  1. Google App Reportedly Prepares New Shortcut Ahead of New Search ‘AI Mode’ Google App Reportedly Prepares New Shortcut Ahead of New Search ‘AI Mode’ Google Search could soon get a new ‘AI mode’ that was recently spotted in development. An icon that could be used to represent the purported artificial intelligence (AI) mode has been spotted by a publication. A new icon resembling the Gemini Live feature has arrived on the latest Google app beta release. This is said to be the new icon the Mountain View-based tech giant will use for the Search app’s AI-powered interface. This new tool was first spotted in December 2024, and it is said to offer a full-screen interface where users can type complex queries that are difficult for the traditional search engine to answer. Google Search’s AI Mode Could Reportedly Get a New Icon Android Authority reports that the company could rearrange several icons on the Google app home interface, ahead of the introduction of the rumoured Google Search AI mode. The new icons were spotted by the publication during an Android application package (APK) teardown of the Google app beta 16.6.23 for Android smartphones. As the new icons and shortcuts are still in development, beta testers will not be able to see them even after updating to the latest version. However, screenshots shared by the publication give us a good look at the new interface that could replace the four existing icons representing Google Lens’ camera. Currently, Google shows shortcuts for translate, homework, and music search options. These could be replaced with three new icons. The second and third icons are for the microphone and Google Lens, but the first one is a new waveform-shaped icon. As per the report, the new icon, which has two additional lines compared to Gemini Live’s icon, is for a new feature dubbed Search Live. The name was found within the code of the Google app. It is speculated that Search Live could be a two-way voice conversation feature for the upcoming AI mode. Alternatively, it could also be an internal name used to reference the AI Mode. Considering the icon duplication and inconsistency in naming, it is likely that the icon and the feature could undergo further updates, and the final version could be quite different. A report earlier this month claimed that the tech giant is internally testing the AI mode. The company is said to have shared an email to employees inviting them to use and test the feature. It is unclear if or when the feature will be rolled out to users. Source link #Google #App #Reportedly #Prepares #Shortcut #Ahead #Search #Mode Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. X Premium+ Subscription Price Reportedly Hiked Hours After Grok 3 AI Model Launch X Premium+ Subscription Price Reportedly Hiked Hours After Grok 3 AI Model Launch X (formerly Twitter) has reportedly hiked the prices of its X Premium+ subscription — the highest subscription tier on the microblogging platform. The price of Premium+ on X has currently been hiked in the US. As per a report, the price increase was rolled out hours after Elon Musk’s xAI introduced the Grok 3 family of artificial intelligence (AI) models. Customers will effectively pay twice the price of the older subscription cost. The price hike only affects the highest subscription tier, and the Basic and Premium tiers are currently available at the same price. Notably, the platform has also announced another Super Grok subscription. X Premium+ Subscription Revised Pricing According to a TechCrunch report, X has hiked the price for the Premium+ subscription plan to almost $50 (roughly Rs. 4,350) per month in the US, doubling it from the previous $22 (roughly Rs. 1,900) per month. The annual price is also said to be increased to $350 (roughly Rs. 30,400). The publication states that the new prices were mentioned on the social media platform’s support page in the US, but adds that there are several inconsistencies in the pricing. While testing out the new pricing, the publication’s reporters were offered a monthly price of $39.83 (roughly Rs. 3,460) or $477.95 (roughly Rs. 41,560) annually. However, the final check-out page was charging $395 (roughly Rs. 34,350). When Gadgets 360 staff members checked the support page, the price of X Premium+ was still listed at $22 a month. If true, this would mark the second price hike for the particular tier in the last three months. In December 2024, the platform raised the Premium+ subscription plan’s price from $16 (roughly Rs. 1,400) a month to $22 per month. This change was also reflected in India where the subscription’s price went up from Rs. 1,300 a month or Rs. 13,600 a year to Rs. 1,525 per month or Rs. 18,300 annually. It is possible that the company is conducting A/B testing with the pricing across various channels to gauge the reaction of consumers. However, so far the prices in India have not been updated, and they are currently listed at the same hiked prices introduced last December. Notably, the reported price hike was spotted just hours after the Grok 3 AI models were released. The new models come with features such as chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning, DeepSearch, and voice mode. 3. Meghan puts a new label on her jams and lifestyle range Meghan puts a new label on her jams and lifestyle range Sean Coughlan Royal correspondent PA Media Meghan was in Canada last week with Prince Harry for the Invictus Games Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has announced a new identity for her lifestyle brand, which will be called As Ever. Despite the social media teasers showing celebrities