  1. Botic bags another as Western United beat Adelaide Botic bags another as Western United beat Adelaide Noah Botic has underlined his case for a Socceroos call-up, scoring as Western United rocketed to third on the A-League Men ladder with a 3-0 win over Adelaide United. Botic joined Sydney FC star Joe Lolley (nine goals) at the top of the golden boot standings with a clean finish in the 26th minute at Ironbark Fields on Sunday. Hiroshi Ibusuki added a second from the penalty spot in the 59th minute before Riku Danzaki sealed all three points in the 88th. In the process, United (29 points) bounced back from a 2-0 loss to leaders Auckland FC (39 points) and jumped to within two points of the second-placed Reds. United were celebrating coach John Aloisi’s 100th game at the helm and dominated from the outset, with talented winger Abel Walatee impressing. It paid off when Matt Grimaldi launched a wonderful crossfield ball to Walatee on the left. The winger cut the ball back to Ben Garuccio, who cleverly lifted it into the path of Botic to tap home. Only Adelaide goalkeeper Ethan Cox stopped Western from doubling their lead in a dominant first half, while the visitors’ youngster Harry Crawford hit the side netting in the 34th minute. Western earned their chance to double their lead when Isaias legged Ibusuki in the area. The former Adelaide striker made no mistake from the spot. Riku Danzaki came on in the 71st minute and almost scored straight away, only to be brilliantly denied by Cox. Adelaide had a rare chance when Amlani Tatu forced Western goalkeeper Matt Sutton into a diving save in the 75th. The home side sealed victory when Angus Thurgate’s corner deflected out to Garuccio, who switched the play for Jordy Lauton. The youngster found Danzaki, who turned onto his left and fired a shot that slipped through Cox’s fingers. Western next take on Central Coast away on Friday while Adelaide travel to Auckland on Saturday. 3. Cowboys cruise to big win over Storm in final NRL trial Cowboys cruise to big win over Storm in final NRL trial Melbourne’s enviable round one record is at risk after a winless pre-season but the signs are promising for North Queensland after a thumping 36-24 victory over the Storm in their NRL trial. Both teams entered their final pre-season game in Melbourne with most of their stars on board, with the Cowboys taking plenty of confidence after the rousing victory over the 2024 grand finalists. Fullback Scott Drinkwater bagged two tries among his side’s seven, while young halfback Thomas Duffy looks certain to make his NRL debut in round one after an impressive showing. Teenager Jaxon Purdue reassured North Queensland coach Todd Payten that there’s life after Valentine Holmes, scoring a try in a convincing display in the centres. John Bateman also showed he will be a handy acquisition, with the 31-year-old Englishman heavily involved. Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy won’t be happy with his team’s outing as they build toward a round one meeting against the Jason Ryles-coached Parramatta. Bellamy is looking to keep his remarkable record of never having lost an opening-round match alive, with the stretch currently at 21 straight wins. Playing in Casey in outer south-east Melbourne, the home side were guilty of some sloppy ballwork and poor discipline, with skipper Harry Grant sin-binned midway through the first half after repeated team infringements. North Queensland pushed out to an 18-10 lead by halftime, with the scoreline blowing out in the second half as Melbourne’s defence fell away when they emptied their bench. The scoreline was out to 36-10 before Melbourne saved their blushes by scoring three late tries through youngster Keagan Russell-Smith, star siging Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore, who crossed in the 80th minute. Play was temporarily halted with 15 minutes left when young fullback Hugo Peel was knocked out in a collision with teammate Coby Williamson, with the 19-year-old taken off the field in an ambulance. Initial reports suggested this was merely a precautionary measure, but the Storm had earlier lost starting fullback Sua Faalago to a tight hamstring. First choice No.1 Ryan Papenhuyzen is also in doubt for round one after sitting out the trial with lower leg soreness. 5. Anthony Scaramucci Hints at Putin and the KGB’s Mystery ‘Hold’ Over Trump Anthony Scaramucci Hints at Putin and the KGB’s Mystery ‘Hold’ Over Trump Anthony Scaramucci expressed concerns about his old boss Donald Trump and his “weird” relationship with Vladimir Putin on Friday. Scaramucci, who briefly served as Trump’s White House communications director in 2017, discussed Trump’s approach to the Russian president during an episode of “The Rest Is Politics US” podcast with co-host Katty Kay. Kay teased that the discussion would explore what leverage Russian Putin might have over Trump, and asked Scaramucci why he thinks Trump is now pinning the blame for the war on Ukraine. “My silence is because what I really think is not in the mainstream,” Scaramucci replied. “And so what