Nvidia and Super Micro Computer stock plunge as a new probe over China raises concerns about tighter scrutiny

Nvidia (NVDA), Super Micro Computer (SMCI), and Dell (DELL) shares plunged Monday after Singapore said it’s investigating whether servers shipped to Malaysia containing chips barred from China ended up in the mainland.
Police in the city-state arrested several people for their alleged roles in procuring and shipping Nvidia chips in violation of American sanctions, Bloomberg reports. The U.S. has been investigating whether ******** AI startup DeepSeek had circumvented curbs that way, it said earlier.
Singapore is seeking further information from Malaysia and the U.S. to determine the final destination of the Dell and Super Micro Computer servers, Law Minister K Shanmugam told reporters on Monday. The purchasers had misled suppliers about the ultimate destination of the equipment, he said.
The investigation risks increasing U.S. scrutiny of equipment exports by the American companies, a potential drag on sales growth. The news also comes amid investor caution ahead of the scheduled implementation of higher U.S. tariffs on goods from China, Mexico and Canada.
Nvidia stock closed down 8.7% on. Monday. Super Micro shares fell 13%, and Dell slipped 7%.
Intel (INTC) stock closed down 4.2%, giving giving up a gain earlier in the day driven by a report that its faltering chip manufacturing business could get a boost from its rivals.
Nvidia and Broadcom (AVGO) are testing chip manufacturing with Intel on its most advanced 18A process for cutting-edge chips, such as those for AI, Reuters reports. Broadcom, due to report earnings on Thursday, dropped more than 6%.
The U.S.-traded shares of top chip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSM) (TSMC) fell 4.2%.

Nvidia shares fall 9% on tariff fears

Nvidia shares fell nearly 9% on Monday after President Donald Trump confirmed that tariffs from Canada and Mexico will go into effect on Tuesday.
The chipmaker’s shares retreated on a bad day for the market. The Dow, of which Nvidia is a component, tumbled 800 points, or 1.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite slid more than 3%.
Nvidia shares are now trading at the same price they were in September, before the U.S. presidential election. The company, having shed its $3 trillion market cap, is worth $2.79 trillion after Monday’s slide knocked another $265 billion off Nvidia’s valuation.
Nvidia is down over 13% since Wednesday, when the company reported earnings that topped analysts’ estimates across the board. The company’s revenue jumped 78% from a year earlier to $39.33 billion.
During Nvidia’s earnings report, analysts asked about the company’s response to U.S. tariffs.
“Tariffs at this point, it’s an unknown until we understand further what the U.S. government’s plan is,” Nvidia finance chief Colette Kress told investors.
Nvidia’s chips are mostly made in Taiwan, but some of its sophisticated systems and full computers surrounding the chips are manufactured in other regions, including Mexico and the U.S. They could be affected by Trump’s 25% duties on imports from Mexico and Canada that go into effect Tuesday.
Separately, Nvidia was scrutinized on Monday for its exports to Singapore, which some analysts see as a waypoint to ship the company’s chips to China and bypass the U.S. export controls. Late last week, Singapore officials detained three people for lying about where U.S.-manufactured servers would end up.
Nvidia officials did say that they would manufacture chips in the new $100 billion expansion of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing facilities in the United States that was announced by Trump on Monday.
Last week, investors were eager to hear what the company’s outlook was for continued AI growth from a handful of massive cloud companies, which comprise about half of Nvidia’s data center revenue. CEO Jensen Huang said that the company had ironed out issues with its latest chips, Blackwell.
“We’re going to have a good quarter next quarter,” Huang told CNBC last week. “And we’ve got a fairly good pipeline of demand for Blackwell.”