with pots of jam from Meghan, the previous brand name American Riviera Orchard seems to have reached a sticky end. On a social media post, Meghan said the newly-named product range would be a joint project with Netflix, which is showing her cooking and lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan next month. “‘As ever’ means ‘as it’s always been’ or some even say ‘in the same way as always,'” said Meghan’s post. The recorded message, delivered in close-up by Meghan, emphasises the continuity with her former, pre-royal, lifestyle blog, the Tig. She said that the new venture would be “beautifully weaving together everything I cherish – food, gardening, entertaining, thoughtful living, and finding joy in the everyday”. Prince Harry, who has been at the Invictus Games in Canada, is heard briefly off-camera in the background of the recording of the Instagram posting. The previous name American Riviera Orchard had been a reference to the part of California where she lives with Prince Harry – and Meghan said it “limited me to things which were manufactured and grown in this area”. That had been promoted since April 2024, when celebrities published pictures on Instagram of jars of strawberry jam, in a launch that tried to preserve a sense of mystery. If this latest announcement means the lid is going to come off a new jam war, the Californian contender will be up against Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Strawberry Preserve, both at £7 and Highgrove Organic Preserve at £6.95. The new As Ever brand will be a partnership with Netflix, with reports that the TV company is going to open shopping outlets which will sell merchandising connected to its shows. The launch of Meghan’s TV show was delayed by the wildfires in California, with the US state the backdrop for the series, which is expected to be a mix of cooking, hosting tips and celebrity friends and is due to run on Netflix from 4 March after being delayed due to the wildfires in Los Angeles. It is five years since Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down as working royals, becoming financially independent in the United States. Meghan says in her social media post, she has “poured my heart into” this forthcoming product range. Meghan divides public opinion, with strong reactions on social media from supporters and opponents. Her fans have saluted her independence and creativity, while her opponents have already labelled the brand as “whatever”. Appropriately, she signed off her own post: “As ever, Meghan.” Source link #Meghan #puts #label #jams #lifestyle #range Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Shuhei Yoshida looks back at 31 years at Sony PlayStation Shuhei Yoshida looks back at 31 years at Sony PlayStation Eonjay16h ago “Let’s just allow more people to play and yes, […]” I think the thing that erks me the most about Microsoft is the PR answer to everything. I mean I get it. They would never be allowed to operate in an other manner… but it is so constant and annoying that it just grates on you. Here, for example, he is saying he is going to ‘Allow more people to play’… but he really means Microsoft wants to ‘Allow Microsoft to make more money’. They, in my oponion, are past to point where they have to constantly try to pretend to be wearing the white hate. The biggest winners here by far a PlayStation consumers (they get access to games withouth having to buy an additional box)… and Microsoft of course (they get a massive windfall of gaming revenue on premium games, something they have been missing out on). Sony wins too because they get the 30% or Microsoft sales on their box. Source link #Shuhei #Yoshida #years #Sony #PlayStation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Toronto plane ****** survivor speaks out after aircraft flips on runway Toronto plane ****** survivor speaks out after aircraft flips on runway New video has emerged on Tuesday of the chaotic moments after Delta flight 4819 flipped over on the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport. In the video — obtained exclusively by ABC News — passengers can be seen hanging upside down in the cabin, being held into their seats dangling only by their seatbelts. Peter Koukov, who was able to shoot the video as he crawled out, said he didn’t know something was wrong until they hit the ground. “We hit the ground and we were sideways, and then we were hanging upside down like bats,” Koukov told ABC News. “It all happened pretty, pretty fast. The plane was upside down, obviously, some people were kind of hanging and needed some help being helped down.” The flight crew can be seen standing on the ceiling helping passengers scramble to escape in the video. “The one minute you’re landing and kind of waiting to see your friends and your people and the next minute you’re physically upside down and just really turned around,” Pete Carlson, a passenger on the plane, told ABC News. “It sounded, I mean, it was just cement and metal, you know.” The Delta regional jet, a CRJ 900 aircraft operated by Endeavor Air, departed from Minneapolis on Monday afternoon, heading to Toronto with 76 passengers and four crew landing just after 2 p.m. local time. PHOTO: An emergency responder works around an aircraft on a runway, after a plane ****** at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga (Cole Burston/Reuters) “All of a sudden the fire trucks and helicopters, you know, pushed out on a trolley and thought there was something wrong,” said Ron James, an eyewitness who saw the smoke right before he was supposed to board his flight at a nearby terminal. “Then we