Eight in 10 teen ********* victims killed with a blade, ONS says
Eight in 10 teen ********* victims killed with a blade, ONS says
Teenage ********* victims in England and Wales are far more likely to have been stabbed to death than any other age group, new statistics suggest.
In 2023-24, 53 of 64 ********* victims aged between 13 and 19 – or 83% – were killed with a sharp instrument, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Thursday.
That is significantly higher than the proportion of knife homicides for all age groups, which was 46% for the same *******.
This year there have already been a number of fatal stabbings of teenagers, such as the killing of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose at his school in Sheffield on Monday.
The ONS data covers the 12 months to March 2024, and does not include knife homicides that have occurred since.
The latest figures continue an upward trend in the percentage of teenage homicides reported to involve a bladed article, compared to 56% in 2013-14.
A total of 262 knife homicides were recorded in 2023-24 for all age groups, of whom 40 were aged under 18, the ONS figures show.
The ONS data also revealed:
Homicides involving a bladed article reached a decade high in 2023-24Male victims were more likely to be stabbed to death than females, at 50% compared to 35% respectivelyIn the 262 recorded knife homicides, the type of weapon used were: a kitchen knife (42%), an unidentified sharp instrument (17%), a machete (7%), and a combat or military-style knife (5%)
The government said last year it would halve knife crime in a decade.
In September 2024, zombie-style knives were banned in England and Wales, making it an imprisonable offence to own, make, transport or sell them.
However, a BBC investigation a few months later found zombie knives and machetes were still available to buy online in the ***.
Actor Idris Elba – who has made a documentary on the solutions to knife crime for the BBC – said last week that while banning the ***** of blades such as zombie-style knives is a positive step, early intervention is also necessary.
He told the BBC that domestic knives could also be made less dangerous.
“Not all kitchen knives need to have a point on them, that sounds like a crazy thing to say,” he said, adding, “but you can still cut your food without the point on your knife, which is an innovative way to look at it.”
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told the Times on Tuesday that she was considering a ban on kitchen knives with a pointed end as part of the government’s crackdown.
The government has also vowed to bring in tougher measures aimed at preventing knives being sold online to under-18s.
********* is defined in law as the killing of another person, whereas ******* specifically refers to unlawful killing with intent.

Cameron Smith makes promising start to LIV Golf season
Cameron Smith makes promising start to LIV Golf season
Cameron Smith has blown out the cobwebs in his first start of the year to be tied for ninth after the opening round of lit-up LIV Golf Riyadh.
Australia’s former world No.2 and British Open champion rebounded from an early bogey to reel off six birdies in his last 12 holes for a five-under-par 67 at Riyadh Golf Club.
With three runner-up finishes and a third in his past four starts, including a tie for second at the Saudi International in early December, Smith is once again threatening to snap a 17-month winless run.
But he must hunt down Poland’s 2022 *********** Open winner Adrian Meronk, who set a cracking first-round pace on Thursday with a bogey-free 10-under 62.
Chasing his maiden LIV title after joining the breakaway tour last year, Meronk enjoys a two-stroke edge over Colombia’s Sebastian Munoz.
After starting his round at the fifth hole, Meronk was eight under when he reached the 627-yard par-5 third.
Despite missing the fairway on his first two shots, he nailed his approach to 12 foot and converted his ninth birdie of the day before finishing with a 10th with a long-range putt on his last hole, the par-4 fourth.
Mixing nine birdies with a lone bogey, Munoz said he loved playing under the lights with the tournament being played late in the day local time to fit broadcast windows for LIV’s new US TV partner, Fox Sports.
“I enjoyed it a lot, the experience. I felt like it was the first time we do it, and the visual and the golf ball, I really like it. It’s something different, something that we’re not used to it, and it’s nice,” Munoz said
The team lead belongs to Spanish star Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII thanks to new member Tom McKibbin, who shot a seven-under 65 on his LIV debut.
The Northern Irishman is tied for third with Englishman Lee Westwood.
“I’ve watched this for the last couple years since it started and it’s something that I’ve really liked to watch, something very different, something that probably appeals to more people my age,” McKibbin said.
“The opportunity to get to play with these guys here and learn from some of the best players in the world week in, week out is something that appealed very, very nicely to me.”
England’s Tyrrell Hatton and American Caleb Surratt, also part of Legion XIII, are among a tie for fifth at six under.
Rahm had the highest round of his team, a five-under 67, giving Legion a seven-shot lead through one round at 24 under par.
Smith’s 2024 championship-winning team, Ripper GC, are tied for eighth.
Marc Leishman matched his skipper’s 67 while Lucas Herbert carded a 68 to be equal 15th, but Matt Jones’s 74 left his team at 12 under and a dozen shots behind Legion XIII.
Smith will be back in Australia next week for the third edition of LIV Golf Adelaide.

