  2. Don’t want a Tesla Model Y? Try these instead Don’t want a Tesla Model Y? Try these instead The Tesla Model Y is Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) by some margin, and there’s an updated model arriving imminently. It would seem to be the default choice if you’re after a mid-sized electric SUV then, right? That’s why brand after brand is going straight for the Model Y. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconDeepal S07 Credit: CarExpertCamera IconToyota bZ4X Credit: CarExpertCamera IconFord Mustang Mach-E Credit: CarExpertCamera IconHyundai Ioniq 5 Credit: CarExpert Rivals include the BYD Sealion 7, Deepal S07, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV5 and EV6, Leapmotor C10, Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X and Xpeng G6. You could even count a raft of similarly priced but smaller EV models, while there’s more direct competition coming in the shape of the Cupra Tavascan, Geely EX5, Nissan Ariya, and Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5. Sheesh, did we miss any? Camera IconCupra Tavascan Credit: CarExpertCamera IconGeely EX5 Credit: CarExpertCamera IconVolkswagen ID.4 Credit: CarExpertCamera IconNissan Ariya Credit: CarExpert The competition is getting tougher, which can only benefit buyers – particularly those who are looking to leave the Tesla fold. Perhaps you’re sick of how common Teslas have become, or you dislike the company’s CEO. Maybe you just feel strongly about wanting an actual instrument cluster. Whatever your reason for wanting an alternative to the Model Y, the CarExpert team has put forward some suggestions. Let us know your pick in the comments below! Max Davies: BYD Sealion 7 Having driven a selection of the new electric SUVs arriving from China, it really does seem the Sealion 7 is coming in with the best shot at being a real thorn in Tesla’s side. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Strong build quality and competitive pricing aside, the Sealion 7 has one key advantage over the likes of Deepal, Leapmotor and Xpeng: BYD’s quick establishment in the local market. BYD has firmly put its foot in Australia’s door with a logical lineup of vehicles and more on the way. Its introduction of models like the Seal, Sealion 6 and Shark 6 prove it’s a brand with *********** wants in mind, and it’s being rewarded with convincing sales figures – when they’re not held up at Australia’s ports, of course. The Deepal S07, Leapmotor C10, and Xpeng G6 – the last of which has received particularly positive feedback so far – on the other hand have the challenge of kickstarting not only their individual campaigns locally, but also launching their respective brands. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert I can’t help but feel that if any one of these manufacturers isn’t able to produce something unique or at least considerably better than the others, they won’t be around for very long. Sure, there will be people averse to the Model Y taking a gamble on those other brands, just as there were with Tesla when it made its *********** push 10 or so years ago. Others are likely to go with the Sealion 7 alternative and BYD as a whole instead; a car brand that is already much more diverse than Tesla ever was and probably ever will be. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Looks aside, the Santa Fe is far better equipped than a Model Y and has more space (and seats). Plus if they ever bring the PHEV to Australia you can use a Tesla charger to charge it and show them what a real bold design looks like. Interested in buying a Hyundai Santa Fe? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Buy a Hyundai Santa Fe Jordan Mulach: BYD Sealion 7 It’s very hard to go past a BYD Sealion 7, is for no other reason (though there are many) that it’s a brand which has now entrenched itself in Australia, and is starting to stand on its own two feet. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The related Seal sedan is a good thing, so the proposition of getting into a more spacious Sealion 7 is a tantalising one. The recent price increase for the new Model Y Juniper facelift also adds value to the Sealion 7, which is probably one of the best bangs for your buck you can get in Performance trim. I was initially critical of BYD when they looked to launch in earnest with the Atto 3, but the Seal, Sealion 6 and Shark 6 have so far shown it knows what buyers want. Interested in buying a BYD Sealion 7? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything BYD Sealion 7 Marton Pettendy: Nissan X-Trail e-Power No it’s not an electric vehicle, but this family-size medium SUV looks a whole lot better than a Tesla Model Y, and won’t leave you stranded or looking for a charger that’s not broken or takes forever to top up your battery. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Yet it also drives like an EV, offers far better ride quality and returns fuel consumption that almost matches a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, plus a 900km range. And it comes with a 10-year warranty and the aftersales backup of almost 200 dealers nationwide. At just over $50,000, the price of admission is also lower than a Model Y, and many other ********-made mid-sized electric SUVs. Indeed, all X-Trail e-Power variants are cheaper than any Juniper, and for $60K (before on-road costs), the lavish Ti-L flagship has all the latest safety, multimedia and luxury equipment you’ll ever want, without having to operate them via a touchscreen. