The TV presenter posted a video on Instagram to say she had been diagnosed with a rare type of benign tumour called a colloid cyst. A benign tumour is not cancerous, but such cysts tend to grow slowly, according to the Brains Trust charity. “It needs to come out because if it grows, it would be bad,” McCall said, adding: “So say a prayer for me. I am in good spirits.” In her video, she explained: “A few months ago, I did a menopause talk for a company and they offered me a health scan in return, which I thought I was going to ace. “But it turned out I had a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst, which is very rare – three in a million. “And so I slightly put my head in the sand for a while, and then I saw quite a few neurosurgeons. I got lots of opinions, and I realised that I have to get it taken out. “It’s big for the space. It fills the space. It’s 14mm wide, and it needs to come out because if it grows, it would be bad. Microsoft UAE power deal at centre of US plan for AI supremacy Microsoft UAE power deal at centre of US plan for AI supremacy Microsoft has struck an artificial intelligence (AI) energy deal with ******* ***** Emirates (UAE) oil giant ADNOC after a year of extraordinary diplomacy in which it was the vehicle for a US strategy to prevent a ******** military tech grab in the Gulf region. The latest in a line of AI deals that Microsoft has struck in the UAE this year, it is the fruit of a strategic partnership the US struck with the Gulf state in September to entwine the UAE with US strategic interests and technology, after it started investing its oil wealth in a plan to become an AI superpower. It also entrenches Microsoft’s place at the crux of the environmental crisis, pledging to help one of the world’s largest oil firms use AI to become a net-zero producer of carbon emissions, while getting help in return in building renewable energy sources to feed the unprecedented demand that the datacentres powering its AI services have for electricity. The same paradox was played out at the COP 28 climate conference in Dubai last December, while Microsoft prepared to ink a $1.5bn investment in UAE state-owned AI and datacentre conglomerate G42, where Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, ADNOC oil chief, chaired a global agreement to ditch fossil fuels. But the agreement raises a question of why Microsoft needs the partnership to explore the potential for renewables to power AI, when a considerable proportion of electricity required to run the power-hungry computers in the world’s datacentres already comes from renewable sources. This came after massive investments by US big tech firms, and when a third party in the deal is Masdar, the renewables arm of a UEA sovereign wealth fund, set up to invest the state’s oil wealth in renewables. This helped the Gulf state attain a similar place in the world’s top 10 rankings for solar power output as it has in oil production. Masdar’s investments include the ***’s Dogger Bank wind farm, set to become the world’s largest. Power struggle It is a crucial question for UAE, which has established its credentials in making some of the most notable breakthroughs in AI tech in recent years. This includes the Falcon large language model, which is compared for its acumen with well-known AI engines operated by US big tech firms, and is the world’s first Arabic AI model. The petrostate seeks to be a world leader in AI, while the global energy transition strips it of the oil and gas wealth upon which its economy was until recently almost entirely dependent. Al Jaber, who is also UAE industry minister, characterised these last weeks as a crisis, worsened by an anticipated population surge across the southern hemisphere, and by the unexpected and exponential growth in demand for power from datacentres housing AI computer systems. It is a crucial matter for UAE because the weather in the Middle East is so hot that it takes 50% more energy to cool a datacentre there than in the cooler northern reaches where most datacentres operate, according to Tassos Peppas, regional director of Vertiv, a supplier of datacentre power and cooling systems crucial for running the prized Nvidia computer chips crucial for the big AI systems. “The Middle East is not the best place for energy efficiency,” he said. No matter that energy in the Gulf was typically 90% cheaper than Europe, and that the same datacentre, on balance, would cost up to 80% less than one in Europe. Unanticipated until 18 months ago, the UAE has now called for a boost in all forms of cleaner energy, including the liquid natural gas to which the country has turned to as a less-polluting fossil fuel export than the oil, which is still a primary source of power across those countries where populations are booming and economies are industrialising fast, Al Jaber told a global conference of oil and energy chiefs, and state officials from across the southern hemisphere. Those countries, across *******, Southeast and Central Asia, and the ****** subcontinent, where UAE has a long tradition of trade, have become a destination for Emirate investments in AI, energy and port infrastructure. The firms Microsoft has been doing business with have all been spreading their influence by making such AI investments across the wider region. Microsoft itself did a $1bn AI deal with the UAE in Kenya in May. Gateway to growth That explains both Microsoft and US motives in the Gulf state, as UAE AI minister Omar Sultan Al Olama put it in an interview with US think tank Atlantic Council when the software giant took its massive stake in