Amid Regional Diplomatic Furor, Sudan’s Paramilitaries Forge a Rival Government
The Rapid Support Forces, the paramilitary group fighting Sudan’s military in the country’s calamitous civil war, signed a political charter with its allies late Saturday that aimed to establish a parallel Sudanese government in areas under their control.
The paramilitaries said the agreement, which was signed in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, would pave the way for peace after nearly two years of a war that has killed thousands of people and set off a devastating famine. Critics called it an audacious gambit by a group that the United States has accused of genocide, and warned that the charter could further splinter Sudan.
The charter’s signatories included the deputy leader of the S.P.L.M.-N., a secular-minded rebel group that stayed out of the war until last week. Now it is firmly aligned with the Rapid Support Forces, more often referred to as the R.S.F.
The most immediate effect, though, was diplomatic. Triumphant appearances by R.S.F. leaders — many of them accused of war crimes and under American sanctions — in Kenya’s capital this past week set off a bitter public row between the two countries. Sudan’s military-led government accused Kenya of “disgraceful” behavior that it said was “tantamount to an act of hostility” and withdrew its ambassador from Nairobi in protest.
Kenya’s Foreign Ministry said it sought only to provide “a platform for key stakeholders” from Sudan, and to halt “the tragic slide of Sudan into anarchy.” Still, many in Kenya condemned the talks as a political blunder by President William Ruto, and called on him to reverse course.
The Kenyan chapter of the International Commission of Jurists said Mr. Ruto was “complicit in mass atrocities against the Sudanese people.” One Kenyan newspaper denounced the R.S.F.’s leader, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan, as “The Butcher” on its front page.
After holding a lavish political event in Kenya’s main convention center on Tuesday, the signing ceremony on Saturday occurred behind closed doors. A video supplied by an R.S.F. official showed the group’s deputy leader, Abdul Rahim Dagalo, holding aloft a copy of the charter in a hall filled with mostly turbaned delegates, some of whom pumped their fists in the air.
An Arabic-language version of the charter, a 16-page document, seen by The New York Times, called for a “secular, democratic and decentralized state” in Sudan that would respect the religious and ethnic identity of all citizens.
But many Sudanese question the R.S.F.’s ability, or even desire, to govern in such a manner. R.S.F. fighters have a reputation for brutality and abuses, rather than sound administration, in areas they control. The group has not announced a timeline for the formation of its breakaway government.
Sudan’s de facto leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has also promised to form a new and more inclusive administration based in the wartime capital, Port Sudan.
Some critics accused Mr. Ruto of bowing to pressure from the United Arab Emirates, the R.S.F.’s main foreign backer and an increasingly influential force across Africa. In Kenya, Mr. Ruto has assiduously courted the Emirates as funding from China and Western investors has dried up.
A $1.5 billion loan from the Emirates, which Kenya hopes will alleviate its crushing debt, has been under negotiation for over four months. The loan is expected to be finalized later this week, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
The Trump administration has not yet commented on the R.S.F.-led political initiative in Kenya. The State Department did not mention Sudan in a statement that followed a call between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mr. Ruto on Friday.
Mr. Rubio, though, criticized Emirati support for what he termed the R.S.F. “genocide” during his confirmation hearing in January. In recent days, senior Republicans expressed disquiet at the sight of accused war criminals parading through the capital of a major American ally.
Kenya “is helping the RSF legitimize their genocidal rule in #Sudan under the guise of peacemaking,” Senator Jim Risch, Republican of Idaho and the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wrote on social media.
The triumphant scene in the R.S.F. video contrasted with the group’s fortunes on the battlefield, where it has suffered a series of recent defeats. The military has recaptured swaths of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in recent months, and pushed the paramilitaries out of a key breadbasket region in central Sudan.
Still, the R.S.F. retains control over a significant portion Sudan, Africa’s third largest country. Its troops are pressing in hard on the besieged, famine-stricken city of El Fasher, an urban area in the western region Darfur.
The undiminished support of the United Arab Emirates remains a potent source of military strength for the paramilitaries, American officials say. They also appear to have at least tacit support from several of Sudan’s neighbors including Chad, South Sudan, Ethiopia — and now, perhaps, Kenya.

