  1. ************ detainee says he was tortured in Israeli detention centre ************ detainee says he was tortured in Israeli detention centre KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza (Reuters) – ************ medic and ambulance worker Tarek Rabie Safi, freed from an Israeli jail as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and ******, said he was underfed and abused during almost a year in captivity. Safi, a 39-year-old father of two, was released along with 368 other ************ detainees on Saturday, after ****** freed three Israeli hostages from Gaza. ************ prisoners and Israeli hostages have both complained of harsh treatment in the hands of their captors. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “I was held by the Israeli army in the Gaza ‘envelop’, which is Sde Teiman where I stayed for four months (and I was subjected to) torture of our bodies (physical torture) and hunger,” a gaunt-looking Safi said. “(There was) no (decent) food, or drinks, or (medical) treatment. My arm was broken, and they did not treat me, and they did not get me checked by a doctor.” The Israeli military rejected the claims in an emailed response to Reuters’ queries, saying detainees are given food and drink regularly and have access to medical care, and that if necessary, they are transferred to a medical facility with advanced capabilities. Safi, who was detained in March last year near Khan Younis in southern Gaza, said a detainee who was in the same room with him had died as a result of his treatment. “A young man who was with me was martyred, Mussab Haniyeh, may God have mercy on him, in the same room. This young man was strong, but due to the lack of food, lack of drinks and frequent torture, he was martyred in front of our eyes,” Safi said. After four months in the detention centre, Safi was moved to other Israeli jails until his release in Khan Younis, where he was reunited with his family in emotional scenes. The Israeli military said it is aware of incidents of detainee deaths, but cannot comment since investigations are pending. The ************ Prisoner Association, which documents Israeli detentions of Palestinians, said that Israel is carrying out “systematic crimes and revenge attacks” against prisoners, most recently in the Israeli-occupied West Bank’s Ofer prison. Abdullah al-Zaghari, head of the association, said that the group had documented horrific testimonies, including severe beatings and shackling prisoners for days and weeks without food or water. Reuters is unable to independently confirm the reports. Human rights group Amnesty International said last year that 27 released detainees it had interviewed consistently described being subjected to torture on at least one occasion during their arrest. Cilic, 36, the 2014 US Open champion who has fallen to No. 192 in the rankings, was playing his first match of the season after recovering from a long-term knee injury. The Croatian led 4-3 and 0-40 on Alcaraz’s serve in the second set, but the Spanish four-time major winner managed to recover and then broke in the next game. “I am just really happy that I stayed calm at that moment, breathing, going through my routines, making good points,” Alcaraz said. “That’s why I was able to win in two sets.” Alcaraz will now play either Zhang Zhizhen of China or Italy’s Luca Nardi. 7. Ubisoft Sent an Open Apology Letter To Japan After Assassin’s Creed Shadows Caused Massive Outrage Ubisoft Sent an Open Apology Letter To Japan After Assassin’s Creed Shadows Caused Massive Outrage When Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows was first revealed in May 2024, there was a lot of chatter about the game’s protagonists, particularly about Yasuke. Ubisoft was accused of “going woke” as people criticized their decision to feature a ****** samurai protagonist instead of an indigenous Japanese one. A petition was filed, originally in Japanese, claiming that Yasuke’s depiction was disrespectful and demanded the cancellation of the game. Ubisoft swiftly responded to the controversy by apologizing to Japanese players. There was a lot of criticism over Yasuke’s depiction in Assassin’s Creed Shadows (Image via Ubisoft) Assassin’s Creed video games have always been inspired by historical events, rather than being based entirely on them. So, the Yasuke controversy doesn’t exactly make sense, but still, Ubisoft decided to apologize to the players, adding that they worked with various experts while developing the game, something that even art director Thierry Dansereau has highlighted in the past. Ubisoft apologized to Japanese players for Yasuke’s depiction in Assassin’s Creed Shadows The initial response to Assassin’s Creed Shadows wasn’t exactly how Ubisoft expected it to be. The controversy was due to one of the game’s protagonists, Yasuke, who is inspired by an African samurai of the same name. The studio was criticized for not picking an indigenous Japanese samurai, but Ubisoft defended its decision by stating that it wants players to explore Japan through “the eyes of a foreigner.