Gyokeres took his nation’s opening goal in the third minute. The pink slips went out last week to members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, The Seattle Times reported. The workers will remain on the payroll through mid-January. Boeing announced in October that it planned to cut 10% of its workforce, about 17,000 jobs, in the coming months. CEO Kelly Ortberg told employees the company must “reset its workforce levels to align with our financial reality.” The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, union said the cuts had affected 438 members. The union’s local chapter has 17,000 Boeing employees who are largely based in Washington, with some in Oregon, California and Utah. Of those 438 workers, 218 are members of SPEEA’s professional unit, which includes engineers and scientists. The rest are members of the technical unit, which includes analysts, planners, technicians and skilled tradespeople. Eligible employees will receive career transition services and subsidized health care benefits for up to three months. Workers will also receive severance, typically about one week of pay for every year of service. Boeing’s unionized Machinists began returning to work earlier this month following the strike. The strike strained Boeing’s finances. But Ortberg said on an October call with analysts that it did not cause the layoffs, which he described as a result of overstaffing. Boeing, based in Arlington, Virginia, has been in financial and regulatory trouble since a panel blew off the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines plane in January. Production rates slowed to a crawl, and the Federal Aviation Administration capped production of the 737 MAX at 38 planes per month, a threshold Boeing has yet to reach. Emily Griffiths Emily Griffiths is considering a hysterectomy to potentially ease some of her symptoms, but says doctors are unwilling to discuss it as she does not have children Emily Griffiths wants to have an operation to remove her womb, known as a hysterectomy. At 26, with no children, she knows it is a big step. But endometriosis and adenomyosis have left her housebound, in debilitating pain, and unable to see a future as a mum. Right now, she simply dreams of being able to go for a walk unaided. But she says she has been unable to find a clinician who will discuss the procedure because of her age. “Doctors are too busy planning ahead for the child I might want in the future and can’t see where I am right now,” said Emily, from Carmarthenshire. Emily’s symptoms started when she was 12, with periods so painful and heavy that she missed school and became anaemic. She said GPs told her the pain was normal. “They would say it was all in my head and I was just trying to be off school,” she said. Emily was diagnosed with endometriosis aged 21, after collapsing with sepsis. She was referred to a specialist centre in Cardiff, but said the wait was so long that her family self-funded private surgery. Emily, who has been unable to see an NHS specialist, said she had lost count of the private clinicians she had seen and felt there was “zero support” from the health service. Emily Griffiths Emily says she has been going through the menopause with her mum, but few others her own age understand its effects A hysterectomy would leave Emily infertile and prompt the menopause, which in turn could increase her risk of osteoporosis, heart ******** and dementia. Yet for the past three years she has been given a monthly injection to chemically induce menopause, pausing her periods in an effort to alleviate her symptoms. Scans show that has caused her bone density to deteriorate. “A hysterectomy isn’t a cure for endometriosis, but it is for adenomyosis,” she said, adding she was 23 when she received that additional diagnosis. “Even though it’s a big step, I could have the possibility of maybe going for a little walk when I’m really struggling… but at the moment I’m stuck in a very dark place.” What is a hysterectomy? A hysterectomy is a major operation with a long recovery time which is only considered following less invasive treatments. It is carried out to treat health problems affecting the female reproductive system. A total hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the womb and cervix. In some cases the fallopian tubes, ovaries, lymph glands, and part of the *******, can also be removed. What are endometriosis and adenomyosis? Adenomyosis is a condition where the lining of the womb starts growing into the muscle in the wall of the womb. It can cause painful periods and heavy bleeding, as well as pelvic pain, bloating and pain during ****. Endometriosis is where cells similar to those in the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body. Symptoms happen when those patches break down and bleed but cannot leave your body. Emily Griffiths Emily says she’s had to go private for all of her endometriosis treatment, as specialist centres in Wales are either not accepting or prioritising ‘out of area’ patients Endometriosis is currently widespread across both of Emily’s ovaries as well as her *******, bladder and part of her bowel. Her menopausal symptoms have also been severe, but hormone replacement therapy (HRT) makes her endometriosis worse. Because of the complexities of her case, Emily would need an endometriosis specialist to carry out the hysterectomy as it would also involve excision of the endometriosis. A hysterectomy is listed as one of a number of treatment options by NICE for endometriosis and adenomyosis. Endometriosis *** said a hysterectomy could not guarantee total loss of pain and symptoms, but “it’s important to remember that the final choice is yours – it is your body”. Emily said that sentiment was at odds with her own experience. ‘Told I’m too young’ “I don’t really think that women do have the freedom to make a choice over their own bodies,” she said. “I’ve been told that if I settle down ‘you may want to have a child with your husband’ – it’s just planning ahead and not seeing where I am right now. “Basically fertility has been put way above any of my illnesses and what I’m going through.” Emily