  1. Scientists develop next-gen window technology that could solve major energy problem: ‘A significant advancement’ Scientists develop next-gen window technology that could solve major energy problem: ‘A significant advancement’ Scientists are inching the world closer to smart windows that can make a big dent in energy costs while boosting comfort for those inside. The findings of a study published in the Journal of Photonics for Energy reveal a promising novel solution to one of the challenges plaguing the tech. Conventional smart windows do an admirable job of adjusting to outdoor heat and light to maximize conditions inside with minimal energy. Managing visible light and infrared radiation (IR) at the same time is where it becomes problematic, per a news release on the study. Their proposed solution is able to overcome this, leading to superior visibility, comfort, and energy efficiency. The team accomplished that goal by putting liquid crystals and nanoporous microparticles together to form a thin device that quickly adjusts its transparency to manage heat and light. They deployed a vanadium dioxide surface as well to optimize performance. All of the innovations paid off in blocking IR, quickening response time, and cutting down on required materials. “Overall, the hybrid device represents a significant advancement in smart window technology, offering a comprehensive solution for energy-efficient and comfortable indoor environments,” said corresponding author Ibrahim Abdulhalim. The scientist’s innovation joins other efforts to unlock the potential of smart windows. The tech can save energy smartly, slashing air-conditioning costs by shielding inhabitants from the sun’s heat. When it’s colder, conversely, the smart windows leverage the heat from outside to warm the buildings. Watch now: What will it take to mainstream sustainability? Widespread adoption of the tech could cut energy costs by 20% compared to conventional windows and reduce carbon pollution annually in the U.S. by a whopping 73 million metric tons, according to the Department of Energy. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology developed its own solution with self-cleaning smart windows featuring glare reduction and enhanced privacy. A Nanyang Technological University group took on the challenge with coatings that cycle between different colors at varying temperatures and could find a home on smart windows. These advancements will help make buildings more sustainable, thereby lowering energy costs and the demand for electricity. In turn, this could lower our collective reliance on dirty energy sources like gas and oil that contribute to the troubling warming of the planet. It would also aid in alleviating strain on the electric grid during heat waves and cold snaps. The scientists were pleased with their progress in smart window tech but conceded there is still work to be done for it to be a “practically valuable” option. They cited improving the nanopattern design as the most pressing task. 3. Europe will not be part of Ukraine peace talks, says US Europe will not be part of Ukraine peace talks, says US Europe won’t have a seat at the table for Ukraine peace talks, Donald Trump’s lead Ukraine envoy said, after Washington sent a questionnaire to European capitals to ask what they could contribute to security guarantees for Kyiv. Trump shocked European allies this week by calling Russian President Vladimir Putin without consulting them or Kyiv beforehand and declaring an immediate start to Ukraine peace talks. Trump administration officials have also made clear in recent days that they expect European allies in NATO to take primary responsibility for the region as the US now has other priorities, such as border security and countering China. Asked if he could assure the audience that Ukrainians and Europeans would be at the table for talks, General Keith Kellogg told a global security conference in Munich on Saturday: “The answer to that last question (regarding Europeans), just as you framed it, the answer is no.” Ukrainians, however, will “of course” be at the table, he said, adding it would be foolish to suggest otherwise. This triggered an immediate rebuke from European leaders. “There’s no way in which we can have discussions or negotiations about Ukraine, Ukraine’s future or European security structure, without Europeans,” Finland’s President Alexander Stubb told the same security conference in Munich. “But this means that Europe needs to get its act together. Europe needs to talk less and do more.” Stubb said the questionnaire the US sent to Europeans “will force Europeans to think”. A European diplomat said the US document included six questions with one specifically for European Union member states. “The Americans are approaching European capitals and asking how many soldiers they are ready to deploy,” one diplomat said. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also urged Europeans to get their act together. “And to my European friends, I would say, get into the debate, not by complaining that you might, yes or no, be at the table, but by coming up with concrete proposals, ideas, ramp up (defence) spending,” he said in Munich. France is discussing with its allies the possibility of holding an informal meeting among European leaders on Ukraine to discuss these matters, although nothing has been decided at this stage, a French presidency official said on Saturday. