  1. Gyokeres stars for Sweden in Nations League win Gyokeres stars for Sweden in Nations League win Viktor Gyokeres has led Sweden to a 2-1 win over Slovakia while the Netherlands qualified for the Nations League quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over Hungary on Saturday. Germany also set a single-game scoring record for the relatively new competition – this is its fourth edition – by routing Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0. Gyokeres took his nation’s opening goal in the third minute. After Slovakia’s David Hancko levelled in the 19th, the Sporting Lisbon striker set up Aleksander Isak to put Sweden back in front for good in the 31st. Gyokeres is the ******-leading scorer of the Nations League with five along with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko. He recently upstaged Erling Haaland by scoring a hat-trick as Sporting beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League. Sweden are trying to earn promotion from League C to League B. Estonia finished 0-0 at Azerbaijan in the same group. The Netherlands joined Germany as the two teams from League A, Group 3 to advance to the quarter-finals in March. The Dutch easily won their game in Amsterdam, which was briefly suspended in the first half for the medical evacuation of Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai. The Hungarian Football Federation said the former player was in “stable” condition after being taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Wout Weghorst converted a penalty in the 21st and Cody Gapko added a second spot kick in first-half injury time. Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners added second-half goals. Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz scored twice, including from a superb free kick, to help fuel the Germans’ demolition of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Forward Tim Kleindienst also got his first two international goals, while Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz and Leroy Sane all added to the lopsided scoreline in Freiburg. Wales escaped with a scoreless draw from Turkey after the host’s top scorer Kerem Akturkoglu missed an 89th-minute penalty. Akturkoglu, who leads Turkey with four goals in the Nations League, sent his spot kick off the post. Iceland won at Montenegro 2-0 after late goals by Orri Oskarsson and Isak Bergmann. The loss meant Montenegro will be relegated to League C. A goal by Georges Mikautadze got Georgia a 1-1 draw at home with Ukraine after an own goal by Solomon Kverkvelia put the visitors ahead. The Czech Republic missed the chance to earn promotion from League B after drawing at Albania 0-0. In League D, Virgiliu Postolachi scored in injury time to give Moldova a 1-0 win in Andorra. 3. Boeing issues layoff notices to 400-plus workers as it begins drastic cuts Boeing issues layoff notices to 400-plus workers as it begins drastic cuts SEATTLE (AP) — Boeing has delivered layoff notices to more than 400 members of its professional aerospace labor union, part of thousands of cuts planned as the company struggles to recover from financial and regulatory trouble as well as an eight-week strike by its machinists’ union. The pink slips went out last week to members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, The Seattle Times reported. The workers will remain on the payroll through mid-January. Boeing announced in October that it planned to cut 10% of its workforce, about 17,000 jobs, in the coming months. CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees the company must “reset its workforce levels to align with our financial reality.” The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, union said the cuts had affected 438 members. The union’s local chapter has 17,000 Boeing employees who are largely based in Washington, with some in Oregon, California and Utah. Of those 438 workers, 218 are members of SPEEA’s professional unit, which includes engineers and scientists. The rest are members of the technical unit, which includes analysts, planners, technicians and skilled tradespeople. Eligible employees will receive career transition services and subsidized health care benefits for up to three months. Workers will also receive severance, typically about one week of pay for every year of service. Boeing’s unionized Machinists began returning to work earlier this month following the strike. The strike strained Boeing’s finances. But Ortberg said on an October call with analysts that it did not cause the layoffs, which he described as a result of overstaffing. Boeing, based in Arlington, Virginia, has been in financial and regulatory trouble since a panel blew off the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines plane in January. Production rates slowed to a crawl, and the Federal Aviation Administration capped production of the 737 MAX at 38 planes per month, a threshold Boeing has yet to reach. The move will provide buses that run on time and fewer cuts to at-risk routes, the paper says. The Sunday Times says ministers are preparing to copy Italy’s model of paying millions to countries in return for them doing more to stop small-boat crossings. The paper says Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is in discussion with a number of governments, including Kurdistan in Iraq, Turkey and Vietnam. Elsewhere, Gladiator director Ridley Scott says he has already started plotting a third instalment of the blockbuster franchise. Not one, but two potential rocket launches are on the horizon — and the Space Coast may get a nice view of them. SpaceX is targeting Sunday and Monday, Nov. 17 and Nov. 18, to launch an Optus-X satellite and GSAT-20 communications satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Depending on cloud cover, weather and visibility, people in Titusville to Melbourne Beach might see a nice streak in the sky for each launch — particularly since this coastal area of Florida that’s home to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. If you’re keeping watch, Florida Space Coast’s has already broken the record of orbital rocket launches in a year, with the bulk of the 2024 missions from SpaceX. In 2023, SpaceX also helped break the record of rocket launches per year — contributing to the 72 launches that were completed near Cape Canaveral. As of Friday, Nov. 15, there have been 79 orbital rocket launches from the Space Coast in 2024. Below are suggestions on where to watch the rocket launch from this area and other things to know. If there are changes to the launch schedule, this story will be updated. For questions or comments, email FLORIDA TODAY Space Reporter Rick Neale at *****@*****.tld. For more space news from the USA TODAY Network, visit floridatoday.com/space. Where can I see a rocket launch in Florida? Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, the SpaceX rocket launch should be visible from almost anywhere in Brevard County. And minutes after liftoff, there’s typically a rumble. Night launches, in particular, are easier to spot and beautiful to see. When there’s a launch window in the middle of the night or very early morning, there’s an opportunity for unique photos — the rocket lights up the dark sky and the contrail after makes for a great photo. Is there a rocket launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, NASA rocket launch schedule from Florida Is there a rocket launch from Florida? Pretty much anywhere in Brevard, you’ll get a view of the rocket launch − in certain areas, you can get an amazing view of SpaceX rocket boosters returning to the pads. The best view to watch a rocket launch from the Space Coast is along the beach. However, visibility will depend on weather conditions and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches. If you are viewing the launch along the Indian River in Titusville from Space View Park or Parrish Park, look east directly across the river. If you are farther south along the Indian River, look northeast. Playalinda Beach or Canaveral National Seashore is the closest spot to view liftoff because it is almost parallel to Launch Pad 39A. 7. Why is my fertility more important than my endometriosis pain? Why is my fertility more important than my endometriosis pain? Emily Griffiths Emily Griffiths is considering a hysterectomy to potentially ease some of her symptoms, but says doctors are unwilling to discuss it as she does not have children Emily Griffiths wants to have an operation to remove her womb, known as a hysterectomy. At 26, with no children, she knows it is a big step. But endometriosis and adenomyosis have left her housebound, in debilitating pain, and unable to see a future as a mum. Right now, she simply dreams of being able to go for a walk unaided. But she says she has been unable to find a clinician who will discuss the procedure because of her age. “Doctors are too busy planning ahead for the child I might want in the future and can’t see where I am right now,” said Emily, from Carmarthenshire. Emily’s symptoms started when she was 12, with periods so painful and heavy that she missed school and became anaemic. She said GPs told her the pain was normal. “They would say it was all in my head and I was just trying to be off school,” she said. Emily was diagnosed with endometriosis aged 21, after collapsing with sepsis. She was referred to a specialist centre in Cardiff, but said the wait was so long that her family self-funded private surgery. Emily, who has been unable to see an NHS specialist, said she had lost count of the private clinicians she had seen and felt there was “zero support” from the health service. Emily Griffiths Emily says she has been going through the menopause with her mum, but few others her own age understand its effects A hysterectomy would leave Emily infertile and prompt the menopause, which in turn could increase her risk of osteoporosis, heart ******** and dementia. Yet for the past three years she has been given a monthly injection to chemically induce menopause, pausing her periods in an effort to alleviate her symptoms. Scans show that has caused her bone density to deteriorate. “A hysterectomy isn’t a cure for endometriosis, but it is for adenomyosis,” she said, adding she was 23 when she received that additional diagnosis. “Even though it’s a big step, I could have the possibility of maybe going for a little walk when I’m really struggling… but at the moment I’m stuck in a very dark place.” What is a hysterectomy? A hysterectomy is a major operation with a long recovery time which is only considered following less invasive treatments. It is carried out to treat health problems affecting the female reproductive system. A total hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the womb and cervix. In some cases the fallopian tubes, ovaries, lymph glands, and part of the *******, can also be removed. What are endometriosis and adenomyosis? Adenomyosis is a condition where the lining of the womb starts growing into the muscle in the wall of the womb. It can cause painful periods and heavy bleeding, as well as pelvic pain, bloating and pain during ****. Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body. Symptoms happen when those patches break down and bleed but cannot leave your body. Emily Griffiths Emily says she’s had to go private for all of her endometriosis treatment, as specialist centres in Wales are either not accepting or prioritising ‘out of area’ patients Endometriosis is currently widespread across both of Emily’s ovaries as well as her *******, bladder and part of her bowel. Her menopausal symptoms have also been severe, but hormone replacement therapy (HRT) makes her endometriosis worse. Because of the complexities of her case, Emily would need an endometriosis specialist to carry out the hysterectomy as it would also involve excision of the endometriosis. A hysterectomy is listed as one of a number of treatment options by NICE for endometriosis and adenomyosis. Endometriosis *** said a hysterectomy could not guarantee total loss of pain and symptoms, but “it’s important to remember that the final choice is yours – it is your body”. Emily said that sentiment was at odds with her own experience. ‘Told I’m too young’ “I don’t really think that women do have the freedom to make a choice over their own bodies,” she said. “I’ve been told that if I settle down ‘you may want to have a child with your husband’ – it’s just planning ahead and not seeing where I am right now. “Basically fertility has been put way above any of my illnesses and what I’m going through.” Emily said she had been advised to stay in a chemically-induced menopause, try the contraceptive pill or anti-depressants, along with “running, pilates or yoga”. “I can’t walk without support, so to tell me about pilates