector, which had investors bullish. Bitcoin recently hit a new record of $93,129, thanks to both these promises and the broader crypto market dynamics. Yet, external factors—such as a relatively calm election and Trump’s clear victory—also contributed to this rise. With Trump securing a non-controversial win and a majority in the Senate, risk appetite increased, bringing traditional investors into the crypto fold. Another catalyst was the ‘s 25-basis point interest rate cut, which, though expected, served as a buying excuse for many crypto investors. With the market buoyed by the ‘s actions, Bitcoin seemed poised for even greater highs, possibly breaking the $100,000 mark. However, Powell’s hawkish stance in his recent speech has put the brakes on the crypto rally. Powell asserted that the US economy ******** strong and that interest rates won’t be cut hastily, dampening market expectations for a December rate cut. As a result, Bitcoin and the broader crypto market have seen significant sell-offs, particularly in Bitcoin ETFs, as short-term investors seize the opportunity to take profits. Despite the recent downturn, the broader bullish trend ******** intact. Stable political prospects in the US, coupled with expectations for a strong economy, should help maintain investor appetite for risk. However, with the recent surge in Bitcoin’s price, these corrections may pose risks for short-term traders. That said, many investors are viewing these dips as opportunities to buy the dip, anticipating a potential altcoin rally as Bitcoin continues to gain ground. Bitcoin’s dominance rate has been fluctuating, especially after Powell’s remarks. While Bitcoin’s dominance has rebounded, many altcoins have experienced sharp reversals, indicating that the market may be in a transitional phase. As we assess the current state of the market, it’s clear that the first wave of the Trump effect on cryptocurrencies is priced in, and short-term support and resistance levels are now critical. Current Support and Resistance Levels for Bitcoin Looking at the charts, Bitcoin has lost some momentum after hitting record highs this week. It touched the $90,000 range briefly but ******* to sustain that level, dropping to $87,000 after recent sales. Support has held at this price zone since early this week. Bitcoin’s bullish trend, which began in September, saw it close above the $80,000 resistance level last week. This week, Bitcoin tested the $92,470 resistance level, a key Fibonacci point. However, rapid selling at this level suggests that Bitcoin may struggle to break above it for now. If Bitcoin fails to hold the $87,200 region, we could see a dip to $84,700, with further declines possible if it drops below $80,000. On the weekly chart, Bitcoin broke the midline of its upward channel this week, signaling a possible continuation of the long-term bullish trend. Should the price pull back further, $85,700 could serve as a critical support level. If Bitcoin holds above this level, a rally toward $105,500—a key Fibonacci target—******** a real possibility. In summary, Bitcoin’s recent dip, while notable, could be a buying opportunity for long-term investors, especially if it finds solid support at key levels. The broader bullish outlook ******** intact, but market watchers should closely monitor technical levels for any signs of deeper corrections. *** Disclaimer: This article is written for informational purposes only. 4. Typhoo Tea teeters on the brink of administration Typhoo Tea teeters on the brink of administration Typhoo Tea is set to appoint administrators as the 120-year old brand’s sales slump, losses widen and debts rise. The company has filed a notice at court “which affords the company some breathing space to explore solutions”, Typhoo’s chief executive Dave McNulty told the BBC. The firm has been trying to turn itself around for some time. However, it suffered a setback after trespassers damaged its former factory in Moreton, Merseyside in August followed by a ***** at the same plant in October. “Given the delicate nature of this we are not in a position to comment any further,” said McNulty. Typhoo has reportedly appointed accountancy firm EY to handle the administration. The company’s losses widened to £38m from £9.6m in the year to the end of September 2023, which are the most recent results available. Sales fell to to £25.3m from £33.7m. The results also revealed £24.1m worth of “exceptional costs”, some of which relates to the break-in at the Moreton plant, which was shut down last year. Typhoo said: “During August, a group of organised trespassers broke into the Moreton site and occupied it for several days.” It added that the trespassers caused “extensive damage” and made the site “inaccessible”. It said a lot of tea was rendered unusable and it was unable to fulfil some orders to customers. Not reflected in the results were the impact of a ***** in October at the same Moreton plant. Local ***** services told local publication Wirral Globe that the ***** broke out on 1 October, with firefighters working throughout the night to put the blaze out. 5. Tired of signing up to services or websites only to be spammed? Gmail could get a ‘shielded email’ feature to save you from all that stress Tired of signing up to services or websites only to be spammed? Gmail could get a ‘shielded email’ feature to save you from all that stress Code for a ‘Shielded Email’ feature is in the Google Play Services APK You’ll seemingly be able to use a temporary email address to avoid spam Doing so could also avoid your real email being leaked in a data breach Gmail could offer the ability for users to create temporary email addresses, for signing up to online accounts or services they may be unsure about, allowing people to hide their real email address and avoid being spammed in the future (or perhaps worse dangers than that). Android Authority got the scoop on this after digging around in the inner workings of the new 24.45.33 release