Judge rules Georgia railroad can seize land as landowners vow to fight
Judge rules Georgia railroad can seize land as landowners vow to fight
ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has ruled that a Georgia railroad can buy land against the will of property owners to build a track, rebuffing a challenge that a libertarian group hoped could make it harder to use eminent domain to take property.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Craig Schwall Sr. ruled Tuesday that the Sandersville Railroad could condemn a 200-foot (60-meter) wide strip of property running 4.5 miles (7.3 kilometers) to build a rail line serving a rock quarry and other users. Landowners fighting the railroad had appealed a Georgia Public Service Commission ruling allowing the land taking.
Schwall kept a freeze on construction for now, with landowners saying they would appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
The case matters because private entities need to condemn private land for railroads and facilities including pipelines and electric transmission lines.
The Sandersville Railroad, owned by an influential Georgia family, wants to connect the quarry to the CSX railroad at Sparta, allowing products to be shipped widely. Sparta is a mostly ****** rural town about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta in one of Georgia’s poorest counties.
Sandersville has agreements to buy some of the 18 parcels it needs. But other owners say losing a strip of property would spoil land they treasure, and that some families have owned for a century.
“Every day that Sandersville isn’t coming onto our land and starting to build is a good day,” Diane Smith, one of the owners, said in a statement. “But we won’t rest easy until we know for sure that they’ll never be able to take our land from us.”
Brian Brodrick, a lawyer for the railroad, urged opposed property owners in a Thursday statement “to return to the negotiating table so we can bring new opportunities and channels of trade to all the citizens of Hancock County and the region.” He said the spur would have “minimal impacts” on neighbors.
Some people in the rural neighborhood think the railroad would enable expansion at a quarry owned by Heidelberg Materials, a publicly traded ******* firm. They dislike the quarry because it generates noise, dust and truck traffic.
Supporters say if the railroad is built, the quarry will move its operation farther from houses, trains will reduce trucks on roads and the railroad will build berms to shield residents.
Railroads have long had the power of eminent domain, but Georgia law says such land seizures must be for “public use.” Opponents targeted the project by saying it would only benefit the quarry. The Sandersville Railroad says there are other users, including a company located at the quarry that blends gravel and asphalt for paving. Several companies have said they would truck products to load them onto the new line, saying they want access to markets served by CSX.
Schwall found the railroad met the public use standard, saying it was necessary for the “functioning” of Sandersville and “also serves a public purpose because it will provide a channel of trade in east middle Georgia.”
The group representing opponents, the Institute for Justice, hoped to use the case to chip away at eminent domain, the power to legally take private land while paying fair compensation.
The libertarian-leaning legal group lost a landmark 2005 case allowing the city of New London, Connecticut, to take land from one private owner and transfer it to another private owner for economic development. Schwall cited that case in his ruling.
“We remain committed to proving to the courts that a private railroad’s desire to build a speculative new line entirely for the benefit of a handful of private companies is not a public use under the U.S. and Georgia constitutions and Georgia’s eminent domain laws,” Institute for Justice attorney Bill Maurer said in statement.