Workday, the maker of human resources and finance software, reported better-than-expected quarterly results on Tuesday. The shares popped more than 7% in extended trading.
Here’s how the company did in comparison with LSEG consensus:
Earnings per share: $1.92 adjusted vs. $1.78 expected
Revenue: $2.21 billion vs. $2.18 billion expected
Revenue increased 15% year over year in the quarter that ended on Jan. 31, according to a statement. Net income fell to $94 million, or 35 cents per share, from $1.19 billion, or $4.52 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.
“The prior year ******* benefited from a $1.1 billion release of the valuation allowance related to U.S. federal and state deferred tax assets,” Workday said.
The company said it’s seeing greater demand for artificial intelligence tools.
“Workday’s unified platform gives customers the ultimate advantage — helping them unlock value faster, reduce total cost of ownership, and harness the power of AI across our best-in-class HR and finance solutions,” CEO Carl Eschenbach said in the statement.
During the quarter, Workday announced the hiring of former UiPath CEO Rob Enslin as its new president and chief commercial officer. Workday also said it would use AI to summarize employee feedback in its Peakon product.
The company called for a 28% adjusted operating margin on $2.05 billion in subscription revenue for the fiscal first quarter. Analysts polled by StreetAccount had expected an adjusted margin of 26.7% and $2.06 billion in revenue.
For the 2026 fiscal year, Workday now sees an adjusted margin of 28%, with $8.8 billion in subscription revenue, implying 14% growth. That’s slightly higher than the forecast that management gave in November.
As of Tuesday’s close, Workday shares were flat year over year, while the S&P 500 index was up 1%.
Executives will discuss the results with analysts on a conference call starting at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Trump Announces Investigation That Could Lead to Tariffs on Foreign Copper
President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday directing his commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, to begin an investigation into whether foreign production of copper and imports of the material into the United States pose risks to America’s economic and national security.
White House officials said that, depending on the results of the investigation, new tariffs could be applied on foreign copper, a material that is widely used in manufacturing and construction but is also key to the U.S. military and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
White House officials were scant on details during a call on Tuesday afternoon, including when the investigation might conclude, what rate tariffs might be set at, or when they would go into effect. It would all be figured out in “Trump time,” one official said repeatedly, which apparently meant quickly.
The potential tariffs would help to protect the domestic copper industry that the White House says has been undermined by unfair trade practices by other countries, and is struggling to compete. Copper is, among other things, an essential component in the building of ships, aircrafts and tanks. The Trump administration framed it on Tuesday as an issue of national defense as much as an economic one, saying the metals would be needed for electric vehicles and A.I., and that geopolitical turmoil could cut the U.S. off from needed supplies.
“Tariffs can help build back our American copper industry, if necessary, and strengthen our national defense,” Mr. Lutnick said. “American industries depend on copper, and it should be made in America, no exemptions, no exceptions.”
“It’s time for copper to come home,” he added.
But, like the tariffs on steel and aluminum that President Trump is promising to reinstate next month, copper tariffs will also raise costs for a variety of other industries that depend on the metal, and could generate a backlash from them. That includes makers of automobiles, electronics and telecommunications equipment, as well as construction companies, which use copper for plumbing, roof construction and other uses.
The tariffs could also spark new fights with foreign countries that ship metal to the United States. The largest foreign source of copper for the United States is Chile, which sends $4.63 billion of the metals to the U.S. each year, followed more distantly by Canada, Peru, Mexico, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. China is also a major global producer of copper, but sends relatively little to the United States because of previously imposed tariffs.
White House officials say that ******** copper production has still driven down global prices, and that China had been snapping up copper resources globally.
Peter Navarro, a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, said in a call with reporters Tuesday that China had “long used industrial overcapacity and dumping as an economic weapon to dominate global markets” and systematically undercut competitors from other countries. “It is now using that same model to gain control of the world’s copper markets,” he said.
Asked how the president landed on the issue of copper specifically, one of the administration officials on the call Tuesday said that “the boss is playing three dimensional chess in this world and he sees things far in advance that the rest of us don’t.” The official referenced an interview from the 1980s in which Mr. Trump talked about trade with Oprah Winfrey, which, the official explained, “presaged a lot of the ways he would think about how foreign governments were cheating us, and how we had to respond with things like tariffs and reciprocal trade.”
Mr. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on a variety of imports, including steel, aluminum, copper, automobiles and pharmaceuticals. He also came within hours earlier this month of imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, saying the countries were not doing enough to stop the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. He paused those tariffs for a month, but said this week they would go into effect Mar. 4 as planned.
Mr. Trump also imposed an additional 10 percent tariff on all products from China, which sparked retaliatory tariffs from the ********. And he has introduced a plan to dramatically reform U.S. tariff rates on other countries, by changing them to reciprocate the tariff levels that other countries charge the United States, as well as capturing certain trade behaviors he deems unfair.
The copper investigation will be carried out under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which allows the president to impose tariffs on foreign products in the interest of national security. By law, the secretary of commerce has 270 days to present findings from the investigation to the president.
Copper prices have climbed this year, ahead of expected tariffs and continued resilience in manufacturing activity, according to a note earlier this month from analysts at Citi. The United States consumed about $17 billion of copper in 2024, and imported about 45 percent of that amount, the analysts said.

What is ChatGPT search?
ChatGPT search is an AI-enhanced search tool built around OpenAI’s popular chatbot. It combines the conversational reasoning of ChatGPT with real-time results drawn from multiple sources on the web. This means you can ask it questions using natural language and get in-depth, contextualized answers with cited online sources.
Previously, ChatGPT was only able to draw on information available up until September 2021. This limitation was lifted in May 2023, when ChatGPT was given unrestricted access to the internet, allowing it to draw on contemporary data.
In October 2024, OpenAI further capitalized on this connectivity, launching ChatGPT search as an addition to its chatbot. This was initially available only to paid subscribers, but is now available to everyone, even if they’re not signed in to an OpenAI account.