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert In fact a lot of people would likely be perfectly suited to the entry-level EV5 Air Standard Range, which offers 400km of WLTP range. At $56,770 before on-roads, however, its asking price isn’t quite as enticing as some newer, less-established rivals. Despite this, the EV5 feels like one of the few car-like electric SUVs on ***** and for people getting into an EV from a combustion car, this can make a world of a difference. Sure it has a large wraparound screen for infotainment, but it doesn’t feel like the entire car hinges around this. Its handling does err on the more comfort-oriented side, but SUVs aren’t inherently sporty anyway due to their higher ride height and body roll. Interested in buying a Kia EV5? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything Kia EV5 William Stopford: Cupra Formentor VZe Yes, yes, I’ve heard all the plug-in hybrid complaints. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert “There’s twice as much to maintain!” “It’s like carrying snow boots around all year when you’ll only go to the snow a few times!” Whatever. The fact of the matter is, an EV doesn’t currently suit me. That’s not to say it won’t later, but for now a PHEV strikes a better balance for my needs. I have a soft spot for the Cupra Formentor in all its forms, even with its occasionally frustrating switchgear and infotainment system. Sure, it’s smaller than a Model Y but it’s nicer inside, and its more compact dimensions make it more nimble and enjoyable to drive. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert An updated model is due this year with considerably more electric range than the current car, too. But if an EV does suit your needs, the Model Y is very good value, and as mentioned a raft of new ******** rivals are out for its blood. Of these, the BYD Sealion 7 and Xpeng G6 appear to be the most compelling competition, but alas I haven’t had the chance to drive either yet. Outside of ******** rivals, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has always been a favourite of mine because of its distinctive styling inside and out, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E after its price adjustments comes in cheaper. Interested in buying a Cupra Formentor? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything Cupra Formentor James Wong: Nissan X-Trail e-Power Yes, I know, it’s not an EV. But, if I was actually shopping for an electrified mid-size family SUV, I don’t know if I’d be down for one of the EV options at the base Model Y’s price point. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The X-Trail e-Power offers much of the driving characteristics of an EV – smooth, effortless and quiet performance, one-pedal driving mode (nearly) – but without the hassle of plugging in. For a little over $65,000 drive-away you can have a fully decked out Ti-L which offers features like quilted Nappa leather trim (available in Tan, too); dual 12.3-inch displays; semi-autonomous driving capability; and a wonderfully spacious and practical cabin. Range anxiety? The X-Trail e-Power will easily get over 700km per tank, and filling it up is an easy 5-minute stop at the servo, rather than a 30-45 min stay at a DC public charger – provided you get one straight away. I know some EV owners will pan me for that last bit, but if it’s your primary vehicle and you’re travelling long distance with kids on board, I’d rather not have the hassle. 3. 3 Energy Stocks to Buy With $500 and Hold Forever 3 Energy Stocks to Buy With $500 and Hold Forever The world continues to use more energy and may continue to do so for the foreseeable future. According to McKinsey & Company’s 2024 Global Energy Perspective, worldwide energy demand could grow until 2050. While the United States and other developed countries have become more energy efficient, the growth in emerging markets is more than offsetting that. Energy will remain the foundation for the global economy, making energy stocks a no-brainer for almost any long-term investor — especially those who like dividends. Admittedly, the conversation about how the world will meet its energy needs is more complex. Renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power, will probably become increasingly important to the world’s energy future. This trend has been ongoing and is poised to continue as countries work to mitigate carbon emissions. Here are three energy stocks you can buy and hold forever. They’ve shown they can navigate a changing world and have the leadership and trend exposure needed to continue delivering growth and dividends. You can own all three for under $500, making them accessible to most individual investors. Here is what you need to know. Some oil and gas companies explore and extract resources from the ground, while others refine oil and gas into products and sell them. However, companies like ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) do it all. They are among the world’s largest oil and gas companies, diverse businesses participating in almost every aspect of supplying fossil fuel products to the economy. The advantage of this is that they tend to be more dependable. For example, a pure oil and gas exploration company is highly vulnerable to commodity prices. If oil prices plunge, so do profits. Meanwhile, when commodity prices fall, an oil refinery could make more money because its costs decrease. ExxonMobil and Chevron do both. They aren’t as volatile as more specialized companies. That might mean less upside during good times but less downside when things go the other way. Both companies’ size and diversity have enabled them to pay and raise their dividends. ExxonMobil and Chevron have raised their dividends for 42 consecutive years and 37 consecutive years, respectively. ExxonMobil and Chevron also have global footprints, spanning almost every continent. Owning both stocks exposes investors to a diverse portfolio of resource-rich regions. The McKinsey report estimates fossil fuel demand will plateau for a while, potentially through the 2030s, before eventually declining. Even then, it’s highly unlikely fossil fuels will collapse. Even the most aggressive forecasts for renewable energy growth still call for fossil fuels to contribute 39% of global power generation by 2050. Story Continues In other words, ExxonMobil and Chevron will remain relevant for the foreseeable future and, at worst, have years to evolve if necessary. That doesn’t factor in industry consolidation, either. ExxonMobil recently acquired Pioneer Natural Resources, and Chevron is working on acquiring Hess. Until then, ExxonMobil (3.7% yield) and Chevron (4.4% yield) offer generous dividends that could still have decades of life. None of that changes the fact that renewable energy is growing. The McKinsey report anticipates wind and solar will satisfy the bulk of incremental energy demand over the coming decades and increase their share of the grid over time. Not to oversimplify things, but that makes NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) a probable winner. NextEra is a diversified energy company. Headquartered in Florida, it operates Florida Power & Light, America’s largest electric utility. Its power-generation unit is the world’s largest energy producer from wind and solar. NextEra’s management estimates that U.S. power consumption will increase by approximately 55% from 2020 to 2040. The company added approximately 12 gigawatts of generation and storage capacity in 2024 and still has a 25 gigawatt backlog. The company has grown earnings at an annualized rate of 10% over the past decade and is guiding for 6% to 8% annualized adjusted earnings growth through 2027. That should continue fueling dividend increases. NextEra yields 3% at its current share price and has raised the dividend for 30 consecutive years. That initial yield isn’t as high as you’ll get from ExxonMobil or Chevron, but the dividend will probably grow more quickly over time. Given the anticipated continued growth in renewable energy, NextEra’s growth seems unlikely to drop off anytime soon. Investors can reasonably expect the business to grow faster than inflation for the foreseeable future, making it a no-brainer dividend stock and the perfect complement to holding ExxonMobil and Chevron. The Shapley supercluster was one of five giant structures detected in a new study of the local universe. Previously regarded as the largest superstructure in space, it has now been eclipsed by at least four others, including Quipu. | Credit: ESA & Planck Collaboration / Rosat/ Digitised Sky Survey Astronomers have discovered what may be the largest-scale structure in the known universe — a group of galaxy clusters and clusters of galaxy clusters that spans roughly 1.3 billion light-years across and contains a mind-boggling 200 quadrillion solar masses. The newfound structure is dubbed Quipu after an Incan system of counting and storing numbers using knots on cords. Like a Quipu cord, the structure is complex, made up of one long filament and multiple side filaments. It spans roughly 1.3 billion light-years (more than 13,000 times the length of the Milky Way), potentially making it the largest object in the universe in terms of length, beating out previous record-holders such as the Laniākea supercluster. The discovery was shared in a new paper posted on the preprint website ArXiv on Jan. 31. (The paper has not yet been published in a peer reviewed journal, but has been accepted by the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.) “Quipu is actually a prominent structure readily noticeable by eye in a sky map of clusters in the target redshift range, without the help of a detection method,” the team wrote in the paper. Related: James Webb Space Telescope smashes its own record to find the earliest galaxies that ever existed The research is part of a long-running effort to map the matter distribution of the universe at different wavelengths of light. Distant structures in the universe show a shift in their wavelengths toward the red part of the electromagnetic spectrum, a phenomenon known as redshift. While objects with a redshift of up to 0.3 have been well-mapped, the researchers focused the new study on redshifts of 0.3 to 0.6. The greater the redshift, the more distant the objects. The biggest structures in the universe The structures reported in the new study were all detected between roughly 425 million and 815 million light-years from Earth. Prior studies suggest that even larger structures exist deeper into the cosmos. The current contender for the largest structure in the universe is the Hercules Corona-Borealis Great Wall, a mysterious concentration of matter located roughly 10 billion light-years from Earth, and spanning an estimated 10 billion light-years across. However, the Great Wall’s existence remains disputed. Quipu was the largest superstructure the researchers discovered in their datasets, but they also found four more giant structures. The smallest, the Shapley supercluster, was previously known as the largest superstructure ever discovered. It’s now been eclipsed by Quipu, plus three others: The Serpens-Corona Borealis