How Trump chose Dan Caine to be top US military officer
How Trump chose Dan Caine to be top US military officer
By Idrees Ali and Phil Stewart
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Dan Caine may not have been on Washington’s radar before Friday night. But President Donald Trump’s fascination with the retired three-star general, his surprise pick to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, appears to go back to their first meeting in Iraq in 2018.
Caine, then the deputy commander of a special operations task force fighting Islamic State, told the president that the militant group could be destroyed in just a week, Trump recalled during a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2019.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Since then, he has retold the story about how he met “Razin” Caine multiple times – and the praise has only grown more effusive.
“He’s a real general, not a television general,” Trump said in Miami on Wednesday, two days before his Truth Social post catapulted Caine from retirement to a nomination to be the most senior active-duty officer in the U.S. military.
If approved by the Senate, Caine will take over a military that is undergoing change in the first 30 days of the Trump administration and will inherit a Joint Staff rattled by Trump’s surprise firing of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown.
Caine, a retired F-16 pilot, will be promoted to four-star general, and then have to undergo a potentially grueling Senate confirmation process to get a four-year term as the uniformed head of the nation’s military.
Just last month, Caine joined a venture capital firm known as Shield Capital. His LinkedIn profile showed that starting last month, he was associated with two other investment firms.
UNCONVENTIONAL PICK
Caine’s military career is a far cry from the traditional path to becoming the president’s top military adviser. Previous generals and admirals have led a combatant command or a military branch of service.
Caine did not rise that high in the ranks before retirement. According to Trump, he was “passed over for promotion by Sleepy Joe Biden.”
“But not anymore!”, Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier this year, Caine described on a podcast how as a young man he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, a fighter pilot.
“We started moving around as a kid. So I felt like this was something that I really, really, really wanted to do, was fly jets in the Air Force,” Caine said.
He graduated in 1990 from the Virginia Military Institute with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Caine, who flew more than 2,800 hours in the F-16, was one of the pilots tasked with protecting Washington on September 11, 2001, when al Qaeda hijackers slammed commercial jets into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center in New York City.
Caine realized he might have to shoot down a hijacked plane if one crossed his path.
“I was very mindful that if we made a mistake or if we got it wrong or if we missed somebody and we did not shoot, the consequences of that could be catastrophic,” Caine, who has also flown the T-37 and T-38 aircraft, said in an article posted on the CIA website.
Caine held a number of posts in the capital from 2005. He was a special assistant to the secretary at the Department of Agriculture and then policy director for counterterrorism at the White House’s homeland security council.
According to his official Air Force biography, Caine was a part-time member of the National Guard and “a serial entrepreneur and investor” from 2009 to 2016.
He was most recently the associate director for military affairs at the Central Intelligence Agency, before his retirement late last year.
But it was his time in Iraq from 2018 to 2019 that helped him gain Trump’s attention.
Caine will be under particular scrutiny to ensure that he is apolitical, a concern that was heightened by the Friday night firing of Brown, a four-star general. Uniformed military officials are supposed to be loyal to the U.S. Constitution and independent of any party or political movement.
A senior U.S. military official who has worked with Caine for more than a decade said he would seek to keep the military out of politics.
Caine “puts the mission and troops above politics. He is not a political guy,” the official said.
The official added that when Caine found out he would be picked for the top job by Trump, his first concern was that Brown was taken care of and treated with respect.
How far Cain can keep the military out of politics may largely depend on Trump – who in the past has dragged the military into partisan issues.
In a recent re-telling of their first meeting in Iraq, Trump said that Caine was in the hangar where service members started putting on “Make America Great Again” hats.
“They all put on the Make America Great Again hat. Not supposed to do it,” Trump said during a speech last year.
“I said, ‘you’re not supposed to do that. You know that.’ They said, ‘It’s OK, sir. We don’t care.'”
(This story has been refiled to correct Caine’s field of study in paragraph 14)