G42 in in April. UAE is a “gateway” to *******, Southeast Asia and India. He likened great power competition in AI, and international negotiations over AI regulation such as the ***’s own Bletchley Park summit, to the Cold War nuclear arms race. “UAE is the perfect hub where the US can showcase its technology for the rest of the developing world in a way that asserts its supremacy in this domain,” he said. UAE’s Falcon AI was a vehicle the US could use to assert that supremacy, because it was known and trusted in *******, for example, while Falcon would benefit from getting access to advanced US AI technology. That trade-off came at the expense last year of G42 purging its systems and datacentres of ******** technology, paving the way for a strategic deal with the US two months ago, and a series of tie-ups. These included a $100bn investment fund that Microsoft formed with US financial giants BlackRock and Global Infrastructure Partners, and UAE state-owned AI investor MGX. Microsoft president Brad Smith joined UN environment envoy Mark Carney and the CEOs of most major oil firms to agree on the eve of the energy conference that the crisis was so great that it would need gas, as well as nuclear and renewables, to solve it. The software giant’s latest contribution will be the AI engine for a UAE effort to make its fossil gas exports more competitive, as well as its energy system greener. Microsoft will help run a national infrastructure of energy grid battery plants UAE needs to store output from what it claims is the world’s largest solar farm, as it completes construction in the next five years. Al Jaber, sitting on the boards of most of the firms involved, as well as running the industry ministry, and Microsoft’s Smith, will be at the centre of it all. The stand comes fully assembled on the weighted base, but it’s pretty easy to switch to the clamp thanks to the included instructions and basic tools in the box. If you spring for the latest model, it’ll be even easier thanks to a new quick-switch tab that lets you swap between the weighted base and the clamp attachment with any extra tools. It wasn’t hard to secure my 11-inch iPad Pro in the vice-grip that is the HoverBar Duo’s tablet clip, although it did take some force to move the arm into the right position. That’s probably for the best because it showed how strong the arm is; it stayed in place without buckling, sliding down or otherwise breaking a sweat. It’s not designed specifically for the iPad, but it works quite well with it. It combines a lot of the ergonomics and the general look and feel of the MX lineup into a compact and portable keyboard. The Keys Mini has a slim profile that’s slightly raised due to its top bar, plus comfortable backlit keys that are a dream to type on. The backlight is one of my favorite features because it automatically comes on when it senses your hands getting close to the keyboard. That way it only stays illuminated when you’re typing, conserving battery life in the long run. Logitech estimates the Keys Mini will last up to 10 days, depending on backlight use, or up to five months without any backlight use. Logitech’s $100 MX Keys Mini may be on the expensive side, but it’s one that could be both your iPad keyboard and your main desk typing device. It can connect to up to three devices at the same time, allowing you to swap between them quickly with just a press of a key, and it has a few other handy keys too like one that brings up the emoji picker and another that mutes your microphone (quite useful on Zoom calls). But if you want an iPad keyboard that’s even more affordable, or even thinner, we still like the Logitech Keys to Go, which we’ve recommended in the past and you can usually find for between $50 and $70. — V.P. $96 at Amazon Apple If you really want to indulge, Apple’s own Magic Keyboard is the way to go. We praised the Magic Keyboard for its typing comfort and precise trackpad, but dinged it for its limited range of motion. It’s easily the fanciest keyboard case available for the iPad and it’s one to consider if money is no object — or if you want the most stylish iPad keyboard money can buy. — V.P. $225 at Amazon Apple This likely won’t come as a surprise, but the Apple Pencil Pro is the best stylus you can get for the iPad. All models of the Apple Pencil are designed to work specifically with iPads and it shows in their smooth writing performance. The latest stylus has a double-tap feature that you can customize to a certain degree, and pressure-sensitivity allows you to add as much or as little detail as you want to digital artwork. Plus, it still supports wireless charging when you snap it magnetically to the side of your tablet. I highly recommend shelling out the extra money for an Apple Pencil if you’re an artist — you won’t be disappointed. — V.P. $94 at Amazon Logitech There are other options that are more affordable than the Apple Pencil, though, like Logitech’s Crayon. It’s just as good in terms of latency and accuracy — drawing in Procreate was a lag-free experience and my strokes always ended up exactly where I wanted them to be – and it’s even more grippy by default thanks to its oval-shaped design. But as someone who primarily uses an Apple Pencil for digital art, I missed pressure sensitivity when using the Crayon. Aside from that, the other biggest annoyance is that you have to use a Lightning or USB-C cable to charge it. It has most ports that you could ever want, with the only exception being an Ethernet jack. The slim dongle houses two USB-A ports, two USB-C connections, SD and microSD card slots and a 