I really think, if I end up saying it on our podcast, people will say, OK, I’m being absurd. OK, so—but I think there’s a hold on him.” Scaramucci did not elaborate on what he believes that “hold” might be, adding only: “I don’t know why it’s like this. [H.R.] McMaster couldn’t figure it out, [James] Mattis couldn’t figure it out, [John] Kelly couldn’t figure it out.” The Daily Beast has reached out to the White House for comment. A little over a month into his second term, Trump has done a 180 on Washington, D.C.’s stance on the three-year-old war in Ukraine. He has blamed Kyiv for starting the conflict, cast doubt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s legitimacy, downplayed Russia’s war aims, and backtracked on U.S. support for Kyiv. Tensions between Trump and Zelensky escalated further this week when Trump took to Truth Social, calling the Ukrainian leader a “dictator without elections.” He demanded wartime elections in Ukraine, despite the fact that martial law—imposed in response to Putin’s invasion—has prohibited them from taking place. Scaramucci said he and other officials in Trump’s first administration would talk about Trump’s relationship with Russia. / Anadolu / Getty Images Scaramucci didn’t hold back—he called Trump’s relationship with Putin “weird” and blasted him for pushing Kremlin narratives. “It’s the 30th day in, he’s literally reciting Putin talking points at press conferences,” said Scaramucci. Kay asked Scaramucci if he and other officials would talk about Trump’s relationship with Russia during his first administration. “Yes,” Scaramucci said. “Somebody last night from the former administration texted me. It’s weird the relationship with Putin. It’s just weird.“ “Let’s say let’s give President Trump the benefit of the doubt,” he went on. “You would say, OK, he’s obviously the American president. He can’t be in the tank for Vladimir Putin. But then as you know, from the KGB, they do everything out in the open, OK? So that’s part of their technique, right?” Scaramucci also appeared to reference a Feb. 19 article by Alexander Dugin, a far-right Russian ideologue dubbed ‘Putin’s Brain’ for his supposed influence on the Russian leader, titled “Ukraine Talks Require New World Order Clarity.” In an overblown claim, Scaramucci suggested the piece all but states that Trump is under the control of Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “Alexander Dugin, who is a very famous inside of Russia philosopher, he wrote a piece which I sent to you… he basically said that Lavrov is running Trump—Lavrov will be briefing Trump on what to do here to establish this new world order, which is a post-Soviet, but pro-Russian—Russia controls the Eastern European Theater,” said Scaramucci. In the article, Dugin simply wrote: “It is worth noting the very serious, high level of our delegation [at talks between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia]. These are Yuri Ushakov and Sergey Lavrov, Putin’s closest associates in international politics and completely, totally in agreement with [Trump]. And therefore, it is they who will help our president prepare for this meeting.” In another piece, Dugin wrote that Lavrov had “for the first time objectively, calmly, and with reasoned arguments conveyed the Russian position to the Americans,” adding that such a feat was “a novelty, as there had been no negotiations previously, and Russia’s position in the U.S. was conveyed in a completely distorted form. Therefore, this is not just a breakthrough but a monumental one.” Even Scaramucci second-guessed his own interpretation, asking Kay, “Am I being too aggressive by saying this?” He added: “You gotta tell me… cause I don’t want people to say, oh, you know, he’s, he’s got Trump derangement… I don’t have Trump derangement syndrome. I have Trump reality syndrome. I’m just telling you what we all saw, what we’re all worried about.” Source link #Anthony #Scaramucci #Hints #Putin #KGBs #Mystery #Hold #Trump Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  8. Backlash leads Republican attorneys general to declare support for a landmark disability rights law Backlash leads Republican attorneys general to declare support for a landmark disability rights law TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican state attorneys general are declaring their continued support for a landmark federal law protecting disabled people’s rights, after parents expressed fears of losing services for their disabled children because of a GOP lawsuit opposing transgender rights. The attorneys general of 17 states, led by Texas, told a federal judge this week that a lawsuit they filed in September targets only a rule imposed last year by then-President Joe Biden’s administration declaring that transgender Americans are protected by a 1973 law barring discrimination against disabled people. The state officials said they are not attacking — and have never attacked — the law itself, which requires institutions receiving federal funds to make accommodations for disabled people. The states’ lawsuit attracted little attention until about a month ago, when disability rights advocates first publicly highlighted parts they saw as potentially wiping out decades’ worth of legal protections for disabled people. The alarmed parents included John and Tayler Cantrell of Topeka, whose 4-year-old son, Cooper, has a medical condition that left half his brain dead at birth, and they see the anti-discrimination law as crucial for him and other children to thrive. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “It levels the playing field, giving every child, no matter their challenges, a fighting chance,” John Cantrell said during a news conference this week called by Democratic legislators. The states are challenging a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services rule imposed in May. It says that under federal anti-discrimination laws, a disability can include gender dysphoria, which is the distress people feel when their gender identity doesn’t match the gender assigned at birth. The states fear losing federal funds for not recognizing transgender residents’ gender identities. One count in the lawsuit is titled, “Section 504 is Unconstitutional,” referring to the key section of the 1973 anti-discrimination law, and another line asks a judge to bar HHS from “enforcing Section 504.” But the attorneys general said those words apply only to the specific rule. “I think a lot of people who are not used to reading legal complaints took that to mean something else,” said Jeff LeMaster, a spokesperson for Attorney General Tim Griffin in Arkansas, one of the states involved. In their filing, the attorneys general also said their lawsuit is on hold while President Donald Trump’s administration reviews the HHS rule. Trump has issued executive orders targeting transgender rights, and his administration could repeal the HHS rule. Iowa’s Republican attorney general, Brenna Bird, argued that the Biden administration pursued the rule at the expense of disabled children. “I am suing to make certain kids, and Americans with disabilities, have the support they need to succeed,” Bird said in a statement. But Kansas state Rep. Alexis Simmons, a Topeka Democrat, said Republican officials’ zeal for targeting transgender people led them to also attack disabled Americans. “It was our duty to amplify the voices of our constituents,” she said. “For them to be heard and action taken is exactly what we wanted.” Source link #Backlash #leads #Republican #attorneys #general #declare #support #landmark #disability #rights #law Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  10. Germans head to the polls in critical election with far-right gains expected Germans head to the polls in critical election with far-right gains expected The ******* parliament convenes for its last regular session before the general election. Michael Kappeler | Picture Alliance | Getty Images Germans headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in the 2025 federal election, which is all but guaranteed to result in a new chancellor taking over from Olaf Scholz to lead Europe’s largest economy. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its affiliate the Christian Social Union (CSU) have been polling in first place in the lead-up to the election, putting their lead candidate Friedrich Merz in line for chancellorship. The far-right Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD) is expected to come second in line, ahead of Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens, which have also been part of the most recent ruling coalition that collapsed late last year. This marks a shift from the 2021 election, when the SPD came out on top, followed by the CDU/CSU. The AfD clinched fourth place at the time. Germans will cast two votes at the polls, one to directly elect a member of parliament to represent their constituency and one for a party list. The second vote will determine the proportional make-up of the ******* Parliament, the Bundestag, with parties sending their candidates to Berlin to ensure representation. There is also a 5% threshold that parties need to meet to deploy delegates to the Bundestag. Several of the smaller parties, including The Left, the Free Democratic Party (****) and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), have long been polling around this mark, with The Left picking up slightly in recent days. Coalition building Attention will shift to the coalition building process after the vote. It is rare for a ******* party to obtain an absolute majority, and whichever group secures the largest number of seats in parliament usually still has to find governance partners to secure a ruling majority. This process can take weeks or even months — parties hold extensive negotiations before then inking a coalition agreement detailing their joint policy positions and plans. “Latest polls indicate that the Conservatives (CDU/CSU) will receive the highest share of votes, but they will need one or two (unlikely) coalition partners, likely the SPD and/or the Greens,” Deutsche Bank analysts said in a note earlier this week. All