“ Subsequently, a petition was signed that claimed that the depiction of a Japanese samurai in Shadows is inaccurate and disrespects the Japanese culture. Ubisoft then responded to the controversy by releasing a statement on X. The Assassin’s Creed Shadows team has a message for our Japanese community. pic.twitter.com/AIyWNU9YhG — Assassin’s Creed (@assassinscreed) July 23, 2024 As Ubisoft stated, the franchise has never depicted history exactly the way it was. Its setting and characters are inspired by history but there’s always a twist. Even Yoshiki Okamoto, a Japanese game designer who has worked on popular video game franchises like Street Fighter, Monster Strike, and Red Dead, defended Ubisoft claiming that the game is a “fantasy,” not reality. Ubisoft has worked with experts to avoid historical inaccuracies Ubisoft is confident that the game will be well-received by the players (Image via Ubisoft) In the statement, Ubisoft pointed out that it worked with external consultants, historians, researchers, and internal teams at Ubisoft Japan to make sure that the game is historically accurate. This was also highlighted by the game’s art director Thierry Dansereau in an interview with Eurogamer. He said, There was a letter published by Ubisoft apologizing to that group of people in Japan – But something they need to know is we are working with experts, world-renowned experts, and if we have in any way offended [people] we are sorry but this is not the goal. He added that the team paid a lot of attention to staying as respectful as possible to Japanese culture. In the end, everyone at Ubisoft is confident with how the game will be received. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was originally set to be released on November 15th, 2024. However, the release date was pushed to February 14th, 2025, for further polishing. Once again, in January, Ubisoft delayed the game, setting March 20th as its new release date. 8. Trump threat looms over MLAs’ return to B.C. legislature Trump threat looms over MLAs’ return to B.C. legislature When British Columbia’s Legislature opens for the first time in nine months on Tuesday, the driving force behind the province’s politics and the government’s upended agenda will be thousands of kilometres away. New Lt.-Gov. Wendy Cocchia will deliver a throne speech outlining the NDP government’s goals, opening the legislative session against the backdrop of economic uncertainty and the looming threat of whopping tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump. 1:58 B.C. budget expected in March amidst possible trade tariffs Already, at least one flagship promise is out the window, with last week’s cancellation of the government’s $1,000 grocery rebate by Finance Minister Brenda Bailey, who said the government would also have to “revisit” its election vow for a middle-income tax cut in future budgets. Story continues below advertisement B.C. was facing an “unpredictable” future she said on Thursday. Opposition Leader John Rustad said the government should have been on this problem shortly after Trump won the U.S. election. “Should we have had that honour of forming government, I would have been in Washington back in November,” Rustad said. “You have to understand how Trump negotiates. This is how he negotiates, right, with a lot of bluster and threats,” he said. But Bailey said last week that the impact of Trump’s threatened tariffs were impossible to predict, with B.C.’s budget scheduled for release on March 4, the very day that a pause on Trump’s threatened tariffs on ********* exports expires. 1:58 Eby and Premiers in Washington “At a time when Canadians across the country are pulling together, our number one priority is to be ready to defend the people of B.C. no matter what comes next,” Bailey said. Story continues below advertisement Bailey said that part of the government’s response to the tariff threats will be to protect current resources, making sure that provincial investments are working as intended for the people of B.C. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. “For the budget next month, it’s impossible to predict what the tariffs may be, let alone their impacts. That makes it very challenging to know what we need to have at the ready to deliver targeted help for impacted businesses, people, workers to get through what could be an incredibly difficult time.” Premier David Eby was in Washington, D.C., last week along with Canada’s other premiers and met with top White House officials. He told media afterwards that he believed there are ways the two countries can work together on Trump’s demands to increase prosperity on both sides of the border. “But what’s on offer right now, unfortunately, is continued threats of tariffs, uncertainty. It’s not clear what the objectives are, and in that atmosphere, British Columbia only has one choice, which is to look to other customers and that’s what we’re going to do.” 1:02 B.C. pauses grocery tax rebate amid U.S. tariff uncertainty Trending Now Cargo ship crew rescued after running aground on Newfoundland coast Why a former CSIS official says the U.S. is positioned for ‘another 9/11’ House Leader Mike Farnworth told reporters last week the tariff threats are the “number one priority” facing the government, which clung to power with a one-seat