superstructure, the Hercules supercluster, and the Sculptor-Pegasus superstructure, which stretches between the two constellations that give it its name. Together, these five superstructures contain 45% of the galaxy clusters, 30% of the galaxies and 25% of the matter in the observable universe, the researchers reported in the paper. In total, they make up 13% of the universe’s volume. This image shows the five newly discovered superstructures. Quipu (red) is the largest structure found in the local universe. The others are Shapley (blue), Serpens-Corona Borealis (green), Hercules (purple) and Sculptor-Pegasus (beige). | Credit: Boehringer et al. / arXiv Space moves in mysterious ways The researchers also detected the ways that this matter affects the overall environment in the universe. The superstructures affect the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the microwave radiation left over from the Big Bang that’s found uniformly across space. The researchers also discovered that the local velocity of these streams of galaxies affects measurements of the universe’s overall expansion: Where the superstructures reign, the local expansion of galaxies can distort the measurement of the overall universe’s expansion, known as the Hubble constant. Finally, the gravitational pull of so much matter can cause a bending of light known as gravitational lensing, which could distort images of the distant sky. RELATED STORIES —5 fascinating facts about the Big Bang, the theory that defines the history of the universe —The universe is expanding too fast for physics to explain —A cosmic ‘CT scan’ shows the universe is far more complex than expected Future research could examine how these large-scale structures have affected the evolution of galaxies, the researchers wrote. Though the structures are only temporary — the universe is always expanding, slowly pulling clusters apart — their sheer size makes them important. “In the future cosmic evolution, these superstructures are bound to break up into several collapsing units,” the researchers wrote. “They are thus transient configurations. But at present they are special physical entities with characteristic properties and special cosmic environments deserving special attention.” Source link #Astronomers #discover #Quipu #single #largest #structure #universe Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The secretive X-37B space plane snapped this picture of Earth from orbit The secretive X-37B space plane snapped this picture of Earth from orbit It’s not every day that we get to see a glimpse of what a mysterious space plane is up to in orbit. This week, the US Space Force shared a picture it says was snapped last year by the X-37B, showing Earth in the distance and a bit of the craft itself. X-37B launched on its seventh mission at the end of 2023, though not much is known about what that mission entails. Its previous flight, which wrapped up in 2022, set a new endurance record for the space plane, logging 908 days in orbit. There isn’t too much information to glean from the photo, but it does offer a rare look at X-37B in space. “An X-37B onboard camera, used to ensure the health and safety of the vehicle, captures an image of Earth while conducting experiments in HEO in 2024,” the Space Force wrote on X. A portion of the X-37B space plane is shown at the top of the image, and Earth can be seen below it in the background against a ****** sky One thing we have been told about the current mission is that it marks the first time the Boeing-made X-37B has tried out a maneuver known as aerobraking, or a more fuel-efficient method of changing orbit through “a series of passes using the drag of Earth’s atmosphere.” The Space Force said back in October that the vehicle had begun the process, and the latest update indicates it was successful. “The X-37B executed a series of first-of-kind maneuvers, called aerobraking, to safely change its orbit using minimal fuel,” the Space Force noted. It’s unknown how much longer the mission is expected to go on. Now he’s trying to sell it for a record-setting $125 million. Billionaire Bill Koch has relisted his huge Aspen compound for $125 million, its highest-ever price. He tried to sell it before with no luck, but he thinks the market is strong enough this time around. See the estate, which has a 16,631-square-foot main cabin and other amenities across 53 acres. Winters in Colorado are cold, but real estate in the Centennial State is anything but. One of the billionaire Koch brothers is trying again to sell his lavish Aspen compound — this time for its highest-ever price: $125 million. If the estate were to sell for anywhere close to its asking price, it would be the most expensive home ever sold in Colorado. Two other billionaires, former casino mogul Steve Wynn and financier Thomas Peterffy, set the current record in April 2024, paying $108 million for a 22,405-square-foot Aspen home. It marked the first time a ***** in the state reached nine digits, placing Aspen among other rarified communities where properties trade for that much, including New York, LA, Palm Beach, and Miami. William “Bill” Koch sold his stake in the family conglomerate, Koch Industries, to his brothersfor $470 million in 1983. Fast forward to 2007, when Koch spent a relatively small sum — $26.5 million — on a former dude ranch just outside the posh ski town of Aspen. Today, after extensive renovations, it has a 16,600-square-foot main lodge and seven cabins, one of which is a home gym. The total square footage of all the structures is about 