were going to get on the plane and they said no you’re not going anywhere.” At least 18 passengers were taken to hospitals, airport officials said in an update Monday evening. Peel Regional Paramedic Services said none of the injuries were considered to be life-threatening. Three people suffered critical injuries — one child, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s — according to Ornge, which provides medical transport. The child was transported to the Hospital for Sick Children and is listed in good condition, the hospital said Monday evening. Among the others, 12 people have mild injuries, Peel Regional Paramedics Services said. “Airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, reaching the site within minutes,” said Deborah Flint, president and CEO of Toronto Pearson International Airport. “This outcome is in due part to their heroic work, and I thank them profusely.” At the time of landing, winds were gusting up to 40 mph but the cause of the ****** is still under investigation. “This is an active investigation. It’s very early on,” said Todd Aitken, fire chief at Toronto Pearson International Airport. “It’s really important that we do not speculate. What we can say is the runway was dry and there was no crosswind conditions.” ‘Hanging like bats’: Toronto plane ****** survivor speaks out after aircraft flips on runway originally appeared on abcnews.go.com Source link #Toronto #plane #****** #survivor #speaks #aircraft #flips #runway Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  10. Energy bills forecast to rise by £85 a year Energy bills forecast to rise by £85 a year Domestic energy prices are forecast to rise by 5% from April, adding £85 a year to household bills, according to consultancy Cornwall Insight. The forecaster, which is widely regarded for its accurate predictions, said a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity would pay £1,823 a year. The predicted higher prices will take effect at the same time as increases to water and council tax bills in April. However, minimum wage levels will also go up while benefits and the state pension will increase. Cornwall forecasts that the price cap will rise from £1,738 per year for a typical household. With gas and electricity prices set to increase, some homes might look at the options available to fix their energy tariff. Ofgem, the regulator, will announce the official new energy price cap level on 25 February, which will affect homes in England, Wales and Scotland. The price cap affects 26 million households on default, variable tariffs and is set every three months by Ofgem. While the cost of each unit of gas and electricity is capped, the total bill is not. The regulator illustrates the cap by showing the impact on the annual bill of a household with typical energy usage. In January, there was a 1.2% rise – which worked out as £1.75 extra a month compared with the previous cap. A ******* of high prices means households have collectively built up debt of £3.8bn to suppliers. The average household in arrears owes more than £1,500 for electricity and £1,300 for gas. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – Gameplay, Voice Actors, And Everything We Know Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – Gameplay, Voice Actors, And Everything We Know Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has long been considered the best game in the stealth-action franchise, and this year, a remake is aiming to bring the beloved game into the modern era. First revealed during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater retains the jungle survival gameplay of its PS2 source material, as well as its tight political plot, heartbreaking betrayals, and an origin story that shows how the legendary soldier Naked Snake earned the codename of Big Boss. After combing through official assets, social media, and Konami data, we’ve managed to piece together an early look at the Snake Eater remake that’s currently in development. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater release date Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be released on August 28. Platforms While it might have debuted at the PlayStation Showcase, don’t expect Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater to be a PlayStation exclusive. Konami has confirmed that the game will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is also rumored to be in development for the Switch 2, the new Nintendo console that was officially revealed earlier this year. Official screenshots Gallery Who is developing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater? Konami describes this remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 as one that “brings unprecedented new graphics, immersive stealth action gameplay and sounds to its riveting story as players once again return to the world of Metal Gear.” Konami added that the “central role” will be taken on by Konami developers who have been “involved in the production of the past [games in the] Metal Gear series, and that they’ll be working alongside Virtuos, a studio who has also been “involved in the production of previous entries in the Metal Gear series.” What’s new in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater? First off, you’ll be able to choose between playing the game with modern controls in a modern third-person action game format or you can opt for a setup closer to the original game that comes with a traditional MGS top-down viewpoint. Players can also change their equipped camouflage on the fly with a quick-select button. On a technical level, the shift