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said it would take place on Monday. Kellogg told the conference that talks aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine could focus on territorial concessions from Russia and targeting Putin’s oil revenues. “Russia is really a petrostate,” he said, adding that Western powers needed to do more regarding effectively enforcing sanctions on Russia. Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for the creation of a European army, saying the continent could no longer be sure of protection from the United States and would only get respect from Washington with a strong military. In an impassioned speech to the annual Munich Security Conference of global policymakers, Zelenskiy said an address by US Vice President JD Vance the previous day had made clear the relationship between Europe and the United States was changing. “Let’s be honest – now we can’t rule out the possibility that America might say no to Europe on issues that threaten it,” said Zelenskiy, speaking as the war triggered by Russia’s invasion of his country is set to enter its fourth year. He said a European army – which would include Ukraine – was necessary so that the continent’s “future depends only on Europeans – and decisions about Europeans are made in Europe”. European nations cooperate militarily primarily within NATO, but governments have so far rejected various calls for the creation of a single European army over the years, arguing that defence is a matter of national sovereignty. A senior official from an eastern member state of the European Union responded sceptically to Zelenskiy’s proposal for a European army, saying: “There is a European military force called NATO.” Zelenskiy said Kyiv would never accept a deal made behind its back, and predicted Putin would try to have Trump attend Moscow’s May 9 World War Two victory anniversary parade “not as a respected leader but as a prop in his own performance”. 4. New data reveals dramatic shift in global car sales — here’s why buyers should be paying attention New data reveals dramatic shift in global car sales — here’s why buyers should be paying attention Reuters reports that electric vehicle sales — both full electric and hybrid options rose 25% in 2024 across the world — a record number. Incentives and emission targets pushed EV sales in China and aided Britain in overtaking Germany as Europe’s biggest battery-electric market in 2024, research firm Rho Motion said. China’s sales rose almost 37% in December, helping them reach 11 million for 2024. Canada and the United States saw 8.8% growth, along with a 0.7% rise in sales in Europe in December 2023. Other countries cumulatively saw a 26.4% increase in the same month. Research firm Rho Motion said in a note to Reuters: “The removal of subsidies in Germany had a devastating impact on the whole European market. If the U.S. follows suit, we may see the same there.” However, as of September 2024, Reuters reports that ******* companies may be able to deduct up to 40% of the value of newly purchased electric and qualifying zero-emission vehicles from their tax bill during the purchase year if a proposed tax reduction bill is approved. Unfortunately, Americans who haven’t already purchased and got tax breaks from an EV may be in a pickle when it comes to savings. The related subsidy in the United States falls under the Inflation Reduction Act, created under the Biden administration in 2022 — but policies under the new administration put it at risk. Under this subsidy, EV buyers could qualify for up to a $7,500 tax credit, depending on the year and model. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? According to Reuters, automakers facing tougher European Union 2025 emissions rules are planning to buy carbon credits from EV companies to avoid hefty fines, an EU filing showed in January 2025. What are carbon credits? Devised as a way to reduce polluting gases, these permits allow a company to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide or other gases. However, the set amount allowed declines over time, and some companies can sell excess ones to others, per Investopedia. The use of EVs means less reliance on dirty fuels and less stress on the environment. It matters as drilling for oil has created spills that have polluted oceans and destroyed marine life. It also leads to air pollution from vehicle emissions and factory operations. However, full electric vehicles don’t cause pollution that contributes to an increasingly hot planet — where such heat has been linked to more intense weather patterns, warmer waters affecting marine life, and world waterways like the Colorado River drying up, per CNN. 7. 