New MediaTek Chromebook benchmark surfaces with impressive speed New MediaTek Chromebook benchmark surfaces with impressive speed Many SoCs are being prepared for upcoming 2025 devices, and a recent benchmark suggests that a MediaTek chipset could make Chromebooks as fast as they have ever been this year. Referencing the GeekBench benchmark, ChromeUnboxed discovered the latest scores of the MediaTek MT8196 chip, which has been reported on for some time now. With the chip being housed on the motherboard codenamed ‘Navi,’ the benchmark shows the chip excelling in single-core and multi-core benchmarks, as well as in GPU, NPU, and some other tests run. GeekBench/ChromUnboxed The publication notes that MediaTek MT8196 is an ARM-based SoC, that is likely a Dimensity 9400 chip reconfigured to work on Chromebooks. Typically, the chip is a flagship SoC run on smartphones and tablets, and it’s known for its speed. Its biggest competition are chips from the Qualcomm Snapdragon line. In terms of other Chromebooks, the MediaTek MT8196 ‘Navi’ device has beat out all of the current fastest Chromebooks, all which run the Intel Core Ultra 7. ChromeUnboxed noted the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, codenamed ‘Karis’ as an example. The publication added that one hinderance to the MediaTek MT8196 chip providing the fastest Chromebooks of 2025 could be if devices featuring Intel’s Panther Lake release first. There have been no benchmarks of the SoC yet, so there is no way to know how its power will fare in the industry. Evenso, Google is likely to begin introducing new Chromebooks in the spring. It will be interesting to confirm models and specs at that time. If the company keeps a launch cycle similar to what it did last year, it may host a Chromebook launch in the fall as well. There is also word of a device codenamed ‘Hylia,’ that ChromeUnboxed has been tracking that may table a tablet form factor. However, the publication cannot confirm whether the Chromebook might run the MediaTek MT8196 chip. Chrome incognito just got even more private with this change Chrome incognito just got even more private with this change Google Chrome’s Incognito mode and InPrivate just became even more private, as they no longer save copied text and media to the clipboard, according to Windows Latest. The changes apply to Windows 11 and 10 users and were rolled out in 2024. However, neither Microsoft nor Google documented it. Even though this change is not a recent feature, it’s odd that neither tech giant thought it was worth mentioning. Previously, the default setting was that when a user saved text or images to the clipboard history, it was synced with Cloud Clipboard on Windows. Moreover, accessing this synced content was as simple as pressing the Windows and V keys, which poses a security risk, especially when using incognito mode. This change truly makes Chrome Incognito more private since whatever happens in Chrome Incognito should stay there, just as it should. On March 25, 2024, Microsoft presented a code update that prevents copied content from being saved to the clipboard history or synced to the cloud when a user is in Incognito Mode. Furthermore, the software giant also recognized that Windows has unique clipboard formats to leave out sensitive data from syncing, but platforms such as Android do not function in the same way. The Windows clipboard formats that prevent copied content from being saved in history are: ExcludeClipboardContentFromMonitorProcessing → Stops saving to history & cloud CanIncludeInClipboardHistory=0 → Stops saving in history CanUploadToCloudClipboard=0 → Stops cloud sync The changes to Chrome Incognito also apply to macOS and iOS, though the implementation differs slightly. The system clears the clipboard after copying on macOS to stop sync on iPhones and Macs. Interestingly, Google has not officially said anything about this, but could this change result from the class-action lawsuit that cost the company $5 billion? Musk DOGE staffer resigns over racist social media posts Musk DOGE staffer resigns over racist social media posts Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, speaks with CNBC on May 16th, 2023. David A. Grogan | CNBC A staff member on the Department of Government Efficiency led by tech billionaire Elon Musk resigned Thursday after the Wall Street Journal asked the White House about his connection to a social media account that advocated for racism and eugenics, the newspaper reported. The DOGE staffer, Marko Elez, earlier Thursday had been approved by a federal judge along with another DOGE staff member to have access to the payment system at the U.S. Treasury, but restricted his ability to share data from the system. The Journal said it established links between the 25-year-old Elez and a social media account that was deleted in December. “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity,” the account wrote on X in September, the Journal reported. “Normalize Indian hate,” the account wrote the same month, in reference to a post noting the prevalence of people from India in Silicon Valley,” according to the Journal. X is owned by Musk, who is playing a major role in efforts by President Donald Trump to slash federal government spending and employee headcount. “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” the account posted in July, according to the newspaper. In June, the account tweeted, “I would not mind at all if Gaza and Israel were both wiped off the face of the Earth.” Read more CNBC politics coverage The Journal reported that Elez has worked for Musk at X, SpaceX and Starlink. “The deleted @nullllptr account previously went by the username @marko_elez, a review of archived posts shows,” the Journal reported. “The user behind the @nullllptr also described themselves as an employee at SpaceX and Starlink, where Elez has worked, according to archives of Elez’s personal website.” White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told the Journal that Elez resigned after the Journal