to Unreal Engine 5 has also allowed Konami to overhaul the animations of Snake Eater as part of its modernization efforts. “At the early stages, we had planned on only overhauling the graphics to modern standards, but we just didn’t think it would be satisfying to play if that was the only update, so in the end we remade nearly all the animations, and found ways to refresh almost every facet of the game, as well as fully realizing elements that were held back by technical limitations at the time of the original,” series producer Noriaki Okamura said in a blog post. The original voiceover recordings from Snake Eater on PS2 have been kept for the remake, but some new lines have been recorded. “We’re using all the original voice performances, but there are some lines where characters teach you the controls that really don’t match anymore,” Okamura explained in a 2024 interview. “So we actually did get the original actors to re-record just those. Plus, back then, twenty years ago, we actually had to compress the voice acting down a lot to fill all that audio. Today, we aren’t as limited. We don’t have to compromise as much on formats and compression, so we can actually have those performances in even higher quality.” What does Metal Gear Solid Delta mean? Confused by the use of that Greek symbol? The official Metal Gear Twitter account explained that the Delta symbol was chosen because its meaning “fits the concept” of the remake project. “Delta means change or difference without changing structure,” according to the account. Is Hideo Kojima involved in Metal Gear Solid Delta? Hideo Kojima and his key collaborators have no involvement with Delta. In an interview with IGN, Konami confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 director Hideo Kojima and his frequent artistic collaborator Yoji Shinkawa, who helped establish the signature design of the Metal Gear Solid series, are not involved with the remake. “They are not involved,” a Konami spokesperson said. “However, the development team will work hard to create this remake and also the ports–for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection–so that they can be enjoyed on multiple platforms by even more players all around the world.” After Kojima and Konami split ways during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami began distancing itself and the series from Kojima. It even blocked him from accepting an award in person for The Phantom Pain at The Game Awards in 2015. If there is one positive takeaway from the reveal trailer, it’s that this cinematic teaser has a lot of references to Snake Eater throughout it. While it might look like a BBC documentary that explains how the food chain works, you can see references to Shagohod, The End’s faithful companion, and even a codec conversation about giant ants. People Are Sharing The Pain Everyone Underestimates Until They Experience It Themselves, And It Ranges From Physical To Emotional People Are Sharing The Pain Everyone Underestimates Until They Experience It Themselves, And It Ranges From Physical To Emotional Whether it be through medical procedures or emotional stress, we’ve all experienced pain at some point in our lives. However, certain kinds of pain are known only to the people who have experienced it themselves. On one Reddit thread, people are discussing the most “underestimated” kinds of agony, and it ranges from physical to emotional. I’ve rounded up 19 of the most insightful examples below: 1.”Gallbladder attacks are the worst pain I’ve ever felt. One of my friends had two kids before she started having gallbladder issues. She said the gallbladder pain was far worse than the contractions during either of her child labors.” –chalupa_batman_xx 2.”Grief for pets. When one of my cats died last year, I realized just how difficult it really was. I cried for days, and felt guilty for not being there to say goodbye.” –hawkeyethor 3.”Chronic pain. People will treat chronic pain sufferers like whiney children, but when they’ve had the same headache for three days, they’re incapacitated. No, Karen, get out in the sun like the rest of us have to be.” –Bugaloon 4.”Domestic violence. It causes CPTSD, which medical professionals will tell you is common in law enforcement, firemen, war veterans, and domestic violence survivors. That’s if you survive.” –crionicstone 5.”Mutually being in love then one unexpectedly decides they don’t feel the same. Just happened to me. I’d step on legos and get kicked in the nuts all day instead.” –JohnnyFatSack 6.”Gout and passing kidney stones. The latter is sometimes described as ‘the closest a man can get to the pain of childbirth.’ I’m sure childbirth can hurt more. The good thing about kidney stones, at least for me, was how quickly I was given heavy-duty pain relief. No arguing, no pleading. Just one look at me, and the nurse was like, ‘Can we get some morphine over here?'” Peter Dazeley / Getty Images –zcobb99 7.”Grief. You think that you can handle it, and most days you do…but the soul crush you experience by losing someone close to you, it’s not something you can understand until you’ve gone through it yourself. The emotional pain is incredible.” –ThinkSleepKoya 8.”Opioid withdrawal. Nobody even tries to understand because we ‘did it to ourselves’ and whatever else. But it’s really harrowing stuff — your entire body starts to malfunction. Every nerve in your body screams at you for a chemical it’s not getting (which translates to full-body bone/joint pain, nerve pain, and muscle pain). And that’s just the pain! Then there’s the massive gastrointestinal reaction, constant