5 New SUVs the Middle Class Should Consider Buying in 2025 5 New SUVs the Middle Class Should Consider Buying in 2025 Money is tight right now for most people, but particularly the middle class. As prices rise on everyday goods and services, it is becoming harder and harder to stretch a budget for the basics. Read Next: 4 SUVs That Will Have Massive Price Drops in Early 2025 Trending Now: 4 Low-Risk Ways To Build Your Savings in 2025 In 2025, things might take a turn for better or worse, though there are still some great options for this demographic to purchase a car next year, especially a sports utility vehicle (SUV). “Middle-class buyers searching for SUVs in 2025 should focus on vehicles that balance affordability, reliability and modern features,” stated Shawn Miller, the senior writer at Modified Rides. These are the five 2025 SUVs the middle class should consider buying. 2025 Hyundai Tucson Average starting MSRP: $28,000 The Tucson is an all-around performer, in Miller’s estimation, combining a roomy interior with top of the line fuel efficiency, and safety systems that are upgraded to the max. “Its hybrid option delivers impressive mileage, reducing fuel costs — a crucial factor for budget-conscious families,” Miller said. Check Out: 12 SUVs With the Most Reliable Engines 2025 Kia Sorento Average starting MSRP: $32,000 If you are in search of a spacious SUV that will fit the whole family with three-row seating, then look no further than the Kia Sorento. Being a hybrid variant, Miller highlighted that the Sorento saves on gas while still providing ample power. “Kia’s industry-leading warranty ensures long-term value, keeping repair expenses manageable,” commented Miller. This means that what a middle class family might see as a big expense upfront will pay off down the road with less trips to the mechanic. 2025 Toyota 4Runner Average starting MSRP: $40,000 This all-wheel-drive SUV accommodates up to eight passengers and is known for its top-notch safety ratings, according to John Yohana, the CEO of Blue Diamond Auto Glass. “It includes plenty of standard features, making it ideal for families looking for reliability, safety and practicality at a competitive price,” noted Yohana. “Toyota offers in-house finance options, which makes it accessible to more people.” 2025 Honda Passport Average starting MSRP: $40,000 According to Miller, the 2025 Model of the Passport blends rugged off-road capability with spacious comfort. “While priced slightly higher, its excellent resale value and reputation for longevity offset the initial investment,” Miller pointed out to middle class families who might only be looking to drive the Passport for a short ******* of time before upgrading. 2025 Mercedes GLC Average starting MSRP: $49,000 In Yohana’s professional opinion, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a great deal for middle class families looking for a “balance between affordability, practicality and premium features.” Those premium features on the Mercedes GLC include “a sleek design, a high-tech 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and advanced safety technologies such as lane-keeping assist and DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control,” as noted by Yohana. 11. Hostages freed from Gaza discover personal lives shattered by ****** Hostages freed from Gaza discover personal lives shattered by ****** RAMAT GAN, Israel (AP) — After 484 days of captivity in Gaza, Keith Siegel had many questions. Was his 97-year-old mother still alive? Which of his neighbors was killed in ******’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack? Why did it take so long to free him? With minimal access to media, the dual American-Israeli citizen only learned months after he was captured that his son had survived the attack that launched the war in Gaza. He had heard that his family and others’ were advocating for hostages’ freedom. But beyond that, he knew very little about life outside his confines in Gaza. “He really wanted to know everything as soon as possible, just to put all the question marks away and to know what happened,” said his daughter, Elan Siegel. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Hostages freed as part of a tenuous ceasefire in Gaza are confronting a flood of information about loved ones and destroyed communities, and are still figuring out their place in a changed world. Their families are grappling with how to fill them in on what they missed without potentially deepening their trauma. Experts say it is important to be cautious. “The information is definitely traumatic so you have to really be sensitive, careful and monitor the pace in which you expose the information,” said Einat Yehene, who heads the rehabilitation division at the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. Paraded by ******, then shattered by reality For many freed captives, catching up has been excruciating. Eli Sharabi, 52, had no exposure to media during his 16-month ordeal, according to his brother, Sharon Sharabi. Forced to speak at a staged ****** ceremony before his release, a gaunt Sharabi told a crowd of masked militants and journalists that he was looking forward to seeing his wife and two teenage daughters back in Israel. Then he learned the crushing reality shortly after his arrival in Israel: all three had been killed at home during the Oct. 7 attack. “Beyond the emotional burden