Twisted Tower combines BioShock and Disney World in one package
Twisted Tower combines BioShock and Disney World in one package
From the onset, Twisted Tower wears its inspirations on its sleeve, it’s very obviously heavily inspired by the likes of BioShock and that is something I adore. Developed by Atmos Games and published by 3D Realms (yes, that 3D Realms), this is a game that I can’t wait to see more of.
Not Your Everyday Disney Trip
After spending time playing through the demo, all things click into place; the gameplay, story, and atmosphere all scream BioShock in the best ways possible. With a minimum of two playthroughs to see it all, this demo gives me — and anyone who plays it — a taste of what’s to come as we step into the shoes of Tiny, a man on a quest to win treasures beyond our wildest dreams, only to find that your lost love is trapped in the tower at the hands of Mr. Twisted.
The gameplay loop sees you blast through warped mascot enemies with upgradable weaponry all thanks to a chap who looks like their face belongs plastered to the machine, with my mind always playing “Welcome to the circus of value” as I look at the upgrades, all for the price tickets, which you can find plenty of sprawled across the hotel floor or looted off the corpses of those you slain.
Circus Of Value
The game takes place in a 1950s environment following a war. After finding out his love left him for a more well-off man, Tiny finds a ticket to “win treasure beyond measure” at Twisted Tower. Just from playing through the demo, it’s obvious something more is going on here — the foes address the protagonist as if they know him, and while obviously Mr. Twisted is that man who his lost love left him for, it’s not clear the motives behind the foe.
Just the little bit of story that we do get is enough to get me invested, and kind of reminds me of the original BioShock with a more forthcoming relationship between the protagonist Jack and guide Atlas. Its atmosphere also exudes that feeling alongside an abandoned and dystopian Disney World vibe. Almost like Walt Disney had some sick desire to see people’s suffering rather than joy when creating his media empire.
Also, you are encouraged to play the game more than once, with different paths opening up during different playthroughs indicated by blocked areas with a large red X. This, I love, I can enjoy linear games that provide choice, and if Twisted Tower does anything that continues that trend, I’ll be a happy (albeit jumpy) guest.
The graphics are solid and character designs are eerie. I’ll say the Splicers made more of an impact and obviously Disney’s line of characters are more marketable, but these bloodthirsty mascots still have a place in the equation.
Don’t Get It Twisted
Now, while the game itself is solid, this demo did have some… issues. During my first playthrough, I got startled (I know, big baby here) by an enemy in the kitchen and stumbled back into a corner… only to fall through the map. There are some small glitches and oddities that I’m sure will be ironed out of the original release, and luckily they are few and far between.
The rest of my issues with the demo are more personal taste that I can easily see being fixed during the final release. I find the game’s mixing to be middling; some parts are pretty quiet while others are deafeningly loud. I also think it’s too easy to get tickets, not only can you find some on the fallen enemies, but also scattered around the level, too. Obviously, I don’t hate the collection aspect itself, it’s a solid enough means to get people to explore, but I think finding a tad less tickets would do the game some good in the end as it makes people consider what the best way forward would be rather than finding all the tickets and blowing them on every upgrade for their favorite weapon (Miss Fire, for the win).
Twisted Conclusion
I do think Twisted Tower can make for an amazing remedy for those looking to get that distinctive BioShock brand of unease. It meshes together a confusing yet engaging plot that will no doubt be fleshed out in the five different levels that will come at launch, as well as simple gameplay that makes it an easy game to pick up and play.
Twisted Tower has no set release date, a demo is freely available on Steam.

