Liam Ryan fight: West Coast Eagles star cleared of any wrongdoing by WA Police and AFL Integrity Unit
West Coast star Liam Ryan has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the AFL following his involvement in a street fight in Perth last month.
The 28-year-old was filmed in a violent altercation in Fremantle on January 17, with the Eagles and AFL Integrity Unit launching an investigation.
Ryan was leaving Juicy Fest at Fremantle Oval with his partner at the time of the incident.
In a statement released on Monday, the AFL said it had concluded its inquires into the video that surfaced the following day.
“The AFL Integrity Unit inquiries and investigations by WA Police determined that the altercation occurred after Ryan and his companions were the victims of an attack by a larger group of people whilst leaving the event,” the statement read.
Camera IconThe fight. Credit: 7NEWS
“WA Police confirmed to the AFL that officers were in the area at the time of the fight and that Ryan was being treated as a witness to an incident where his group was pursued by a larger group, resulting in one of his female companions being assaulted and suffering facial injuries.
“It was determined that Ryan attempted to de-escalate the incident and walk away from the group before being confronted, leading to the fight that was captured on social media.
“WA Police have advised the AFL that they intend to take no action against Ryan as a result of the matter and that he was cooperative and assisted the police by attending and providing police statements.
“It should also be noted that Ryan was not drinking on the night and was driving.
“The AFL will take no further action.”
With Ryan cleared of wrongdoing, the premiership Eagle remains free to play in the upcoming Indigenous All Stars clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium on February 15.

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Unidentified attackers raided cattle camps in a southeastern area of South Sudan last week, killing at least 35 people and wounding 46, a community leader said.
Cattle raiding linked to competition for scarce resources is one of the main triggers of conflict between ethnic groups in the country awash with weapons after decades of war.
“On January 31, the Dinka Bor cattle camps were attacked,” the leader, Mayom Ateny, told Reuters on Sunday, giving details of the deaths and injuries in the four camps targeted.

He added that 11,000 head of cattle were taken.
Olum Pole Pole Ataruk, the commissioner of Magwi county, the site of the attacks, and Elia John Ahaji, the information minister of Eastern Equatoria state home to the county, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Cattle are an important indicator of wealth and status in South Sudan, and are usually given as a bride price to a woman’s family as gifts ranging in number from fewer than 10 head to several hundred.
Nicholas Haysom, the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), expressed concern about escalating violence between cattle keepers and farming communities in Eastern Equatoria.
“Such attacks and counter-attacks must stop,” Haysom said in a statement that condemned the violence and urged all parties to show restraint.
A civil war in South Sudan from 2013 to 2018 caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and although the main belligerents have since been at peace, clashes continue among armed groups.

Samsung’s Tri-Fold Phone Name Leaked Online, Tipped for January 2026 Launch
Samsung’s Tri-Fold Phone Name Leaked Online, Tipped for January 2026 Launch
Huawei stunned smartphone enthusiasts last year by launching the world’s first triple-screen foldable phone — Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design. Samsung is all set to fight back against the competition by introducing its own tri-fold phone. The South Korean brand teased its first multi-fold phone during its Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event. Now, a new leak has surfaced online that hints at the possible name of the device. The Samsung Tri-fold phone is likely to come with a 10-inch display.
Tipster Yeux1122 on the South Korean blog Naver suggested that Samsung’s multi-fold phone will be called the ‘Galaxy G Fold’, following the naming pattern of its Z Fold series. Citing industry sources and display analyst Ross Young the tipster states that the handset will be released in January next year.
Samsung’s purported Galaxy G Fold is said to feature a 9.96-inch display, larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch screen. It is said to measure 6.54 inches when folded. The folding mechanism of Samsung’s tri-fold phone is said to be different from the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design. The upcoming handset is said to have a folding mechanism that lets the display fold inward from both sides.
The blog post mentions that the weight of the Galaxy G Fold will be about the same as “H”, and this could be a reference to Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design. However, Samsung’s tri-foldable handset is tipped to be slightly thicker. The Galaxy G Fold will reportedly use newly developed displays and protective films.
During the recently concluded Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, Jay Kim, Head of Products and Experiences Office at Samsung offered a brief glimpse at the company’s long-rumoured tri-folding phone. The brand is expected to manufacture 3,00,000 units (or less) of the triple folding phone, which is said to come with a high price tag.