or running is not the nicest comment,” she said. Emily Griffiths Emily has received letters from both the Princess of Wales and the King, in recognition of the work she has done to raise awareness of chronic conditions and disabilities Emily’s work to raise awareness of the issues she faces has earned her recognition from the King and the Princess of Wales. “I’ve had some really amazing opportunities… and that’s what’s keeping me holding on to some sort of hope,” she said. There are currently two accredited NHS endometriosis centres in Wales, in Swansea and Cardiff. The centre in Swansea does not currently accept patients from outside the health board area, while Cardiff said it considers outside referrals “where appropriate”. Every health board has endometriosis nurses to support patients, but Emily, who lives in the Hywel Dda health board region, said lengthy waits meant she had little option but to seek private care. “There’s been two privately funded surgeries so far, with possibly another one coming,” said Emily. Follow-up care and advice also comes at a cost. “No one on the NHS will monitor me currently, so it does become a never ending cycle of funding and finding the right person,” she said. “If you have a question, maybe a certain medication they’ve prescribed isn’t agreeing with me, it always comes at a cost, you can’t simply ring them and find out. “I understand that’s the route you take when you have private care, but if the NHS aren’t there to help either, then there’s no choice.” Sioned Williams, Plaid Cymru’s spokesperson for social justice and equalities, was made aware of Emily’s case after she raised it with her local Member of the Senedd (MS). “The Welsh government has been too slow in delivering their women’s health plan,” Ms Williams said. “People with endometriosis such as Emily just want to be heard and believed and this should not be too much to ask.” Sam Rowlands, the Welsh ************* health spokesperson said: “The Welsh Conservatives would immediately scrap the restrictive NHS guidance that locks patients in their local area, blocking cross-community and cross-border working, to make use of extra capacity to reduce excessive NHS waits in the short term and look to enact a substantial workforce plan to tackle the more deep-seated issues in the longer term.” A Welsh government spokesperson said it had made women’s health “a key priority” and would publish a 10-year women’s health plan in December. “The Women’s Health Network, led by the first ever clinical lead for women’s health in Wales, has been established to deliver improvements including in endometriosis care, treatment and support,” they said. “Health boards are responsible for delivering services and we have funded dedicated endometriosis nurses within each health board.” Source link #fertility #important #endometriosis #pain Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Beijing, through the China Daily, said Mr Albanese had showed “strategic autonomy” amid “unprecedented geopolitical complexity and uncertainty” following Mr Trump’s election. Mr Albanese on Friday (local time) said he didn’t “subscribe to China Daily”. “What I’ve done with China is work in the way that we said we would before the election. We said we would cooperate where we can and we would disagree where we must and we would engage in our national interests. 9. 3 Trucks To Avoid Buying in 2025 3 Trucks To Avoid Buying in 2025 You can’t beat a truck when it comes to functionality and versatility. From day-to-day use to towing a boat or camper to tailgating before the big game, trucks can do it all. Plus, they always come in handy when moving. But not all trucks are created equally. The average car costs around $900 a year to maintain, per Consumer Affairs, but some could put a ******* dent in your budget due to frequent repairs. Shelling out more than you want to or can afford is already bad enough, but a lemon of a truck that racks up additional costs will only cause a great financial hit. Explore More: 7 SUVs To Avoid Buying in 2025 Try This: 9 Things You Must Do To Grow Your Wealth in 2024 For those who are in the market for a 2025 vehicle and want to get the most bang for your buck, here are three trucks to avoid, according to experts. Trending Now: Suze Orman’s Secret to a Wealthy Retirement–Have You Made This Money Move? Not much has changed for the 2025 Honda Ridgeline. The midsize truck maintains its smooth ride, comfortable interior and easy handling, per Edmunds, but it doesn’t offer impressive towing or off-roading capabilities. It also falls short with its 21 mpg fuel economy and overall value for the sticker price. The Honda Ridgeline is ideal for consumers who don’t need to haul and are happy with a truck that drives more like an SUV, but it’s not for everyone. “Despite its solid performance, the Honda Ridgeline is on the verge of being discontinued due to declining sales, especially with the rise of competitors like the Ford Maverick,” Rob Dillan, automotive expert and founder of EVhype, explained to GOBankingRates. “This could impact parts availability and resale value.” Be Aware: Mechanics Explain Why You Should Never Buy These 6 Popular Car Brands The 2025 Nissan Frontier has a few new things to look forward to, like more driver-assist safety features and comfortable seats, but according to MotorTrend, there are no mechanical upgrades, which is concerning since previous models struggled with loud engines and terrible fuel economy. In addition, the Nissan Frontier faces stiff competition from the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, which could be better options depending on consumers’ needs. “The Nissan Frontier relies on older battery technology and offers limited range compared to newer competitors,” Dillan said. “Its aging design and technology may not appeal to consumers looking for modern features.” Big improvements have been made to the 2025 Ram 1500, including a pair of straight-six turbo engines instead of a V8 and upgraded technology and interior, per Edmunds, but things are off to a shaky start. There have been reports of serious safety issues, resulting in a recall. Story Continues “Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is recalling approximately 33,777 Ram 1500 pickup trucks in the U.S. due to concerns with damaged front wheel bearing encoder rings that may affect and disable the electronic stability