How Harry Potter’s Quidditch became a real-life sport
How Harry Potter’s Quidditch became a real-life sport
Victoria Scheer
BBC News, Yorkshire
Giordano Di Pino-Forino
There are several Quadball tournaments for university and community leagues each year
Quaffles, bludgers and the elusive golden snitch – it has been nearly 20 years since Quidditch moved from the pages of Harry Potter to real-life playing fields.
The sport, made famous by JK Rowling’s orphaned wizard, is now known as Quadball and believed to be the only mixed-gender, full-contact sport in the world.
Unlike Harry and co, who would perform hair-raising manoeuvres while soaring through the air on broomsticks, real-life players try to outwit their opponents astride PVC pipes.
While it may have originally been viewed as a sport for hardcore “Potterheads”, Quadball has long transcended the fictional series and carved out its own identity as a competitive sport which continues to keep thousands of players under its spell.
“I don’t even like Harry Potter,” says Sheffield Quadball Club player Henry Patten.
Henry discovered his love for the sport after reluctantly attending a training session in 2021.
“Sports I’ve been in before were all about competitiveness, trying to win at all cost,” the 22-year-old says.
“Quadball is just so much more about inclusivity and having a good time more than anything.”
Warner Bros./Heyday Films/ALAMY
Harry Potter, portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, plays as a seeker
Rowling’s Quidditch is portrayed as a dangerous game, where players frequently endure high-speed collisions and aggressive tactics.
The real-life adaptation, created by students in the United States in 2005, is equally fast-paced and sees so-called chasers trying to throw quaffles – semi-deflated volleyballs – through the opposition’s hoops.
While doing so, they have to avoid being knocked out by bludgers, rubber dodgeballs thrown by beaters.
Perhaps the best-known element of the game is the golden snitch, famously very nearly swallowed by Harry Potter during his first-ever Quidditch match.
But instead of a winged, walnut-sized ball, real-life seekers chase a flag runner dressed in yellow, who has a sock with a tennis ball in attached to their shorts.
Giordano Di Pino-Forino
A flag runner tries to evade the grasp of a seeker to prevent them grabbing the Quadball equivalent of the golden snitch
Sarah Abramson, who plays for Bristol Quadball Club, says Quadball combines disciplines from well-known childhood favourites.
“It’s like if you play dodgeball, soccer and capture the flag all at the same time,” Sarah, who is from the US, says.
“It’s a really visually interesting sport to watch.”
Quadball teams usually comprise three chasers, two beaters, one keeper and one seeker, who play on a pitch roughly half the the size of football field.
Rather than buying a broomstick in Diagon Alley, it is store-bought PVC pipes players use to hold between their legs.
“It’s really fun but it’s also really silly,” Sarah, 25, says.
“You have to have the ability to laugh at yourself.”
Following its inception, Quadball quickly captured hearts and minds across the globe, leading to the emergence of new teams, tournaments and eventually the first World Cup in Oxford in 2012.
Best seekers, chasers, beaters at Quidditch cup
Unusual because of its rules and origin, players say being confronted with questions such as ‘oh, do you fly?’ and ‘is this even a real sport?’ is not uncommon.
Equally, people often underestimate how physically demanding the sport can be, says Chloe Durkin, the president of Olympians Quadball Club Leeds.
“A lot of people who do fitness for the sport say they do high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to put up with it,” they say.
Quadball has earned a reputation for being trans-inclusive and features a gender rule, which limits the number of players of the same gender on the pitch at the same time.
Chloe, who is also the international relations officer for governing body Quadball ***, says playing a mixed-gender, full-contact sport feels “empowering”.
“There is always this assumption that men are stronger than women, but in reality that’s not entirely true,” the 26-year-old says.
“There are lots of men in the community who would still find me a challenging opponent.”
Giordano Di Pino-Forino
Players can be identified by the colour of their headbands. White is for chasers, green for keepers, ****** for beaters and yellow for seekers
While Quadball’s links to the Harry Potter series are undeniable, the sport has taken active steps to move away from the franchise.
In 2022, the decision was made to rename Quidditch to Quadball, in part because of JK Rowling’s comments on gender identity but also due to trademark issues.
At the time, Quadball *** said the name change indicated “a firm stance with our trans players and members” and opened up “greater opportunities for funding”.
Sheffield Quadball Club player Izzy Hecks says the Harry Potter association is no longer “a marketing point” when it comes to recruitment.
“The books probably are a big factor why people know about the sport, but I’d like to think people are discovering it through other sources now.”
Sheffield Quadball Club
Sheffield Quadball Club players say the sport is for people of all backgrounds and abilities
For some players, like James Martin, Quadball presented an attractive alternative to other full-contact sports, like rugby.
The Warwick Quadball Club president and coach says: “It’s much more fun because you get a lot more of the ball and freedom of movement.
“I actually stopped playing rugby because I got much more into Quadball.”
Michael Ansell, who used to play American Football, says he signed up to the Oxford Mammoths in 2013 as “almost like a joke”.
“Looking back, it’s the best joke that I ever went through with,” the 30-year-old says.
“It’s the only sport I’ve ever played that you can turn up as a new person and you forget you didn’t know anyone before because they take you in so willingly.”
Sam
Sam (blue trousers) at his first-ever Quidditch match in Oxford in 2012
Since the coronavirus pandemic, recruitment has been challenging for both community and university teams, with some clubs even on hiatus.
Oxford Mammoths player Sam believes better collaboration between societies and targeting non-students could sustain growth.
Sam was 12 when he watched the British Quadball Cup in Oxford in 2012 and is now a proud player himself.
Despite the current challenges, the 23-year-old is optimistic about the future of the sport.
“I think we are struggling to figure out how to sell it, but I think it can be done,” he says.
“I refuse to believe that a whimsical sport like this is losing popularity.”

