Pauline Jones’ daughter, Bethany Fields, was murdered by her ex partner in 2019
The mother of a young woman who was ******* by her former boyfriend has called for a changes in how domestic ****** victims are treated.
Student Bethany Rae Fields was murdered by Paul Crowther in Huddersfield in 2019, even though she had warned the police he had made threats to her and others in the month before her ******.
Bethany’s mother, Pauline Jones, has set up a campaign in her daughter’s memory and said the authorities should act quicker to protect abused women who are asking for help.
West Yorkshire Police said it had apologised to Bethany’s parents for having missed “opportunities” to protect her.
The campaign, BRF, uses Bethany’s initials as an acronym but also stands for Believe, React Fast, which is the message Ms Jones wants to take to the police and others with responsibility for looking after domestic ****** victims.
Family handout/West Yorkshire Police
Bethany Fields had told the police about her former partner’s threatening behaviour before he ******* her
Ms Jones said: “My daughter was not believed. They didn’t react and they didn’t do it fast enough.”
She said her daughter had been intelligent, articulate and a good communicator.
“If someone of my daughter’s calibre could not make herself believed and listened to, then it’s hard to imagine other women making themselves understood. They need to be taken seriously.”
She said the one thing victims did not have was time.
“That’s why react and fast is imperative. No-one knows when that perpetrator is going to strike and (when) that victim becomes a fatality.”
Pauline Jones said the way the authorities respond to domestic ****** needed to change
Crowther was given a life sentence in 2020 for fatally stabbing 21-year-old Bethany.
He admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility and Leeds Crown Court heard he had not been detained by mental health services.
This was despite him telling them he wanted to ******* others and take his own life.
Ms Jones, from Leeds, said that besides the police, Bethany had also reported concerns to her GP.
“The sharing of information would help to save many peoples’ lives,” she added.
“We live in a computerised age. Why hasn’t it been done?”
Ms Jones’ campaign was mentioned at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.
She said she felt Sir Keir Starmer’s response to her case had been “positive” and that adopting BRF would help the government’s pledge to halve domestic ********* against women and ****** over the next 10 years.
Leeds North West MP Katie White raised the BRF campaign in Parliament this week
The issue was raised in Parliament by Ms Jones’ MP Katie White.
The Labour MP for Leeds North West, said there needed to be changes in how domestic ********* was treated by society and a “cultural shift” to believing victims.
“At the moment the onus is on victims to prove they’re in danger,” she said.
“That’s not working, clearly, and it didn’t work for Bethany, sadly.”
West Yorkshire Police said it accepted the findings of a domestic ********* review and an independent policing investigation following Bethany’s ******.
The force said the recommendations from those inquiries had been implemented and that its approach to domestic ****** had been “developed and amended” in “many ways”.
“We have met with Bethany’s parents and apologised to them for our failings and the lost opportunities to protect their daughter,” the force said.
“While we are committed to continual learning, we realise this won’t bring back Bethany, who lost her life in truly horrific circumstances.”

NZ prevail as Edwards’ exit cripples Cairns comeback
NZ prevail as Edwards’ exit cripples Cairns comeback
Cairns have been left to rue the early exit of star Rob Edwards as they fell to an eighth-straight loss and New Zealand jumped to the top of the NBL standings.
The Breakers won 77-69 in Cairns on Saturday afternoon, the hosts coming from 12 points behind to grab a fourth-quarter lead before New Zealand’s 12-point run sealed the contest.
Edwards was the key for the Taipans, the import with 33 points at the final break as he sought to become just the seventh Taipan to have a 40-point game.
But he gave away an unnecessary fourth foul early in the term and then was called for an offensive foul just as Cairns had hit the lead, forcing him out of the game.
They scored just three points in the final five minutes and 10 in the quarter, Matt Mooney (15 points) hitting a long-range dagger to push his side back in front as part of a player-of-the-match performance
In his last game for the Breakers before a move to Italy’s Olimpia Milano, Freddie Gillespie (eight points, eight rebounds) hustle created opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Edwards had scored half of the Taipans’ points when he fouled out, Akoldah Gak (11 points, eight rebounds) the only other Taipans player in double-digits as he went five-of-seven from the field.
The Breakers were missing Jonah Bolden (calf) while guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright (11 points, seven rebounds, five assists) shot just three-of-11 from the field.
The Breakers’ teenage ******** Next Star Karim Lopez produced a handful of highlight reel moments in a nine-point, three rebound performance.
Cairns fell to 3-9 while the Breakers enter the FIBA international playing window at 7-3.

