Nvidia enjoys $130B annual earnings despite gaming segment ‘supply constraints’ Nvidia enjoys $130B annual earnings despite gaming segment ‘supply constraints’ Nvidia on Wednesday published its financial results for the final quarter of its fiscal 2025 and shared progress of its Blackwell GPU ramp. The company’s earnings for the FY2025 exceeded a whopping $130 billion, which is an all-time high for the company. Nvidia’s sales of Blackwell GPUs for datacenters also significantly exceeded expectations in Q4 of FY2025. However, the company admitted that it was constrained to meet demand for its gaming products last quarter, which is why sales of GeForce GPUs dropped both sequentially and year-over-year. Record Q4 amid drop of gaming revenue Nvidia posted revenue of $39.33 billion for Q4 FY2025, marking a 12% sequential increase and a massive 78% year-over-year (YoY) growth. The company’s net income achieved $22.091 billion as its gross margins hit 73%, down 3% compared to the same quarter a year ago due to Blackwell ramp as well as production of low-yield Blackwell material in the previous quarter. For the year, Nvidia earned $130.497 billion, up 114% YoY. The company’s net income was $72.88 billion and its gross margin was 75%, up 2.3% from 2024. (Image credit: Nvidia) In the final quarter of FY2025, Nvidia’s datacenter segment continued to dominate the company’s earnings. It generated $35.58 billion, up 16% QoQ and 93% YoY. Compute GPUs accounted for the lion’s share of Nvidia’s datacenter sales ($32.556 billion), whereas sales of networking products totaled $3.024 billion. Nvidia says that sales of its Blackwell GPUs in the fourth quarter reached $11 billion, significantly more than Nvidia planned. The company indicated that demand for Blackwell GPUs for AI and HPC is overwhelming, which explains significant Blackwell revenue. (Image credit: Nvidia) By contrast, Nvidia’s gaming revenue dropped to $2.54 billion, down 22% QoQ and 11% YoY, due to supply constraints as demand remains strong. Considering the fact that Nvidia now uses the same TSMC production lines for AI and gaming GPUs, it is not surprising that the company prioritizes production of expensive AI processors to lower-margin client products. “ Full year [gaming] revenue of 11.4 billion increased 9% year-on-year, and demand remains strong throughout the holiday,” said Colette Kress, chief financial officer of Nvidia. “However, Q4 shipments were impacted by supply constraints.” Still, Nvidia’s professional visualization (ProViz) revenue reached $511 million, up 5% QoQ and 10% YoY, and OEM and other contributed $126 million, up 30% QoQ and 40% YoY. The Automotive segment saw the most significant YoY growth at 103%, reaching $570 million (up 27% QoQ), fueled by adoption of Nvidia’s platforms by various automakers. Record year For the whole year, Nvidia’s revenue totaled $130.5 billion, marking an impressive 114% year-over-year growth compared to $60.9 billion in FY2024. Nvidia’s datacenter segment was of course the primary driver, generating $115.2 billion (up 142% YoY), followed by gaming revenue with $11.35 billion (up 9% YoY), ProViz business with $1.88 billion (up 21% YoY), and Automotive with $1.694 billion. OEM and other businesses earned Nvidia $389 million, up 27% YoY. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. (Image credit: Nvidia) Impressive outlook Nvidia projects Q1 FY2026 revenue of $43 billion ±2%, reflecting continued strong demand for AI GPUs for datacenters. Gross margins are expected to be 70.6% due to Blackwell ramp up, which costs Nvidia a lot of money. To support ramp up of Blackwell (both for datacenters and gaming PCs) as well as eventual ramp up of Blackwell Ultra (B300-series), Nvidia has to pre-purchase production capacity. As of the end of FY2025, Nvidia’s purchase commitments and obligations for inventory and production capacity were $30.8 billion, including new capacity commitments and components for rackscale and other solutions. Supply and capacity prepayments were $5.1 billion. Source link #Nvidia #enjoys #130B #annual #earnings #gaming #segment #supply #constraints Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Summit Insights Group’s KinNgai Chan downgraded Nvidia to hold from a buy rating on concern that less computing power may be needed for developing large language models. “We believe risk-reward is no longer favorable for the stock due to persistent high whispers numbers and rumor of entry into the PC Client MPU market,” Chan said, referring to memory protection units. “While we think the datacenter capex growth for the training market will continue to benefit NVDA, we believe the lower computing power requirement for inference while not evident today, will undoubtably have a negative impact to NVDA’s financial performance in the medium- to longer-term,” Chan added. Revenue continues to surge at Nvidia as the company rides the AI ***** with its data center graphics processing units , or GPUs, which comprise the vast majority of the market for AI accelerators. Nvidia’s revenue in the quarter ended in January rose 78%, and full fiscal-year revenue soared 114% to $130.5 billion. ******** AI startup DeepSeek has stood out by requiring significantly less computing power compared to other large language models. Many killed as gunfire, blasts rock Congo rebel rally Many killed as gunfire, blasts rock Congo rebel rally Crowds fled and people were killed and wounded as gunfire and explosions rang out at a mass rally held by rebel leader Corneille Nangaa in Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern city of Bukavu, residents said. People ran through the streets, some bleeding and carrying limp bodies, video showed. Residents said they saw dead bodies, but there was no immediate information on the number of casualties. Nangaa told Reuters by phone that Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi had ordered Thursday’s attack, without providing evidence. There was no immediate comment from the government Nangaa said that he was not wounded and other senior members of the rebel grouping – which has battled