Ashley St Clair: Mother of Elon Musk’s 13th child sues for custody
Ashley St Clair: Mother of Elon Musk’s 13th child sues for custody
Elon Musk is being sued by the woman who claims she gave birth to his 13th child.
Influencer Ashley St Clair, 26, asked a judge to award her sole custody of the baby boy and demanded Mr Musk take a paternity test to prove the child is his.
In documents filed on Friday in New York’s Supreme Court, Ms St Clair said she and Mr Musk “started a romantic relationship in or about May 2023” while on the Caribbean island of St. Barts.
She said: “I did not have ******* intercourse with any other male during the time the child was conceived. I am requesting an order for genetic testing to determine the paternity of the child.”
She says their son – identified in legal documents as R.S.C. – was born in September 2024 and that billionaire Mr Musk, 53, had seen him only three times.
In court documents obtained by the MoS, Ms St Clair claims he texted her following the birth to say “I want to knock you up again”’ and “Well, we do have a legion of kids to make”.
She included a photograph of Mr Musk holding their infant son in the filed court documents.
Ms St Clair said: “I had ******* intercourse with the respondent on or about the second day of January 2024 and on or about the third day of January 2024 in various locations… during which time our child was conceived.”
Mr Musk allegedly warned her not to reveal he had fathered a child for security reasons, texting: “If I make a mistake on security, R. will never know his father. I get credible death threats every day. I’m #2 after Trump for assassination.
“This is not the time for sentiment at the expense of security. Only the paranoid survive.”
The court documents contained an unsigned copy of a legal agreement purportedly between Ms St Clair and Mr Musk in which he agrees to take a paternity test within six months of the baby’s birth and, if he is proved to be the father, the child would take the surname Musk.
The Tesla and SpaceX boss, the richest man in the world, was not present at the birth and “hasn’t expressed any interest in having custody”.
Mr Musk is yet to comment on Ms St Clair’s claims.
She says he met the baby twice in New York, where she lives in a luxury apartment and drives a Tesla truck, and later in Austin, Texas, where Mr Musk has a home.
Mr Musk had six children with first wife Justine Wilson, one of whom died at ten weeks old.
He has three children with singer Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, an executive at his company Neuralink.
This week, Grimes posted publicly on X – the social media site owned by Mr Musk – claiming one of their children was suffering an “urgent medical crisis”.
She wrote in a since-deleted post: “I am sorry to do this publicly but it is no longer acceptable to ignore this situation.”
Mr Musk didn’t respond to multiple calls for comment last night.

One airman dead, another injured after shooting incident at Kirtland Air Force Base
One airman is dead and another is injured with a gunshot wound following a “shooting incident” involving security forces at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico early Saturday.
Security forces assigned to the 377th Security Forces Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base responded to “an incident” at around 2 a.m. Saturday, which led to the shooting, the base said in a statement.
The injured airman was shot in the hand and transported to the University of New Mexico Medical Center for treatment, the base said. He has since been released.
The other airman was found dead at the scene, KAFB said.
“The cause of death and the incident remains under investigation by local authorities,” the base said in the release.
In an update on Facebook, the base said “officials are investigating an incident that occurred early this morning near Kirtland Air Force Base,” though it was not immediately clear which officials are leading the investigation or where exactly it occurred.
The base said there is no threat to the public or to base personnel at this time, and that the Truman Gate and the Truman Visitor Center are closed until further notice.
No other details were released by the base regarding the incident.

‘I learned the hard way about parking near beauty spot’
‘I learned the hard way about parking near beauty spot’