control system,” Dillan said. Maintenance and repairs will cost $18,469 during the first 10 years of service, per CarEdge, which is $8,364 more than the industry average. However, Dillan warned that buying a new model could cost even more. “The issue could pose safety risks and lead to potential repair costs,” he said. While the 2025 Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier and Ram 1500 have positive aspects, experts and reviews cautioned that they could cause years of financial woes and regret. New Zealand flanker Dalton Papali’i had just picked off his pass and cantered in to give New Zealand a seven-point head start. This time around it was a kick. Eben Etzebeth, looming like a skyscraper, had charged down Van Poortvliet to give South ******* a freebie try and puncture England’s promising start. It will have felt like all his fault. It wasn’t. England’s forwards left him unprotected and vulnerable. Marcus Smith, his fly-half, had his own chance to clear and similarly found a South ******** torso. And, ultimately, the errors added up. For all England’s unquestionable courage and energy, they have continually been undermined by mistakes this autumn. The foundations of a promising team always seem to be subsiding under their own slip-ups. They have come in all different matches, in all different guises, from all areas of the team. Against New Zealand, the crossed wires and fumbled drop-goal routine between Harry Randall and George Ford was most obvious. Against Australia, England’s ******** to secure a kick-off – Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii disrupting Maro Itoje – on the last play was key. But so was a botched midfield move that gave Andrew Kellaway a walk-in. Against South *******, Ben Earl missed a vital tackle on Damian de Allende, before England’s faint hopes of crowbarring their way to a comeback were dashed by Luke Cowan-Dickie’s twitchy line-out throw and Itoje picking, not going and being caught at the back of a promising breakdown. Those are individual moments, perhaps the most glaring ones. But you could pick plenty more. After three straight home defeats for the first time since 2006, the spotlight certainly shouldn’t shine on Van Poortvliet alone. It must also extend to the sidelines to take in selections and systems. Source link #England #South #******* #Groundhogday #defeats #stacking Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese drops big election hint amid speculation of clash with WA poll Prime Minister Anthony Albanese drops big election hint amid speculation of clash with WA poll Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has seemingly let slip when the next Federal election might be as he plays down the prospect of forcing WA to shift its state vote. Premier Roger Cook’s revelation at The West ***********’s Leadership Matters forum that he sought legal advice about shifting WA’s fixed election date ignited speculation Mr Albanese was plotting an early national poll. Mr Albanese last week denied asking Mr Cook to shift the WA election but admitted the pair had spoken about the State election. Asked directly on Sunday to rule out a March Federal election, Mr Albanese told Sky News the speculation was a “completely nothing story”. “He (Mr Cook) has said that his election is on March 8,” Mr Albanese said. “And I talked to state leaders sometimes about the dates in which they have elections set. It is as simple as that.” The Prime Minister said there would be a Federal budget in March and the election “will be in May”, as is scheduled. Mr Albanese quickly walked back the comment, saying “it could be beforehand”. The prospect of WA being forced to shift its election date to accommodate Mr Albanese promoted a fierce backlash, with State Opposition leader Shane Love claiming it showed the Prime Minister “doesn’t give a stuff about Western Australia”. As the election speculation rumbles on, Labor will this week roll out a new ad attacking Peter Dutton for opposing cost-of-living relief during this term. The ad claims the average household would have been $7600 worse-off had Mr Dutton been in power. The figure is based on data that shows the annual pre-tax pay for two average full-time workers is $7300 dollar higher than it would have been had wages grown at the rate of the previous Coalition Government. “Peter Dutton as PM doesn’t add up for working people,” Employment Minister Murray Watt said. 12. After Whoopi Goldberg criticizes NYC bakery, customers pour in After Whoopi Goldberg criticizes NYC bakery, customers pour in GREAT ******, Staten Island (PIX11) — Whoopi Goldberg claimed that a historic bakery on Staten Island wouldn’t fill a dessert request that she’d made because the business didn’t like her politics. The owner of the bakery, Holtermann’s, said that a major maintenance issue at the business had prevented it from filling any large orders, like Goldberg’s, at that time. Now, people from across Staten Island and way beyond have stepped up to show support for Holtermann’s, and, they said, to send a message of disapproval to Goldberg. More Local News The comedienne, actress and host of the talk show “The View” sparked controversy on the show on Wednesday when she showcased a large tray of what Goldberg called her mother’s favorite dessert. It’s called Charlotte Russe. It’s a small, individual piece of cake with raspberry curd, wrapped in decorative paper, and topped with whipped cream with a maraschino cherry on top. “The place that made these refused to make them for me,” Goldberg said during a segment on “The View” on Wednesday. “[My] folks went and got them anyway,” Goldberg continued, “which is why I’m not telling you who made them,” she said. “Perhaps they did not like my politics.” She said during the segment that a large order for the treats had been placed in her name but was turned down. Even though Goldberg didn’t name the bakery, its unique packaging identified the source as Holtermann’s, and word about Goldberg’s displeasure quickly spread. By Friday, there was a long line outside of the bakery on Arthur ***** Road well before it opened at 7:30 a.m. Long lines remained throughout the day until closing time at 6 p.m. The business almost completely sold out of its stock. Its staff baked non-stop, all day. Holtermann’s has been baking on Staten Island for 146 years. Its many devoted customers call it an institution. “I’ll be 82 in