Trump condemns Zelensky remarks that war end is ‘far away’
Trump condemns Zelensky remarks that war end is ‘far away’
Reuters
A statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying a deal to end the war with Russia was “very far away” has drawn a furious response by Donald Trump.
“America will not put up with it for much longer,” the US president said in a social media post, before accusing Zelensky of not wanting peace.
A summit of mostly European leaders in London on Sunday agreed a four-point plan to guarantee Ukraine’s defence in the event of a peace deal with Russia.
“Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?” Trump said, apparently referring to the summit held two days after his fiery clash with Zelensky at the Oval Office.
The summit – hosted by *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer – was intended as a show of support for Ukraine and an attempt to reduce differences between Western countries over Ukraine.
Britain and France said they were working on a European-led solution to the conflict.
After the meeting, Zelensky said a deal to end the war between Ukraine and Russia was “still very, very far away”.
He added that he expected the US to continue backing Ukraine despite his own fraught relations with Trump.
“I believe that Ukraine has a strong enough partnership with the United States of America,” Zelensky said late on Sunday.
But on Monday, Trump responded by reiterating his view that Zelensky stood in the way of peace negotiations.
“This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelensky, and America will not put up with it for much longer! It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing,” he wrote on his Truth Social media network.
During a news briefing later in Monday, Trump reiterated his view that Zelensky “should be more appreciative” for the aid he has received from the US in the three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
During the confrontation in front of cameras at the White House, both Trump of US Vice-President JD Vance expressed anger by what they perceived as Zelensky’s lack of gratitude.
“Just say thank you,” Vance demanded at one point.
During the extraordinary clash at the Oval Office, Trump accused Zelensly of “gambling with World War Three”
The angry exchange meant that a deal that would give the US access to Ukraine’s deposits of rare earth minerals was left unsigned.
In his news conference on Monday, Trump said he did not believe the agreement was dead.
He added that he would provide an update on the minerals deal late on Tuesday.
After the London summit, the *** and France suggested a European “coalition of the willing” to defend Ukraine – but details were scarce.
Sir Keir said that the idea of sending troops to Ukraine – which would include boots on the ground and planes in the air – had the backing of several parties, but he was careful to leave it to individual countries to discuss the matter internally.
Scandinavian countries have signalled they were open to the idea if it had the backing of the US.

Social Security plans to cut about 7,000 workers. That may affect benefits
Social Security plans to cut about 7,000 workers. That may affect benefits

The Social Security Administration plans to shed 7,000 employees as the Trump administration looks for ways to cut federal spending.
The agency on Friday confirmed the figure — which will bring its total staff down to 50,000 from 57,000.
Previous reports that the Social Security Administration planned for a 50% reduction to its headcount are “false,” the agency said.
Nevertheless, the aim of 7,000 job cuts has prompted concerns about the agency’s ability to continue to provide services, particularly benefit payments, to tens of millions of older Americans when its staff is already at a 50-year low.
“It’s going to extend the amount of time that it takes for them to have their claim processed,” said Greg Senden, a paralegal analyst who has worked at the Social Security Administration for 27 years.
“It’s going to extend the amount of time that they have to wait to get benefits,” said Senden, who also helps the American Federation of Government Employees oversee Social Security employees in six central states.
Officials at the White House and the Social Security Administration were not available for comment at press time.
More from Personal Finance: Trump, DOGE job cuts may be biggest in history Funding freeze stymies Biden-era consumer energy rebates Trump, Musk float idea of $5,000 ‘DOGE dividend’ checks
The Social Security Administration on Friday said it anticipates “much of” the staff reductions needed to reach its target will come from resignations, retirement and offers for Voluntary Separation Incentive Payments, or VSIP.
More reductions could come from “reduction-in-force actions that could include abolishment of organizations and positions” or reassignments to other positions, the agency said. Federal agencies must submit their reduction-in-force plans by March 13 to the Office of Personnel Management for approval.
Cuts may affect benefit payments, experts say
Former Social Security Administration Commissioner Martin O’Malley last week told CNBC.com that the continuity of benefit payments could be at risk for the first time in the program’s history.
“Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits,” O’Malley said. “I believe you will see that within the next 30 to 90 days.”
Other experts say the changes could affect benefits, though it remains to be seen exactly how.
“It’s unclear to me whether the staff cuts are more likely to result in an interruption of benefits, or an increase in improper payments,” said Charles Blahous, senior research strategist at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and a former public trustee for Social Security and Medicare.
Improper payments happen when the agency either overpays or underpays benefits due to inaccurate information.
With fewer staff, the Social Security Administration will have to choose between making sure all claims are processed, which may lead to more improper payments, or avoiding those errors, which could lead to processing delays, Blahous said.
Disability benefits, which require more agency staff attention both to process initial claims and to continue to verify beneficiaries are eligible, may be more susceptible to errors compared to retirement benefits, he added.
Cuts may have minimal impact on trust funds
Under the Trump administration, Social Security also plans to consolidate its geographic footprint to four regions down from 10 regional offices, the agency said on Friday.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how much savings the overall reforms will generate.
The Social Security Administration’s funding for administrative costs comes out of its trust funds, which are also used to pay benefits. Based on current projections, the trust funds will be depleted in the next decade and Social Security will not be able to pay full benefits at that time, unless Congress acts sooner.
The efforts to cut costs at the Social Security Administration would likely only help the trust fund solvency “in some miniscule way,” said Andrew Biggs, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and former principal deputy commissioner of the Social Security Administration.
What President Donald Trump is likely looking to do broadly is reset the baseline on government spending and employment, he said.
“I’m not disagreeing with the idea that the agency could be more efficient,” Biggs said. “I just wonder whether you can come up with that by cutting the positions first and figuring out how to have the efficiencies later.”