yawning/eyes watering, intense depression and anxiety, hot and cold flashes, oh, and it’s impossible to sleep for more than 1-2 hours for DAYS. Yeah, glad I’m sober. Withdrawal feels like being trapped in a nightmare realm.” –falafelwaffle55 9.”Slipped disc. When people say, “Oh yeah, I’ve had a bad back, nope. Once you do a disc, you are ******* for the rest of your life. Numb legs, sciatica spasms, millions of pain killers that damage your liver and kidneys…look after your backs, people.” –Slimontheslug 10.”Psychological pain: alienation, bullying, exclusion. In ancient Rome, they considered being excluded from a community so damaging that anyone sentenced to death could choose to be exiled instead.” –F33dR 11.”A tonsillectomy as an adult. I’ve experienced ruptured ovarian cysts and dealt with endometriosis and adenomyosis for my entire adult life, and I ended up having a hysterectomy at 41. I have never experienced pain quite like that of the scabs slowly coming away from the surgical site of my tonsils. Excruciating doesn’t begin to describe it. I ended up back to the doctor and was prescribed liquid morphine and even that didn’t dull the pain.” Jajah-sireenut / Getty Images –heyuinthebush 12.”Combat. It’s nothing like video games or movies. It’s gritty, gory, intense, and scary as hell. Also, people don’t respawn. I say this as a multiple deployment veteran who was a medic.” –DocB630 13.”Sinus pain. It’s absolutely debilitating, to the point that holding a conversation isn’t possible.” –GildedStrife 14.”IUD Insertion. I screamed and said to the nurse, ‘You said it wouldn’t hurt’ immediately after. Her response was simply, ‘Well, it didn’t last long.’ I vowed on my drive home that I would NEVER get one again. I’d rather be abstinent.” Master_video / Getty Images –HarryPickles69 15.”I know a lot of people won’t understand it, having not experienced it before. But for me, the worst type of pain is the emotional pain I experience every day from gender dysphoria as a trans woman.” –Ropesy101 16.”When you know something is wrong with your body but doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with you. On top of not feeling yourself, it’s extremely lonely and frustrating.” –unbotheredgal 17.”Healing from a skin graft — having to ‘debride’ the area in question every day — that’s some of the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Fortunately, it was a very small area. I can’t imagine what burn victims go through.” –manniax 18.”This sounds ridiculous, but really bad constipation. One of the worst stomach pains I’ve ever experienced. Thought it was appendicitis and had to go to the ER for it.” Agrobacter / Getty Images –PoeticCylinder 19.”Migraines. If anything available over the counter cures your headache, it isn’t a migraine. It’s another level of pain that people have no idea about unless they experience it. Shares have declined nearly 20% in the past 12 months. This is part of a larger downturn for the beauty company — in the past three years, Bath & Body Works has underperformed the S & P 500 by around 70 percentage points, according to Boss. 18. ‘Hopeless’ to potentially handy: law firm tests chatbots ‘Hopeless’ to potentially handy: law firm tests chatbots Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have got significantly better at answering legal questions but still can not replicate the competence of even a junior lawyer, new research suggests. The major British law firm, Linklaters, put chatbots to the test by setting them 50 “relatively hard” questions about English law. It concluded OpenAI’s GPT 2, released in 2019, was “hopeless” but its o1 model, which came out in December 2024, did considerably better. Linklaters said it showed the tools were “getting to the stage where they could be useful” for real world legal work – but only with expert human supervision. Law – like many other professions – is wrestling with what impact the rapid recent advances in AI will have, and whether it should be regarded as a threat or opportunity. The international law firm Hill Dickinson recently blocked general access to several AI tools after it found a “significant increase in usage” by its staff. There is also a fierce international debate about how risky AI is and how tightly regulated it needs to be. Last week, the US and *** refused to sign an international agreement on AI, with US Vice President JD Vance criticising European countries for prioritising safety over innovation. This was the second time Linklaters had run its LinksAI benchmark tests, with the original exercise taking place in October 2023. In the first run, OpenAI’s GPT 2, 3 and 4 were tested alongside Google’s Bard. The exam has now been expanded to include o1, from OpenAI, and Google’s Gemini 2.0, which was also released at the end of 2024. It did not involve DeepSeek’s R1 – the apparently low cost ******** model which astonished the world last month – or any other non-US AI tool. The test involved posing the type of questions which would require advice from a “competent mid-level lawyer” with two years’ experience. The newer models showed a “significant improvement” on their predecessors, Linklaters said, but still performed below the level of a qualified lawyer. Even the most advanced tools made mistakes, left out important information and invented citations – albeit less than earlier models. The tools are “starting to perform at a level where they could assist in legal research” Linklaters said, giving the examples of providing first drafts or checking answers. However, it said there were “dangers” in using them if lawyers “don’t already have a good idea of the answer”. It added that despite the “incredible” progress made in recent years there remained questions about whether that would be replicated in future, or if there were “inherent limitations” in what AI tools could do. In any case, it said, client relations would always be a key part of what lawyers did, so even future advances in AI tools would not necessarily bring to an end what it called the “fleshy bits in the delivery of legal services”. 