of the Google Play Services APK, which contains references to ‘Shielded Email’ and a bunch of clues as to how this feature will work. You’ll be able to create a shielded email – a temporary (Google-generated) email address different from your actual Gmail address, the mail to which gets forwarded to your Gmail inbox – when you’re forced to enter an email to sign up for an app, for example, or a website. In these cases, with an unknown or less trustworthy firm, if you enter your real email address, you might then be spammed repeatedly by the company or website you’ve signed up with. When that inevitably happens, you can simply turn off that secondary email address – just bin it – and voila, no more spam emails. As one of the strings of text in the hidden bits of code puts it: “To control spam, you can turn off forwarding at any time in your Google Account.” Getting out of that bind is obviously not as simple as that if you’ve provided the company with your real email address. (Image credit: Dell) Analysis: Security benefits What’s also important to note is that this could be a real lifesaver of a security feature in some ways. By which we mean if you gave your real email address to a company that had lax security, and that outfit then suffered a data breach in which your email was compromised – that’s obviously very bad news. If you used a shielded, temporary email, and that’s leaked instead, then that’s no big deal – just bin it, as noted above, and the problem is solved. Sign up to be the first to know about unmissable ****** Friday deals on top tech, plus get all your favorite TechRadar content. This is a pretty cool addition for Gmail then – assuming it happens, of course. Right now, all we have is some code hanging around in the background, which might ultimately come to nothing. The good news is that Android Authority has also noticed a mention of shielded emails appearing in Google’s Autofill settings menu on Android, so that’s a positive glimmer of hope this is really happening. And for those of you thinking – this sort of one-off or temporary email feature is nothing new, and you can get it from a variety of sources – well, yes, that’s true. However, having the functionality right there, integrated into Gmail, would be a considerable boon in terms of seamless access to temporary emails, with no fuss or messing about. The TV presenter posted a video on Instagram to say she had been diagnosed with a rare type of benign tumour called a colloid cyst. A benign tumour is not cancerous, but such cysts tend to grow slowly, according to the Brains Trust charity. “It needs to come out because if it grows, it would be bad,” McCall said, adding: “So say a prayer for me. I am in good spirits.” In her video, she explained: “A few months ago, I did a menopause talk for a company and they offered me a health scan in return, which I thought I was going to ace. “But it turned out I had a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst, which is very rare – three in a million. “And so I slightly put my head in the sand for a while, and then I saw quite a few neurosurgeons. I got lots of opinions, and I realised that I have to get it taken out. “It’s big for the space. It fills the space. It’s 14mm wide, and it needs to come out because if it grows, it would be bad. So I’m having it removed via a craniotomy.” Source link #Davina #McCall #surgery #rare #brain #tumour Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. Microsoft UAE power deal at centre of US plan for AI supremacy Microsoft UAE power deal at centre of US plan for AI supremacy Microsoft has struck an artificial intelligence (AI) energy deal with ******* ***** Emirates (UAE) oil giant ADNOC after a year of extraordinary diplomacy in which it was the vehicle for a US strategy to prevent a ******** military tech grab in the Gulf region. The latest in a line of AI deals that Microsoft has struck in the UAE this year, it is the fruit of a strategic partnership the US struck with the Gulf state in September to entwine the UAE with US strategic interests and technology, after it started investing its oil wealth in a plan to become an AI superpower. It also entrenches Microsoft’s place at the crux of the environmental crisis, pledging to help one of the world’s largest oil firms use AI to become a net-zero producer of carbon emissions, while getting help in return in building renewable energy sources to feed the unprecedented demand that the datacentres powering its AI services have for electricity. The same paradox was played out at the COP 28 climate conference in Dubai last December, while Microsoft prepared to ink a $1.5bn investment in UAE state-owned AI and datacentre conglomerate G42, where Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, ADNOC oil chief, chaired a global agreement to ditch fossil fuels. But the agreement raises a question of why Microsoft needs the partnership to explore the potential for renewables to power AI, when a considerable proportion of electricity required to run the power-hungry computers in the world’s datacentres already comes from renewable sources. This came after massive investments by US big tech firms, and when a third party in the deal is Masdar, the renewables arm of a UEA sovereign wealth fund, set up to invest the state’s oil wealth in renewables. This helped the Gulf state attain a similar place in the world’s top 10 rankings for solar power output as it has in oil production. Masdar’s investments include the ***’s Dogger Bank wind farm, set to become the world’s largest. Power struggle It is a crucial question for UAE, which has established its credentials in making some of the most notable breakthroughs in AI tech in recent years. This includes the Falcon large language model, which is compared for its acumen with well-known AI engines operated by US big tech firms, and is the world’s first Arabic AI model. The petrostate seeks to be a world leader in AI, while the global energy transition