majority in the fall election. Story continues below advertisement The NDP holds 47 seats and faces a large opposition party for the next four years with the Conservative Party of BC holding 44 seats. The BC Green Party holds two seats and agreed to support the NDPs on confidence votes. Rustad said he expects this legislative session to be a “rather raucous time.” “We have a lot of new MLAs and they are going to be eager to hold the government to account,” he said. Key issues will be fentanyl, the borders “and what’s going on with Trump,” Rustad said. “He wants the borders protected. He wants to stop the flow of fentanyl. And guess what? That’s what I want too.” 1:45 ********* patriotism on display for Flag Day Mike De Jong, who was an MLA representing the B.C. Liberal Party, then BC United between 1994-2024, said that while the province has lived through other crises, this one is different. Story continues below advertisement “There is a level and type of uncertainty out there that is very concerning and will impact potentially, Canada, but we do need to put that in perspective when we talk about uncertainty,” De Jong said, referencing the 2001 attack of the World Trade Center in New York, the global financial crisis and the pandemic. A key difference is that B.C. is economically weaker now with a record deficit, said De Jong, who’s currently seeking nomination for the federal Conservative Party. “A big difference is, and this is true provincially and federally, the government’s ability to step in and address that uncertainty, perhaps provide fiscal supports is very, very much diminished and compromised,” De Jong said. “As much as I deplore and find insulting and unacceptable the tactics and language of President Trump, the fact that we are in such a weakened position today to respond is the fault of governments in Canada.” More on Politics More videos &copy 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Trump #threat #looms #MLAs #return #B.C #legislature Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  10. Shadows’ After You Realize Ubisoft’s Mad Plan Shadows’ After You Realize Ubisoft’s Mad Plan Ubisoft has been on a downward spiral lately, with many of its projects being either canned or delayed to oblivion. XDefiant’s closure was a huge slap in the face after Ubisoft explicitly said they had no plans to close it down, and their golden goose, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has already been delayed several times. While the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows remains up for debate, (as does the company’s future) Ubisoft may already have an even more ridiculous game plan to counter its fall, which involves releasing multiple mainline titles in 5 years. Ubisoft plans to release 10 Assassin’s Creed games in 5 years Ubisoft’s master plan involves releasing multiple Assassin’s Creed games | Image Credit: Ubisoft As per a recent report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Ubisoft seems to have doubled down on releasing Assassin’s Creed games following its precarious circumstances. This is partly due to the delays that followed the Assassin’s Creed: Shadows launch, before which the much anticipated (and rumored) Assassin’s Creed ****** Flag remake was meant to have launched. The remake was codenamed Obsidian, and was expected to have launched sometime in November 2025. Information surrounding the remake has been rather scarce, but Insider Gaming seems to have gotten hold of concrete information that points to a very complete version of the game being in existence. Now, as a part of its attempt to revamp the entire lineup of Assassin’s Creed tiles, Ubisoft has decided to focus on releasing a total of 10 AC titles over the course of 5 years – of varying length. This also includes mobile-only spinoffs such as Assassin’s Creed *****, which is also expected to be released in 2025. The mail shared with Insider Gaming also mentioned that as a result of the Shadows delay, the rest of the games present within the pipeline were also affected. How many such games are affected remains to be seen, however. An Assassin’s Creed ****** Flag remake is in the works | Image Credit: Ubisoft Either way, Ubisoft’s move can only be described as being entirely bizarre. It should be noted that Assassin’s Creed Shadows recently had a closed premiere, which left mixed reactions from the crowd – not exactly something Ubisoft might have been looking forward to. As it stands right now, banking on Shadows‘ success (given its ‘controversy’) might come to haunt Ubisoft in the end, and instead of reviving other, popular classic franchises they have chosen to double down on the mainstream but tiring franchise instead. After all, releasing 10 games in a span of 5 years is an insane move, and quality is sure to be affected. Ubisoft needs to focus on other IPs and priorities instead Ubisoft might do well to bank on nostalgia | Image Credit: Ubisoft While there is no doubt that Assassin’s Creed is the most profitable franchise for Ubisoft, the publisher has always had a remarkable portfolio of games, even prior to AC. Instead of banking everything on the franchise, Ubisoft could do better by bringing classic franchises back to life. After all, we live in an age of remakes and remasters, which makes for some easy money. Ubisoft should capitalize on this nostalgia and give the fans what they really want – and earn their goodwill in the process. Additionally, Ubisoft should really focus on taking a long, hard look at its current circumstances – and perhaps consider revamping its development and gameplay patterns. Their games have fallen into the sludge of mediocrity and repetition, and perhaps a delay or two might be in their best interests. It’s always sad to see your once favorite publishers slump, but there is still hope that they might manage to bounce back again. 