said she had been advised to stay in a chemically-induced menopause, try the contraceptive pill or anti-depressants, along with “running, pilates or yoga”. “I can’t walk without support, so to tell me about pilates or running is not the nicest comment,” she said. Emily Griffiths Emily has received letters from both the Princess of Wales and the King, in recognition of the work she has done to raise awareness of chronic conditions and disabilities Emily’s work to raise awareness of the issues she faces has earned her recognition from the King and the Princess of Wales. “I’ve had some really amazing opportunities… and that’s what’s keeping me holding on to some sort of hope,” she said. There are currently two accredited NHS endometriosis centres in Wales, in Swansea and Cardiff. The centre in Swansea does not currently accept patients from outside the health board area, while Cardiff said it considers outside referrals “where appropriate”. Every health board has endometriosis nurses to support patients, but Emily, who lives in the Hywel Dda health board region, said lengthy waits meant she had little option but to seek private care. “There’s been two privately funded surgeries so far, with possibly another one coming,” said Emily. Follow-up care and advice also comes at a cost. “No one on the NHS will monitor me currently, so it does become a never ending cycle of funding and finding the right person,” she said. “If you have a question, maybe a certain medication they’ve prescribed isn’t agreeing with me, it always comes at a cost, you can’t simply ring them and find out. “I understand that’s the route you take when you have private care, but if the NHS aren’t there to help either, then there’s no choice.” Sioned Williams, Plaid Cymru’s spokesperson for social justice and equalities, was made aware of Emily’s case after she raised it with her local Member of the Senedd (MS). “The Welsh government has been too slow in delivering their women’s health plan,” Ms Williams said. “People with endometriosis such as Emily just want to be heard and believed and this should not be too much to ask.” Sam Rowlands, the Welsh ************* health spokesperson said: “The Welsh Conservatives would immediately scrap the restrictive NHS guidance that locks patients in their local area, blocking cross-community and cross-border working, to make use of extra capacity to reduce excessive NHS waits in the short term and look to enact a substantial workforce plan to tackle the more deep-seated issues in the longer term.” A Welsh government spokesperson said it had made women’s health “a key priority” and would publish a 10-year women’s health plan in December. “The Women’s Health Network, led by the first ever clinical lead for women’s health in Wales, has been established to deliver improvements including in endometriosis care, treatment and support,” they said. “Health boards are responsible for delivering services and we have funded dedicated endometriosis nurses within each health board.” Source link #fertility #important #endometriosis #pain Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

More Local News The comedienne, actress and host of the talk show “The View” sparked controversy on the show on Wednesday when she showcased a large tray of what Goldberg called her mother’s favorite dessert. It’s called Charlotte Russe. It’s a small, individual piece of cake with raspberry curd, wrapped in decorative paper, and topped with whipped cream with a maraschino cherry on top. “The place that made these refused to make them for me,” Goldberg said during a segment on “The View” on Wednesday. “[My] folks went and got them anyway,” Goldberg continued, “which is why I’m not telling you who made them,” she said. “Perhaps they did not like my politics.” She said during the segment that a large order for the treats had been placed in her name but was turned down. I’ve never stepped away.” Pops and Poosh: Mom runs kitchen at Haitian eatery on Long Island Thomas and Elizabeth Barnes are also regular customers, but they’d never tried the Charlotte Russe “until now,” Elizabeth said. “The bakery didn’t do anything wrong,” her husband Thomas added, “and we’re here to support them. If it helps them get some extra business, then good for them.” Bakery owner Jill Holtermann Bowers said that when Goldberg’s order came in early this month, the bakery’s boiler was being replaced. As a result, said the owner, she couldn’t promise to fill any big orders. “The boiler was from like there to there,” said Holtermann Bowers, pointing to two theoretical points about 12 feet apart. “It took five guys to cut it up, remove it, and then you have to change all the piping.” It was a very large undertaking, the owner said. The news conference lasted about a half hour, but all day, from open to close, there was a non-stop, long line. The reaction, said Holterman Bowers, was the unexpected result of an unexpected situation. “We didn’t know what was going on until somebody called us from Ohio” on Thursday, the bakery owner explained in an interview, “and he said, ‘Y’know, there’s this thing with Whoopi Goldberg and the Charlotte Russe cups,” she said, “and I didn’t know what he was talking about.” That was the first of many, many calls to the business, which helped the owner and her employees quickly learn about what had happened. “We figured it out, and I’m happy for the business, happy for the support,” said Holtermann Bowers. “We give to Staten Island all the time, volunteering, doing everything else,” she continued, “so I’m so happy seeing everybody coming out to support us.” Near the close of business, she said that Friday’s sales figures were at least as strong as they are on her busiest Thanksgiving and Christmas bake ***** days. Fairhope Police Department hosting ‘How to Spot a Scam’ “I thought it was maybe some mud, but it’s gotten progressively darker,” Perri Farlow, a Silverhill resident said. “Now it’s just this dark, yellow, hardened substance all over my car.” The most successful way to remove the substance is to take the vehicle to a detailing shop and let the professionals do the work, and getting