  2. PS3 Has Received A New System Software Update in 2025 PS3 Has Received A New System Software Update in 2025 · · March 5, 2025 Sony PlayStation website has just revealed a new system software update for the PS3, almost decades after the console was released. Surprisingly, the PS3 has received a software update when we are already two generations ahead with the PS5; however, the update has indeed arrived. PS3’s update 4.92 introduces improvements to system performance. Moreover, this update will be required to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key, so players not using the gaming console can still take advantage of the PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray disc player. To download the latest update for the PS3, players need 200MB of free space on the hard disk drive or removable storage media. The update announcement post also revealed how to update the PS3’s system software through the console itself or PC. Check out the steps for the two ways to update your system software on the PlayStation 3 below. PS3 Update Using the Internet The traditional method is the first way to update to the latest system software. Players need to go to the Settings tab, visit the ‘System Update’ page, and then select ‘Update via Internet’. Once the update is downloaded, it can be installed by following the steps on the screen. Updating Using a Computer PlayStation 3 also offers an option to update the console through removable storage media from a computer. Players should visit this website and download the latest updates. Then, create a folder named “PS3” on a USB drive formatted as FAT32 and create another folder inside this folder with the title ‘UPDATE’. Now download and save the new update as “PS3UPDAT.PUP” in the ‘UPDATE’ folder. Once you have followed the above steps, connect the USB device to the PS3, visit the Settings page, click ‘System Update’, and then select ‘Update via Storage Media’. In other news, PlayStation has announced a new beta program to test upcoming features. Also, Forza Horizon 5 will not have a physical release on the PS5. 3. These are the most competitive rental markets in the U.S. These are the most competitive rental markets in the U.S. Residential apartment buildings in the Brooklyn borough of New York, US, on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. Yuki Iwamura | Bloomberg | Getty Images New apartment construction hit a record high last year, but all that new supply is apparently not enough to cool the competition in the market. Getting a rental is actually becoming even more difficult, according to a new report from RentCafe, an apartment search site. Last year, developers completed close to 600,000 multifamily units, according to the U.S. Census. That is the highest level since 1974 and a 34% increase from 2023. New York City, Dallas and Austin, Texas, led in the number of new rentals. Despite that, on a national level, rental competitiveness rose at the start of this year, according to RentCafe’s Rental Competitiveness Index. That’s in large part because a growing number of renters are not moving. Lease renewal rates rose to 63.1% in the early part of this year, compared with 61.5% in the early part of last year, according to RentCafe. Much of that is likely due to higher mortgage rates and higher prices in the for-***** housing market. Apartment occupancy is also holding firm at 93.3%, slightly higher than at the beginning of last year. In addition, landlords are offering longer lease periods, which then lead to extended renewal periods, according to the report. As a result, each available apartment has an average of seven applicants. Looking locally, Miami has the highest occupancy rate. It is the most competitive, with an average 14 applicants for each unit. “Throughout the last few years, Miami has established itself as ‘Wall Street South,’ attracting major banking institutions and investment firms, while existing industries like tech and healthcare continue to grow, bringing in more workers,” wrote Veronica Grecu, senior creative writer and researcher for RentCafe, in the report. “Plus, Miami’s lack of income tax and its location at the crossroads of the Americas remain major draws for professionals and businesses.” The Midwest, however, leads in overall rental competitiveness. Ten of the top 20 hottest rental markets are in the region, with suburban Chicago coming in second behind Miami. Others include Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids in Michigan, as well as Cincinnati, Ohio; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Minnesota. Rents, which had been easing, are now on the rise again. Nationwide, rents increased 0.3% in February, the first monthly increase in rents following six consecutive months of declines, according to ApartmentList. February is the start of the historically busy season in the rental market, and rents are expected to rise throughout the summer. Rents are still 0.4% lower than they were in February of last year, however. Following a ******* of record-setting rent growth in 2021 and the first half of 2022, the national median rent has now fallen below its August 2022 peak by a total of 4.6%, or $67 per month, according to ApartmentList. The typical rent price, however, is still 20% higher than it was in January 2021. “Year-over-year rent growth has now been negative since June 2023, but in recent months, there are signs that a return to positive growth is on the horizon,” according to the ApartmentList report’s authors. 