strips it of the oil and gas wealth upon which its economy was until recently almost entirely dependent. Al Jaber, who is also UAE industry minister, characterised these last weeks as a crisis, worsened by an anticipated population surge across the southern hemisphere, and by the unexpected and exponential growth in demand for power from datacentres housing AI computer systems. It is a crucial matter for UAE because the weather in the Middle East is so hot that it takes 50% more energy to cool a datacentre there than in the cooler northern reaches where most datacentres operate, according to Tassos Peppas, regional director of Vertiv, a supplier of datacentre power and cooling systems crucial for running the prized Nvidia computer chips crucial for the big AI systems. “The Middle East is not the best place for energy efficiency,” he said. No matter that energy in the Gulf was typically 90% cheaper than Europe, and that the same datacentre, on balance, would cost up to 80% less than one in Europe. Unanticipated until 18 months ago, the UAE has now called for a boost in all forms of cleaner energy, including the liquid natural gas to which the country has turned to as a less-polluting fossil fuel export than the oil, which is still a primary source of power across those countries where populations are booming and economies are industrialising fast, Al Jaber told a global conference of oil and energy chiefs, and state officials from across the southern hemisphere. Those countries, across *******, Southeast and Central Asia, and the ****** subcontinent, where UAE has a long tradition of trade, have become a destination for Emirate investments in AI, energy and port infrastructure. The firms Microsoft has been doing business with have all been spreading their influence by making such AI investments across the wider region. Microsoft itself did a $1bn AI deal with the UAE in Kenya in May. Gateway to growth That explains both Microsoft and US motives in the Gulf state, as UAE AI minister Omar Sultan Al Olama put it in an interview with US think tank Atlantic Council when the software giant took its massive stake in G42 in in April. UAE is a “gateway” to *******, Southeast Asia and India. He likened great power competition in AI, and international negotiations over AI regulation such as the ***’s own Bletchley Park summit, to the Cold War nuclear arms race. “UAE is the perfect hub where the US can showcase its technology for the rest of the developing world in a way that asserts its supremacy in this domain,” he said. UAE’s Falcon AI was a vehicle the US could use to assert that supremacy, because it was known and trusted in *******, for example, while Falcon would benefit from getting access to advanced US AI technology. That trade-off came at the expense last year of G42 purging its systems and datacentres of ******** technology, paving the way for a strategic deal with the US two months ago, and a series of tie-ups. These included a $100bn investment fund that Microsoft formed with US financial giants BlackRock and Global Infrastructure Partners, and UAE state-owned AI investor MGX. Microsoft president Brad Smith joined UN environment envoy Mark Carney and the CEOs of most major oil firms to agree on the eve of the energy conference that the crisis was so great that it would need gas, as well as nuclear and renewables, to solve it. The software giant’s latest contribution will be the AI engine for a UAE effort to make its fossil gas exports more competitive, as well as its energy system greener. Microsoft will help run a national infrastructure of energy grid battery plants UAE needs to store output from what it claims is the world’s largest solar farm, as it completes construction in the next five years. Al Jaber, sitting on the boards of most of the firms involved, as well as running the industry ministry, and Microsoft’s Smith, will be at the centre of it all. 12. Milestone magic from Yallop in Roar win over Glory Milestone magic from Yallop in Roar win over Glory Brisbane Roar captain Tameka Yallop scored a double in a 2-0 A-League Women win over Perth Glory as she equalled the record for most top flight matches for the club. The 33-year-old drew level with Matildas teammate Clare Polkinghorne on 152 appearances for the Roar. She opened the scoring with a goal for the ages from an acute angle just inside the box after a long ball from Momo Hayashi at Brisbane’s Perry Park. Yallop was cool and calm in slotting a penalty just after halftime after Matildas teammate Sharn Freier was brought down by Glory goalkeeper Miranda Templeman. It was her 65th goal in the ALM. Templeman was under siege for most of the match as the Roar played a wonderful brand of attacking football that featured precision passing and enthusiastic support. Impressive 20-year-old Roar midfielder Tamar Levin noted Templeman had roamed out of the goal mouth and launched a stunning 35m strike that soared into the back of the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break. It was Levin’s first in the ALM and one to savour. The Roar have been given plenty of thrust up front from Bulgarian international Evdokiya Popadinova and the **** recruit was a constant threat. Glory, notably lethargic in extreme humidity after a long road trip, were unable to build any momentum and gave the ball away far too often. The win took the Roar to six points after three rounds, with Glory having the one win so far. Friday night was special for Yallop, with former Roar and Matildas midfielder Alicia Ferguson high in her praise. “It is really important for Tameka Yallop to stay fit and healthy at this point of her career and I think she is looking in great form,” Ferguson said in commentary on Paramount. “She has taken on this leadership role with the Brisbane Roar and has been there since I played with her in the first season of the W-League when we won the grand final in 2008-09. “She has always been an exceptional talent and an extremely