Rare Banksy owned by blink-182 rocker up for auction
Rare Banksy owned by blink-182 rocker up for auction
A rare Banksy artwork, hand-painted by the elusive street artist and owned by US musician Mark Hoppus, is heading to auction with a price estimate of up to $US6.35 million.
Crude Oil (Vettriano) is Banksy’s re-imagining of the 1992 painting The Singing Butler by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano, whose death was announced on Monday.
It depicts Vettriano’s butler serenading a dancing couple on a beach, with Banksy’ addition of a sinking oil liner and two figures in hazmat suits moving a barrel of toxic waste in the background.
The painting, bought by the co-founder of pop-punk band blink-182 Hoppus and his wife Skye in 2011, is being offered at Sotheby’s London Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction, with an estimate of $US3.81 million to $US6.35 million ($A6.11 million to $A10.18 million).
“It was first exhibited in (Banksy’s) landmark exhibition in Notting Hill in 2005, which really propelled him into the public sphere,” Mackie Hayden-Cook, specialist, contemporary art at Sotheby’s, told Reuters.
“It’s rare for a work of this quality to come to market, and this one really has all the best ingredients. A fabulous owner, it’s hand-painted, impeccable exhibition history, and its subject is more urgent now than ever before.”
Speaking before news of Vettriano’s death, she linked Banksy’s decision to re-imagine his work to the parallels between the two artists at the time.
“Like Banksy, you have a really, really popular artist that is loved by the masses and appreciated by many. But for whatever reason, he was snubbed by the art world,” Hayden-Cook said.
Hoppus said part of the ***** proceeds would go to medical charities and the California Fire Foundation, following the Los Angeles wildfires. He and his wife also intend to buy new art.
“Coming up in punk rock, it was always the ethos that if your band got any success, you brought your friends up with you,” he told Reuters on Sunday.
“So with this art *****, I hope to take some of the money and put it back into the art community with up-and-coming artists that we’re inspired by and just continue that … I want to be a punk rock Medici.”

TSMC and Trump announce $100 billion investment in the US, including three fabs
TSMC and Trump announce $100 billion investment in the US, including three fabs
At a news announcement at the White House today, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei stood next to President Donalt Trump as he announced that TSMC will invest $100 billion in the United States. The new operations will primarily be in Arizona.
“The most powerful AI chips in the world will be made right here in America,” Trump said. This new pledge is on top of the already existing $65 billion investment that the company has made in its existing fabs that are already putting out 4nm chips.
Trump said that the investment will go towards building three fabs, two packaging facilities, and a research and development center. Trump suggested there will be more than 20,000 jobs in and around the Arizona facilities, while TSMC’s press release says it will “support 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years and create tens of thousands of high-paying, high-tech jobs in advanced chip manufacturing and R&D.”
No mention was made of what nodes TSMC will be making chips on, nor how much capacity it will have. Apple, AMD, Nvidia, and Qualcomm were mentioned as potential customers.
Trump highlighted the matter of economic and national security for the United States to have advanced chips manufactured within its borders.
President Donald Trump makes an investment announcement — 3/3/2025 – YouTube
Watch On
Although the CHIPS and Science Act helped jumpstart TSMC’s move to the U.S. during the Biden administration, commerce secretary Howard Lutnick posited that it’s Trump’s tariffs that made TSMC move to the U.S.
This move will allow TSMC to diversify its production away from Taiwan, especially as the island country is often beset by natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons. More than that, there is also geopolitical tensions with China. Fabs in the U.S. will also bring TSMC closer to its customers, and the production capacity that these news factories will deliver may already already contracted out to the companies Wei mentioned.
Not everyone will react positively to this news. Intel, which is already in deep financial trouble in the latter half of 2024, has a major competitor making chips in America with a promise of further investment. And while we don’t know yet if TSMC will manufacture its leading-edge chips, the Taiwanese government has already cleared the company to produce its 2nm chips abroad, which will likely be in Arizona.