January,” said Penny Clark, who’d come to buy coffee cake. “As a little girl,” she continued, “my birthday cakes came from here, holiday cakes came from here. I’ve never stepped away.” Pops and Poosh: Mom runs kitchen at Haitian eatery on Long Island Thomas and Elizabeth Barnes are also regular customers, but they’d never tried the Charlotte Russe “until now,” Elizabeth said. “The bakery didn’t do anything wrong,” her husband Thomas added, “and we’re here to support them. If it helps them get some extra business, then good for them.” Bakery owner Jill Holtermann Bowers said that when Goldberg’s order came in early this month, the bakery’s boiler was being replaced. As a result, said the owner, she couldn’t promise to fill any big orders. “The boiler was from like there to there,” said Holtermann Bowers, pointing to two theoretical points about 12 feet apart. “It took five guys to cut it up, remove it, and then you have to change all the piping.” It was a very large undertaking, the owner said. She was invited by Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella to join him and other local elected officials in a news conference in front of the bakery early on Friday afternoon to show support for the bakery, and to condemn Goldberg’s comments. The news conference lasted about a half hour, but all day, from open to close, there was a non-stop, long line. The reaction, said Holterman Bowers, was the unexpected result of an unexpected situation. “We didn’t know what was going on until somebody called us from Ohio” on Thursday, the bakery owner explained in an interview, “and he said, ‘Y’know, there’s this thing with Whoopi Goldberg and the Charlotte Russe cups,” she said, “and I didn’t know what he was talking about.” That was the first of many, many calls to the business, which helped the owner and her employees quickly learn about what had happened. “We figured it out, and I’m happy for the business, happy for the support,” said Holtermann Bowers. “We give to Staten Island all the time, volunteering, doing everything else,” she continued, “so I’m so happy seeing everybody coming out to support us.” Near the close of business, she said that Friday’s sales figures were at least as strong as they are on her busiest Thanksgiving and Christmas bake ***** days. Customers had left her shelves nearly bare, and, the owner said, she and her staff had taken dozens of orders from other parts of the country for shipping. 13. Trump selects Liberty Energy CEO Chris Wright as secretary of Energy Trump selects Liberty Energy CEO Chris Wright as secretary of Energy President-elect Donald Trump has selected Chris Wright, a campaign donor and fossil fuel executive, to serve as energy secretary in his upcoming, second administration. CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, Wright is a vocal advocate of oil and gas development, including fracking, a key pillar of Trump’s quest to achieve U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Trump also said in a statement Saturday that Wright will serve on the newly-created National Energy Council, which will be chaired by North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s selection for secretary of the Interior. Burgum will oversee a panel that crosses all executive branch agencies involved in energy permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation and transportation, Trump said in a previous statement. Wright has been one of the industry’s loudest voices against efforts to ****** climate change and could give fossil fuels a boost, including quick action to end a year-long pause on natural gas export approvals by the Biden administration. Wright also has criticized what he calls a “top-down” approach to climate by ******** and left-wing groups and said the climate movement around the world is “collapsing under its own weight.” Consideration of Wright to head the administration’s energy department won support from influential conservatives, including oil and gas tycoon Harold Hamm. Hamm, executive chairman of Oklahoma-based Continental Resources, a major shale oil company, is a longtime Trump supporter and adviser who played a key role on energy issues in Trump’s first term. Hamm helped organize an event at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in April where Trump reportedly asked industry leaders and lobbyists to donate $1 billion to Trump’s campaign, with the expectation that Trump would curtail environmental regulations if re-elected. The Energy Department is responsible for advancing energy, environmental and nuclear security of the ******* States. The agency is in charge of maintaining the country’s nuclear weapons, oversees 17 national research laboratories and approves natural gas exports, as well as ensuring environmental cleanup of the nation’s nuclear weapons complex. It also promotes scientific and technological research. *********** Sen. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles will on Sunday host US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and ********* Defence Minister Nakatani Gen for the trilateral ministers’ meeting in Darwin – the first to be held in Australia. Mr Marles, who is also the defence minister, said following annual “2+2” talks with his ********* counterpart in September, both nations looked to how they could build greater familiarity between the their defence forces. One of the “obvious opportunities” was for Japan to participate in activities during the US Marine rotation. “We have spoken to Japan about having their amphibious rapid deployment brigade doing training with our own defence force, with our own army, and with the US Marines,” Mr Marles told Sky News. “Having a more forward-leaning opportunity for greater training with Japan and the US together is a really fantastic opportunity.” China’s expanding military capability has alarmed Washington and countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Asked if the increased military co-operation would anger Beijing, Mr Marles said the decision was about building the nation’s capability. “What we are focused on … is building the best relationships possible with like-minded countries, with our friends and with our allies,” he said. “Japan is obviously a country with whom we share values, a democracy. “We have a huge strategic alignment with Japan. This very much came out of our bilateral meeting in September, but it’s been a