mobile and attacking player.” Source link #Milestone #magic #Yallop #Roar #win #Glory Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Nations League: Greek police criticised for ‘heavy-handed’ treatment of England fans Nations League: Greek police criticised for ‘heavy-handed’ treatment of England fans Greek police have been criticised after it was claimed they used riot shields and tear gas to control England supporters during the Nations League match with Greece in Athens. The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) is asking fans to share their experiences of the situation that unfolded outside of the Athens Olympic Stadium on Thursday. After the match, which England won 3-0, the Football Association released a statement saying it was aware of issues and were obtaining more information on what happened. Posting on X, external, Free Lions, the FSA’s fans’ embassy team, said there is “still clearly so much needed” to ensure fans are not put in “unjustifiably dangerous situations”. Around 3,500 England supporters travelled to the Greek capital for the sold-out fixture but some fans complained of being “pushed” and receiving “heavy-handed” treatment from local police. “Despite being told how things would operate in advance, to see the exact opposite occur in some cases, and to see the treatment of our fans by local police using shields and tear gas to do something as simple as rearrange a ******, is so incredibly frustrating,” the FSA added. Neil Druckmann’s Says Current Project in the Works Since 2020, Suggesting An Imminent Announcement About The Last of Us 3 Neil Druckmann’s Says Current Project in the Works Since 2020, Suggesting An Imminent Announcement About The Last of Us 3 Neil Druckmann has just revealed that the new game from Naughty Dogs has been in the works since 2020, and there is a high chance that it gets announced later this year, one year prior to its release, a strategy Sony has been using for a long time now. Druckmann is excited to share news about his new game. Image Credit: Jon Kopaloff (Getty Images) The game Druckmann is talking about is anticipated to be The Last of Us 3. This is a strong assumption given the time given for its development, which roughly accounts for almost 5 years, which is the average time needed to complete an AAA title. Neil Druckmann Is Excited To Announce His Next Game Naughty Dog’s next game anticipated to release next year. Image Credit: Naughty Dog Druckmann shared his excitement about the next game he is working on through an online panel with Ken Levine; the video has unfortunately been removed for the public as of now. There is a high chance that Naughty Dog announces its next title in TGA later this year. TGA is a celebration of games from all over the world and one of the biggest events of the gaming industry. There have been rumours in the air about Druckmann working on a new IP for Sony, and there is a chance that this game he has been talking about is in fact a completely fresh one. If such is the case, then it would be the first time in many years that Naughty Dog will release a new game. If the development started in 2020, then the chances of it being the next addition to The Last of Us franchise are relatively higher. The Only Certain Thing Is That We Are Getting A New Game For Sure There is a high chance that the next game from Naughty Dog might be The Last of Us Part 3. Image Credit: Naughty Dog Whether the next game is The Last of Us 3 or a fresh IP is debatable, but the only thing that is certain is that we sure are getting a new game next year. Sony only announces titles 1 year prior to release, and even Druckmann is of the opinion that announcing a game closer to release relieves pressure off of the team. This approach has proved beneficial in the past. What the next game is, we still can’t say for sure, but we might get a clear picture towards the end of this year when the game is announced. 16. Aaron Kirby: The bounce of *********** wickets India’s arch-****** once again Aaron Kirby: The bounce of *********** wickets India’s arch-****** once again There’s a reason the *********** cricket team consider beating India in India the pinnacle of achievements. The conditions are so foreign, and unlike anything in Australia, your entire team must show true mastery over their skills to even be competitive. But as hard as it is for Australia to adapt to India, it’s just as difficult for India to adapt to Australia. And that was in the spotlight again as the megastars of Team India took to the WACA Ground for the first day of match simulation. The WACA pitch, with India using the strip that was once reserved for Tests at the iconic cricket ground, was far from demonic but did have some of the venue’s famed pace and bounce. To India’s dismay, its first scalp was KL Rahul’s right hand/arm. Sent out to open as he auditions to take the place of Rohit Sharma, who is likely to miss the first two Tests as he awaits the birth of his second child, Rahul was left in visible discomfort as a delivery from Prasidh Krishna reared towards his glove. He attempted to take strike after taking a breather but had to call for medical assistance and was taken from the field without returning. If Rahul has suffered a fracture, India will have to make a tough decision. Shubman Gill was shifted to open with impressive youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal as the top order were given a second ******. But Gill has struggled at the top of the order in past series in Australia and has been crafting a home for himself at first drop. If Rahul doesn’t get up for the West Test commencing on Friday, and India doesn’t want to change their order, it could leave them looking at debuting Abhimanyu Easwaran. The 29-year-old has an impressive first-class resume with 7674 runs at 48.87 with 27 centuries, but they lose 53 Tests of experience and a batter that can ply his trade from one to seven. It’s almost like Australia losing Alex Carey but not having Josh Inglis in reserve. Camera IconShubman Gill in action. Credit: Ian Munro/The West *********** The bounce proved India’s No.1 issue for the rest of the day, with every top-order wicket, other than Rishabh Pant being bowled, coming from catches behind the wicket. After three crisp cover drives, Virat Kohli was caught behind prodding. Jaiswal and Gill used their extra height and looked better, but both were caught in the gully region during their first knock. India were wise to give themselves a near-fortnight lead in as Australia’s bounce looks like the tourists’ arch-****** once again. 