How a long-distance gaming romance ended in four violent deaths in a Pierce County home How a long-distance gaming romance ended in four violent deaths in a Pierce County home About six years before Shane Vosler and Sue Bin Lee allegedly killed Vosler’s parents and spent months with the bodies in a Puyallup-area home, the two met playing video games online, and they began to fall in love. It was a team-based shooting game called “Overwatch.” He often played the pink-and-blue, overconfident mech pilot known as D.Va. She was the bow-and-arrow-wielding assassin named Hanzo. Thousands of miles were between them. Friends interviewed by The News Tribune said the two quickly became inseparable. Vosler, a Pierce County native in his late 20s, was living on the second floor of his parents’ house in South Hill. He had attended a private Christian high school and then studied gaming development at a for-profit college in Tukwila that began to shutter while he was a student. Lee lived in Massachusetts and worked as a freelance digital artist. She grew up in South Korea, went to high school there and later attended college at an art school in California. In real life, friends said, they were lonely and socially awkward. Online they attracted small communities of people who adored them. Friends watched or joined them on livestreams of gaming or Lee’s work on illustrations. Together Vosler and Lee developed gaming projects such as a strategy board game called “Alien Hive Invasion.” “They all loved him, you know, and Sue and him were kind of the king and queen of that group,” Paris Rizzi, a longtime friend of Vosler, told The News Tribune. Rizzi, 29, lives in Florida. She’d been friends with Vosler for about a decade by the time he met Lee. She met him playing another game she said Vosler obsessively poured thousands of hours into, “Star Wars: The Old Republic.” Years later she introduced him to “Overwatch,” and more recently it was Rizzi who contacted law enforcement in December to ask deputies to check on Vosler, whom she hadn’t heard from in weeks. She helped deputies get in touch with two relatives who made entry at Vosler’s home Dec. 31 in the 18900 block of Eastwood Avenue East. A composite image shows Shane Vosler, left, sitting in a room of his parent’s house in South Hill during a livestream he posted to YouTube in May 2021. Sue Bin Lee, right, is shown in a Facebook profile photo she used in March 2013. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe Vosler Lee killed Vosler’s parents in their South Hill home during summer 2024. Vosler, Lee and Vosler’s parents, William and Eileen Vosler, were found dead inside. Lee, 34, was found dead in an upstairs bedroom from a contact gunshot wound to the head, and Vosler, 33, was found dead behind a locked bathroom door upstairs. According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, he died the same way. William, 68, and Eileen, 66, were found in states of decomposition in a freezer-fridge unit. The medical examiner later determined they were stabbed to death, with William additionally suffering from blunt head trauma. Investigators seized a handgun and a shotgun from the home along with notes on a leaking kitchen refrigerator that read, “Time of Death July 24th 5:45 AM” and “Time of death July 24th 3:00 PM.” The dates were two days after Eileen’s birthday. The Sheriff’s Office later said investigators determined through evidence that Vosler and Lee had killed William and Eileen during the summer, lived in the house for about six months and then conspired to die by suicide closer to the end of December. Detectives were still trying to determine if Lee pulled the trigger herself or if it was Vosler. A family member of Vosler who was reached by The News Tribune on Thursday declined to comment for this story at this time. ‘Cold, cold blood’ After Rizzi learned what transpired, she wrote to other friends of Vosler and Lee on a Discord channel that she was “in absolute shock.” Over the next week, she shared updates from the news, and others scoured the internet trying to find a way to contact Lee’s mother in South Korea without any luck. In late January, some members of the Discord channel, which was started by Lee, speculated over what drove the two to carry out their crimes and about the level of Lee’s involvement. They looked back on final conversations. One user recalled Vosler telling them his parents were on vacation the last time they played a game together. Vosler’s YouTube channel showed he was still posting “Overwatch” gameplay in November, and Dec. 23 was the last day he logged hours on the gaming platform “Steam.” Rizzi said she thought some people would try to blame what happened on Vosler’s and Lee’s mental health, but she said she knew her friend. She said she thought it was important that Vosler and Lee were held responsible. “I know he in cold, cold blood murdered his parents,” Rizzi said. “I cannot begin to explain to you the horrible horribleness of what they’ve done and sort of how badly they’ve just destroyed the rest of Shane’s family,” she added. Another of Vosler’s longtime friends, Josh Capps, a Kentucky resident, told The News Tribune he knew Shane Vosler as a person with morals and values, and he couldn’t believe Vosler had done what he did. It wasn’t something that someone in their right mind does, Capps, 32, said. Even while they were continuing to live in the house, he said, Vosler and Lee could have sought help. “It breaks my heart because now he’s not going to be remembered as the friend I knew him as,” Capps said. “He’s always going to be remembered as the person who did all that stuff. And that’s what hurts.” Rizzi’s first impressions of Vosler were that he was strange and had “bizarre” ideas of how the world worked. She said he didn’t seem to understand money and had an outsized view of the wealth of his family and others. “He thought everybody had like a chauffeur on speed dial,” Rizzi said. Shane Vosler shows off the makings of a board game he developed and designed with his girlfriend, Sue Bin Lee, titled, “Alien