inquired about the account. CNBC has requested comment from the White House. In an interview with the Bloomberg news service published Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he had personally vetted one of the two Treasury employees from Musk’s DOGE team. “These are highly trained professionals,” Bessent told Bloomberg. “This is not some roving band running around doing things. This is methodical and it is going to yield big savings.” — CNBC’s Kevin Breuninger contributed to this article. Santorini rocked by more earthquakes as uncertainty grows Santorini rocked by more earthquakes as uncertainty grows Several more earthquakes have struck waters around the Greek island of Santorini just hours after authorities there declared a state of emergency. The tourist hotspot has been rocked by days of seismic activity with thousands of earthquakes recorded since last Friday. On Thursday evening, a 4.6 magnitude quake was recorded at 20:16 local time (18:00 GMT) in the sea between Santorini and another island, Amorgos, followed by a 4.2 magnitude quake roughly two hours later. A majority of residents – more than 11,000 people – have already left the island as quakes are being recorded at a minute-by-minute interval. Experts have warned it is unclear when this ******* of “seismic crisis” might end. Thursday’s quakes so far have not been as severe as the 5.2 magnitude shock which occurred on Wednesday in waters between the two Greek islands. So far no major damage has been reported on the island, but authorities are preparing in case a larger quake hits. Magnitude refers to the size of an earthquake, with increases marked as decimal points. A magnitude 6.0 and above is considered severe, where as a magnitude 5.2, the strongest experienced so far in the region, is considered moderate. The royal couple will travel to Italy in April and meet Pope Francis and Italian leaders, as well as carry out engagements in Rome and the ancient city of Ravenna, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. It is expected to coincide with the King and Queen’s 20th wedding anniversary on 9 April. Tucci – who presented Searching For Italy, a BBC programme celebrating Italian food and culture – will make a speech at an event at the royals’ Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire. The Palace’s confirmation of the state visit to Italy suggests the King is well enough for an overseas journey, as he continues with his ******* treatment. Tucci – an American of Italian descent starred in the Oscar-nominated ******** thriller Conclave and has spoken about his experiences of throat *******, which he said adversely affected his sense of taste. Chef Francesco Mazzei will use local ingredients to cook an Italian menu, with the dishes reflecting the “slow food” style of cooking, which advocates fresh, regional dishes cooked in traditional ways. Mixologist Alessandro Palazzi will be on hand to make drinks using Italian flavours and herbs grown at Highgrove. The King – an enthusiast for art, culture and religion – has been a regular visitor to Italy, with this upcoming trip to be his 18th official visit. State visits are carried out on behalf of the Foreign Office and there are likely to be meetings with senior Italian government figures – an effort to build relations with an important European partner – though full details of the itinerary are still to be revealed. While there, the King and Queen may celebrate 20 years since their wedding in April 2005. The date of the ceremony had to be changed because of the death of Pope John Paul II, with the then Prince Charles travelling to Rome to attend the ********. The visit to meet Pope Francis also coincides with 2025 being a special “jubilee” year for the Catholic church, held every 25 years. New York and other states plan to sue Trump administration over DOGE access to federal systems New York and other states plan to sue Trump administration over DOGE access to federal systems New York Attorney General Letitia James plans to file a lawsuit with 10 other state attorneys general against the Trump administration over the Department of Government Efficiency program, accusing DOGE of engaging in unauthorized access to sensitive information that includes Americans’ data on federal computer systems at the Treasury Department. Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island and Vermont are expected to join the suit, as DOGE continues its sweep through the federal government, demanding access and information, some of it sensitive. “In the past week, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has given Elon Musk access to Americans’ personal private information, state bank account data, and other information that is some of our country’s most sensitive data,” James said in a statement. “As the richest man in the world, Elon Musk is not used to being told ‘no,’ but in our country, no one is above the law. The president does not have the power to give away our private information to anyone he chooses, and he cannot cut federal payments approved by Congress,” James said. “This level of access for unauthorized individuals is unlawful, unprecedented, and unacceptable. DOGE has no authority to access this information, which they explicitly sought in order to block critical payments that millions of Americans rely on – payments that support health care, childcare, and other essential programs.” However, the Treasury Department has said that DOGE only has “read only” access to its systems and cannot affect expenditures, according to a letter a department official sent to Congress Wednesday. DOGE, a Trump administration task force assigned to find ways to reduce federal spending, now has access to a Treasury unit called the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which disburses trillions in payments each year, including Social Security checks and federal salaries, according to the Associated Press. A Met Office spokesman told Yahoo News: “While January global temperature records were broken according to