19. Iran charges detained Britons Craig and Lindsay Foreman with espionage Iran charges detained Britons Craig and Lindsay Foreman with espionage Foreign Office Detained Britons Craig and Lindsay Foreman have been charged in Iran with espionage, the country’s judiciary news agency has said. Mr and Mrs Foreman were arrested in January but news of their detention, on unspecified security charges, emerged last week. A judiciary spokesperson said that the couple, both aged 52, had “enter Iran under the guise of tourists” and “gathered information in multiple provinces of the country”. The pair moved from East Sussex to start a new life in Andalucia, Spain, in 2019 and had appeared on an episode of Channel 4’s A New Life in the Sun in 2022 to showcase their lives as expats. The couple, both aged 52, had been on a motorbike trip around the world and had planned to stay in Iran for five days. Mr and Mrs Foreman were heading for Australia on their journey across the globe and had crossed into Iran from Armenia on 30 December and were planning to be in Pakistan by 4 January. 20. I tried Perplexity’s Deep Research and it doesn’t quite live up to ChatGPT’s research potential I tried Perplexity’s Deep Research and it doesn’t quite live up to ChatGPT’s research potential AI chatbots are often accused of a somewhat shallow approach to gathering and explaining information. That may soon change as developers race to put out AI models that can really get to the bottom of a subject. That’s certainly what Perplexity is aiming for with its new Deep Research feature, which is available on all its tiers, both free and paid-for. Coincidentally, that’s the same name OpenAI uses for a very similar ChatGPT Pro feature also called Deep Research. The two tools both promise to do the heavy research work for you. Supposedly, they can comb through the vast sprawl of the internet to deliver curated, well-reasoned answers. Despite the name, it’s worth noting that the Deep Research fees are a little different. OpenAI’s Deep Research requires a $200-per-month subscription to ChatGPT Pro, which is still capped at 100 queries per month. It can also take as much as 20 minutes to get a full report. It’s worth noting that OpenAI says that the Deep Research feature will filter down to ChatGPT Plus, then free tier users at some point in the future. Perplexity’s Deep Research is much nimbler, coming back with answers in a few minutes despite still covering a broad range of sources to compile responses. Still, you get up to five queries a day for free and up to 500 a month with a Perplexity Pro plan, which costs $200, but for an entire year instead of a month. I wanted to test the two Deep Research tools against each other, but I didn’t want to pay for a ChatGPT Pro plan for the privilege, but OpenAI helpfully already had several Deep Research answers in a demonstration. I chose three and tested them against Perplexity’s Deep Research to see how they did. TV mysteries (Image credit: Screenshots from Perplexity/ChatGPT) I started with the ‘needle in a haystack’ query from ChatGPT’s Deep Research. It was a long, rambling question about a specific TV show episode. The prompt asked: “There is a TV show that I watched a while ago. I forgot the name but I do remember what happened in one of the episodes. Can you help me find the name? Here is what I remember in one of the episodes: Two men play poker. One folds after another tells him to bet. The one who folded actually had a good hand and fell for the bluff. On the second hand, the same man folds again, but this time with a bad hand. A man gets locked in the room, and then his daughter knocks on the door. Two men go to a butcher shop, and one man brings a gift of vodka. Please browse the web deeply to find the TV show episode where this happened exactly.” ChatGPT’s Deep Research had a solid, seemingly accurate answer, saying the episode came from the Starz series Counterpart, specifically “Both Sides Now,” which was the fourth episode of the first season. It cited the show’s own episode summary and wiki. Perplexity Deep Research, meanwhile, seemed to be trying to gaslight me with its answer. The AI asserted that I was thinking of season 1, episode 5 of Poker Face, titled “The Stage Play *******,” but that I was apparently conflating other shows in my description. According to Perplexity, my description meant I was mixing Poker Face in my brain with the Lifetime movie Girl in the Closet and scenes from the reality series Beekman Boys. The description may have been from the ChatGPT test, but Perplexity seemed confident that I was simply merging details from three wildly different sources, none of which were the correct answer. Score one for ChatGPT’s slow and expensive option. Snow shop (Image credit: Screenshots from Perplexity/ChatGPT) For the shopping genre, OpenAI put together a doozy of a complex request for winter sports equipment with this prompt: “I’m looking for the perfect snowboard. I ride mainly in Hokkaido twice a month in the winter. I like groomed runs but also want something that can handle fresh powder. I prefer all-mountain or freestyle boards with medium flex, stable