  2. ‘Significant’ snow storm could bring 8-12 inches, hazardous conditions to Hampton Roads ‘Significant’ snow storm could bring 8-12 inches, hazardous conditions to Hampton Roads One of the biggest one-day snowfalls on record in Hampton Roads could happen this week. Jeff Orrock, meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service in Wakefield, said a “significant” winter storm is moving into the area Wednesday and Thursday. While no one knows exactly where that much snow could fall, current estimates say areas south of Interstate 64 and east of Interstate 95 are of particular interest. “The storm is literally going to develop right in our backyard, and it’s just going to pump the snow right here,” Orrock said. A winter storm watch is in effect for Hampton Roads, northeastern North Carolina and parts of the Eastern Shore Wednesday morning through Wednesday night, according to the weather service. Heavy mixed precipitation is possible with total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches expected. Wind gusts could be as high as 35 mph, according to a Monday afternoon update. The weather service is warning hazardous conditions could make travel difficult Wednesday. As of Monday evening, estimates call for 8 to 12 inches of snow from Williamsburg to Norfolk, extending into North Carolina. It is likely that much of the area will see at least 4 inches of snow, with the highest probabilities of more than 6 inches focused around Hampton Roads and eastern Virginia, according to the weather service. The all-time single day record was set in February 1989 with 13.6 inches of snow, according to Norfolk climate data. Orrock said the storm is a nor’easter coming in from Jacksonville combining with another storm moving across the Midwest this week. “Wind speeds are anywhere from, you know, 20 to almost 30 miles per hour, depending on where you are,” he said Monday. “You can expect zero visibility, almost white-out conditions, especially Wednesday night.” Snow and freezing rain should start to pick up around 4 or 5 p.m., Orrock said. Timing for the storm currently sits at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, but that is likely to change, according to the weather service. Snow will end by Thursday at 9 a.m. Temperatures will remain in the 20s and 30s. Though unclear, timing could cause major issues for travel Wednesday. Snowfall rates could get up to 1.5 to 2 inches per hour, and temperatures staying low could also lead to refreezing, Orrock said, prolonging snow’s egffects long after the storm has moved on. “It’s probably going to come in pretty quickly on Wednesday,” Orrock said. “As far as work times, people go to work, it’s not going to be snowing early in the morning. By lunchtime, it could be snowing pretty good.” High winds could stick around until Friday. Orrock said that may bring blowing snow, especially in areas that receive more than 6 inches. 8. Nikos Kazantzakis: The Greatest Greek Writer of the 20th Century Nikos Kazantzakis: The Greatest Greek Writer of the 20th Century Nikos Kazantzakis writing. Credit: Public Domain Nikos Kazantzakis (18 February 1883 – 26 October 1957) is considered by many to be the greatest Greek writer of the 20th century. His books have been translated more than those of his contemporaries. The Cretan man’s literary genius was recognized posthumously after his book Zorba the Greek was made into an award-winning film in 1964. If Kazantzakis’ work is to be described in one word, it would be a Greek word, of course, and that is pathos. The writing of the great writer is passionate, raw, rebellious, unpredictable, and often mystical—much like Crete itself. His life was as exciting as his books. He was a novelist, poet, playwright, journalist, philosopher, and politician, and he lived in several European cities. Early life of the great Cretan Nikos Kazantzakis was born on February 18, 1883, in Heraklion, Crete, which at that time was still part of the Ottoman Empire. His father, Michalis, was a trader in agricultural products and came from Varvaroi, where the Kazantzakis Museum is located today. After completing his high school studies in his hometown and Naxos in 1902, he moved to Athens to study Law. In 1906, he appeared for the first time in Greek letters with the essay “The Disease of the Century” and his first novel Ofis and Krinos. In 1907, Kazantzakis began his postgraduate studies in law in Paris. At the same time, he attended lectures by existentialist philosopher Henri Bergson and studied Friedrich Nietzsche’s work. Both philosophers exerted a tremendous influence on him for the rest of his life. In the same year, he began his journalistic career and became interested in Freemasonry; he was soon to be initiated into that group. In 1909, upon his return to Greece, Kazantzakis published his doctoral dissertation, called “Frederick Nietzsche in the Philosophy of Law and the State.” At the time, he was earning a living translating books and lived with his compatriot intellectual, Galatia Alexiou, whom he later married. The writer participated in the movement for the