17. The best iPad accessories for 2024 The best iPad accessories for 2024 If you’ve just picked up the new iPad mini, or any iPad for that matter, you’re probably already loving its versatility. But the right accessories can take your tablet experience to a whole new level. From productivity boosts to style upgrades, accessories are essential for getting the most out of your iPad. For instance, a keyboard folio can transform your iPad into a mini laptop, perfect for typing on the go, while a folio case provides protection with a touch of style. There are also accessories like power adapters for quicker charging or hubs with a dual USB-C port to connect multiple devices at once, which can be game-changers if you’re working with more than one gadget. And as iPadOS keeps evolving, so do the ways we can make our iPads feel more like complete workstations or creative hubs. Whether you’re after a high-quality screen protector, a new stand or anything in between, there are accessories for everyone that can make your iPad even more capable and fun to use. Quick Overview See 10 more Which iPad generation do you own? Before you splurge on a bunch of accessories, you should double check which iPad generation you own. There are a couple of ways to do this: first, you can check the back of your tablet for its model number, which will start with an “A” and end with a series of numbers. You can also go into Settings on your iPad, then General and look up the model number in the top section. If you see a series of letters and numbers with a slash (“/“) in it, just tap that to reveal the iPad’s true model number. The most important iPad details to consider before buying accessories are the charging port, screen size and Apple Pencil compatibility. Most iPads now have USB-C charging, save for the 9th-gen iPad that still uses a Lightning connector (and is on the way out anyway). Make sure to double check your iPad’s screen size before buying a folio case or a screen protector. As for the Apple Pencil, check out this guide to how to choose the right Apple Pencil to make sure you’re getting the right one for the tablet you have. Best iPad accessories for 2024 OtterBox Otterbox is an expert when it comes to protection, as seen with their phone cases, but its Symmetry Series 360 series shows that it has design chops, too. Symmetry cases look similar to the Apple’s Smart Cover, but the clear, scratch-resistant back is sturdy without adding a lot of weight to the iPad. Plus, the edge protection is substantial, so you won’t have to worry about damage from the inevitable, accidental bumps your tablet takes. I also like the extra flap Otterbox added that keeps the iPad screen cover closed and holds the second-generation Apple Pencil to the side of the iPad *****. Symmetry Series 360 cases are available for most iPad models, and while they’re more expensive than some no-name iPad case you might find on Amazon, they’re worth it if you want a great balance of protection and style. Speaking of cheaper iPad cases that fill up Amazon’s search result pages, some that are actually worthwhile are from Moko and ProCase. If you like the look and feel of Apple’s Smart Cover, but don’t want to drop $50-plus on one, both of these brands have dupes that give you that style at a fraction of the cost of the first-party option. — Valentina Palladino, Deputy Editor $50 at Amazon Twelve South Of the plethora of iPad stands I’ve used, Twelve South’s HoverBar Duo is the one that has come closest to perfect. The “duo” in the name refers to the fact that the gadget can either prop your iPad up using an arm attached to a weighted base, or the same arm just attached to a desk or table using its included clamp. The stand comes fully assembled on the weighted base, but it’s pretty easy to switch to the clamp thanks to the included instructions and basic tools in the box. If you spring for the latest model, it’ll be even easier thanks to a new quick-switch tab that lets you swap between the weighted base and the clamp attachment with any extra tools. It wasn’t hard to secure my 11-inch iPad Pro in the vice-grip that is the HoverBar Duo’s tablet clip, although it did take some force to move the arm into the right position. That’s probably for the best because it showed how strong the arm is; it stayed in place without buckling, sliding down or otherwise breaking a sweat. I mostly used the HoverBar Duo with the clamp attachment, which allowed me to use my iPad Pro as a secondary screen while working. The included clamp should fit most desks and tables too, as it can accommodate surface thickness from 0.4 inch to 1.4 inches. If you’re willing to sacrifice flexibility for something more elegant, Elago’s P2 stand for iPad may be a good fit. It’s made of a single piece of aluminum with a ledge for your iPad and a few well-placed cutouts that you can snake a charging cable through. The ledge is also wide enough to accommodate most iPad cases. It may not be foldable or adjustable, but its minimalist design will make it an attractive addition to your desk. — V.P. $66 at Amazon Logitech One of the best Bluetooth keyboards I’ve used recently is the Logitech MX Keys Mini. It’s not designed specifically for the iPad, but it works quite well with it. It combines a lot of the ergonomics and the general look and feel of the MX lineup into a compact and portable keyboard. The