Worries over changes to 20mph limit slow reversal
Worries over changes to 20mph limit slow reversal
BBC
The Welsh government switched the default speed limit in September 2023, but the policy is now under review.
Worries about potential fatalities means there will be a “cautious approach” to reversing the 20mph speed limit on dozens of roads one Welsh county despite overwhelming local support.
A public consultation in Wrexham county, which concluded at the end of January, revealed most people wanted to see the 52 roads under consideration to revert back to 30mph.
Councils across Wales are reviewing their 20mph roads after almost half a million people petitioned the Welsh government calling for it to be scrapped.
The Welsh government said the main aim of the policy was to save lives and reduce casualties.
Dave Bithell, Wrexham council’s strategic member for transport, said there were “safety concerns” over changes to the roads.
Although he has delegated powers to make the changes, he said the matter would now go before the executive board for a collective decision.
The council has never been in this position, he added.
“Whenever we have considered road speeds, it has always been to reduce them,” he said.
“We have never increased speeds as a council.”
Bithell said increasing speed upped the risk of harm if there was an accident, “so we need to get this right”.
“I don’t want it on my conscience – and I don’t think the executive board want it on theirs either – if there is a fatality after the changes are made.”
Councillor Dave Bithell says the changes will be carefully considered
The Welsh government switched the default speed limit on mostly urban roads on 17 September 2023, and with some exemptions most 30mph roads became 20.
Data for the first year of the policy revealed there had been about 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured on 20 and 30mph roads.
The figures showed the number of people hurt fell by 28% compared with the same ******* the year before, with 10 fewer fatalities.
But the scheme, introduced while Mark Drakeford was first minister, has been one of the Welsh government’s most controversial initiatives since devolution began.
The policy is now under review, and local authorities are considering whether more roads can be switched back to 30mph.
20mph policy ‘a mess’
The leader of Wrexham council, councillor Mark Prichard, said the introduction of the 20mph policy had been “a mess” from the start.
“The Welsh government were told and no-one listened,” he said.
“What I would say to any government, not just the Welsh government, is learn from this and don’t do it again. The numbers on the petitions, the money that has been spent.
“It’s millions upon millions at a time when local authorities are struggling for money.”
Ken Skates, the cabinet secretary for transport and north Wales, said the main objective of the policy had been to save lives and reduce casualties.
“Building on the broad consensus that 20mph is right where people live, work and play, we want to ensure we have the right speeds on the right roads,” he said.
“With Welsh government support, highway authorities have now started the formal process of reviewing their 20mph roads based on the revised guidance and the feedback they received.”
Mr Skates said a number of local authorities have completed this process with more to follow in the coming weeks and months.
Wrexham council is aiming for a target date of May to complete to complete the roll-back.
While Bithell said the local authority hoped to work with road safety organisation Go Safe and North Wales Police on a campaign making people aware of the changes.

Nazi flag allegedly waved at pub after new laws pass
Nazi flag allegedly waved at pub after new laws pass
Two men face jail time over a swastika flag allegedly waved in a pub a stone’s throw from a Jewish museum.
The pair, aged 44 and 51, are due to face court on Friday after police were called to the hotel in Darlinghurst in inner Sydney on Thursday afternoon.
The men were arrested nearby with the flag and several electronic devices seized.
The incident came hours after federal parliament passed tough hate crime laws that carry a mandatory one-year jail term for the display of Nazi or terrorist symbols.
The suite of changes, passed with rare Labor support for controversial mandatory minimums, are an attempt to curb rising anti-Semitism in recent months.
NSW also announced tougher penalties and new crimes on Thursday after escalating anti-Semitic graffiti, firebombings and most recently a thwarted plot targeting key Jewish sites.
Jewish groups have aired concerns several offenders are getting away with little more than a conviction and a small fine for crimes striking fear into the community.
“We have been saying for weeks now that the Jewish community is the target of an ongoing campaign of domestic terrorism designed to tear at our social fabric,” NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Ossip said.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the changes built on his government’s earlier work to outlaw Nazi symbolism.
“We want people who are engaged in anti-Semitic activities to be caught, to be charged and to be put in the clink – that’s my priority,” he said.
The two men arrested on Thursday have been charged with an existing NSW law banning the public display of Nazi symbol without reasonable excuse.
They were bail refused ahead of a court appearance on Friday morning.
If convicted, they face a maximum of one year in prison and an $11,000 fine.