Hive Invasion.” Pierce County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe Shane Vosler and his girlfriend, Sue Bin Lee, killed Shane Vosler’s parents in their South Hill home during summer 2024. Vosler didn’t talk much about his family life, Rizzi said. But she played video games with him every night, and she came to learn a few things about his life at home. Vosler’s parents, William and Eileen, were conservative, and Rizzi said his mother in particular was “very religious.” When Vosler was attending college in the 2010s, he and his mother frequented a Starbucks near the South Hill Mall a few times a week. A barista there at the time, Paul Fix, told The News Tribune he got used to their routine. They’d usually visit in the afternoon. Eileen would get a mocha, and her son always got a frappuccino. From the way Vosler carried himself and dressed — “like a guy in his 50s on vacation,” Fix said, — the barista thought the young man seemed sheltered and awkward. He picked up that his mother drove him to college in Tukwila rather than Vosler driving himself. Vosler and Eileen were nice, Fix said, but the mother sometimes threw him off by bringing up Jesus in conversation. “She’s like, ‘Do you believe that Jesus is your lord and savior?’ And I’m like, uh, yeah, no, totally.” Vosler wasn’t especially religious himself, according to Rizzi. She said it was her impression that Vosler thought God was a joke. But she said Vosler had a deep respect for his parents and would do whatever they asked of him. Capps remembered playing video games with him late at night when Vosler suddenly said he needed to water the lawn. “He goes, ‘Yeah, Dad wants me to sprinkle the lawn,’” Capps said. “Like, dude, it’s 3 a.m. And he said something like, ‘Yeah but if I do it now it’s not going to dry up and stuff.’ I was just like wait, what? OK.” Before Vosler met Lee in 2018, Capps said, his friend didn’t seem particularly happy being alone and in his house all the time. Rizzi said the isolation was something Vosler chose, but it was also something his mother wanted. After Vosler and Lee met, Vosler loved talking about her, Capps said. The three of them were a trio from time to time, talking with each other on Discord for five or six hours in one sitting. “I think they were just two lonely souls that, you know, found something, and they just wanted to hold onto it,” Capps said. “I was just happy for him.” When Lee moved in with Vosler near the end of 2021 or early 2022, according to Capps, the decision took him by surprise. Usually when he or Vosler made decisions, they talked about it. Vosler had convinced him to leave the Air Force years ago, validated Capps’ decision to live in Wyoming for a couple years and helped him pick out the car he drives. Capps said Lee moving in was an “instantaneous” decision. “I asked him, ‘Well, what’s your dad think about it?’ And he just would not talk about it,” Capps said. The home on Eastwood Avenue East where four people were found dead on Dec. 31, 2024, following a ******** check. Photographed on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, in South Hill. A quiet life in east Pierce County Court records and newspaper clippings show Vosler’s parents worked through financial and emotional hardships to build the quiet life they had in their gated South Hill neighborhood. Before William and Eileen Vosler were married, Eileen had a previous husband she became estranged from in the late 1980s. According to an Associated Press story, the husband, Kenneth Gehring, stranded Eileen at her friend’s dairy farm in Graham one day in June 1989. The next day he returned apparently looking for her, and he shot three people to death before fatally shooting himself. The next year, William Vosler retired from the Coast Guard, according to court records in Pierce County Superior Court. He’d joined up in 1974 after attending Rogers High School. After leaving service he got a job as terminal manager for American Transport in Seattle. He later got a degree in business management. William Vosler was severely injured on the job, and it took years for him to get authorization for surgery he needed to address ruptured discs in his lower back. In the meantime, he later wrote in a sworn affidavit, he ran out of financial resources. He said he was married, had two teenage children and a baby on the way. He and Eileen filed for bankruptcy in February 1999 when they were living in Graham. Eileen Vosler grew up in Pierce County, and involvement in local churches ran in her family. Her mother, Louise Jensen, relocated to Puyallup from Oregon as a child, according to Jensen’s obituary, and Jensen was known to play worship music at churches for years. William Vosler, left, and Shane Vosler pose for a photo on the Statten Island Ferry during a visit to New York City in 2009. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe Shane Vosler and his girlfriend, Sue Bin Lee, killed Shane Vosler’s parents in their South Hill home during summer 2024. William Vosler said he obtained public assistance “out of desperation.” He then got a job, but he lost it in two weeks due to a labor strike, and he never informed public assistance that he had been working. In September 1999, he Eileen were charged with public-assistance fraud. They both eventually pleaded guilty and received suspended sentences. He had a few different jobs in the early 2000s as a manager for different moving companies. In 2006, he and Eileen again filed for bankruptcy, but their petition was denied. By then they had moved to a residence in South Hill they rented for $1,200 a month, and Shane Vosler, 13, was their only dependent. The same year, William Vosler started a logistics, operations and transportation consulting business called Vosler Consulting. William Vosler was the breadwinner in the home, according to documents filed in the bankruptcy case. Eileen made some money in 2005 doing labor for the moving company her husband worked for, but she reported having no monthly income from the past six months in February 2006. William