GA mother arrested after child walks less than a mile from their home
GA mother arrested after child walks less than a mile from their home
A mother was charged after deputies said her child walked less than a mile to the store from their north Georgia home.
On Oct. 30, Fannin County deputies were called to the area of Mineral Bluff Highway and Georgia 60 regarding a child in the road.
[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks]
A witness told deputies they saw a young boy walking down the road and into the Dollar General. According to authorities, when the witness asked the boy if he was OK, he said “yes.” She asked if he needed help, he said “no.”
She asked where his parents were and what his mother’s name was and he told her she worked at the post office and her name was Brittany Patterson,41. She asked if he needed help again and he said “never mind” and he then ran behind a ***** station.
Deputies said they searched the area for the child and found him on Railroad Avenue, a little over a mile from his home.
According to the report, deputies said the child seemed to be confused as to what was going and when asked where he lived, he pointed in the direction of Hwy. 60. Deputies asked for his mother’s name and number but were only able to give her number.
Fannin County officials spoke with Patterson over the phone. When they told her that her son was out on Railroad Avenue, deputies said “Patterson seemed very unsurprised or concerned with this information.”
TRENDING STORIES:
The report states that Patterson told deputies she was in Ellijay with one of her other children for an appointment. She told deputies that her son was supposed to go with her to the appointment and she waited in the car for him for five minutes and he never came to get in the car. Patterson told deputies she went in the house and he wasn’t in the house and “couldn’t find him anywhere,” so she left because she did not know if he was in the woods or where he was and she was running late for her other child’s appointment.
In the report, Patterson said, her son is “very defiant” and “doesn’t listen to her” and said she was at her “wit’s end” with dealing with him.
When deputies asked Patterson why she didn’t call the sheriff’s office to let them know her child was missing, she responded that “she didn’t know to do that if she just wasn’t sure where he was.”
Deputies said an hour had passed since her son had been missing. Deputies later arrived at Patterson’s home. She was arrested and charged with reckless conduct.
The Division of Family and Children Services was also contacted.

A GoFundMe created by the National Associations of Parents, Inc. is raising money for the family with the case. ParentsUSA says they will defend Patterson against the ********* charge and push back against DFCS’s efforts to impose a “safety plan.”

T-Mobile’s network was among the systems hacked in a damaging ******** cyber-espionage operation that gained entry into multiple U.S. and international telecommunications companies, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday citing people familiar with the matter.
Hackers linked to a ******** intelligence agency were able to breach T-Mobile as part of a months-long campaign to spy on the cellphone communications of high-value intelligence targets, the Journal added, without saying when the ******* took place.
“T-Mobile is closely monitoring this industry-wide *******,” a company spokesperson told Reuters in an email.
“At this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been impacted in any significant way, and we have no evidence of impacts to customer information.”
It was unclear what information, if any, was taken about T-Mobile customers’ calls and communications records, according to the WSJ report.
On Wednesday, The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. cyber watchdog agency CISA said China-linked hackers have intercepted surveillance data intended for ********* law enforcement agencies after breaking into an unspecified number of telecom companies.
Earlier in October, the Journal reported that ******** hackers accessed the networks of U.S. broadband providers, including Verizon Communications, AT&T and Lumen Technologies, and obtained information from systems the federal government uses for court-authorized wiretapping.
Beijing has previously denied claims by the U.S. government and others that it has used hackers to break into foreign computer systems.

Ireland 22-19 Argentina: Better Ireland still seeking answers after nail-biting Pumas win
Seeking a response to a jarring defeat against the All ******* seven days prior, Ireland’s victory against Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on Friday served to answer some questions while presenting a few more.
Andy Farrell called it “three or four games in one” and, as such, there was good, bad and ugly in the host’s performance.
Having taken the lead in the second minute, Ireland were never behind but, after ******** to score in the second half, ended the contest against 14 men clinging on to a slender 22-19 advantage.
The game had seemed in hand at half-time, yet come the final whistle the overriding emotion in Dublin was one of relief.
Without consecutive losses since the opening two fixtures of the 2021 Six Nations, Ireland’s response to setbacks has so often been emphatic.
Whether it be overcoming a first Test defeat to win the series in New Zealand in 2022, putting their World Cup 2023 heartache behind them with a stirring away win in France to start the most recent Six Nations, or looking decidedly outplayed in the first Test against South ******* this summer only to turn the tables seven days later – Farrell’s Ireland have proven masters at lifting themselves from the canvas.
But, beaten so decisively by the All ******* last week when discipline was a massive issue and the ******* misfired, rarely in recent times had it felt like there was so much to fix from one game to the next.
Prior to kick-off, Farrell said some of his players were “lucky” to get the opportunity to atone for their opening autumn performance. When asked after the nerve-shredding 82 minutes if he had got the desired response, he replied “in parts”.