‘Impactful’ weekend storm could bring heavy snow to Massachusetts
‘Impactful’ weekend storm could bring heavy snow to Massachusetts
Keep those snow shovels handy! After light snow fell across Massachusetts on Thursday before transitioning to a wintry mix, the weekend is expected to bring a “more impactful” storm to the region.
Our next winter storm looks like it will move in on Saturday night, with the most snow accumulation happening between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the Boston 25 Weather team’s latest blog post.
Meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz said on Thursday we’ll be on a winter storm watch starting Saturday night. In a post on X, the Chief wrote, “Storm likely hits from midnight to noon Sunday.”
In his Thursday forecast, Meteorologist Tucker Antico said the potential for at least a half foot of snow “is very realistic” across southern New England.
“There’s likely above a 50 percent chance of seeing at least 4 inches of snowfall, if not closer to 6, 8, and 10 is possible in some spots,” Antico said.
It remains too early to issue a projected snowfall map, according to Antico.
Antico added, “Exactly where the heaviest snow lines up is still up in the air…A lot of the data I’ve seen suggests it’ll be in really most of Massachusetts, but there’s also a southern trend beginning right now. So, before we put numbers on the board, we want to get more confident in if that trend continues.”
This snowstorm should wrap up by late Sunday morning or noon with no impact on Sunday night Super Bowl plans.
There is also a “good chance” we see more snow “on at least one, if not two days next week,” according to Antico.
“Beyond Sunday, we’re in a really active weather pattern right now,” Antico said. “The potential for another legitimate storm is there.”
Antico added, “Stick with us as we keep an eye on real winter, which has seemingly arrived in February.”

The company expects revenue this quarter of between $755 million and $785 million, or $770 million in the middle of the range, versus the average estimate of $772 million, according to LSEG.

Marcus Rashford doesn’t see football like I do, says Ruben Amorim
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says Marcus Rashford left the club because he couldn’t get the attacker to see eye-to-eye with him.
On Sunday, Rashford, 27, joined Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season having not featured for United since expressing his desire for a “new challenge” in December.
Villa have the option to make the deal permanent for £40m, which would bring an end to Rashford’s near-life long association with United.
“I couldn’t get Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it,” Amorim said.
“Sometimes you have one player that is really good with one coach, and the same player with another coach is different.
“I wish the best to Rashford and to [Villa manager] Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.”
Asked whether Rashford said that he did not agree with Amorim’s ideas about football, Amorim said: “You know, like me, that it’s not the way that occurs.
“It’s something that you feel as a coach and as a player. It’s quite normal. It happened with a lot of coaches.
“The important thing is that I’m here saying that was my decision, like Ty [Malacia] and Antony was my decision to do these loans, and to keep some players even without any transfers.”
When asked if there is any chance Rashford could return to Old Trafford in the summer, Amorim said he is focussed on the current season because “we are fighting for our jobs until the summer”.

Elon Musk U.S. airspace reform plan spurs conflict-of-interest fears
Elon Musk U.S. airspace reform plan spurs conflict-of-interest fears
Elon Musk walks on Capitol Hill on the day of a meeting with Senate Republican Leader-elect John Thune (R-SD), in Washington, U.S. December 5, 2024.
Benoit Tessier | Reuters
Elon Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration’s airspace reform plan has quickly spurred calls to bar the Tesla and SpaceX leader from those efforts over his alleged conflicts of interest.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday he spoke with Musk — who also leads President Donald Trump’s government-shrinking group DOGE — in the wake of a deadly plane ****** above Washington, D.C., last week.
“We’re going to remake our airspace, and we’re going to do it quickly,” Duffy said after praising Musk as a “pretty remarkable guy” with “access to the best technological people, the best engineers in the world.”
Duffy later Wednesday wrote on Musk’s social media site X that DOGE is “going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system.”
Musk replied, “With the support of President @realDonaldTrump, the @DOGE team will aim to make rapid safety upgrades to the air traffic control system.”
But Sen. Maria Cantwell, the top Democrat on the committee that oversees air traffic control, said that Musk should not be allowed anywhere near those reform efforts.
“It’s a clear conflict of interest,” Cantwell told reporters Thursday.
The senator from Washington state said Musk has been “fined for violations.” She was referencing the Federal Aviation Administration proposing $633,000 in civil penalties against SpaceX last year over the company’s alleged failures to follow licensing rules during two rocket launches in 2023.
Musk had responded to that proposed fine by threatening to sue the FAA for “regulatory overreach.” Days later, he publicly urged then-FAA chief Michael Whitaker to resign.
Cantwell said, “At a time when you need the FAA to call the shots and say, ‘Don’t launch now because there could be a conflict in the airspace,’ the last thing I want is that guy trying to control the airspace.”
Whitaker stepped down on Jan. 20, the day Trump took office, after running the agency for less than 15 months. The move left the FAA without a Senate-confirmed head for the first days of Trump’s second term, including the day when the American Airlines flight collided with an Army ****** Hawk helicopter in D.C.
Trump appointed Christopher Rocheleau as acting FAA commissioner one day after the ******, which left 67 people dead.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., sent Musk a letter last week questioning his role in Whitaker’s resignation.
In a letter shared later Thursday, Cantwell asked Duffy to “make sure that all conflicts of interest between the FAA and Elon Musk are removed.”
Cantwell wrote to Duffy that during their most recent conversation, “You did not discuss your intention to involve Elon Musk in the FAA’s safety systems or process.”
“It is a conflict of interest for someone whose company is regulated by the federal government to be involved in anything that affects his personal financial interest, his company or his competitors,” the senator wrote.
Cantwell also noted that Whitaker had been unanimously confirmed by the Senate.