Tired Ronaldo watches his Al-Nassr fire blanks in ACL
Tired Ronaldo watches his Al-Nassr fire blanks in ACL
Cristiano Ronaldo has been sorely missed as Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia and Esteghlal of Iran drew 0-0 in the first leg of the AFC Champions League Elite second round.
Spanish international, and former Manchester City defender, Aymeric Laporte, the man who scored the only goal when the sides met on Matchday Three of the League Stage, was also missing.
It was a frustrating Monday evening in Tehran for Al-Nassr without the 40-year-old Ronaldo, who was reportedly rested due to fatigue and has collected five UEFA Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Colombian striker Jhon Duran, signed from Aston Villa in January, came closest to scoring and former Liverpool star Sadio Mane had chances but Esteghlal goalkeeper Seyed Hossein Hosseini was in fine form.
“I am satisfied with the performance of the players,” Al-Nassr’s Italian coach Stefano Pioli said.
“It is important to remember that there is another game.”
The return match takes place in Riyadh on March 11, with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates drew 1-1 with Al-Sadd in Dubai.
Ali Saleh gave the home side an early lead but a thumping Abdulla Al Yazidi header in the second half ensured a share of the spoils for the Qataris.
Four more fixtures take place on Wednesday (AEDT) – in Qatar, Uzbekistan, Thailand and China, where former Melbourne Victory boss Kevin Muscat leads his Shanghai Port side against Yokohama F. Marinos.
The 51-year-old ex-Socceroos captain coached the Marinos, taking over from now Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, to the Japanese league title in 2022 before leaving for Shanghai a year later.
Muscat won the ******** Super League and FA Cup in 2024.

US senator asks Rubio to answer questions on planned Tesla Cybertruck purchase
By David Shepardson
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal on Monday asked U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to answer questions about a reported plan to spend $400 million to purchase armored versions of Tesla Cybertrucks to transport diplomats.
Blumenthal said the State Department has publicly stated the contract was planned during the Biden administration and the Trump administration canceled it. But the senator, who is the top Democrat on a Senate investigations subcommittee, said that account has been questioned.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
“The question has been raised whether, after significant public blowback, the Trump Administration created and backdated government documents to make it appear that the idea to spend $400 million in taxpayer money on Tesla Cybertrucks originated with the previous administration,” Blumenthal wrote.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a close adviser to Trump and help lead an effort to drastically shrink the federal government and cut numerous government contracts.
Tesla and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Blumenthal said if the State Department sought to backdate a document it would raise serious questions.
“If that occurred, the Trump administration not only recognizes the tremendous conflicts of interest inherent in Mr. Musk’s dual roles, but is also taking active steps to hide the fact that it is ensuring that Mr. Musk’s position is benefiting his companies,” Blumenthal wrote.
Other questions have been raised about other potential conflicts of interest for Musk, including at the Federal Aviation Administration over a $2.4 billion telecommunications contract with Verizon and the potential that the contract could be given to Musk’s Starlink satellite telecommunications company, which is part of SpaceX.