Vosler went on to work in quality assurance, according to his LinkedIn account, and later in life he worked as a safety manager for a few different companies. ‘I knew something was very wrong’ Vosler’s father was a conservative. On Facebook in 2021, he reposted memes related to then-former President Donald Trump, videos from political commentators such as Ben Shapiro, quotes from Ronald Reagan and calls to “drain the swamp.” Compared to her boyfriend’s conservative and religious parents, Lee was very liberal. In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, she reposted videos and articles on Facebook from progressive media outlets NowThis and Salon concerning Trump’s anti-immigrant statements in his campaign and a journalist’s “invasive” questions about transgender people in an interview with actress Laverne Cox. Her political views sometimes set her up for conflict with Shane Vosler’s conservative friends, like Capps, who recalled calling Lee out on some of her views as “kind of stupid.” Rizzi said she wasn’t sure how Vosler’s father put up with Lee’s opinions. In 2023, Shane Vosler began to have health issues that led to some further friction in the household. Rizzi said Vosler started getting dizzy and out of breath if he stood or went up or down the stairs. In May that year, Vosler wrote on Discord that he had gotten a “load of tests” done at a local emergency room, but that the nurses and doctor on duty had no explanation for why his heart rate was shooting up. Vosler’s own online research led him to believe he could have POTS, a condition that, according to the Cleveland Clinic, causes a fast heart rate, dizziness and fatigue when a person transitions from lying down to standing up. According to Discord messages reviewed by The News Tribune, Vosler had another appointment scheduled in October, and he said he hoped to get referred to a specialist. In the meantime, he said, he was studying for new I.T. certifications. Rizzi said Vosler later got a wheelchair to help him get around. She had to drag that information out of him, she said, and she later found out that his parents didn’t believe his illness was real. She said Vosler tried to hide the wheelchair from his parents. “The family very much had a mentality of, like, hide everything, don’t tell,” Rizzi said. Now knowing that Vosler was later able to kill his parents, Rizzi said she questions the reality of Vosler’s condition, and she said she thought it was reasonable to say he was faking to an extent. In early 2024, Rizzi began to suspect that something was wrong in the house. Vosler wasn’t online as much, she said, and when they did hang out, he was grumpy. After the homicides came to light, Rizzi began putting together a timeline in her head of the last six months. From others who interacted with Vosler or Lee, Rizzi gathered that Lee was picking fights with Vosler’s mother. Rizzi said she thought at best, Lee wanted to stand up for Vosler when his parents would belittle him or tell him he was faking his illness, but that led to more problems. “What it would do is it’d get his mom worked up, and then his dad would have to step in,” Rizzi said. “And Sue would go back up to their room while Shane dealt with the fallout.” Capps also began to notice changes with Vosler. About halfway through last year, Vosler started taking a long time to return his messages, and, when he did, it was only one-sentence replies. Capps said he figured Vosler was just starting to move on in life. Later Vosler stopped responding at all. In August, Rizzi said she messaged Lee to ask how their board-game development was coming along and how Vosler’s Minecraft world was going. Lee told her the board game was on pause, and Vosler hadn’t played Minecraft in a while. That sent off alarm bells. “I knew something was very wrong then because he doesn’t just give up his passions and his obsessions,” Rizzi said. “And so I was frightened.” The holidays came and went, and Vosler didn’t respond to Rizzi’s messages. After he didn’t reply to a “Merry Christmas,” Rizzi opened one of Lee’s online profiles Dec. 29 and found a link to a Wordpress blog with posts dated in November. Rizzi recognized it as a suicide note and contacted law enforcement. “I honestly was just trying to get eyes on my friend,” Rizzi said. “I’ve made suicide calls for friends before. I don’t mess around with it. It’s mostly just like if I’m wrong then my friend is angry at me. And most law enforcement is happy to go knock on a door and have somebody not be dead.” Source link #longdistance #gaming #romance #ended #violent #deaths #Pierce #County #home Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

The victims were identified as siblings Laura Morales, 37, and Hugo Iván Morales, 35, of El Paso, Texas, by their mother to Telemundo. The mother was in Mexico City on Wednesday to identify her children’s bodies. Mexico City’s Office of Citizen Safety officers responded to a report of an unconscious person in an apartment in the Centro neighborhood, in the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, authorities said Tuesday. Officers interviewed a 61-year-old woman who said the pair, who had “virtual credentials” saying they were from Texas, had rented one of the apartments in the building, police said. She knocked on their door multiple times to notify them of a repair for a leak in the water meter, but received no response. Eventually she decided to let herself into the apartment and upon entering, she found them unconscious and called police. The Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City is investigating the deaths. The office said in a statement Wednesday it is awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause. A family member raising funds for their ******** expenses said the siblings died due to carbon monoxide intoxication. An Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement that the pair’s deaths were a “terrible tragedy,” and extended the company’s thoughts to their loved ones. “Our priority right now is supporting those impacted as