Dallas woman, 19, ****** elderly man over phone in Facebook Marketplace meetup: police
DALLAS – Dallas police arrested a 19-year-old woman for the ******* of a man during a Facebook Marketplace meetup.
It happened last week just feet away from an elementary school and a busy Dallas freeway with multiple witnesses nearby.
Police say Ahmad Alkhalaf, a 66-year-old husband and father from Sasche, was murdered in the middle of the afternoon at an Oak Cliff gas station just off I-35 and South Marsalis Avenue.
Shots rang out last Friday around 3 p.m. just as nearby Felix G. Botello Elementary School was letting out.
Two Dallas ISD police officers rushed to the Valero and found Alkhalaf shot next to his pickup truck, according to court records. He later ***** at the hospital.
Dallas detectives learned Alkhalaf was there to sell a ****** iPhone 15 to someone he’d been communicating with on Facebook Marketplace.
Amaya Medrano mugshot, Dallas County Jail
Police obtained multiple surveillance videos from nearby businesses. They say the video showed 19-year-old Amaya Medrano and Alkhalaf had a short conversation, and Medrano ran off.
As Alkhalaf followed her, cameras captured Medrano turning around and ********* Alkhalaf, police said.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit FOX 4 obtained Thursday, investigators matched Medrano’s distinct tattoos on her face and neck to her social media accounts.
Just three days after the fatal *********, police noticed the same Facebook account communicating with Alkhalaf was selling a ****** iPhone 15 on the Marketplace.
Wednesday, Dallas police announced Medrano was in custody by U.S. Marshals and was booked into the Dallas County jail.
Alkhalaf’s family tells FOX 4 he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. They went on to say he was a humble man who worked hard to support his family locally and abroad.
The family is left speechless and horrified by this senseless act of *********, saying Alkhalaf life was taken over a cellphone.
Court records show Medrano was serving a five-year probation sentence for aggravated ******** with a deadly ******* after pleading guilty to stabbing someone last year.
Medrano is now charged with capital *******. Her bond is set at $1 million.

Baby Red Panda at Edinburgh Zoo Tragically Passes Away Over ‘Stress Due to Nearby Fireworks’
Baby Red Panda at Edinburgh Zoo Tragically Passes Away Over ‘Stress Due to Nearby Fireworks’
The ****** of a baby Red Panda is believed to have been caused by fireworks set off for a holiday. Zookeepers at the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland say that it was pyrotechnics that caused their 3-month-old panda Roxie to choke on her own ****** after being stressed by the commotion going on November 5.
The fireworks were believed to come from people celebrating Guy Fawkes Day. A holiday meant to mark the ******* attempt to ***** up the British Parliament.
Sadly the noise had disastrous effects on Roxie and she ***** on November 5, ABC News reports.
“Roxie had access to her den, but the frightening noises seem to have been too much for her,” Ben Supple, deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which owns Edinburgh Zoo told the news outlet. “Very sadly, she choked on her ****** on Bonfire Night and our vets believe this was probably a reaction to fireworks.”
Related: Red Panda’s Gentle Way of Enjoying a Snack Is Such a Timeline Cleanse
Tragically, Roxie’s mother ***** only five days before she did, making this ******* of time very precarious for the baby Red Panda. At such a young age, many small mammals can be vulnerable. Most don’t even reach the end of their first year. Employees at the zoo now believe that fireworks set off between Halloween and Guy Fawkes Day might’ve contributed to Roxie’s mother’s ****** too.
Roxie had been doing well on her own before the fireworks. She’d been eating on her own and was responding well to her caretakers. But sadly, the explosions were too much for the panda and it led to her ******. It’s particularly tragic given the rarity of baby Red Pandas in the world. The Red Panda is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Some countries have protected the species, but there ******** less than 10,000 pandas in the wild.
The ****** has been so upsetting it’s prompted officials to call for reform. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is now calling for tighter restrictions on fireworks. The zoo is joining that call and has asked for a ban on fireworks sales and for lighter pyrotechnic displays.
According to BBC News, a spokesperson for the *** government’s department for business and trade, which controls the sales of fireworks recently spoke out about the ******.
“We are sorry to hear of the ****** of Roxie the panda and our thoughts are with the team who cared for her at Edinburgh Zoo,” he said. “We endeavor to keep pets and the public safe and that’s why we launched a new fireworks safety campaign this season to help people use them safely and appropriately.”