Melania Trump Makes First Solo Appearance Of Husband’s New Term To Push For Bill Addressing Revenge Porn And AI Deepfakes
Melania Trump Makes First Solo Appearance Of Husband’s New Term To Push For Bill Addressing Revenge Porn And AI Deepfakes
First Lady Melania Trump made her first solo appearance of her husband’s new term, visiting Capitol Hill to lobby for passage of legislation that would ban the publication of non-consensual ********* exploitive images, including revenge porn and AI deepfakes.
Social media platforms would be required to remove such images within 48 hours. The bill makes it a crime to knowingly publish such non-consensual intimate visual depictions.
More from Deadline
“In today’s AI-driven world, the threat of privacy breaches is alarmingly high,” the first lady said at a roundtable. “As organizations harness the power of our data, the risk of unauthorized access and misuse of personal information escalates. We must prioritize robust security measures and uphold strict ethical standards to protect individual privacy.”
She also criticized Democrats by noting that more were not present at the event, even though the legislation is co-sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). Rep. Ro Khanna was the only Democrat present.
“I was heartened to learn that Senator Cruz and Senator Klobuchar unified to prioritize this fundamental matter,” she said in prepared remarks. “I must admit, however, I expected to see more Democrat leaders with us here today to address this serious issue. Surely as adults, we can prioritize America’s children ahead of partisan politics.”
But legislation would have become law last year, as it was included in an end-of-the-year spending bill. Yet Donald Trump and Elon Musk objected to the overall bill, torpedoing its chances, and forced Congress to pass a slimmed down bill.
The Senate passed a new version of the bill last month.
“This legislation is essential for addressing the growing concerns related to online safety, protecting individual rights, and promoting a healthier digital environment,” the first lady said.
A series of other bills designed to address children’s online safety also passed the Senate with bipartisan support last year, including The Kids Online Safety Act. But that stalled out in the Republican-controlled House.
The first lady plans to attend her husband’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening.

Two people dead after car drives into crowd in Mannheim, Germany
Two people dead after car drives into crowd in Mannheim, Germany
Two people have been killed after a vehicle drove into a pedestrian area in the city of Mannheim, western Germany.
Five people were seriously injured and another five suffered minor injuries in the incident, investigators said.
Authorities arrested a “lone” suspect, a 40-year-old ******* man who resided in the neighbouring state, who prosecutors say has “concrete indications of mental illness”.
Mannheim Police issued a request that people avoid the area, but said that there is no further danger to the public.
The incident occurred at around 12:15 local time (11:15 GMT), Mannheim Police said.
Images from the scene showed police investigating a car, a small ****** Ford, which had sustained heavy damage to its front.
The state interior minister Thomas Strobl said the man, from the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate, used the vehicle “as a weapon”.
“This act is one of several crimes in the recent past in which a car was misused as a weapon,” Mr Strobl said, but added that there is no evidence to suggest the incident is connected to the Easter carnival taking place in the city.
Prosecutors said the suspect is in hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but is stable after medical treatment.
He is being investigated for two counts of ******* and several of attempted *******, Mannheim chief public prosecutor Romeo Schluessler told reporters.
Mannheim’s mayor described the incident as “abhorrent and “inhumane”.
“Our thoughts are with the dead and injured, their families and friends,” Mayor Christian Specht said.
Olaf Scholz, Germany’s outgoing chancellor, thanked the emergency services and wished “strength” for eyewitnesses in Mannheim to “process what they have experienced”.
“We mourn with the relatives of the victims of a senseless act of violence and fear for those injured,” he said in a social media post.
The incident comes at a time of heightened security as outdoor carnivals linked to Easter celebrations are held across Germany.
There was a parade through the Mannheim city centre on Sunday, with major events scheduled for Tuesday.
A market has now been closed and a street carnival in the city centre will not take place. Carnival events in the nearby suburbs of Feudenheim, Neckarau and Sandhofen have also been cancelled.
Germany has endured a number of violent attacks over the last year, which have left several people dead and hundreds injured.
Nine months ago, also in Mannheim and only a few blocks away from where Monday’s attack is believed to have taken place, an Afghan man stabbed several people, killing a policeman.
Then, in August, another knife attack left eight people injured and three dead in Solingen. The Syrian man who was charged with the crime was suspected of links with the Islamic State terrorist group.
In December a man rammed a car into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, leaving six dead and 299 injured. A 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist was arrested.
In January, a 28-year-old Afghan asylum seeker attacked a group of small children in a park in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg, killing a two-year-old child and a passer-by who tried to help the boy.
And in February, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove a car into a crowd, injuring more than two dozen people. A mother and child later died from their injuries.

Millions warned to brace for days without power as Tropical Cyclone Alfred is due to begin path towards coast
Millions warned to brace for days without power as Tropical Cyclone Alfred is due to begin path towards coast
Millions have been warned to brace for days without power after Tropical Cyclone Alfred makes landfall later this week.
The cyclone was upgraded to a category two system overnight and is expected to turn west towards Brisbane on Tuesday, with it about 560km east of the capital as of that morning.
TC Alfred is forecast to make landfall somewhere between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast by about 4am on Friday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast map.
Southeast Queensland residents and northeastern NSW coastal communities between Tewantin and Grafton have been warned to brace for damaging wind gusts up to 120km/h as early as Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast for the areas, with a warning for “dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding” issued for near and south of the cyclone’s centre from Thursday into Friday.
The Bureau warns TC Alfred’s intensity may fluctuate in the coming days, but is expected to be a category two system when it crosses the southeast Queensland coast.