establishment of the Educational Club, the most important pressure group for the establishment of demotic Greek in education. In 1914, he became friends with the poet Angelos Sikelianos. Together, they traveled to Mount Athos, where they stayed for about forty days while touring many other parts of Greece. During this *******, he was introduced to the work of Dante, whom he described as one of his teachers, along with Homer and Henri Bergson, in his diaries. He and Sikelianos even dreamed of creating a new religion. In October 1916, Kazantzakis took his first business step. He traveled to Thessaloniki to sign a contract for the collection of timber from Mount Athos. The next year, he tried to exploit a lignite mine in the Peloponnese and hired a worker named Georgios Zorbas. Their acquaintance was the inspiration for the novel Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas. In 1918, Kazantzakis met and fell in love with Elli Lampridi, a brilliant educator, philosopher, and active feminist. The restless mind of Nikos Kazantzakis From early on in his youth, Kazantzakis’ soul was restless. He was tormented by anxiety and metaphysical and existential agony, as the scholars of his work emphasize. Religious concerns haunted the mind of the unbelieving Nietzschean thinker. He especially dwelled on the figure of Christ, “this union, so mysterious and so real, this union of man and God,” he observed. This union followed Kazantzakis throughout his life as an obsession, evidenced by his writing until the end. He was also fascinated by the lives of saints. During a break from writing, Kazantzakis became involved in politics. Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos appointed him General Director of the Ministry of Health in 1919 with the mission of repatriating Greeks from the Caucasus region. The experience was used much later in the novel Christ Recrucified (know as The Greek Passion in the U.S.) with the theme being a representation of the Passion of Christ in a Greek village. The following year, after the defeat of Venizelos’ Liberal Party in the election, Kazantzakis left the Ministry of Health and made several trips to Europe, starting his own Odyssey around the world. In 1922 he visited Vienna, where he discovered the work of Sigmund Freud work and Buddhism. He also visited Germany, while in 1924 he stayed for three months in Italy. In Berlin, Kazantzakis was introduced to ********** ideas and became an admirer of Vladimir Lenin. Yet he never became a loyal **********. At that time his nationalist ideals were replaced by a more internationalist ideology. During the 1923-1926 ******* he also made several journalistic trips to the Soviet Union, Palestine, Cyprus and Spain, where he met dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera. During that *******, he worked as a correspondent for the newspapers Eleftheros Logos and Kathimerini. In 1924, Kazantzakis met Eleni Samiou and divorced his wife, Galatia, in 1926. In May of 1927, he isolated himself on Aegina Island in order to complete his most ambitious work, The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel, an epic poem in the style of Homer’s Odyssey. In the same year, he started the anthology of his travel articles for the publication of the first volume (Traveling) while the magazine of Dimitris Glinos, called Renaissance, published his philosophical work Asceticism. The latter is one of the most important texts of Kazantzakis and one in which he expresses his metaphysical beliefs. He considered Asceticism as the seed of all his later work. On January 11, 1928, he he gave a speech in Athens about the Soviet Union, praising the Soviet model. Both Kazantzakis and co-organizer Dimitrios Glinos were prosecuted for organizing the speech at the Alhambra Theater, which ended in an open demonstration, but their trial was never held. In April, Kazantzakis returned to Russia, where he completed a screenplay on the Russian Revolution. In May of 1929, he isolated himself on a farm in Czechoslovakia, where he completed the novels Toda Raba and Kapetan Elias, a forerunner of Captain Michael. Both works were written in French. Nikos Kazantzakis in later life. Credit: Nikos Kazantzakis Museum These works were part of Kazantzakis’s effort to gain international recognition as a writer. Toda Raba was released under the pseudonym Nikolai Kazan. In 1931, Kazantzakis returned to Greece and settled in Aegina once again, where he undertook the writing of a French-Greek dictionary in order to cover his living expenses. At the same time, he translated Dante’s Divine Comedy and wrote some of the odes that were later incorporated into Tertsines (1960). In 1935, he traveled to Japan and China, enriching his travel texts while as a correspondent for Kathimerini he covered the Spanish Civil War (1936). In 1938, Kazantzakis completed The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel, consisting of a total of 33,333 verses and 24 rhapsodies. Kazantzakis spent almost fourteen years working on its completion after he revised it eight times. The poem begins with the return