  2. Avowed – Ancient Arrowhead Treasure Map Location Avowed – Ancient Arrowhead Treasure Map Location Treasure maps in Avowed provide you with an image to try and track down some unique loot, somewhere in each region. In Galawain’s Tusks, you can acquire the Ancient Arrowhead treasure map, found in the Writhing Ruins in the southern part of the map, in the same area that the Mater Mare bounty target can be found, looted from a skeleton in the bounty boss arena. With the treasure map, you can set out to find the hidden loot. Note: You will need three lock picks to open the chest with the treasure. Where to find the Ancient Arrowhead treasure The chest can be found east of Warden’s Rest. The Ancient Arrowhead treasure can be found in a locked chest on a ledge east of Warden’s Rest in the Salt Flat Farms area. In this area there is a cave leading down, but the treasure is not down there. You need to climb around the ledge here while staying on top of the cliff. If you start from the northern area, it’s pretty easy to wrap around the rocks to find the chest. Collect the Scout’s Reach to complete the quest. The chest contains the Scout’s Reach, which will complete the quest once collected. This trinket gives you +3 perception when worn. Trinkets cannot be upgraded or improved via enchantment, so if you don’t want that bonus, you can sell it for 600 gold, or throw it in your stash to maybe use later. The chest also includes various upgrade materials, as well. Obsidian is no stranger to crafting compelling RPGs. For more help on the team’s latest effort, use our Avowed guides hub. Across from the boots, you can find another cave, which can be opened using fire, and the chest can be accessed after using Yatzli’s disillusion spell, but this loot is unrelated to the treasure map. Loot the Wavebinder Boots to complete the quest. The Wavefinder Boots offer two passive bonuses. The first is +15 maximum essence, with the second being Sure Footing, which reduces movement when taking a hit. Boots cannot be upgraded in any way, so these passives cannot be changed. 9. Hegseth Orders Pentagon to Draw Up Plans for Cuts Hegseth Orders Pentagon to Draw Up Plans for Cuts Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered senior military and Defense Department officials to draw up plans to cut 8 percent from the defense budget over each of the next five years, officials said on Wednesday. Mr. Hegseth said in a memo issued on Tuesday that a number of branches within the military and the Pentagon should turn in budget-cutting proposals by Feb. 24, two officials said. The memo listed some 17 exceptions to the proposed cuts, including military operations at the southern border. One senior official said the cuts appeared likely to be part of an effort to focus Pentagon money on programs that the Trump administration favors, instead of actually cutting the Defense Department’s $850 billion annual budget. For example, the Pentagon is already spending more money on the Trump administration’s efforts at the southern border, including on military flights that have taken migrants in the United States to countries as far away as India. Mr. Hegseth has vowed to use thousands of active-duty U.S. troops to help stem the flow of migrants across the border, a top priority for President Trump. But ******** crossings, which reached record levels during the Biden administration, slowed significantly before Mr. Trump took office last month. In the memo, which The Washington Post reported earlier, Mr. Hegseth repeated a phrase he uses often about the need for the military to focus on “the warrior ethos.” He called for a rejection of “excessive bureaucracy” and unnecessary spending. Any cuts to the defense budget may face opposition in Congress, where lawmakers often focus on budget cuts that could affect their districts. The Pentagon is also bracing for proposed cuts to its work force, and has already been asked to hand over to the Trump administration lists of probationary employees who could be laid off. A senior military official said on Wednesday that Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency has expressed interest in moving Pentagon full-time employees to contract positions so that they would be easier to fire. In a post on the social media site X on Tuesday, Mr. Hegseth shared a DOGE post saying that the department was looking forward to eliminating “waste, fraud and abuse.” “DOGE the waste; Double Down on warriors,” Mr. Hegseth wrote. 