While taking part in Dry January, Chelsea Coltart visited places across the *** – swapping nightlife for fresh air
A woman who drove to the Peak District for a hike – only to return to her car to find it damaged and with a parking ticket – is warning others to learn from her mistakes.
Chelsea Coltart, 28, was visiting Mam Tor on 18 January to catch a glimpse of the sunrise, after seeing videos of the beauty spot on social media.
After completing a circular route, the marketing manager discovered the fine, along with the damaged car that had been parked in a no stopping zone.
“Following other cars on the day was probably my biggest regret and I’ll never do that again,” she added.
Chelsea found a parking fine on her windscreen and damage to the front of her car
Roads in the national park have recently been blighted by parking issues, including on 11 January when “around 200 cars” prevented gritting from taking place.
On Friday, calls were made to bring together MPs, councils and emergency services in order to tackle the problem.
Chelsea, from Milton Keynes, said she initially did not notice any clear signage when trying to find a space.
“I don’t think there is enough guidance on where to park but… we’ve all passed our test and we should know the signs,” she added.
Chelsea believes her car was damaged by a large vehicle trying to pass.
“They must have hit me from the front because the wheel was actually protruding. I got a quote for repairs and it was £2,000,” she said.
Chelsea filmed the moment she found her damaged vehicle and posted the video to her TikTok channel.
A no stopping (clearway) sign near to where Chelsea parked can be seen in a video she filmed and shared on TikTok
“I was looking for a space from 07:30 – just going back and forth doing U-turns – and then parked where all the other cars were at 07:53 and then I got back at 12:30,” she said.
“You couldn’t park anywhere. Every car was up the side of the road. There were cars everywhere. It was awful to be honest.”
According to the Highway Code, a clearway sign means no stopping.
While she admitted accidentally parking next to such a sign, Chelsea believes there is not enough parking provision at the beauty spot and accepts the “frustration” locals must feel.
“I think if places are becoming more popular, which, again is a Catch-22, they need more infrastructure in place such as car parks or more signage,” she said.
“You don’t want to build car parks and damage the natural environment, so it is such a hard balance.”
Cars were parked on both sides of Winnats Pass, near Mam Tor, in the early hours of 18 January
Since Chelsea’s £70 fine and original TikTok video – which has been viewed more than 2.4 million times and attracted more than 1,500 comments – she started to point people in the direction of nearby free parking in the national park.
Those posts prompted a response from Derbyshire Police’s TikTok account, which asked Chelsea to report the incident and said the points she raised were “brilliant”.
Chelsea reported the incident to police, which later said it could not investigate without further information.
Addressing some of the negative comments she received on the social media platform, Chelsea said: “I know emergency vehicles were able to get through, it’s just bad parking.
“You go to a new place and get stick because it’s your first time but you’ve got to start somewhere with everything.
“Everyone has their own struggles in life, you don’t know what someone’s going through.
“Social media, either way, you’re always going to get hate. I do marketing for a living, I know what it’s like. You’ve just got to do damage control.”
Vehicles can be seen passing Chelsea’s car in the video she shared on social media
A spokesperson for the Peak District National Park Authority said: “Dangerous or disruptive parking can affect not only those going about their business in the local area, but also restrict emergency services access or highways maintenance.
“Over 80 car parking locations comprising thousands of spaces are listed on the national park authority website including sat-nav postcodes and other navigation information such as What3Words.”
A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council added: “We continue to have our parking wardens out in those very popular areas which can experience parking issues, such as Mam Tor, seven days a week.
“Blocking roads causes issues for the emergency services, buses, bin lorries, gritting lorries and mountain rescue and we would appeal, yet again, for people to park considerately and in accordance with the highway code.”
Derbyshire Police said it was continuing to work with local councils and partners to devise a long-term solution to the ongoing parking issues in the area.
A spokesperson said: “Most people do manage to park safely, but we have seen dangerous and irresponsible parking from some people in recent weeks, bringing roads to a standstill and hindering emergency services.
“If the parking spaces are full, parking your car dangerously is not an option.”
Reflecting on her experience, Chelsea said she would do “a lot more research and be more considerate of the people that are living in the area”.
“You know, if you don’t plan, you plan to fail,” she added.

Drake in 2010, standing in front of a plane advertising his debut Thank Me Later, a sound his new record revisits
“Gimme a hug, Gimme a hug!,” pleads Drake on one track from his new album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.
After the month and year he’s had, perhaps it’s no surprise.
As rap battle humiliations go, the rapper’s defeat by hip-hop’s lyrical supremo Kendrick Lamar has become a cultural phenomenon, and even seen Drake sue Universal Music Group.
Lamar’s diss track, Not Like Us, a viral hit since last summer, accuses the ********* star of inappropriate relationships with underage girls – claims Drake denies.
First the track swept up at the Grammys, with Taylor Swift and Beyoncé dancing along. Then came Lamar’s Super Bowl half-time show, with a record 133.5 million people estimated to have tuned in to watch the whole stadium sing the lyrics accusing Drake of being a paedophile.
And on Friday the single finally topped the *** charts nine months after release, matching its stateside success.
But rather than lay low, Drake, the dominant chart-topper of the past 15 years, is coming out fighting with an “intriguing” strategy after being put in a “cultural chokehold”, says crisis PR expert Mark Borkowski.
As Lamar grins through the bright lights of his victory lap, Drake’s chosen to sidestep the beef – bar one embittered freestyle denouncing fake friends – and instead focused on repositioning himself.