of Odysseus to Ithaca, an unsatisfied hero who was still wandering, trying to achieve “full freedom.” Kazantzakis wanted to write an epic of modern man, so he considered the Odyssey as his most important work. At the same time, many of his texts were published in newspapers and magazines, and he wrote Le Jardin des Rochers (otherwise known as The Rock Garden) in French, drawing on his recent experiences in the Far East. During the ******* occupation of Greece (1941-1944), Kazantzakis remained in Aegina and collaborated with Ioannis Kakridis for the translation of Homer’s Iliad. After the Germans left, Kazantzakis became intensely active in Greek political life. He was president of the Socialist Workers’ Movement while he was a minister without portfolio in the government of Themistoklis Sofoulis from November 26, 1945 to January 11, 1946. In November 1945, he married his partner, Eleni Samiou. In 1946, the Society of Greek Writers nominated Kazantzakis, along with Angelos Sikelianos, for the Nobel Prize. However, his candidacy was fought against by conservative politicians and writers. The following year, however, he was appointed to UNESCO, undertaking the task of promoting the translation of classic literary works with the ultimate goal of bridging different cultures. Kazantzakis resigned in 1948 in order to dedicate himself to his literary work. For this purpose, he settled in Antibes, France where, in the following years, he had a particularly productive *******. In 1952, he contracted an eye infection, which forced him to be treated first in the Netherlands and later in Paris, but he eventually lost sight in his right eye. While Kazantzakis was living in Antibes, the Greek Orthodox Church was trying to oust him from its ranks. He was accused of blasphemy in excerpts from Kapetan Michalis (Captain Michael), an autobiographical novel about Heraklion in his childhood. Kazantzakis and Zorba the Greek In early 1954, his novel Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas was published in France, earning the title of best foreign book of that year. The book refers to the friendship of an intellectual with a man who explores his more primitive instincts but who is full of a thirst for life. Zorba’s character is the personification of the Bergonian idea of the ”animal impulse.” The Zorba character is full of contradictions. At one moment, he is a child-like man while he carries a hard to define lay wisdom the very next moment. One day, Zorba seems worn out by age while, the next day, he is a sprightly man ready to dance and womanize. The narrator likens Zorba to God, the ******, Buddha, and Zeus, or all these together. All these traits appeared in Kazantzakis’ life, as well, during stages of the writer’s life. Yet, “Zorba” is not autobiographical as is easy to believe. It is as complex as the writer’s life, bouncing between the human and the divine. In 1964, a film adaptation of the novel directed by Mihalis Kakogiannis and starring Anthony Quinn won three Academy Awards and had four nominations. At the same time, the movie introduced Kazantzakis to a wide audience. The Last Temptation of Christ Kazantzakis’ book, The Last Temptation of Christ, ended up being one of the most controversial books of all time, often appearing on “banned book” lists. The Last Temptation of Christ, a novel in which Christ struggles between his divine and human nature, infuriated the Church even though it had not been published in Greece yet. Kazantzakis responded to the aphorism of the Church in a letter: “You have given me a curse, Holy Fathers, I respond to you with a wish: I wish you that your conscience is as pure as mine and you to be as moral and religious as I am. ” In the end, the Church of Greece did not dare to proceed with the excommunication of Nikos Kazantzakis, as Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras was opposed to such an act. In 1954, Pope Pius XII himself placed the book on the “Roman Catholic Index of Forbidden Books,” the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, In response, Kazantzakis telegraphed the ******** personally, using a phrase from the Christian apologist Tertullian: “Ad tuum, Domine, tribunal appello.” The phrase means “I lodge my appeal at your tribunal, Lord.” Kazantzakis was telling the Catholic Church that God will be his final judge—not a worldly institution like the Church. Later scholars dismissed the idea that Kazantzakis was being sacrilegious or blasphemous in writing these books. On the contrary, the struggle to understand the tie between the human and the divine and the doubts created, strengthen one’s belief rather than make them a non-believer. The official condemnation from both the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches, prompted a writer of the era to remark that it was the “first time since 1054 that the two Churches had agreed on anything.” Controversy followed again more than three decades later when Martin Scorsese made the book into a film in 1988. A protest against the film from Christians in the United States spread quickly throughout the