Congo’s army and seized swathes of territory in the east since the beginning of the year – were safe. Congo, the United Nations and Western powers say neighbouring Rwanda is backing Nangaa’s M23 rebel group – accusations Rwanda denies. The rebel advance has stirred fears of a regional war that could draw in Congo’s neighbours. In his speech before the shooting started, Nangaa told a crowd of thousands that M23 had come to Bukavu to bring security. The group has controlled the city since February 16. “There will be special units and patrols that will take place in all the communes,” said Nangaa, who was making his first public appearance in Bukavu since the takeover. The shooting started at the end of the meeting, one resident said. “There was shooting in all directions. We don’t know what happened. There are injured people, dead people, I don’t know.” M23 has been trying to demonstrate that it can restore order in the territory it has captured from Congo’s army, and has re-opened ports and schools. This M23 advance is the gravest escalation in more than a decade of the long-running conflict in eastern Congo, rooted in the spillover of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide into Congo and the struggle for control of Congo’s vast minerals resources. Rwanda has said it is defending itself against the threat from a Hutu militia, which it says is fighting with the Congolese military. Woman, 19, dies in suspected XL Bully attack as two people arrested Woman, 19, dies in suspected XL Bully attack as two people arrested A 19-year-old woman has died in a suspected XL Bully attack at a flat in Bristol. South Western Ambulance Service were called to the incident in Cobhorn Drive in the Hartcliffe area of the city at around 7pm last night. The teenager was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene. Two people, a man and a woman both aged in their 20s, have been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death and possession of a prohibited breed of dog. Avon and Somerset Police said the dog was seized and sedated. “Initial reports suggested it may be an XL Bully, but confirming the breed will form part of the assessment process,” a spokesperson said. Neighbourhood Inspector Terry Murphy said: “Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the family of the young woman who’s tragically died as a result of yesterday evening’s incident. They have been updated and will be supported by a family liaison officer. “I’d also like to thank the officers and paramedics who attended yesterday evening and tried to save her life. Support is in place for them.” Insp Murphy said an investigation into the attack had been launched. She said: “As part of this work, Cobhorn Drive was closed last night and I thank everyone for their patience and understanding about our need to do this. “There will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days, including neighbourhood officers, and if you have any concerns please do speak to them.” Under a change in law, it became ******** to own an XL Bully without a certificate of exemption from 1 February 2024. In the first five months following the ban, the number of dog attacks in England and Wales rose by nine per cent, according to data obtained by The Independent. Last month, police chiefs warned the legislation would be no “overnight fix”. State Street, Apollo team up to launch first of its kind private credit ETF State Street, Apollo team up to launch first of its kind private credit ETF Omar Marques | Lightrocket | Getty Images There’s a new ETF in town. SPDR SSGA Apollo IG Public & Private Credit ETF (PRIV) will trade Thursday at the NYSE. This fund intends to invest at least 80% of its net assets in investment grade debt securities, including a combination of public credit and private credit. What’s surprising is that there is a significant component of private equity in the ETF wrapper. Because private credit is illiquid, it has been a problem getting this in an ETF wrapper, since ETFs need liquidity. They are trying to solve this problem by having Apollo provide credit assets and they will purchase those investments back if need be. ETFs have owned illiquid investments in the past (there are bank loan ETFs that have illiquid investments) so this is not the first time this issue has been addressed. But Wall Street is eager to provide access to private equity and credit to the masses, and ETFs are the obvious wrapper. Normally, ETFs are only allowed to own illiquid investments up to 15% of the fund, but the SEC says that in this case private credit can range between 10% and 35%, but can be above or below that. This filing has been controversial. One early concern was that if Apollo is the only firm providing the liquidity, it naturally raises questions about what type of pricing State Street will get. However, State Street apparently can source from other firms if it can get better prices. Another issue: Apollo is required to buy back the loans, but only up to a daily limit, and it’s not clear what happens after that. It’s not clear if the market makers would accept private credit instruments for redemption. Bottom line: This is a groundbreaking but very complicated ETF. It will be closely monitored for liquidity. Note: Anna Paglia, Executive Vice President, Chief Business Officer for State Street Global Advisors, will be on ETF Edge Monday to explain how this ETF works. Stripe’s valuation climbs to $91.5 billion in secondary stock ***** Stripe’s valuation climbs to $91.5 billion in secondary stock ***** John Collison, president and co-founder of Stripe. Christophe Morin | IP3 | Getty Images Stripe announced a tender offer for employees and shareholders on Thursday that values the payments startup at $91.5 billion, the closest the company has been to its peak valuation of $95 billion in 2021. “We very much care about providing good liquidity for employees and existing shareholders,” Stripe co-founder and President John Collison told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin in an interview on “Squawk Box.” As for the company’s long-awaited public market