and difficult experiences he faced in captivity, he had to bear this horrible loss on the first day that he left from there,” his brother told Israeli Army Radio. Or Levy, 34, was dealt a similar blow upon being freed. That is when he learned that his wife, Einav, was killed on Oct. 7. “For 491 days, he held onto hope that he would return to her,” his brother, Michael Levy, told reporters. Levy was reunited with his young son, who hit key developmental milestones, like being potty trained, while his father was in captivity. “It took you a long time to come back,” the 3-year-old told his father, according to Israeli media. Facing uncertainty even after being freed The first person Keith Siegel asked about upon returning home was his mother, Gladys. When his wife’s eyes welled up, he immediately understood she had died, his daughter recounted. Siegel picked up some information about his family while in captivity. Months into the war, he heard his daughter on the radio, speaking about how his son had survived ******’ attack. Other freed hostages have also reported hearing messages from their families through the news media. Yarden Bibas, who was freed earlier this month, was told by his captors that his wife, Shiri, and their two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, were dead. But he was also told they were spotted in Tel Aviv, according to Israeli media. Now that he is out, he still lacks clarity. They remain in Gaza, and the Israeli government has said it has “serious concern” for their lives. A relentless need to know more Beyond their personal lives, freed hostages are also taking in more than a year’s worth of world events: President Donald Trump is back in the White House; Israel and Iran engaged in their first direct attacks; Israel killed the longtime chief of the militant group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah. Keith Siegel’s family is sharing information sparingly, as one might with a child. “You answer only what he asks and not more than that,” his daughter, Elan, said. But the questions are relentless. Siegel wanted to know what happened to his community of Kfar Aza. Was anyone watering the plants? Who was killed in ******’ attack? “We asked him if he’s sure that he’s ready. And he said ‘yes,’ that he just wants to know. So I read him the list of 64 people” who were killed, his daughter said. She said his reaction to the news has been muted because “it’s almost like he forgot how to feel” while in captivity. Siegel’s photo has been a mainstay at protests and on banners highlighting the plight of hostages, making him recognizable across Israel. Ahead of his release, dozens of Israelis posted videos of themselves on social media making his favorite pancake recipe. Siegel’s wife, Aviva, who was freed from captivity in the early weeks of the war, prepared a book for him that includes notes from the important figures she had lobbied on his behalf — from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to former U.S. President Joe Biden. Siegel was especially befuddled by the revelation that world leaders knew about his captivity. His daughter, Elan, recalled him saying: “If they knew, how can it be that I was there for so long?” Source link #Hostages #freed #Gaza #discover #personal #lives #shattered #****** Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Dinosaur teeth found in French customs check near Italy border Dinosaur teeth found in French customs check near Italy border French customs Three of the teeth belonged to a Mosasaurus, a large aquatic reptile French customs officers have found nine dinosaur teeth during a routine check near the Italian border. The discovery was made as the officers inspected a Spanish lorry on the A8 motorway on 28 January, officials say. They spotted the apparent fossils in two parcels and sent them to be examined by a prehistory museum in the nearby city of Menton. On Friday, an expert revealed the teeth had belonged to reptiles from the Late Cretaceous ******* – 72 to 66 million years ago – in Morocco, authorities said. Lorries travelling on the A8 motorway between Spain and Italy are regularly stopped. Agents open parcels at random as they sometimes contain ******** drugs, customs Samantha Verduron told AFP news agency. But the latest haul was unexpected. Getty Images The Mosasaurus last roamed the seas around 66m years ago One of the teeth identified belonged to a Zarafasaura oceanis, a marine reptile measuring about 3m (10ft) and named in Morocco in 2011. Three belonged to a Mosasaurus, a large aquatic creature that measured up to 12m. Five other teeth are believed to have been those of a Dyrosaurus phosphaticus, a distant ancestor of crocodiles. The lorry driver told officers he had been delivering the parcels to people in the Italian cities of Genoa and Milan, French authorities said. Officials are working to identify the intended recipients of the packages. Collecting fossils is legal, but exporting them often requires a licence. 