7. Apple’s new Mac Studio breaks records in more ways than one Apple’s new Mac Studio breaks records in more ways than one Apple has announced a new Mac Studio to add to the company’s range of high-end Macs. In a surprising twist, the new Mac Studio will come in two flavors, one containing the M4 Max and one containing a previously unreleased chip: The M3 Ultra. It’s safe to say that this Mac Studio will break several records, all thanks to the staggering amounts of unified memory and storage that it’s equipped with — but also largely thanks to the eye-watering price. The M3 Ultra is a new addition to the lineup. Apple says that it’s built for AI and promises to deliver up to 2.5x the performance of the M1 Ultra, although there’s no mention of how much faster it’ll be than the M2 Ultra. M3 Ultra, and thus the Mac Studio, will offer support for up to 512GB of unified memory, which, as Apple says, is “the most ever in a personal computer.” The basic configuration of the new Mac Studio starts at 96GB, but you can deck it out with up to 512GB. That’s going to be huge for creators who need a lot of power to run various resource-heavy workloads. Apple teases that the Mac Studio can run large language models (LLMs) with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory, so that 512GB is bound to come in handy, even if it’s a pricey upgrade. Apple As is usually the case with Apple, the new Mac Studio comes in several configurations. The top M4 Max setup includes, at most, a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. Meanwhile, the top M3 Ultra setup provides a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and up to a whopping 16TB of SSD storage. Digging deeper into the M3 Ultra, the chip is made out of two 3nm M3 Max dies combined with Apple’s UltraFusion packaging architecture. This brings it to a whopping 184 billion transistors. The new chip supports Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, with each port equipped with a custom-designed controller placed directly on the chip. This means dedicated bandwidth for each of the ports, which feature transfer rates of up to 120Gb/s. Apple Apple promises a hefty performance boost from using the new Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra. Some of the highlights include up to 16.9x faster token generation in LLMs; up to 2.6x faster scene rendering performance, and up to 1.4x faster 8K video rendering. All of these comparisons are made against the M1 Ultra, though. The new Mac Studio is now available for pre-order with availability starting on March 12. The base model costs $1,999 (or $1,799 for education), but the prices go up exponentially as you upgrade the chip, the memory, and the storage. The top configuration costs a whopping $14,099. It comes just one day after Apple launched a new iPad Air with M3 chip, which Apple CEO Tim Cook teased on X with the phrase “there’s something in the air.” The Mac Studio received no such clue leading up to its reveal, making its announcement more of a surprise. Although a new Mac Studio has been expected for some time, past rumors had suggested that it might not launch until around the middle of the year. Now, though, professional and creative users will have an updated Mac Studio that’s designed to handle their demanding workloads. Anyone needing even more power should look to the Mac Pro, which is expected to be retooled with new chips later in 2025. Apple also launched a new MacBook Air, starting at $999. 9. Trump Commerce chief Lutnick blames Biden for economy Trump Commerce chief Lutnick blames Biden for economy US President Donald Trump acknowledging the crowd following his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States in the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, DC, USA, 20 January 2025. Shawn Thew | Via Reuters Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick argued Wednesday that former President Joe Biden — not his boss, President Donald Trump — is to blame for recent negative economic data and a plunge in stock prices. “The president spoke about it last night,” Lutnick said in an interview on Bloomberg television. “He said Biden left him a pile of poop.” “He left him a lot of the economy that [Trump’s] trying to fix,” Lutnick said. Trump in an address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night said Biden had left him an “economic catastrophe” and an “inflation nightmare” to deal with. In fact, the U.S. economy grew by 2.8% in the past year, and the inflation rate in December was 2.9% — well below the 