  2. Telvin Osborne Once Said He’d Rather Sleep With a Dog Than a ****** Woman—Now He’s Dead, and Social Media Has Thoughts Telvin Osborne Once Said He’d Rather Sleep With a Dog Than a ****** Woman—Now He’s Dead, and Social Media Has Thoughts The fatal shooting of Telvin Osborne has ignited a storm of reactions across social media, not only due to the circumstances of his death but also because of his past comments disparaging ****** women. Many online users have expressed mixed feelings, with some showing no sympathy for Osborne, citing his own words as evidence of deep-seated self-hatred. The Tragic Death of Telvin Osborne Telvin Osborne, a 30-year-old father from Burke County, Georgia, was shot and killed by his 28-year-old girlfriend, Hannah Cobb. Initially, Cobb claimed the shooting was accidental, stating she had been cleaning her firearm after a night out at a club. However, after further investigation and mounting public outrage, authorities charged her with involuntary manslaughter. Sheriff Alfonzo Williams reported that the shooting followed a night of drinking and a heated argument between Osborne and Cobb. While details of their altercation remain under investigation, social media users have focused on a different aspect of the case—Osborne’s documented disdain for ****** women and his apparent preference for white women. Controversial Comments Resurface Following news of Osborne’s death, past statements attributed to him began circulating online, sparking heated debates. A resurfaced quote, allegedly from Osborne, stated: “I’ll f a dog before I f* a ****** b**h. It gotta be a white dog tho.” Telvin Osborne Facebook This statement, along with other remarks praising white women while denigrating ****** women, has fueled a polarizing response to his death. Some social media users expressed sadness over his tragic fate, while others pointed out what they saw as the irony of his demise at the hands of the very demographic he exalted. Social Media Reactions The online response has been overwhelmingly critical, with many users condemning Osborne’s words and suggesting that his fate was the result of internalized racism. One Twitter user expressed disappointment, revealing a personal connection to Osborne: “This one hurts because this is my man’s family but I still gotta tell the truth. Ole boy Telvin was on some ***** st with his praise of the white womens. This is just like that ********* dude that got poked up by his white ‘blessing’ then we found all the ‘akatas’. Damn, Telbo…” Another user explicitly called for ****** women to withhold sympathy, pointing to his past remarks: “****** women, remember to drink water and mind your business when it comes to sympathy for Telvin Osborne being killed by his white girlfriend, Hannah Cobb. He hated you and left the proof. Good riddance to both of them.” A different perspective highlighted the broader issue of self-hatred disguised as preference: “I don’t care about anyone having preferences (I have one), but there’s something wrong with most ****** men who have a preference, as they almost always invariably say things like this. And look what happened to him. #TelvinOsborne. And she’s not even a pretty white woman at that.” Another user criticized the underlying psychology of such views: “A lot of men are like Telvin Osborne. They say dating white women is their ‘preference’ when in reality, it’s just their hatred for ****** women. But let someone speak about their ****** mother that way. You can date white women without having to disparage ****** women.” The ******* Conversation: Self-Hatred and Racial Preferences Osborne’s case has reopened discussions about internalized racism and the ways in which some individuals distance themselves from their own racial identity. Many have pointed out that there is a stark difference between having a dating preference and actively degrading one’s own race. In the ****** community, particularly among men, there is an ongoing debate about whether certain preferences are rooted in genuine attraction or in social conditioning that equates whiteness with desirability. Osborne’s statements exemplify an extreme case of this issue, leading some to argue that his tragic end was a direct consequence of the mindset he promoted. Justice for Telvin Osborne? While Cobb has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, many are questioning whether justice will truly be served. Some argue that her actions were intentional and should be met with harsher legal consequences. Others believe that Osborne’s past rhetoric has tainted public perception of the case, making it unlikely that his death will receive the same level of outrage as other domestic violence incidents. As the investigation continues, one thing is certain—Osborne’s case has sparked a broader discussion about race, self-worth, and the consequences of the ideologies we choose to uphold. Whether one mourns his passing or views it as a cautionary tale, the conversation surrounding his life and death is far from over. 4. ******** foodies pose as mourners to try ******** home’s noodles ******** foodies pose as mourners to try ******** home’s noodles Foodies in China have been reportedly flocking to an unlikely destination – a ******** home – after its noodles went viral on social media. The dish is catered to customers of the Erlong ******** Home in the southwestern province of Guizhou. But as word began to spread about its noodles, the ******** home began attracting hordes of diners with some posing as mourners to try the food. Erlong has since announced it will allow some members of the public to eat at its premises, as long as they do not disturb genuine mourners. The ******** home offers various types of noodle dishes during breakfast and supper hours, which cost 10 yuan per bowl ($1.38; £1.09). The most popular type is reportedly the noodles topped with minced pork and peanuts. One Erlong