What can you use ChatGPT search for?
You can use ChatGPT search for any search query. Unlike a standard search engine, it doesn’t simply return a list of links. Ask ChatGPT search a question and the tool will pull current information from web-based sources to give you a comprehensive answer that’s summarized in the context of your question. Citations give you links to the source websites, while rich content will be pulled in where relevant, such as photos, directions and YouTube videos.
Part of ChatGPT search’s appeal is that it draws upon the conversational smarts of OpenAI’s chatbot. That means you can reply to initial results in a human way, without having to restate your initial query. Say you ask ChatGPT for restaurant recommendations in your local area. You can follow up simply by typing, “what about bars?”
The tool can also be used to generate up-to-date news summaries and product recommendations, with the benefit that it cross-references different sources.
If you’re using ChatGPT search through the mobile app, you can also search for answers using your voice.
What can’t you use ChatGPT search for?
Despite citing sources, ChatGPT search isn’t foolproof. Like any search engine, it can’t vouch for the accuracy of the websites it links to. Summaries generated by the tool can also misinterpret or oversimplify information, which limits its efficacy for highly specialized or technical queries.
The performance of ChatGPT search is also limited to relatively surface-level analysis. It’s not an in-depth research tool. For that, OpenAI has recently introduced Deep Research, which is currently available only to Pro users.
How much does ChatGPT search cost?
ChatGPT search is now available for free, even if you don’t have an OpenAI account.
Taking out a paid ChatGPT subscription can enhance how the search experience integrates with OpenAI’s chatbot.
A ChatGPT Plus plan $20 per month (around £16 / AU$32), for example, offers extended limits on messaging and data analysis.
Pay out for ChatGPT Pro $200 per month (around £160 / AU$320) and you get unlimited access to all reasoning models.
These upgrades don’t directly improve the ChatGPT search tool itself, but do increase the performance of the underlying chatbot.
Where can you use ChatGPT search?
ChatGPT search is integrated into OpenAI’s chatbot, which means you can use it wherever you can access ChatGPT. That includes the web-based platform, as well as the desktop apps for Windows and macOS.
You can also use ChatGPT search on your mobile device with the dedicated smartphone apps for Android and iOS. These feature the option to search with your voice.

Is ChatGPT search any good?
Several members of the TechRadar team have used ChatGPT search extensively and their feedback is pretty conclusive: almost all prefer using the AI-powered tool to classic search engines.
In this comprehensive write-up, we praised how fast, accurate and clean ChatGPT search is in practise. We also appreciated its contextual awareness within the conversational dialogue, noting how the tool is able to continue handle further queries within the same thread. We didn’t come across any glaring inaccuracies, either.
That said, in our comparison of ChatGPT search and Perplexity, we found that OpenAI’s solution didn’t offer the same level of detail or depth in the presentation of information as Perplexity.

Unlike traditional search engines, ChatGPT search doesn’t just return a list of links. Instead, it gives an in-depth written response based on a number of online sources, summarized in the context of your query.

Built into OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT search allows you to find detailed answers from the web through conversational dialogue. That includes the ability to submit follow-up queries within the same thread, written in natural language.
Don’t use ChatGPT search if…
You need infallibly accurate information
While ChatGPT search draws on several web-based sources, it’s results aren’t guaranteed to be factually accurate. Data is only as reliable as the websites it’s taken from, while summaries can sometimes oversimplify nuanced information.
You need to conduct expert research
ChatGPT search isn’t designed to conduct detailed research into niche subjects. Its contextual summaries may lack the depth of interpretation or range of citations required to meet robust research standards.

Eubank and Benn have reignited a family rivalry after their hall-of-fame fathers fought for a second time almost 32 years ago.
Eubank Sr was not in attendance, however, and appears reluctant to be involved in the promotion of the fight.
“The bottom line is that his dad does not even like him,” said Benn.
As the war of words continued, Nigel Benn and Eubank’s team, including promoter Ben Shalom, remained quiet.
But Eubank took particular aim at Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who refused to back down.
“This is not the Eddie Hearn show,” he said, talking over Hearn every time the Matchroom chairman spoke as a standoff ensued.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, announced on Tuesday that the Trump administration will now choose which media outlets can access the presidential pool.
As you all know, for decades, a group of D.C.-based journalists, the White House Correspondents’ Association, has long dictated which journalists get to ask questions of the president of the United States in these most intimate spaces. Not anymore. I am proud to announce that we are going to give the power back to the people who read your papers, who watch your television shows and who listen to your radio stations. Moving forward, the White House press pool will be determined by the White House press team. Legacy outlets who have participated in the press pool for decades will still be allowed to join — fear not. But we will also be offering the privilege to well-deserving outlets who have never been allowed to share in this awesome responsibility. Just like we added a new media seat in this briefing room, legacy media outlets who have been here for years will still participate in the pool, but new voices are going to be welcomed in as well. A select group of D.C.-based journalists should no longer have a monopoly over the privilege of press access at the White House. All journalists, outlets and voices deserve a seat at this highly coveted table. So by deciding which outlets make up the limited press pool on a day-to-day basis, the White House will be restoring power back to the American people who President Trump was elected to serve.