Kendrick Lamar performed his Drake diss track Not Like Us at his Super Bowl half-time show
Currently on tour in Australia, he’s been loosening up, gently leaning into the softer image he’s spent recent years trying to toughen, even performing an intimate karaoke bar set of early sultry hits.
Then on Valentine’s Day, almost a week after the Super Bowl, he returned with $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, a full-length collaboration with PartyNextDoor that harks back to his R&B-tinged rise.
Full of trap-soul beats teasing romantic escapades, Borkowski calls it a “calculated retreat into the familiar, comfortable territory” of the more sensitive “certified lover boy” persona that dominated Drake’s initial breakthrough albums like Thank Me Later and 2011’s Take Care.
In the 2010s, Drake was the most-listened to Spotify artist, racking up more than 28 billion streams, with his most popular song, One Dance, played 1.7 billion times alone.
Even if Not Like Us saw the crown slip, he remained the fourth most-streamed artist on the platform last year.
“His reputation might be in tatters within certain circles, but commercially, he remains bulletproof,” says Borkowski.
Commercial chameleon
It helps that Drake harnessed mass appeal by sampling a myriad of genres in his pomp of pop-rap dominance.
His catalogue – boasting 45 *** top 10 singles, (including six number ones), and over 300 hits in the US Hot 100 – inhaled fumes of grime, dancehall and afrobeat.
The camouflage from his status as a commercial chameleon means that “despite the clear L and Not Like Us becoming a defining moment in rap history, Drake keeps moving”, says Borkowski.
On $ome $exy $ongs 4 U’s track Gimme A Hug, Drake seems to wave the white flag in his Kendrick battle saying: “[Expletive] a rap beef, I’m tryna get the party lit.”

It’s worked, too, at least commercially. According to Billboard, Apple Music confirmed $ome $exy $ongs 4 U’s release broke first-day R&B streaming records on the platform.
In Friday’s official *** charts, the album came in at number three.
Three of its songs also made up the top 40 – including Gimme A Hug.
Critical reception, meanwhile, has been mixed. Vulture described it as “yearning pre-beef star finding his footing”, with a sound “conscientiously re-establishing” his earlier aesthetic.
Rolling Stone’s Jeff Ihaza, in a three-and-a-half-star review, spoke of a “return to form from an artist whose back was truly against the wall”.
Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre, however, was scathing, lambasting “a desperate album from one of rap’s most notorious narcissists”.
Regardless, Borkowski is clear on the strategy – Gimme A Hug, like the album, isn’t a response track, it’s an abdication from the fight. A recognition that Drake can still win, just on a different rap turf.
Nostalgia trip
So, where is Drake headed if he’s conceding the rap battlefield? The answer is the nostalgia play.
Weeks before the release of this new album, Drake opened his *********** tour by coming out on stage in a vest with smoking bullet holes. He closed the show by declaring: “My name is Drake, I started in 2008, I came all the way from Toronto, Canada. The year is now 2025, and Drizzy Drake is very much still alive.”

For music and culture journalist Manu Ekanayake, the new album revisiting his early 2010s era, when he “sounded confident in what he was trying to do”, mirrors this.
But, he warns, “after three recent albums of being the least convincing tough guy in town, can he really go back to being the singing party boy?”.
He’s certainly going to try. Days after the album drop, Drake announced an unprecedented three-night takeover of London’s Wireless Festival this summer, with each night’s set focusing on a different part of his career.
Organisers confirmed the dates sold out in record time. For Borkowski, this is a “masterclass in reframing”.
“Drake is curating his own legacy, reminding people of his longevity, and shifting the conversation away from defeat and back to dominance.”
Ekanayake is less sure of the long-term potential: “Now at 38, it all sounds very different from when he was in the first flush of success in his 20s.
“What seemed before like a young artist giving hip-hop a new approach for a new generation, now sounds like it’s the end of something.”
Luke Dyson
Drake’s upcoming Wireless takeover is a “masterclass in reframing” says Borkowski
But, ultimately, Borkowski goes back to the bottom line. “His fans aren’t music purists, they’re Drake fans – here for the lifestyle, the vibes, and the brand. And as long as he delivers that, nothing truly sticks.”
The true power move? Securing Live Nation for his rebrand, says Borkowski.
“It’s about staying relevant, ensuring the hits don’t stop and keeping the machine running. In today’s music industry, perception is currency, and despite the setbacks, Drake is still cashing in.”
Good thing too, as Lamar’s Not Like Us shows no signs of slowing down on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Compton star’s already made US history by becoming the first rapper to have three albums in the Billboard top 10 – with his latest release GNX also number one.
The battle may be over, but the chart war has just begun.