Trump trade chief pick says tariffs could reverse deficits but study needed – National
Trump trade chief pick says tariffs could reverse deficits but study needed – National
Jamieson Greer, President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. trade representative, said on Thursday that a universal tariff needs further study to gauge its impact on rising U.S. trade deficits, and put countries on notice they must lower import barriers to maintain access to the U.S. market.
Greer told a U.S. Senate confirmation hearing that Trump’s campaign promise of imposing at least a 10% universal tariff would be examined under an inauguration day trade memo, which ordered a report by April 1.
He said the study would also examine the impact of a growing U.S. goods trade deficit, which on Wednesday reached a record $1.2 trillion for all of 2024 as imports surged.
“Part of the question is how large of a trade deficit do we want, because the trade deficit represents, in large part, manufacturing jobs that have (gone) overseas,” Greer told the Senate Finance Committee.
“A universal tariff is something that should be studied and considered to see if it can reverse the direction of that deficit and the offshoring” of jobs, said Greer, a Washington trade lawyer who was chief of staff to former USTR Robert Lighthizer during Trump’s first term.

China hits back at Trump with counter tariffs on select U.S. imports
Like Lighthizer, Greer wants to push for smaller trade deficits and equal treatment from U.S. trade partners.
He said it was “a huge problem,” that trade deficits were growing with certain countries, including Vietnam, that have high tariff and non-tariff trade barriers.
The U.S. goods trade deficit with Vietnam rose 18% last year to $123.5 billion, according to Census Bureau data, due in part to companies shifting production away from China to avoid Trump’s first-term tariffs.
If confirmed, Greer said he would in “short order” assess unfair trading practices of countries that maintain large trade imbalances with the U.S. “and explain to them that if they want to enjoy continued market access to the United States, we need to have better reciprocity.”
Canada, Mexico tariffs were about fentanyl
Asked about Trump’s initial tariff threats against Canada and Mexico and new 10% duties on ******** imports, Greer said the goal of these actions was reaching agreements to curb the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the U.S., and ******** migration. Trump has sometimes said his goal also was to cut trade deficits and to raise revenue.

“The action that the president is talking about is about fentanyl,” Greer said.

“We don’t want another single fentanyl death. A kilogram of fentanyl can kill 50,000 people, by some calculations. We can’t have that, and we need to come to an agreement on that.”

‘Northern crossings have skyrocketed’: Republican senators blame Canada for U.S. fentanyl crisis
Regarding the U.S. trading relationship with China, he said it needs to become balanced, and that this would require more than lowering ******** tariffs, but also reducing non-tariff barriers.

Greer said that as directed by Trump’s trade memo, he will review where China did not comply with the 2020 “Phase 1” trade deal with Beijing. The deal paused a two-year trade war and included commitments by China to boost purchases of U.S. farm goods, energy, manufactured products and services.
“From there, you move to dispute settlement and you move to enforcement,” Greer said.
In addition to the 10% tariffs imposed this week, Trump vowed during his presidential campaign that he would impose duties of 60% on ******** goods.
Greer said the 2020 U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade also needed to be re-examined to ensure China and other foreign countries of concern are not “free-riding” on it for duty-free access to the U.S. The USMCA is due for renegotiation by 2026.
Greer added that he wanted to hold Mexico and Canada to their USMCA market access agreements, including dairy for Canada and energy for Mexico.