Copernicus, it was a cooler than average month for the *** according to provisional Met Office figures. “The figures from Copernicus obviously take into account the global temperatures, so it’s not surprising that some parts of the world will still see below average temperatures, even as global temperatures break records.” How will climate change affect the ***? The figure for January was cooler than average, but it’s important to remember that this temperature is an average compared to the ******* covering 1991-2020. It doesn’t mean the *** is cooler than before. “It’s interesting to note that while the ***’s January was cooler than average compared to the most recent 30-year meteorological averaging *******, it would have been considered as average when compared to the 1961-1990 averaging *******,” the Met Office said. “That shift in the long-term average is consistent with global patterns as a result of human-induced climate change.” What does this mean? In the ***, winters are projected to generally become warmer and wetter on average, while summers will likely become hotter and drier. Extreme weather events will likely occur more frequently due to climate change. (Reuters) By 2050, heatwaves are expected to happen every other year. And by 2070, the Met Office predicts that: Winters will be between 1-4.5C warmer and up to 30% wetter Summers will be between 1-6C warmer and up to 60% drier In addition, sea levels around the *** will continue to rise, meaning low-lying areas and coastal urban areas will be more prone to flooding. Extreme weather events will likely occur more frequently, meaning greater damage to buildings and infrastructure from flooding, storms and heat. Scientists at Berkeley Earth and the *** Met Office have said they expect 2025 to be the third-warmest year on record – cooler than 2024 and 2023 because of the shift towards La Nina, though uncertainties remain about how the phenomenon will develop. Why were scientists surprised by January’s temperatures? The record highs come despite the emergence in the Pacific of the La Nina pattern, which generally cools global temperatures. Sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions averaged 20.78C, making it the second hottest January after last year’s record. Temperatures were below average in the central Pacific but close to or above average in the eastern Pacific – suggesting a slowing or stalling of the move to La Nina conditions, while sea surface temperatures were unusually high in many other oceans and seas. The average temperature over land in Europe was 1.8C, which is some 2.51C above the 1991-2020 average for January, making it the second warmest January for the continent after 2020. Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts which runs C3S, said: “January 2025 is another surprising month, continuing the record temperatures observed throughout the last two years, despite the development of La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific and their temporary cooling effect on global temperatures. And even if La Nina does fully emerge, Burgess said its cooling effect may not be enough to temporarily curb global temperatures – which are also affected by factors like the extreme heat seen in other ocean basins, and the main driver of climate change: emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Pinterest shares surge after company beats on fourth quarter revenue Pinterest shares surge after company beats on fourth quarter revenue Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images Pinterest shares surged as much as 20% after the social media company reported fourth-quarter earnings Thursday that beat on revenue. Here’s how the company performed, according to LSEG: Revenue: $1.15 billion vs. $1.14 billion expectedFourth-quarter EBIDTA, adjusted: $470.9 million vs. $444.8 million. Pinterest said its fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share was $0.56. That figure is not comparable to analyst estimates because the company recorded a deferred tax benefit of $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter. Revenue for Pinterest’s fourth quarter jumped 18% year over year while net income was $1.85 billion, which included the deferred tax benefit. The company’s fourth-quarter adjusted EBIDTA margin was 41%, which was higher the 39% that Wall Street was projecting. Pinterest said it expects first-quarter sales to come in between $837 million to $852 million. The midpoint of that range, $844.5 million, topped analysts’ expectations of $833 million. The company said global monthly active users grew 11% year over year to 553 million in the fourth quarter. That was ahead of Wall Street estimates of 547.4 million. Pinterest’s fourth-quarter global average revenue per user came in at $2.12, higher than analysts’ expectations of $2.09. Pinterest’s latest global monthly active user numbers represent nearly 3% growth from 537 million in brought in during the third quarter. “Our strategy is paying off,” Pinterest CEO Bill Ready said in a statement. “People are coming to Pinterest more often, the platform has never been more actionable, and our lower funnel focus is driving results for users and advertisers.” Pinterest’s report comes after other social media companies saw their stock prices rise following strong results for the quarter that ended in December. Snap shares jumped in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the social media company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. Last week, Meta reported fourth-quarter results that beat on the top and bottom. Reddit will report its fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday. Watch: Meta is too high of a risk for value. Investors should take a ‘countertrend’ stocks right now, Katie Stockton says Investors should take a ‘countertrend’ stocks right now, Katie Stockton says The major market averages could struggle in the short term as the momentum trade fades, and tactical traders may want to look elsewhere for winners, according to