11. Tragic Cause of Death for Netflix Star Who Was Just 24 Tragic Cause of Death for Netflix Star Who Was Just 24 The Korean actor, Kim Sae-ron, who committed suicide Sunday, was subjected to a “giant squid game” in Korea after she was cancelled when she drunkenly crashed a car she was driving in 2022, a leading expert on Korean suicide has said. Kim first appeared on screens at the age of 9 in the 2010 action movie The Man from Nowhere, and seemed set to have a glowing career as an actor, but her career was dramatically derailed after a drunken car ****** in May 2022. She hit an item of electrical infrastructure, causing a widespread but temporary power outage, which garnered particular attention as it caused some traffic lights and payment systems to fail. Nobody was badly hurt, but Kim was publicly shamed and remorselessly trolled following the incident, and ultimately forced into hiding. She subsequently quit acting, and sought work waitressing tables to make ends meet. She was seen again on screens in 2023 with Bloodhounds, but her scenes had all been shot before the ******. Peter Jongo Na, a Korean-born professor of psychiatry at Yale, who has specialized in researching and preventing suicide in Korea, which has the highest suicide rate among OECD countries, posted on Facebook: “A society that buries people without giving them a chance to recover just because they did something wrong is not a healthy society. Our society, which abandons people who make mistakes or fall behind and moves on as if nothing happened, is like a giant squid game.” He added: “I don’t often talk about individuals. The death of a person is the result of a combination of socioeconomic, psychological, and biological factors. However, I can’t help but think that actress Kim Sae-ron’s death was a death driven to the edge of a cliff.” The professor said, “The last time I saw news about her was an article about her having a hard time making ends meet, and she was working part-time. I remember seeing all kinds of malicious comments not only in the article, but also in the cafe where she worked. How many lives have to be lost before they stop inflicting destructive shame without giving anyone a chance to breathe? This is a time when we need social dialogue and reflection. I hope the deceased rests in peace. My heart aches so much.” Kim was found by a friend on Sunday at her home in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. She did not leave a note and there were no “signs of foul play,” reports said. One official cited by the Yonhap news agency said: “We believe she made an extreme choice and plan to handle it as a suicide.” Online commentators have drawn comparisons with the 2023 suicide of 25 year old K-pop star Moonbin. 14. BDCA women’s: Marist stun Colts with 64-run preliminary final win to seal grand final place BDCA women’s: Marist stun Colts with 64-run preliminary final win to seal grand final place Marist have come from last position on the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association women’s first-grade ladder to seal a grand final place, beating Colts by 64 runs in the preliminary final at Bunbury Recreation Ground on Sunday. The Blues finished their innings on 7-168 before showing their strength with the ball. They bowled Colts out for 104 in an innings that never had the target under threat. Marist finished the four-team competition’s home and away season in fourth place on the ladder having won only three of their 12 games but still progressed to the finals and will now face off against Leschenualt in the season decider. Meanwhile, the result will see Colts’ wait for a flag in the top women’s competition — which they have participated in every season of — extend into another season. The Blues’ brilliant batting effort was the sum of efforts from an even spread of contributors, with six of their nine batters making double-digit scores. After starting in circumspect fashion, Zoe Buck (23 from 40 ******) and Jess Clarke (12 from 31 ******) got their innings away with a 44-run opening stand. Gabrielle House (26 from 26 ******) and Ava Dodds (17 from 21 ******) took up the mantle after the departure of the openers while also upping the run rate through the middle overs. At the back end of the innings, Holly Bilcich (26 from 35 ******) and Nargis Madadi (16 not out from 18 ******) took over to further bolster Marist’s total. Brittany Wilson (2-35 from six overs) was Colts’ only multiple wicket-taker, being on a hat-trick in the penultimate over after knocking over