****** penalty sought for an Idaho gang member accused of ******** a man while on the run
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Prosecutors intend to seek the ****** penalty if an Idaho white supremacist gang member is convicted of ******** a man while he was on the run after ********* officers in a plot to help a fellow gang member escape from prison.
Nez Perce County Prosecutor Justin Coleman announced Thursday that the ****** penalty would be sought if Nicholas Umphenour is convicted of a ******* charge in the March ****** of James Mauney, 83, of Juliaetta, KHQ-TV reported.
Umphenour appeared in Nez Perce County Court on Thursday via video from the county jail and is scheduled for an arraignment Dec. 12. He’s being held without bond, news outlets reported. Umphenour’s attorney, Brian Marx, did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.
Umphenour was sentenced to life in prison last month in a separate court case in which he helped inmate Skylar Meade escape from a Boise hospital where Meade had been taken for treatment of self-inflicted injuries. Early on March 20, Umphenour began ********* as corrections officers and Meade were leaving the hospital.
Umphenour shot two of the officers, and a third was shot when another officer mistook him for the shooter and opened *****, police said. All three survived.
Umphenour pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting escape and aggravated ******** and battery on law enforcement officers in that case.
Meade and Umphenour then fled, investigators said, driving several hours to north-central Idaho.
Mauney had taken his dogs for a walk on a local trail later that morning and never returned. His body was found miles away near Leland, Idaho.
Police said that soon after, the two men headed back to southern Idaho. Mauney’s stolen minivan was found in Twin Falls, where the men were arrested, police have said.
“Seeking the ****** penalty is appropriate in this case considering the defendant’s complete lack of regard for the life of Mr. Mauney,” Coleman said in a statement. “We’ll continue to ****** in both this case and the co-defendant’s case to get justice for the victim.”
Meade also has been sentenced to life in prison in the March 20 escape. He is facing the same ******* charge in Nez Perce County and possible ****** penalty if convicted. He has had a not guilty plea entered for him while his case continues.

This latest ***** makes the second significant Bitcoin ***** for Bhutan in recent weeks, after one for $66 million upon Bitcoin’s reach for $70,000. ‘Who Better to Be in Charge Than a Guy Whose Brain Was Partially Devoured by a Worm?’
‘Who Better to Be in Charge Than a Guy Whose Brain Was Partially Devoured by a Worm?’
Jimmy Kimmel reacted to Donald Trump nominating Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a prominent vaccine skeptic — as secretary of health and human services during his “Jimmy Kimmel Live” monologue on Thursday night, saying the decision is “heavy on the F.”
“Who better to be in charge of health and humans than a guy whose brain was partially devoured by a worm?” Kimmel said, referring to RFK Jr.’s revelation that a brain scan abnormality “was caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then *****,” as the New York Times reported in May.
More from Variety
RFK Jr., the son of late U.S. attorney general and senator Robert F. Kennedy, also ran for president in the 2024 election — initially against Joe Biden in the Democratic primary before launching an independent campaign and eventually endorsing Trump. Beyond his anti-vaccine views, RFK Jr. was also embroiled in a scandal in September when New York Magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi admitted to having a “personal relationship” with him.
“This tells you all you need to know about our country right now: RFK got caught having phone **** with a reported and she was fired,” Kimmel continued. “What happened to him? They made him secretary of health and human services. Why not? I mean, if Matt Gaetz is going to be attorney general, bring in Gary Busey to run the CIA. Go for broke!”
Gaetz was the subject of Kimmel’s ire during Wednesday night’s episode, when he blasted the former Congressman, who until his resignation to pursue the attorney general position was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegations of ******* misconduct and illicit ***** use. He has also been the subject of a federal investigation for allegedly **** trafficking a 17-year-old girl. Gaetz has denied all allegations against him.
“You know, in a lot of jobs being investigated for **** trafficking underage ****** would hurt your chance for advancement,” Kimmel said. “But in the Trump administration, you can list it on your résumé under special skills.”