25,300. The 53-acre property also offers ample Aspen-suitable amenities, including hot tubs, hiking trails, and an altitude-acclimation room. Koch — who is worth $2 billion as of February 21, according to Forbes — told The Wall Street Journal that the $125 million asking price is fitting given that a few of the area’s ultraluxury homes have sold for around $6,000 per square foot. “If we applied that to our 25,000 square feet, our asking price would be $150 million,” Koch told the Journal. “Scarcity fuels luxury sales in Aspen’s real estate market. Just as high-end brands like Hermès and Rolex create demand through limited availability, Aspen’s appeal outpaces its real estate demand,” Koch’s listing agent Steven Shane, of Compass, said in an email. Smith jokes Inglis is going nowhere Having taken his exceptional talent all the way from Yorkshire to Australia, Josh Inglis has ended up making his old home country suffer – leaving Steve Smith to laugh there’s no way England are getting him back. After the Perth batter’s sublime unbeaten, matchwinning 120 steered Australia to the perfect flying start with a five-wicket win over England in their Champions Trophy opener in Lahore on Saturday, the subject of the 29-year-old’s Leeds roots inevitably reared its head again. While the likes of former England captains Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain had mused a mite wistfully in the commentary box about the one who got away, Aussie skipper Smith just wanted to make sure everyone knew the 29-year-old had green-and-gold running through him. “I don’t know if Josh still has an English passport,” mused a smiling Smith. “But he’s not going anywhere!” It’s been an extraordinary breakthrough month for the late-blooming Inglis, who’ll be turning 30 in a couple of weeks. Just over three weeks ago, he recorded his first Test century in Sri Lanka, watched by his parents Martin and Sarah, who had moved the family to West Australia from Leeds when Josh was approaching his 15th birthday. Inglis wasn’t about to deny it was a “special” moment to now have scored a century for Australia in all three international formats but, with messages coming in from family members back in England, he also wasn’t going to rub it in about the occasion being extra-special against the side he grew up supporting. How much of an England fan did he feel now, Inglis was asked. “Yeah, those days are long gone, I think,” he smiled. “I’m over the moon. It was really special. Under the circumstances, in an ICC event, you want to have an impact and win a game. “Look, I think it’s really special. It doesn’t matter who it’s against. It’s a really tight, quick tournament. “We weren’t able to work our way into this tournament. You’ve got to be right on it from the first game, so I think that’s probably the most pleasing thing, to get a win on the board in game one.” His knock off just 86 ******, which included eight fours and six sixes, enabled Australia to rack up the highest-ever Champions Trophy total in their chase as they made 5-356 in 47.3 overs. Indeed, it was highest successful run chase in any ICC one-day international tournament. As he watched Inglis link up for a key 146-run partnership with Alex Carey, the man with whom he’s been battling for the wicketkeeping gloves, after Australia had slumped to 4-136, captain Smith noted admiringly: “They’ve been been batting beautifully, in great form. “Josh didn’t get out of second gear, shots all round the ground.” Even opposition captain Jos Buttler had to concede: “Sometimes you’ve just got to credit the opposition. I thought Josh Inglis played a fantastic innings.” His Australia teammates have enjoyed ribbing Inglis before about his English background, and it’s probably fair to say it would have been a bit unusual if anyone else in their dressing room had been desperate to learn the Coventry City soccer score in the English Championship. Asked if he knew how his favourite side had got on on Saturday while he was enjoying his matchwinning knock, Inglis astonished a few observers by replying: “Yeah, they won 2-1.” Source link #English #passport #Smith #jokes #Inglis Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Elon Musk Says Federal Employees Will Receive an Email ‘Requesting to Understand What They Got Done Last Week’ Elon Musk Says Federal Employees Will Receive an Email ‘Requesting to Understand What They Got Done Last Week’ Federal employees will apparently be on the receiving end of an email that will request insight into “what they got done last week,” Elon Musk announced on X Saturday. “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk wrote. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.” Musk did not elaborate on what employees who receive the email are expected to explain about their workweek, when the email will arrive, and how long employees have to answer. Politico’s Danie Lippman shared an alleged screenshot of the message on X. The subject reads, “What did you do last week?” and the sender is listed as “HR.” The email reads, “Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.” “Please do not send any classified information, links, or attachments,” the email continued. “Deadline is this Monday at 11:59pm EST.” The federal government employs at least 2 million civilians. Trump has instituted mass layoffs across departments since being sworn into office in January. No official numbers are available in terms of people fired, but LiveNOW from Fox reported that the list included at least 2,000 people were fired from the Agriculture Department; 5,400 from the Defense Department; 700 from the Department of Health and Human Services; and 405 from the Department of Homeland Security. Trump has been criticized for allowing Musk, who has no political background, to play such an outsized role in his second administration. 