the authorities investigate what happened, and we stand ready to assist however we can,” the statement said. Marco Rubio Watching Trump’s Zelensky Meltdown Sparks Misery Memes Marco Rubio Watching Trump’s Zelensky Meltdown Sparks Misery Memes Social media users roasted Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s sour look as he watched President Donald Trump lose it on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in real time on Friday. “If Marco Rubio wants to save what’s left of his soul and his honor, he’d resign immediately,” wrote one X commentator. Another X user added of his facial expression, “Marco Rubio regretting he took the job.” Social media users took aim at Rubio as a “coward” and “one of the saddest people in the history of this f—ing world” for doing nothing as Trump’s unsuccessful meeting with Zelensky went viral. “How we doin bud?” Slate politics editor Jim Newell asked Rubio in a post that sparked comedic memes about how ********** the former Florida senator must be. “No one has wanted to be severed more than Marco Rubio in this job,” wrote Pod Save America host Jon Favreau, referencing the Apple+ show, Severance. A.J. Catoline, an Emmy-winning editor on Ted Lasso, added, “Go lick Putin’s boot, Marco,” then added a Severance meme of his own. Other shots at Rubio took a more serious tone over how the botched meeting could stall putting an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. “Marco Rubio looks absolutely disgusted. He knows deep down Zelensky is the one we should be defending but he sold his soul to MAGA,” wrote an X commentator about the moment. Another added, “You literally could do a daily picture of Marco Rubio swimming in the misery of knowing he gave away a longterm Senate job only to get none of the prestige of being SoS and all the responsibility for letting kids and Ukraine die.” Despite his visual disdain, Rubio put on a metaphorical brave face after the meeting in a tweet praising Trump for “putting America first.” “Thank you @POTUS for standing up for America in a way that no President has ever had the courage to do before. Thank you for putting America First. America is with you!,” he wrote on X. Teddy surprised with gift made from thousands of tubs he saved from landfill Teddy surprised with gift made from thousands of tubs he saved from landfill Jamie MorrisReporting fromSouthampton & Exeter Teddy was surprised to arrive at school and find a special bench made of his recycled plastic tubs A little boy, who has earned the nickname “Sweet Tub Teddy” after saving thousands of confectionery tubs from landfill, has been gifted a bench made from his recycled plastic tubs. The six-year-old from Netley, Hampshire, collected more than 2,500 tubs through the Tub2Pub scheme to make outdoor furniture. Arriving at school on Thursday, he was surprised to find the “buddy bench” in the playground. “Everyone can make a difference, it doesn’t matter how small you are,” said Teddy, as the bench was unveiled. A plaque on the purple seat reads: “With thanks to Teddy for your outstanding efforts contributing to Tub2Pub 2025 from Greene King, co-cre8, DCW Polymers and Macmillan ******* Support.” Teddy, whose hero is David Attenborough, previously told the BBC he was “angry” when he found out that the containers could not be recycled in his family’s normal recycling bin. Some authorities in the *** have the capacity to recycle the tubs via kerbside collection but Hampshire currently does not. Teddy set about collecting the tubs from people’s houses and bins and wrote a letter to his school, which in turn wrote to parents. With help from his mum Laura, he put up posters at local businesses and got his grandad to go to the local tip to ask them to save any tubs that people had binned. A post from Teddy on Facebook, in which he described himself as an “eco warrior on a mission” and telling of how “hundreds of thousands of [tubs] go to landfill or the ocean”, helped gather further momentum. ‘Amazing efforts’ Georgia Harlow, from Co-cre8, said Teddy “epitomises the willingness of the public to engage with recycling”, adding that he is a “fantastic example of what can be achieved”. She said: “The bench we are donating to Teddy’s school is not only to show our appreciation for his amazing efforts but also to demonstrate how he has helped to turn used plastic tubs that may have otherwise been discarded as general waste, into a new, useful product that will be used at the school for many years to come.” The day before, Teddy visited a recycling facility to learn how they use the plastic collected through the scheme to make outdoor furniture. Listen to Teddy as he tells you about his day out at a recycling centre You know what they say every day is a learning day – and at the DCW Polymers warehouse in Exeter, although Teddy wasn’t at school, he was learning nonetheless. Teddy helped staff to load sweet tubs on to a conveyor, which sent them to be shredded. The shredded material is then mixed with UV additives to avoid being bleached by sunlight. It is then heated up and pushed into a mould before being cut into planks and sent upstairs to be made into furniture. As part of the scheme, Teddy’s tubs were first taken to the Shamblehurst Barn pub before being moved to a plastic reprocessing centre. The pub’s general manager Kieron O’Donnell said: “Huge congratulations to Teddy on collecting over 2,500 tubs for Greene King’s Tub2Pub campaign this year. “We are all so proud of his amazing efforts and enjoyed hosting a celebratory meal for Teddy and his family. “It is brilliant that he cares so much about the environment and good to see how the tubs saved from landfill have been recycled into this bench for the school. “Well done Teddy, from everyone at Greene King!” Source link #Teddy #surprised #gift #thousands #tubs #saved #landfill Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

DOJ spokesperson resigns, citing ‘toxic work environment’
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