Keys Mini has a slim profile that’s slightly raised due to its top bar, plus comfortable backlit keys that are a dream to type on. The backlight is one of my favorite features because it automatically comes on when it senses your hands getting close to the keyboard. That way it only stays illuminated when you’re typing, conserving battery life in the long run. Logitech estimates the Keys Mini will last up to 10 days, depending on backlight use, or up to five months without any backlight use. Logitech’s $100 MX Keys Mini may be on the expensive side, but it’s one that could be both your iPad keyboard and your main desk typing device. It can connect to up to three devices at the same time, allowing you to swap between them quickly with just a press of a key, and it has a few other handy keys too like one that brings up the emoji picker and another that mutes your microphone (quite useful on Zoom calls). But if you want an iPad keyboard that’s even more affordable, or even thinner, we still like the Logitech Keys to Go, which we’ve recommended in the past and you can usually find for between $50 and $70. — V.P. $96 at Amazon Apple If you really want to indulge, Apple’s own Magic Keyboard is the way to go. This expensive keyboard folio magnetically attaches to the latest iPad ***** and keeps them “floating” above the keyboard and trackpad. We praised the Magic Keyboard for its typing comfort and precise trackpad, but dinged it for its limited range of motion. It’s easily the fanciest keyboard case available for the iPad and it’s one to consider if money is no object — or if you want the most stylish iPad keyboard money can buy. — V.P. $225 at Amazon Apple This likely won’t come as a surprise, but the Apple Pencil Pro is the best stylus you can get for the iPad. All models of the Apple Pencil are designed to work specifically with iPads and it shows in their smooth writing performance. The latest stylus has a double-tap feature that you can customize to a certain degree, and pressure-sensitivity allows you to add as much or as little detail as you want to digital artwork. Plus, it still supports wireless charging when you snap it magnetically to the side of your tablet. I highly recommend shelling out the extra money for an Apple Pencil if you’re an artist — you won’t be disappointed. — V.P. $94 at Amazon Logitech There are other options that are more affordable than the Apple Pencil, though, like Logitech’s Crayon. It’s just as good in terms of latency and accuracy — drawing in Procreate was a lag-free experience and my strokes always ended up exactly where I wanted them to be – and it’s even more grippy by default thanks to its oval-shaped design. But as someone who primarily uses an Apple Pencil for digital art, I missed pressure sensitivity when using the Crayon. Aside from that, the other biggest annoyance is that you have to use a Lightning or USB-C cable to charge it. (Even the newest model for the iPad ***** doesn’t magnetically attach to the tablet for charging.) While I wouldn’t suggest the Crayon for serious artists, I would recommend it for anyone who’s on a strict budget, especially digital journal-keepers, committed note-takers and the like. — V.P. $54 at Walmart Logitech We called Logitech’s MX Anywhere 3S a “nearly ideal travel mouse.” It’s light at just 95 grams and the buttons are nearly silent so you won’t bug anyone in the room with your furious clicking. The improved 8K DPI optical sensor works on just about any surface — including, for example, the upholstered arm of your couch. Depending on the ****** you pick, the MX Anywhere 3S is made from between 61 and 78 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. And the rechargeable battery lasts around 70 days on a charge. This generation doesn’t include a USB dongle (which wouldn’t work with your iPad anyway) but we never noticed any lag in Bluetooth performance in our tests anyway. — Amy Skorheim, Reporter $80 at Amazon Tablift Working at a computer can be a pain in the neck (literally), so I wanted a way to play with my iPad after work without having to lift my head off the couch. Sure, I could use my arms, but that gets tiring. This Tablift iPad holder looks a little funny, like some mech-spider attacking your chest, but it works exactly as I’d hoped. The adjustable legs are repositionable but quite sturdy once they’re in place, and three slots hold your tablet at different angles, including a forward-leaning one that’s particularly nice for lying down. It’s a little bulky, so I curl up the legs and store it under my couch. The slots and securing clip perform best if your device is ******, though I’ve been able to use it with a Smart Folio attached with little issue. — A.S. $40 at Amazon Satechi If you plan on pushing your iPad Pro to its limits as a daily driver, you’ll probably need more than the tablet’s single USB-C port. Apple has provided little guidance to which USB-C hubs and adapters work best with the iPad ***** — there’s no MFi certification for accessories like this yet. Some hubs specifically advertise that they work with the newest iPad *****, and if you want to be extra safe, I recommend buying one of those that comes from a reputable brand. Satechi’s $100 Aluminum Stand and Hub is a favorite for its foldable design and how it packs ports and charging capabilities into a compact iPad accessory. The holder itself rotates outward, revealing a hidden, attached USB-C cable and a rubber bumper that keeps the stand in place in your desk. On the back edge are a 4K HDMI socket, one USB-A port, a headphone jack, both SD and microSD card slots and a 60W USB-C connection for charging. I liked the versatility of Satechi’s hub. I could easily use it when I needed to prop my iPad up to watch a YouTube video, and by just plugging in the attached cable, I could switch to using my iPad as more of a work device with all of the necessary connectors in place. It’s also surprisingly light at 10 ounces. Combine that with its