14. Anisimova beats Ostapenko to take Qatar Open crown Anisimova beats Ostapenko to take Qatar Open crown Amanda Anisimova has claimed her first WTA 1000 title by defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-3 in the final of the Qatar Open. Her win on Saturday will see the 23-year-old one-time American prodigy break into the top-20 for the first time in her career. Ranked 41 in the world, Anisimova also became the lowest-ranked player to win the tournament as she beat six top-40 opponents en route to her third singles title. The American was ranked as low as 359 in 2023 when she took a break from the game due to burnout as it took a toll on her mental health but she has been on the rise since her comeback and is set to move up to 18th in the rankings. Anisimova is only the second American to win the title, following in the footsteps of Monica Seles in 2002, while Ostapenko has now finished runner-up in Doha for a second time having also lost in the 2016 final. “There’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of tears and a lot of good moments,” Anisimova said. “With tennis you kind of experience it all but that’s also why I love it. There have been a lot of challenges the last few weeks. I’m very proud of myself and happy with how I’ve dealt with them.” After a spot of rain briefly paused play in the opening set, Anisimova broke first to lead 3-2 but that only fired up Ostapenko as she won nine straight points to go 4-3 up. But Anisimova regained her advantage, using her backhand to good effect and broke Ostapenko again before she served out the set as the Latvian dropped a set for the first time in the tournament. Ostapenko had the opportunity to go 2-0 up in the second but failed to convert break points and as she took out her frustrations at her team, Anisimova duly broke early to take a 2-1 lead and leave her opponent fuming during the changeover. Ostapenko then asked a member of her team to leave her box after which she won the next seven points but she lost her momentum after another rain delay which lasted 25 minutes as Anisimova went 5-3 up. With Ostapenko serving to stay in the match, Anisimova had two championship points and she sealed the title on her second with yet another devastating backhand, falling to the court and holding her face in disbelief. Ashley St. Clair, a 31-year-old MAGA writer, wrote in a post on X on Friday night that she and Musk share a five-month-old child. “Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world. Elon Musk is the father,” she wrote in the post. “I have not previously disclosed this to protect our child’s privacy and safety, but in recent days it has become clear that tabloid media intends to do so, regardless of the harm it will cause.” Conservative writer Ashley St. Clair claims she is the mother of Tesla/X/SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s 13th child (Getty/@stclairashley/X) St. Clair did not detail which media organization was seeking information on her and her child. News organizations typically will request comment from subjects prior to a story’s publication, which may explain how St. Clair learned that a story about her alleged child with Musk was in the works. “I intend to allow our child to grow in a normal and safe environment. For that reason, I ask that the media honor our child’s privacy, and refrain from invasive reporting,” St. Clair said in her post. St. Clair has not provided evidence that the child she shares with Musk exists. Musk has not commented on her claims at the time of this report. The Independent has requested comment from Musk. The writer isn’t the only Musk mother who wants privacy for her child; Grimes, a singer who shares three children with Musk, appeared dismayed when she learned that her ex was parading one of their children around in front of reporters inside the Oval Office. Earlier this week, Musk appeared at a press event in the Oval Office, swiping the spotlight from President Donald Trump to offer his opinions to reporters. During the event, Musk’s child, X Æ A-Xii, milled around the room. X’s mother, Grimes, learned about her son’s appearance on global media after an X user complimented her parenting. “He should not be in public like this,” Grimes wrote. “I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh.” The former couple have two other children together, who both have unusual names; Exa Dark Sideræl, 3, and Techno Mechanicus, 2. Musk has been a vocal proponent of human propagation. In 2023, he wrote that having “children should be incentivized.” “We must create the next generation of humans or spiral into oblivion,” Musk said. 18. Keely Klassic: Neil Gourley and Lina Nielsen break British records in Birmingham Keely Klassic: Neil Gourley and Lina Nielsen break British records in Birmingham Neil Gourley and Lina Nielsen both set new British indoor records at the Keely Klassic meeting in Birmingham. Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson had been due to go for the world indoor record before pulling out of the eponymous event with a hamstring injury. But the crowds were still treated to some high-quality performances as Nielsen shaved 0.24 seconds off Dina Asher-Smith’s women’s 300m record, winning in 36.53 seconds. And Gourley produced the fastest indoor 1,000m time by a British man, clocking two minutes 16.74 seconds – 0.46 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Charlie Grice in New York in 2020. It was not enough to clinch victory, though, with the Netherlands’ Samuel Chapple triumphing in 2:16.09. Georgia Bell, who won 1500m bronze at the Paris Olympics, narrowly missed out on a third British record of the afternoon, with her winning time of 4:00.63 just over a second outside Laura Muir’s national mark of 3:59.58. 