theme of the conversations we’ve been having with Japan now for a number of years.” Asked what message he would send to US president-elect Donald Trump’s pick for US defense secretary Pete Hegseth, Mr Marles said it would be that ********* leadership matters. “If there is a world which is only determined by power and might, that does doesn’t leave a lot of space for most countries in the world, and countries like Australia,” he said. 15. New information on mysterious substance appearing on cars in Baldwin County New information on mysterious substance appearing on cars in Baldwin County SILVERHILL, Ala. (WKRG) — The big question in Baldwin County this week — what is the mystery substance appearing on people’s cars? While we don’t know exactly what it is, we’re getting a better idea of what ties all of the incidents together. Fairhope Police Department hosting ‘How to Spot a Scam’ “I thought it was maybe some mud, but it’s gotten progressively darker,” Perri Farlow, a Silverhill resident said. “Now it’s just this dark, yellow, hardened substance all over my car.” The most successful way to remove the substance is to take the vehicle to a detailing shop and let the professionals do the work, and getting it off can come with a hefty price tag. “The initial cost to get this stuff off my truck, I was floored, several thousand dollars,” John Lankford, a Summerdale resident said. “It’s very frustrating that, you know, I have to spend my hard earned dollar and my family’s hard earned dollars to, you know, have my truck repaired.” Although they said they’re looking into it to determine the best steps to work towards a solution, the mystery substance is even leaving county and state officials with questions. Lofton takes stand in ******* trial, testifies he wanted to ****** restaurant manager, not ***** him “Members of our agency of coordinated with several of our partners, especially in Silverhill and Robertsdale, with their *****, police and public works, as well as our own county departments, the Highway department and then Alabama Department of Transportation,” the Director of the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency Tom Tyler said. “There seems to be an equal misunderstanding about what the substance may be or what its origins may be.” But there seems to be one common thread, the people we’ve spoken with all said they drove down State Route 104 through Silverhill last Wednesday. Some decided to take matters into their own hands doing their own research to learn more about the substance. “We are getting lab results from this chemical off of several different vehicles, not just one, not just two, several different vehicles,” Lankford said. “We’re sending the substance off the labs and we’re having it tested.” He said they’re hoping when the results are back they’ll be able to get a better idea of how exactly it got on their cars. “I’ve got three kids in school. I don’t know when I would have time to go take care of this,” Farlow said. “I was in the market for a new car and now, I don’t know how I’m going to sell this if I don’t get it taken care of.” The Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency said there are no indications or evidence that the substance would pose any health hazard. As of Friday afternoon, they have not received any reports of anything of this nature pertaining to the substance. Travis Lofton found guilty of murdering Daphne restaurant manager “We’re all in this together, so if we can find a solution, we’d love to communicate that with the public, especially if there’s any kind of mitigating factors that could assist people who have been impacted by this,” Tyler said. “But right now, we don’t have any of those kind of answers.” Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media, Inc. Gardens of WA: Sara Wordsworth’s English style garden and cottage has thrived against the odds Gardens of WA: Sara Wordsworth’s English style garden and cottage has thrived against the odds Rolling hills, grassy meadows, pastoral views, roses blooming, bees buzzing and tall, stately hollyhocks waving in the wind. If this bucolic scene doesn’t really sound like suburban West *********** living, I’m not surprised. It doesn’t exactly jive with the agaves, birds of paradise and Mondo grass we’ve come to expect from the typical Perth garden. And yet, maybe those dreams of a rambling English cottage scene aren’t pie in the sky at all. Just take a look at Sara Wordsworth’s front yard. She may not have the rolling hills and grassy meadows, but her garden has everything else. “You try to make an environment that you want to be in,” Sara says, surveying her blooming, buzzing, overflowing garden. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the country. I don’t want to live in a city environment … so I’ve made my own country.” Camera IconSara Wordsworth in her garden. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** Bordered by a white picket fence, Sara’s garden beds are wide and generous, filled with huge cottage garden shrubs: spiky echiums, monstrous (and beautiful) giant honey flowers (Melianthus major), roses in every shade of pink, Verbena bonariensis blooming on tall, spindly stems, frothy purple ageratums, salvias, cosmos, Queen Anne’s lace, foxgloves, comfrey, asters, and a collection of cottage garden perennials so unusual I am predictably consumed with gardener’s envy. “I like filling everything. If they say put a rose three feet apart, I put it two feet apart,” Sara chuckles. Her method works. The packed beds are a riot of colour, alive with bees from two beehives she keeps in a bed by the front veranda. This garden has been a labour of love over the past 34 years, but Sara has not done it alone. The garden is a collaboration between herself and David, a horticulturalist and gardener who has worked with her on her gardens for decades. Camera IconThe garden belonging to Sara Wordsworth. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** “David has been with me for 37 years, he’s an integral part,” Sara said. Together, they have created a cottage garden that thrives, despite our hot, dry climate and sandy soils. Sara’s secret to healthy soil is, I’m pleased to discover, exactly like mine. “I get clay and work it into the soil,” she explained. “For 30-something years I’ve put manure on and lupin mulch — you keep doing it every year. When the spring flush is over, I’ll do it again”. Camera IconThe garden has been a labour of love over the past 34 years. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** She is rewarded for her consistency with a garden that truly looks as though it has been plucked from the English countryside, with a degree of beautiful chaos that can only be achieved by a gardener who knows when to step back and let nature do its thing. After years of soil cultivation, most of Sara’s annual plants are now self-sown from last year’s blooms, carried by the wind, or birds, or thrown by Sara onto bare patches of earth and allowed to grow wherever they please. The effect is a garden that gives its visitors the magical feeling of having just stumbled upon a secret wildflower meadow, existing somehow — miraculously — in the heart of the suburbs. What Happened: Van de Poppe has identified that Bitcoin and Ethereum are approaching levels where purchasing on dips could prove beneficial. Van de Poppe stressed the significance of “dip buying” for Bitcoin, which is currently trading at $89,250. He pointed out that Bitcoin is nearing its first major point of interest for traders. Don’t Miss: Meanwhile, Ethereum, priced at $3,040, is also nearing an optimal entry point. “Dip buying, that’s what we want with Bitcoin. Getting close to the first point of interest, and, in the meantime, ETH is getting close towards an optimal entry as well.” “The general plan for the upcoming ******* is to buy the dip.” See Also: If you invested $100 in DOGE when Elon Musk first tweeted about it in 2019, here’s how much you’d have today. The analyst also highlighted opportunities in other altcoins, advising traders to watch for entry points in these digital assets in the coming weeks. Story Continues Van de Poppe’s strategy for the near future involves buying dips, with altcoins expected to see significant breakouts. He recommended maximizing potential gains by purchasing altcoins during 20-50% dips, allowing traders to capitalize on anticipated market movements in the cryptocurrency sector. Why It Matters: The cryptocurrency market has been experiencing fluctuations, with recent events adding complexity to the trading landscape. Earlier this week, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks dampened hopes for rate cuts, causing Bitcoin to dip below $88,000 after initially surpassing $91,000. Ethereum also saw a decline, dropping from $3,240 to $3,040. Despite these setbacks, optimism ********. On November 15, Ark Invest’s Cathie Wood projected Bitcoin’s price could reach up to $1.5 million by 2030, citing regulatory relief and growing institutional interest. ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is an exception. The largest U.S.-based oil and gas major by market cap just raised its dividend for the 42nd consecutive year to $0.99 per share per quarter. Investing $6,000 in Exxon stock should generate over $200 in passive income per year and likely more over time if Exxon keeps boosting its payout. Start Your Mornings Smarter! Image source: Getty Images. Exxon achieved blowout third-quarter 2024 results, including its highest liquids (oil, natural gas liquids, etc.) production in over 40 years. Higher production came from further developments offshore from Guyana and ExxonMobil’s acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources (Pioneer), which has expanded Exxon’s already lucrative Permian Basin portfolio. Year to date, Exxon has generated $18.89 billion in earnings and $26.35 billion in free cash flow (FCF) and has averaged 4.23 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) compared to $17.16 billion in earnings, $28.13 billion in FCF, and 3.71 million boe/d for the first three quarters of 2023. The Pioneer acquisition is helping to offset the impact of lower oil and gas prices. However, Exxon has also cut costs and centered investments around quality rather than quantity. More than half of production now comes from “advantaged assets” — namely, higher-margin production areas offshore Guyana and the Permian Basin. Exxon has achieved $11.3 billion in structural cost savings since 2019, including $600 million in the recent quarter and $1.6 billion year to date. In the third-quarter press release, Exxon said it is on track to deliver cumulative savings totaling $15 billion through the end of 2027 versus 2019. Exxon is on track to deliver on the goals ***** out in its December 2023 corporate plan. ExxonMobil ***** out several short-term and medium-term targets — including $15 billion in cost savings through 2027, $23 to $25 billion in 2024 capital expenditures (capex), with more than 90% of planned upstream capital investments over the next five years expected to generate 10% or higher returns even at Brent crude oil prices of $35 per barrel. For context, Brent prices are around $75 at the time of this writing. The following chart shows ExxonMobil’s capex and the spot price of Brent Crude Oil. Story Continues XOM Capital Expenditures (TTM) data by YCharts Notice that capex tends to peak right before declining oil prices, then reaccelerate once oil prices increase again. So, historically, Exxon’s plan to continue ramping capex would be concerning. However, Exxon has a far more efficient and high-quality production portfolio today than in past years. And it is staying disciplined with the way it allocates capital. Exxon finished the quarter with $26.93 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $36.92 billion in long-term debt, and $42.6 billion in total debt — giving it a net debt of just $15.67 billion. Exxon’s net-debt-to-capital ratio, which is net debt divided by total stockholder’s equity plus net debt, is now just 5% — giving the company a healthy capital structure that doesn’t rely on debt. Exxon’s efficient use of capital, high-margin asset base, reasonable spending plans, and strong balance sheet pave the way for record capital returns to shareholders. Exxon is on track for a stagging $19 billion in buybacks this year and around $16.5 billion in dividend payments — bringing its total capital return program to $35.5 billion. With a yield of 3.3%, Exxon offers considerably more passive income than an S&P 500 index fund, which yields around 1.3%. Even at mediocre oil prices, Exxon is generating plenty of FCF to make long-term investments in oil, gas, and low-carbon efforts, such as carbon capture and storage, while also returning a ton of money