  1. ***’s Royal Society to discuss fellows’ behaviours amid Musk controversy ***’s Royal Society to discuss fellows’ behaviours amid Musk controversy LONDON (Reuters) – The Royal Society scientific academy said it would hold a meeting to discuss principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of its fellows after thousands of scientists expressed their concerns over Elon Musk’s continued membership. Britain’s Royal Society began in 1660 and is the oldest national scientific academy. Its fellows have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Musk was elected as a fellow in 2018 for his technological achievements in space travel and electric vehicles. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. More than 2,000 scientists have now signed an open letter, written by structural biologist Stephen Curry, expressing dismay at what they described as “continued silence and apparent inaction” from the Royal Society over Musk’s fellowship. They claim Musk’s behaviour, such as embracing conspiracy theories, breach the Royal Society’s code of conduct. “The situation is rendered more serious because Mr Musk now occupies a position within a (Donald) Trump administration in the USA that has over the past several weeks engaged in an assault on scientific research,” the letter said. The Telegraph newspaper said on Saturday the Royal Society had summoned its fellows to a meeting next month to vote on expelling Musk. Asked about the Telegraph’s report, a spokesperson for the Royal Society said in a statement it was “holding a meeting of the fellows to discuss the principles around public pronouncements and behaviours of fellows”. The meeting will be take place on March 3. “Any issues raised in respect of individual fellows are dealt with in strict confidence,” the spokesperson added, without naming Musk. The device interfered with police equipment, preventing officers from using body cameras, key fobs, and radios during an emergency response. Experts suggest that the use of such a device indicates tactical knowledge, posing a potential threat to law enforcement and public safety. HOUSTON, Texas – Ignacio Castillo Contreras was arrested for burglary, but it’s what he had in his backpack that’s causing concern. Contreras arrested for burglary in Houston The backstory During his probable cause hearing, Contreras told the court he’s not a U.S. citizen and has been in Houston just a couple of months and is living at a hotel. He was arrested on February 8th for burglary. West University Place Police say when he broke into a home in the 6400 block of Westchester they found a radio frequency jamming device in his backpack. Discovery of radio frequency jamming device raises concerns “A radio frequency tracking device sends a lot of signals very high intense signals around you,” said tech expert Juan Guevara Torres. “It blocks signals from going to point A to point B.” According to court documents, officers within the vicinity of the device were unable to properly use their body-worn cameras and key fobs to lock and unlock police vehicles and were unable to transmit information through police issued hand held radio devices during an active emergency. Expert insights on the tactical use of jamming devices Why you should care “The fact that this defendant was able to jam up the local police officers who were responding to the calls their radios key fobs getting into their car and body cams makes it a dangerous situation for law enforcement,” said former DA Kim Ogg. “In my opinion, as a tech expert, I can tell you that whoever did this has some tactical knowledge on how to use this device and where to place them,” Torres said. Remember Contreras told the court he’s not a U.S. citizen, and he’s only been in Houston a couple of months staying at a hotel. “If you imagine an ordinary criminal committing a crime with a radio frequency jamming device, now add to that someone with real bad intent who wants to harm a lot of people like a terrorist, a mass *********, and it gets scary quick,” said Ogg. (WFLA) — A cruise ship carrying 169 passengers and crew members sick with norovirus docked in Florida on Friday. The Holland America Rotterdam docked in Port Everglades after a nearly two-week journey through the Caribbean and central America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began monitoring a norovirus outbreak on the ship on Feb. 7. The CDC report states 152 out of 2,614 passengers, or 5.8%, were sick. The illness affected 17 of 969 crew members, or 1.8%. Those affected by the illness reported experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, which was determined to be caused by norovirus. The Rotterdam outbreak is the fourth norovirus outbreak reported to the CDC this year. This comes days after a ship returned to Tampa with 168 sickened passengers and crew members. Those aboard Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas also reported experiencing diarrhea and vomiting, but the source of the illness is unknown, according to the CDC. 10. Olympian Raygun takes tumble during impromptu breaking performance on stage at Sydney nightclub Olympian Raygun takes tumble during impromptu breaking performance on stage at Sydney nightclub Just when she had been laying low, Raygun has fallen into the news again — quite literally. Olympic breaker Rachael Gunn experienced a whirlwind six months in the wake of her infamous performance at Paris 2024, initially becoming the subject of intense scrutiny and ridicule, before later winning over the love of the world. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Raygun has taken a tumble onstage at a Sydney nightclub. She may not have scored a single point in any of her breaking battles at the Olympics, but Raygun came out the real winner as a result of her disastrous performance, with brands, sponsors and lucrative opportunities all coming her way thereafter. But she had been keeping a low profile in recent months, having not posted a thing on her Instagram since early December. The 37-year-old has been thrust back into the spotlight though, with vision of her taking a tumble onstage at a Sydney nightclub going viral. In the video, Raygun appears to be putting on an impromptu breaking performance at a drag show, during which she loses her balance and falls onto the edge of the stage. She quickly got up and seemed OK, but the tumble did nothing to help her reputation as a dancer. Camera IconRaygun has taken a tumble on stage. Credit: Instagram It’s the first time we’ve seen or heard from Raygun since her lawyers stepped in to cancel a musical set to be based on her Olympics performance. Raygun: The Musical was set to debut in Sydney on December 7, but on the morning of the show, Rachael Gunn’s lawyers stepped in and threatened legal action. The parody musical, written and starring Aussie comedian Steph Broadbridge, intended to retell the story of Raygun’s Olympic journey, which spawned countless imitations on social media. Raygun and Broadbridge came to an agreement where the show will go on under the new name of Breaking The Musical, but there was a storm over a proposed $10,000 demand. Anthony Skinner, owner of iD Comedy Club in Darlinghurst, where the show was set to run, leaked the terms of the legal letter he received. “You will reimburse our client with legal costs to date which we estimate to be $10,000,” the letter said, as well as demanding that the show be cancelled and proof of evidence that the show had been cancelled. Skinner couldn’t believe his eyes when he received the $10,000 letter. However, Raygun said she and her team are not seeking any money and that was only for any potential court costs. Camera IconRaygun issued a lengthy video statement following legal drama surrounding a planned parody musical based on her. Credit: Instagram “Hi everyone, it’s been a big couple of weeks,” she began in a lengthy video post on Instagram. “I’m not going to lie, it’s been a wild ride but I’m really pleased to say we’ve resolved everything. “My team’s been working with Steph’s team, and we’ve managed to come to an agreement and resolved everything. “She still gets to go ahead with the musical, she’s got a new name, new poster, and she still gets to take that show on the road. So I’m really happy for her and I wish her all the best with the show and with the tour. “We have not sought any costs from all this. So there’s a lot of talk around this $10,000 … that was from really early on, like day one, my lawyers were acting on my behalf. “They sent out letters, and you know, they asked for a response … by a certain time, they didn’t hear a response. And you know, we were worried that we might have to go to court. “Obviously, no one wants that, and so the $10k was would just be my potential legal costs if we had to go to court. But fortunately, we didn’t. “We’re not seeking any costs, I’ve said before it’s not about the money, and it is still not about the money. We’ve got no costs from them, not from Steph, not from the comedy club. “In our view, it’s all resolved. It’s not going to be any more legal proceedings from us. It’s an intellectual property issue, and now we have put it to bed.” Source link #Olympian #Raygun #takes #tumble #impromptu #breaking #performance #stage #Sydney #nightclub Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. Zelensky calls for ‘armed forces of Europe’ amid altered EU-US ties Zelensky calls for ‘armed forces of Europe’ amid altered EU-US ties Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the creation of an “armed forces of Europe” as he addressed the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, pointing to the altered relationship with Washington under President Donald Trump. Zelensky urged Europe to shape its own future in view of the threat emanating from Russia alongside Washington’s weakening commitment to the continent’s security. “The time has come, the armed forces of Europe must be created,” he said. Such troops should not replace NATO, but level European defence contributions with those made by the United States, he said. “Yesterday here in Munich, the US vice president made it clear. Decades, he said, decades of the old relationship between Europe and America are ending,” Zelensky said, referring to US Vice President JD Vance who addressed the gathering on Friday. “From now on, things will be different, and Europe needs to adjust to that,” he said, noting Trump would reduce spending on European defence. “Europe needs a single voice, not a dozen different ones,” Zelensky said. “Some in Europe may be frustrated with Brussels,” he said. “But let’s be clear: if not Brussels, then Moscow.” Zelensky also urged Europe