19. The Chronicle of the Morea: Invaluable History of Medieval Greece The Chronicle of the Morea: Invaluable History of Medieval Greece Argyrokastro, or Silver Castle, where the Summer home of the Villehardouin knights who ruled the Morea during the medieval ******* once stood. Credit: angalexopoulos/CC BY-SA 3.0 The Chronicle of the Morea (Greek: Τὸ χρονικὸν τοῦ Μορέως) is the history of 14th-century Greece, specifically the Peloponnese—once called the Morea—through the eyes of the Franks who ruled it at the time. More than 9,000 lines long, the Chronicle narrates events of the Franks’ establishment of feudalism in mainland Greece after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204 following the Fourth Crusade. The Chronicle of Morea is the key source for the history of the Frankish states established in Greece after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204 and their relations with the reviving Byzantine Empire during the 13th century. “Fair Morea” was taken by Frankish knights returning from Fourth Crusade West European Crusaders settled in the Peloponnese (called Morea at the time) following the Fourth Crusade, in which Constantinople was sacked and taken. The ******* covered in the Chronicle was 1204 to 1292 (or later, depending on the version), and it contains invaluable details regarding life in the Principality of Achaia during the medieval *******. The author of the original text of the chronicle appears to be a Franc or a gasmoule (a French-Greek man), born from a mixed marriage between the two peoples. He appeared to admire the Franks (Crusaders) and have contempt for the local population and the Roman Empire. However, the author respects the citizenship of the Byzantine Greeks, calling them Romans (Ρωμαῖοι). In any event, his narrative forms an important part of Western history on Greece at the time, coloring the way Westerners saw the country for centuries. A 1964 translation of the Greek text by Harold E. Lurier begins with a prologue of 1302 verses. The first three verses are: “I will a tale to thee rehearse, a tale of import mighty, And if attention you do lend, I hope the tale will please you: Tis how the Frank by arms did gain the realm of fair Morea.” Despite being written down in the thirteenth century, the Chronicle of the Morea, along with the Ptochoprodromic poems and acritic songs, is considered as the beginnings of modern Greek literature. It is classified as part of both “Byzantine / medieval vernacular” and “(early) modern Greek” literature. Written in the spoken Greek language of the time, the Chronicle is an invaluable window into a world that is long-gone, but whose remnants we can still see today atop the hills of the Peloponnese, and in Achaia in particular. The Villehardouin knights who had fought in the Fourth Crusade, and sacked Constantinople, were prominent among the French noblemen who came to rule the area. The Morea in the year 1265, showing the possession of all the lands in and around what is now Greece. Credit: The Historical Atlas, William Robert Shepherd /Public Domain Chronicle of Morea is important linguistic text showing development of the Greek language The French text that is now in Brussels was written between 1331 and 1346 and is believed to be an abridgement of an earlier text, since the person who copied it states that he was transcribing parts of the Chronicle from an exemplar that belonged to Bartolommeo Ghisi, a castellan who lived near Thebes in the early fourteenth century. The text begins with a chronology that records the major events in the Byzantine world with a focus on the Peloponnese. Initial entries record the sack of Jerusalem by the armies of the First Crusade in 1099, and the last describes the conquest of several Frankish castles by Byzantine forces under Andronicus Asen in 1333. The narrator relates battles that took place during the Fourth Crusade, including the capture of Constantinople and the subsequent takeover of the Peloponnese (then called Achaia or Morea) by Frankish knights under William of Champlitte. His compatriot, the French knight Geoffrey of Villehardouin, the nephew of the famous chronicler of the taking of Constantinople, established a principality in the Achaia region. The Villehardouins resided in castles for generations; remains of one of his summer homes are seen in the photo above. The author pays particular attention to the establishment of the fiefs of the conquerors; following his narrative of the battles, he records names of each fief-holder in the newly-created Principality of Morea. Details of Byzantine and feudal life and arranged marriages all part of the Chronicle The Chronicle includes an epic recounting of the battle of Pelagonia in 1259, focusing on the heroic deeds of several French knights in spite