Penna, McGrath star as Strikers down Hurricanes in WBBL
Madeline Penna starred with the bat before Tahlia McGrath finished the job with the ball as the Adelaide Strikers posted an upset 38-run WBBL win over the Hobart Hurricanes.
The last-placed Strikers made 7-140 in Saturday’s clash at Adelaide Oval thanks largely to Penna’s 60 off 40 ******.
In reply, the Hurricanes were bowled out for 102 in 15.2 overs, with Elyse Villani (44 off 39 ******) the top-scorer in an otherwise horror batting display by the Hurricanes.
Strikers captain McGrath (4-13) starred with the ball, while Megan Schutt (2-14) and Anesu Mushangwe (2-18) were also crucial.
Hurricanes opener Lizelle Lee entered the match on the back of scores of 150 not out and 103.
But she was out caught behind for just eight in the second over when she attempted to belt Orla Prendergast down the ground.
The Hurricanes were on track for victory at 1-63 in the ninth over, but a collapse of 9-39 saw them fall in a heap.
The result left third-placed Hobart nursing a 4-4 record with just two games remaining before finals.
Adelaide (2-6) stay last, but the defending champions were all smiles after finally snapping their five-match losing run.
“It’s been a long time coming, and it’s so good we can get a win,” Penna told Fox Sports.
“To get it at home in front of our fans is so nice. We have really loyal fans here.
“Sometimes when you’re losing, you don’t have those people who back you. But we know our fans here at Adelaide back us in whether we’re winning or losing.
“It’s really good we could get a win for them.”
McGrath was also thrilled with the win.
“It’s been a really tough season,” McGrath said.
“We haven’t quite been up to our standard, and cricket is a brutal game when you’re not at your standards.
“We’re still trying to get something out of this season.
“It is really tough at times, but it’s easy to smile when you have games like that.”
The Strikers were in all sorts of trouble at 4-45 after eight overs when Penna strolled to the crease.
Things were still precariously placed at 6-109 in the 16th over when Penna was dropped on 44.
She received another life – again when she was on 44 – and made the most of it by guiding the Strikers to the full 20 overs.
Penna’s innings, which featured six fours and two sixes, only came to an end when she was run out on the final ball.

Manchin Finally Willing to Work With Democrats Before Trump Returns
Manchin Finally Willing to Work With Democrats Before Trump Returns
West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin may be putting his weight behind Democrats’ final push to approve Joe Biden’s pending judicial nominees.
Earlier this year, Manchin had pledged that he would not back any Biden-nominated judge who did not have at least one vote of GOP support. But now it seems Manchin is finally ready to play ball with the rest of the Democrats.
“We’re in different times right now,” Manchin told Axios when asked about his past promise to ******* Biden’s nominees. He added that “my *********** friends are under the microscope.”
Manchin previously claimed his objection was in the name of bipartisanship.
“Just one ***********. That’s all I’m asking for,” he said during a March interview with Politico. “Give me something bipartisan. This is my own little filibuster. If they can’t get one ***********, I vote for none. I’ve told [Democrats] that. I said, ‘I’m ***** and tired of it, I can’t take it anymore.’”
Manchin has voted against several of Biden’s judicial nominees based on that rule.
Senate Democrats are rushing to confirm Biden’s final nominees for federal judge positions before the party loses the chamber majority and Donald Trump returns to office in January. There are currently 45 judicial vacancies, and the Senate has 20 days left in session.

Australia to bat first in second T20 against Pakistan
Australia have won the toss and will bat first as they pursue a Twenty20 series win over Pakistan at the SCG.
Up 1-0 after Thursday night’s rain-affected win in Brisbane, Australia have kept an unchanged side for Saturday’s second match in Sydney.
Pakistan have made one change, bringing in an extra spinner in Sufiyan Muqeem for batter Haseebullah Khan.
There had been some rain in Sydney earlier in the day, but the cloud cover has cleared with the match close to a sell-out.
After being beaten 2-1 in the one-day series last week, Australia are playing without their red-ball stars ahead of the first Test in Perth on Thursday.
AUSTRALIA: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matt Short, Josh Inglis (capt), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Hardie, Tim David, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson.

Sydney bar, servo on alert after confirmed measles case
Sydney bar, servo on alert after confirmed measles case
NSW Health is urging patrons of a popular bar in Sydney’s Inner West to be on the look out for symptoms of measles after a recently returned traveller visited multiple venues while infected.
Anyone who visited Philter Brewing Public Bar in Marrickville between 6.30pm and 10pm on November 7 was being warned to monitor for symptoms after a single confirmed case of measles.
The case recently returned from southeast Asia where there are several ongoing outbreaks, and also visited Metro Petroleum on Enmore Rd in Enmore between 6.15am-7am on the same day.
The confirmed also visited the Marrickville Medical Centre on Marrickville Rd on November 10 between 9.15-11am, with all three locations in Sydney’s busy Inner West subject to the alert.
Sydney Local Health District Acting Director of Public Health Dr Isabel Hess while the locations posed no ongoing risk, anyone who visited during the subject hours could be at risk.
“Symptoms include fever, sore eyes and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body,” he said.
Camera IconPatrons of a popular bar have been urged to be on the lookout for symptoms of measles. Credit: News Corp Australia
“It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it’s important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until November 28, 2024.
“Anyone who develops symptoms should call their GP or emergency department and say that they may have measles to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients.”
Measles is a viral infection that causes fever and a distinctive rash. Highly contagious, it can be spread through droplets through coughing and sneezing in close contact with other people.
While it can be deadly and debilitating, measles is also highly preventable with multiple rounds of vaccines. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) is given to children from 12 months.
“We want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. The vaccine can prevent the ******** even after exposure, if given early enough,” Dr Hess said.
“Anyone born after 1965 needs to ensure they have had two doses of measles vaccine. This is especially important before overseas travel, as measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions.”
The vaccine is given free for children at 12 and 18 months of age.
It is also free in NSW for anyone born after 1965 who hasn’t already had two doses.