debut, Collison said, “We are not dogmatic on the public vs. private question,” and “have no near-term IPO plans.” Stripe also revealed in its annual letter on Thursday that it generated $1.4 trillion in total payment volume in 2024, up 38% from the year prior. The company said it was profitable in 2024, and expects to remain so this year. Collison said the business can’t be managed on a “super tight quarterly EPS basis because this growth tends to come in waves.” Stripe ranked third on CNBC’s Disruptor 50 List for 2024, jumping from the 28th position in 2023. Collison said the artificial intelligence ***** has been key to the company’s recent growth. High-profile AI startups OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Mistral are all Stripe clients. “Unlike maybe previous booms that were more speculative in nature where you had asset price speculation, here we are seeing an AI ***** that is very real,” Collison said. “There’s a bunch of companies that have grown and grown and grown over the past few years, but they’ve grown because they have real revenue and they have real revenue because they have customers that find their products really useful.” More than 700 AI agent startups launched on Stripe last year, according to the company’s annual letter. Collison said a future where agents will make purchases for human customers is inevitable. Founded in 2010, Stripe has regularly conducted tender offers to allow early investors and employees to sell a portion of their equity in order to reduce the pressure to go public. A year ago the company announced a tender offer at a $65 billion valuation. Riot Games Rolls Back Some Unpopular League Of Legends Decisions Riot Games Rolls Back Some Unpopular League Of Legends Decisions Riot Games’ League of Legends has been around since 2009, and it has attracted a large group of fans from around the world since its release. And when those fans aren’t happy, they aren’t afraid to be vocal about it. Some of Riot’s most recent moves–including the removal of Hextech chests–angered players so much that the company is now walking back that decision as well as a few other unpopular changes. In the video above–and in the accompanying post on Riot’s site–Senior Vice President Andrei Van Roon and League of Legends executive producer Paul Bellezza explained why the company is reversing its recent decisions. Bellezza noted that their choices had eroded some of the trust that fans had for Riot, and they want to fix that. The first step in rebuilding that trust is coming in next week’s patch, which will restore Hextech chests to the game. Eight chests will be available through the free seasonal pass, while players can earn two additional chests through the game’s Honor system. The dev post notes that the Honor system is still being worked out, but it’s meant to reward players who are good teammates and respectful opponents. League of Legends’ Exalted skin for Sahn Uzal Mordekaiser is also being delayed to give the developers more time to “deliver on its core fantasy.” Fans have been very critical about the Radiant Serpent Sett and Fractured Arcane Jinx Exalted skins, which is why Riot plans to put greater effort into future Exalted skins to meet players’ expectations. Riot is also reducing the cost of unlocking champions through League of Legends’ in-game currency, Blue Essence. As of the next patch, the price for all champions will drop by 50% in the hope that players can more easily expand their roster with new and older characters. Earlier this month, Riot announced that the League of Legends fighting game, 2XKO, won’t be getting the large playtest in March that was originally planned. Instead, a smaller playtest will be held while the company builds its infrastructure for a larger test later this year. League of Legends also recently added Mel Medarda to the roster, following her larger role in the second and final season of Arcane. Mel was also featured in a recently released cinematic that appears to take place after the series finale of Arcane. Amazon’s Ocelot quantum chip uses ‘cat cubits’ to ‘reduce error correction by up to 90%’ Amazon’s Ocelot quantum chip uses ‘cat cubits’ to ‘reduce error correction by up to 90%’ Earlier this morning, Amazon’s AWS (or just Amazon Web Services) introduced Ocelot, a new scalable quantum computing solution claimed to reduce the costs of quantum computing error correction by up to 90% “compared to current approaches.” Perhaps coincidentally, this scalable quantum computing solution debuted within less than ten days of Microsoft’s own scalable quantum computing solution, Majorana 1, though that solution is focused more on accelerating raw quantum computing power through new “topoconductor” technology rather than lowering the pricing of existing quantum computing error correction capabilities. What AWS’ Ocelot chip seems to be prioritizing is quantum error correction, but especially making it less expensive to implement. When one considers the scale at which AWS operates — supporting over 1.45 million companies according to Avention Media, with the list including powerhouses like Netflix — seeking out ways to reduce costs for cutting-edge, scalable quantum computing solutions makes a lot of sense. But how does it work, and why is it named Ocelot? Well, like the infamous Metal Gear Solid (1999) character, Ocelot is named after a specific breed of wild cat native to the Americas. AWS Ocelot is also stated to be built around a novel design that implements “cat qubits” that intrinsically suppress certain forms of errors, which should reduce the costs and resources required for quantum error correction. Add “additional quantum error components into a microchip that can be manufactured in a scalable fashion using processes borrowed from the microelectronics industry,” and you’re left with the AWS Ocelot architecture. On the off-chance you’re reading this without knowing what a regular old qubit is, just think of it as a quantum computing equivalent to a regular old computing bit. Regular old bits can only represent a “1” or a “0”, while qubits can represent either