Bilcich and Madison Steer in consecutive deliveries. Young all-rounder Addison Hall was her side’s most economical bowler, taking 1-15 from six overs. With the ball, the Blues’ opening pair of Quinn Newton and Dodds conceded only seven runs in the first six overs. Dodds also claimed the first wicket of the second innings when Colts had only one run on the board, bowling Leisa Norrish without scoring. No.3 Matilda Thomas looked in good touch before slashing to House at point off the bowling of Kayleigh ****** (2-17 from six overs) and the hosts slipped further into the mire when Hall top-edged Madadi (2-20 from six overs) to Buck behind the stumps. As the wickets continued to tumble, veteran Shani Waugh stood tall, top-scoring with 22 from 31 ******, but Colts could not keep pace with a required run rate approaching 10 per over. Dodds returned at the back-end of the game and ended it by claiming another wicket, giving her brilliant figures of 2-3 from 4.5 overs. 18. Mauritius ex-PM out on bail after being charged with money laundering Mauritius ex-PM out on bail after being charged with money laundering Mauritius’ former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has been released on bail following his dramatic arrest on Saturday on money laundering charges. He had been detained along with three others after the anti-corruption agency said it had seized suitcases of cash and luxury watches in raids on 10 locations, including Jugnauth’s home. The former prime minister’s lawyer said he denied the charges against him. Jugnauth’s arrest came 100 days after his landslide defeat in elections, with his successor Navin Ramgoolam vowing to root out corruption. But few Mauritians expected the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) to move so quickly, or to arrest the former prime minister on such serious charges. Some people took to the streets of the capital, Port Louis, to celebrate by lighting firecrackers, while a handful of his supporters turned up outside court on Monday to show their solidarity with him, chanting: “Pravin! Pravin!” His wife Kobita – who is not facing the charges – was released after being questioned for hours by investigators on Saturday. Her 63-year-old husband spent the night in a detention centre, before a magistrate granted him bail late on Sunday, setting it at $32,000 (£26,000). Jugnauth’s co-accused – two prominent businesspeople and a deputy mayor – are still in detention, pending the outcome of their bail applications. Their lawyers have not yet commented on the charges against them. About $2.4m in local and foreign currencies – including US dollars, euros and UAE dirhams – were seized during the raids, FCC spokesperson Ibrahim Rossaye said. Seven luxury watches, including five high-end Cartier timepieces, were also confiscated, he added. As part of his bail conditions, Jugnauth has been ordered not to contact witnesses or to interfere with them. He must also stay at a fixed address and must inform the police if he decides to relocate. Jugnauth was the prime minister from 2017 to 2024 and is a member of one of the dynasties that has dominated politics in Mauritius. Jugnauth oversaw a historic deal with *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the future of the Chagos Islands. The agreement aims to settle the long-standing sovereignty dispute over the islands, but his successor has accused him of negotiating a bad deal and has reopened talks. 19. EA’s 2nd Worst Battlefield Game After 2042 Was a Disaster Because It Thought Microtransactions Are Cool EA’s 2nd Worst Battlefield Game After 2042 Was a Disaster Because It Thought Microtransactions Are Cool Battlefield Mobile, the free-to-play mobile version of Industrial Toys’ multiplayer shooter, was eventually shut down in January 2023. After beta testing the game in a few locations in November 2022, it was abandoned. The announcement was included in EA’s Q3 2023 financial results, along with the news that Star Wars: Jedi Survivor would be delayed and Apex Legends Mobile would be canceled. Battlefield Mobile was canceled in 2023. | Credit: Electronic Arts. Like Apex Legends Mobile, Battlefield Mobile was designed to run separately from its console and PC counterparts, meaning it would not support cross-play or cross-progression. It would also come with unique cosmetics, battle pass seasons, and rewards. However, the money-minded mentality of jagging cash from the fans through the microtransactions actually made the game a disaster. Battlefield Mobile never did proper justice to its franchise This game was heavily reliant on microtransactions. | Credit: Electronic Arts. Though it was criticized for feeling like a diluted version of the main games, Battlefield Mobile sought to bring the franchise to mobile devices. Because of the microtransactions, shallow mechanics, and bland design, many people thought it was more of a “cash grab” than a complete experience. As it lacked the main series’ refined mechanics and strategic depth, the game was a subpar representation of the franchise and as a result, was canceled even before its actual release. EA’s initial view of capitalizing on the craze of mobile games seemed to be working out for