to cooperate with Washington, saying otherwise, Moscow would take advantage of any divisions and tear Europe apart. Belarus warning Zelensky also warned that Russia may be preparing for further military escalation, with Ukrainian intelligence suggesting that Moscow is looking to move troops to allied Belarus this summer. Russia is also building up of its armed forces further and is recruiting additional soldiers, he said. The deployment in Belarus would be declared a military exercise, Zelensky said, adding this was how the Russian invasion of Ukraine began almost three years ago. Belarus later denied it plans to rearm and attack its neighbours. “We do not pose a threat to anyone, we are not increasing the number of troops or weapons systems – unlike our neighbours, the Poles and the Baltics, who are focusing on militarization,” said the politically influential Secretary of the National Security Council in Belarus, Alexander Wolfovich. No exercises are planned near the border with the NATO states this year, Wolfovich said, in order to avoid provocation. Peace talks Regarding negotiations to an end of the war in Ukraine, Zelensky called for the participation of European states, not just Russia and the US. His comments come after Trump and Putin spoke by phone on Wednesday and agreed to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine “immediately,” raising alarm among Ukraine and its European partners over potentially being bypassed in peace talks. Raw materials for support? Later, Zelensky said he would renegotiate a treaty with the US on the extraction of raw materials, saying he had not agreed to sign the agreement as it was not yet finalized at a press conference. The contract should not just be about mineral resources, but should also include security guarantees, said Zelensky said, adding he had not seen that so far. He said the agreement was signed at ministerial level but as president he would have influence over its content. US President Donald Trump has said several times that Washington seeks access rights to Ukraine’s vast deposits of rare earth minerals and other natural resources, saying the US should receive something in exchange for its military support. Zelensky thanks Berlin Zelensky also thanked Germany for its backing though he did not say whether he is hoping to receive Taurus cruise missiles under a new chancellor after the ******* elections. Conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz has said he would have supplied the missiles that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far refused to give to Kiev. Germany is the second largest supporter of Ukraine after the US. Zelensky underlined that further aid should not depend on who is in government in the US, amid fears that support could be scaled back under US President Donald Trump. Earlier, Scholz insisted that negotiations with Russia must respect Ukraine’s “sovereign independence.” The ******* leader made it clear that Ukraine must be enabled to effectively defend itself with substantial military aid in a peace settlement, as he addressed world leaders and foreign policy experts on the second day of the high-profile gathering in Munich. “Ukraine must have armed forces at the end of any negotiated solution that can repel any renewed Russian attack. Financially, materially, and logistically, this will be an enormous challenge,” Scholz said. The ******* chancellor emphasized that European and trans-Atlantic partners will continue to be needed for this effort, warning a victory for Russia or the collapse of Ukraine would not create peace. Scholz rival also demands European involvement Friedrich Merz, the conservative front-runner in next weekend’s ******* elections, also said Europe must be involved in negotiations to end the Ukraine war. “It’s absolutely unacceptable that Russia and the United States of America are negotiating without Ukraine and without the Europeans at the table,” he said. Of Kiev’s hopes to join NATO, Merz said this is a joint question for the defence alliance. Trump team to start Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia Trump team to start Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomes U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as he arrives in Israel, on the first leg of his Middle East trip, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Feb. 15, 2025. Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters Senior officials from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration will start peace talks with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia in the coming days, according to a U.S. lawmaker and a source familiar with the planning. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. national security adviser Mike Waltz and White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Saudi Arabia, U.S. Representative Michael McCaul told Reuters in Munich. A source with knowledge of the plans confirmed the talks. Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine in February 2022. Russia occupies around a fifth of Ukraine and has demanded Kyiv cede territory and become permanently neutral under any peace deal. Ukraine demands Russia withdraw from captured land and wants NATO membership or equivalent security guarantees to prevent Moscow from attacking again. Rubio held a phone call on Saturday with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, and discussed the conflict in Ukraine, both parties said. They agreed on regular contacts to prepare for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said. McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said it was his understanding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been invited to participate in the Saudi talks. McCaul said the talks were aimed at arranging a meeting with Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy “to finally bring peace and end this conflict.” When asked about the planned meeting between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, Zelenskyy — in Germany for the Munich Security Conference — told reporters: “Maybe there is something (on) the table, but not on our table. I didn’t see any invitations … (for) Ukraine to meet with some other envoys.” He said it would be strange for him to speak with U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia “if before we (haven’t) had any negotiation between us and our strategic partners. As I remember, Russia is not our strategic partner.” Zelenskyy said on Friday he would visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, but did not say when. However, the Ukrainian leader said he had no plans to meet with U.S. or Russian officials during those visits. Zelenskyy said earlier on Saturday that Ukraine would never accept any peace deals reached behind its back or without Kyiv’s involvement. Ukraine has repeatedly said it wants to come together with the United States and Europe to devise a joint strategy before any Trump-Putin meeting. Trump’s unilateral overture to Putin on Wednesday, accompanied by apparent concessions on Ukraine’s principal demands, raised alarm for both Kyiv and the European allies in NATO who said they feared the White House might make a deal without them. European officials took an exceptionally firm line, saying any agreement would be impossible to implement unless they and the Ukrainians were included in negotiating it. Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, said Ukraine would have a seat at the table during any peace negotiations with Russia over ending the war. Negotiations on a critical minerals deal continued, with Zelenskyy saying a draft from Washington did not contain the security provisions that Kyiv needed. 16. Inter look on as Serie A title-chasing hopefuls slip up Inter look on as Serie A title-chasing hopefuls slip up Leaders Napoli have drawn for the third Serie A game in a row, held in the Italian capital by Lazio. Keen to get back to winning ways after the spoils were shared against Roma and Udinese, it looked like they were on the right path when Antonio Conte’s side fought back to lead 2-1 in the 64th minute following a comical own goal. Matteo Politano whipped in a cross from the right and Giacomo Raspadori’s shot went in off Lazio defender Mario *****’s bottom and teammate Adam Marusic. The home side snatched a point three minutes from time when Boulaye Dia combined with Zaccagni on the right and cut inside to fire into the far bottom corner. Gustav Isaksen gave Lazio the lead in the sixth minute with a powerful strike from 30 yards but it was cancelled out by Raspadori seven minutes later. Atalanta are losing hope of silverware match by match, following up Wednesday’s disappointing — and controversial — defeat at Club Brugge in the Champions League with a goalless draw at home to relegation-threatened Cagliari. The Bergamo club remain five points behind Napoli (56) in third. Atalanta, who have won just one of their past six matches in all competitions, thought they had broken the deadlock on the hour but Marco Brescianini’s effort was ruled out for a foul by Stefan Posch on Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile. The hosts finished the match strongly and Caprile had to make a number of important saves. Cagliari inched to 13th, five points above the relegation zone. Elsewhere, Santiago Gimenez is proving well worth the 30 million euros ($A50 million) AC Milan paid Feyenoord for him. The Mexico forward netted his second goal in as many league matches — and his first at San Siro — to help Milan beat Hellas Verona 1-0. Milan are seventh, five points behind Lazio (46), while Verona sit three points above the drop zone in 15th. Inter Milan can go top with a win at bitter rivals Juventus on Sunday. 17. Trump suggests he’s above the law with ominous Napoleon quote Trump suggests he’s above the law with ominous Napoleon quote Donald Trump appeared to quote Napoleon Bonaparte by way of Rod Steiger on Saturday afternoon after his blitzkrieg of executive actions and threats to federal agencies under Elon Musk were challenged in courts across the country, raising alarms that his administration is preparing to shred court orders and ignite a constitutional crisis. “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” the president wrote on Truth Social and X. The president — whose efforts to gut federal funding, fire thousands of aid workers and unilaterally redefine the 14th Amendment were blocked in federal courts across the country in recent days — invoked a quote often attributed to Napoleon, who justified his despotic regime as the will of the people of France. The quote from a president with his own imperial