worker told Jiupai News that they “only served customers who come to the ******** home to handle matters”. But other people have been sneaking in to get a bowl of noodles, the worker said, adding that sometimes queues at Erlong are so long that diners sometimes have to wait a couple of hours to get their food. “There have been people pretending to be relatives of the deceased, it’s hard to tell them apart when it gets crowded, and it’s hard to manage,” he said. To meet the demand, the ******** home has since decided to offer 50 bowls of noodles to members of the public every day – for free – as long as “they do not affect people’s mourning”, according to Erlong’s chef in an interview with local media. The craze for the noodles appeared to have begun earlier this month when a social media user posted about the dish while visiting a friend in Guizhou, which is known for its spicy and sour dishes. “My friend says the food at this ******** home is so good,” they wrote earlier this month on Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote. “The ****** for food is longer than the ****** to lay flowers for the deceased.” “I didn’t get to eat the noodles, because my friend’s mum didn’t know anyone who was holding a ******** service.” Since then, many ******** social media users have also shared their experiences eating the noodles. On Douyin, the ******** version of TikTok, one user shared a photo of the dining hall’s tickets, with what appeared to be a crowd queuing up for food. “I heard the noodles here were very good,” they wrote. “I thought about how short life was, and got another bowl.” Source link #******** #foodies #pose #mourners #******** #homes #noodles Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. NSW Premier Chris Minns says he will consider a Sydney memorial to AC/DC NSW Premier Chris Minns says he will consider a Sydney memorial to AC/DC A NSW MP has hit out at Sydney’s cultural “elites” for allegedly stopping the city from properly recognising legendary Aussie rockers AC/DC. “It’s completely f**ked,” Legalise Cannabis Party MP Jeremy Buckingham told NewsWire on Wednesday. “What it is, it’s cultural cringe. Sydney elites don’t want to recognise one of the greatest exports this country has ever produced. Working class rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s snobs turning up their noses up at bogans. They can go take a running jump.” Malcolm and Angus Young formed AC/DC in Sydney in 1973, with the pair growing up in the inner-western suburb of Burwood. But there is presently only a small mural in Burwood saluting the band’s achievements, despite 50 years of massive popularity. Mr Buckingham wants a public memorial in the city to salute “Australia’s most successful artistic act ever”. “I think it’s time the government recognise the monumental achievement of the Young family in building Australia’s most successful artistic act ever,” he said. “Where the legions of fans who love AC/DC can come and celebrate one of the greatest rock and roll acts in history.” At a budget estimates hearing on Wednesday, Mr Buckingham pressed Premier Chris Minns directly on the matter. Camera IconJeremy Buckingham has blasted what he sees as Sydney’s cultural snobbery for preventing a public memorial to AC/DC. NewsWire / Dylan Coker Credit: News Corp Australia “Their music is still played in stadia, in cars and houses all over the world every day,” Mr Buckingham said. “Is in part of the cultural cringe and snobbery in this state, that we recognise other artists, but we don’t recognise AC/DC because they are seen as bogans and working class?” “I love AC/DC,” Mr Minns said in reply. “I don’t see why I am being fitted up as anti-AC/DC. (I) come into here to answer questions and all of a sudden …” Legalise Cannabis Member Jeremy Buckingham proposes a Sydney AC/DC Memorial at a budget estimates hearing on February 26, 2025. Video: State of New South Wales Through the Parliament of NSW Mr Buckingham asked if the government would rectify “this egregious situation” by “committing to a significant public memorial and event to recognise AC/DC’s globally significant contribution to the arts, the life of our city and state, our nation, and humanity generally?” Mr Minns, appearing taken aback, said he would look into the proposal. “I know the Youngs. I love AC/DC. Perhaps I can take it on notice. But it sounds like a good idea,” he said. Speaking after the hearing, Mr Buckingham told NewsWire the Premier’s response was a “good first step” but “time was of the essence” and a memorial needed to be built quickly. Camera IconMr Minns said a memorial to AC/DC sounded like a ‘good idea’. NewsWire / Monique Harmer Credit: News Corp Australia “I don’t want a soft pedal on this,” he said. “We can build memorials. Outside parliament, there’s a gigantic statue to an 18th century Scottish poet that no one has ever heard of. Yet (band members) Angus, Malcolm, Bon, all those band members, they get zero, nothing.” Mr Buckingham said he would write to the Premier again and raise the matter when parliament returned. AC/DC has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide and boasts classic hits such as Thunderstruck and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. A Sydney developer bulldozed over the Youngs’ Burwood childhood home late last year, even though the home was heritage listed. The demolition sparked community outrage, with the developer blaming the home’s previous owner for the oversight. “We regret that the previous long-term owner did not share this vital part of the property’s background with us,” Burwood Square Pty Ltd general manager Leon Kmita said. “Learning about this connection after our plans were already underway has shocked us. “We are genuinely sorry for this oversight.” Source link #NSW #Premier #Chris #Minns #Sydney #memorial #ACDC Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