Pylons v people – battle lines drawn over ***’s green energy plans
Pylons v people – battle lines drawn over ***’s green energy plans
BBC
“I think we’re being sacrificed,” explains Eileen West of Deeside Against Pylons to Justin Rowlatt
Eileen West has a strange object in her home in Aberdeenshire – a scale model of a huge electricity pylon, built as part of a local campaign against the “monstrous” metal structures.
A new pylon line is proposed just a few hundred metres from her home. The steel towers will typically be 187ft (57m) high – significantly taller than most pylons in Scotland. Some could be as high as 246ft (75m).
They are part of a planned 66-mile (106km) route – between the town of Kintore and the village of Tealing – to transfer power from wind farms off the north-east coast of Scotland to where the electricity is needed.
“I think we’re being sacrificed,” says Eileen, a member of Deeside Against Pylons.
The plans are part of one of the government’s key missions, a drive to decarbonise the ***’s electricity system by 2030. Just over half of our power currently comes from wind, solar, nuclear and biomass – organic matter. The government wants to raise that to 95% by 2030 – just five years’ time.
The target is ambitious, and controversial. Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, told the BBC it is essential to “cut bills, tackle the climate crisis and give us energy security”.
But are local concerns being overlooked to meet national objectives?
BBC Panorama has travelled across the *** – to Aberdeenshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk – to hear from people in landscapes bracing for change, including Oscar-nominated actor Ralph Fiennes.
Ed Miliband says the government is committed to supporting communities affected by major projects
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to take on the “naysayers” and “Nimbys” [Not in My Back Yard], who he says stand in the way of national growth by making repeated legal challenges to planning decisions.
That message was underscored last week. Chancellor Rachel Reeves vowed to go “further and faster” in her effort to deliver the government’s growth agenda as she announced a series of potentially controversial new infrastructure projects, including backing plans for a third runway at Heathrow.
A huge construction effort would also be needed to meet the 2030 clean energy target, Mr Miliband told Panorama.
“You need the solar farms, you need the rooftop solar. You need onshore wind, you need offshore wind, you need nuclear. You need all of these things,” he says.
It will also mean more pylons, cables and substations. But what about the local communities who told us they felt they were not being heard and feared their concerns would be overridden?
“The answer is to listen to local people but to make decisions. That’s what our country needs,” Mr Milliband says.
He says the government has committed to provide direct benefits to affected communities via community funds, he adds. People who live near transmission lines could also have discounts on their energy bills.
But Mr Miliband also says: “I can’t say to you local people will have a veto over individual projects in their area.”
For those living in the shadow of these new clean energy projects, the government’s promise to “streamline” the planning process sounds like an excuse for finding new ways to ignore them.
In Aberdeenshire, Eileen West denies she is a Nimby, she says the pylons should not be built anywhere.
“These things will be standing for another 100 years. That’s not a legacy we want to leave our future generations.”
While not against green-energy ambitions, she argues that the government should be exploring alternatives that are less disruptive to the landscape.
“This is outdated, archaic technology. In Europe they do better, investing in proper, modern undergrounding and offshore,” Eileen says.
The Climate Change Committee, an independent body that advises the government on the most efficient way to achieve its climate targets, says the industry has reasons for choosing pylons.
“One of which is cost, in many cases, it’s the cheapest route to delivering clean electricity to people from where it’s produced,” says chief executive Emma Pinchbeck. “And that’s important because ultimately consumers are paying for that infrastructure on their energy bills.
“The second is technical. We’re talking about high voltage lines in many cases. These are really big cables and it’s often better for the physics of the energy system to have them up in the air and accessible.”
Actor Ralph Fiennes has joined Fiona Gilmore’s campaign group, which is called Suffolk Energy Action Solutions
On a windswept beach in Suffolk, we meet Oscar-nominated actor Ralph Fiennes, who is part of a group opposing infrastructure plans in the county where he was born and now lives.
“Governments can, with easy disdain, use the word ‘Nimby’,” he says. “It’s easy, but they don’t live here.”
The county is a potential hub for new energy projects. Miles of trenches may be dug for cabling, large new electricity substations and converter stations have been proposed, and plans for offshore wind farms have already been approved.
Like Eileen in Aberdeenshire, Fiennes questions the impact on the local landscape and whether alternatives like building offshore grid infrastructure and using undersea cabling so the electricity can be brought ashore on former industrial sites are being overlooked.
“We need this energy. The planet is lost without it,” he says. “But what’s the best version of bringing in this green, clean energy?”
Farmer William Rose uses solar panels to power his grain-drying barn
William Rose meets us on the farm in Lincolnshire he has run for more than half a century. Nearby, three large solar farms have been approved and another is proposed. Soon the fields could be full of ordered ranks of metal frames holding millions of shiny solar panels.
Like many other protestors, William isn’t opposed to renewable power in principle – he has rooftop solar panels on one of his barns and a small number in a field which power his grain-drying barn.
But he says local farmers are being offered a lot more for hosting solar panels than they could earn growing crops in their fields.
“Generally on corn arable land, you’d expect a return of maybe £200 an acre,” William explains. “And they’re being offered £1,000 an acre a year, index linked for 50 years.”
But he says this comes at a different cost. “What they’re doing is consigning the countryside to this industrial wasteland of solar panels.”
Ed Miliband says the changes would benefit businesses and families across the *** who have been affected by the cost of living crisis – which he says was caused by dependency on fossil fuel markets “controlled by dictators and petrostates”.
But is that worth the impact on local communities and landscapes?
“I’ll have a profound sense of sadness that there would be the desecration of this part of England when there is a better alternative,” Ralph Fiennes says.
Ed Miliband now has the tricky task of striking a balance between those kind of local concerns and his big national target.