We Asked Young Men Why They Voted for Donald Trump—Here’s What They Said
We Asked Young Men Why They Voted for Donald Trump—Here’s What They Said
Nic Sumners, a 21-year-old cosmetic car repairman from Virginia, says he is pro-choice. But when he voted in the 2024 presidential election, he did so for Donald Trump.
Despite his personal beliefs, he says that Trump talks about the ********* people in a way that resonates with him, without—in his opinion—faulting him for his gender and ******* orientation.
“I’m a straight white man, and I feel like we take the blame for a lot of things,” Sumners says.
“Of course there are bad guys,” he adds, insisting he’s not one of them just because he voted for Trump. But what appealed to him about Donald Trump was that “his campaign was not coming after us. He was highlighting the ********* people, which we are. It doesn’t matter what ****** you are, what you may identify as. Since I wasn’t excluded, I resonated with it.”
Economics also played a part—Sumner’s mother lost her home during Joe Biden’s presidency (though he says she actually voted for Kamala Harris), and he’s struggled to afford his own rent. He appreciates Trump’s “emphasis on the economy and building America up again.”
But one of the biggest issues for him has been the way men in general are assumed to be inherently bad people because of their politics or their gender.
“It’s a touchy subject,” he admits. “The people I’ve spoken to who voted for Harris are constantly saying that we’re *******, that we’re misogynistic, that, you know, we’re transphobic. And it’s like they don’t understand that most people aren’t like that. Of course, there’s those fringe people who are, but most people just want to live and not be bothered by name-calling.”
And so Sumners became one of the 55% of young male voters aged 18 to 29 who voted for Trump this election. A huge jump from 2020, when 41% of 18-to-29-year-old men backed him. It’s also in direct contrast to young women—58% of whom backed Harris.
“I feel like there’s this cultural frustration that young men have that they’re not allowed to be young men.”Benji Backer
So why did so many men swing right during the 2024 election? Much has been said about Trump’s embrace of masculinity throughout his campaign—traversing the podcast sphere with often provocative, highly popular personalities like Adin Ross, influencer and wrestler Logan Paul, Flagrant’s Andrew Schulz, and of course, Joe Rogan. And then there’s the enduring image of 71-year-old former WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan ripping his shirt off at the *********** National Convention.
Others have suggested that, because Trump has proudly taken ownership for the overturning of Roe v. Wade (and as a consequence empowering the curbs across the country on reproductive freedom), young male voters must not care at all about women’s rights. This line of thinking has been emboldened by controversial figures like far-right pundit and proud incel Nick Fuentes, who celebrated Trump’s victory with wildly offensive takes like “Your body, my choice.”
But truth be told, that’s not where the majority of the young men I’ve spoken with stand—even if they proudly voted for Trump. Many young men say they voted for the former president not because they are anti-choice or against human rights or are even that pro-masculinity, but because they’re tired of feeling bad for being a man.
I’ve interviewed young men who echo Sumners’s concerns with what he sees as an overfixation on gender from the left. While it’s difficult, they say, to point to policies that are explicitly anti-man, they argue they’ve been made to feel uncomfortable for being who they are. “I feel like there’s this cultural frustration that young men have that they’re not allowed to be young men,” says 26-year-old Benji Backer from Arizona. “That probably went too far. No one’s telling women they can’t be women.”
Backer, author of The ************* Environmentalist, says he sees growing support for Trump in his community—including among people who also care about left-leaning social issues such as access to reproductive health care. He points to the fact that, as a state, Arizona voted both to protect ********* and for Trump: “Young people specifically, we’re trying to make it, trying to find our way in the world, get stable jobs, incomes, survive without living with parents.”
While young women may struggle to understand these young men’s viewpoints—especially with so many fundamental rights under ******* and women’s health care already lethally compromised in states with ********* bans—many young men say their focus is more on equal economic opportunity than *********.
“It’s very hard for Republicans to speak up. I’m afraid of having a bad rep with a professor.”Coby