She met someone else, all the messages were lies. We had a big fight, and I hurt her… I’m sorry.” Rebecca’s Marodi’s ******* came nearly 25 years after Yolanda was convicted of stabbing her previous spouse, James Joseph Olejniczak, to death in San Bernardino County in 2000. She served more than 13 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter before her release in 2013, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. 8. Woolworths concedes first-half performance was ‘below expectations’ Woolworths concedes first-half performance was ‘below expectations’ Woolworths has conceded its first-half performance was below expectations as it copped a $240 million hit in missed food sales following strike action last year. Chief executive Amanda Bardwell also flagged job losses as part of a $400m cost-saving program to simplify the business, but did not say how many roles will be cut. Woolworths revealed the impact of the 17-day strike action by its warehouse workers — which left shelves bare across Victoria, the ACT and NSW — had ballooned to $240m, up from the initial estimate of $140m provided at the end of last year. Earnings at its *********** grocery business declined 12.8 per cent to $1.39 billion, which included a $95m hit as a result of the industrial action in November and December. Excluding the strike, supermarket sales would have increased by 3.7 per cent, instead of the actual 2.7 per growth recorded, while earnings would have declined by 5 per cent due to promotional investment and ongoing inflation in wages and other costs. “We’re already in a pattern of behaviour from customers where we’re seeing increasing cross-shopping,” Ms Bardwell told analysts. “Unfortunately, as we had the industrial action under way in December, it did mean that in many of our stores, customers did need to go to competitors to be able to get products that they may have wanted or to be able to complete a full shop. “We’re competing for every customer and so we want to see those customers return fully to Woolworths.” Ms Bardwell said sales in Victoria have not yet fully recovered but availability and customer metrics were returning to pre-disruption levels. Group sales hit $35.9b, up 3.7 per cent on the previous year, with pre-tax earnings down 14.2 per cent to $1.45b. Net profit declined 20.6 per cent to $739m in the 27 weeks to January 5, but improved from the $781m loss reported a year ago. “It’s a very disappointing result and it’s not a result that any of us would want to be delivering,” Ms Bardwell said. When asked what she was doing to improve Woolworths’ underlying performance, Ms Bardwell said she would simplify its product range and improve availability. The weak performance, which Woolworths chair Scott Perkins conceded was below its expectations, sent shares down 3 per cent to $30.60. “We are focused on addressing these challenges and under our new CEO, Amanda Bardwell, we have a clear set of priorities for 2025,” he said. “The fundamentals of our business remain strong and we are committed to meet our customers’ needs and create value for shareholders.” As part of its cost-cutting program, Woolworths also plans to reduce its product range but Ms Bardwell did not divulge specific details about which lines would be discontinued. “What we’re talking about here is really a very targeted reduction in some areas where we’ve just seen that customers are not needing and not responding to the number of different (products) that we have in some particular categories,” she told media. “To be clear, there is no set target on this at all.” Woolworths said consumer satisfaction was trending positively in the half before it was accused by the competition watchdog of tricking customers with fake discounts on hundreds of products. Rival Coles was also accused. Ms Bardwell said while the grocer was “absolutely pleased” to see interest rates decrease for customers, and expected shoppers to continue seeking lowest possible prices. “Value-seeking behaviour from customers looks like shopping more of our specials . . . looking for our own-brand products, and opening price points and continuing to compare prices, and therefore increasing numbers of customers choosing to cross shop across our competitors,” she said. Earnings at its discount department chain Big W tumbled 46 per cent. Woolworths has cut its interim dividend by 17 per cent to 39¢ per share, reflecting the lower earnings. 9. Former Metro Devs Working On ‘La Quimera’, a Sci-Fi Shooter That Looks Like Killzone, Leaks Suggest Former Metro Devs Working On ‘La Quimera’, a Sci-Fi Shooter That Looks Like Killzone, Leaks Suggest A series of articles that were seemingly posted too early have revealed a new studio founded by former Metro developers from 4A Games. The studio, dubbed ‘Reburn’, is developing a futuristic sci-fi shooter that looks as though it could be straight out of the Killzone series. It’s named ‘La Quimera’, and an announcement trailer for the game was almost grabbed by eagle-eyed users. Instead, we have a series of screencaps to go on. These images showcase an attractive, intense first-person shooter, the origins of which are hard to pinpoint. One screenshot shows the player character fighting with soldiers who have bright orange eyes on their helmets, which utterly smacks of Killzone, the long-abandoned PlayStation FPS series. From Out of Nowhere La Quimera translates directly from Spanish to English as ‘The Chimera’. That’s a mythological monster created by combining elements from multiple creatures, which immediately gives La Quimera a kind of ‘experiment gone wrong’ vibe. The game’s story has reportedly been penned by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon ******). One Spanish-speaking publication revealed several details about the game. First, it’s set ‘in a Latin American megalopolis’, The screenshots that were captured and shared on ResetEra showcase a futuristic first-person shooter