18. Aussie Grace Harris predicts her landmark WPL hat-trick Aussie Grace Harris predicts her landmark WPL hat-trick Grace Harris has become the first *********** to take a hat-trick in India’s Women’s Premier League – and the irrepressible batting allrounder even predicted it. The UP Warriorz star had endured a pretty poor start to the WPL by her fizzing standards, but all that changed on Saturday as she finished off the Delhi Capitals innings with three wickets in three ****** to seal their 33-run win in Bengaluru. “I think I manifested this,” Harris beamed afterwards. “I was joking when I was asked what my plans would be in the bowlers’ meeting and I said I would do this and that, and would get a hat-trick. “We have these casual meetings, but they all started laughing when I got it. “Now I am going to manifest something with the bat because I am a batting allrounder, but my bowling has been better than my batting of late.” The match was effectively already done and dusted at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium when Harris came on to bowl her third over, the 20th and last of Delhi’s innings. First ball, she got rid of Niki Prasad with a short one that the teenager hit straight to Chinelle Henry at deep midwicket, then she couldn’t help laughing as Arundhati Reddya hit her next delivery, a rubbishy full-toss, straight to cover. Next delivery, Minnu Mani struck the ball straight back to her and though Harris nearly spilled it, she managed to hold on, after a little juggle, to end the match with a piece of history. She’s only the third player in WPL annals to achieve a hat-trick, following Issy Wong in 2023’s inaugural edition and Deepti Sharma last year. Harris, who finished with figures of 4-15, had earlier dismissed *********** ace Annabel Sutherland, a key wicket as Meg Lanning’s Delhi never got to grips with having to chase down 9-177 from the Warriorz, eventually succumbing for 144. Lanning, the WPL’s all-time leading run-scorer, was dismissed for just five, the same score as her compatriots and teammates Sutherland and Jess Jonassen. Lanning had earlier put the Warriorz in to bat, and it had looked a good decision as they slumped to 6-89 in the 14th over, with Harris contributing just two off eight ******. But a useful 24 off 23 ****** from another Aussie, Tahlia McGrath, was followed up by an explosive contribution at No.8 from Jamaican big-hitter Henry, who blasted 62 off just 23 ******, with eight sixes. Spinner Jonassen was her usual impressive self with the ball, taking 4-31 off her four overs. 19. Trump’s Own Pollster Just Hit Him with Very Bad News—and a Warning Trump’s Own Pollster Just Hit Him with Very Bad News—and a Warning As you watch President Donald Trump and Elon Musk recklessly attempt to destroy the federal government like a pair of toddlers picking legs off a spider, it seems as if Republicans have decided public opinion no longer constrains them in the least. Polls are already demonstrating public dissatisfaction with Trump-Musk’s autocratic overreach and top agenda items, yet they have only intensified their assault, and GOP lawmakers who have dared to air their concerns have done so in only the meekest of terms. That’s why a new memo from the top pollster on Trump’s 2024 campaign is so intriguing: It finds that sizable majorities in competitive House districts are still unhappy about their economic predicament. Read carefully, it also gently warns Republicans that some Trump priorities they’re about to enact could prove unpopular in those districts, though it avoids saying this directly, perhaps to avoid angering the Audience of One. The memo suggests that some Republicans, at least, do think public opinion matters, and even that maybe—just maybe—they do fear being held accountable in future elections. Like, for instance, next year’s midterms. The memo’s key findings are that 59 percent of voters in 18 swing districts are “worried about their personal financial situation,” and that Democrats are leading in the House generic ballot matchup by five points. As the memo delicately notes, “Republicans have to play catch up.” Trump’s approval in these districts is 47-49, two points underwater. All that adds up to bad news, especially coming from pollster Tony Fabrizio, a chief architect of Trump’s 2024 victory. Indeed, according to Politico, which first reported on the memo, vulnerable Republicans are taking it very seriously. What’s more, in these swing districts, a whopping 80 percent favor extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies for health insurance that Democrats expanded in 2021 and will expire this year. The memo tells Republicans that extending those subsidies would demonstrate that they support the working class, who are overwhelmingly aided by these subsidies. Meanwhile, the poll shows that majorities oppose cutting taxes on corporations. It finds that 63 percent say their top priority for tax policy is helping “working-class families,” versus one percent—no, really, one percent—who say it’s helping corporations and the wealthiest Americans. In short, what Fabrizio’s memo really says is this: Swing voters still feel financially precarious, even though Trump keeps commanding them to think they’re scoring “WINS!” under his glorious leadership. And fiscal policy that takes