DOJ spokesperson resigns, citing ‘toxic work environment’ DOJ spokesperson resigns, citing ‘toxic work environment’ Joshua Stueve, a top spokesperson for the Department of Justice (DOJ), has resigned, citing a “toxic work environment” in his letter to leadership. “Simply put, I cannot continue to serve in such a hostile and toxic work environment, one where leadership at the highest levels makes clear we are not welcomed or valued, much less trusted to do our jobs,” wrote Stueve, who is not a political appointee and has served in administrations run by both parties. Stueve’s resignation is the latest in federal resignations and firings since the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began examining various agencies to cut spending. DOGE, the brainchild of Elon Musk, has won unprecedented access to internal systems of the federal government since Jan. 20. It has worked to dismantle parts of the government while pushing federal workers to resign. Musk himself has repeatedly belittled federal workers, most recently in a Cabinet meeting earlier this week. In his letter, Stueve said he had served administrations of both parties. Stueve has been a senior communications advisor for the DOJ since Jan. 2021. “To be clear, the outcome of the most recent general election did not influence my decision. In fact, it has been an honor to serve this department under multiple administrations led by both Republicans and Democrats, each of whom have previously treated career staff with respect and dignity,” Stueve said in the letter, obtained by The Hill. He said it was “heartbreaking” to see that “basic decency” was gone at the Department of Justice. Attorney General Pam Bondi was sworn in to lead the DOJ earlier this month. Stueve wished his former colleagues the best and said they were “true patriots” of the country. His resignation comes as others at the DOJ have resigned or been fired within the first few weeks of the Trump administration. Some of the DOJ and FBI’s top career officials have been targeted, including those who worked on Trump’s criminal prosecutions. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Now that ChatGPT Voice Mode is free, is it even worth paying for ChatGPT Plus anymore? Now that ChatGPT Voice Mode is free, is it even worth paying for ChatGPT Plus anymore? When OpenAI first introduced ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, I was intrigued by the idea that this might be the template for a voice assistant capable of all the Star Trek-style feats that Amazon and Google had promised a decade ago. A fluid, back-and-forth conversation with an AI that didn’t sound like you were talking to a robot stuck in 2014, capable of everything ChatGPT does, seemed ideal. It was a major reason I continued paying $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus. It’s worth taking a moment to appreciate what ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode can do, albeit imperfectly. You can engage in a real-time conversation with ChatGPT, one with the rhythm and even some of the emotions inherent in a human voice. You can interrupt the AI mid-sentence, and it won’t forget what you were discussing. It generally mimics human listening and response behavior, even to the point of not waiting for you to finish speaking; it can interrupt you right back. OpenAI recently decided to share the sound of ChatGPT with a version of Voice Mode that doesn’t require a subscription fee. That raises an obvious question: If ChatGPT’s Voice Mode is now free, is it even worth paying for ChatGPT Plus anymore? Now, before you hit the cancel button, you should know the free version is not identical to what paying users get. OpenAI has made sure there’s still an incentive to upgrade. First, the free tier is powered by GPT-4o mini, a smaller, slightly less powerful version of the GPT-4o model ChatGPT Plus users talk to. That means free-tier responses might be a little less nuanced and a bit more generic. The biggest difference, though, is the daily limit. Free users only get Voice Mode for a limited time each day before they’re cut off, while Plus subscribers can keep chatting five times as long. Another major perk for Plus users is access to richer features like video and screen sharing within Voice Mode. While the free version is great for basic conversations, Plus users get a more immersive experience that lets ChatGPT provide visual explanations, making it more useful for things like troubleshooting, learning new skills, or getting walkthroughs on complex topics. Sound Planning I wanted to evaluate the differences between ChatGPT’s free and Plus versions of Advanced Voice Mode. I conducted three distinct tests to see how each performed: a casual multi-turn conversation, a tongue twister challenge, and a request for entertainment recommendations. These tests aimed to assess both versions’ responsiveness, coherence, and depth of interaction. For the casual conversation, I started by saying, “Hey ChatGPT, how’s your day going?” I then asked the AI for a hobby suggestion and asked how to get into those hobbies. Both AI models responded immediately and in a similarly casual way. They each offered a couple of ideas for hobbies, and both suggested photography as an option. The free version’s second suggestion was painting, while in ChatGPT Plus, the other suggestion was to try something more active, like hiking. Asking about how to start painting led to a somewhat generic list of painting supplies, and the same for hiking gear. Oddly, they both had the same suggestion for a camera to get if I wanted to try photography: the Canon EOS Rebel T7. I then decided to test the listening ability of the models with a classic tongue twister by saying: “Alright, ChatGPT, let’s test your listening skills. Can you repeat this back to me? Peter Piper picked a ***** of pickled peppers. A ***** of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a ***** of pickled peppers, where’s the ***** of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?” There was zero difference in the accuracy of the response or the speed. Both almost immediately said it