that could be Killzone 4 if you weren’t privy to this news. In the post on ResetEra, users shared several screenshots that reveal what looks like a remarkable game at first blush. From hulking, animalistic robot enemies to dramatic showdowns between what looks like a resistance group and heavily armoured soldiers, a lot of lore is already being established for La Quimera. In some scenes, we get a look at a world that appears to be somewhat devastated and overgrown, suggesting some post-apocalyptic vibes might be present. That theme fits perfectly into the wheelhouse of these developers, given that they worked on Metro. There’s also a title splash that reveals the player character, an armoured individual reminiscent of a Halo Spartan or ‘Prophet’ from the Crysis series. This title splash suggests the game is only coming to PC platforms. Imminent Reveal It has been claimed that La Quimera is an ‘ambitious’ game that fuses ‘exoticism and Latin folklore’ with ‘weapons and technology of the future’. The ‘Metro touch’ is front and centre from the 110 developers working on the project, many of whom have acquired experience from years of working at 4A Games. It has been mentioned that it’s set to be a narrative-driven adventure playable either solo or in a group of up to four players. It’s not yet known when Reburn plans to fully reveal La Quimera, but given that at least three outlets have their hands on a trailer and screenshots, it could be any day now. Studios and publishers will rarely share content like this too long before an announcement is made, for this very reason that we’re discussing. Remember – it’s not confirmed until it’s confirmed, and this content is all subject to change. What do you think about La Quimera? Let us know in the comments or on the Insider Gaming forum. Luka Doncic triple-double and LeBron James’ monster fourth quarter leads Lakers to win over Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic triple-double and LeBron James’ monster fourth quarter leads Lakers to win over Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic had 19 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists in his first game against the Dallas Mavericks since they traded him to the Lakers, leading Los Angeles to a 107-99 victory. Doncic secured his first triple-double with the Lakers on an emotional night for the Slovenian superstar, who was blindsided by the seismic trade sending him to Los Angeles for Anthony Davis three weeks ago. Doncic warmly greeted his former teammates on Tuesday night (Wednesday AEDT), but also took a few portentous looks at the Mavs’ bench during the match. He struggled with his shot, going 6-of-17, but capped a superb playmaking performance with an assist to LeBron James for a clinching lay-up with 32 seconds left. Norway’s melting glaciers are revealing objects from the Stone Age, the Iron Age, and the medieval era. Some ancient artifacts are mysteries, but they still indicate trade routes through the mountains. Here’s what Norway’s glacial archaeologists found in the meltiest part of this past summer. Mysterious and fascinating artifacts are surfacing on melting glaciers across the planet. From strange wooden tools and statues to ancient human remains, these objects are drawing archaeologists into the high, frozen mountains each year. Norway is at the forefront of this emerging field of research, called glacial archaeology. With about 4,500 artifacts discovered, the country claims more than half of the planet’s glacial archaeology findings, according to Espen Finstad, who co-leads the Norwegian program, called Secrets of the Ice. Archaeologists there are piecing together clues about ancient industries and trade routes across the glaciers. They just had one of their best field seasons yet. Here’s what they found. People have trekked over Norway’s glaciers for thousands of years to sell and buy goods. Espen Finstad leading a team of archaeologists on a three-hour hike to a dig site.Andreas Christoffer Nilsson, secretsoftheice.com Ancient hunting, travel, and trade routes crossed the mountains between the Norwegian coast and inland areas from the Stone Age. “We are lucky that some of these trade routes have gone over ice,” Finstad told Business Insider. Objects that ancient travelers left behind were frozen in the ice for centuries — until recent decades. A 1700-year-old horse snowshoe was found on the ice at Lendbreen.Glacier Archaeology Program As humans have burned fossil fuels for energy, releasing heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, global temperatures have been rising for decades. Glaciers everywhere are melting, releasing the ancient artifacts preserved inside them. Some of these objects look familiar, such as this mitten. Lendbreen was a common travel route during the Viking and medieval eras. The archaeologists go there almost every year. In the summer of 2024, heavy melting meant lots of new discoveries. The Lendbreen ice patch as it looked when the team arrived in September.Espen Finstad, secretsoftheice.com “The melting really came rapidly at the end of the season,” Finstad said. Finstad’s team of about seven archaeologists visited nearly a dozen sites across the mountains to search for artifacts. Their findings included “two of the best-preserved arrows we ever found,” Finstad said. Usually there’s a little excavation involved, but the archaeologists simply picked this arrow up. “It’s very seldom to find them that well preserved on the ice. So it was kind of a gift. It was very beautiful,” Finstad said. Arrows are abundant in the glaciers because reindeer hunting was “almost like an industry” in the Iron Age and medieval era, Finstad said. Reindeer move to the ice and snow in summer to avoid botflies. This provided an opportunity for ancient hunters.Glacier Archaeology Program, Innlandet County Council People hunted for their own food, of course, but also to sell in a market. Arrows can hold clues about past societies. 