of their eventual defeat by the Byzantine Army. Preserved in a unique fourteenth-century manuscript, the Old French version of the Chronicle of Morea is an invaluable contemporary account of Frankish feudal life. It serves not only as a history of the military clashes and conquests between the Franks and Byzantines; it includes background on their alliances and their arranged marriages as well. A rich historical treasure, written by an eyewitness to the turbulent events of the time, the Chronicle of Morea is full of anecdotes providing invaluable insights into the world of feudal justice and warfare, the role of noblewomen in feudal society, and the importance of chivalric ideals. Although the original has tragically been lost in the sands of time, four versions of the Chronicle are still extant: in French, Greek (in verse), Italian, and Aragonese; experts remain uncertain as to which version was the original, though it is known that the purported author was of French and Greek descent. The verses of the Greek text are written in the form of a 15-syllable political verse and, perhaps most remarkably, in the spoken Greek of the time with the inclusion of several French words. Two parallel Greek texts exist, as well as three copies: the Havniensis 57 manuscript from the 14th–15th century is in a library in Copenhagen; the Taurinensis B.II.I manuscript of the Chronicle is at the library in Turin; the Parisinus graecus manuscript, from the 15th–16th century, is in the holdings of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. The oldest text, in Copenhagen, contains more archaic language, while the Parisian, written approximately one hundred years afterward, has simpler language and fewer foreign words. Several anti-Greek references were omitted in the transcription, so the overall text expressed less contempt for the Greek people. Text from the Greek-language “Chronicle of the Morea.” Credit: Public Domain Changes that took place between versions show development of Greek language The changes that took place over the passage of one century between the Copenhagen and Parisian version of the story shows considerable linguistic variation over time due to the rapid evolution of the Greek language. The text of the Copenhagen version describes events that occurred in the Morea up to the year 1292. The French-language text, housed in the Royal Library of Belgium, is entitled: “The Book of the Conquest of Constantinople and the Empire of Roumania and the Country of the Principality of Morea.” Events up to the year 1304 are recorded in this particular version of the Chronicle. However, the much later Aragonese version of the Chronicle, “Libro de los fechos et conquistas del principado de la Morea,” was compiled at the end of the 14th century, in 1393, from the Greek version and other later sources at the request of the Grand Master Jean Fernandez de Heredia of the Knights of St. John. It covers events up until the end of that year, bringing those times well into the Middle Ages. The great historical significance of the Chronicle The Chronicle is well known and is an invaluable historical document, in spite of some undeniable historical inaccuracies, because of its lively description of life in the feudal community and because of the character of its language, which reflects the rapid transition from Medieval to Modern Greek. A number of administrative laws, political, and social practices of the Principality of Achaia are mentioned in the Chronicle, making it a significant source on the Frankish ******* in Greece. Since the author admired the Franks and apparently had contempt for the Byzantine culture, the Chronicle of Morea did not become part of popular or academic culture in Greece after the Franks left the Peloponnese. The first printed edition of the Chronicle, containing the Greek text from Paris, was published in 1840 by J.A. Buchon. It continues to serve as one of the great voices from that faraway time since it was written by the men who lived through these battles and created a feudal realm that lasted for centuries in what was to become modern Greece. 22. Trump tours a Boeing plane to spotlight delay on getting new Air Force One Trump tours a Boeing plane to spotlight delay on getting new Air Force One The motorcade of U.S. President Donald Trump is parked next to a 12-year-old Boeing 747-8 that Trump was touring in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Feb. 15, 2025. Kevin Lamarque | Reuters President Donald Trump toured a Boeing plane on Saturday to highlight delays in delivering new Air Force One aircraft, said the White House. The president negotiated with Boeing for a pair of new 747-8 aircraft during his first administration – between 2017 and 2021 – but the planes are now years behind schedule. The two aircraft were expected to be delivered in December 2024 but Boeing has pushed the arrival until at least 2027 or 2028 — towards the end of Trump’s second term in office. “President Trump is touring a new Boeing plane to check out the new hardware/technology,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said. “This highlights the project’s failure to deliver a new Air Force One on time