Former Upper House politician and current Albany councillor Lynn MacLaren runs with Greens for Albany seat
Former Upper House politician and current Albany councillor Lynn MacLaren runs with Greens for Albany seat
Former member of the WA Legislative Council and current Albany councillor Lynn MacLaren has joined the race for the Albany State seat, throwing her hat in as the Greens’ candidate.
Ms MacLaren announced her candidacy on Wednesday at a launch party and detailed a platform of environmental advocacy, careful urban planning to address the growing city’s needs, and inclusivity.
The Colorado-born politician first served as MLC for the South Metropolitan region in 2005, and then again from 2009-2017.
Among her achievements in her eight years in Parliament was drafting five private Bills — one being the 2012 Climate Change Readiness Bill to help guide coastal planning that was the first climate change legislation in WA.
In her role as a councillor, she serves on the South Coast Alliance, the WA Local Government Association Great Southern Zone, and the Development Assessment panel .
As an Albany resident, she is involved with the Friends of Yakamia Boodja group, Albany Port Rotary, Soroptomists, Cinefest, the Albany Bird Group, and she is a co-convenor of the Albany Community Environment Centre.
Ms MacLaren said she hoped to speak for the diverse range of voices in the Albany community and she would be proud to advocate for a region that “supports its most vulnerable”.
“Albany will and can get behind you if you’re a voice for inclusivity, respect and kindness,” she said.
“The fact that Albany supports its own hospice and has done for years, and takes up initiatives for homelessness and other mental health programs, is great.
“Albany is prepared to mobilise and do what it can for the community, and that community would be well served by someone who speaks up for the vulnerable and those with a bit of kindness.”
Ms Maclaren will face a battle against Rebecca Stephens (Labor), Thomas Brough (Liberals), Scott Leary (Nationals) and Gerrit Ballast (*********** Christians) for the Albany seat.
She stepped in as a last-minute replacement for former North Metropolitan region MLC Giz Watson, who was the initial Albany candidate for the Greens.

******** AI model could not stop a single harmful prompt
******** AI model could not stop a single harmful prompt
Headline-hitting DeepSeek R1, a new chatbot by a ******** startup, has failed abysmally in key safety and security tests conducted by a research team at Cisco in collaboration with researchers from the University of Pennsylvania.
“DeepSeek R1 exhibited a 100% attack success rate, meaning it failed to block a single harmful prompt,” said the research team.
This new chatbot has garnered massive attention for its impressive performance in reasoning tasks at a fraction of the cost. Reportedly, DeepSeek R1’s development involved around $6 million in training expenses compared to the billions invested by other major players like OpenAI, Meta, and Gemini.
“DeepSeek has combined chain-of-thought prompting and reward modeling with distillation to create models that significantly outperform traditional large language models (LLMs) in reasoning tasks while maintaining high operational efficiency,” explained the team.
However, the Cisco report has exposed flaws that render DeepSeek R1 highly susceptible to malicious use.
“Our findings suggest that DeepSeek’s claimed cost-efficient training methods, including reinforcement learning, chain-of-thought self-evaluation, and distillation may have compromised its safety mechanisms,” added the report.
Researchers used algorithmic jailbreaking
The team employed “algorithmic jailbreaking,” a technique used to identify vulnerabilities in AI models by constructing prompts designed to bypass safety protocols. They tested DeepSeek R1 against 50 prompts from the HarmBench dataset.
“The HarmBench benchmark has a total of 400 behaviors across 7 harm categories including cybercrime, misinformation, ******** activities, and general harm,” highlighted the team.
The results of this evaluation are concerning. DeepSeek R1 exhibited a 100% attack success rate. This means that for every single harmful prompt presented, the AI failed to recognize the danger and provided a response, bypassing all its internal safeguards.
“This contrasts starkly with other leading models, which demonstrated at least partial resistance,” said the team.
To provide further context, the research team also tested other leading language models for their vulnerability to algorithmic jailbreaking. For example, Llama 3.1-405B had a 96% attack success rate, GPT 4o had 86%, Gemini 1.5 pro had 64%, Claude 3.5 Sonnet had 36%, and O1 preview had 26%.
These other models, while not impervious, possess some level of internal safeguards designed to prevent the generation of harmful content. DeepSeek R1 appears to lack these safeguards.
Controversies surrounding DeepSeek R1
The research team’s analysis points to a potential trade-off between efficiency and safety in DeepSeek’s approach. While the company has succeeded in developing a high-performing model at a fraction of the usual cost, it appears to have done so at the expense of robust safety mechanisms.
“Our findings suggest that DeepSeek’s claimed cost-efficient training methods, including reinforcement learning, chain-of-thought self-evaluation, and distillation may have compromised its safety mechanisms,” concluded the researchers.
Notably, since its launch, DeepSeek R1 has faced several controversies. Recently, independent research company SemiAnalysis suggested that the training cost of developing this AI model could have been around a staggering $1.3 billion, much higher than the company’s claim of $6 million.
Besides, OpenAI has accused DeepSeek of data theft. Sam Altman’s company said that the ******** AI startup has used its proprietary models’ outputs to train a competing chatbot. However, it is interesting to note that OpenAI itself has been sued for alleged copyright infringement and data misuse on multiple occasions.
Meanwhile, a group of researchers in the United States have claimed to reproduce the core technology behind DeepSeek’s headline-grabbing AI at a total cost of roughly $30.
While developing an AI chatbot in a cost-effective way is certainly tempting, the Cisco report underscores the need for not neglecting safety and security for performance.