the company pretty well. But making the microtransactions the main focus was a bad idea. A mobile game doesn’t run only on in-game cosmetics and weapon skins. It would have been a blast like PUBG Mobile if EA could have transcended the typical franchise experience into mobile devices. But it felt as if the company thought people would prioritize a costume over a quality gaming experience. And as the console giants lean more into making handheld consoles, with the mobile version of the game, EA would never have needed to look back for this franchise. Battlefield 2024‘s failure paved the way for the cancellation of Battlefield Mobile Battlefield 2042‘s poor reception added more fuel to the fire. | Credit: Electronic Arts. The unfavorable reception to Battlefield 2042 led EA to halt and reconsider its future plans for the series, according to Alex Seropian, who co-founded Bungie in 1991 and Industrial Toys in 2012. Seropian claims that at first, there was a lot of hope for Battlefield Mobile‘s development because it was viewed as a promising project at a time when the shooter genre was expanding and because it was developed by a talented team and based on a well-known IP. However, after the release of Battlefield 2042, everything changed for the studio. Seropian stated (via Mobilegamer.biz): Battlefield 2042 came out, and the community reaction to 2042 was not good. That cascaded a bunch of introspection. Additionally, Apple changed its IDFA regulations, which led to much higher user acquisition expenses. As a result of this change, organic growth decreased and paid distribution costs significantly increased. Furthermore, Apex Legends Mobile was released, and according to Seropian, the three of these factors combined to make it harder to convince Industrial Toys’ owner, EA, to keep funding Battlefield Mobile. 21. Dominion, the classic board game app, launches new anniversary update Dominion, the classic board game app, launches new anniversary update Dominion, the app-based adaptation of the classic board game, is getting an anniversary update This adds in single-player campaigns with distinctive themes Explore the mechanics of each expansion, or dig into the Grand Campaign It’s a strange thing that in certain areas, like gaming, you can be the progenitor of many top releases and still be relatively unknown. Such is the case with Dominion, a medieval-themed deck builder widely regarded as originating the whole darned genre. And now, its mobile version is receiving a major new anniversary update with some intriguing digital-exclusive features! While up until now Dominion has faithfully recreated the board game itself, this new update adds a major game-changer with Campaigns. As you might expect from the name this lets you play out single-player, linked campaigns to duke it out with AI opponents as you would in other releases. These Campaigns also come in two distinctive flavours. The first is that of the Expansion Campaigns which respectively focus on each mechanic introduced in the board games’ expansions. Meanwhile, Grand Campaign (as will be familiar to Total War players) offers a randomised and infinitely replayable experience with adventures generated around a single theme. Dominating! While board game apps may be a niche within a niche for mobile, I think it’s good to see them receiving further support. Dominion’s new update also looks to focus on long-term support which means that even if you don’t have folks around to play the regular version with, you can still enjoy long-term campaign-level play at your leisure! It’s especially heartening to see a niche product like Dominion receive long-term support, so here’s hoping that we’ll see even more additions to its beefy lineup of expansions and features in the near future! In the meantime though, if you’re looking to expand your repertoire of great board games on mobile, why not check in on some of our recommendations? 22. United Nations judge forced woman to work as slave, court told United Nations judge forced woman to work as slave, court told A United Nations judge deceived a young woman into coming to the *** to work as her slave while she studied at the University of Oxford, a court has heard. Lydia Mugambe is accused of taking “advantage of her status” over her alleged victim in the “most egregious way”. It is alleged she prevented the young Ugandan woman from holding down steady employment and forced her to work as her maid and to provide childcare for free. Ms Mugambe denies the four charges against her. Prosecutors allege that from the outset, Ms Mugambe, who is also a High Court judge in Uganda, had the intention of “obtaining someone to make her life easier and at the least possible cost to herself”. She is accused of engaging in “******** folly” with Ugandan deputy high commissioner John Leonard Mugerwa in which they conspired to arrange for the young woman to come to the ***. The pair are alleged to have participated in a “very dishonest” trade-off, in which Mr Mugerwa allegedly arranged for the Ugandan High Commission to sponsor the woman’s entrance into the *** in exchange for Ms Mugambe attempting to speak to a judge who was in charge of legal action Mr Mugerwa