for carving yet maneuverable. Also, I want it in a citrus color palette. Mid-to-premium price range. Oh, and I want availability in Japan. Format the response in an easy-to-read table.” ChatGPT’s Deep Research had a highly structured response that laid out two tables. The first went through the pros and cons of five recommended snowboards, followed by the specs for each board. It even included detailed recommendations on how best to snowboard in Hokkaido’s unique powder conditions. Perplexity’s Deep Research came back in a couple of minutes with several tables, including one for the recommended boards and their specs, along with separate tables for color, price, maintenance, and accessibility. It all made sense as far as I could tell, but there was zero overlap in the recommendations. After being told I was incapable of telling a Lifetime movie from a gritty time-loop drama, neither of which matched my request, I admit to being a bit leery of what Perplexity pushed on me here. The kicker (Image credit: Screenshots from Perplexity/ChatGPT) The final prompt test fell under the ‘general knowledge’ section and is far shorter than the other prompts. The query is simply: “What’s the average retirement age for NFL kickers?” ChatGPT wrote a mini-dissertation about how kickers last longer in their careers, the range of ages where they retire, and a lot of insight into the reasons why they keep playing longer than those in other positions. That said, “mid-to-late 30s” was as precise as the AI was willing to go in picking an average age of retirement for kickers. It did stake a claim that 4.8 seasons is the average length of their careers. Perplexity, too, wouldn’t commit to a specific age of retirement but erred on a younger scale of early-to-mid 30s instead of later. The AI also cited statistics showing kickers with an average career of 4.4 seasons. Those kinds of statistics likely vary based on the age of the sources. But, while neither was egregiously wrong, Perplexity’s answer was somewhat messier and wandered a bit in focus compared to the neatly organized ChatGPT essay. Pay for depth ChatGPT’s Deep Research was undeniably better in its final form from this brief test. The exhaustive, well-structured reports were quite well-written. That being said, they were also very dry and dull. And while they included sources, I wouldn’t want to stake too much on how ChatGPT interpreted the information without some human double-checking. It would make sense as a resource for academics or other professionals working on weighty research projects, but not without aid. Perplexity’s Deep Research, on the other hand, is great for those who want a lot of information collated quickly and relatively cheaply. It’s a bit like a good abstract for a scholarly dissertation. You get the key bits and maybe even some numbers, but you’re not going to be able to judge the whole book from that. Still, if you want to get into more complex and far-ranging topics and put together a starting point for your own research, Perplexity’s Deep Research is a solid solution. If you have $200 a month to burn and a huge stack of complicated projects you want to get through, ChatGPT Pro might be worth it just for Deep Research. On the other hand, if something similar appeals to you on a smaller, more personal scale, a Perplexity Pro subscription is a much better bargain. And you don’t even have to pay for that if you rarely need any Deep Research done. Either way, human oversight is mandatory if you want to catch errors, verify sources, and ensure that conclusions make sense, or even just to check that you haven’t hallucinated an unholy chimera of a TV show like Perplexity claimed I had. 21. ‘Only God’: Massive ‘Miracle’ as Thousands of Students Choose Jesus, Confess Sin, Get Baptized ‘Only God’: Massive ‘Miracle’ as Thousands of Students Choose Jesus, Confess Sin, Get Baptized Author and speaker Jennie Allen is witnessing what she calls a real-life “miracle.” Allen told CBN News she was absolutely astounded last Wednesday night, when UniteUs, a ministry serving young people, arrived at the Rupp Arena at the University of Kentucky and saw thousands of students show up to praise the Lord. “This is this is just all a miracle,” Allen said. “We are on our 12th University. Next week, we will go to 13th at Ohio State, and, in every single case, it has been miraculous.” Images and photos show hordes of young people engaging in praise and worship, with many coming forward to accept the faith and get baptized. “So many kids come forward, confess sin, follow Jesus, and we’re baptizing usually into the morning,” she said. “And it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s unlike anything I’ve even been bold enough to pray for … until recently.” Allen continued, “You can just see all over the stadium, huddles of kids, wiping tears, nodding, praying, holding each other. I mean, it’s so precious and brave.” After the event, four people baptized droves of young people for around an hour and a half, showcasing the full impact of these events. Allen mentioned one young man who was lost and not living right whose friend had been praying for him. “He said, ‘I’m tired of living the way I was living and I want something to change,’” she said. “And he goes, ‘I’ve been going this way and now I need to go this way.’” It was incredible for the man’s friend, who had been praying for him, to see him change right before his eyes. “It can only be God,” Allen reiterated. Despite never dreaming such events could be possible, Allen has been blown away by all God has done. It’s especially remarkable because these campus events are organized by local student teams who do all the fundraising and work to make it unfold. The young team responsible for the University of Kentucky event had prayed fervently beforehand, doing a massive, 42-mile prayer walk around their campus. Allen, who is gearing up for her own event, Gather25 — a “25-hour global broadcast event telling the inspiring stories of the global Church, by the global Church” — said it’s remarkable to see these revival-like moments unfolding on campuses across the globe. Ultimately, she believes these simultaneous spiritual revivals are all God-ordained. ***As the number of voices facing big-tech censorship continues to grow, please sign up for Faithwire’s daily newsletter and download the CBN News app to stay up-to-date with the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.