A Southwest Airlines plane and a private jet that entered the runway without authorization experienced a close call at Chicago Midway International Airport on Tuesday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Southwest Flight 2504 landed safely at the Chicago airport after the flight crew had to perform a go-around to prevent a potential incident, according to Southwest.
The FAA is investigating the incident, which took place at around 8:50 a.m. local time.
The close call comes as the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating a string of safety incidents in recent weeks, including the deadly midair collision over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, a Medevac jet ****** in Philadelphia and a deadly regional airline ****** off the coast of Nome, Alaska.
In the Chicago incident, the Southwest plane was arriving from Omaha, Nebraska, and the private jet, a Bombardier Challenger 350, was headed to Knoxville, Tennessee, according to FlightRadar24.
Air traffic control instructed the private jet to turn left on “Runway 4L, cross Runway 31L and hold short of Runway 31C,” according to audio from LiveATC.net.
The pilot replies saying, “Alright, left on 2 – uh – 4L, cross the 22, or 13C, Flexjet 560.”
Then the air traffic controller on the ground immediately replies to the pilot, “Flexjet 560, negative! Cross 31L, hold short Runway 31C.”
Air traffic control audio from the tower also shows the moment the pilot of the Southwest plane chose to perform the go-around to avoid the private jet on the runway.
Air traffic controllers reply, “-west 2504, uh, roger that. Climb, maintain 3,000.”
Once the plane reached 3,000 feet in the air, the pilot asked the tower, “Southwest 2504, uh, how’d that happen?”
“The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident,” a Southwest spokesperson said in an email to CNN. “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.”
Flexjet, the company operating the Bombardier Challenger 350, is “aware of the occurrence” in Chicago and “was working to gather more information on this situation,” a spokesperson said in a statement. The private jet can seat up to 9 passengers, according to configurations posted on Flexjet’s website.
The planes came as close as approximately 2,050 feet before the Southwest plane initiated the go-around, according to FlightRadar24.
The Southwest plane flew over the private jet at an uncorrected pressure altitude of 900 feet, which was approximately 250 feet above ground after adjusting for pressure and elevation, FlightRadar24 said.
A spokesperson for the NTSB said the agency is “aware” of the event and is “gathering information about it.” Between January 2023 and September 2024, the NTSB investigated 13 runway incursions involving commercial, or for-hire, flights.