China hits back at Trump’s tariffs
Greer also called for a more muscular approach to digital trade to push back against regulatory efforts by South Korea and the European Union against U.S. technology firms after the Biden administration last year dropped its longstanding World Trade Organization demands for free cross-border data flows and prohibition of data localization requirements.
Story continues below advertisement
“We should not be outsourcing our regulation to the European Union or Brazil or anyone else, and they can’t discriminate against us and it won’t be tolerated,” Greer said.
Asked by several senators about his plans for expanding agricultural trade, which suffered during Trump’s past trade wars, Greer said he wanted to expand foreign markets for “competitive” U.S. farmers.
“That means that we need to go and gain market access where things have been closed,” he said, citing India and Turkey as markets that need to fully open to U.S. farm goods.
In his opening remarks, Greer said he would push for a pragmatic U.S. trade policy focused on rebuilding U.S. manufacturing and shoring up supply chains.
“If the United States does not have a robust manufacturing base and innovation economy, it will have little in the way of hard power to deter conflict and protect Americans,” he said.

One of the highlights of this collection is The Gunk. Developed by the team responsible for the SteamWorld series, The Gunk is a 3D platformer that takes place on an overgrown jungle planet. You’ll be tasked with restoring nature as you eliminate the ****** gunk that’s slowly consuming the environment.
Other notable titles in the lineup include the 2D platformer Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines, the hilarious adventure game Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip, and the roguelike strategy game Tales & Tactics. If you prefer metroidvanias, don’t miss out on Afterimage and Vernal Edge. The former looks stunning with its hand-drawn graphics, while the latter boasts fast-paced action with a deep combo and spell system. There’s also the CRPG Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Enhanced Edition, which is similar to other sprawling, isometric RPGs like Baldur’s Gate–but instead of using Dungeons & Dragons as the baseline for its gameplay mechanics like Baldur’s Gate does, it uses the Pathfinder 2E tabletop system instead.
Speaking of tabletop experiences adapted to video games, several digital board games are also on offer in the Platinum Collection, including hits like Root, Everdell, and Munchkin. Root is particularly notable, as its adorable characters are brought to life with a charming cartoon art style, and its many layers of complexity remain intact for this PC adaptation.

Trump signs order sanctioning International Criminal Court
Trump signs order sanctioning International Criminal Court
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order sanctioning the International Criminal Court, after accusing it of targeting the US and Israel.
The measure places financial and visa restrictions on individuals and their families who assist in ICC investigations of American citizens or allies, the White House said before the signing.
In January, the US House of Representatives voted to sanction the ICC after it issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over war crimes allegations in Gaza, which Israel denies. The ICC also issued a warrant for a ****** commander.
At the time, the ICC said it “regrets any attempts to undermine the court’s independence, integrity and impartiality”.
The US is not a member of the ICC and has repeatedly rejected any jurisdiction by the body over American officials or citizens.
President Trump’s order signed on Thursday accuses the Hague-based ICC of creating a “shameful moral equivalency” between ****** and Israel by issuing the warrants for the Israeli leaders and a ****** commander at the same time, according to a fact sheet circulated by the White House earlier.
It also says the ICC is placing constraints on Israel’s right to self-defence, while accusing the body of ignoring Iran and anti-Israel groups.
Trump has repeatedly criticised the ICC, and took several steps to sanction the body during his first term in office.
At the time, he also imposed sanctions on ICC officials who were investigating whether US forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan.
The order allowed the US to block the assets of ICC employees and stop them from entering the US.
In response, the ICC said that the sanctions were an “unacceptable attempt to interfere with the rule of law”.
Founded in 2002 – in the wake of the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the Rwandan genocide – the ICC was formed to investigate alleged atrocities.
The court can only deal with crimes committed after July 2002, when the Rome Statute – which formed the ICC – came into effect.
Over 120 countries have ratified the statute, while another 34 have signed and may ratify in the future.
Neither the US nor Israel is party to the Rome Statute.
The ICC is a court of last resort and it is meant to intervene only when national authorities cannot or will not prosecute.
Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, also criticised the ICC’s warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, calling the move “outrageous” and saying there was no equivalence between Israel and ******.