world. The film was banned outright in more than a dozen nations, including Turkey, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, the Philippines, and Singapore. In Paris, a cinema which refused to give in to protestors to cancel the premiere was torched by Christian demonstrators. Final years, Nobel Nomination, and passing In 1955, Kazantzakis undertook the publication of the translation of the “Iliad,” while in the same year, “The Last Temptation of Christ” was finally published in Greece. In 1955 Kazantzakis also began writing his work “Report on Greco” in Lugano, Switzerland. The book was actually his intellectual autobiography. After a second trip to China, at the invitation of the ******** government, he returned to Europe sick and was hospitalized in Copenhagen and Freiburg. In 1957, Kazantzakis lost the Nobel Prize for Literature to Albert Camus by one vote. Camus later said that Kazantzakis deserved the honor “a hundred times more” than himself. The Greek writer would be nominated for the Nobel a total of nine times. Kazantzakis died on October 26, 1957, at the age of 74. His body was transported to Athens, but the Church of Greece refused to allow an open casket ******** ceremony. His body was transported to the Heraklion Metropolitan Church of Heraklion where the ******** took place with an open casket for a last farewell, but no liturgy. Kazantzakis’ compatriots honored him and buried him in a bastion of the Venetian castle walls of Heraklion. On his grave, there is the inscription: “I hope for nothing. I’m not afraid of anything. I am free”. Kazantzakis’ tombstone. Credit: Frente/Wikipedia Nikos Kazantzakis’ famous quotes “Now I know. I hope for nothing, I am not afraid of anything, I have been relieved from the mind and from the heart, I ascended higher, I am free. That’s what I want. I do not want anything else. ” “What never happened is what we never longed for enough.” “Our life is but a lightning … but we still have time.” “To die every day. To be born every day. Το renounce what you have every day.” “Unfortunate man, you can move mountains, perform miracles, while you wallow in the dung, laziness and infidelity! You have God inside you, you carry God in you and you do not know it – you only find out when you die, but it is too late.” “The right way is the uphill way.” “We come from a dark abyss; we end up in a dark abyss; the light in between we call Life.” “You must love people because it is you.” “The woman’s body is a cliff full of flowers.” “Salvation means to be saved from all saviors; this is the highest freedom, the highest, where man breathes with difficulty. Can you stand it?” “The four pillars of this world: bread, wine, fire, woman.” “Greece still survives; I think it survives through successive miracles.” “Crete does not want homemakers, she wants madmen. These madmen make her immortal.” Do not stoop down to ask, “Will we win? Will we lose?” Just fight!” “Did I win? Was I defeated? All I know is: I’m full of wounds and standing tall.” “If you can, stare at fear in the eye and fear will get scared and go away.” “As long as there are hungry children, there is no God.” “Happiness is a simple and austere thing – a glass of wine, a chestnut, a small brazier, the roar of the sea. Nothing else” “Every Greek who does not take, even once in his life, a brave decision, betrays his race.” “Eternity is quality, not quantity, this is the big, very simple secret.” “As long as a man does not reach the edge of a cliff, he does not grow wings on his back to fly.” “Isn’t he God? He does whatever he pleases. If he could not do injustices, what power would he have?” “Whatever you wish for, shout it out loud, go wild. Longing and mediocrity don’t go together.” “Life is trouble. Only death is not. Life is when you clench your fists and ask for a fight.” “Reach everywhere that you can’t reach!” “There is no heavier punishment than this: To respond to evil with kindness.” “The greatest journey we make is within our soul.” “Dignity is not receiving honors but deserving them.” “What is above words? 9. Baby seal found 20 miles from the ocean in downtown New Haven: “Lucky” to be rescued Baby seal found 20 miles from the ocean in downtown New Haven: “Lucky” to be rescued A lost seal found wandering on the streets of New Haven 20 miles from the ocean is safe and recovering, according to the Mystic Aquarium. The baby male gray seal was found on Chapel Street in downtown New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday, Feb. 16. “Mystic Aquarium is pleased to have rescued this misdirected young seal in need of help, and looks forward to hopefully returning the seal back to the ocean in the months ahead,” said Dr. Allison Tuttle, Mystic Aquarium’s Chief Zoological Officer, in a press release. “We are proud to provide marine mammal response, rescue, and rehabilitation for the state of Connecticut, and help marine animals in need.” So far from the ocean, it was a strange place to find the baby marine animal. Where was the seal found in New Haven? The seal was originally spotted near the intersection of Chapel Street and