18. The skills workers will need in the future as AI enters workplace The skills workers will need in the future as AI enters workplace Artificial intelligence is a turning point forcing us to rethink not just what work is, but what it means to be human at work, according to a LinkedIn specialist. Drazen_ | E+ | Getty Images Artificial intelligence is disrupting global industries and workforces, but it may also set in motion an entirely new economy. Although the idea of AI dates to the mid-1900s, the technology catapulted into common discourse after the launch of OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in November 2022. “But [generative AI] isn’t just another invention,” said Aneesh Raman, chief economic opportunity officer at LinkedIn. “It’s a turning point, forcing us to rethink not just what work is, but what it means to be human at work.” ‘The knowledge economy is on the way out’ Similar to the Industrial Revolution, AI is pushing us into a new era, said Raman. “For centuries, work was about our physical abilities on farms, and then again in the factories,” said Raman. “It’s only been the past couple decades that work has been about our intellectual abilities.” The knowledge economy is on the way out, and a new economy is on the way. Aneesh Raman Chief economic opportunity officer, LinkedIn Now the rise of AI is sparking a new discussion: If automation takes over more physical tasks and artificial intelligence takes over more intellectual ones, humans will be defined by their social abilities, said Raman. “The knowledge economy is on the way out, and a new economy is on the way for us humans at work,” he said. “I’m calling it the innovation economy.” In this new era, “human innovation and our uniquely human skills, like social and emotional intelligence” will be key, he added. Skills such as creativity, curiosity, courage, compassion and communication — or “the 5 C’s” — are what underpin innovation, allowing us to come up with new ideas that challenge the status quo, collaborate, and ultimately build together, he said. AI unlocks innovation AI also stands to democratize innovation in a way we’ve never seen before, said Raman. “The systems of work have traditionally privileged pedigree over potential — very few humans across history have had the right credentials and the right connections to get access to the capital they needed to turn ideas into inventions,” he said. A research paper by economist Raj Chetty along with other researchers, coined the term “lost Einsteins” to describe potential innovators who are limited by their socio-economic status. The paper, which compared tax and school district records of more than one million patent holders in the U.S., found that children with parents in the top 1% of the income distribution were ten times more likely to become inventors than children of parents with below median income. “Where [AI] is set to have the biggest impact is in helping people sitting on great ideas and great inventions finally bring those ideas to life,” said Raman. The technology can not only help automate routine tasks, but it can also be “your sounding board, your co-founder, your coder” and more, he said. “Think about what happens when an entrepreneur in Brazil can prototype a climate technology solution without needing a full engineering team. Or when a teacher in rural India can build and deploy an educational platform without needing to write code,” he added. ‘Disrupt yourself or be disrupted’ Beyond innovation, AI is also changing the job market as we know it. “Jobs are changing so fast that pedigree signals we’ve long relied on, like where you went to school or what big-name company you’ve worked for in the past, are no longer useful predictors of future success,” he added. Instead, skills are more important than ever in this new era of work. Technical abilities and knowledge have long been categorized as “hard skills” while social and emotional abilities have been designated “soft skills.” Now as AI is able to replicate many of the intellectual aspects of work, our human skills are becoming the new “hard skills,” added Raman. Therefore, the winners of this new era of work will be those who lean in and learn to adapt — or put a different way “disrupt yourself or be disrupted,” said Raman. Nearly 90% of C-suite executives say AI adoption is a top priority in 2025, according to LinkedIn research which gathered data from 1,991 executives across nine countries. In Asia-Pacific, that number jumps to 94%. Not only is it important to learn how to use AI tools, but sharpening our human skills are key, as these are skills that AI can never replace, said Raman. 20. What Apple pulling *** Advanced Data Protection means for you What Apple pulling *** Advanced Data Protection means for you Liv McMahon Technology reporter Reuters Apple has made headlines by pulling its most advanced data security tool for *** customers. It is removing Advanced Data Protection (ADP) after the Home Office asked for the right to be able to access data which it is applied to – something even Apple itself cannot currently do. Rather than comply with that request, on Friday the tech giant said it would halt new *** sign-ups to the tool and remove existing user access at a later date. The move has prompted criticism of the *** government’s actions – but also confusion about what protections remain for *** Apple customers. What is Apple’s Advanced Data Protection? ADP is an opt-in data security tool designed to provide users of devices such as iPhones with a more secure way to protect data stored in their iCloud accounts. Items including back-ups, photos, notes and voice memos are given standard encryption by default. The company can be ordered to hand over this data by law enforcement. ADP, meanwhile, applies an extra level of protection through what’s known as end to end