10. Trump echoes Russia as he flips US position on Ukraine Trump echoes Russia as he flips US position on Ukraine Trump questioned on Ukraine not being invited to US-Russia talks If there were any lingering doubts about Donald Trump’s view of the Ukraine war and America’s support of Kyiv’s fight against Russia, he put them to rest in stark terms on Wednesday. Lashing out at Volodymyr Zelensky, who less than three years ago received a standing ovation in Congress for his efforts to resist Russia’s invasion, the US president labelled Ukraine’s leader a “dictator” and accused him of corruption. He said Zelensky wanted to “keep the gravy train” of foreign aid running, a day after he appeared to blame Ukraine – not Russia – for starting the war. “Zelensky better move fast, or he is not going to have a country left,” Trump wrote. It’s been just under a week since Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a lengthy phone conversation. Now Trump is echoing Russia’s talking points about the war and the Ukrainian president. Russia’s ambassador to the *** Andrei Kelin praised the Trump administration’s approach. “For the first time we have noticed that they [the US] are not simply saying that this is Russian propaganda and disinformation. They have listened and they hear what we’re saying,” he told BBC Newsnight. This sudden change in US foreign policy is indeed dramatic, but it should not be surprising. Trump has been charting this course for years. His latest comments reflect an American president who is wielding total authority over his party and the full power of government to turn a transactional “America First” foreign policy view into reality. Trump’s latest broadside against Zelensky came after the Ukrainian leader publicly rejected an American bid to gain access to – and profits from – Ukrainian minerals. “That’s not a serious conversation,” Zelensky said. “I can’t sell our state.” The US president seems serious, however, about reducing American military commitments to Europe and pivoting resources instead toward containing China. His willingness to upend international norms and push the limits of US power on the global stage parallel his domestic efforts to slash the federal government and expand presidential authority. And, at least for the moment, there seems to be little interest among Trump’s own party or the larger public in opposing him. After Trump’s Wednesday social media posts, a few Senate Republicans expressed dismay. “I certainly would not call President Zelensky a dictator,” Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowsk said. Susan Collins of Maine said she disagreed with Trump, as did John Kennedy of Louisiana, who added that Putin was a “gangster”. Fresh off a trip to Kyiv, Thom Tillis of North Carolina said the Ukraine war was “the responsibility of one human being on the face of the planet: Vladimir Putin”. If the past is a guide, however, those words within his own party will not translate into any tangible attempt to redirect Trump’s foreign policy. Presidents have broad powers in international relations, and Trump has been clear about his views on Ukraine for years. In November’s election, a plurality of American voters re-elected him. Trump has consistently blamed the Ukraine war on Biden administration weakness, and promised that ending it would be easy. And while his earlier criticisms of Zelensky were not as sharp as this week, he regularly claimed that the Ukrainian president was adept at convincing Congress to send his country money. Zelensky says Trump ‘living in disinformation space’ created by Russia Trump has a long, uneven history with Zelensky, having been impeached in 2019 for withholding arms shipments to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure the Ukrainian leader to open an investigation into his Democratic rival, Joe Biden. Zelensky’s aggressive pitch for foreign aid, and the way the American left celebrated him as a hero, also may not have helped his cause with Trump. And the Ukrainian’s sometimes blunt, confrontational style – including his decision to step up his criticism of Trump – has not helped his case with the US leader. “The idea that Zelensky is going to change the president’s mind by badmouthing him in public media, everyone who knows the president will tell you that is an atrocious way to deal with this administration,” Vice-President JD Vance said in a recent interview. Trump has also been consistent in his solicitous views toward Putin and the Russian perspective. He said Putin was a “genius” just days after he launched his invasion of Ukraine. At a July 2018 US-Russia summit in Helsinki, Trump said he had no reason to doubt Putin’s insistence, counter to US intelligence findings, that Russia did not meddle in the 2016 US election. In Trump’s first term, his foreign policy team included some senior officials more sceptical of Russian intentions – like John Bolton, Mike Pompeo and John Kelly – who were able to moderate the president’s foreign policy impulses. This time around, Trump is surrounded by many like-minded advisers – and those who might disagree are unwilling or unable to change Trump’s mind. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, once viewed as a foreign policy hawk, has been careful to follow Trump’s lead. Keith Kellogg, a Russia critic who Trump picked as his Ukraine envoy, has been sidelined from negotiations with Moscow, while Steve Witkoff – Trump’s Middle East representative and trusted friend – is directly involved. Trump also has a base of Republican support that agrees with him – further shoring up his political position. A February Pew survey indicated only 30% of Republicans believed the current level of US support for Ukraine is “not enough” or “just right”. When the war began, 72% felt that way. Forty percent of Republicans said they believed supporting Ukraine “hurts” US national security, versus only 27% who said it helps. Watch: Rubio lays out ‘first steps’ for talks with Russia to end Ukraine war The Biden White