ambitions appeared to come from the 1970 film Waterloo, in which Steiger’s Napoleon states that he “did not ‘usurp’ the crown.” “I found it in the gutter, and I picked it up with my sword, and it was the people … who put it on my head,” he says. “He who saves a nation violates no law.” Within his first month in office, Trump’s allies have baselessly argued Trump’s supreme authority as president, immune from checks and balances, as his executive orders and Musk’s access to the levers of government face an avalanche of lawsuits and restraining orders. Musk and other members of the Trump administration have smeared the judges who have ruled against them as “corrupt” and “evil” and threatened to impeach and remove them from the bench. The world’s wealthiest man and his allies have repeated false and inflated claims about how the three branches of government operate, and how a system of checks and balances is designed to prevent the presidency from accumulating supreme authority. Their comments are raising alarms among constitutional scholars and legal analysts for an impending constitutional crisis — which the White House blames on the judges, not the president’s spurious legal actions and the administration’s baseless insistence that he should not be subject to checks and balances in the courts. Elon Musk’s ongoing campaign against judges overseeing lawsuits against Donald Trump’s administration has alarmed constitutional scholars and legal experts (AFP via Getty Images) Trump, now seemingly invoking his own “l’etat, c’est moi” maxim, routinely conflated the criminal and civil cases against him with an attack on the American people and rule of law itself during his campaign. The Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling affirming a president’s “immunity” from criminal prosecution for actions tied to official duties while in office has only fueled what he perceives is a permanent shield from oversight. The New York Times’s Jamelle Bouie called Trump’s latest statement “the single most un-American and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an American president.” “We’re getting into real Führerprinzip territory here,” added conservative Trump critic Bill Kristol, referencing executive authority under Nazi Germany, granting the word of the führer above all. Musk’s ongoing campaign to delegitimize the courts followed Vice President JD Vance’s claim that “judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.” This week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused the “media” of “fear mongering” about an impending constitutional crisis. “The real constitutional crisis is taking place within our judicial branch where district court judges in liberal districts are abusing their power,” she told reporters on Wednesday. She falsely claimed that court-ordered injunctions against the administration have “no basis in the law.” “We will comply with these orders but it is also the administration’s position that we will ultimately be vindicated,” she said. 19. Liam Wright confident of regaining Wallabies spot after untimely shoulder injury Liam Wright confident of regaining Wallabies spot after untimely shoulder injury Having earnt not only a Wallabies recall but the national team captaincy, Liam Wright wasn’t ready for the devastation of a shoulder injury that ended his 2024 campaign less than an hour into his first Test in four years. Wright’s bad luck with injuries seemed to have ended when after playing a full Super Rugby Pacific season for the Queensland Reds, he had the honour of becoming the Wallabies 89th Test skipper in his first Test since 2020. However, 57 minutes into Australia’s 25-16 July 6 win over Wales in Sydney, Wright was forced off after injuring his shoulder, and hasn’t played since. “It’s such a weird one because if someone had told me this time last year that I was going to play a full Super Rugby season for the first time in however long and I was going to get to captain my country, I would have said `sweet I’ll take that, no problems, that’s an awesome year’,” Wright said. “Then as soon as you get there, the goalposts shift. It hurt probably a bit more last year because you finally get that sniff, and think you’re good enough to be there, and then the opportunity to captain my country as well was really cool, so it’s a cruel one that it gets taken away like that. “It gets harder the more it happens with injuries. When you first have an injury or the first couple, you think ‘this is just how it works’, and then the more you do it, the more you miss out, the more you want to get back, and the more you see guys moving and training, and the team growing, you want go with it.” Wright seems unlikely to make his comeback in the Reds’ first game of their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign on Friday night against Moana Pasifika at Suncorp Stadium, with Queensland’s back-row depth ensuring there is no need to gamble on the fitness of the 27-year-old flanker. Camera IconLiam Wright (left) and Tate McDermott will again co-captain the Queensland Reds this year. Supplied Credit: Supplied However, Wright isn’t far away from a return, having travelled with the Reds to the United Kingdom for their recent pre-season tour. And the Reds co-captain didn’t play against Bristol or Ulster, his training input increased. “It’s