Energex regional field delivery general manager Kev Lavender said residents of southeast Queensland should prepare to go three days without power, however it was too early to predict what the exact impacts would be, according to The Courier Mail.
“We are ready to respond to any impacts from severe weather when it is safe to do so. Gale-force winds and floods can cause extensive damage to the electricity network, so be prepared for extended power outages,” the Energex website stated.
Island residents risk being cut off
Residents of North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Bay Island could be cut off from the mainland as ferry services are brought to a standstill, with many needing to urgently decide whether to stay or evacuate.
Multiple ferries will run final services on Tuesday, with Amity Trader to take off from Victoria Point at 11am and Coochie at 6.45pm, marking the last ferry until potentially Friday “depending on weather conditions”.
The Straddie Flyer will also run restricted services on Wednesday, while Southern Moreton Bay Island ferries may be cancelled on Wednesday, The Courier Mail reported.
SeaLink Bay Islands indicated services may also operate on a reduced schedule on Tuesday, however services may be further affected on Wednesday and Thursday as the cyclone is forecast to hit Brisbane.

Abnormally high tides on the coast between Sandy Cape and Yamba were forecast until at least Friday, with “significant beach erosion” due to damaging surf also a concern for open beaches between Sandy Cape and Yamba.
Multiple flood watches have been issued for catchments and rivers across both states.
NSW warned to brace for powerful swells, waves and extreme winds
Bureau of Meteorology hazard preparedness manager Steven Bernasconi on Wednesday said NSW was forecast to experience gale-force winds within 24 and 48 hours as a result of the cyclone.
He said “large and powerful swells and waves” had already been recorded on NSW’s north east corner on Monday, with abnormally high tides expected on Tuesday.
He said there would be abnormally high tides and rainfall should increase into Wednesday evening, with the potential for “locally intense falls” moving into Thursday and Friday.

“Extreme winds” of 100km/h are expected towards Thursday and Friday, with waves in the southeast to potentially reach 8m and other offshore waves up to 15m.
The tropical cyclone watch spans from Sandy Cape down to the Coffs Harbour region in NSW, however Mr Bernasconi declined to say whether metro areas of NSW would also be affected by the weather event.
“That’s the current watch area for the tropical cyclone and its impacts,” Mr Bernasconi said.
“There’ll be rain elsewhere, of course, and there’ll be wind elsewhere, but that’s the focus area.”
More to come …

Prince William’s Welsh should be better, says language professor
Prince William’s Welsh should be better, says language professor
A Cardiff University language professor says he expected Prince William to do more than “read for a few seconds from an autocue” during his St David’s Day Speech.
Dr Dylan Foster Evans, head of the School of Welsh, described Prince William’s Welsh as “halting”, meaning slow and hesitant, during an appearance on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
He had pre-recorded a social media video to mark the day Wales’s patron saint is honoured and to “celebrate Wales – its history, culture and incredible people”.
It is understood the prince has been using the language-learning app Duolingo to learn the language, but is not currently having formal lessons.
Prince William’s speech followed a trip to Wales with his wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
The pair baked Welsh cakes and spoke to people in Pontypridd about how they were coping following the recent flooding.
In his message, translated to English, he said: “Hello. Today, on St David’s Day, we come together to celebrate Wales – its history, its culture, and its incredible people.
“From its breath-taking landscapes to its language, Wales continues to inspire.
“Today, we will celebrate everything that is magical about Wales.
“To the people of Wales and everybody around the world, Happy St David’s Day.”
Dr Evans said many people would have been “pleased and impressed” to hear William speaking Welsh, but added that the prince has had enough time to prepare for the role.
“It’s been known [for a long time] that he will be the Prince of Wales. Welsh does have an official status in Wales since 2011 so maybe we should expect a bit more,” he said.
The prince has previously revealed that he was using the Duolingo app to lean some conversational Welsh.
This is in contrast to his father, King Charles, who had formal lessons in the Welsh language whilst studying at Aberystwyth University.
The lessons took place ahead of his investiture as the Prince of Wales in July that year at Caernarfon Castle.
William has not had an investiture since his father announced he had created his eldest son and heir as Prince of Wales during his first televised address as monarch, the day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Andrew Tate expresses disappointment in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for caving to media pressure
Andrew Tate expresses disappointment in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for caving to media pressure
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Andrew Tate said he was disappointed in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday while speaking on a podcast several days after he and his brother, Tristan, who are charged with human trafficking in Romania, returned to the U.S.
Andrew Tate appeared on the PBD Podcast, hosted by Patrick Bet-David, and said DeSantis likely caved to media pressure last week when he told reporters that the Tates weren’t welcome in Florida, after they landed in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday. DeSantis said Florida’s attorney general was examining whether the state may have any jurisdiction over the brothers’ alleged crimes, and if so, how to hold them accountable. In court documents, the Tates have said they are not and have never been Florida residents.
“I don’t know why Ron’s answer wasn’t, ‘He has an American passport. The judicial system in Romania, which I know absolutely nothing about, decided to let him fly, and he’s flown to his home country. As far as we’re concerned, he’s broken no laws,’” Tate said. “Instead, what he did was say: ‘We’re going to get our attorney general to try and find some laws he’s broken and wreck this man who’s done nothing inside of the United States ever.'”

