  2. New cargo ship uses ancient methods for power — here’s how it could revolutionize the industry New cargo ship uses ancient methods for power — here’s how it could revolutionize the industry Long ago, wind was the No. 1 way to power a ship. Now, well over 150 years after that era, it looks like wind power is back in a big way. With it comes hope that we can cut back on pollution and change the course of humankind and our planet. In late January, the world’s largest wind-powered ship launched in Turkey. The Neoliner Origin is 450 feet long and utilizes 3,000 square meters of sails to haul up to 5,300 tons of freight. It also boasts a massive reduction in emissions relative to comparable fuel-powered ships. Neoline President Jean Zanuttini told Agence France-Presse that by utilizing wind power and slightly reducing the ship’s speed, “We can cut fuel consumption and therefore emissions by a factor of five compared with a conventional ship.” While cutting out unnecessary pollution is crucial for protecting the environment, the greater challenge is in reducing emissions from the things that are crucial to us. According to U.N. Trade and Development, “over 80% of the volume of international trade in goods is carried by sea.” That adds up to about 3% of global pollution, a major chunk relative to other industries. Reducing trade could reduce those emissions, but the impact that would have on the world economy and global health could be devastating. With the launch of the Neoliner Origin, there is hope that maritime shipping can continue to thrive while drastically reducing the industry’s impact on the environment. By turning back to an ancient method of seafaring and combining a cutting-edge hybrid diesel-electric engine, this ship is charting a new, planet-friendly way forward. The Neoliner Origin is undergoing a six-month ******* of “fitting out,” which essentially means the completion of construction. By summer, it will begin what could be its first of many trips to North America, kicking off a new, greener era of ocean travel. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? 3. Ukraine reportedly agrees a critical rare minerals deal with the U.S. Ukraine reportedly agrees a critical rare minerals deal with the U.S. FILE PHOTO: Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meet at Trump Tower in New York City, U.S., September 27, 2024. Shannon Stapleton | Reuters Ukraine and the United States reached an agreement over access to Kyiv’s deposits of rare earth minerals, according to media reports, as Kyiv seeks to reinforce its ties with its key wartime transatlantic ally under the Trump administration. The draft deal envisages that the two countries will jointly develop Ukraine’s mineral resources, including oil and gas, and sees the U.S. drop demands for a right to $500 billion in potential revenue from the agreement, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the deal on Tuesday. U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to confirm progress regarding the deal, which has yet to be inked. “I hear that [Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy]’s coming on Friday,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday. “Certainly it’s okay with me, if you’d like to, and he would like to sign it together with me. And I understand that’s a big deal.” Trump said the agreement offered Kyiv billions of dollars in aid and “lots of equipment and military equipment and the right to fight on, and originally, the right to fight.” The text of the deal does not give Ukraine specific security guarantees, according to the Financial Times — a key issue for Kyiv, as it looks to a post-war future in which it’s protected from further Russian aggression. CNBC has reached out to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the U.S. State Department for comment. Neither CNBC nor NBC News have seen a copy of the “framework agreement.” Bloomberg News and Sky News also reported that agreement terms were reached. It’s unclear how much mineral wealth lies within Ukraine, although one Ukrainian official from the economy ministry reportedly said at the weekend that $350 billion worth of natural resources are located in Russian-occupied territories, the Kyiv Independent reported on Sunday. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna reportedly led negotiations between Washington and Kyiv on the mineral deal and told the Financial Times on Tuesday that “we have heard multiple times from the U.S administration that it’s part of a ******* picture.” “Ukraine, I will say they’re very brave, and they’re good soldiers, but without the United States and its money and its military equipment, this war would have been over in a very short time,” Trump added on Tuesday. Security guarantees Yuriy Sak, an advisor to Ukraine’s Ministry of Strategic Industries, told the BBC on Wednesday that the deal is not exactly what the U.S. or Ukraine wanted, but is “good enough for both for the negotiating process to move forward.” “Many things we didn’t like were dropped,” he told the British broadcaster, adding that discussions about security guarantees need to continue. “There’s no point in signing any deal on critical minerals if Russians can reinvade one month after signing the deal,” he said. Ukraine’s leadership has come under sustained pressure to ink a deal with the U.S. since President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. The president initially proposed that Kyiv should grant the U.S. 50% ownership of its rare earth minerals as recompense for military aid it has given Ukraine. Trump has also previously claimed in an interview that a deal would give the U.S. access to $500 billion worth of rare earth minerals and that this would be payback for aid already received by Kyiv. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disputed the amount of wartime aid the U.S. has given Ukraine, putting the figure at around $100 billion. Independent analysis by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy puts the amount of U.S. support committed to Ukraine at 114.2 billion euros, or $119.5 billion. “From Trump I want an understanding what Ukraine can get, as well as security guarantees and contingent after the hot stage of war is ended,” Zelenskyy told the “Ukraine: Year 2025 forum” on Sunday, on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “An agreement should be win-win for American businesses and Ukraine’s people,” he added, in comments translated by NBC News. “I’m not signing something that 10 generations of Ukrainians will be paying off.” FILE PHOTO: Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meet at Trump Tower in New York City, U.S., September 27, 2024. Shannon Stapleton | Reuters “About [the] $500 billion. Let’s deal with the figure first. I know we had $100 billion. That’s a fact. I’m not going to acknowledge $500 billion …The second thing, to be honest, I’m not even ready to fix 100 billion. I’ll explain why. Because we shouldn’t recognize grants as debts,” he said. Zelenskyy had also noted that any assistance Ukraine was still receiving was a legacy of the previous U.S. administration under Joe Biden, adding that “as far I understand, the deal is that there is a condition for a new assistance.” In separate comments last week, Zelenskyy said he could not “sell” his country and that an initial proposal from the U.S. had not offered Ukraine the security guarantees it sought. The Ukrainian leader last week reportedly ordered his ministers not to sign off on any deal, saying the proposal that had been put forward was too focused on U.S. interests and offered Ukraine very little in return. 5. Gaza ceasefire deal impasse resolved by mediators, officials say Gaza ceasefire deal impasse resolved by mediators, officials say Israeli and ****** officials say the latest impasse in the Gaza ceasefire deal has been resolved by mediators. Israel had delayed the release of 600 ************ prisoners on Saturday in protest at what it said was the cruel treatment of Israeli hostages being handed over by ******. ****** said this was a serious violation of the deal. It is now expected that the prisoners will be freed as well as another batch, possibly later on Wednesday or Thursday, in exchange for the return of the bodies of four hostages. That would clear the way for US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to visit the region. He has said he wants Israel and ****** to begin delayed talks on the second stage of the ceasefire. News of the breakthrough came as thousands of Israelis gathered in the central city of Rishon LeZion to watch the ******** procession of hostages Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, whose bodies were returned by ****** last week. They were killed in captivity after being kidnapped during ******’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which triggered the war in Gaza. ****** said in a statement on Tuesday night that a delegation led by the group’s Gaza leader, Khalil al-Hayya, had concluded a trip to Cairo after reaching an agreement to resolve the problem over the delayed release of the ************ prisoners. “They will be released simultaneously with the bodies of the Israeli [hostages] agreed to be handed over during the first phase, in addition to the corresponding ************ women and children,” it added. Hayya also reiterated ******’s commitment to the ceasefire deal “with all its stages and clauses”. There was no immediate confirmation from the Israeli government. But Israeli sources told the Haaretz newspaper that the bodies of the four hostages were likely to be handed over by ****** on Wednesday evening at the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Gaza. The source added that the families of the four hostages had been notified. They were not identified, but are believed to be Shlomo Mansour, 86, Ohad Yahalomi, 50, Tsachi Idan, 50, and Itzik Elgarat, 69. Egyptian officials said ****** had agreed to hand over the bodies on Thursday without any ceremonies inside Gaza. ****** – which is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US, *** and other countries – had warned earlier this week that it would not take part in indirect talks about further steps in the ceasefire unless the prisoners were released. The 620 ************ prisoners – including more than 400 Gazans detained by Israeli forces during the war and 50 prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails – were supposed to have been released in return for six living and four dead hostages handed over by ****** last week. A total of 33 Israeli hostages are supposed to be exchanged for about 1,900 ************ prisoners and detainees from Gaza during the ceasefire deal’s first phase, which is due to end on Saturday. So far, 25 living hostages and four dead hostages have been released. Both Israel and ****** have said the last four hostages are dead. Five living Thai hostages have also been freed outside the deal. The agreement has also seen Israeli forces withdraw from densely populated areas of Gaza. Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have been allowed to return to their homes in the north and hundreds of aid lorries are now being allowed into the territory each day. The ceasefire’s second phase should see the 57 remaining hostages released, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire. The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy ****** in response to the 7 October attack, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. At least 48,348 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s ******-run health ministry. Most of Gaza’s population of 2.1 million has also been displaced multiple times, almost 70% of buildings are estimated to be damaged or destroyed, the healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene systems have collapsed, and there are shortages of food, fuel, medicine and shelter. 