House had argued that standing up to Russia in Ukraine was essential to US national security, but that is a far cry from how Trump and his closest advisers see the world – not in ideological clashes, but in transactions and relations that either benefit or harm American interests. His Truth Social post, for instance, lamented that the US “will get nothing back” for the support it has given to Ukraine. His focus on the nation’s rare minerals tracks with his Middle East peace plan that involves the US redeveloping Gaza’s waterfront real estate into a resort, or his interest in maintaining control of – and profiting from – Syrian oil fields in his first presidential term. Trump’s “America First” priorities do not involve committing US resources to spread democracy or getting involved in far-away conflicts across a “big, big beautiful ocean”, as he wrote on Wednesday. The Ukraine war, he said, is “far more important to Europe than it is to us”. This is a sharp change from the interventionist conservatism of George W Bush, the most recent Republican president before Trump. But with Trump as the face of the Republican Party since 2016, the changes over the past few weeks have been sudden – but they have also been a long time coming. 11. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s archive is now available to sample The BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s archive is now available to sample Attention audiophiles: the archive of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop is being made available to the public for the first name. This department was founded in the 1950s as a laboratory that could invent original music and sound effects for BBC radio, and later television, programming. Over the years, its roster of innovative musicians and composers created audio for iconic BBC productions of the 1950s and 1960s such as Doctor Who, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the Goon Show and Blake’s 7. In addition to developing those signature sounds, members’ work also laid early foundations for creating electronic music and sampling. In the words of Radiophonic Workshop archivist Mark Ayres, the department “was purely for making bonkers noises.” Now, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop library is being offered to today’s creators to sample through a collaboration between Spitfire Audio and BBC Studios. This library includes sounds from the studio’s original tapes as well as new recordings and content from the Workshop’s members and associates. The collection has subheadings for topics such as found sounds, junk percussion and synths, so there’s a lot of fascinating stuff to explore. It is available at an introductory price of $159 (£119/€143) until March 6; afterwards, the standard price will by $199 (£149/€179). 14. Why Trump’s tariffs aren’t affecting the stock market Why Trump’s tariffs aren’t affecting the stock market Despite worries about President Donald Trump ‘s trade war, this earnings season shows that companies are choosing to focus on upcoming tailwinds, allowing investors to largely shrug off tariff concerns. “Animal spirits over tariffs” is the takeaway from this earnings season, Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said in a Monday research note. Excluding results from energy companies, which are subject to volatility, real revenues in the fourth quarter have gained 3.2% year over year due to resilient consumer spending, he said. In addition to the encouraging top-line results and commentary, a more lax regulatory business environment under the Trump administration is boosting corporate optimism, Hatzius added. “Deregulation might not be a near-term tailwind, but broader optimism and capex expectations have improved sharply … reinforcing our above-consensus capex view for 2025,” said the economist. He said there has been an uptick in business investing indicators, adding that the Institute for Supply Management ‘s purchasing managers’ index in manufacturing last month reached its highest level in two years . Further, an increase in business spending on new factories and artificial intelligence, as well as tax incentives and lower short-term borrowing rates for small businesses, will power around 5% growth in business investment this year, per Hatzius. “The improvement in business optimism supports our above-consensus view on investment spending,” he said. 15. Hackers are levelling-up identity theft attacks with AI – here’s what you need to look out for Hackers are levelling-up identity theft attacks with AI – here’s what you need to look out for It’s never been more important to protect your identity online. The rise of AI has led to increasingly sophisticated attacks which can intelligently locate all manner of details about you, including leaked passwords, contact details and online accounts, meaning the bad guys barely have to try any more. The consequences of identity theft are also becoming increasingly serious. Almost everything we do, including banking, investing, messaging, storing media and even authentication is done online, meaning a breach can lead to all manner of consequences, including financial loss, reputational damage, legal trouble, years of remediation processes and