to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. Exxon’s buyback budget is an excellent way to gauge how much wiggle room the company has. With $19 billion in buybacks planned for 2024, Exxon is telling investors how much money it doesn’t need to run the business, invest in long-term growth, or pay dividends. If oil prices really tank, Exxon can simply pause buybacks without damaging its dividend track record or its business developments. It’s a luxury that results from Exxon’s diversified business model, structural cost reductions, efficient asset base, and technological improvements in oil and gas production. All told, ExxonMobil is at the top of its game and has set clear targets for which investors can hold it accountable. On Dec. 11, Exxon will host a virtual event, which investors may want to tune into to see how the company updates its corporate plan and medium-term targets. But Onion CEO Ben Collins countered this in an update posted on Bluesky and X on Saturday, writing, “We left the hearing with clear next steps to complete the *****.” According to Collins, a court date has been set for a week from Monday, when the process is expected to be completed, and Infowars asked for permission to continue publishing in the meantime. “The long and short of it: We won the auction and — you’re not going to believe this — the previous InfoWars folks aren’t taking it well,” Collins wrote. “On Thursday, the person overseeing the auction told us that The Onion’s bid for InfoWars, along with the Connecticut Sandy ***** families, won,” Collins wrote in the thread. “We haven’t heard anything that changed that — except, of course, from the guys currently running InfoWars, doing InfoWars stuff.” Jones has unsurprisingly called the auction “rigged,” and in a livestream on X said that lawyers for Elon Musk’s social media site have gotten involved and attended the hearing, Mother Jones reported. The Onion only went up against one other bidder in the auction for Infowars: First ******* ********* Companies, which is associated with a website that sells Jones’ supplements. The company reportedly bid $3.5 million. The dollar amount of Global Tetrahedron’s (The Onion’s parent company) bid has not been disclosed, but it’s been backed by families of the Sandy ***** ********* victims. Per Bloomberg, trustee Christopher Murray, who is liquidating Jones’ estate, said these families have “agreed to waive their potential recovery and give it to all other unsecured creditors” that Jones owes. “There was a status conference with the judge overseeing the auction on Thursday, shortly after we were deemed winners,” Collins, who formerly covered disinformation and online extremism as a reporter for NBC News, wrote in the thread on Saturday. “The judge had some questions about process and some assets. We’re glad he’s doing that, since our bid with the families is clearly the best and transparency is even better.” He added further down: “We expected all of this, obviously. Buying this site was always going to be fun later on, but annoying right away. The fun part is still to come.” Collins’ plan for Infowars is for it to “relaunch as the dumbest website on the internet.” The nonprofit Everytown for **** Safety will reportedly be the sole advertiser at launch. 24. Harris campaign spent $24,000 on Uber Eats and ice cream Harris campaign spent $24,000 on Uber Eats and ice cream Kamala Harris’s campaign spent $24,000 on Uber Eats and ice creams, filings show, amid questions about how the party blew $1.5 billion on a ******* election. Democrats spent $14,974.31 on food deliveries from Uber Eats and DoorDash from July onwards, according to the Federal Election Commission. Details of the Harris campaign’s spending decisions come amid party recriminations following the Democrats’ decisive election defeat on Nov 5. “We didn’t emphasise the economy,” Ro Khanna, a California Congressman, told The Washington Post on Saturday. “Instead, we spent a billion dollars having concerts all over America. I mean, it was ridiculous.” Filings show the campaign also shelled out $8,929.12 on ice cream pints and parlours such as Sweet Lucy’s Ice Cream and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams after Joe Biden dropped out of the race. A further $6,000-“site fee” was paid to the Arizona board game cafe Snakes and Lattes for a Tim Walz visit. Tim Walz and his wife Gwen with Ms Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff on the campaign trail Democrats also forked out a further $2.6 million on private jet travel in the final days of the campaign as part of a blitz of the battleground states. As Ms Harris ******-crossed the nation between Oct 1 – Oct 17, her campaign spent nearly $2.2 million on south Florida-based firm Private Jet Services Group and a further $430,000 on Advanced Aviation Team in Virginia, the New York Post reported. The late flurry of flights brought Ms Harris’s total spend on private jets to $12 million, the outlet reported. The use of private jets, which can be up to 14 times more polluting than commercial flights, clashes with her calls on the campaign trail to cut back on carbon emissions. Ms Harris has previously called climate change an “existential threat”, drawing a stark contrast with Mr Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” policy on fossil fuels. Ms Harris used private jets to travel around the country during her election campaign – Jacquelyn Martin/via REUTERS Despite the Harris campaign spending a record $1.6 billion, Mr Trump made gains in almost every state, notably picking up votes among blue collar workers who have traditionally made up the Democratic Party’s base. Following the Democrats’ election defeat, reports have emerged that the Harris campaign has overspent, leaving it saddled with $20 million in debt and prompting concern that staff who worked for the operation will not be paid. Bernie Sanders, the veteran Vermont Senator, said following the election that the Democratic Party “has abandoned working class people” and should not be surprised “the working class has abandoned them”. Mr Sanders, an independent who previously ran to lead the Democrats, said multi-billionaires such as Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, and Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn, held too much sway over the campaign. “Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign?” he said.