‘Paves the way to Audi’s all-electric future’
‘Paves the way to Audi’s all-electric future’
A new electric vehicle announced by Audi features a quick charge time despite its large size. The Q6 e-tron car is a two-row SUV that can charge from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes.
This addition to Audi’s EV lineup delivers a 33% improvement in performance and a 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to its other EVs, according to Green Car Reports. The new series includes four models to choose from.
“The Audi Q6 e-tron marks the start of a new generation of electrically powered vehicles at Audi,” the carmaker said on its website. “With a new platform, electronics architecture, charging and battery technology, as well as a pioneering design for Audi, the Q6 e-tron paves the way to Audi’s all-electric future.”
Premium Platform Electric is a dedicated EV platform Audi is sharing with Porsche’s Macan EV. The Q6 e-tron is Audi’s first launch on the PPE platform, though it plans to add more cars to it in the future.
Switching to an EV can seem like a daunting task for drivers who don’t know much about going electric.
People assume that EVs are exorbitantly expensive, or they’re wary of finding places to charge their car and how long it might take to do so. There are also misconceptions about the environmental impact of mining for elements needed in battery production.
Watch now: McDonald’s just changed up its most iconic menu item
These factors can be a major deterrent for those who are considering an EV. But it’s important to note that 16.5 billion tons of fossil fuels are dug out of the Earth every year. For comparison, the clean energy transition will require just 30 million tons of minerals per year.
New EV models are also getting cheaper and easier to manage as they grow in popularity and as technology advances to make them more efficient. Drivers who go electric save money on routine maintenance and fuel, and they also help reduce dirty fuel demand and the amount of harmful pollution released into the air.

Poco F7 Global Variant Reportedly Spotted on EEC Certification Site, Expected to Launch Soon
Poco F7 Global Variant Reportedly Spotted on EEC Certification Site, Expected to Launch Soon
Poco F7 has been the subject of numerous rumours in recent weeks, alongside the speculated Poco F7 Pro and Poco F7 Ultra variants. Earlier reports suggested that the higher-end Pro and Ultra models are unlikely to launch in India. However, a “special edition” variant is expected to debut alongside the standard model in the country. Now, the global version of the Poco F7 has reportedly been listed on a certification site, hinting at its imminent availability in Europe.
Poco F7 Global Variant EEC Listing
The Poco F7 with the model number 25053PC47G was spotted on the European Economic Community (EEC) database, according to a report by The Tech Outlook. It appears with the notification number KZ0000009843 and the listing suggests the certification will be valid till December 31, 2034, the report added.
The ‘G’ in the model number indicates that this is the global variant of the purported Poco F7. The EEC listing also suggests that the phone will be available in European markets. However, it does not reveal any other specifications or features of the handset.
Earlier reports have claimed that the vanilla Poco F7 could launch with similar features as the Redmi Turbo 4, which was unveiled in China in January. The handset could be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400-Ultra SoC and ship with Android 15-based HyperOS 2.0. It is expected to sport a 6.67-inch 1.5K OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection and Dolby Vision support.
For optics, the Poco F7 could be equipped with a 50-megapixel primary rear sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 20-megapixel selfie camera. For security, the handset could carry an in-display fingerprint sensor. It may be backed by a 6,550mAh battery with support for 90W wired fast charging.
Notably, the Poco F7 Ultra has been tipped to be “exclusive to global sectors.” The Pro variant is expected to launch in select global markets alongside the base Poco F7.