Fairlead Strategist founder Katie Stockton. Appearing Thursday on CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ,” Stockton said her team was looking at “countertrend exposure” because of an expected short-term decline for the market as a whole. “We think that the odds are best in stocks that honestly look a little bit different than the S & P 500,” Stockton said. The S & P 500, and other market-cap weighted indexes, have become increasingly concentrated in just a handful of tech stocks in recent years. The so-called Magnificent Seven stocks accounted for more than 32% of the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) as of Wednesday’s market close. Instead of buying more tech, the smarter move could be to look to more under-the-radar sectors for stocks with interesting profiles. “What we’re kind of interested in from a technical perspective are stocks that actually have been in downcycles and seem to be emerging from them. That would be more common right now in defensive sectors like health care, consumer staples also, even some REITs are starting to perk up after downdrafts,” Stockton said. REIT is an abbreviation of real estate investment trust, a sector favored by some income investors for its cash payouts. One name that Stockton highlighted in the health-care sector was Regeneron Pharmaceuticals . Stockton said the stock recently broke above its 50-day moving average, a move that some technical analysts believe can signal an upcoming breakout. REGN 3M mountain Regeneron’s start is on an upswing in February. On a more long-term basis, Stockton pointed to Lululemon as a stock she is interested in, but cautioned it may be smart to wait for a pullback instead of jumping in at this price. PGA Tour ‘closer to LIV Golf deal’ after President Donald Trump intervention PGA Tour ‘closer to LIV Golf deal’ after President Donald Trump intervention The PGA Tour says it is “closer to a deal” with rival series LIV Golf after calling on American President Donald Trump to get involved. Trump met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and player director Adam Scott this week as the organisation seeks help with talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which funds LIV. The PGA Tour has been in protracted negotiations with PIF in an attempt to heal the split in world golf. “We asked the President to get involved for the good of the game, the good of the country, and for all the countries involved,” said the statement which came from Monahan, Scott and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods, who is also a player director. “We are grateful that his leadership has brought us closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men’s professional golf.” LIV Golf started in 2022 and, lured by huge signing on fees and prize funds, several top players moved from the PGA Tour circuit, including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia. In June 2023 the PGA Tour and the European-based DP World Tour announced they had a ‘framework agreement’ for a merger with PIF but a deadline to complete that deal passed at the end of that year. On Wednesday it was announced this year’s US Open will become the first major to provide players on the LIV Golf tour with an exemption for the tournament based on rankings. Trump’s love of golf is well-known and he owns championship courses around the world. US lawmakers want DeepSeek banned from government devices

US lawmakers want DeepSeek banned from government devices US lawmakers want DeepSeek banned from government devices Two US Congress members plan to introduce bipartisan legislation to ban China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot from government devices. The bill’s announcement came after a security expert said DeepSeek not only poses a threat to US AI stocks; it’s also a national security risk. The chatbot has recently been the most downloaded app in the US. U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Darin LaHood (R-IL), each party’s senior-most member on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, plan to introduce the “No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act.” If all of this sounds familiar, the move echoes Congress’ blocking of TikTok from government devices in 2022. That was the opening salvo in a saga that culminated in the US-wide ban the app is now staring down. The alarm follows an independent analysis from Feroot Security claiming that DeepSeek’s code sends user data directly to the ******** government-owned China Mobile. “We see direct links to servers and companies in China that are under control of the ******** government,” Feroot analyst Ivan Tsarynny said in an interview with ABC News. “This is something we’ve never seen before.” “Our personal information is being sent to China, there is no denial, and the DeepSeek tool is collecting everything that American users connect to it,” Tsarynny told the Wall Street Journal. ABC reported on Wednesday that multiple cybersecurity experts verified Feroot’s findings. The US Navy and NASA have already banned DeepSeek from their employees’ devices. Texas is the only state to have blocked the app from government devices. Three other countries have already beat the US to the punch in banning the app: Italy, South Korea and Australia. LaHood warned of the app’s dangers. “The national security threat that DeepSeek — a CCP-affiliated company — poses to the United States is alarming,” the Representative wrote in a press release. “DeepSeek’s generative AI program acquires the data of US users and stores the information for unidentified use by the CCP. Under no circumstances can we allow a CCP company to obtain sensitive government or personal data.” “We must get to the bottom of DeepSeek’s malign activities,” Gottheimer wrote. “We simply can’t risk the CCP infiltrating the devices of our government officials and jeopardizing our national security.” Source link #lawmakers #DeepSeek #banned #government #devices Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