was named in. Ms Mugambe is also accused of arranging the alleged victim’s travel “with a view to her being exploited”, and of attempting to “intimidate” her alleged victim into dropping the case. Oxford Crown Court heard the defendant had previously told police she had “diplomatic immunity” and could not be arrested due to her work as a judge in Uganda and at the UN. Jurors were told the Metropolitan Police’s diplomatic team was contacted and confirmed Mugambe had no registered diplomatic immunity in the ***. According to her UN profile page, Ms Mugambe was appointed to the body’s judicial roster in May 2023 – three months after police were called to her address in Oxfordshire. Opening the case on Monday, Caroline Haughey KC said Ms Mugambe “took advantage of her status over [her alleged victim] in a most egregious way”. “Ms Mugambe used her knowledge, and her power, to deceive [her alleged victim] into coming to the ***, taking advantage of her naivety to induce and deceive her into working for her for nothing. She added that the judge, who had been studying for a PhD in law, had “created a situation where [her alleged victim] was deprived of the opportunity to support herself”. The trial, expected to last three weeks, continues. 25. The RTX 5070 Ti sounds great, but I’m still worried about it The RTX 5070 Ti sounds great, but I’m still worried about it Table of Contents Table of Contents Promising benchmarks — well, kind of ‘Paper launch’ woes AMD is right around the corner Bye-bye, RTX 5080? Nvidia’s RTX 5070 Ti is mere days away. Set to launch on February 20, the GPU marks the beginning of Nvidia’s mainstream RTX 50-series. With similar specs to the RTX 5080, the RTX 5070 Ti has every chance to rank high among the best graphics cards — but it’s also going to face a number of obstacles that might impact its success. Thanks to some leaked benchmarks, we now have a better idea of how the card might perform, and that rough ballpark is really a bit of a mixed bag. Here’s why I think the RTX 5070 Ti might have an uphill climb when it first hits the shelves, but also why it might completely displace the RTX 5080. Promising benchmarks — well, kind of Nvidia When Nvidia first announced the RTX 5070 Ti, it promised an up to 2x uplift over the RTX 4070 Ti. Of course, these scores had to be taken with a huge grain of salt, what with the Multi Frame Generation tech that gives DLSS 4, and consequently the RTX 50-series, a major boost. The real difference in performance was bound to be different — a fact that was quickly proven by the reviews of the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080. Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming Don’t get me wrong: Both of those GPUs are faster than their last-gen counterparts, no questions asked. However, it’s not quite the amazing “twice as fast” boost that Nvidia promised during its announcement. The RTX 5090, while undoubtedly a beastly card, is only around 30% faster than the RTX 4090. While that’s still a solid uplift, it’s not quite the eye-watering 80% difference that we witnessed going from the RTX 3090 to the RTX 4090. Meanwhile, the RTX 5080 came with its own disappointments. Many hoped that it’d beat the last-gen RTX 4090, but it failed to meet that mark. It’s around 18% faster than the RTX 4080 Super, which is a solid result, but again — not groundbreaking. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Based on the leaked benchmark scores shared by VideoCardz just days of the review embargo being lifted, it looks like the RTX 5070 Ti is doomed to share the same fate. Obligatory disclaimer: We’re dealing with benchmarks from a single source, and more importantly, from synthetic tests. The scores come from 3DMark, which is a solid way to test a GPU, but doesn’t tell us much about its gaming performance. Seeing as gaming is what matters the most in a card such as this, we’re still yet to see the juicy parts. WhyCry / VideoCardz With that out of the way, let’s dig in. According to scores shared by VideoCardz coming from unknown sources, the RTX 5070 Ti is 16.6% faster than the RTX 4070 Ti Super. This isn’t an outstanding result, but comparing it to the RTX 4070 Ti would likely give us something over 20%, which falls in line with what we’d expect from a new generation of GPUs. These days, Nvidia saves the big gen-on-gen gains for the flagship, and that’s just a reality that we all have to live with. The more interesting tidbit is that the RTX 5070 Ti is only about 13.2% slower than the RTX 5080, all the while being 33% cheaper. I expected as much, as the cards have fairly similar specs outside of the RTX 5070 Ti sporting fewer CUDA cores. The memory interface is almost the same, although the RTX 5070 Ti was given slower 28Gbps memory modules, but both have 16GB VRAM. At $250 cheaper and just 13% slower, the RTX 5070 Ti sounds like a no-brainer when compared to the RTX 5080. Unfortunately, it’s really not all that simple. ‘Paper launch’ woes Jacob ****** / Digital Trends In theory, Nvidia’s RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launched on January 30. Yes, in theory, because the reality is that most people still haven’t been able to get their hands