of those or “a quantum superposition of 0 and 1”, per Microsoft‘s documentation. So, what exactly then is a “cat qubit”? Apparently, just a form of qubit with some forms of quantum error correction built in from the ground up. Basically, a qubit equivalent to ECC (error-checking code) RAM. According to Oskar Painter, AWS director of Quantum Hardware, “With the recent advancements in quantum research, it is no longer a matter of if, but when practical, fault-tolerant quantum computers will be available for real-world applications. Ocelot is an important step on that journey. In the future, quantum chips built according to the Ocelot architecture could cost as little as one-fifth of current approaches, due to the drastically reduced number of resources required for error correction. Concretely, we believe this will accelerate our timeline to a practical quantum computer by up to five years.” These are some very strong, encouraging words — particularly considering Microsoft’s own recent comments around Majorana 1 also point toward “quantum computers capable of solving meaningful, industrial-scale problems in years, not decades”. Time will tell which megacorporation’s approach to feasible quantum computing will lead to viable market products sooner, but the competition heating up like this should only prove a good thing for consumers and the enterprise in the long run. Nebius Slides Post-Earnings: A Long-Term Buy Opportunity?
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Nebius Slides Post-Earnings: A Long-Term Buy Opportunity? Nebius Slides Post-Earnings: A Long-Term Buy Opportunity? It’s been a rollercoaster start to the year for shares of Nebius Group (NASDAQ:). The AI infrastructure stock has seen dramatic swings, hitting new 52-week and all-time highs, only to retreat sharply following its recent earnings report. As of Monday’s close, Nebius shares had slid over 28% from their 52-week high set just the previous week, driven by a combination of a market-wide sell-off and mixed analyst reactions to the company’s Q4 and full-year 2024 financial results. With the stock now testing its 50-day SMA, investors might be asking whether this pullback presents a compelling long-term buying opportunity. Let’s dive into the latest catalysts and the road ahead for Nebius. Revenue Surges, But Profitability Remains a Challenge On February 20, 2025, Nebius Group N.V. reported its financial results for Q4 and full-year 2024. The numbers were a mixed bag, showcasing impressive revenue growth but continued struggles with profitability. For Q4 2024, Nebius reported revenue of $37.9 million, reflecting a staggering 466% year-over-year increase. The company’s core AI infrastructure segment surged 602% compared to Q4 2023. Despite this robust top-line growth, Nebius posted an adjusted EBITDA loss of $75.5 million, a modest 7% improvement from the $81.3 million loss in the same quarter the previous year. Net loss from continuing operations climbed to $136.6 million, marking a 55% increase year-over-year. Capital expenditures were also substantial, reaching $417.6 million in Q4 as Nebius continued investing heavily in GPU procurement and data center expansion. For the full year 2024, revenue came in at $117.5 million, a sharp 462% increase from 2023. The adjusted EBITDA loss totaled $266.4 million, and the net loss from continuing operations stood at $396.9 million. The company ended the year with a solid cash position of $2.4 billion, bolstered by a $700 million funding round in December 2024. Looking ahead, Nebius provided ambitious guidance for 2025, projecting an annualized run-rate (ARR) of $220 million by March and scaling to $750 million to $1 billion by December. The company also expects full-year 2025 revenue to land between $500 million and $700 million. While profitability remains elusive, Nebius aims for near-breakeven EBITDA by the end of 2025, supported by plans to expand data center capacity to 100 megawatts, with the potential to scale to over 300 megawatts. Analyst Sentiment: A Divided Outlook Nebius’s Q4 earnings report prompted mixed reactions from the small pool of analysts covering the stock. BWS Financial maintained its Buy rating and raised its price target from $51 to $60 on February 21. The firm highlighted Nebius’s strong Q1 guidance and its path to a $1 billion ARR by year-end, emphasizing its growing AI infrastructure capabilities despite recent volatility. In contrast, Hedgeye Global Technology, once a bullish supporter of Nebius, reversed its stance on February 24, removing its long position. The firm cited “surprising vision misalignment from management” and “light guidance” from the earnings call as reasons for the shift. This unexpected downgrade added to selling pressure, amplifying the post-earnings slide. Following its earnings, another firm initiated coverage of the company. DA Davidson Analysts initiated stock coverage with a Buy rating and a $50 price target. The firm added the stock within D.A. Davidson’s DaVinci initiative for deep tech businesses, noting that Nebius is “emerging as one of the first true alternatives to hyperscaler-dominated AI compute.” The contrasting views reflect both the promise, and the risks tied to Nebius’s ambitious growth strategy, rapid revenue expansion coupled with the challenge of balancing heavy capital investments and profitability. The Long-Term Story Remains Intact Despite the recent pullback, there are compelling reasons to remain optimistic about Nebius’s long-term prospects. Nebius’s core business is well-positioned to benefit from the surging demand for AI infrastructure, especially as companies continue ramping up AI deployments. The company also enjoys solid institutional backing, with NVIDIA’s (NASDAQ:) stake and positions from Soros Capital, Marshall Wace, and Columbus Hill reflecting strong confidence in its future. Robust guidance pointing to a $1 billion ARR target by year-end signals Nebius’s intent to scale aggressively. Furthermore, a key upcoming catalyst is NVIDIA’s earnings report this Wednesday. As a significant AI chip supplier, market leader, and shareholder