Supreme Court to hear arguments in “reverse discrimination” case
Washington — The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday in an Ohio woman’s bid to revive a lawsuit alleging “reverse discrimination” after she said she was denied a promotion and demoted because she is straight.
The case centers on what a plaintiff alleging a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act must prove. Marlean Ames, the woman who brought the case, argues that a “background circumstances” requirement adopted by some lower courts unfairly imposes a higher burden on her as a heterosexual woman. The standard requires plaintiffs who are members of a majority group to put forth more evidence to show that their employer discriminated against them.
The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is reviewing the case as President Trump has taken sweeping actions to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs and policies throughout the federal government and fired workers overseeing the initiatives.
In the private sector, large companies like McDonald’s, Ford and Walmart have walked back their DEI initiatives in recent months in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision ending affirmative action in college admissions. That landmark ruling prompted more lawsuits from conservative groups targeting diversity initiatives at corporations.
Conservative legal groups like the America First Legal Foundation are backing Ames in the case and have warned that the background circumstances rule forces courts to decide who is a member of a majority group. America First Legal Foundation was founded by Stephen Miller, who now serves as White House deputy chief of staff.
“The central problem is how to decide who is the ‘majority’ and who is the ‘*********,'” the group, which has sued companies over their diversity policies, wrote in a filing with the Supreme Court. “Surprisingly, courts have given this issue almost no attention, generally assuming that ‘white men’ (and, as below, heterosexuals) are the majority, and everyone else the *********.”
But others such as the NAACP Legal Defense Fund said that Ames is asking the court to “interpret Title VII in a way that ignores the realities of this country’s persisting legacy of discrimination in evaluating disparate treatment claims.”
“Today, just as when Congress enacted Title VII, ****** people and members of other marginalized groups are far more likely to endure employment discrimination than their majority-group counterparts,” the group wrote.
Allegations of reverse discrimination
Ames started working at the Ohio Department of Youth Services, the state’s juvenile corrections system, in 2004 as an executive secretary and became a program administrator in 2014. During her time in that role, she received positive performance reviews, according to court filings.
Ames applied for a promotion to bureau chief of quality assurance and improvement in 2019, but didn’t get the job. Her supervisor, Ginine Trim, who is gay, said Ames and two others who applied failed to lay out their vision for the role, according to court filings from Ames’ legal team.
The position remained unfilled for months and eventually was offered to a gay woman who had been with the department for less time than Ames, her lawyers said in court papers. The woman didn’t interview or apply for the job, and was less qualified than Ames, according to the attorneys.
After Ames was denied the promotion, she was removed from her position as program administrator and told she could either return to her job as executive secretary or be fired. Accepting the demotion, though, would mean a significant pay cut — from $47.22 an hour to $28.40, according to court filings.
Still, Ames chose to go back to her role as executive secretary and was replaced as program administrator by a gay man, her lawyers said.
Ames sued the Department of Youth Services and alleged violations of Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and sex, which includes ******* orientation. Ames argued the department discriminated against her on the basis of ******* orientation.
A federal district court ruled for the Ohio Department of Youth Services, finding that the department offered “legitimate, nondiscriminatory business reasons” for passing Ames over for the promotion. The court also concluded that she failed to satisfy the “background circumstances” requirement.
Imposed by some courts, the standard requires a plaintiff who is a member of a majority group to show “background circumstances” that “support the suspicion that the defendant is that unusual employer who discriminates against the majority,” or engages in reverse discrimination.
Plaintiffs can make that showing by presenting evidence that a member of the relevant ********* group — gay people, in Ames’ case — made the employment decision at issue, or by presenting statistical evidence demonstrating a pattern of discrimination by the employer against members of a majority group.
Ames asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit to review the district court’s decision. The appeals court also found that she failed to satisfy the “background circumstances” requirement and threw out her case.
The three-judge panel first said that the decisions about Ames’ positions were made by the department’s director and assistant director, who are heterosexual. The 6th Circuit also found that Ames’ only evidence of a pattern of discrimination was her own experience.
The Supreme Court agreed in October to take up Ames’ case. In filings with the Supreme Court, her lawyers argued that the “background circumstances” test infringes on the text of Title VII, Supreme Court precedent and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s own practices.
They said the standard effectively adds words to the text of Title VII and imposes a new requirement on certain plaintiffs alleging employment discrimination — those in a majority group. Ames’ lawyers also argued that the background circumstances requirement forces courts to draw lines that intentionally treat some plaintiffs less favorably because of protected characteristics.
“That sort of line drawing does not eradicate discrimination. It perpetuates it,” they wrote.
Additionally, the lawyers noted that Ames would still have to demonstrate before a jury that she was intentionally discriminated against, but was “robbed” of the chance to do so because of the “background circumstances” requirement.
But lawyers for the Ohio Department of Youth Services reiterated in a filing that the officials who made decisions about Ames’ employment are straight and provided a nondiscriminatory reason for replacing her as program administrator: concerns about her vision for the department.
The “background circumstances” requirement, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost wrote, is just another way of determining whether the circumstances surrounding an employment decision suggest that decision was because of a protected characteristic.
The issue, Yost said, is how Ames decided to litigate her case, which he called “fatal” to her discrimination claim.
“At the end of the day, Ames has not identified a single piece of evidence that suggests that ******* orientation played any role in the hiring decision at issue in her promotion claim,” the state argued.
Ohio officials said the background circumstances standard protects against “meritless” Title VII claims, which can “impose ruinous costs, especially on smaller businesses, that ultimately reduce employment, incent automation, and inflate prices for consumers — or consume Ohioans’ tax dollars.”
“Maintaining a robust threshold step, by comparison, ensures that many specious or vexatious Title VII lawsuits die on the desk of busy plaintiffs’ lawyers,” Yost argued.
In a friend-of-the-court brief filed in December, the Biden administration argued the 6th Circuit was wrong to apply a heightened requirement that it said would foreclose some claims that would satisfy Title VII’s standard for liability. The previous administration urged the Supreme Court to toss out the lower court’s decision and send the case back for more proceedings.
The Trump administration has not indicated that the government’s position in the case has changed. A lawyer from the Justice Department will be participating in the argument alongside lawyers for Ames and the Ohio Department of Youth Services.