Turns out, it’s not that hard to do what OpenAI does for less
Turns out, it’s not that hard to do what OpenAI does for less
OpenAI
Even as OpenAI continues clinging to its assertion that the only path to AGI lies through massive financial and energy expenditures, independent researchers are leveraging open-source technologies to match the performance of its most powerful models — and do so at a fraction of the price.
Last Friday, a unified team from Stanford University and the University of Washington announced that they had trained a math and coding-focused large language model that performs as well as OpenAI’s o1 and DeepSeek’s R1 reasoning models. It cost just $50 in cloud compute credits to build. The team reportedly used an off-the-shelf base model, then distilled Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model into it. The process of distilling AIs involves pulling the relevant information to complete a specific task from a larger AI model and transferring it to a smaller one.
What’s more, on Tuesday, researchers from Hugging Face released a competitor to OpenAI’s Deep Research and Google Gemini’s (also) Deep Research tools, dubbed Open Deep Research, which they developed in just 24 hours. “While powerful LLMs are now freely available in open-source, OpenAI didn’t disclose much about the agentic framework underlying Deep Research,” Hugging Face wrote in its announcement post. “So we decided to embark on a 24-hour mission to reproduce their results and open-source the needed framework along the way!” It reportedly costs an estimated $20 in cloud compute credits, and would require less than 30 minutes, to train.
Hugging Face’s model subsequently notched a 55% accuracy on the General AI Assistants (GAIA) benchmark, which is used to test the capacities of agentic AI systems. By comparison, OpenAI’s Deep Research scored between 67 – 73% accuracy, depending on the response methodologies. Granted, the 24-hour model doesn’t perform quite as well as OpenAI’s offering, but it also didn’t take billions of dollars and the energy generation capacity of a mid-sized European nation to train.
These efforts follow news from January that a team out of University of California, Berkeley’s Sky Computing Lab managed to train their Sky T1 reasoning model for around $450 in cloud compute credits. The team’s Sky-T1-32B-Preview model proved the equal of early o1-preview reasoning model release. As more of these open-source competitors to OpenAI’s industry dominance emerge, their mere existence calls into question whether the company’s plan of spending half a trillion dollars to build AI data centers and energy production facilities is really the answer.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is on track to release in Fall 2025, Take-Two says
Grand Theft Auto 6 is on track to release in Fall 2025, Take-Two says
Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track to release later this year, Take-Two says.
During an investor presentation discussing its Q3 earnings for the financial year 2025, the publisher confirmed that the game is still listed as “launching Fall of Calendar 2025”.
It also says Borderlands 4 is still planned to release later this year.
Take-Two hasn’t given more concrete release dates for either game, however, which may prove frustrating for other publishers who are reportedly deciding not to nail down release dates for their own products, so as not to clash with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
“We forecast that Calendar Year 2025 will be an inflection point for Take-Two,” the publisher wrote in a statement, “from the groundbreaking release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in the Fall, to the unmatched pipeline that 2K is set to deliver, including Civilization 7 on February 11, ******: The Old Country in the Summer, and Borderlands 4.
Last month Bloomberg claimed that rival game publishers are waiting as long as possible to commit to their release dates for next Fall, because of GTA 6’s planned release.
They want to see if GTA 6 will make its deadline or be delayed until 2026, with the goal being to put significant distance between the release of their own games and Rockstar’s, it’s claimed.
Take-Two itself has said it’s planning to avoid clashes for its biggest titles, meaning Borderlands 4 is unlikely to release with any close proximity to GTA 6.
“I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily,” CEO Strauss Zelnick told Variety last year.

Netanyahu gifts President Trump a golden pager in Washington DC
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gifted US President Donald Trump a golden pager while on his visit to Washington DC this week.
The pager represents of “a turning point in the war” when Israel carried out a deadly operation against Hezbollah in September 2024, according to Netanyahu’s office. In the operation, Israel targeted pagers used by members of the Iran-backed militant group, causing them to explode.
Dozens of people were killed and thousands injured in the attacks. Israel said it was tailored to target only Hezbollah members, but civilians were among the victims, Lebanese officials said.