a matter of not getting too greedy and making sure that we go through the right process and we don’t end up back at square one,” Wright said. “I’ve got good people in my corner that are keeping me patient … but I’m looking forward to 2025 because I think our team’s growing, we’re trying to evolve areas of our game, and I feel like I can complement that. “Nothing really changes from last year to this year in terms of if I can get a good Super Rugby season in and my body stays healthy, I feel I can play myself into that Wallabies squad and then from there it’s just doing all you can to earn selection.” Source link #Liam #Wright #confident #regaining #Wallabies #spot #untimely #shoulder #injury Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  20. Vance cozies up to Germany’s far-right, scolds E.U. leaders for not engaging with extremists Vance cozies up to Germany’s far-right, scolds E.U. leaders for not engaging with extremists Vice President JD Vance has taken his tacit support for Germany’s far-right political party up another troubling notch. On Friday, he met with a leader of the extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Munich — but not before scolding European leaders for what he characterized as an intolerance for differing viewpoints. Vance, who was on his first international trip as vice president this week, declined a meeting with ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz and instead privately met with Alice Weidel, the co-leader of AfD, his office confirmed. Late last year, Scholz intentionally failed a vote of no-confidence in the ******* parliament, forcing a snap election to be held later this month. Weidel, as the AfD’s candidate for chancellor, seems poised to help shape whatever coalition winds up being formed out of the results. Vance’s meeting with Weidel came one day after he chastised European leaders at the Munich Security Conference for shunning far-right parties in their countries, effectively keeping them from gaining too much power behind a political firewall. Vance singled out ******* leaders for refusing to engage with the AfD, and said that restrictions on free speech were a ******* threat to the continent than Russian or ******** actions. “To many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion, or, God forbid, vote a different way — or even worse, win an election,” Vance said. The vice president, who has infamously mocked a subset of women voters in the U.S., went on to say that a democracy could not survive by dismissing voters’ concerns as “invalid or unworthy of even being considered.” “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you, nor for that matter is there anything you can do for the American people,” he said. Vance’s speech, The New York Times reported, was met with stunned silence from the attendees. Yet as Vance scolded European leaders for stifling free speech and not engaging with “alternative viewpoints,” the Trump administration has continued to rapidly institute changes across the federal government that critics say undermine free expression and punish those whose views it disagrees with. Those moves include removing references to trans and nonbinary people across government agencies; eliminating federal diversity programs; threatening to deport students who protested Israel’s assault on Gaza; banning books in schools that serve military families; and directing the Federal Communications Commission to revive complaints against media outlets that don’t report on the president favorably. 22. Swanbourne suburb profile: What are its unique selling points and is it a good place to live? Swanbourne suburb profile: What are its unique selling points and is it a good place to live? LIVING IN: Swanbourne Population: 4592 Distance from Perth CBD: 10km south-west Median House Price: $2.85 million Median Unit Price: $860,000 Crime: 17 offences (2024) This beachside locality is smaller and quieter than its affluent neighbour, Cottesloe, but it’s just as popular, with a community feel and one of Perth’s top private schools on its doorstep. Swanbourne is a prosperous suburb hailed by local real estate agents for its “easy living”, parklands and beautiful beach. Renouf Real Estate principal Jayson Renouf said the suburb has “community spirit like few others”. Homes range from tastefully restored Federation beauties on big blocks, to elegant new and recent-builds that give the area a distinct and sophisticated charm. “Homes in Swanbourne are well-maintained and have a complementary effect on the streetscape,” Mr Renouf said. “There is a high level of presentation, and many heritage and older homes in the area are essentially unchanged, while the suburb has modernised in certain ways so it maintains that connection to its heritage.” Camera IconThe suburb’s major attractions include Swanbourne Beach. Credit: Daniel Wilkins/The West *********** The 3.6sqkm suburb is bound by Stirling Road to the east, the Fremantle railway line to the south and the Indian Ocean to the west. Residents enjoy all the conveniences of near-city living while being removed from hustle and bustle. “Swanbourne locals have a big advantage because you can slip into town the back way and avoid the bottlenecks along Stirling Highway, which is a huge time saver,” Mr Renouf said. The suburb’s major attractions include