3 more massage therapists accuse Ravens’ Tucker of ********* inappropriate conduct, report says
BALTIMORE (AP) — Three additional massage therapists have accused Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker of ********* inappropriate conduct, the Baltimore Banner reported Saturday.
The news website said nine massage therapists from five spas and wellness centers now have shared accounts with the Banner. In its initial report Thursday, the Banner said it spoke to six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with Tucker from 2012 to 2016. Several therapists said they ended Tucker’s sessions early or refused to work on him again, and managers from two spas said they banned him from returning.
Tucker said Thursday in a statement that he has never received any complaints from a massage therapist or been told he was not welcome at a spa or other place of business.
The NFL has said it will look into the matter, and the Ravens said they would continue to monitor the situation.

Men’s bodies swept kilometres by deadly floodwaters
Men’s bodies swept kilometres by deadly floodwaters
A man who drove into floodwaters with two people on the back of his ute is facing trial for manslaughter after both were swept away and drowned.
The bodies of 30-year-old Ghosn Ghosn and 32-year-old Bob Chahine were found several days later, having been washed as far as two kilometres downstream.
Jawad Al Hussein pleaded not guilty as he faced two counts of manslaughter and two alternative charges of dangerous driving resulting in the men’s deaths.
The 43-year-old was behind the wheel as a group of four men attempted to cross a flooded causeway at Prestons Creek in Bevendale, in the NSW Southern Tablelands, about 8.30pm on October 31, 2022.
Neither of the deceased men could swim and they clung helplessly to the stricken vehicle as it was swept out of sight, a jury was told as the trial began in the District Court at Goulburn on Monday,
Appearing as the first witness, Mr Chahine’s wife Ramonda tearfully recounted a final phone call with her husband moments before the men entered the water.
“He said ‘I have to go it’s raining’,” she told the court.
“(He said )it was raining very heavily.
“The next morning I sent him a message saying ‘good morning’ and it didn’t go through.”
According to prosecutors, the vehicle stalled almost as soon as it entered the “very fast-flowing and relatively deep water” and was quickly swept off the causeway.
Crown prosecutor Glen Porter said during his opening address that the vehicle was not equipped with a “snorkel” external air intake which caused it to stall.
“He drove into those floodwaters knowing or believing that there was a significant risk that his vehicle would stall (and) that both passengers could not swim,” Mr Porter said.
While Al Hussein and another man who was inside the ute’s cab at the time were able to swim to safety, the two others either jumped or were swept from the vehicle and disappeared, the jury heard.
Their bodies were found several days later having been swept 1.2km and 2km from the causeway.
The causeway was a short distance from a hobby farm owned by Al Hussein, where the group were headed on the evening of the incident.
Defence barrister James Lang described Al Hussein’s actions as an error of judgment and said it does not meet the threshold for manslaughter.
“Everyone in their life makes errors of judgment,” he said.
“This error of judgment in a very short space of time resulted in the very unfortunate loss of life of two men”
Other witnesses expected to be called during the 10-day trial include a floodwater expert, members of NSW Police Polair and ****** investigation units, and members of the NSW SES.
Calls made by Al Hussein to triple zero after the incident will also be played as evidence and the jury will visit the site where the incident occurred.
The trial continues on Tuesday.