back exactly right. For the final test, I chose something that involved a search and judgment. I asked about a movie to watch and a restaurant to try in my town this weekend. They each paused for a couple of seconds before answering. Both suggested seeing the new Captain America movie, though the free version offered the new Paddington movie as an alternative. The Plus model suggested Mufasa instead. They were perfectly in sync in recommending the nearby AMC theatre, though, and both pointed to the Hudson House restaurant in my town as the place to eat. Pay for more I conversed with both models for a while longer and noted a lot of overlap, if not outright repetition, between them. But, as I mentioned before, I was soon told I had maxed out my time with the free Voice Mode, whereas I went nearly twice as long with the Plus version before choosing to stop, with no indication I was close to reaching my time limit. Both versions of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode were helpful, accurate, and equally good at mimicking human speech in all three tests. While the GPT-4o model is undoubtedly better and more powerful than GPT-4o mini, you’d have to be a real power user to detect that. If you’re a casual user who wants to mess around with AI voice chat for a few minutes each day, the free version is honestly pretty great. It’s smooth, responsive, and easy to use. You’d need to really rely on using it a lot to make Voice Mode the sole reason to pay for ChatGPT Plus. That said, there’s a lot more to the subscription than just the better AI model for voice. I’ve written about many of the ways I employ ChatGPT, and ChatGPT Plus means I have access to better models and extra features for everything from planning dinner ideas, entertaining children, keeping my New Year’s Resolutions, and performing many other tasks. That includes getting access to the Tasks feature for ChatGPT, which lets you schedule AI missions in the future. So, is it still worth paying for? If you’re just here for casual AI chats, maybe not. But if you’re using ChatGPT in other ways, that $20 a month still buys you a noticeably better experience. And if you’ve already been paying for ChatGPT Plus, I’d say the extension of Voice Mode to the free tier is not nearly enough of a reason to cancel. Of course, if OpenAI more than doubles the price, I may reconsider. What’s behind today’s boycott of major retailers like Amazon and Walmart What’s behind today’s boycott of major retailers like Amazon and Walmart A grassroots organization is calling on Americans to participate Friday in what it’s calling the “Feb. 28 economic blackout” by refraining from buying goods from major retailers for 24 hours. The nationwide protest comes amid rising prices on everything from gas to groceries — including, notably, eggs — and is similar to social media-fueled economic efforts that have cropped up online in recent months, including the “No Buy 2025” challenge against overconsumption. Who’s behind the Feb. 28 blackout? The Feb. 28 boycott is an initiative by the People’s Union USA, a self-described “grassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability and corporate reform.” Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The group, founded by John Schwarz, says it is not affiliated with any political party. According to the organization’s website, its goal is “to unite Americans against the corruption and greed that has kept us struggling for decades.” The daylong boycott has been promoted online by several celebrities, including John Leguizamo, Stephen King and Bette Midler. What’s the goal of the boycott? “For our entire lives, they have told us we have no choice, that this is just how things are, that we have to accept these insane prices, the corporate greed, the billionaire tax breaks, all while we struggle just to get by,” Schwarz said in a recent Instagram video. “For one day, we are going to finally turn the tables.”‘ According to Schwarz, the idea is to halt all purchases from big corporations, both in store and online, from 12 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. “No Amazon, no Walmart, no fast food, no gas,” he said. “Not a single unnecessary dollar spent.” What about medicine or emergency supplies? On its website, the group is urging consumers to not spend money on “non-essential” items. For essential purchases like food, medicine, or emergency supplies, Schwarz is encouraging participants to buy them from a local small business rather than a big-box retailer. “Do not go out and shop at any big, major store,” Schwarz said in the video. “If you have to, go to the local pizza place, the small local boutique.” Blackout targets all major retailers Amazon packages on a conveyor belt. (Ross D. Franklin/AP/File) Some supporters of the blackout have suggested boycotting specific corporations that have ended their diversity, equity and inclusion programs following President Trump’s executive order targeting DEI initiatives. But while the People’s Union calls the abandonment of DEI programs “regressive and unacceptable,” the Feb. 28 boycott is aimed at all major retailers, regardless of their stance on DEI. “If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message,” the organization said on its website. In a follow-up video posted on the eve of the planned blackout, Schwarz told his Instagram followers not to be discouraged if they see people shopping on Friday. “Remember: There are 340 million people in America, and not all of them will stand with us,” he said. “But millions will.” What happens after Feb. 28? Schwarz told USA Today earlier this month that he hopes to boycott other businesses “that are really the biggest offenders within the system.” The People’s Union is already planning weeklong blackouts aimed at specific retailers, including Amazon, Target and Walmart. The first, targeting Amazon, is scheduled to begin March 7. Source link #Whats #todays #boycott #major #retailers #Amazon #Walmart Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