in Nebius, NVIDIA’s outlook could offer critical insights into the overall health of the AI sector and potential tailwinds for Nebius. Amazon joins quantum race with ‘cat-qubit’ powered chip Amazon joins quantum race with ‘cat-qubit’ powered chip Amazon The Ocelot chip uses so-called “cat qubits” Amazon has become the third tech giant in as many months to announce a breakthrough in quantum computing – a technology that promises vast processing power but is beset by technical difficulties. The firm has unveiled Ocelot a prototype chip built on “cat qubit” technology – an approach that derives its name from the famous “Schrödinger’s cat” thought experiment. The chip seeks to address one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the development of quantum computers – making them error free. Amazon says, taken alongside other recent breakthroughs in the industry, its work means useful quantum computers are likely to be with us sooner than previously thought. But how quickly these machines will be powerful enough to be practically useful for a range of commercial applications is a matter of debate among experts. Oskar Painter of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Computing at the California Institute of Technology, where the work was carried out, told the BBC that recent progress meant an “aggressive date” was now “looking more and more realistic”. “Five years ago I would have said maybe 20 or 30 years”, he said but added “this timeline’s come in quite a bit.” Ultimately AWS, which provides cloud computing services, would like to offer quantum computing services to its customers, but Mr Painter also said he believed the advanced machines could eventually help optimise the vast global logistics of Amazon’s retail business. “You know, a company like Amazon, you make a one percent improvement in that and you’re talking large dollars right? Quantum computers could enable you to do that more effectively, more real time – and that’s the real value there,” he explained. What is a cat qubit? Quantum computers solve problems by exploiting the strange properties of matter and energy at very small scales, as described by the science of quantum physics. Quantum computers won’t replace so-called “classical” computers, but promise to be able to solve problems even the most powerful modern computers cannot – yielding new discoveries such as better batteries and new medicines. But that potential is being held up by the problem of errors. Quantum computers are extremely sensitive to noise in their environment – vibrations, heat, electromagnetic interference from mobile phones and WIFI networks, or even cosmic rays and radiation from outer space can all cause them to make errors, which then need to be corrected. Getty Images The new chip has five cat qubits, named after the Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment Cat qubits are one attempt at solving this problem by engineering error resistance into the design of the qubits it uses. Qubits are the fundamental elements of quantum computers, the equivalent of bits in the computers most of us use today. Cat qubits are named in honour of Erwin Schrödinger, whose cat-in-a-box question in 1935 helped illuminate some of the thinking behind quantum theory. Amazon believes the new chip, which has just five cat qubits out of a total of 14 key components, could reduce the costs of correcting quantum errors by up to 90%, compared to current approaches. The technology of cat qubits isn’t exclusive to Amazon, a French company named Alice & Bob carried out pioneering work on the tech and continues to evolve the technology. Amazon believes the new chip offers a path to scaling up to more powerful machines with this type of error proofing built in, but researchers admit there are many challenges ahead. Michael Cuthbert director of the ***’s National Quantum Computing Centre welcomed the progress Amazon had made but told the BBC it remained to be seen the effect it would have on the speed with which the industry is able to develop really useful quantum computers: “Error correction is a vital step necessary in the long-term development of quantum computing. It is the crucial step that turns quantum computing into a practical and commercial tool we can use to solve complex problems in chemistry, materials science, medicine, logistics and energy.” “Part of the challenge is how to scale the revolutionary technology efficiently – mechanisms that enable error correction without huge overheads in chip size, energy consumption and systems complexity are really welcome.” Amazon researchers have published their findings in a research paper in the scientific journal Nature Pivot point Amazon joins Microsoft and Google in announcing a new experimental chip. But is this flurry of announcements the result of clever research or clever PR? Or is it coincidence, the tech equivalent of the saying buses always come in threes? Heather West follows the quantum computing industry for the International Data Corporation and was briefed on the new chip by Amazon in advance of publication. She describes Amazon’s results as an “advancement” rather than a breakthrough. All three recent announcements have focused on reducing errors, and she tells me the industry is “pivoting” from a focus on the number of qubits to a focus the “ability to use these these systems at scale to solve real world life problems. And by doing so we need to be able to solve the error correction within the quantum systems”. However Mr Painter agreed “100%” that it wouldn’t be easy to scale up today’s experimental systems. How to build an effective IAM architecture How to build an effective IAM architecture Identity and access management, or IAM — the discipline of ensuring the right individuals have access to the right things at the right times — sometimes falls into the category of things that are so foundational to enterprise security that we don’t stop to think about them. Like many technologies that have reached a high level of maturity, IAM becomes plumbing; it goes unnoticed until there’s a problem. That doesn’t mean IT decision-makers should stop paying attention. To devise the best IAM architecture for specific use cases, an organization must be clear about what it hopes to accomplish. Let’s examine the key questions and decisions involved. 