*** Source link #God #Massive #Miracle #Thousands #Students #Choose #Jesus #Confess #Sin #Baptized Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  22. What to expect from Apple’s new launch this week What to expect from Apple’s new launch this week Last week, Apple’s Tim Cook teed up a new product for launch on February 19 — that’s tomorrow. Cook’s tweet also included an animated image of a shimmering Apple logo, which made a lot of us assume the reveal could be for a second-generation AirTag. It’s been rumored for a while that Apple would introduce a second-gen tracker sometime this year, and the original AirTag landed almost four years ago. So there are plenty of tech upgrades the tracker could benefit from. Rumors suggest the next AirTag may feature a more tamper-proof speaker to reduce stalking and an improved Ultra-Wideband chip with up to 3x longer tracking range. However, would the CEO of Apple tweet (and hype up) a mere accessory? Probably not. Following a barrage of leaks and rumors, a next-gen iPhone SE seems more likely. This upgraded entry-level basic iPhone may appear with a design closer to the iPhone 14. That means appearing with a notch, so no Dynamic Island, no home button. It’ll likely make the shift to USB-C and probably have enough power to run all those Apple Intelligence features too. (In the past, while SE iPhones have had humble screens and hardware, Apple typically packs them with chips on par with the latest iPhones.) It could also be a wildcard: Apple’s rumored smart display is meant to arrive sometime this year too. Having said all that, there isn’t really an Apple device as shiny as an AirTag. We’ll find out tomorrow. Hopefully alongside some more tech news because it’s been a quiet few days. — Mat Smith Get this delivered direct to your inbox. Subscribe right here! 23. Intel principal engineer bemoans potential TSMC takeover, touts company’s 18A tech advantage Intel principal engineer bemoans potential TSMC takeover, touts company’s 18A tech advantage The rumors about Intel and TSMC forming a semiconductor production joint venture have spurred significant reactions among analysts, the industry, and politicians. Needless to say, it was natural for Intel employees to react to the information, too. Joseph Bonetti, Principal Engineering Program Manager at Intel Corp. wrote in a LinkedIn post (embedded below) that the company is about to reclaim its process technology lead and gain customers among fabless chipmakers in the coming years, so handing TSMC control of Intel’s manufacturing would be counterproductive. “Intel Leaders, Intel Board, Trump Administration, please do not sell out and/or give control of Intel Foundry to TSMC, just as Intel is taking a technical lead and getting out of first gear. This would be a horrible, demoralizing mistake,” wrote Bonetti. Contrary to reports suggesting it lags behind a key competitor, Bonetti argues, Intel is making significant advancements in semiconductor manufacturing. The company’s latest fabrication process, Intel 3, is already used to make Xeon 6 datacenter processors, while the company’s next-generation Intel 18A is nearing completion and is expected to be used to make Panther Lake processors for client PCs later this year. Meanwhile, TSMC’s equivalent process technology — N2 (2nm-class) — will only enter mass production phase in late 2025. Intel is also ahead with its High-NA EUV initiatives. The company acquired two ASML Twinscan EXE machines and is the only chipmaker that has experience working with such tools. Despite financial struggles, Intel Foundry is poised to prove itself with major partners, which makes any potential deal that hands control to a rival a major strategic error. Many claims in recent reports misrepresent Intel’s progress, stresses Bonetti. Some suggest TSMC engineers are needed to get Intel’s latest process technologies to work, but Intel 3 has been in mass production for months, and Panther Lake made on Intel 18A is already sampling with laptop manufacturers. Intel 18A and TSMC N2 both introduce gate-all-around transistors, but Intel’s fabrication process includes an additional breakthrough: backside power delivery, which promises to improve efficiency and performance and give Intel’s products an edge over those made by TSMC. The Intel engineer recons that Intel Foundry is currently unprofitable due to massive investments in facilities and equipment, and it has yet to win contracts from major external customers. However, early adoption by Microsoft and Amazon signals confidence in Intel’s capabilities. If these efforts succeed, more industry leaders may shift production. To that end, ceding control of Intel Foundry to TSMC would neutralize Intel as a competitor and harm U.S. leadership in the semiconductor industry.