East Street. “Meet the newest addition to the department!” joked the New Haven Police Department on X, including a photo of the seal next to their police car. The Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program rescued the seal and brought it back to the aquarium with support from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the New Haven Police Department. How did the seal get to New Haven? Is the seal ok? The male seal, estimated to be only a few weeks old, wandered from the beach to a “potentially dangerous situation” on the streets of New Haven, according to the Mystic Aquarium. The veterinary team at the aquarium’s clinic found that the seal was lethargic and dehydrated when he was admitted. He weighted just 28 pounds, less than the 35 pounds newborn gray seals typically weigh. The seal was “lucky” to have been rescued, the aquarium said. Newborn seals will usually nurse on high **** milk for three weeks. The clinic has started him on fluid therapy and an individualized treatment plan. They will feed him a dilute fish formula that will provide him with the nutrition he needs to “heal and grow.” “The goal for this seal, along with every other rescued marine mammal and sea turtle patient, is to release the seal back to its ocean home once he is healthy and strong,” Mystic Aquarium said in a press release. What are gray seals? Gray seals are “true seals” with short flippers and no external ear flaps. As adults, they can weigh up to 880 pounds and be up to 10 feet long. Gray seals are found in coastal waters throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. They are federally protected by the marine protection act. Jan Woitas | Picture Alliance | Getty Images 2024 was a strong year for aeolian energy in Germany, with permit awards for onshore wind turbines accelerating, according to industry data — but the upcoming Feb. 23 election means the sector now faces uncertainty, amid vocal skepticism from the two parties leading in the polls. Friedrich Merz, the leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is polling in first place with around 30% of support alongside its affiliate party the CSU, has described wind power as a “transitional technology.” Speaking to public broadcaster ZDF late last year, he said he hoped “ugly” wind turbines could be dismantled eventually, “because they do not fit into the landscape.” The far-right Alternative fuer Deutschland, which is second in national polls and expected to secure around 20% of votes, took the rhetoric even further. The party’s chancellor candidate Alice Weidel has threatened to tear down all wind turbines, which she reportedly labeled as “windmills of shame.” The AfD has called climate change into question and has frequently dismissed actions taken to tackle the environmental crisis. Wind power, a form of renewable energy used to generate electricity, is considered important in the transition away from fossil fuels. Wolf-Peter Schill, an energy economist at the ******* Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), said some of the “wind power-bashing” during the election campaign has been “absurd” at times, particularly from the AfD. “The AfD is, in many respects, a nightmare — also in terms of their wind power takes, but I think it is not super relevant as they will not be in power,” Schill told CNBC over video call. Despite the AfD polling in second place, all other major parties in Germany have so far committed to not entering a coalition government with them, meaning they will likely form part of the opposition after the election. “What the CDU, the conservative party, does is much more relevant, at least for the next government,” Schill noted. Germany’s wind energy expansion Schill cited a recent report from the ******* Wind Energy Association and engineering foundation VDMA Power Systems, which said the country achieved a historic milestone for onshore wind energy in 2024. Europe’s largest economy licensed more than 2,400 onshore wind turbines last year, the report said, representing a combined capacity of more than 14 gigawatts. Contracts awarded for onshore wind turbines also rose to a record high, it added. Dennis Rendschmidt, managing director of VDMA Power Systems, told CNBC that the record figures highlighted the effectiveness of legal changes and political measures implemented in recent years. They also signaled a new dynamic for the sector, he said. “This momentum needs to be kept up by a new federal government,” Rendschmidt added, according to a CNBC translation of emailed comments. The expansion of wind energy must continue without restrictions, he said, as that would lead to lower energy costs, create jobs, secure energy supply and reduce dependence on energy imports. DIW Berlin’s Schill sees few potential hurdles. “All the conditions are really set for future growth,” he said, noting that the only obstacles could emerge if the incoming government slows down the pace of expansion, for either ideological reasons or a lack of understanding of the role wind power will have in energy systems. Giles Dickson, CEO of industry trade