Zelenskyy says excluding Ukraine from US-Russia talks about war is ‘very dangerous’
Zelenskyy says excluding Ukraine from US-Russia talks about war is ‘very dangerous’
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that excluding his country from talks between the U.S. and Russia about the war in Ukraine would be “very dangerous” and asked for more discussions between Kyiv and Washington to develop a plan for a ceasefire.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Zelenskyy said Russia does not want to engage in ceasefire talks or to discuss any kind of concessions, which the Kremlin interprets as losing at a time when its troops have the upper hand on the battlefield.
He said U.S. President Donald Trump could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the table with the threat of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and banking system, as well as continued support of the Ukrainian military.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
“I think these are the closest and most important steps,” he said in the interview in the Ukrainian capital that lasted for more than an hour.
Zelenskyy’s remarks followed comments Friday by Trump, who said American and Russian officials were “already talking” about ending the war. Trump said his administration has had “very serious” discussions with Russia, but he did not elaborate.
“They may have their own relations, but talking about Ukraine without us — it is dangerous for everyone,” Zelenskyy said.
He said his team has been in contact with the Trump administration, but those discussions are at a “general level,” and he believes in-person meetings will take place soon to develop more detailed agreements.
“We need to work more on this,” he said, adding that Trump understandably appeared to be focused on domestic issues in the first weeks after his inauguration.
The nearly three-year war in Ukraine is at a crossroads. Trump promised to end the fighting within six months of taking office, but the two sides are far apart, and it is unclear how a ceasefire deal would take shape. Meanwhile, Russia continues to make slow but steady gains along the front, and Ukrainian forces are enduring severe manpower shortages.
Most Ukrainians want a pause in fighting to rebuild their lives. The country faces near-daily Russian attacks on homes, and strikes on power systems have plunged entire cities into darkness.
Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, unable to return to their homes after vast tracts of the country’s east have been reduced to rubble. Nearly a fifth of Ukraine is now occupied by Russia. In those areas, Moscow-appointed authorities are swiftly erasing any hint of Ukrainian identity.
With Trump back in the White House, Ukraine’s relationship with the U.S., its largest and most important ally, is also at a tipping point.
In an initial phone call with Trump during the presidential campaign, Zelenskyy said, the two agreed that if Trump won, they would meet to discuss the steps needed to end the war. But a planned visit by Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, was postponed “for legal reasons” Zelenskyy said. That was followed by a sudden foreign aid freeze that effectively caused Ukrainian organizations to halt projects.
“I believe that, first and foremost, we (must) hold a meeting with him, and that is important. And that is, by the way, something that everyone in Europe wants,” Zelenskyy said, referring to “a common vision of a quick end to the war.”
After the conversation with Trump, “we should move on to some kind of format of conversation with Russians. And I would like to see the United States of America, Ukraine and the Russians at the negotiating table. … And, to be honest, a European Union voice should also be there. I think it would be fair, effective. But how will it turn out? I don’t know.”
Zelenskyy cautioned against allowing Putin to take “control” over the war, an apparent reference to Russia’s repeated threats of escalation during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Without security guarantees from Ukraine’s allies, Zelenskyy said, any deal struck with Russia would only serve as a precursor to future aggression. Membership in the NATO alliance, a longstanding wish for Kyiv that Moscow has categorically rejected, is still Zelenskyy’s top choice.
NATO membership is the “cheapest” option for Ukraine’s allies, and it would also strengthen Trump geopolitically, Zelenskyy argued.
“I really believe that these are the cheapest security guarantees that Ukraine can get, the cheapest for everyone,” he said.
“It will be a signal that it is not for Russia to decide who should be in NATO and who should not, but for the United States of America to decide. I think this is a great victory for Trump,” he said, evidently appealing to the president’s penchant for winners and business deals.
In addition, Zelenskyy said, Ukraine’s 800,000-strong army would be a bonus to the alliance, especially if Trump seeks to bring home U.S. troops who are stationed overseas.
Other security guarantee proposals should be backed up by sufficient weapons from the U.S. and Europe, and support for Kyiv to develop its own defense industry, he said.
Zelenskyy also said a French proposal to put European forces in Ukraine to act as a deterrent against Russian aggression is taking shape, but he expressed skepticism, saying many questions remained about the command-and-control structure and the number of troops and their positions. The issue was raised by French President Emmanuel Macron and with Trump, he said.
“I said in the presence of the two leaders that we are interested in this as a part of the security guarantee, but not as the only guarantee of safety,” he said. “That’s not enough.”
He added: “Imagine, there is a contingent. The question is who is in charge? Who is the main one? What will they do if there are Russian strikes? Missiles, disembarkation, attack from the sea, crossing of the land borderline, offensive. What will they do? What are their mandates?”
Asked if he put those questions directly to Macron, he smiled and said: “We are still in the process of this dialogue.”
Following a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the war has set Ukraine back by 100 years, Zelenskyy urged Rubio to visit Ukraine.
Rubio “needs to come to Ukraine, first of all, to see what Russia has done,” the Ukrainian president said. “But also to see what the Ukrainian people did, what they were able to do for the security of Ukraine and the world, as I said, and just talk to these people.”

Premier Roger Cook urges police to ‘throw the book’ at anti-semitic vandals
Premier Roger Cook urges police to ‘throw the book’ at anti-semitic vandals
The Premier hopes police will “throw the book” at vandals who spray-painted homes in Perth’s western suburbs with vile anti-semitic graffiti.
Three Perth suburbs saw a wave of anti-Jewish graffiti at the weekend, including a Nazi swastika and the words “f… Jews” sprayed onto a brick wall on a home along Viking Road in Dalkeith.
Just a few hundred metres away on the same affluent street, a For ***** sign was tagged with the words “WA Labor nazis”.
Similar anti-Semitic graffiti occured at a property in Langford as well as on a campaign sign for Labor’ Mt Lawley candidate, Frank Paolino.
Roger Cook on Monday said he would leave it up police to determine the motivations, but vowed authorities would “stop at nothing” to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our State Security Intelligence Unit has got deep insights into these incidences, and we know that they will stop at nothing until someone is apprehended for these vile acts,” Mr Cook said.
The Premier said some of the incidents may be because of “young thugs” copying what they have seen reported on “east coast media”, who might be trying to “get a rise” and “some attention”.
“Others are motivated by much more sinister intent, and the WA Police are right on top of this matter,” Mr Cook said.
“This is an alarming spike over a 24 to 48 hour *******, but we know that the police security intelligence unit, are on top of this.
Camera Icon‘I must say that in WA, we’ve not seen the severity of incidents that we’ve seen in Melbourne and Sydney, which are very very alarming,’ Mr Lieblich said. Credit: Unknown/X formerly Twitter
“They have a number of leads that they’re pursuing.”
Mr Cook said the perpetrators were sowing “division and hatred” in the community.
“They’re anti-Western *********** and quite frankly, I hope the police get them, and I hope they throw the book at them,” he said.
WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam said any anti-semitic incident was “abhorrent”.
“They are vile, and (those responsible) must feel the full force of the law,” she said.