as promised.” The aircraft the president visited at the Palm Beach International Airport is a 12-year-old plane formerly owned by Qatar’s royal family and is now operated by a company in the Isle of Man, according to two aviation websites. It was not immediately clear if Trump’s Saturday plane tour was coordinated with Boeing. Boeing had no immediate comment on Trump’s visit and referred questions on delays in the Air Force One program to the Air Force. Last month, Boeing’s CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company was meeting with Trump’s ally Elon Musk — despite Musk’s SpaceX competing with the Boeing space division — to get the plane updated quicker. “The president wants those planes sooner so we’re working with Elon to see what can we do to pull up the schedule of those programs,” Ortberg told CNBC on Jan. 28. Boeing leaders have said that production has been slowed by supply chain issues, high costs and the complexity of the planes that are intended to be an airborne White House. In 2016, Trump called out the high price tag for new Air Force One aircraft and demanded that the then-Boeing CEO agree to a contract of no more than $4 billion for the two planes. Since then, Boeing’s leadership has said the contract was priced too low for the planes equipped with military avionics, advanced communications, and a self-defense system to withstand worst-case security scenarios. Trump also proposed changing the look of the new Air Force One planes to incorporate a dark red color, but former President Joe Biden tweaked those plans back to resemble the current light blue model. However, the miniature Air Force One model atop Trump’s Inauguration Day cake on Jan. 20 featured the president’s preferred red-line design. Trials of Osiris Rework in Destiny 2 Episode Heresy Is Showering Everyone With Loot but the Experience May Have Taken a Hit Trials of Osiris Rework in Destiny 2 Episode Heresy Is Showering Everyone With Loot but the Experience May Have Taken a Hit If you want to experience a first-person shooter game that is also an MMO, then Destiny 2 is the perfect game for you. Destiny 2 is a free-to-play FPS game that was released back in 2017. The game was originally paid but later the developers, Bungie changed that and made the game free, and like its predecessor, Destiny 2 is divided into PvE and PvP at the same time. Destiny 2 is the best FPS MMORPG in the world | Image Credits: Bungie Destiny 2 incorporates a significant amount of PvP in their game and that is clearly visible with their Trials of Osiris game mode. It has received a complete overhaul in the game’s latest Episode: Heresy. Let’s delve deeper and find out what changes have been made and how is it affecting the players. Destiny 2’s new episode revamps Trials of Osiris Trials of Osiris have tweaked the loot drops | Image Credits: Bungie Trials of Osiris is a PvP (Player versus Player) game mode where players would form two teams of three players and have a duel against each other. It is the pinnacle of Destiny 2 multiplayer and is only available on weekends. The trials give players the chance to show off their PvP skills so they can obtain some of Destiny’s most exclusive weapons and armor. Trials of Osiris only attracted higher-level players, given the fact that lower-level players would instantly get crushed in it which made Bungie incorporate several changes in the game mode. The trials span all the way back to Destiny 1 and have had a lot of tweaks throughout the years to give players of all levels an equal chance to win. As of the latest episode, Episode: Heresy, the trials have significantly increased their loot drop rates, and trios are now guaranteed an Adept weapon upon winning seven times, regardless of whether it is consecutive or not. In previous updates, after winning consecutively players would get a chance to enter the Lighthouse where they can receive exclusive loot like Adept weapons and mods, Trials Memento, Enhancement Prisms, and much more. With the revamped Trials of Osiris, a lot of new players who previously would not have engaged with the multiplayer aspect of the game at all, have given PvP a chance and they are fairly enjoying it as well. Although the new players are getting thrashed, they are getting significantly better loot now. Trials of Osiris now drop better loot, no matter how bad the players are Bungie has resurrected the PvP aspect of the game with the new update | Image Credits: Bungie Trials of Osiris has some of the best loot drops in the entire game. It has a unique set of weapons, armor sets, shaders, and other cool cosmetics. The new update finally gave a chance to a lot of players to get into the Destiny 2 PvP game mode and get a taste of better loot in the title. Even solo players who enjoy PvE and have avoided PvP entirely for the past few seasons can hold their ground in the trials now. With Destiny 2’s player count hitting an all-time low, Bungie has successfully revitalized the PvP aspect of the game with their update. By increasing the loot drop rates and easing the path to Adept weapons, Bungie has made this challenging game mode more accessible without compromising its competitive spirit.