encryption, which means Apple cannot see or access the data – only the user can. Because Apple does not have a key, losing access to your account can mean losing your data altogether. It also means law enforcement agencies have no way of accessing such data either. The tool is independent of the protections for blue messages sent with iMessage, passwords stored in iCloud keychain, Health app data and Facetime, which are end to end encrypted by default. Cyber Correspondent Joe Tidy explains how end to end encryption works What does this mean for my iCloud data? If you are in the *** and have not turned on ADP, you will not see a change to the way your data is protected as a result of Apple disabling it. Your iCloud data will remain protected by standard encryption and, as before, can still be accessed by Apple. But it does mean you now cannot apply to protect iCloud storage with end to end encryption, even if you want to. Meanwhile, people in the *** who had ADP enabled prior to Friday’s change will lose access to it a later date. Apple has not said when, nor how many *** users will be affected. Apple *** iPhone users have been met with a notice on the Advanced Data Protection settings page informing them the tool cannot be enabled. Some experts have raised alarm over its removal, saying it will leave users less protected and also have wider, global consequences. Graeme Stewart of cybersecurity firm Check Point said it would not mean “a complete free-for-all” as law enforcement must have a warrant to request iCloud data. But he said other governments may look to replicate the ***’s demand of Apple for a so-called “*********” to encrypted cloud data. Cybersecurity experts have likened the idea of creating a ********* to someone leaving their house keys under their doormat – essentially creating a vulnerability which anyone, including bad actors, can exploit. Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation said that if Apple had complied with the request, it would have created a ********* not just for *** users “but for people around the world, regardless of where they were or what citizenship they had”. Apple told the BBC in a statement that it had “never built a ********* or master key to any of our products, and we never will”. What protections do Google and Android offer? Like Apple, Google says it uses standard encryption across a range of its services to protect data as it moves between users’ devices, its services and data centres. The search giant, which owns Android, has provided further protections for Android phone system back-ups since 2018. It uses a mechanism that generates a random security key on a device, which is encrypted by a user’s lock-screen passcode, pattern or pin. Google says it cannot see this security key and that the passcode-protected information is sent securely to high security chips in its data centres. But the same protections do not extend to Google Photos or content stored in Google Drive – which are not end to end encrypted. It also has an Advanced Protection Program for people who want further security for their account. This relies on using passkeys to verify the account holder. Some Samsung Galaxy smartphones also have “enhanced data protection” which encrypts back-ups of messages, call logs, apps and settings and more end to end. Tulsi Gabbard says more than 100 intelligence officers will be fired for ********* explicit NSA chat messages Tulsi Gabbard says more than 100 intelligence officers will be fired for ********* explicit NSA chat messages Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Tuesday that more than 100 intelligence officers will be fired for participating in ********* explicit messages in National Security Agency chat rooms. “There are over 100 people from across the intelligence community that contributed to and participated in what is really just an egregious violation of trust,” Gabbard said in an interview with Fox News’ Jesse Watters. “I put out a directive today that they will all be terminated and their security clearances will be revoked.” “They were brazen in using an NSA platform intended for professional use to conduct this kind of really, really horrific behavior,” she added. The messages allegedly exchanged in the chatroom were first reported by conservative activist Christopher Rufo, who writes for City Journal. DNI spokesperson Alexa Henning said earlier Tuesday on X that various intelligence agencies have been directed to identify and terminate employees who participated in the ********* explicit conversations by Friday, as well as revoke their security clearances. “The DNI sent a memo directing all intelligence agencies to identify the employees who participated in the NSA’s ‘obscene, pornographic, and ********* explicit’ chatrooms and to terminate their employment and revoke their security clearances,” Henning said. A senior administration official told CNN that members of the rank and file in the intelligence community have been reaching out to Gabbard about the issue. Gabbard’s comments come hours after the NSA said that it was aware of posts that “appear to show inappropriate discussions” by intelligence personnel and announced that investigations were underway. “Potential misuse of these platforms by a small group of individuals does not represent the community. Investigations to address this misuse of government systems are ongoing,” the agency said in a statement on X. CNN’s Jake Tapper contributed to this report. Andrew Forrest and Fortescue’s climate fight makes the cover of Time magazine Andrew Forrest and Fortescue’s climate fight makes the cover of Time magazine WA mining magnate Andrew Forrest now has another feather in his cap after making the cover of Time magazine. Mr Forrest made his billions from Pilbara iron ore, but for the past few years has been trying to turn his $57 billion Fortescue empire into a beacon for green hydrogen energy