foldable design and you have a full-featured hub that can easily be stuffed in a bag. — V.P. $100 at Adorama Anker Not everyone needs, or wants, to spend $100 on a dock for their iPad. (If you’re using it as a laptop replacement, it’s worth the investment.) If you’d rather spend less, or just want something a bit more lightweight, Anker’s 7-in-1 USB-C hub is a good choice. It has most ports that you could ever want, with the only exception being an Ethernet jack. The slim dongle houses two USB-A ports, two USB-C connections, SD and microSD card slots and a 4K/30Hz HDMI port. We also like that it provides up to 85W of pass-through charging, which means you can power up your iPad while using Anker’s hub as the main connector between the tablet and its charging cable. Anker makes a couple of versions of this hub, including one that does have that coveted Ethernet port, but it’s hard to beat $35 for the standard 7-in-1 model. — V.P. $35 at Amazon Anker Apple and other tech companies are increasingly leaving wall adapters out of their devices’ boxes, so it’s worth picking up a couple that can handle charging a couple of pieces of tech as quickly as possible. Anker’s 45W Nano II GaN adapter is a good one because it can fast-charge iPhones and iPads, plus the gallium nitride technology built into it helps prevent overheating. In just a half hour of charging, I got about a 33 percent boost in battery life on my 11-inch iPad Pro when using this accessory. Gallium nitride is also a big reason why the 45W adapter is smaller than a lot of competing adapters available now, including Apple’s. We also like its foldable design, which will allow it to fit better in cramped spaces and in travel bags. — V.P. $28 at Amazon Photo by Amy Skorheim / Engadget Of all the power banks we tested, the Nimble Champ Pro was the second fastest to refill an iPad. The fastest overall was Mophie’s massive Powerstation Pro, but that one is really overkill if you’re just using it for a tablet. The Champ Pro, on the other hand, has a slim profile, a handy carrying strap and two USB-C ports. On a fifth-generation iPad Air, it moved the battery gauge from five percent to full in under two hours — and it still had enough juice leftover to give it another 75 percent bump. This is the pack I grab when I’m enjoying my iPad on the couch and don’t want to get up to revive its dying battery. — A.S. $76 at Nimble Paper-feel iPad screen protectors If you’re a heavy user of the Apple Pencil or some other stylus, you should consider getting a screen protector for your new iPad. They pull double-duty: Not only do they act as a first line of defense if your iPad goes careening onto concrete, but they can also enhance the digital drawing and writing experience. Using a stylus on an iPad is strange at first because gliding the stylus nib over a glass surface feels nothing like “normal” writing. Matte screen protectors can get closer to replicating the pen-on-paper experience, and they also prevent the stylus nib from wearing down as quickly. Paperlike Paperlike is the most popular brand in this space, with matte screen protectors for every model of iPad. A set comes with two sheets and includes guide stickers to help you get the protector positioned properly. The two-pack typically sells for $40 ro $45, depending on the size of your iPad. For something a little cheaper, Bersem’s screen protectors are a great value at $11 for a pack of two. Not only does the matte finish help when you’re drawing or taking digital notes, but it also reduces screen glare and doesn’t interfere with FaceID on the newest iPads. — A.S. $45 at Amazon BELLEMOND Bellemond’s “Kent Paper” overlay has the most satisfying texture of the paper-feel screen protectors I’ve tried. The blur is minimal and the friction between the stylus and the screen is just right for drawing. I miraculously managed to get the Bellemond affixed with minimal bubbles after watching the video linked with the QR code on the box. Two sheets come in a pack, so you can revert to a ****** screen for a while then go back to the paper-feel down the road. If you’d like a little more help with proper placement of your screen protector, you might appreciate Zagg’s GlassFusion+ Canvas which comes with a mounting tray for application. It’s also made from a polymer designed to absorb and protect your screen from impact. — A.S. $17 at Amazon Photo by Amy Skorheim / Engadget All paper-feel protectors impart a slight blur, which is why magnetic covers that you can reposition make solid alternatives. They offer texture when you’re drawing or writing, but you can remove them easily when you want to watch Star Trek with full clarity. The PenMat from PenTips uses thin magnets along the edges to affix the film to your screen and comes with a plastic sleeve to store the cover when you’re not using it. Application and removal is ***** simple, and also, there are no bubbles! The hold is surprisingly secure and the mat has a pleasing, velvety texture. I did notice a few faint squeaks when drawing with the Pencil, which didn’t bother me but might bug those who are sensitive to sounds. — A.S. $29 at PenTips Source link #iPad #accessories Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