it off can come with a hefty price tag. “The initial cost to get this stuff off my truck, I was floored, several thousand dollars,” John Lankford, a Summerdale resident said. “It’s very frustrating that, you know, I have to spend my hard earned dollar and my family’s hard earned dollars to, you know, have my truck repaired.” Although they said they’re looking into it to determine the best steps to work towards a solution, the mystery substance is even leaving county and state officials with questions. As of Friday afternoon, they have not received any reports of anything of this nature pertaining to the substance. It doesn’t exactly jive with the agaves, birds of paradise and Mondo grass we’ve come to expect from the typical Perth garden. And yet, maybe those dreams of a rambling English cottage scene aren’t pie in the sky at all. Just take a look at Sara Wordsworth’s front yard. She may not have the rolling hills and grassy meadows, but her garden has everything else. “You try to make an environment that you want to be in,” Sara says, surveying her blooming, buzzing, overflowing garden. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the country. If they say put a rose three feet apart, I put it two feet apart,” Sara chuckles. Her method works. The packed beds are a riot of colour, alive with bees from two beehives she keeps in a bed by the front veranda. This garden has been a labour of love over the past 34 years, but Sara has not done it alone. ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) is an exception. The largest U.S.-based oil and gas major by market cap just raised its dividend for the 42nd consecutive year to $0.99 per share per quarter. Image source: Getty Images. Exxon achieved blowout third-quarter 2024 results, including its highest liquids (oil, natural gas liquids, etc.) production in over 40 years. Higher production came from further developments offshore from Guyana and ExxonMobil’s acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources (Pioneer), which has expanded Exxon’s already lucrative Permian Basin portfolio. Year to date, Exxon has generated $18.89 billion in earnings and $26.35 billion in free cash flow (FCF) and has averaged 4.23 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) compared to $17.16 billion in earnings, $28.13 billion in FCF, and 3.71 million boe/d for the first three quarters of 2023. The Pioneer acquisition is helping to offset the impact of lower oil and gas prices. However, Exxon has also cut costs and centered investments around quality rather than quantity. More than half of production now comes from “advantaged assets” — namely, higher-margin production areas offshore Guyana and the Permian Basin. Exxon has achieved $11.3 billion in structural cost savings since 2019, including $600 million in the recent quarter and $1.6 billion year to date. In the third-quarter press release, Exxon said it is on track to deliver cumulative savings totaling $15 billion through the end of 2027 versus 2019. Exxon is on track to deliver on the goals ***** out in its December 2023 corporate plan. ExxonMobil ***** out several short-term and medium-term targets — including $15 billion in cost savings through 2027, $23 to $25 billion in 2024 capital expenditures (capex), with more than 90% of planned upstream capital investments over the next five years expected to generate 10% or higher returns even at Brent crude oil prices of $35 per barrel. For context, Brent prices are around $75 at the time of this writing. The following chart shows ExxonMobil’s capex and the spot price of Brent Crude Oil. Story Continues XOM Capital Expenditures (TTM) data by YCharts Notice that capex tends to peak right before declining oil prices, then reaccelerate once oil prices increase again. So, historically, Exxon’s plan to continue ramping capex would be concerning. However, Exxon has a far more efficient and high-quality production portfolio today than in past years. And it is staying disciplined with the way it allocates capital. Exxon finished the quarter with $26.93 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $36.92 billion in long-term debt, and $42.6 billion in total debt — giving it a net debt of just $15.67 billion. Exxon’s net-debt-to-capital ratio, which is net debt divided by total stockholder’s equity plus net debt, is now just 5% — giving the company a healthy capital structure that doesn’t rely on debt. Exxon’s efficient use of capital, high-margin asset base, reasonable spending plans, and strong balance sheet pave the way for record capital returns to shareholders. Exxon is on track for a stagging $19 billion in buybacks this year and around $16.5 billion in dividend payments — bringing its total capital return program to $35.5 billion. With a yield of 3.3%, Exxon offers considerably more passive income than an S&P 500 index fund, which yields around 1.3%. Even at mediocre oil prices, Exxon is generating plenty of FCF to make long-term investments in oil, gas, and low-carbon efforts, such as carbon capture and storage, while also returning a ton of money to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. Exxon’s buyback budget is an excellent way to gauge how much wiggle room the company has. With $19 billion in buybacks planned for 2024, Exxon is telling investors how much money it doesn’t need to run the business, invest in long-term growth, or pay dividends. If oil prices really tank, Exxon can simply pause buybacks without damaging its dividend track record or its business developments. It’s a luxury that results from Exxon’s diversified business model, structural cost reductions, efficient asset base, and technological improvements in oil and gas production. All told, ExxonMobil is at the top of its game and has set clear targets for which investors can hold it accountable. Details of the Harris campaign’s spending decisions come amid party recriminations following the Democrats’ decisive election defeat on Nov 5. “We didn’t emphasise the economy,” Ro Khanna, a California Congressman, told The Washington Post on Saturday. “Instead, we spent a billion dollars having concerts all over America.