on one of the new cards. Three days before the launch, hopeful shoppers were already camping outside of various retailers in order to try and score a new GPU. Good thinking, too, because it’s long been rumored that the RTX 5090 would be in highly limited supply. This pushed some retailers to host lotteries for a chance to buy the GPU — one of which has ended in screams and destroyed property. Although the RTX 5090 appears to be the most impacted, the RTX 5080 is not doing any better. The cards are hard to come by unless you’re willing to pay scalper premiums (to which I say, please don’t). Both the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 are nowhere to be found on Amazon outside of prebuilt PCs made by largely unknown builders. Unfortunately, the RTX 5070 Ti might share the very same fate. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known market analyst, revealed that the RTX 5070 and the RTX 5060 will sell out in seconds due to the limited stock and increased demand. Some leakers disagree, with MEGAsizeGPU on X stating that the supply of the RTX 5090 will be “stupidly high” soon enough. I’ll believe it when I see it, though. Right now, market conditions are harsh, and I worry that the RTX 5070 Ti will suffer from the same problems that currently plague its more powerful siblings. Availability is just one part of the puzzle — the pricing is another. The RTX 5070 Ti will not appear in Nvidia’s Founders Edition, which is guaranteed to launch at the recommended list price (MSRP). This means that the pricing of the card falls entirely to Nvidia’s partners, and while some are bound to launch at $750, many models will cost way more. Early leaks show some of the GPUs priced at up to $1,200, and with the RTX 5080 largely sold out, there’s nothing there to stop the prices from rising. We might end up in a situation where the RTX 5070 Ti is scarcely available at launch, but also very expensive from the get-go. That performance per dollar comparison I brought up earlier only holds true if both the RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5080 are sold at MSRP, and that’s not something we can expect to happen right now. AMD is right around the corner TechPowerUp / Gigabyte Shortages and price hikes are just one side of the coin. Nvidia has one more thing to worry about — AMD. Team Red will soon announce its upcoming GPU, and if priced correctly, the RX 9070 XT could truly shake things up. In all likelihood, the new GPU won’t have quite enough juice to outperform the RTX 5070 Ti; this is especially true when we factor in Multi Frame Generation. But, as we all know, there’s more to the success of a graphics card than just raw performance, and in that regard, AMD might be competitive. Performance-wise, the RX 9070 XT is expected to be at around the level of the RTX 4070 Ti and will therefore likely fall between the RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5070. However, it’s hard to judge how big a dent it’ll make in the sales of Nvidia’s RTX 5070 Ti, and that’s because AMD has kept everything very hush-hush. David McAfee / AMD AMD is said to be planning an “aggressive” pricing strategy for the RX 9000 series. Personally, I’m not sure what to think at this stage. We’ve seen leaks of the RX 9070 XT being priced at $500 (which would indeed be pretty great), but also signs of it costing up to $900. I’m keeping my expectations low to avoid disappointment. With limited availability on Nvidia’s part, all AMD really needs to do is make its new GPUs a little bit cheaper and offer better stock levels for them to sell well. However, for a card to truly be a hit, it’d need to be both solid performance-wise and priced with the consumer in mind. Undercutting Nvidia is one thing; making a card that offers good performance per dollar is another. The RX 9070 XT is a potential threat to the RTX 5070 Ti, but it’s too early to judge how this will play out — too many moving parts. Bye-bye, RTX 5080? Jacob ****** / Digital Trends Nvidia’s RTX 5070 Ti might truly have what it takes to displace the RTX 5080 and take its place in the market, but there are a lot of things that would need to go well for the GPU to be a success. One: Gaming benchmarks. If the RTX 5070 Ti fails to deliver a meaningful gen-on-gen improvement, it’s bound to struggle. The RTX 5070 will always be a more popular choice, and if the 5070 Ti doesn’t impress, many may choose to settle for the $550 GPU instead. Two: Availability, both in general and at MSRP. Most people won’t want to pay $900 and more for an overclocked RTX 5070 Ti. Low stock levels create scarcity, but that doesn’t change the fact that many gamers may not buy this GPU if the pricing doesn’t add up. Three: AMD. If AMD’s RX 9070 XT scores favorable reviews and is and priced well, Nvidia’s RTX 5070 Ti may struggle, especially if the other two issues also turn out to be real. So, what’s it going to be: A smash hit that replaces the RTX 5080 or a GPU that most of us will choose to skip? We’ll find out in just a few days when the first reviews of the RTX 5070 Ti drop. Right now, anything could happen. Source link #RTX #sounds #great #worried Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