In some cities across the country, young women make more money than men (though in the vast majority, men still make more). They’re also attending college at higher rates. And single women are buying homes at higher rates than single men. So some of the tropes about their role in enabling the patriarchy no longer resonate with today’s youngest men, some of whom say they don’t have first-hand experience with that world order.
“We feel really blamed for things that we haven’t had an opportunity to impact,” Backer says, adding that he has tried to ensure pay equity across his business. “I have always prioritized that in everything that I do, and so it doesn’t feel good to feel like I’m being blamed. I get told all the time, ‘You’re a white man, sit down and wait your turn,’ and it’s like, ‘Well, I can’t change the fact that I’m white, I can’t change the fact that I’m a man, I can’t change the fact that decades or centuries ago, people made bad decisions.’ All I can do is do what I can do now. And what I’m doing now is treating people as fairly as possible because that’s what I firmly believe in.”
For Coby, a 19-year-old student at the University of Michigan, it was a combination of identity politics issues as well as economics that drew him to Trump. He was in high school during the 2020 election, and while he grew up a *********** and was supportive of Trump before he could vote, he says he started learning more about politics amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, he says, he prioritizes economic growth, trying to end wars, and “common sense policies,” adding that he appreciates Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s stance on junk food and was glad when Trump brought him into his orbit: “A lot of young guys are really into health now more than ever. There’s this whole wave about rejecting processed foods.”
But Coby, who only wants to be identified by his first name, highlights the way men are talked about as oppressors by some on the left as one of the reasons he sees men trending politically right. “When you tell a young white guy, like, ‘Hey, you’re an oppressor, and because you’re white, you have privileges that your ****** and Hispanic peers didn’t have, and you’re inherently at fault, or you’re guilty for that, which is what a lot of the left wings or Democrats are saying, they’re gonna ******* that,” he says. “We’re not *******; we’re not misogynistic. We’re just normal people, and we [are] friends with everyone. We’re tired of hearing a lot of this BS from a lot of the far left.”
These concerns outweigh, for him, issues like ********* rights—even though Coby is pro-choice. But “because Trump got rid of Roe v. Wade,” he says, the issue was not a priority for him when casting his ballot in Michigan. “For the past four years the Biden administration couldn’t really do anything about it to federally protect ********* rights.” In his opinion, “That issue is kind of settled. It’s been given to the states.”
A lot of young men I spoke to, like Coby, did care about ********* but also felt it wasn’t their issue—even the ones, like 19-year-old Alex Georges, from Pennsylvania, who planned to vote for Harris. “With *********, obviously men have their say about it. But women are the ones that…it’s their body.”
An issue that a lot of men did feel was important to them, though, was the ability to speak freely without being ostracized for viewpoints that don’t align with that of their peers. Coby says he feels this most on campus. Last week, Coby says, students and professors expressed their sadness with the election outcome. “I would not have the courage to raise my hand and then speak, ‘Hey, no, I’m happy with the election outcome,’” he says, adding, “It’s very hard for Republicans to speak up. I’m afraid of having a bad rep with a professor.”
For students like Coby, this can lead to resentment. “It’s very isolating. I feel like there’s a sense of moral superiority that occurs. When it comes to people who are within academia, they have this sense of superiority for who they vote for and what they value. And if you’re against that, then they kind of look down upon you.”
Provocative as this might be to many women, many of the young men I’ve met over the last year have told me that they are feeling marginalized, especially by the left. Joe Mitchell, 27, from Iowa, tells me, “I think young men have felt like they have been suppressed to a certain extent.”
Mitchell started an organization called Run GenZ, which recruits and trains young conservatives to run for public office across the country. He also, in line with so many of his peers, voted for Trump.
“Young men have started rejecting some of the ideology of the ‘woke’ set of standards that are put in place for them,” he says. “The Trump campaign specifically targeted that demographic and courted them pretty heavily. There was already a large sense of young men wanting to find a party or people that would help embrace them.”