3 key steps to selecting an IAM architecture There are important starting points, including knowing who will be authenticated and why, determining which applications users employ and understanding where those users are located. As these questions are answered, pay particular attention to these areas: SaaS applications hosted outside the enterprise environment. Identity requirements for nonhuman actors (e.g., machines, applications and containers), including potentially ephemeral identities. Usage that presupposes identities not belonging to the organization. The process for creating an effective IAM architecture can be broken down into three steps. Step 1 Security teams should make a list of usage that they anticipate users will interact with, including applications, services, components and other elements. Consolidating this into a list helps validate with others in the organization that usage assumptions are correct. It can also be used as input into the product selection process when evaluating if IAM mechanisms provide the needed capabilities. As you do this and as outlined above, factor in nonhuman identities as well as human ones since you’ll want to make sure to address both. Taking action to manage these nonhuman identities is becoming one of the major trends in IAM and cybersecurity. Step 2 Think through how different environments — for example, cloud SaaS applications and on-premises applications such as domain login — will be linked together. There are times when different systems might be needed to accommodate different types of applications and usage. Understanding which other systems exist outside enterprise boundaries is useful because these systems might need to federate in specific ways. For example, Cloud Provider A might enable federation via Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), while Provider B does so via OpenID Connect. Each of these needs to be accounted for. Step 3 Consider carefully which specific areas of IAM are most important to the business. The following list of questions will help enterprises evaluate potential vendors and systems: Is MFA necessary? Do customers and employees need to be supported in the same system? Are automated provisioning and deprovisioning required? Which standards need to be supported? That said, there are many IAM architectural elements, approaches and design principles to consider when evaluating the best option for your organization’s business needs. The evolving IAM architecture From an architectural point of view, the design of most IAM implementations is relatively straightforward at first glance. Complexities only arise when the implications are considered and extended to particular use cases. Consider the Open Security Architecture (OSA) design pattern for Identity Management, SP-010 (Figure 1). OSA represents an open, collaborative repository for security architectural design patterns — i.e., strategies that encapsulate systems in pictorial format for use by the community. Figure 1. SP-010: Identity Management Pattern by OSA, licensed under CC BY-SA. Figure 1 shows the diagram portion of the OSA IAM design pattern. Textual elements, which further explain the conceptual view, description and other salient notes, have been left out for the sake of brevity and because most of these details are implied in the diagram. A few assumptions are implicit in the diagram. First, it addresses multiple roles that interact with IAM components, as well as systems and services that rely on it. Second, it separates policy enforcement — in this diagram, enforced at the server/service level — from policy decisions, which are handled via the combination of the directory and authentication service. Lastly, it is built around the assumption that the organization owns and manages user identity. This is a traditional design pattern, and it is important to note that some of its underlying assumptions are in transition in a few ways. First, there is the question of federation to external service providers, which can require separate infrastructure to set up and maintain. Then, there is the question of extending identity into the cloud, which, depending on the model employed, can either use state transfer — for example, SAML or OpenID Connect — to federate between on-premises and cloud or can use cloud-native identity providers directly. There is also the question of who is being authenticated and for what purpose. The OSA diagram is clearly targeted at employees. Organizations today must maintain multiple identities beyond their employees, such as customers, application users, system administrative users, machine identities and other types of users. An organization employing a model like this for internal user authentication and access control could very well also have a production application that contains customer user accounts. This might be as sophisticated as a customer IAM platform (CIAM), or depending on the use, it could be as simple as a database table that contains application-specific user credentials. While descriptive of how IAM has functioned historically, the OSA diagram is likely not particularly descriptive of how most organizations conduct IAM today. This is true because of changes in how IAM is used for employees. Also, it doesn’t address customer identities or fully account for technology changes that complicate how IAM operates. Differences in IAM approaches If IAM methods are changing and legacy approaches are in a state of transition, how should enterprises select the best approach for their needs? There are a few things to consider: What is the organization looking to do? What is the scope? Where is the source? It is important to remember that IAM is a huge discipline. It includes several subdisciplines, such as authentication, privileged identity management, authorization and access control, federation, role-based access control (RBAC) and numerous others. There are also multiple different kinds of users, from customers and privileged accounts to service accounts, internal employees, business partners and more. When selecting IAM architectures, organizations must also consider the intersection points with environments — and, in particular, sources of identity and identity providers — that they don’t directly control. You’ll want to make sure you account for cloud services and third parties, such as business partner environments, identity providers, as-a-service implementations and so on. When all this is considered, enterprises might — and, in fact, very likely will — end up with a different design than the OSA model presented above. For example, take two completely different models: a CIAM application (i.e., focused on customer identities) versus an internal employee-centric one. The employee-centric one might closely mirror the OSA model. But in a CIAM context, there could be UI components residing at an IaaS provider or implemented in PaaS. There could also be RESTful APIs that implement specific and custom business logic. Within that context, a traditional authentication server and directory (Figure 1) might be employed, or cloud tools, such as an external identity as a service (IDaaS) provider, might be used (Figure 2). Figure 2. Sample CIAM application using cloud tools This approach, while using the same logical elements — directory, policy enforcement points, policy decision points — as the legacy on-premises model, employs them for a different purpose. Despite how placid the waters of IAM might seem on the surface though, IAM has become more complicated than it used to be. Consider how innovations affect identity. With cloud transformation, for example, we’ve seen new IAM strategies emerge, from IDaaS to authentication as a service to native identity systems offered inside cloud environments. Likewise, service-oriented architectures have changed IAM as well, including the creation and rapid adoption of an entirely new authentication state transfer mechanism, OAuth. Looking ahead, there’s more transformation on the horizon. Infrastructure as code is transforming IAM workflows by enabling users to, for example, codify role assignments and IAM policies and permissions. At the same time, Kubernetes is introducing new IAM support structures, such as Kubernetes RBAC and service account management, and requiring adaptation of existing IAM to account for ephemeral instances and other orchestration-specific artifacts. That’s just two examples of many; add to the mix continued proliferation of machine identities, passwordless authentication and policy as code, and you have a landscape that is still very much in transition. The Technology Select Sector SPDR® Fund (NYSE:) is now slightly underwater for the year. Consumer Discretionary Stocks Slide The weakness in consumer discretionary shares is considered a reflection of growing concerns for the economic outlook. North Korea has sent more troops to Russia, South’s spy agency says North Korea has sent more troops to Russia, South’s spy agency says North Korea has sent more soldiers to Russia and re-deployed others to the frontline in the western Kursk region, according to South Korea’s intelligence agency. It said the exact number of extra troops sent was unknown, but military officials quoted in South Korean media have said they believed it was at least 1,000. Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang have confirmed the new deployment. North Korea is thought to have suffered heavy losses in the four months since its troops were first deployed to help Russia in its war with Ukraine. In January, Western officials told the BBC they believed at least 1,000 of the 11,000 troops sent from North Korea had been killed in the past three months. North Korea and Russia did not comment. The South Korean intelligence agency also said on Thursday that North Korean troops already in Russia had been re-deployed to the front line in Kursk at the start of February “after about a month of lull”. Ukrainian special forces fighting in Kursk told the BBC in January that they had not seen any North Korean troops for weeks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed they had returned to the front line. Earlier reports attributed to South Korean intelligence suggested that the North Korean soldiers were unprepared for modern warfare, and were especially vulnerable to Ukrainian drones. However, defectors and other military experts have told the BBC these troops should not be underestimated. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The fighting has led to heavy losses on both sides. Last August, Ukraine made a lightning thrust into the Russian Kursk region, taking border guards by surprise. Russia has been trying to drive them out ever since. While Ukraine’s gains have since been steadily pushed back, partly due to the arrival of the North Koreans in Russia in October, it still retains hundreds of square kilometres of Russian territory and is inflicting huge losses on its enemy. Russia’s military has not publicly revealed its battlefield casualties since September 2022, when it said 5,937 soldiers had been killed. Zelensky has put Ukraine’s military casualties at 45,100 – but a number of military experts in both Ukraine and the West believe the losses are much higher. Reports began emerging that North Korean soldiers had been deployed in October, following the deepening of bilateral ties between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This included the signing a security and defence treaty. Source link #North #Korea #troops #Russia #Souths #spy #agency Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Distinguished trio to retire from Ireland rugby duty Distinguished trio to retire from Ireland rugby duty Three of Ireland’s most capped players, centurions Peter O’Mahony, Cian Healy and Conor Murray, will retire from international rugby at the end of the Six Nations championship. Former Ireland captain O’Mahony and Healy, Ireland’s most capped player, will also retire from professional rugby