that will power a global shift away from fossil fuels. But the road to cleaner power has been paved in potholes. Shareholders have grown uneasy — and impatient — with the enormous sums of money so far laid out to achieve ambitious production targets that have been pushed back multiple times and progress on a string of massive proposed green hydrogen hubs around the globe. Despite the setbacks and a flurry of high profile exits of key Fortescue executives — that once prompted Mr Forrest to warn that staff needed to “get on the bus or get off the bus” in regards to his green energy ambitions — the man better known as Twiggy remains resolute, telling Time in the 3081-word cover story published online overnight Wednesday that: “It’s about character. It’s about leadership.” Mr Forrest told author Justin Worland that it was time for businesses to stop talking about long-term targets and dump the use of fossil fuels in the next few years — not decades. Camera IconThe Time magazine cover featuring Andrew Forrest. Credit: Time “If you think you can’t go green, then you’re right,” he said. “It’s time for you to get off the stage and learn from someone with more talent, more conviction, or initiative than you who can lead your company.” Last September, Fortescue signed a $US2.8 billion ($4.4b) deal with Liebherr to develop a 475-strong fleet of zero emission machines for its vast network of Pilbara mines. Presenting Fortescue’s half-year results last week, green energy chief Mark Hutchinson assured investors again that the group was still “fully committed” to green energy and hydrogen ambitions, but that rocky government policy had created “uncertainty”. The company also announced that it was reining in its green energy budget for the financial year from $US500m ($787.3m) to $US400m. And timelines for a $US550m liquid green hydrogen project in the US and a $150m electrolyser factory in Queensland are now both being “reconsidered” with an update on the projects due by July. According to the Time article, Mr Forrest knows the stakes are high. “The dangerous part about what we’re doing is that if we’re not successful, the inspiration for thousands of other companies won’t be there,” he told the magazine. “And if we lose money on this in the long term, people say, well, that’s philanthropy.” Source link #Andrew #Forrest #Fortescues #climate #fight #cover #Time #magazine Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  25. World’s largest religious gathering wraps up after 600 million devotees take holy dip World’s largest religious gathering wraps up after 600 million devotees take holy dip Hundreds of millions of Hindu devotees have bathed in sacred waters, despite concerns over overcrowding and water pollution, as the world’s largest religious gathering wrapped up Wednesday in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Over the last 45 days, more than 620 million people – nearly a third of India’s roughly 1.4 billion population – have attended the Maha Kumbh Mela, or the festival of the Sacred Pitcher, on the riverbanks in the city of Prayagraj, in a spectacle of color and expression of faith. Followers have come to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three holy rivers – the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati – to purify their sins and take another step closer to “spiritual liberation.” Every 12 years the festival carries the prefix “Maha,” which means great, as it’s the largest gathering of the Kumbh Mela that’s held every three years in one of four cities. “It is a unique, once in a lifetime experience,” said Sushovan Sircar, 36, who works as an independent consultant in Delhi. “People from all over India are here, as I saw number plates of cars from almost every state.” Police assist a man at the site of a deadly crowd crush, where pilgrims were killed in a rush to take a holy dip in Prayagraj, on Wednesday, January 29. – Arun Sankar/AFP/Getty Images Pilgrims gather to take a holy dip during the festival in Prayagraj on Wednesday, January 29. – Niharika Kulkarni/AFP/Getty Images Pilgrims offer prayers while standing in the waters of the Triveni Sangam during the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in Prayagraj on Tuesday, February 4. – R.Satish Babu/AFP/Getty Images Though this year’s festivities have been marred by two separate, deadly crowd crushes, millions have turned out for the festival despite concerns of overcrowding and reports of “unsafe” levels of contamination in key bathing sites. A report from the Central Pollution and Control Board (CPCB), part of India’s Environment Ministry, last month found high levels of coliform faecal bacteria in the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, despite the government touting sustainable initiatives and sanitation efforts. Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath denied the accuracy of the government report, insisting that the water was not just safe for bathing, but also for the Hindu ritual of drinking a handful after bathing. Attendees often submerge themselves fully, sometimes drinking or collecting the sacred water in containers. ‘My sins are cleansed, but not my body’ Sircar, the independent consultant from Delhi, said he bathed in the water at Sangam point – the confluence of the three rivers considered to be the most auspicious place to bathe and where most people take their dip – twice last week. “There is a concern because there is nothing I can do about the contamination in the water. In your mind you tell yourself, this part looks clean, spend a few minutes in, recite prayers and come out,” said Sircar. “I took a shower for sins and then another shower for the contamination,” he laughed. “So you need a bath after the bath… My sins are cleansed, but not (my) body.” A Hindu devotee performs rituals after taking a holy dip on Thursday, January 30. – Deepak Sharma/AP Before the festival began, India’s