money from lower-income and working people to help finance lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy will be unpopular in these swing House districts. The memo essentially warns Republicans to stand for prioritizing lower-income and working Americans, not corporations. Guess which one of these sets of priorities Republicans are going to champion? We already know the answer, and this, I think, is the real reason this memo matters. Next week, House Republicans will hold a major vote on Trump’s fiscal agenda. The House blueprint, which Trump backs, lays the groundwork for up to $880 billion in Medicaid cuts and tens of billions in cuts to food stamps. Supporting those things will not be politically easy for some Republicans. Vulnerable House Republicans recently signed a letter urging a rethinking of deep cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, explicitly declaring that this could cost the GOP among some swing constituencies that boosted them in 2024, including working people. But the math is unforgiving. It’s hard to see how Republicans pay for their enormous tax cuts for the rich and corporations without deep cuts to those programs. If and when the party goes ahead with them, most or all of these vulnerable Republicans will go along. They will get no points for foot-stamping letters demanding the contrary. One caveat: The Fabrizio poll finds that a very slim majority supports extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts when they are not defined. But that package contained enormous tax cuts for the rich and corporations, and those would get extended, too. Given the poll’s clear finding that cutting corporate taxes is unpopular—and that working people should be prioritized over the rich—if Democrats can effectively argue that extending Trump’s tax cuts would constitute a huge continued giveaway to the wealthy, Democrats can turn popular opinion against them. There’s precedent for this. During Trump’s first presidency, Republicans confidently believed that they could hoodwink voters into seeing Trump’s original tax cuts as a winner for working Americans. But then the battle was joined, and Republicans were so on the defensive that they stopped talking about the issue at all. That tax bill’s passage was a key reason that Democrats won dozens of seats in the 2018 elections. By the way, don’t overlook the poll’s finding about the popularity of extending the expanded ACA subsidies. This, too, puts Republicans in a difficult spot. The nonprofit group KFF calculates that Republicans represent more than half of ACA enrollees likely to see large premium jumps if the subsidies expire. “House GOP constituents would see the biggest shock from these tax credits expiring,” Larry Levitt, an executive vice president at Kaiser, told me. What will Republicans do? A lot of those constituents are working and middle class, as HuffPost’s Jonathan Cohn details, but extending these subsidies will collide with the bedrock GOP ideological commitment to policies that take from poor and working people to keep taxes low on rich people and corporations. That’s the big picture on all these fronts: Trump and Republicans will again want to advance those broad priorities, but they’ve also been shown repeatedly to be a big political loser. We now have this straight from Trump’s own pollster, who is effectively warning them off of doing exactly that. But as should be overwhelmingly clear by now, they are very much poised not to listen. 22. Haraldsson’s brace as Lille go third in French league Haraldsson’s brace as Lille go third in French league Iceland midfielder Hakon Arnar Haraldsson has scored his first brace in the French league as Lille beat Monaco 2-1 and leapfrogged their rivals to move into third place. Lille have 41 points, one more than Riviera rivals Nice and Monaco. But fourth-place Nice have one match in hand and take on struggling Montpellier on Sunday. Lille dominated early proceedings at the Pierre Mauroy stadium on Saturday and were rewarded in the 22nd minute when Haraldsson broke the deadlock at the conclusion of a slick move. Haraldsson was set up by Ngal’ayel Mukau and rushed toward the goal unchallenged, scoring with a precise shot from the edge of the area into the far corner. Monaco reacted well and had a good chance to level near the half-hour mark when Eliesse Ben Seghir’s attempt with the outside of the foot ended inches wide from Vanderson’s low cross. But Monaco continued their trend this season of making silly mistakes as a sloppy pass from Wilfred Singo to Denis Zakaria led to Lille’s second goal. Under pressure in the box, Zakaria slid and gave the ball away, and Haraldsson pounced from the rebound after goalkeeper Radosław Majecki pushed away his first effort. Haraldsson, who joined Lille in July 2023 from FC Copenhagen, has scored four league goals this season. Takumi Minamino kept Monaco’s hopes alive, though, when he pulled one back just before the interval. Krépin Diatta’s cross was met by Maghnes Akliouche, who headed the ball into the path of Mika Biereth. His clever back-heel found Minamino and the Japanese midfielder slotted home from close range. Monaco, who exited the Champions League this week in a playoff loss to Benfica, have now failed to win any of their last six league matches away. Second-placed Marseille missed the chance to reduce the gap to runaway leaders PSG by losing 3-0 at Auxerre. Marseille had already lost the reverse fixture 3-1 in November. Marseille were chasing a fourth consecutive win but were caught on the break and against the run