More woe for Rabbitohs as Dodd faces ban for high shot
More woe for Rabbitohs as Dodd faces ban for high shot
South Sydney’s woes continue to mount ahead of the NRL season with import halfback Lewis Dodd facing suspension for a high tackle.
Already struggling to find his groove with his new side, Dodd faces a ban of one to two matches for his shot on St George-Illawarra’s four-try star Sione Finau after being charged by the match review committee on Sunday.
Dodd did not return after halftime as the injury-hit Rabbitohs were thumped 46-26 in Saturday’s Charity Shield clash in Mudgee and he was retrospectively sin-binned by the bunker – an initiative being trialled during the pre-season challenge.
The Englishman was already under pressure for the No.7 jersey after Jamie Humphreys excelled at halfback in the second stanza, scoring a try and registering and two try assists to make a compelling case to partner Cody Walker.
Dodd now faces being banned for South Sydney’s opening-round clash with coach Wayne Bennett’s former club the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium on March 6 unless he can successfully contest the charge.
South Sydney were already reeling from news earlier in the week of long-term injuries for captain Cameron Murray and star fullback Latrell Mitchell.
Bulldogs forward Josh Curran is also facing a 1-2 match match after being charged with a careless high tackle on Jack Gosiewski in his team’s 30-14 trial loss to Brisbane on Saturday.

‘PM lays down peace demand’ and ‘New breed of danger dogs’
The Prince and Princess of Wales are “very popular” with the *********** public, the Sunday Express reports. According to the paper, republicanism in the country is on a decline after the King and Queen visited last year. Elsewhere on the front page, the paper hails England’s nail-biting win against Scotland in the Six Nations.
The Sunday People also reports on the royals, but for a different reason. The paper says a lawyer for victims of deceased US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has called on King Charles to encourage his brother, Prince Andrew, to “tell the truth” about his friendship with Epstein.
England rugby player Maro Itoje is splashed over the front page of the Sunday Telegraph, as they too report on the team’s tense defeat of Scotland. However, the paper leads on a story about the prime minister’s reported plans to increase the ***’s military spending, ahead of a meeting with Donald Trump about Ukraine this week.
Defence Secretary John Healey is quoted on the front page of the Sunday Times, as the paper also leads on the war in Ukraine. Healey warns that an “insecure peace” deal for Ukraine risks further war with Russia. The defence secretary’s words come ahead of a pivotal week for peace negotiations.
The Observer teases an interview with Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, who says she has new passion for acting, after starring in more complex roles. The paper also covers Sir Keir Starmer’s trip to Washington DC next week.
A plain-clothes police officer shows his identification card in a doorbell camera picture on the front of the Mail on Sunday. The paper accuses police of a “chilling clampdown” on free speech, after reportedly turning up at the home of a grandmother who had criticised Labour councillors on Facebook.
The Sun leads on a story about celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo, quoting a female former television producer. The producer alleges that D’Acampo drew an explicit picture of her during the filming of a live show. The chef has previously faced a number of allegations of inappropriate and intimidating behaviour, all of which he has denied.
The Sunday Mirror warns readers of a violent breed of dog from Asia, the “Bully Kutta”. The paper alleges the dogs are coming into the *** and “taking over” from the XL Bully, ownership of which is restricted in the *** under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
In a more favourable story for dogs, the Daily Star says that “wives and girlfriends” prefer canines to human men. The paper suggests this is because dogs are more dependable and “less whiffy”.