Tesla’s post-election pop has almost disappeared.
Shares of the electric vehicle maker plunged by more than 8% on Tuesday, pushing the company’s market cap below $1 trillion and to its lowest since Nov. 7, which was two days after President Donald Trump’s election victory.
The stock has plummeted 25% to start the year, while the Nasdaq is down just 1.5%, and has slid more than 35% from its record close on Dec. 16. CEO Elon Musk has lost over $100 billion in net worth over that stretch, though he’s still the world’s richest person, with a fortune valued at about $380 billion.
The latest slide followed a report from Reuters on Monday that Tesla’s long-awaited upgrade to its partially automated driving systems left owners disappointed. Many users told the publication that Tesla’s “navigate on city streets” feature in China fell short of Musk’s promises for self-driving technology.
Other EV makers in China, including BYD, offer their partially automated driving systems for free or a much lower cost. Xiaomi’s popular model SU7 includes the company’s equivalent technology as a standard option for free.
The report out of China added to anxiety amongst Tesla shareholders. Some of the concern has to do with the company’s performance and some is specific to Musk, who is spending much of his time in Washington, DC., leading President Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk, along with his team in Washington, has gained unparalleled access to government computer systems and taxpayer data, and the president has enabled the billionaire to lead mass firings of workers in agencies tasked with oversight of his companies, including Tesla.
Musk’s extremist political rhetoric and activism has led opponents in various markets to organize protests, including at Tesla stores and service centers. Tesla’s stock dropped earlier this month on Trump’s announced plans for extensive tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China, which came alongside a decline in Tesla vehicle registrations across Europe in January and February.
For the fourth quarter, Tesla reported earnings and sales that missed analysts’ estimates, with automotive revenue dropping 8% from a year earlier and operating income plummeting 23%. In the late January report, the company cited reduced average selling prices across its aging lineup of Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles as a major reason for the decline.
According to the California New Car Dealers Association, Tesla sales dropped 11.6% in the fourth quarter of 2024 in the state, which had been Tesla’s biggest market domestically.
Tesla shares are now about 20% above where they were trading prior to Trump’s victory. Most of what remains of the rally is due to the stock’s 15% jump the day after the election. Musk was a major backer of Trump’s presidential effort, contributing $290 million to Republican candidates and causes in 2024, most of that directed at returning Trump to the White House.
Musk and Tesla didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Archer Aviation Inc (NYSE:) stock is down nearly 7% in afternoon trading as the market sell-off enters its third day. One catalyst for the move appears to be Archer’s recent announcement that it had secured $301.8 million in additional funding as the company advances its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) platform, Midnight.
The company has begun building its initial fleet of Midnight air taxis to be used in testing with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Archer announced the capital raise on February 13. At the time, MarketBeat’s Thomas Hughes noted that “the cash injection came at a cost of 35.5 million shares.” This kind of dilution is not uncommon with a pre-revenue company like Archer, but it does limit the upside for market bulls.
However, the slide in ACHR stock accelerated on February 18 on another sell-the-news event. That was the Trump administration’s DOGE committee’s request for cost-cutting at the Department of Defense (DOD). Archer has a $148 million deal in place with the U.S. Air Force “to assess the transformational potential of VTOL technologies for DOD purposes.”
Any selling action on that front, however, would seem shortsighted. Archer and its eVTOL platform seem to be the kind of advanced aircraft platform the United States military is looking to deploy.
Right Move, Wrong Time
Investors who have been involved with Archer Aviation shouldn’t have been surprised by the capital raise. The company is still in the pre-revenue phase and needs capital to build out at scale. And the money the company raised brings the company’s balance sheet to approximately $1 billion.
As part of the company’s plans, it now has the capital outlay (CO) for a production facility in Covington, GA. At scale by 2030, Archer expects the plant to turn out 650 aircraft per year. However, 2030 may look like an eternity for some investors who note that the facility is not complete, and the company still faces regulatory approval. The latter remains likely, as the company is in the last stage of certification, but there are no guarantees.
That said, the move comes at a time when investors are looking for any reason to sell. Despite the sell-off, ACHR stock is up over 89% in the last 12 months easily outpacing other aerospace stocks. And with short interest down 10.6% in the last month, but still at 16.6%, it’s not surprising that the bears have the upper hand in the short term.
Sentiment Remains Bullish
The Archer Aviation analyst forecasts on MarketBeat remain bullish on ACHR stock. In fact, on February 21, Raymond James reiterated its Outperform rating and raised its price target from $11 to $12. That’s above the consensus estimate of $11.33, which is 36.35% higher than the stock’s price during midday trading on February 24.
Without a change in sentiment, which is unlikely, the latest news for Archer is a sell-the-news event that could reverse as quickly as it hit the stock.
Earnings Could Bring More Volatility for ACHR Stock

Archer Aviation reports earnings on February 27. Estimates are for Archer to report earnings of negative 25 cents per share and revenue of 200 million. The net loss would be better than the negative 35 cents per share it reported in the same quarter in 2024. However, it shows that the company continues to be years away from profitability.

Warner Bros Discovery made sweeping cuts to its games division today, closing three studios and ending development on its planned Wonder Woman project. Monolith Productions, Player First Games and WB Games San Diego will be shuttered due to a “disappointing 2024” for WB’s gaming business, according to an internal memo from JB Perrette, the company’s CEO and president of global streaming and games. Bloomberg broke the news of the restructuring.
Monolith Productions made two well-regarded Lord of the Rings games, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. The studio was going to apply its popular Nemesis system from those titles to a Wonder Woman game, which was back in 2021.
WB Player First Games last year. The team was responsible for MultiVersus, a platform fighting game that reached 20 million players in its early days before dwindling to a planned of the online services when its fifth season ends this May.
WB Games San Diego was working on AAA free-to-play gaming. In December, Warner Bros Games also announced that it would lay off employees at as well as pulling back on the studio’s game .