at the end of the season, while Murray will leave Munster in July to play abroad. “The three of us have done some very special things together but we’re not done yet,” Healy said ahead of their final home game against France on March 8 as Ireland seek to become the first side to win three successive titles outright. All three players have so far won five Six Nations crowns, including the grand slam-winning teams in 2018 and 2023, and have each represented the British & Irish Lions. O’Mahony, the 35-year-old battling flanker, won his 112th cap against Wales last week and captained Ireland to last year’s title. He also skippered his native Munster for years and led the Lions in the opening Test of their 2017 tour. He is the nation’s seventh most capped player, two places behind scrum-half Murray, 35, who made his debut for Ireland in 2011 and forged a key partnership with Johnny Sexton. He was picked for three successive Lions tours in 2013, 2017 and 2021. Healy, 37, passed Brian O’Driscoll as the most capped Irishman last year and on top of his 136 caps, the loosehead prop has played a record 287 games for Leinster since making his debut for the province 18 years ago. “Peter, Cian and Conor have each played a huge role in the success of Irish rugby over the course of their careers … We are determined as a group to end their careers with Ireland on a high,” interim Ireland coach Simon Easterby said in a statement. Latest Sims 4 Update Is Making Kids Look Pregnant Or Jacked Latest Sims 4 Update Is Making Kids Look Pregnant Or Jacked Since the latest Sims 4 update released, players have noticed some odd bugs–even by the Sims’ standards. As of the latest patch, which introduced burglar Robin Banks to the game, child and baby Sims may appear pregnant, have beer-bellies, or be oddly muscular. Some players on The Sims subreddit, as picked up by Eurogamer, noticed that some of their child sims were suddenly appearing pregnant–in one case, the user claimed the bug was affecting every male child in their game. The bug appears to be visual only–the child Sims have thankfully not been given the actual pregnancy state and are not about to give birth to other Sims–but in a game like this, visuals are important to most players. Other posts on the Sims subreddit suggest there are more visual glitches affecting young Sims, with one post showing a collection of strangely buff babies, and another showing a child Sim who looks like he’s been hitting the gym. One Reddit user theorized that the game is somehow mixing up child and adult body types, mistakenly applying adult musculature, beer bellies, or pregnant bellies to child and infant Sims. While it’s easy to fix an adult Sim who’s been assigned the wrong body type, child Sims’ bodies can’t be customized, making this bug difficult to get around. Even aging up and then regressing the Sim doesn’t appear to reset the body-distorting bug, according to players’ experiments. The Sims has a history of unintentionally hilarious bugs, like the one that gave infants freakishly long limbs back when the new life state was first introduced, but EA’s poor track record of fixing bugs means players are often anxious about how long disruptive bugs will stick around. While this bug hasn’t been officially acknowledged yet, EA encourages players to report bugs through its forums, where a thread has been started to catalogue body distortion in child Sims. EA recently re-released The Sims and The Sims 2 as legacy editions, including all their DLC packs. However, these re-releases also launched with a number of bugs that have frustrated players. A Sims community manager has said that the legacy game bugs are currently being investigated. The official ChatGPT Android app may have just leaked the GPT-4.5 launch early The official ChatGPT Android app may have just leaked the GPT-4.5 launch early A mention of GPT-4.5 has just appeared in Android It suggests a full launch could be imminent Right now the model can’t be accessed While OpenAI hasn’t been slacking off in terms of pushing out new features for ChatGPT users, we’re still patiently waiting for the next upgrade to the GPT-4o model that was pushed out last year – and the wait may soon be over. Users of the ChatGPT Android app have spotted (via Android Police) a mention of a “GPT-4.5 research preview” in a pop-up alert inside the app, which sounds to us like the next version of ChatGPT’s underlying model. Tapping on the alert doesn’t actually do anything at the moment though, and it’s not showing up for all Android users either. That suggests this is something that has sneaked out earlier than it should have. While we don’t get an official debut date for GPT-4.5 here – and OpenAI has yet to say much publicly about its launch – the slip-up on the Android app points to the model arriving sooner rather than later, at least in preview form. What could GPT-4.5 bring? I just got this on the android app! I think it’s a big but 4.5 seems imminent pic.twitter.com/pdzCAk5IKTFebruary 26, 2025 OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently went on the record to say that GPT-4.5 would be the final standalone model released by the company, with future releases combining all the available models (including the o-series reasoning models) into a single package. As for what it’ll bring with it, we can expect the usual advances in accuracy, coding, math, summarizing. Larger context windows – prompt lengths, basically – may well be supported, and broader contextual awareness is a strong possibility too. However, this is only going to be a 0.5 advance: GPT-5 should be a ******* upgrade, though it’s unlikely to be launching this year. That should see all of ChatGPT’s tools packaged together, including features such as the recently unveiled Deep Research mode. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. We can expect GPT-4.5 to be exclusive to paying ChatGPT users first of all, before it makes its way down to free users. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s many rivals in the field of AI aren’t showing any signs of slowing down with their own releases.