6. Kohli can beat Tendulkar’s ODI record: Ricky Ponting Kohli can beat Tendulkar’s ODI record: Ricky Ponting Virat Kohli is more than 4,000 runs adrift of Sachin Tendulkar in the list of leading one-day international scorers but former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes the 36-year-old can still surpass the Indian maestro if he remains hungry. Kohli went past 14,000 runs in the format with an unbeaten 100 in India’s victory over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy on Sunday and only has Tendulkar (18,426) and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) ahead of him. Ponting, who is fourth in the list with 13,704 runs, backed the Indian batsman to keep adding to his tally of 14,085. “With someone like Virat, you never write him off, because I’m sure he would be motivated by that (achieving the record),” Ponting said on the ICC Review Podcast. “Now that he’s gone past me and only two ahead of him, I’m sure he wants to give himself the best chance to be remembered as the all-time leading run scorer in the game. “So, as long as the hunger’s there … physically, he’s probably as fit as he’s ever been and works exceptionally hard on that side of his game. If the hunger’s still there then I’m never going to write him off.” Ponting said it would not be long before Kohli scores the 150 runs he needs to go past Sangakkara, suggesting he could even do so in India’s next game against New Zealand on Sunday. Catching Tendulkar, who retired from ODI cricket in 2012 aged 39, would be much more challenging but not impossible. “It’s crazy when you think about it … how good Virat’s been over such a long ******* of time, yet he’s still 4,000 runs behind Sachin,” Ponting added. “It just goes to show how good Sachin was, but also his longevity in the game. How long Sachin played for and how long you’re able to maintain such high levels for as a player. “That’s the one thing I’ve always judged excellence on, is how long you can maintain it for.” Source link #Kohli #beat #Tendulkars #ODI #record #Ricky #Ponting Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  10. Coventry battery firm wants to build gigafactory Coventry battery firm wants to build gigafactory BBC There are plans to build a gigafactory Coventry Airport Talks have taken place with a battery firm about the possibility of building a gigafactory in Coventry. Manufacturing firm Volklec has announced it will begin producing batteries at the *** Battery Industrialisation Centre and hopes to ultimately build a £1bn gigafactory in the next five years. Although no final decision has been made about the location, talks have taken place with the city council about it being built at neighbouring Coventry Airport. Plans for a gigafactory – producing batteries for electric vehicles – at the airport site have been talked about for the best part of a decade. CouncillorJim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs at Coventry City Council, confirmed talks had been held with Volklec According to the latest figures obtained by the BBC, £25.25m of taxpayers’ money has been committed to plans to build a gigafactory at Coventry Airport project since 2021. Those funds have come via the West Midlands Combined Authority and Coventry City Council – with an additional £2m pledged by Coventry Airport Limited. Yet, to date, no firm has committed to the project and there have been no visible signs of progress. Councillor Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs at the city council, confirmed talks had been held with Volklec. He said a gigafactory at the airport “had to happen” and added “I think with the right will, and the right people, it won’t be long before we can make a proper announcement.” Asked about his hopes of securing investment from central government to kick-start the project, he said: “I’m very confident that will happen. There hasn’t been one single gigafactory anywhere in the world that hasn’t benefitted from the relevant government providing grants to make that happen.” Phil Popham, executive director at Volklec, said it was too early to say where the firm would build its base Volklec’s first batteries are expected to roll of the production line at the UKBIC before the end of the year. About 100 jobs will be created initially and there are hopes 1,000 jobs will be created if a new gigafactory is built. Phil Popham, executive director of Volklec, said millions of power cells would be built under an agreement with ******** partner Far East Battery and would be used to power everything from road vehicles to marine technology. 