exposure of private data that you wouldn’t want exposed. (Image credit: Getty Images) Everyone is at risk The issues escalate quickly when kids are involved, too. Many young people possess online street smarts, but they don’t often get lectured about online security like they do with stranger danger. Cybercriminals know, all too well, that plenty of young people’s online-game accounts are laden with valuable game-related l00t and that they’re potentially very soft targets who are more-likely to swap important credentials on the promise of free in-game currency and other temptations. So, how can you help prevent this happening to you and yours and what are your options if you fall victim? Many people reading this will likely deal with an online service that still asks security questions like your mother’s maiden name, birthplace and pets’ name etc. This is farcically easy to find, not only from your own social media profiles, but from those of friends and family. Add AI to the mix and it’s never been easier to generate a personal profile of someone’s entire life. Escalating threats Then there are deepfakes. Basic social media filters illustrate just how easy it is to wear someone else’s face online, and it’s even possible to copy your voice based on a few words said in a video. The most secure consumer platforms require a combination password, trusted device authentication, two-factor authentication (2FA – usually via SMS or email), authenticator app passcodes and even live facial recognition because each of these can now be hacked on their own. But, how many online entities do you deal with that perform all of these checks, at once? And the scams are multiplying exponentially. Just this month, a North Asian country was exposed as being behind a sophisticated scam that captures personal details and delivers malware through online job ads. Other serious AI-based threats have recently come from Fake Netflix communications; Malware-infected cracks for popular online games, fake Google ads that steal Google passwords and 2FA credentials; fake Nvidia graphics card security alerts; nefarious YouTube tools; Gmail account-recovery hacks (that affected 2.5 billion users); and even car park hacks where payment was requested via a QR code. It’s worth noting that most of these examples have come to light in just the past few weeks! That’s all on top of years’ worth of tried and tested identity theft tactics (like dumpster diving, mail theft and malicious address changing) plus, scams we don’t even know about yet. Even classic, noughties, fake antivirus scams are making a comeback. You need to protect yourself, or this might happen… (Image credit: Getty Images) How bad can it be? Aussie mum Sarah Luke was affected when her PayPal account was hacked. The hackers then used her account to sell over $1million of fake sporting goods. She was promptly sued by both Adidas and the NBA in America and was fined $1.8m in a default judgment. So, what is one to do? Prevention is the priority. It’s still important to have anti-malware protection on your PC or Mac and, where possible, your mobile devices too. These will pick-up standard and evolving threats and use AI to fight AI. Secure data backups and password managers are critically important. These don’t just facilitate using complex, unguessable passwords, they usually check whether your credentials have been leaked online. Check for yourself at haveibeenpwned.com. Using a VPN to browse the web more securely and privately is also essential. (Image credit: Getty Images) Protect yourself, now Here, it’s worth mentioning Norton 360 Advanced . The brand emphasizes mezcal as a luxury product that honors its traditional roots by embodying the soul of Oaxaca’s agave-growing culture. Every drop of ZOMOZ tells the story of tradition, craftsmanship, and the artistry behind its production. Crystal-clear in appearance with a subtly smoked agave aroma, complemented by notes of honey, butterscotch, gentle floral notes, roasted green chili, and white pepper, ZOMOZ is made from 100% organic Espadin agave and pure spring water. The agave is cooked underground in a conical stone oven fueled by ethically sourced sustainable wood, then crushed using a traditional stone wheel (tahona). Fermentation occurs in open pine vats (tinas), and the mezcal is distilled twice in copper pot stills before undergoing a proprietary double filtration system. This dedication to a traditional artisanal process is evident in every sip. Crystal clear and ripe with bright agave, robust smoke, and a plethora of layered, nuanced flavor notes of fresh agave, stone fruit, leather, and a hint of vanilla, ZOMOZ mezcal is both elegant and rustic. Often overshadowed by tequila, mezcal’s distinct smoky flavor and artisanal production methods have made it the go-to spirit for those seeking something unique. An essential part of every bar cart, mezcal offers a unique flavor that transforms any drink into something extraordinary. And whether you are a new or an experienced mezcal drinker, a great option is ZOMOZ Mezcal, a premium artisanal spirit that stands out for its commitment to traditional Oaxacan mezcal-making techniques and its dedication to honoring ******** heritage. Maestra Mezcalera Isabel Santiago