group WindEurope, told CNBC that in the likely scenario of a CDU-led government, there should only be a little concern for the sector. “If you’re looking at a CDU-led government, with either the [Social Democratic Party] or the Greens in coalition, or both, then that to us does not represent storm clouds at all,” he said. The party is not neglectful when it comes to climate change and at least does not strongly oppose wind energy, Andreas Reuter, managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES), told CNBC when elaborating on the position of the likely leader of Germany’s new coalition, the CDU/CSU. Although the CDU was previously critical of wind turbines, Reuter said the party would likely deem them “acceptable” for now, as they are broadly reliable and produce cheap energy. Renewable energy challenges While the change in government may not mean that trouble for ******* wind energy is imminent, the new ruling coalition will face challenges when it comes to renewables and wind power. That includes updates to Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act, a ******* law designed to ensure the country can produce 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of the decade, Dickson pointed out. Solar and wind energy are key for these ambitions, as Germany’s efforts towards winning energy from nuclear fusion — which is widely deemed a highly sustainable power source — are still in the research and planning stage. Germany shut off its last remaining traditional nuclear power plants in 2023. The new government will have to work on a new iteration of the law, he said, suggesting that industry bodies will need to keep a close eye on those developments and seek close dialogue with the government to shape changes. The goals Germany currently has for growing its renewable energy production and usage are another area that will involve adjustments. Some of these targets are already “completely unrealistic,” IWES’ Reuter said. That means the government will have to cut its targets or they would miss them each year, he said, noting that the current plans were “aggressive” — but that this was helpful in showing that renewables were a priority and to encourage people to think big and create a positive environment around the issue. “On the other hand, we still have a gap, which is getting ******* and ******* the closer we get to 2030 and the question is, how do we want to fill the gap? When are we going to accept that we’re not going to meet these targets? And this will be again, interesting discussions for the next government,” he said. 16. Google Reportedly Working On a Conversation Summaries Feature for Gemini Live Google Reportedly Working On a Conversation Summaries Feature for Gemini Live Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Gemini Live, which will make it easier to track the conversations users have with the chatbot. As per the report, Google is developing a new conversation summaries button that will convert the two-way voice conversation into a comprehensive paragraph-style report with bullet points. The feature is said to appear once the conversation has ended, however, the implementation of the feature could be changed before the tool is released to the public. Gemini Live’s Conversation Summaries Feature According to an Android Authority report, the Mountain View-based tech giant is working on the conversation summaries feature for the Gemini Live interface. The evidence of the feature was spotted by the publication during an Android application package (APK) teardown process within the Google app beta version 16.6.23. However, the feature is currently not live, and beta testers will not be able to try it out just yet. Based on the screenshots shared by the publication, the new Gemini Live feature appears as a small box on the bottom-left corner of the Gemini app once a conversation has ended. In its current state, the feature just shows a few words of a prompt that can be shared with Gemini by tapping the box. The box button sends a detailed prompt asking Gemini to act as a “highly skilled conversational AI assistant specialising in generating summaries,” as per the screenshots. The prompt also includes instructions for the summary such as “generate a brief, paragraph-style summary”, “create a non-generic title”, and not to include fluff. Once the prompt is shared with Gemini, it generates a comprehensive summary of the entire conversation. As shown in the screenshots, it appears the feature is in its bare-bones form, and will likely not be shipped as such. Android Authority speculated that Google could either automate the process and automatically generate summaries after each conversation, or provide a button in the Gemini Live interface to generate the same. In either case, it is unlikely that users will still see the initial prompt, and it would likely become a backend process. 