Teacher Asks a Parent to Include the Whole Class in Her Son’s Birthday Party. Then the Conversation Takes a Turn
Teacher Asks a Parent to Include the Whole Class in Her Son’s Birthday Party. Then the Conversation Takes a Turn
A Reddit user tried to flip the script on a teacher — but it backfired

A parent is asking if they’re wrong for suggesting their son’s teacher host his birthday party at her home — but an act of malicious compliance quickly turned sour.
On Reddit, a woman explains that she planned to host two of her son’s friends for a small sleepover for his birthday over the weekend. Only one of the two kids invited is a member of her son’s class, and invites were sent via text message to the two students’ parents.
“Before my son even got home from the bus I got a call from his teacher ‘Lorna’ requesting that the party involve all the students in the class,” the Redditor writes.
The parent politely declined, noting that her apartment was not large enough to accommodate everyone in the class (in addition to their guardians), and told the teacher “she has no say in who is at my home ever.”

“She says that because other students are involved, she does and that I should have the party somewhere that can allow all students,” the poster continues.
In response to what other commenters have called a “power trip” from the teacher, the Redditor suggested the teacher host the party instead.
“I tell her ‘Okay, what’s your address?’ and when she asks why, I told [her] that since you think you have a say and you want all your students to be a part, we might as well have the party [at] her house.”

The teacher did not share her address, but after the phone call was over, the poster admits she looked up the teacher’s address using her social media accounts, and drafted an email inviting the students in the class to the teacher’s home for the son’s birthday party.
“I was NOT planning on actually sending that to anyone else but her, I just wanted to prove the point and felt I was being sarcastic but I know tone is hard online,” the mom admits. “She responded to not send it and to do whatever I want for the birthday, she does not care anymore.”

The Redditor says they’re looking for alternative perspectives because their husband “called me unhinged” — and many Redditors agree that she took it too far.
“Stopping the teacher’s power play by throwing her logic at her? Genius!” one commenter admitted. “But then you had to be f— creepy about it towards the end. Public or not, that was weird and your email could have been interpreted as thinly veiled ‘I know where you live’ threat.”
“You quickly went from being deeply justified and right to possibly opening yourself up to legal ramifications… especially with the paper trail evidence you so willingly created,” another commenter wrote, suggesting the poster apologize to the teacher at once.

Sydney teenager breaks Wanderers hearts in ALW derby
Sydney teenager breaks Wanderers hearts in ALW derby
Sydney FC avoided their worst start in A-League Women history courtesy of a late goal by 18-year-old forward Caley Tallon-Henniker in a pulsating 1-0 derby win over Western Sydney.
In other ALW clashes on Saturday, defending premiers Melbourne City dropped points for the first time this season in a 2-2 draw with Central Coast, and Adelaide ******* won 2-0 away to end Canberra *******’s two-game winning streak.
The Sydney derby at Leichhardt Oval had a lot on the line for last season’s ALW championship winners.
The Sky Blues, who lost their grip on the 2023-24 premiership with two shock losses late in the campaign, had lost their opening two matches this season. Never in the club’s history had they been winless after three rounds.
Super-sub Tallon-Henniker, who also scored in her previous derby clash, came off the bench to score in the 86th minute to break the Wanderers’ hearts.
In a match where composure in front of goal was often lacking, the teenager positioned herself to receive a Shay Hollman pass on the edge of the box and slammed it into the roof of the net.
“That’s incredible,” Tallon-Henniker told Paramount after the win.
“Last time I played Wanderers I scored a goal. I said, ‘maybe it will happen again’ and it did. I am pretty happy.
“Growing up I loved Sydney, so the Sydney derby was always the one in the house to watch. To be able to play in two of them now, the atmosphere is second to none.”
Sydney have not lost their past 10 derbies. The Wanderers have won just two of 23, their last victory in 2019. They will rue the missed chances that cost them dearly on Saturday.
Unmarked defender Paige Hayward squandered the best opportunity from close range after a pinpoint cross from midfielder Talia Younis.
Sky Blues forward Shea Connors threatened and also sprayed a golden chance wide after doing well to control the ball with her first touch.
The Wanderers created space and opportunities, but either the last pass was poor or the final shot wide.
Striker Sophie Harding was one of the culprits. On the cusp of half-time, forward Cushla Rue was clear but bungled her first touch into the arms of Sydney goalkeeper Brianna Edwards.
Connors’ speed made her a target in the second half and she did make an impact but lacked support at crucial stages, before Tallon-Henniker stepped up to win it.
The early-season form of Adelaide striker Fiona Worts has been outstanding. The Englishwoman has four goals this campaign after netting with a clinical strike against Canberra on Saturday. Emily Condon had opened the scoring.
Mariners midfielder Isabel Gomez celebrated her call-up to the Matildas squad with a player-of-the-match display against Melbourne City as the visitors twice came back from a goal down.
Gomez was the provider for the side’s first goal to Annalise Rasmussen, before equalising in the 76th with a left-foot shot of her own.