40-year high of 9.1% hit in June 2022. Lutnick’s comments came as he was asked by Bloomberg about “data over the last few weeks that hasn’t been great,” as well as concerns that Trump’s massive new tariffs on Canada and Mexico will stall economic growth and stock prices. “You’re looking at Biden data,” Lutnick retorted. “Do not try to besmirch my President Trump with Biden’s nonsense,” Lutnick said., “We are in the middle of March,” he said. “My president took over Jan. 20. You think economic data coming out in early March is Donald Trump-related data?” “Come on. You got to be kidding me,” he said. “Stop it, stop it, stop it.” Pressed on whether he was arguing that troubling economic data was misleading, Lutnick said, “I think that data is leading you to understand that if Joe Biden was still in charge, you’d be in trouble.” “But you have a new president, you have a new sheriff in charge,” Lutnick said. “You see the investments, you see already there’s trillions of dollars of manufacturing moving to America.” Earlier Wednesday, the payroll processing firm ADP reported that companies added just 77,000 new workers in February, well below the upwardly revised figure of 186,000 workers in January, and almost half of what was the Dow Jones consensus estimate for the month. On Monday and Tuesday, the benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 1,300 points combined. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick speaks as President Donald Trump, left, listens, during an investment announcement in the White House in Washington, D.C., March 3, 2025. Samuel Corum | Bloomberg | Getty Images Also on Monday, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta issued a forecast that calls for gross domestic product to fall by 2.8% in the first quarter of 2025, down from -1.5% last week. The Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow estimate in mid-February had projected a rise — not a drop — of 2.3% And last week, the Conference Board reported that U.S. “consumer confidence dropped sharply in February,” which was Trump’s first full month back in the White House. The 7-point drop was the largest decline in consumer confidence since August 2021. Read more CNBC politics coverage Wednesday was not the first time Lutnick tried to put distance between the Trump White House and economic data it does not like. On Sunday, he suggested the administration might change how gross domestic product is tabulated. “You know that governments historically have messed with GDP,” Lutnick said on Fox News. “They count government spending as part of GDP. So I’m going to separate those two and make it transparent.” The idea was quickly panned by economists. Breaking out government spending as a separate category from consumer spending in GDP calculations “could potentially complicate or distort a fundamental measure of the U.S. economy’s health.” the Associated Press noted. The idea has at least one high-profile fan, however: Elon Musk. Musk, whose Department of Government Efficiency is waging a crusade to shrink the federal government’s workforce and its budget, on Friday tweeted: “A more accurate measure of GDP would exclude government spending.” “Otherwise, you can scale GDP artificially high by spending money on things that don’t make people’s lives better,” Musk wrote. Lutnick’s suggestion that economic data was open to political revision is part of a broader Trump administration campaign against government data collection and dissemination. Last week, Lutnick disbanded two expert committees that worked with the government to produce economic statistics, Reuters reported Tuesday. One of them, the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee, helped generate data on inflation, on employment, and on gross domestic product. 10. Dozens feared dead in Sudan after attack on Abu Shouk market Dozens feared dead in Sudan after attack on Abu Shouk market Dozens of people in the Sudanese state of North Darfur are feared dead following heavy shelling on a camp for displaced people. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a crowded market at Abu Shouk, a camp on the outskirts of the city of el-Fasher, for roughly two hours on Tuesday evening, a local official told the BBC. The camp is home to over half a million displaced people and the assault on its market is the second in three days. El-Fasher is the last major town in Darfur under army control and has been under siege by the RSF for almost a year. Tuesday’s attack on Abu Shouk took place at the busiest time of day. The camp’s population are mostly Muslims, who are observing the holy month of Ramadan, and many were out shopping at the market, preparing to break their fast for the day. The shelling caused several injuries, ranging from mild to severe, Dr Ibrahim Nadyan, a medic at el-Fasher’s last functioning hospital, told the BBC. Abu Shouk was also shelled by the RSF on Sunday, in an attack that that killed six civilians, local health volunteers said. The RSF has not commented on either Sunday or Tuesday’s