of the play near the half-hour mark when Gaëtan Perrin cut back inside the box and beautifully curled the ball into the opposite corner. The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 63rd minute following Derek Cornelius’ dismissal and conceded two more goals in the last 15 minutes. Brazilian defender Jubal scored both, including one from the spot. It was Auxerre’s first win in almost three months. PSG can extend their lead over Marseille to 13 points if they win at Lyon on Sunday. Angers forward Bamba Dieng snatched a stoppage time equaliser at struggling Saint-Etienne in a 3-3 draw. Himad Abdelli scored Angers’ first two goals, including the opener from the spot in the seventh minute. Saint-Etienne’s Irvin Cardona also scored twice. His 74th-minute effort when left unmarked at the near post put the hosts in front, until Farid El Melali was fouled in the box and Dieng beat Gautier Larsonneur from the spot to secure a point. Tempers frayed at the final whistle as coaches from both teams grappled with each other while players and members of staff scuffled. Saint-Etienne remained in 16th place in the 18-team league, eight points behind Angers. Source link #Haraldssons #brace #Lille #French #league Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. US Air Force’s 6th-gen fighter NGAD hits milestone with engine design success US Air Force’s 6th-gen fighter NGAD hits milestone with engine design success The U.S. Air Force’s sixth-generation fighter is one step closer to reality, as two proposed engines intended to power the aircraft have successfully passed a significant design review. This milestone was recently announced by the defense firms involved in the development process. General Electric Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney have completed detailed design reviews for their respective engines, referred to as XA102 and XA103. This success allows the companies to move on to the next stage: developing prototype demonstration engines. Engine design success These engines are significant components of the Air Force’s Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) program, which aims to provide the propulsion system for crewed fighters within the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative. The engines feature adaptive technologies that enable aircraft to adjust their thrust configurations based on specific flight situations, offering range, and thermal management advantages compared to conventional engines. Although adaptive technology was considered for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon ultimately opted to enhance the existing F-35 engines due to concerns over costs and compatibility across various F-35 models. Both companies released statements emphasizing the innovative digital design techniques they employed during their review processes. Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX, highlighted how its “collaborative digital environment” streamlined the engine design process. This approach facilitated the electronic transmission of necessary data to reviewers, allowing for more efficient verification of the plans for the XA103 engine. Jill Albertelli, the president of military engines for Pratt & Whitney, noted the importance of this first fully digital review in delivering advanced capabilities to warfighters. Meanwhile, GE Aerospace praised the application of model-based systems engineering in designing the XA102 engine, calling it a transformative shift in the approach to advanced propulsion system testing and development. Steve Russell, who leads GE Aerospace’s Edison Works division, expressed optimism about incorporating this innovative engineering approach as they move forward into the next phases of procurement and production. U.S. Air Force’s 6th-gen fighter NGAD In January, the Air Force announced contract modifications for both firms, increasing the ceiling for the prototype phase of the NGAP contracts to $3.5 billion each. This new figure represents more than triple the original contract value of $975 million awarded to both firms in 2022. With the design reviews now completed, the companies are beginning to acquire the hardware required for constructing their engines, with Pratt & Whitney anticipating that testing of its prototype will occur by the end of the decade. However, questions remain about the future of the NGAD fighter program itself, especially after the Air Force placed the initiative on hold last summer due to escalating cost estimates. This move initiated a review of alternative strategies to ensure air dominance at a reduced expense. After the upcoming 2024 presidential election, then-Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall decided to defer the decision regarding NGAD to the incoming administration. However, studies conducted by the Air Force have indicated a clear need for such a program. Additionally, the U.S. Navy recently awarded Pratt & Whitney a contract worth $186 million to support the sustainment of the F-35’s F135 engines. This contract includes funding for materials and support for maintenance facilities. Furthermore, Pratt & Whitney secured a substantial three-year, $1.5 billion contract in December to maintain the XA103 engines used in Air Force F-22 Raptors to enhance operational readiness and reduce costs associated with over 400 engines. As defense firms continue to develop their engines and the Air Force reassesses its acquisition strategies, the path to realizing the NGAD fighter remains uncertain but is closely monitored by industry and military leaders.