Crafted in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca—the heart of the indigenous Zapotec region—ZOMOZ is produced by fourth-generation Maestra Mezcalera Isabel Santiago at her family’s organic agave plantation and palenque. Santiago is one of few female mezcaleras in Mexico. Her production is as authentic as it comes, with every step of the 100% sustainable process supervised and performed by her team of seasoned, Oaxacan artisans. ZOMOZ co-founder Diego de la Vega Fernández Diego de la Vega Fernández is co-founder of ZOMOZ Mezcal. The Mexico City-born Fernandez’s upbringing, academic background, and early career paths took him to all corners of the globe. Yet, no matter how far he strayed, the passion he held for his culture and homeland never wavered. Alongside his partners, he established ZOMOZ to introduce a premium, authentic mezcal to the U.S. market, aiming to celebrate ******** culture and craftsmanship. The brand emphasizes mezcal as a luxury product that honors its traditional roots by embodying the soul of Oaxaca’s agave-growing culture. Isabel Santiago & Diego de la Vega Fernández While mezcal’s rise to global prominence is relatively recent, its roots trace back centuries, and its growing popularity speaks to a cultural shift in how we appreciate spirits. It was awarded Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits Competition 2024, for good reason. Salud! 21. Hades II’s second major update adds a ‘final confrontation’ and more Hades II’s second major update adds a ‘final confrontation’ and more The second major update to Hades II adds a mysterious “final confrontation,” an updated Altar of Ashes and the return of the god of war… Ares. (Were you expecting someone else?) And there’s more to come: In addition to Wednesday’s Warsong Update, developer Supergiant Games says its third big one is in the pipeline for “some months from now.” Although Supergiant is staying mum about who is involved, it teased a “Final Confrontation on the surface” as the headlining feature of today’s update. “Discover what lies beyond the Guardian of Olympus… if you dare!” The sinister and demonic voice in the video below suggests it might not have the best of intentions. Also new (in the sequel, anyway) is Ares, the god of war. He has “varied and vicious” Boons on offer, as one would expect from a bloodthirsty God of Olympus. Supergiant also updated the Altar of Ashes with new art and reworked Arcana effects, a new Animal Familiar and other changes. The Warsong Update is free and an automatic download. Of course, Hades II is still in early access. Given that the first game stayed there for nearly two years, you probably shouldn’t hold your breath for an imminent public release. Regardless, you can check out the sequel’s new content on Windows and macOS via Steam or Epic. 22. An 11-year-old girl in Texas died by suicide after she was bullied about her family’s immigration status, her mother says An 11-year-old girl in Texas died by suicide after she was bullied about her family’s immigration status, her mother says Editor’s Note: Help is available if you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health matters. Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. A young girl’s death by suicide is being investigated by school police after her mother says she was bullied by other students who hurled insults at her, claiming her family was in the US illegally. Eleven-year-old Jocelynn Rojo Carranza died on February 8 – five days after her mother found her unresponsive at their home in Gainesville, Texas, according to an online obituary. Her ******** took place Wednesday morning. “All week I’ve been waiting for a miracle – waiting for my daughter to get better,” her mother Marbella Carranza told CNN affiliate KUVN. “But unfortunately there was nothing that could be done.” Jocelynn was bullied and taunted at school over her family’s immigration status, Carranza told KUVN. “They were going to call immigration so they could take her parents away and she would be left alone,” Carranza said. She did not address the immigration status of the family in her interview with KUVN. Jocelynn attended Gainesville Intermediate School, according to KUVN. Carranza claims her daughter’s school was aware of the alleged bullying but did not tell her, and she only learned her daughter had been receiving counseling at school when investigators told her, Carranza told KUVN. CNN has reached out to the school for comment. “It appears the school was aware of it all, but they never, they never told me what was happening with my daughter,” Carranza said. “It appears she would go once or twice a week to counseling to report what was happening.” “(I want) justice because it’s not fair – the school was negligent for not keeping me informed of what was going on with my daughter,” she added. An investigation is underway, Gainesville police said in a statement referring calls to the Gainesville Independent School District Police, which is investigating the bullying allegations. The Gainesville Independent School District did not acknowledge whether it was aware of reports of bullying against Jocelynn. “Whenever we receive a report of bullying, we respond swiftly to ensure all students are safe physically and emotionally. While we cannot release any information about specific students or incidents, our schools have several policies in place to combat bullying and resolve conflicts,” the district told CNN in a statement. Another school in the district called the incident a “serious accident” in an email to parents that did not address the bullying allegations. Carranza described the day she found her daughter, on February 3, to KUVN. “When I got home, they were still working on her, trying to revive her, she had been without life for a long time,” she said. Family and friends mourn Jocelynn’s death Hundreds of friends and family members, including many children, packed St. Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday to attend Jocelynn’s ********. A group of mourners wore white sweatshirts with the young girl’s picture emblazoned on it, while others wore pastel shades of blue, lavender or pink in her honor. During the service, her loved ones could be heard crying as a mariachi band in the balcony of the church played somber music. In the same church where Jocelynn was baptized 11 years ago, her casket laid draped in a white cloth with a crucifix on top. Carranza said Jocelynn told her every day that she loved her. “I remember her fondly because she was a very happy girl, she was a joyful girl,” she said. Jocelynn is remembered as “a wonderful daughter, sister, niece and friend to everyone,” in the online obituary. She played the French *****, made TikTok videos, swam, did cartwheels and spent Friday nights watching movies with her family, according to the obituary. “She loved when her grandma took her to get her nails done,” the obituary reads. This is a developing story and will be updated. 23. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Discounted For Switch, Xbox, And PS5 At Amazon Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Discounted For Switch, Xbox, And PS5 At Amazon Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has largely maintained its $60 list price since its release last November, but Amazon currently has the turn-based RPG on ***** for its lowest price yet. Amazon’s Dragon Quest 3 deals include all three console platforms–Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X–but each edition is priced differently. Since these are “random” undefined deals, it’s unclear when the gorgeous remake of the all-time classic will jump back up to full price. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake recreates the original 1988 version of the game with all-new visuals, reorchestrated music, and even some new gameplay tweaks, while maintaining the content of the original. The original Dragon Quest 3 was notable for having one of the first class-switching systems in a console RPG, and a non-linear, open-world structure. The game still holds up well today, and the HD-2D Remake gives it a beautiful visual upgrade along with numerous quality-of-life features. Narratively, Dragon Quest 3 takes place before Dragon Quest 1 and 2, so you don’t need to worry about playing Dragon Quest 1 or 2 first. Square Enix is currently developing HD-2D remakes of the first two games, too. They will bundled together in one package, which is slated for release this year. The first three games form what is often referred to as The Erdrick Trilogy. The art style of all three remakes aligns with Square Enix’s other gorgeous HD-2D games, including Live A Live, Octopath Traveler 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and Triangle Strategy. Nintendo Switch users should also check out Amazon’s deal on Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. The monster-taming spin-off is on ***** for $30 right now. Square Enix recently lowered the MSRP on the 2023 RPG from $60 to $40. And if you enjoy Dragon Quest 3, you might be interested in the upcoming manga. Dragon Quest: The Mark of Erdrick is a sequel that takes place 100 years after the final battle. Preorders for the 376-page paperback are available for $25 at Amazon ahead of its September 23 publication date. 24. I.R.S. to Begin Laying Off Roughly 6,000 Employees on Thursday I.R.S. to Begin Laying Off Roughly 6,000 Employees on Thursday The Internal Revenue Service will begin laying off roughly 6,000 employees on Thursday as part of the Trump administration’s push to downsize the federal work force, three people familiar with the agency’s plans said. The terminations will target relatively recent hires at the I.R.S., which the Biden administration had attempted to revitalize with a surge of funding and new staff, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The Trump administration has begun laying off probationary employees — who do not enjoy as much job protection as their more tenured colleagues — across the federal government in recent days. I.R.S. managers on Wednesday began asking employees to report to the office in the coming days and bring with them their government-issued equipment, according to messages viewed by The New York Times. The I.R.S. employs roughly 100,000 accountants, lawyers and other staff across the country. “Under an executive order, I.R.S. has been directed to terminate probationary employees who were not deemed critical to filing season,” one