SoftBank commits to joint venture with OpenAI
SoftBank commits to joint venture with OpenAI

SoftBank has committed to spending $3 billion per year for itself and its subsidiaries to use OpenAI’s tech, according to a joint announcement on Monday.
The two also announced a new joint venture, billed as “SB OpenAI Japan,” which will market OpenAI’s enterprise tech exclusively to major companies in Japan.
The deal will give SoftBank and its subsidiaries access to ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI’s API, custom models and agent products such as Operator, which it describes as “an agent that can go to the web to perform tasks for you,” such as planning vacations and filling out forms. It also will include access to OpenAI’s newest agent feature, once it launches: a tool called “Deep Research” which OpenAI says will be able to conduct multi-step analysis on the web. SoftBank branded all the OpenAI products it will use as a suite of tools “Cristal Intelligence.”
Arm, the British chip designer acquired by SoftBank in 2016, will also use OpenAI tools to “boost productivity across the company,” according to the announcement.
At a livestreamed event early Monday morning, which was jointly held by SoftBank, SoftBank Group, OpenAI and Arm, executives in the audience represented companies that collectively accounted for more than half of Japan’s total market capitalization, according to SoftBank.
During the presentation, Son said that he believes artificial general intelligence, or AGI — a vaguely defined benchmark referring to AI that equals or surpasses human intellect on a wide range of tasks — will be a reality in fewer than 10 years.
Son said via a translator that he believes “AGI can be achieved in large enterprise businesses first,” adding that to achieve it, “quite the huge amount of money is necessary” and that such funds are “only available in large enterprises at the moment.”
News of SoftBank and OpenAI’s strategic partnership comes days after CNBC confirmed that OpenAI is in talks to raise up to $40 billion in a funding round led by Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank at a valuation of up to $340 billion.
SoftBank would contribute between $15 billion and $25 billion, according to two people familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be named because the talks are ongoing. If the round were completed, SoftBank would surpass Microsoft as OpenAI’s top backer.
Part of the funding may be used for OpenAI’s commitment to Stargate, a joint venture between SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle that was introduced by President Donald Trump last week, the sources said. The plan calls for billions of dollars to be invested in U.S. AI infrastructure.
During the presentation Monday morning, Son said he was looking forward to working with OpenAI, Oracle and others on the Stargate project.
OpenAI was last valued at $157 billion by private investors. In late 2022, the company launched its ChatGPT chatbot, kicking off a ***** in generative AI. OpenAI closed its latest $6.6 billion round in October, gearing up to aggressively compete with Elon Musk’s xAI, as well as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Anthropic.
Meanwhile, ******** startup lab DeepSeek has gone viral in the U.S, presenting fresh competition to OpenAI. DeepSeek saw its app soar to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings this week and roiled U.S. markets on reports that its powerful model was trained at a fraction of the cost of U.S. competitors.
At an event in Washington, D.C. on Thursday hosted by OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman said DeepSeek is “clearly a great model.”
“This is a reminder of the level of competition and the need for democratic Al to win,” he said. He said it also points to the “level of interest in reasoning, the level of interest in open source.”