New stove that plugs into a normal wall outlet could be major gain for health and the climate New stove that plugs into a normal wall outlet could be major gain for health and the climate NEW YORK (AP) — For years, Ed Yaker, treasurer of a New York City co-op with nearly 1,500 units, and fellow board members have dealt with gas leaks. It can mean the gas at an entire building is shut off, leaving residents unable to use a stove for months until expensive repairs are made to gas lines. So Yaker was all in when he learned of a California startup called Copper that was manufacturing an electric stove and oven that could simply be plugged into a regular outlet. The sleek, standard four-burner electric induction stove runs on 120 volts, meaning there is no need to pay a licensed electrician thousands of dollars to rewire to 240 volts, which many electric stoves require. “In terms of, ‘Is this the way to go?’ It’s a no brainer,” Yaker said, demonstrating a quart of water that boiled in about two minutes. His apartment is full of books, many on energy and climate change, and the energy efficiency was a motivation, too. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Then there are the health benefits of cooking with electricity. Gas stoves, which 47 million Americans use, release pollutants like nitrogen dioxide that has been linked to asthma and *******-causing benzene. “You wouldn’t stand over the tailpipe of a car breathing in the exhaust from that car. And yet nearly 50 million households stand over a gas stove, breathing the same pollutants in their homes,” said Rob Jackson, an environmental scientist at Stanford University and lead author on a study on pollution from gas cooking. “I had a gas stove until I started this line of research. Watching pollutant levels rise almost immediately every time I turned a burner on, or my oven on, was enough to get me to switch” to an electric stove, he said. Induction stoves are also a way to address the considerable amount of climate change that comes from buildings — emissions from cooking, heating and cooling living spaces and hot water. In the case of gas stoves, about half of the flame’s heat escapes into the room. Electric stoves by comparison can be up to 80% efficient. Of those, induction stoves come out on top with up to 90% efficiency in part because they only heat where the surface contacts the pot. Just the presence of a gas stove in a home contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, even when it’s not turned on. Jackson’s team found gas stoves bleed methane — the main constituent of natural gas — when they’re off, from loose fittings and at connections between the stove and wall. The climate impact of leaky stoves in U.S. homes was estimated to be comparable to carbon emissions from 500,000 gasoline-powered cars. The stove contains a battery that is smart, meaning it can charge up when electrical rates are low, allowing people to cook without incurring peak-rate electrical charges. The new Copper stoves are not cheap. Early adopters are relying on government incentives to defray the cost. When Yaker, who worked as a teacher and was a saver, bought his, it was $6,000 and a federal tax credit for clean energy appliances brought that down to $4,200. The manufacturer now has an agreement with the New York City Housing Authority to buy 10,000 stoves at a maximum price of $3,200 each, set to arrive in 2026. Eden Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing developer, retrofitted a 32-apartment building in Martinez, California with Copper stoves using state and local programs, and hopes to purchase more. “It’s pretty cool, it looks nice and it’s easy to clean,” said Jolene Cardoza, about the new appliance. Her adult daughter’s asthma was irritated by her old gas stove when she would come over to bake and she’s happy the Copper doesn’t release pollutants. Other tenants found the transition to induction cooking more bumpy. “I don’t really like the way it cooks my food in the oven,” said Monica Moore, who notices a difference in the texture of her cornbread. She is impressed with how quickly water boils, but misses cooking with a flame and said it was a hassle to switch out her pans with ones that are compatible with induction stoves. For Jackson, though, the change is important. “I think shutting the gas off to our homes and electrifying our homes is one of the best things that we can control individually to reduce our personal greenhouse gas emissions. I think of cars and homes as the two places to start for reducing our greenhouse gas footprint,” said Jackson. ___ The Associated Press’ climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Depressed bread loaf marks 25 years as a TV cult hero Depressed bread loaf marks 25 years as a TV cult hero Forget SpongeBob SquarePants, Sesame Street and the sourdough starter craze: a depressed ******* loaf of bread named Bernd das Brot is celebrating his 25th anniversary as the reluctant star of a children’s television program that accidentally became equally popular with adults. A cult classic in Germany, Bernd das Brot (Bernd the Bread) is a puppet renowned for his deep, gloomy voice, his perpetual pessimism and his signature expression, “Mist!” (Think “crap!” in English). Played and voiced by puppeteer Jörg Teichgraeber, Bernd is a television presenter who wants nothing to do with TV and can’t wait to go home to stare at the wallpaper. This year, his friends – a sheep and a flower bush – are urging him to become a bread influencer. Born as a sketch on the back of a napkin in a pizzeria, creator Tommy Krappweis drew Bernd’s infamous grimace after co-creator Norman Cöster’s face. The duo had been asked to come up with mascots for KiKA, a ******* children’s public television channel. Comic artist Georg Graf von Westphalen designed Bernd as a pullman loaf – white bread typically sliced for sandwiches – with short arms and a permanent scowl. Bernd channels ******* stereotypes with his grumpy disposition, penchant for complaining and dry sense of humour and irony. Bernd’s first episode aired on KiKA in 2000 