In contrast, Tate described U.S. President Donald Trump as “such a boss” in his response to reporters about the Tate brothers. A reporter asked Trump if his administration had pressured the Romanian government to release the brothers, and Trump said, “I know nothing about that.”
Andrew Tate, 38, is a former professional kickboxer and self-described misogynist who has amassed more than 10 million followers on the social platform X. He and his brother Tristan Tate, 36, are vocal supporters of Trump.
Andrew reiterated on Monday that he has not been convicted of any crimes.
“Isn’t the whole point of democracy, innocent until proven guilty?” Tate said. “I’ve yet to even have a trial, let alone a conviction. I’ve never even been tried after three years. I’ve never been to trial.”
Andrew Tate is a hugely successful social media figure, attracting millions of followers, many of them young men and schoolchildren drawn in by the luxurious lifestyle the influencer projects online.
He previously was banned from TikTok, YouTube and Facebook for hate speech and his misogynistic comments, including that women should bear responsibility for getting ********* assaulted.
The Tates, who are dual U.S.-British citizens, were arrested in late 2022 and formally indicted last year on charges they participated in a criminal ring that lured women to Romania, where they were ********* exploited. Andrew Tate was also charged with *****. They deny the allegations.
The Tates’ departure came after Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu said this month that a Trump administration official expressed interest in the brothers’ case at the recent Munich Security Conference.
Just weeks ago, Andrew Tate posted on X: “The Tates will be free, Trump is the president. The good old days are back. And they will be better than ever. Hold on.”
The DeSantis’ office didn’t immediately reply to an email seeking comment about Monday’s podcast with Tate.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy stresses gratitude for U.S. after clash with Trump, as Europe shows new solidarity against Russia
Ukraine’s Zelenskyy stresses gratitude for U.S. after clash with Trump, as Europe shows new solidarity against Russia
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country felt the full support of its European allies after a summit in London over the weekend, as he reiterated the need for Western security guarantees as part of any agreement to secure a lasting end to the war sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of his country three years ago. Ukraine fears Russia would renege on any peace deal that doesn’t carry with it the threat that Ukraine’s partners would come to its aid in case of a violation.
“For peace to be real, we need real security guarantees. And this is the position of all of Europe – the entire continent,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post Monday, three days after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused him of being “disrespectful” and failing to offer thanks during a contentious Oval Office meeting with news cameras rolling.
“Of course, we understand the importance of America, and we are grateful for all the support we’ve received from the United States,” Zelenskyy said Monday. “There has not been a day when we haven’t felt gratitude. It’s gratitude for the preservation of our independence – our resilience in Ukraine is based on what our partners are doing for us – and for their own security. What we need is peace, not endless war. And that’s why we say security guarantees are the key to this.”
The Sunday summit of European leaders organized by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer was already scheduled before the tense meeting in Washington between Zelenskyy and Mr. Trump, but it took on new meaning in the wake of the exchange.
Mr. Trump’s attitude toward Ukraine’s wartime president compounded existing concerns among European leaders about the current American administration’s commitment to ensuring not only Ukraine’s independence going forward, but European security in general as the continent faces an increasingly aggressive Russian state run by authoritarian leader Vladimir Putin.
“This is not a moment for more talk. It’s time to act,” Starmer said after the gathering with his fellow European leaders on Sunday. “Time to step up and lead and to unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace.”