Ether Price Spikes Further on Reports of Bybit Starting to Buy ETH
Ether Price Spikes Further on Reports of Bybit Starting to Buy ETH
The price of the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, ether (ETH), has risen by more than 2.3% in the last 24 hours, while the broader CoinDesk 20 Index has risen by just 0.76% during the same *******. Bitcoin is down around 0.3%.
The rise comes amid reports that Bybit, the cryptocurrency exchange that was hacked for $1.5 billion worth of ether and staked ether by North Korean hacking group Lazarus, has moved 100 million USDT into new addresses and moved half of that into addresses to purchase 36,900 ETH over-the-counter.
The funds, worth around $101 million, were then moved to addresses tagged as belonging to the cryptocurrency exchange, crypto journalist Colin Wu reported, citing, Arkham Intelligence data. Bybit’s CEO Ben Zhou reportedly said in an “ask me anything” session that the company’s assets are “far greater than $1.5 billion,” adding that “there is a cold wallet in safe with nearly 3 billion US dollars in USDT,” according to the same source.
Bybit’s hacker is now holdings an estimated 489,000 ETH valued at approximately $1.34 billion, around 0.4% of ether’s total supply, which makes it the 14th-largest holder of the cryptocurrency.
The addresses associated with the hacker are now closely monitored in the space and are blacklisted by major cryptocurrency exchanges.
“The stolen funds have already been marked, making it extremely difficult for the hacker to use them. Any attempt to transfer these funds to a major exchange would result in an immediate block,” StealthEX CEO Maria Carola told CoinDesk.
Since the hacker may not be able to use the funds in any way, some analysts are suggesting that the 0.4% of the ETH supply it holds is “essentially gone.”

Singer-songwriter John Legend famously sang, “We’re just ordinary people,” but he and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, have far-from-ordinary bank accounts.
It’s just as well because after the L.A. wildfires, the soulful crooner, 46, told The Wall Street Journal, the family is considering saying goodbye to the West Coast and returning to New York.
“Watching TV in the family room, our fears grew. When the Sunset fire began to expand on Jan. 9, the danger felt too close for comfort,” he told The Journal. “That night, my wife and I gathered our four kids, four dogs, and bearded dragon and drove south to a hotel in Carlsbad. We didn’t return until the following week,” he said. “Our home was safe, but many weren’t so fortunate, and the threat still looms. The fires were a collective trauma that shook everyone, including our kids.”
Don’t Miss:
Legend added, “Chrissy and I have always considered returning to New York, where we once lived. We probably will, once our youngest ones grow up a bit.”
The Ivy League-educated singer, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and his wife are estimated to have a net worth that hovers around $100 million, according to multiple websites, the accuracy of which cannot be verified. The following calculations help shed light on this lofty number.
They have an expansive real estate portfolio, including a $5.1 million West Hollywood home and a $17.5 million Beverly Hills mansion. They sold their two New York City penthouses for $16.8 Million in June 2022.
Another source of income not usually mentioned in net worth round-ups is Legend’s music publishing. In 2022, he sold the rights to his music to an alliance of KKR & Co. and BMG. The financial terms were not disclosed.
In 2020, Variety estimated that Legend’s disparate income streams, including LVE, his Napa Valley wine brand, see he “earns between $50 million and $100 million per year from his various projects.”

Thunder-like booms rattled Southeast Boise this week. Here’s where the blasts came from
Thunder-like booms rattled Southeast Boise this week. Here’s where the blasts came from
Thunder-like booms rippled through Southeast Boise this week, shaking homes, rattling windows and leaving dozens of nearby residents wondering, “What was that?”
Some figured it was related to the work going on at Micron. The company is constructing a big new plant at its headquarters off South Federal Way, which it broke ground on in late 2022, and has been notorious for using explosives to occasionally blast bedrock at the site over the last few years.
But that wasn’t the source of the booms heard around 5 p.m. nearly every day this week.
“It startled me so bad that I threw my drink up in the air,” one resident said Wednesday evening on Nextdoor, an app where neighbors can discuss local news. Residents of Warm Springs Mesa, Painted Ridge, Breckenridge and other subdivisions in the area reported hearing the blasts.
“Our whole house shook,” another user said.
So what was the culprit?
Idaho Power is building a new segment of a transmission line to connect Micron’s new substation to the existing grid, according to Sven Berg, a spokesperson for the company. The project involves using implosives to connect wires on that segment, hence the loud booms heard by those who live nearby. The company has kept Micron and Painted Ridge, the closest subdivision, apprised of the work, he said.
Implosives are devices used in power line construction. They create strong connections between electrical conductors by using a sleeve containing a small explosive charge that, when detonated, implodes and permanently seals the conductors together, according to a video from Manitoba Hydro.
“It makes a more reliable and durable connection than traditional splicing,” Berg said by email.
Idaho Power did some implosive blasting at the site in fall 2023 and started up again in December. Most of the blasting has been on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, he said. This week, however, it was done Monday through Thursday.
The good news is that the blasting for the project is now complete.