alongside his more-optimistic pals, Chili the Sheep and Briegel the Bush. Because KiKA is a children’s channel, there was typically dead air from 9pm to 6am. On January 1, 2003, the network put Bernd’s short episodes into the night loop for the first time. The move brought an adult audience – often those sitting at home and smoking pot, or returning after a long night of partying – into Bernd’s world, cementing his popularity as a ******* cult classic. In 2004, Bernd won the Adolf Grimme Prize – the ******* television equivalent of an Emmy – because the jury said he represents “the right to be in a bad mood”. “Bernd shows you that you are less vulnerable with humor and self-irony. And perhaps the most important point is: It’s totally okay if you don’t feel well sometimes. That’s completely fine,” Krappweis, Bernd’s creator, said in a KiKA Q&A about Bernd’s anniversary. Bernd is depressed for a multitude of reasons, including his failed attempt to be the mascot for a bakery’s advertising campaign (that’s how he ended up as a TV presenter, as a last resort). But it’s in Episode 85 that we finally learn about Bernd’s broken heart. “A long, long time ago I fell in love with a beautiful, slim baguette. She was so incredibly charming and funny,” Bernd tells Chili and Briegel. “But unfortunately it was in vain. “She only had eyes for this run-of-the-mill multigrain bread with its 10 types of grain. It was so depressing.” Despite Bernd’s best efforts – one of his catchphrases is “I would like to leave this show” – the episodes have never become stale. He sings, he dances, he’s been to space. He’s the star of merchandise, a video game and headlines like Give Us Our Daily Bernd. He was even kidnapped! In 2009, his two-metre tall statue was stolen from his traditional place outside the town hall in Erfurt, where KiKA is based. A claim of responsibility surfaced on YouTube, by sympathisers of a group of demonstrators who were protesting a company that had produced cremation ovens for the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz. The demonstrators, however, denied involvement in Bernd’s kidnapping and the video was removed from the internet. Bernd was held hostage for nearly two weeks before being discovered unharmed in an abandoned barracks. KiKA is honouring Bernd’s 25th anniversary – despite his complaints – with new episodes, an update to his hit song and online activities for kids and adults alike. The celebrations begin now, as Bernd’s birthday is February 29. The latest series will premiere in September as Bernd, Chili and Briegel launch the social media channel Better with Bernd in their efforts to make him into a bread influencer. The trio will present inventions to make school, and life, easier for viewers but naturally their concoctions backfire. Bernd instead becomes a defluencer – and an involuntary trendsetter. Spring Hill College alumna pens open letter to school after majors dropped from curriculum Spring Hill College alumna pens open letter to school after majors dropped from curriculum MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Spring Hill College alumna has penned a letter to the school in light of some SHC majors being dropped from the curriculum. School officials said in an email to students and faculty the following majors have been dropped: Chemistry, Biochemistry, History, Philosophy, Secondary Education, and the Studio Art major and minor. Vanity Fair’s Monroeville center to close, impacting 165 jobs “It’s a matter of if there is not a demand, students are shifting their focus, so we need to be nimble and to shift as well,” SHC President Mary Van Brunt said. The school is offering students the ability to complete their current major if they choose. Otherwise, school officials said they’ll help students make an easy transition to a new major. Van Brunt told News 5 Wednesday the school needed to save about 5% of its budget. “Most small faith-based colleges have financial challenges, and we are no different from having financial challenges,” Van Brunt said. As a result, faculty positions at SHC have been reduced, and faculty members have already been personally notified. Adele Lemm graduated from Spring Hill College in 2018. She expressed her “profound disappointment” in her open letter to the school. Lemm published “A Lament for the Loss of Studio Art and Other Disciplines at Spring Hill College: An Open Letter to the Administration of Spring Hill College” on Wednesday. Lemm discussed her disappointment for the school’s removal of the Studio Art degree. “Let us be clear: you are removing a career path that, still today, the school boasts as ‘the right place to land’ to help secure future success in art careers, betraying the trust of students who chose Spring Hill College for its supposed commitment to a comprehensive arts education,” she said. “Spring Hill College states that the arts ‘help us better understand and experience what it is to be fully human and alive,’” Lemm continued. “By removing Studio Art, you are then actively diminishing the opportunities for students to explore and express what it means to be human, in your own words.” Lemm also highlighted the lack of communication from the school to its alumni when it comes to making such decisions. She used the word “alarming” when discussing the elimination of Liberal Arts majors as well as Chemistry, Biochemistry, History and Secondary Education. Pryor Middle School student claims to have gun, throws firecracker in hallway: OCSO “This wholesale dismantling of diverse academic disciplines is alarming, especially for a Liberal Arts College….,” she said. “This is not a pragmatic decision; it is a cultural and intellectual disservice for students, the City of Mobile, and Spring Hill College itself,” Lemm closed her open letter. “Spring Hill College will lose part of its soul by the absence of Studio Art, Philosophy, and History, along with other discontinued disciplines, and your claims about the value of a well-rounded education are now tarnished.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