4K/30Hz HDMI port. We also like that it provides up to 85W of pass-through charging, which means you can power up your iPad while using Anker’s hub as the main connector between the tablet and its charging cable. Anker makes a couple of versions of this hub, including one that does have that coveted Ethernet port, but it’s hard to beat $35 for the standard 7-in-1 model. — V.P. $35 at Amazon Anker Apple and other tech companies are increasingly leaving wall adapters out of their devices’ boxes, so it’s worth picking up a couple that can handle charging a couple of pieces of tech as quickly as possible. Anker’s 45W Nano II GaN adapter is a good one because it can fast-charge iPhones and iPads, plus the gallium nitride technology built into it helps prevent overheating. In just a half hour of charging, I got about a 33 percent boost in battery life on my 11-inch iPad Pro when using this accessory. The Moon’s furthest point from the Earth is known as apogee. When it is at its closest we call it perigee. And when the full Moon – which occurs roughly every 29.5 days – coincides with the Moon’s perigee, it appears ******* and brighter than usual and so we call it a supermoon. Supermoons are not particularly rare. In fact there are generally three or four each year. This year has already brought three consecutive supermoons – the Blue moon in August, September’s Harvest moon and the Hunter’s moon in October, which was the brightest of all. The ******* Moon will not be quite as bright but it still qualifies as a supermoon. It will be almost 14,000 miles (roughly 23,000km) closer to Earth than normal, with astronomers saying it will look around 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual – although it may be hard to tell the difference with the ****** eye. ‘I started a club to make new friends’ ‘I started a club to make new friends’ BBC Emma wants to find friends to talk about “really weird stuff” like her love of time travel fiction The day Emma Shores was diagnosed with autism has become such a defining moment in her ****** life that she celebrates it like a “second birthday”. The first thing on her mind when she got the news was making friends with other people living with autism, people she felt might truly understand her for the first time in her life. “I thought maybe I’ll feel less like an alien,” she said. But things were not that easy. Emma had been in her mid-20s, living in London, and following her dream of becoming a primary school teacher when she had what she describes as a “major meltdown”. Her life derailed, she was taken in by mental health services, misdiagnosed as having a mental illness, given medication and therapy. Emma moved away to be with family in rural Wales – and then by chance during a therapy session, she said someone spotted she might have autism instead. It meant that by the point she was ready to understand herself and looking for friends to help her navigate her new world – she was living in a rural town, far away from most of what she knew. Emma is turning down the lights in the local cafe for her group’s first meeting “After the diagnosis I remember I started feeling really happy,” said the 33-year-old. “But there was also a bit of grief too, because I wasn’t going to be this person I’d had the idea of being.” Emma tried looking for groups that might help her make friends. She had also just become a mum, so tried parenting groups as well but found them loud and overstimulating. Then she heard about a new project designed to encourage people with autism to start their own social clubs. It appealed to her straightaway. “For me, feeling alone was like having a native language that’s different to everyone else around you,” said Emma. “I think the main reason I want to start a club is to help others, to make my son proud one day. I also don’t want anyone to feel that sense of loneliness I have.” Feelings of loneliness and isolation The project, run by the National Autistic Society (NAS), aims to encourage adults living with autism to start their own peer support groups, where members can regularly meet for activities such as bowling, pizza or games nights. Research by the charity suggested 80% of adults living with autism experience feelings of loneliness and isolation. “Some of the things that we get regularly are around not being confident with people who are used to being bullied or picked on,” said Simon Humphreys, who started the first social club for people living with autism in Colwyn Bay. “They don’t like to mix and they feel very vulnerable. “People just feel desperate and alone. At least this way we are talking and developing a friendship family.” Those attending the friendship clubs say they can “geek out” without *****. Like Emma, former wrestler and hospice worker, Emrys Forrester also only found out he was living with autism in his mid-20s. He said attending Simon’s group in Colwyn Bay had helped him to understand who he was. “I’ve always felt like a socially awkward person,” he said. “As an ******, once you’re diagnosed you get the paperwork and stuff but then you’re off. In Abergavenny, it is her love of time travel fiction that Emma dreams of sharing with potential new friends. Together with local councillor Kyle Elridge, who also lives with autism, Emma is starting the Abergavenny spectrum social. If successful, it will be the eighth group in Wales, with plans by NAS to roll the project out in England shortly. “It’ll be super special and cosy,” said Emma. “I’m hoping I’ll just grab a few drinks and talk about really weird stuff. “None of that normal support group kind of stuff.