A fight over Georgia’s pro-life law that protects babies from abortion when a detectable heartbeat is heard is heading back to a lower court again after the state’s Supreme Court ruled in its favor for the second time.
As CBN News reported, the Georgia Supreme Court reinstated the pro-life protections in October after a Fulton County Superior Court Judge ruled that the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, signed by Governor Brian Kemp, unconstitutionally prohibited abortions.
In the latest development, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled 6-1 to uphold the law for the second time.
Georgia’s High Court vacated the lower judge’s second attempt to render the six-week abortion ban unconstitutional and ordered that the judge reassess whether the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective and other abortion rights groups who brought the case in court have the standing to do so in the first place, Liberty Counsel, a non-profit legal group, reports.
The Georgia Supreme Court told Judge Robert McBurney to reassess their standing based on a ruling in the Wasserman v. Franklin County case, which eliminated third-party standing in Georgia courts.
The high court pointed out that “a plaintiff may not maintain an action in Georgia courts by asserting only the rights of a third party and meeting the elements of the federal test.”
Now, under this new legal framework, McBurney could dismiss the case.
If he continues to side with the pro-abortion plaintiffs, then it could end up back at the state’s supreme court for a third time.
“Georgia’s ‘heartbeat law’ protects the most vulnerable and there is nothing unconstitutional about that,” said Liberty Counsel’s Founder and Chairman Mat Staver. “There is no right to cruelly kill defenseless children in the womb.”
Liberty Counsel had filed an amicus brief in the case on behalf of the Frederick Douglass Foundation and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. The groups serve members of the African American and Hispanic communities in Georgia and across the United States.
The legal group noted that abortions disproportionately affect minorities under the guise of the modern “reproductive justice” and “family planning” movements.
According to a Pew Research Center study, 42% of African American women have abortions while 22% of Hispanic women have abortions.
Liberty Counsel concluded, “The LIFE Act directly addresses these harms by affirming the equal dignity and value of all human life, rejecting the eugenic ideology embedded in abortion advocacy, and protecting vulnerable populations from targeted eradication. Upholding this law is consistent with Georgia’s constitutional tradition and furthers its compelling interest in safeguarding the rights and lives of its most defenseless citizens—the unborn.”
At least three other states have six-week “heartbeat” laws, including Florida, Iowa, and South Carolina, which all have been upheld by their respective state supreme court.
As CBN News reported, new data released from the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration shows that more than 23,000 babies have been born who would have otherwise been aborted, since the state’s “heartbeat law” went into effect.
In Iowa, abortions dropped by 35% once the state’s heartbeat law took effect.
The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion policy group, estimated that during the six months before the law’s enactment there was an average of about 400 clinician-provided abortions in Iowa per month.
That number dropped to an estimated 260 such abortions in the first full month the law went into effect.
Meanwhile, the South Carolina Supreme Court heard oral arguments earlier this month in a case against the state’s heartbeat bill, for the third time.
In its third legal challenge, Planned Parenthood is arguing that science does not support the claim that a heartbeat can be heard at six weeks of gestation. The abortion giant is pushing to have the abortion limit set at nine weeks of pregnancy.
Attorneys representing the group say a heartbeat is not audible, but as CBN News reported the organization has straddled the fence when it comes to the reality of fetal heartbeats.
Planned Parenthood had previously admitted to the existence of a “beating heart” in the earliest stages of development. But it recently deleted that reference from its website.
Its archived statement had acknowledged that at weeks 5-6 of pregnancy, “A very basic beating heart and circulatory system develop.”
But now, the abortion group is sticking with the claim that fetal heartbeats aren’t real, arguing instead on its website that it just “sounds like a heartbeat.”
“It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it’s not a fully-formed heart,” Planned Parenthood now contends.
South Carolinians aren’t buying it.
In response to the latest lawsuit, GOP lawmakers have signed a letter reaffirming their commitment to oppose Planned Parenthood.
“South Carolina proudly upholds the sanctity of life and the rights of the unborn and their mothers. Our stance is clearly written in our Partyʼs Platform: we believe the right to life is the first inalienable right, without which there can be no other rights,” reads the letter.
“The people of South Carolina have consistently voiced their support for these principles, electing representatives at both the state and federal levels who reflect their values. However, the politically driven abortion industry refuses to acknowledge the will of the people,” it continues.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Alan Wilson also reiterated his position after oral arguments were made in court saying he will always “fight to uphold the sanctity of life.”
“This is the third time my office has gone to the state Supreme Court to fight to uphold our state’s Fetal Heartbeat Act,” he said. “The legislature’s intent was clear—to protect life once a heartbeat is detected. We thank the justices for their attention and thoughtful questions and look forward to their ruling. I will always fight to uphold the sanctity of life.”