19. The Polykatoikia: What Makes the Athenian Apartment Building So Unique The Polykatoikia: What Makes the Athenian Apartment Building So Unique At the Goethe Institute, an exhibition based on the book Athens’ Polykatoikias 1930-1975: Formation of a Typology offers a valuable introduction to the growing international dialogue about the phenomenon of the Athenian apartment building, and how Athens managed to get urban living so precisely right. The word Polykatoikia (poly = many/katoikia = dwelling) is quickly becoming a key concept in international architecture. While apartment buildings aren’t unique, the Athenian apartment building is. Athens’ polykatoikias from the 1930s to the 1970s combined modernity with social aspiration and, most notably, an unregulated, democratic approach to urban growth that transcended social strata and incorporated diverse architectural styles. Polyvios Michailidis, Thoukydidis Valentis (1933-34) Polyvios Michailidis, Thoukydidis Valentis (1933-34) Souzana Antonakakis, Dimitris Antonakakis (Atelier 66) 1972-75 Souzana Antonakakis, Dimitris Antonakakis (Atelier 66) 1972-75 The Growing Metropolis Criticizing Athens as an unattractive maze of concrete is a thing of the past. Today, the city is admired globally, with architectural historian Kenneth Frampton calling it a “Modern city par excellence” in his Modern Architecture: A Critical History. At the end of the 19th century, Athens had a population of less than 150,000, but by the 20th century, it exploded, fueled by waves of Greek refugees and a post-war migration from the countryside. What had been a small city of modest single-family homes, except for a handful of grand neoclassical mansions, would undergo rapid transformation, and all without a master plan. Dimitris Fatouros, Konstantinos Michailidis (1955-56) Dimitris Fatouros, Konstantinos Michailidis (1955-56) Athens – a Capital of Style Athens’ Polykatoikias 1930-1975: Formation of a Typology by Kilian Schmitz-Hübsch, richly illustrated with photographs by Dimitris Kleanthis, traces the development of the Athenian apartment building from the Modern Movement of the 1930s through the early postwar experiments and finally through the well-known polykatoikias of the 1960s. The exhibition, featuring images and floor plans of some of the finest and most interesting residential buildings of Athens, opened on February 6th at the Goethe Institute with an introduction by architect Myrto Kiourti. The exhibition will be on view until March 1st. Ms. Kiourti’s talk shed light on Athens’ unique path to modernity. While many cities responded to the post-war housing demand with state-funded projects, the growth of modern Athens was largely driven by small-scale, individual initiatives. With much of the land already privately owned, development of the city was largely in the hands of the people; the state had little to contribute to the equation. Moreover, capital was more evenly distributed, creating a level playing field where homeowners and independent contractors with limited resources could still shape the urban landscape. Works by prominent architects such as Takis Zenetos (the noted building on Herodou Attikou, 1959-61 ), Kyriakoulis Panagiotakos (the “Blue Building” in Exarchia, 1932-33 ), Georges Candilis and Ilias Skroumbelos (another famous building on Herodou Attikou, opposite the Kallimarmaro Stadium), Souzana Antonakakis, and Dimitris Antonakakis (Atelier 66 in Exarchia, 1972-75) set the tone for the modern city while also providing a stylistic blueprint that inspired countless more modest developments. Vasilios Kouremenos (1933-1935) Vasilios Kouremenos (1933-1935) Antiparochi: A City by the People, for the People The construction of contemporary Athens was largely unregulated. It was also largely egalitarian: even owners of quite modest homes were able to take part in the shaping of their city. One of the key factors in this process was the antiparochi system, where homeowners exchanged their property for apartments in newly constructed buildings. This arrangement allowed contractors to build without significant upfront costs, and residents gained modern living spaces with the latest conveniences. Georges Candilis, Ilias Skroumbelos (1965-73) Georges Candilis, Ilias Skroumbelos (1965-73) Takis Zenetos, (1959-61) Takis Zenetos, (1959-61) A Blueprint for Modern Living The desire for modernity shaped Athens’ growth. High-profile apartment buildings, designed by well-known architects, set a tone that many others emulated. “The values of modern architecture, abstraction, simplicity, pure geometry repetition, and basic construction were highly praised by the public. These architectural values made the projects accessible to all. Anyone could copy the initial high-quality projects designed by prominent architects with minimum resources,” according to Kiourti. “Most apartment buildings in Athens were not designed by architects, but by engineers or contractors […] Residents were actively involved in the design process, making this a highly effective model of participatory design that shaped Greek cities from the 1950s onward.” Kyriakoulis Panagiotakos (1932-33) Kyriakoulis Panagiotakos (1932-33) The Sociable City Athens’ approach wasn’t just about modern living – it was also about creating a sociable city, centered on