In an interview with Rolling Stone following the launch of the company’s new This is an Xbox marketing campaign, Spencer explained that the shift to a multi-platform strategy doesn’t mean the Xbox Series X and Series S will be the final Xbox consoles. “We’ll definitely do more consoles in the future,” Spencer confirmed, “and other devices”. “Other devices” may refer to the oft-reported Xbox handheld, which Spencer said earlier this week was in the pipeline but was likely still years away. When asked by Rolling Stone if Xbox would release a mid-generation console upgrade similar to the PS5 Pro, Spencer was less definitive, appearing to suggest he didn’t think the difference in performance was worth it. “We think about hardware that can create unique value for our players or creators on our platform,” he explained. “We don’t need to do incremental hardware for our own benefit. “Does a new device really give you a unique experience on screen in some way? 20. November full Moon: when to see the last supermoon of 2024 November full Moon: when to see the last supermoon of 2024 The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle – in fact it is elliptical, meaning its distance from Earth at any given time will vary. The Moon’s furthest point from the Earth is known as apogee. When it is at its closest we call it perigee. And when the full Moon – which occurs roughly every 29.5 days – coincides with the Moon’s perigee, it appears ******* and brighter than usual and so we call it a supermoon. Supermoons are not particularly rare. In fact there are generally three or four each year. This year has already brought three consecutive supermoons – the Blue moon in August, September’s Harvest moon and the Hunter’s moon in October, which was the brightest of all. The ******* Moon will not be quite as bright but it still qualifies as a supermoon. It will be almost 14,000 miles (roughly 23,000km) closer to Earth than normal, with astronomers saying it will look around 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual – although it may be hard to tell the difference with the ****** eye. The next supermoon does not occur until October 2025 – so it will be worth catching a glimpse of this one if you can. In a new X post on Thursday that doubled as a job announcement and another one of Musk’s trolling attempts, the account for the newly formed Doge wrote: “We don’t need more part-time idea generators. We need super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours per week on unglamorous cost-cutting.” The name of the department, which is not part of the federal government, harkens back to a meme of an expressive shiba inu dog. “If that’s you, DM this account with your CV. Elon & Vivek will review the top 1% of applicants,” the statement added. In a separate post, Musk chimed in on the callout, saying: “Indeed, this will be tedious work, make lots of enemies & compensation is zero.” “What a great deal!” Musk, the richest man in the world, wrote with a laughing emoji. He has promised to reduce federal bureaucracy by a third and cut $2tn from US government spending, an endeavor he said “necessarily involves some temporary hardship”. 23. What La Niña means for temps, potential snowfall in Columbus What La Niña means for temps, potential snowfall in Columbus Have you felt that **** in the air? Did you break down and turn on your furnace? Winter is on its way. If you’ve been wondering what the winter might look like, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Wilmington have you covered. They’ve already begun predicting Ohio’s winter weather. Here’s what may be in store for Ohio this winter. How La Niña could impact Ohio’s winter weather A weak La Niña climate pattern will likely lead to above average temperatures in Ohio through December, January and February, NWS meteorologist Brandon Peloquin said at the 2024 Franklin County Snow Emergency Briefing on Nov. 14. La Niña will also likely cause slightly below average snowfall due to an increased prevalence of rain, Peloquin said. Central Ohio normally receives 20 to 30 inches of snow during winter. However, these predictions aren’t immovable. “All it takes is one storm to kind of throw that seasonal forecast out the window,” Peloquin said. Ohio’s winter weather will remain as variable as ever, meaning there will be warm spells with a potential for rain and storms, and cold snaps with snow and ice, Peloquin said. Also, starting this year, NWS Wilmington’s wind chill advisories will be renamed to cold weather advisories to focus on how cold it is regardless of the wind, Peloquin added. What is La Niña? This diagram shows how La Niña impacts the U.S. and the rest of North America. La Niña is a recurring climate pattern that occurs when trade winds that push warm water west from South America toward Asia are stronger than usual. Colder water rises to the surface to replenish the warm water pushed off to Asia, which in turn affects weather patterns in the U.S. A cooler Pacific Ocean causes the Pacific jet stream, a fast-moving current of air that circles the globe, to move north, leading to colder and wetter conditions in northern states and warmer and drier conditions in the southern U.S., according to the National Weather Service. *****@*****.tld @NathanRHart This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio winter weather forecast. 24. Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: The absurdity and appeal of Friday’s ****** in Texas Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: The absurdity and appeal of Friday’s ****** in Texas Large groups – fuelled by Tyson nostalgia – gathered outside the Toyota Music Factory in Irving before ******-week festivities, wanting to get as close to him as they could as he got out of his car. Social media influencers and stars from Netflix shows such Cobra Kai will attend on Friday, and a VIP package – valued at £1.5m – has been sold to a law firm. It includes photos with Tyson and Paul, a number of ringside tickets and a suite situated “flush against the ring”. Amid the glitz of ****** week, though, Taylor and Serrano have slipped into the background. Their ****** is being promoted by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, and co-founder Nakisa Bidarian says a Netflix deal was agreed before Tyson was chosen as the opponent. “People aged from four, five, six years old, all the way to the late 70s and early 80s who were fans of Mike in the 1990s or 1980s. We think it’s a very unique combination,” Bidarian says. “We expect record numbers.” The Netflix listing for Friday’s event, which includes the boxers in the cast list, reads: “This film is: Rousing, Exciting.” The hope is the genre does not turn out to be a horror.