12. *** universities warned to ‘stress-test’ assessments as 92% of students use AI | Universities *** universities warned to ‘stress-test’ assessments as 92% of students use AI | Universities British universities have been warned to “stress-test” all assessments after new research revealed “almost all” undergraduates are using generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in their studies. A survey of 1,000 students – both domestic and international – found there had been an “explosive increase” in the use of genAI in the past 12 months. Almost nine out of 10 (88%) in the 2025 poll said they used tools such as ChatGPT for their assessments, up from 53% last year. The proportion using any AI tool surged from 66% in 2024 to 92% in 2025, meaning just 8% of students are not using AI, according to a report published by the Higher Education Policy Institute and Kortext, a digital etextbook provider. Josh Freeman, the report’s author, said such dramatic changes in behaviour in just 12 months were almost unheard of, and warned: “Universities should take heed: generative AI is here to stay. “There are urgent lessons here for institutions,” Freeman said. “Every assessment must be reviewed in case it can be completed easily using AI. That will require bold retraining initiatives for staff in the power and potential of generative AI. “Institutions will not solve any of these problems alone and should seek to share best practice with each other. Ultimately, AI tools should be harnessed to advance learning rather than inhibit it.” Students say they use genAI to explain concepts, summarise articles and suggest research ideas, but almost one in five (18%) admitted to including AI-generated text directly in their work. “When asked why they use AI, students most often find it saves them time (51%) and improves the quality of their work (50%),” the report said. “The main factors putting them off using AI are the risk of being accused of academic misconduct and the fear of getting false or biased results.” One student told researchers: “I enjoy working with AI as it makes life easier when doing assignments; however, I do get scared I’ll get caught.” Women are more worried about these factors than men, who show greater enthusiasm for AI, as do wealthier students and those on science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) courses. According to the report, half of students from the most privileged backgrounds used genAI to summarise articles, compared with 44% from the least privileged backgrounds. “The digital divide we identified in 2024 appears to have widened,” the report concluded. Students generally believe their universities have responded effectively to concerns over academic integrity, with 80% saying their institution’s policy is “clear” and 76% believe their institution would spot the use of AI in assessments. Only a third (36%) of students have received training in AI skills from their university. “They dance around the subject,” said one student. “It’s not banned but not advised, it’s academic misconduct if you use it, but lecturers tell us they use it. Very mixed messages.” Dr Thomas Lancaster, a computer scientist at Imperial College London who researches academic integrity, said: “Students who aren’t using generative AI tools are now a tiny *********. “I know some students are resistant to AI, and I can understand the ethical concerns, but they’re really putting themselves at quite a competitive disadvantage, both in education, and in showing themselves as ready for future careers.” A spokesperson for Universities *** said: “To effectively educate the workforce of tomorrow, universities must increasingly equip students to work in a world that will be shaped by AI, and it’s clear progress is being made. “But they need to balance this with the challenges posed by a rapidly developing technology. This survey shows that universities and students are alive to the potential risks posed by AI tools in the context of exams and assessment. “All have codes of conduct that include severe penalties for students found to be submitting work that is not their own and they engage students from day-one on the implications of cheating.” Source link #universities #warned #stresstest #assessments #students #Universities Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The glitch was first highlighted in a viral post on TikTok, when the speech-to-text tool sometimes briefly flashed up the word “Trump” when they said “racist”, and was later repeated by others on social media. “We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers dictation and we are rolling out a fix,” an Apple spokesperson said. The company blamed the bug on its tool displaying words that have “phonetic overlap” before the “intended word” is identified, which in this case included words with the “r” consonant. However, the glitch caused outrage among some conservative commentators in the US, who have long accused big tech companies of political bias against those on the right. The bug also called into question Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities, only a day after the company announced a $500bn (£395bn) investment in the US, widely interpreted as a move designed to appeal to Donald Trump’s government. The tech company said on Monday that the investment, running over the next four years, would include a giant factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers and would create about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country. The AI announcement came only days after Apple’s chief executive, Tim Cook, reportedly met Trump. The company could face 10% tariffs on its devices, many of which are assembled in China before being imported into the US. The maker of the iPhone did manage to secure some waivers on tariffs levied on China during Trump’s first term. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. In 2018, during his first term in the White House, Apple said that new and ongoing investments would contribute $350bn to the US economy over five years. Since Trump’s election and his signing of a slew of executive orders overturning diversity, equity and inclusion measures in the federal government, many in the tech sector have followed suit with a rollback of similar schemes – including Google, Amazon and Meta. However, on Tuesday Apple shareholders voted down a proposal urging the company to drop its own DEI programmes. 