Despite Australia’s strict social media ban for minors, a YouTube exemption poses risks
Despite Australia’s strict social media ban for minors, a YouTube exemption poses risks
By Byron Kaye
SYDNEY (Reuters) – Australia’s government carved out an exemption for YouTube when it passed laws banning social media access for children under 16, but some mental health and extremism experts say the video-sharing website exposes them to addictive and harmful content.
Australia will block video-sharing platforms TikTok and Snapchat, Meta-owned Instagram and Facebook and Elon Musk’s X for minors by the end of 2025, forcing them to impose strict age restrictions on access or face hefty fines. At the same time, the government will keep Alphabet-owned YouTube open for all ages because it is a valuable educational tool and not “a core social media application”.
The initial ban was meant to include YouTube but after hearing from company executives and children’s content creators who use the site, the government granted an exemption.
“While YouTube undoubtedly functions as a source of entertainment and leisure, it is an important source of education and informational content, relied on by children, parents and carers, and educational institutions,” Communications Minister Michelle Rowland’s spokesperson said, adding that the exemption “matched broad sentiment in the *********** community that YouTube is not a core social media application”. The landmark legislation passed in November sets some of the world’s most stringent social media limits. However, six extremism and mental health researchers interviewed by Reuters say the exemption undermines Australia’s main goal of protecting young users from harmful content.
Surveys show YouTube is the country’s most popular social media website among teenagers, used by 9 in 10 Australians aged 12-17.
FAR-RIGHT MATERIAL
The academics interviewed by Reuters said that it hosts the same sort of dangerous content as the prohibited sites.
“YouTube is deeply problematic, not just because of its role in terms of extremism and the spreading of extremist content and violent content and pornographic content, but also because it delivers highly addictive video content to young people,” said Lise Waldek, a lecturer at Macquarie University’s Department of Security Studies and Criminology who has run two government-commissioned studies on extremist content on YouTube.
Helen Young, a member of the Addressing Violent Extremism and Radicalisation to Terrorism Network, echoed those concerns, saying YouTube’s “algorithm feeds really far-right material, whether it’s primarily racist or primarily sort of misogynist, anti-feminist stuff, to users that it identifies as young men and boys.”
Story Continues
The academics interviewed by Reuters acknowledged that all social media platforms struggle to control the flow of harmful content but questioned why the country’s most popular site was given an exception.
When asked about these criticisms, a YouTube spokesperson said the platform promoted content that met quality principles such as encouraging respect while limiting “repeated recommendations of content that, while innocuous in a single view, can be potentially problematic if viewed in repetition for some young viewers”.
In addition, YouTube has said in public online statements that its moderation is getting more aggressive and that it has broadened its definition of harmful content which will be picked up by its automated detection system. TESTING YOUTUBE’S ALGORITHM
To test what content YouTube’s algorithm would deliver to minors, Reuters set up three accounts using fictitious names of children under 16 years of age. Two searches, one on sex and the other on COVID-19, led to links promoting misogyny and extreme conspiracy theories within 20 clicks. A third search on “European History” led to racist content after 12 hours of intermittent scrolling on the platform.
Searches deliberately seeking out misogynist and racist commentators all landed on harmful content in less than 20 clicks. Reuters shared its methodology and results with YouTube, which said it would review the material.
Reuters also flagged six videos to YouTube that came up during the experiment. YouTube has since taken one down – an interview with an *********** neo-Nazi leader – for violating the site’s hate speech rules. An account promoting misogynistic content was removed. Four of the videos remain online.
YouTube said it has “strict policies prohibiting hate speech, harassment, and violent or graphic content” and that after a review of the flagged videos, it found two of them violated these policies. It did not comment on the ones left online.

Oil prices could fall after Trump tariffs spark initial energy price spike
Oil prices could fall after Trump tariffs spark initial energy price spike

Oil prices are likely to fall in the longer run after the initial jump following President Donald Trump’s implementation of hefty tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, said industry watchers.
Over the weekend, Trump followed through on his long-threatened 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10% duty on goods from China. Energy resources from Canada will be subject to a lower 10% tariff.
The U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose 1.75% to $73.8 per barrel, while U.S. gasoline futures also climbed. RBOB Gasoline futures were last up 2.81% at $2.11 per gallon. International Brent crude climbed 0.71% to $76.21 per barrel.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, America’s imports of ********* crude oil reached a record 4.3 million barrels per day in July 2024, following the expansion of Canada’s Trans Mountain pipeline. Canada made up about 62% of all U.S. crude oil imports in the first 10 months of last year, while Mexico accounted for about 7% in the same *******.
While crude markets will see higher prices and consumers will be forking out more for gasoline and diesel costs in the near term, the spike is only temporary, oil watchers told CNBC.
“While the initial move on crude oil is upward, a cycle of tariffs and retaliatory actions by Canada, Mexico, China and perhaps others in the future could lead to a worldwide recession, causing oil prices to plummet,” Andy Lipow, President of Lipow Oil Associates told CNBC.
The tariffs have not resulted in any oil supplies being taken off the market, and will result in a redistribution of supplies as Mexico and Canada look to divert their volumes to Europe and Asia, Lipow added. Meanwhile, U.S. refiners will be looking to process more domestic crude oil while seeking Middle East alternatives.
Canada to bear the brunt
Both Canada and Mexico have limited spare refining capacity or alternative export routes, and the tariffs will likely push oil producers in both countries into steep price discounts, said Saul Kavonic, head of energy research at MST Marquee.
********* oil producers will eventually bear the brunt of the tariffs’ burden with a $3 to $4 per barrel discount on ********* crude given the limited alternative export markets, Goldman Sachs wrote in a note dated Sunday.
In the medium term, Goldman’s analysts also expect that broad tariffs will impact global GDP as well as oil demand, weighing down oil prices.
Additionally, global oil prices could drop further after the next quarter as tariffs worsen the demand picture and OPEC+ faces increasing pressure from Trump to reverse production cuts, said Kavonic. Trump recently stated that he is urging Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices.
The oil cartel, which is slated to meet on Monday, has yet to respond to Trump’s request. OPEC+ has been withholding 2.2 million barrels per day from the global market to stem falling prices. In December, the group decided to extend its production cuts through at least March 2025 before phasing them out gradually over the course of a year.