such email reads. “We don’t have many details that we are permitted to share, but this is all tied to compliance with the executive order.” The layoffs come in the middle of tax filing season. Former I.R.S. officials and Democrats have warned that losing such a large number of employees could still disrupt the ability of millions of Americans’ to easily file their taxes this year, even if the layoffs are not supposed to affect those deemed “critical.” Representatives for the I.R.S. and the Treasury Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Republicans have long pushed for cuts at the I.R.S., accusing the agency of taking politically-motivated steps against conservatives. Some lawmakers, including President Trump’s nominee to run the agency, have called for abolishing the tax collector. Mr. Trump chose Billy Long, a former Republican congressman, to lead the I.R.S., taking the unusual step of replacing the former commissioner, Daniel Werfel. Mr. Trump has already targeted the I.R.S. for an extended hiring freeze, and the Department of Homeland Security has asked for I.R.S. agents to help with immigration enforcement efforts. A member of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency has also sought broad access to the tax agency’s sensitive taxpayer records. “There’s a flood of resumes from people at the I.R.S. looking for jobs throughout the tax community,” Dave Kautter, who led the agency on an acting basis and served in the Treasury Department during Mr. Trump’s first term. “Law firms are getting a fair number of resumes, accounting firms are getting a fair number of resumes.” Source link #I.R.S #Laying #Roughly #Employees #Thursday Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. The white man who pleaded guilty to shooting a ****** teen who rang a wrong doorbell dies The white man who pleaded guilty to shooting a ****** teen who rang a wrong doorbell dies KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — An 86-year-old Kansas City man has died just days after pleading guilty to a lesser charge in the 2023 shooting of Ralph Yarl, a ****** honor student who rang the white man’s doorbell by mistake, prosecutors announced Wednesday. Andrew Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the shooting of the then-16-year-old, who survived and is now a freshman at Texas A&M. Before his trial was scheduled to begin, he pleaded guilty Friday to a lesser charge of second-degree assault, which carries up to seven years behind bars. He was scheduled to be sentenced on March 7. Cher Congour, a spokeswoman for the Clay County prosecutor’s office, said Lester’s attorney called the office and the court, and informed them of his death. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “We have learned of the passing of Andrew Lester and extend our sincere condolences to his family during this difficult time,” the prosecutor’s office said in a news release. “While the legal proceedings have now concluded, we acknowledge that Mr. Lester did take responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty in this case.” The news release offered no cause of death. The case shocked the country and renewed national debate about gun policies and race in the U.S. Yarl showed up on Lester’s doorstep on the night of April 13, 2023, after he mixed up the streets where he was supposed to pick up his twin siblings. Lester’s attorney, Steve Salmon, had argued that Lester was acting in self-defense and that he was terrified by the stranger who knocked on his door as he settled into bed. Authorities say Lester shot Yarl twice: first in the head, then in the arm. Yarl testified at a hearing that he rang the bell and then waited for someone to answer for what seemed “longer than normal.” As the inner door opened, Yarl said, he reached out to grab the storm door, assuming he was at his brothers’ friends’ parents. He said Lester shot him in the head and uttered, “Don’t come here ever again.” Although the bullet didn’t penetrate Yarl’s brain, the impact knocked him to the ground. Yarl said Lester then shot him in the arm. The teen was taken to the hospital and released three days later. His family said the shooting took a big emotional toll and they had filed a lawsuit against the retired aircraft mechanic. “Now, another ****** child harmed by prejudice will never see the man who shot him face the full weight of the justice system. While Lester finally admitted guilt, it came at the very last moment—after two years of stalling. That delay leaves our family reeling,” Yarl’s family said in a written statement Wednesday. Salmon said last year that Lester’s physical and mental condition had deteriorated. He said Lester had heart issues, a broken hip and had been hospitalized. Lester also lost 50 pounds (23 kilograms), which Salmon blamed on the stress of intense media coverage and death threats he subsequently received. During Friday’s hearing, the judge asked Lester whether he was in poor health. Lester responded yes. “Ralph is doing his best to be okay,” a spokesperson for the family said in a text. A judge had previously ordered a mental evaluation of Lester but allowed for the trial to proceed after its completion. The results of that evaluation were not released publicly.