20. Japan’s ANA taps Boeing, Airbus, Embraer in 77-jet order Japan’s ANA taps Boeing, Airbus, Embraer in 77-jet order By Rocky Swift and Nobuhiro Kubo TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan’s ANA Holdings said on Tuesday it planned to place a company-record order for up to 77 aircraft to replenish its fleet and take advantage of growing demand for travel. The order was its largest ever in terms of aircraft numbers and was worth more than 2.1 trillion yen ($14 billion) at catalogue prices before any discounts, ANA said. Aircraft are typically sold at roughly half their list price, aviation analysts say. The deal includes 68 firm orders and nine options, potentially bringing the overall purchase to 30 aircraft from Boeing, 27 from Airbus, and 20 from Embraer. The firm part of the order includes 18 GE-powered Boeing 787 wide-body jets and 15 Embraer E190-E2 regional aircraft. It also involves 27 Airbus A321neo-family narrowbodies and eight Boeing 737 MAX. Delivery of the planes is expected between 2028 and 2033. Growth in tourism to Japan has exploded in recent years, with annual visitors reaching record numbers. The airline said that its order reflected an expected increase in passenger demand, including from visitors to Japan. “So looking at the growth of the overall market, we want to procure the necessary supply just as it’s needed,” Daisuke Suzuki, ANA’s director of corporate strategy, told a briefing. Suzuki said the Embraer aircraft would allow the airline to “flexibly adjust supply to demand in our medium to long-term domestic operations.” EMBRAER WIN ANA’s order marks a breakthrough in Japan for Brazil-based Embraer’s most recent generation of E2 regional jets and a setback for Airbus, which has been trying to get a Japanese foothold for its A220. Its current fleet does not include any aircraft from Embraer, the world’s third-largest planemaker. Embraer’s focus is on up to 150-seat single-aisle aircraft, sitting just below Airbus’ and Boeing’s best-selling A320 and 737 narrowbody families, which carry between 150 and 240 passengers. The deal also illustrates a turning point in Japan’s efforts to promote its domestic regional aircraft industry. ANA had ordered at least 15 of the made-in-Japan SpaceJet regional plane that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was developing, but the programme stalled in 2023 after delivery delays, in part due to difficulty obtaining necessary certifications. ANA Holdings runs passenger and cargo carrier ANA, and low-cost airlines Peach Aviation and AirJapan. It operated 277 aircraft as of end-December and expects its fleet size to be at around 320 aircraft by the 2030 financial year. Story Continues In January, the company said it would increase the number of international flights in its 2025 fiscal year to meet growing demand, but would maintain last year’s level of domestic flights. At this time, of the eight million homes that were without electricity, 4.15 million have gradually recovered their power, although it is still unstable,” Boric said. “What happened today outrages us. It is unacceptable that the daily lives of thousands of Chileans are affected by the responsibility of one or more companies. It is the duty of the Chilean state to enforce these responsibilities,” he continued. According to the National Electrical Coordinator, the blackout was caused by the “disconnection of the 500 kV transmission system” in the Norte Chico region. Source link #State #Emergency #Declared #Chile #Blackout #Leaves #Millions #Power Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Alibaba makes AI video generation model free to use globally Alibaba makes AI video generation model free to use globally The Alibaba office building is seen in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China, on Aug 28, 2024. CFOTO | Future Publishing | Getty Images Alibaba on Wednesday said that it has made its video generation artificial intelligence models free to use, further ramping up competition with rivals like OpenAI. The ******** giant said it is open sourcing four models that are part of its Wan2.1 series, the latest version of the company’s foundational AI model that can generate images and video from text and image inputs. These models will be available via Alibaba Cloud’s Model Scope and Hugging Face, a huge repository of AI models. They will be accessible to academics, researchers and commercial institutions globally. Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares closed nearly 5% higher. Open-source AI tech has been thrown into the spotlight since ******** firm DeepSeek rattled global markets in January, after claiming its artificial intelligence model was trained at a fraction of the cost of leading AI players and on less-advanced Nvidia chips. DeepSeek’s model is open source, like Alibaba’s, meaning it can be downloaded and modified by others. Open source differs from proprietary models such as those created by OpenAI and do not produce revenue for companies. Open sourcing a technology serves a number of purposes, including driving innovation and building a community around a product. A debate is currently swirling about whether AI models will become commoditized. ******** firms in particular have been pushing forward with open source models, Alibaba’s and DeepSeek’s now among the most popular used globally. Alibaba published its first open source model in August 2023, while Meta is leading the open source charge with its Llama models in the U.S. Alibaba’s stock has been on a tear this year, with the Hong Kong listing up 66% in 2025 to date due to factors including the company’s improved financial performance, its perception as one of the key AI players in China and recent signals of further support from ******** president Xi Jinping for the domestic private sector.