top environmental court directed the state and federal pollution boards to ensure the river water was clean enough to drink and bathe in. It called for increasing monitoring and sample collecting of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers and ensuring that no untreated sewage or solid waste would be discharged. But a report submitted by the federal pollution board on February 3 stated that faecal coliform levels, a key indicator of untreated sewage and faecal matter in water, were far above the safe limit set by the board of 2,500 units per 100 millilitres. At various parts of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers around Prayagraj levels were more than 1,000 over the safe limit, according to the report. Adityanath said his government was continually monitoring the water levels to ensure its quality. Kumbh Mela organizers also told CNN that an “exhaustive survey” of all 81 drains that release water in the rivers was carried out ahead of the festival. “We have ensured that the water quality has been maintained,” said Kumbh Mela officer Vivek Chaturvedi. Aishwary Sharma, 31, a finance professional in Delhi, said he took a dip in the rivers despite knowing it could be polluted. “I think it is quite evident that the Ganga and Yamuna are not clean rivers,” he said. “(But) there are many things that are bad for you… The air we breathe is so toxic for our health… It is just another thing that is polluted that could have a harmful impact on my health.” For others, their faith and participating in the sacred festival was more important than their concerns. “What (most people) are interested in is their devotion and religion and that they want to take that holy dip,” said Sunny Parasher, 34, from Panchkula in Haryana state. “Where there is devotion, where there is religion, there is no question,” he said. Kalpana Mishra, 55, a housewife from Prayagraj, said she would not take another holy dip after reading the pollution board’s report. “What does being a literate person mean if you hear all this and still decide to go?” she asked. Exposure to faecal contamination can cause water borne diseases such as typhoid, diarrhoea, cholera, gastroenteritis, E-coli, skin disease and vomiting, health experts warn. Push to clean the rivers A worker collects waste using a trash skimmer machine across the Triveni Sangam, as pilgrims gather to take a holy dip in Prayagraj on Tuesday, February 25. – Punit Paranjpe/AFP/Getty Images Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made cleaning the Ganges, India’s holiest river, a priority since first taking office in 2014 – with billions of dollars spent or pledged on sewage treatment, cleaning surface waste and afforestation in the decade since. The Ganges, a lifeline for 400 million people who live and work along it, runs through 50 Indian cities that pump out about 3 billion liters of sewage every day – only a fraction of which is treated before it reaches the river, according to the World Bank. The Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges, has also for decades been plagued by the dumping of toxic chemicals and untreated sewage. Ahead of the festival, Indian authorities touted this year’s gathering as a “Green Kumbh,” with sustainable initiatives such as a ban on single-use plastics, eco-friendly toilets, electric rickshaws and an army of 15,000 sanitation workers hired to clean up after major bathing days. The Ministry of Culture said in January that the festival had been “meticulously planned to uphold hygiene and ecological balance” and would “set an example for future large-scale events worldwide” in environmental responsibility. Protecting and cleaning the river was even a major theme at a conference held on the sidelines of the festival with religious and environmental leaders coming together for the first time on how religious institutions can address the climate crisis. “If there is no water in the rivers, there is no Kumbh. We don’t consider it water, we consider it nectar,” said Indian spiritual leader Swami Chidanand Saraswati at the meeting. “If we all do not make efforts to protect it, then the next (Kumbh Mela) will be on mere sand.” Workers carry sacks of waste in Prayagraj on Wednesday, February 12. – Niharika Kulkarni/AFP/Getty Images A worker collects waste using a trash skimmer machine on Wednesday, February 12. – Niharika Kulkarni/AFP/Getty Images But complicating the green efforts was the enormous crowd size at this year’s Kumbh Mela, which saw 250 million more people than originally expected, according to one expert. Authorities had planned for about 400 million people to attend over the six-week gathering, with about 9 million people per day, but about 620 million people attended in total, according to government figures. “It is a mammoth task to take care of such a crowd,” said Dr Nupur Bahadur, an associate director with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a research institute that looks at wastewater management, established by the Indian government. River contamination could be better managed by adopting better on-site prevention and disinfection methods, Bahadur said. One of them could be halting the dip after every 12 hours for one hour” and letting fresh water run through the bathing areas before “the dips can be restarted,” she said. Bahadur said that while the festival’s “massive increase in footfall” strained its infrastructure, it has still been “the best human effort possible” in such a situation. Prayagraj resident Mishra said she will be happy when her city gets back to normal. “My eyes are constantly burning and there is so much dust,” she said. “I want the festival to end so I can get back to my life.” For more CNN news and newsletters create an account at CNN.com Source link #Worlds #largest #religious #gathering #wraps #million #devotees #holy #dip Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