major parties have said that they will not enter a coalition with the far-right AfD. The party’s result will still be watched closely due to its growth in popularity, despite a string of controversies and investigations into its conduct, which have also triggered nationwide protests. The smaller parties will also be in focus this election — their entry into parliament could influence whether a third coalition partner is needed to form a majority government. They could also be key if the new government wants to make any changes to the constitution, which require the support of a two-thirds majority that the smaller parties could effectively block from happening. Early elections The election is taking place several months earlier than originally planned due to the break-up of the so-called traffic light coalition — which was comprised of Scholz’ SPD, the Green party and the **** — in November. The alliance had been in power since taking over from long-standing chancellor Angela Merkel in 2021. Months of political wrangling and disagreements within the coalition about economic, fiscal and budget policy ultimately led to the government’s collapse, as Scholz fired former Finance Minister Christian Lindner. Steps were then taken to trigger a snap election — which has only happened three other times in Germany’s history. Scholz first had to call for a confidence vote in himself in the country’s parliament, before suggesting the the latter’s dissolution to ******* President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. 14. Perth Lynx MVP Ally Wilson demanding better start for her team after WNBL finals loss to Townsville Fire Perth Lynx MVP Ally Wilson demanding better start for her team after WNBL finals loss to Townsville Fire Perth Lynx MVP is demanding her team approaches the start to games with greater intensity after another sloppy opening quarter cost them during Saturday’s semifinal loss to Townsville. The Lynx lost the opening game of the best-of-three series 92-87 and paid a high price for trailing by 11 points at quarter time. Perth have won only two of their last six first terms and have trailed by double-figure margins during three of those matches. The Lynx fought back and took the lead in the final quarter on Saturday, but couldn’t land the knock out blow at the Bendat Basketball Centre. With their season now on the line, Wilson said everyone had to understand the importance of being ready to play. “It’s definitely our starts. Energy and effort on defence is the key for us, then we can get out and run a bit more. The good thing is I think a lot of the stuff is energy and effort. It’s very changeable. It’s not we don’t have the talent,” Wilson said Camera IconPerth Lynx MVP Ally Wilson. Credit: James Worsfold/Getty Images “Our starts are nowhere near good enough, I think we come out and play a little bit blase to try to get feel for the game. We’ve got to come out on the front foot and be better next game for sure. “We have players that are big game players and it’s like ‘the game is on the line, now we’ll kick into gear.’ We can’t be doing that at this time of the season.” Wilson led the way for the Lynx with a career-high 32 points while also producing nine assists. She and Fire import Nia Coffey had an enthralling battle but the Townsville star prevailed with 36 points in an awesome shooting display. Lynx coach Ryan Petrik said Wilson coudln’t have done any more for her team. Camera IconAlly Wilson in action. Credit: James Worsfold/Getty Images “Elite. Really good. She saved our backside multiple times. For what feels like the 22nd time this year, showed everyone why we wanted her so badly in a Perth jersey,” he said. The Lynx must now travel to Townsville on Wednesday and win to keep the series alive. Perth beat the Fire in Queensland last weekend and won a semifinal on the same court last season which Wilson believes will hold them in good stead. Camera IconAmy Atwell dives for the ball. Oleksandr Usyk’s next fight: Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel – who next for world champion? According to Dubois’ promoter, Queensberry’s Frank Warren, the heavyweight was devastated to be pulled from the Parker bout. It would have been Dubois’ second defence and he was due to earn a massive purse. He keeps his belt of course. But while one door closes, another might have opened for Dubois. We had thought the 28-year-old, should he have beaten Parker, would push for a rematch with Usyk. Considering the boxing schedule and recovery time, it could have been quite the wait but now the Briton’s next fight could be the undisputed meeting with the 38-year-old Usyk. With no mandatory challenger currently listed for Dubois’ IBF title, he remains free to select his next opponent and Usyk has already said he wants to do it. It would be heartbreak for Parker, 33, who has spent nearly seven years fighting his way back towards a world title fight. Bakole, who is ranked number three with the IBF, was set to fight Efe Ajagba on 2 May but that fight is now in doubt after his second-round stoppage loss to Parker.