Swanbourne Beach and the Cottesloe Golf Course. It is also home to the serene and well-kept Allen Park, with its playground and playing fields that host sport year-round. Facilities including tennis courts, and cricket and a rugby pitches. The relocated Tom Collins House — a small timber worker’s cottage built in 1908 and lived in by poet and author of the novel Such is Life, Joseph Furphy, who wrote under the pen-name of Tom Collins — is also there. And just metres away is the Kirkwood Continental Deli, which has become a popular coffee spot for locals. The Yargine walking track around Lake Claremont also takes in parts of Swanbourne and is always popular. Cresswell Park is another popular green space used predominantly as a sporting ground. Camera IconCottesloe Golf Club is another major attraction. Credit: Daniel Wilkins/The West *********** Swanbourne was initially named Osborne. The renaming was deemed necessary in 1921 after the suburb was confused with Osborne Park, leading to a tragic death after an ambulance was sent to the wrong location. The name comes from the Swanbourne House in Buckinghamshire, England, which was owned by Sir Thomas Fremantle, who was a prominent politician in Swanbourne. Swanbourne is home to one of two nudist beaches in the Perth metropolitan area, this one situated on army land that is not subject to local council authority. The beach is north of Swanbourne Beach. Swanbourne is serviced by the Swanbourne railway station and various bus routes, with West Coast Highway particularly well serviced. And it is a lack of busy major roads that Mr Renouf believes separates the suburb from its neighbours. “There is not a lot of difference between Cottesloe and Swanbourne, but one distinct difference is the evenness of the suburb,” he said. Camera IconThe Shorehouse. Credit: Daniel Wilkins/The West *********** “It is all single residential housing, it’s very low density. There is not a lot of high-rise buildings or main roads.” Mr Renouf said among the wide choice of eateries on locals’ doorsteps were Vinotto wine bar, Upperhand Burgers and the North Street Store. Swanbourne is also popular with families — 80 per cent of homes are occupied by them, perhaps no surprise given its proximity to top-quality schools, including Scotch College and the nearby Christ Church Grammar, Methodist Ladies’ College and Shenton College. Mr Renouf said these schools, alongside the beach, were the strongest drivers of property sales in the area. Stand-alone houses make up 81.3 per cent of the suburb’s housing stock, and apartments 11.1 per cent. Units take longer to sell than houses, with Real Estate Institute of WA statistics showing they remain on the market for an average 46 days, or nearly seven weeks, while houses last just 19 days. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] As reported on News Center 7 at 6, the summit runs from May 22-26, and businesses inside the area that will be shut down said they still don’t have a lot of information. “That’s probably going to hurt if they’re not allowed to get in here,” Tony Gracie, owner of Flying Pizza said. Gracie said even with the confusion, he knows one thing for certain. “We’re going to be open … we’re not closed. We’re going to be here serving the public, whether it’s business owners, whether it’s the NATO members,” he said. Other businesses said they weren’t so certain. Owners of six restaurants in the area told News Center 7 they didn’t know enough about their options and weren’t comfortable commenting. An email sent from the Downtown Dayton Partnership to area businesses says anyone coming into the perimeter will need valid passes from the Dayton Police Department and no vehicles will be allowed inside. It adds the department will be in contact with affected businesses. Gracie said he may make some changes for the summit, including expanding his delivery area. Business and apartment owners said there would be a meeting with the police department to go over more information. We will continue to follow this story. Jacob Elordi’s drastic weight-loss for Aussie POW drama Jacob Elordi’s drastic weight-loss for Aussie POW drama *********** actor Jacob Elordi says the drastic weight loss he endured for his role in the new prisoner-of-war drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North was made bearable by support from the rest of the cast. “It was a very calming experience to do it with all the lads,” he told journalists on Saturday at the Berlin Film Festival, where the *********** TV series is screening out of competition. “There was something quite profound that happened in that it wasn’t a complete torture,” in part because it brought him and his co-stars closer together. Elordi, 27, is best known for his role as a high school football player Nate Jacobs in HBO’s edgy teen drama series Euphoria, also played Elvis Presley in the film Priscilla and a wealthy university student in Saltburn, which saw him nominated for a BAFTA. Elordi stars as the young medical officer Dorrigo Evans in the TV series adaptation of the 2014 Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan. The epic *********** drama set after World War II, spans several periods in Evans’ life, including an affair with his uncle’s wife in 1940, his time in a Japanese POW camp in 1943 and his later success as a surgeon in 1989.