After the summit on Sunday, Zelenskyy gave a briefing in Ukrainian in which he said he believed a peace deal with Russia “is still very, very far away,” but that Ukraine’s relationship with the U.S. would remain strong.
“I think our relationship (with the U.S.) will continue, because it’s more than an occasional relationship,” Zelenskyy said, referring to the support the U.S. has provided Ukraine since Russia’s invasion. His comments were covered by the Associated Press.
Later on Monday, Mr. Trump posted a link to the AP’s story covering Zelenskyy’s comments and criticized the Ukrainian leader.
“This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” Mr. Trump said. “It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S. – Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?”
What came out of the London summit?
Starmer said Monday that there were “a number of options on the table” for possible peace plans to end the war Russia started, all of which were developed alongside Ukraine, but he said he didn’t want to get “into a running commentary on the options.”
“We have to learn from the mistakes of the past,” Starmer said. “We cannot accept a weak deal which Russia can breach with ease. Instead, any deal must be backed by strength.”
Ahead of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron told local media one possible plan would involve a monthlong ceasefire, but covering only the air, sea and energy infrastructure, not the ongoing and deadly ground fighting.
After the summit, Starmer announced four key points that he said had been agreed to by the European leaders:
To maintain military aid flowing to Ukraine and continue applying economic pressure on Russia
That Ukraine must be present at any peace talks, and that any lasting peace must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and security
To boost Ukraine’s defensive capabilities if a peace deal is agreed to halt the war
To create a “coalition of the willing” to help defend any peace deal that is implemented in Ukraine.
Starmer also announced a new agreement that will enable Ukraine to obtain about $2 billion worth of missiles made in Northern Ireland to continue its war effort.
Ripple effects from White House meeting still being felt
Russia has lauded Mr. Trump in the wake of his clash with Zelenskyy, which came after a week that saw the U.S. leader echo false talking points Moscow has pushed since it launched its full-scale invasion, including the assertion that Ukraine started the war and that Zelenskyy is an illegitimate leader.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Monday that “the Kyiv regime and Zelenskyy do not want peace,” adding that the clash between Mr. Trump and Zelenskyy, “demonstrated how difficult it will be to reach a settlement trajectory around Ukraine.”
“It is very important that someone forces Zelenskyy himself to change his position,” Peskov said. “Someone has to make Zelenskyy want peace. If the Europeans can do it, they should be honored and praised.”
In the meantime, Russia has continued hammering Ukraine with deadly airstrikes. More than 80 explosive drones were launched at Ukraine overnight, killing at least eight people, including a 7-year-old child, CBS News’ partner network BBC News reported Monday.
Zelenskyy said Sunday that Ukraine was still willing to sign a minerals deal with the Trump administration which would grant the U.S. access to Ukraine’s prized natural resources. He had been expected to sign the deal during his visit to Washington last week, but never committed to it in advance as it was unclear whether Ukraine was being offered security guarantees in exchange for its mineral wealth, and he was then asked to leave the White House early following the tense exchange with Mr. Trump.
U.S. national security adviser Mike Waltz, speaking Monday on Fox News, said it seemed as though Zelenskyy was “not ready to talk peace.” He said, however, that if the Ukrainian leader is seen as changing that stance, showing he “has regret” for the way things transpired in Washington, and is ready to sign a deal on Ukraine’s minerals, he wouldn’t rule out Kyiv and Washington reaching an agreement. He even suggested it could come together in time for Mr. Trump to announce a deal when he delivers a national address on Tuesday night.
“We’d certainly like to see that happen,” Waltz said.
Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it was “impossible to have an economic deal without a peace deal,” and he accused Zelenskyy of having “thrown off the sequencing” of the deals by trying “to relitigate in front of the world” in the Oval Office.
But some European leaders disagreed with that interpretation of events.
“My assessment is that it wasn’t a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskyy, but apparently an induced escalation in this meeting in the Oval Office,” Friedrich Merz, who is likely to be Germany’s next leader, said Monday. “We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe.”