family and the community. The antiparochi system allowed homeowners to pass down apartments to their children, preserving family traditions while embracing urban life. Many polykatoikias also had shops, cafes, and business on the ground floors, providing the local community with much-needed communal spaces. Ms. Kiourti noted that while grand modern projects in other countries often struggled, Athens’ smaller, more individualistic developments had lasting appeal: “This unique method of urban development may have denied Greek architects the satisfaction of creating large-scale, narcissistic projects. In Athens, projects were smaller and more modest, with original plans often altered during implementation, frustrating the architects and altering their initial visions. Large parts of the city were even built without the involvement of architects at all.” The organic, at times even anarchic, path of Athens’ development has been key to the city’s vitality. “Many people, architects and urban planners, acknowledge numerous qualities embedded in the Athenian urban fabric such as the vibrancy of many parts of the city throughout the day, the diversity in the facades of its buildings, a lively and sociable way of life, a mix of social classes, a sense of freedom…. the true beauty of a city lies in how it is inhabited: Form follows function.” Ms. Kiourti ended her address on a high note: “Athens is indeed an attractive city. However, the city is not attractive because of its beautiful buildings, but because of its attractive way of life.” Source link #Polykatoikia #Athenian #Apartment #Building #Unique Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

MARIN COUNTY, Calif. – The Marin Municipal Water District is rewarding homeowners who cut down on their water use. The county is now boosting the amount of rebates home and business owners can get as part of it’s “Cash for Grass” program. The rebate increase is in an effort to drive more applicants before the next drought. The rebate amount has increased from $1.50 per square foot to $2.18 per square foot, the water district announced in its February newsletter. The offer provides a rebate for homeowners who install low-water-use gardens in place of lawns. The county first launched the program during a drought in 2021. Hundreds of homes and businesses have signed up for the program in the years since. According to the water district, the rebate is limited to 1,000 square feet for homeowners and 5,000 square feet for businesses. How to apply Dig deeper Rebate applicants are required to submit an application before starting their landscaping project. Home and business owners will then have a pre-inspection before starting the project. Once your application and project are approved, you’re required to complete your landscaping within 180 days. To qualify for the $2.18 per square foot rebate, applicants have more flexibility with replacing their grass, the water agency says. For a larger rebate, the water district also offers a stricter, best practices program, which helps with long-term water savings. This program comes with a rebate of $3.68 per square foot. For the higher rebate, home and business owners have to meet stricter water requirements, like installing sheet mulch in place of lawn, planting low-water-use plants and installing a rain garden. James Carville Names Key Date Trump May Be Dreading James Carville Names Key Date Trump May Be Dreading Longtime political strategist James Carville warned Democratic politicians not to get in the way of the protests springing up around the nation against President Donald Trump and his billionaire ally, Elon Musk. “What I think they should do is what we call in rural America play possum,” he told MSNBC’s Ari Melber on Monday. “Just let it go. Don’t get in the way of it. Or as we like to say, ‘Don’t just stand there. Do nothing.’ Let this germinate.” He compared the movement against Trump to a freight train on the move and told Democratic politicians to keep out of the way until the right time. “In the immortal words of Dalton in ‘Road House,’ be nice until it’s time not to be nice,” Carville said. “And that time is coming shortly.” Carville also took aim at moderates who say people are overreacting to Trump. “No one is overreacting,” he said. “We’re living in real time in a catastrophe.” But he said the tide will turn against Trump ― and predicted it will happen “way sooner than you think.” Carville pointed to one specific date coming up later this year: the Nov. 5 election in Virginia, where voters will replace outgoing Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican who has aligned himself closely with Trump. “Think about the turnout among federal employees,” he said. “What percent of the voters in northern Virginia are federal employees or families of federal employees? Do you think they’re gonna vote? I think they’re gonna vote. I think I know which way they’re gonna vote, and they’re gonna vote heavily.” Federal workers have been targeted by Trump and Musk, who have been slashing budgets, shutting down departments and laying off workers.