Audi admits quality slip, vows to improve – report
A senior Audi executive has admitted the brand’s interior quality isn’t what it once was, but says the carmaker will make improvements in the future.
Audi’s Head of Product and Technology Communication, Oscar da Silva Martins, made the frank admission to Motor1 at the launch of the new Q5, the latest generation of the brand’s most popular model.
“We have certainly been better in terms of quality in the past, but we will get there again,” Mr da Silva Martins said.
The executive reportedly added Audi had underestimated the quality demands of customers and the media, which are understood to be spurring on its revised approach.

Motor1 reports word from vehicle development insiders that increasingly stringent emissions and safety regulations are resulting in carmakers having limited resources to put towards improving vehicle quality.
Last year, US analytics firm J.D. Power released the results of its 2024 Vehicle Dependability report, which looks at how many problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) were reported by owners after three years of ownership.
Audi ranked second-last with 275 PP100 reported. This was well above the average of 190 PP190, and a far cry from industry leader Lexus with 135 PP100.
For context, the core Volkswagen brand ranked only two spots above Audi, while Porsche was the only brand from the ******* family to be below the average PP100.

It’s worth noting J.D. Power’s study goes beyond interior quality, covering 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories: climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats.
The rise of more affordable car brands from China – which pack their vehicles with technology at a lower price point than traditional European carmakers – poses a threat to Audi, being a likely reason why one of its executives is trying to reassure customers it’s working on improving quality.
Earlier this month, Audi’s *** boss, Jose Miguel Aparicio, told Auto Express the brand was looking at launching even more luxurious models in the near future, focusing even more on premium products.
It’s yet to be seen whether this will coincide with the projected increase in vehicle quality flagged by the brand.

Samsung is finally getting into the high performance PCIe 5.0 storage game, two years after the first PCIe 5.0 SSDs arrived. The Korean phone and storage maker unveiled its first “true” PCIe 5.0 SSD, the 9100 Pro, which delivers full PCIe 5.0 speeds. Samsung’s new M.2 NVMe SSD is capable of read speeds of up to 14.8 GB/s. Pricing will start at $199.99, and the drive comes with a 5-year warranty.
The new drive is built on a revised version of Samsung’s TLC V8 V-NAND flash and utilizes the company’s homebrewed “Presto” SSD controller. The main selling point of the drive is its full PCIe 5.0 interface, packing four lanes and sporting the NVMe 2.0 protocol. Samsung’s previous 990 EVO and 990 EVO Plus drives could operate in either PCIe 4.0 x4 mode, or PCIe 5.0 x2 mode, so they’re only half as fast in terms of maximum bandwidth as “true” 5.0 x4 drives.

Samsung offers the 9100 Pro in four configurations: a 1TB variant with 1GB of cache, a 2TB model with 2GB of cache, a 4TB model with 4GB of cache, and an 8TB model with 8GB of cache. The 1TB and 2TB variants are rated at sequential read speeds of up to 14,700 MB/s (14.7 GB/s) and sequential write speeds of 13,300 MB/s, though the 2TB gets a 100MB/s upgrade to 13,400 MB/s. The 4TB and 8TB models are the fastest, sporting sequential read speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s and write speeds of up to 13,400 MB/s.
Random read speeds on the 1TB and 2TB models are rated at 1,850K IOPS and 2,600K IOPS on random write speeds. The 4TB and 8TB models get a boost to 2,200K and 2,600K IOPS on the random read and write speed performance, respectively. Here’s the full specifications rundown.

The 9100 Pro supports several data encryption protocols featuring Class 0 (AES 256), TCG/Opal v2.0, and MS eDrive (IEEE1667). Pricing goes up as the capacity increases, though not linearly. The 1TB model costs $199.99, the 2TB will set you back $299.99, and the 4TB is ‘only’ $549.99. Technically, that means the 4TB drive has the best price per TB, at $137.50 per TB, comparted to $150 per TB on the 2TB and $200 on the 1TB model. The 8TB drive and its associated pricing will be released later in the second half of 2025.
The Samsung 9100 Pro represents the company’s first PCIe 5.0 SSD with speeds well beyond what the Best SSDs using PCIe 4.0 can achieve. Technically, the Samsung 990 EVO was the first PCIe 5.0 SSD the company released, but that drive was not geared toward performance. It featured four PCIe lanes, but used a switch to run just two lanes in PCIe 5.0 mode, limiting its performance to the same level as PCIe 4.0 x4 SSDs.
With speeds of 14.8GB/s, the 9100 Pro barely outperforms the world’s fastest consumer-focused PCIe 5.0 SSD right now, the Crucial T705 (which features up to 14.5 GB/s of performance). You’ll have to wait for our review of the drive, but the sticker box specs, at the very least, suggest the drive will take the spot of the T705 as the fastest consumer SSD in the world. How will it fare in real-world scenarios, though? That remains to be seen.