attack. Since it erupted in April 2023, the war has killed tens of thousands of people, forced millions from their homes and left many facing famine. Both the RSF and the army have been accused of committing atrocities, with the RSF accused of committed a genocide in Darfur against the region’s non-Arabic groups. The conflict has split the country, with the army controlling the north and the east, while the RSF holds most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south. In recent weeks, the army has retaken parts of Khartoum and surrounding areas from the RSF. 11. Nine things about the country Donald Trump says ‘nobody has ever heard of’ Nine things about the country Donald Trump says ‘nobody has ever heard of’ Basillioh Rukanga BBC News AFP The Basotho people are well known for their traditional blankets US President Donald Trump has said that “nobody has ever heard of” the African country of Lesotho – a comment that has “shocked” its government. It is a small country in southern Africa that almost entirely consists of mountains and is completely surrounded by South Africa. Here are nine things to know about the country: ‘The Kingdom in the Sky’ The Kingdom of Lesotho is made up mostly of highlands, where many villages can only be reached on horseback, by foot or light aircraft. It is known as the “Kingdom in the Sky” and is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters (3,281 ft) in elevation, according to Encyclopaedia Brittanica. Its lowest point is at 1,400m. It is known to have one of the world’s most intimidating airstrips to land on – the Matekane Airstrip has a short runway and with long drops at both ends. The Business Insider website describes flying from the airport as “essentially the same as when a bird is pushed out of the nest in order to learn to fly”. It’s completely surrounded by South Africa Lesotho is completely encircled by South Africa, but separated by the forbidding mountain ranges. Not much of its land is available for farming, with its population vulnerable to food shortages and relying on income from jobs in South Africa. Over the decades thousands of workers have been forced by the lack of job opportunities at home to find work in South Africa. The people of Lesotho share some cultural and language similarities with South Africans. Their language, Sesotho, is also one of South Africa’s 11 official languages. Lesotho’s biggest resource is ‘white gold’ Resources are scarce in Lesotho – a consequence of the harsh environment of the highland plateau and limited agricultural space in the lowlands. Its biggest resource is water – known locally as white gold – which is exported to South Africa. Diamonds are another major export. The highest ski resort in sub-Saharan Africa When you think of skiing and snowboarding, you may imagine the snowy slopes of Europe and North America. But Lesotho has been making itself known on the snowsports scene. It has the highest ski resort in sub-Saharan Africa, one of just a handful on the continent. Afriski is situated 3,222m above sea level, high up in Lesotho’s Maloti mountains and attracts visitors from Africa and beyond. People from Lesotho are called Basotho People from Lesotho are referred to as Basotho. Some of the cultural items associated with the Basotho people are their blankets and the Basotho traditional conical hats, known as the mokorotlo. The hat is a national symbol and appears in the middle of the country’s flag. The blankets are made from thick wool, with their intricate and colourful patterns each telling a different story of the Basotho people’s history. The Basotho wear them as shawls at special events and give them as gifts. It has one of the highest **** rates in the world Lesotho has one of the highest rates of **** prevalence in the world, with one in five adults living with ****, and more infections per 100,000 people than most other countries, including neighbouring Namibia, Botswana and Eswatini. The US government has committed nearly $1bn to help the country deal with **** since 2006, including for prevention, care and treatment services, according to the US State Department. Prince Harry has long-standing personal charity interests in Lesotho Prince Harry and his close friend Lesotho’s Prince Seeiso have set up a charity in the country – Sentebale, which means “forget me not”. The charity works with local communities in Lesotho at grassroots level, helping young people affected by ****/Aids. Prince Harry first went to Lesotho as a 19-year-old and has returned to the country many times since then. It exports jeans to the US Lesotho is one of the largest sub-Saharan African exporters of clothing to the US, according to the US government’s International Trade Administration (ITA) website. The exports, which include jeans and textiles, are done through the US trade programme, African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) which allows eligible African countries to send some of goods to the US without paying taxes. It is ranked second by value of goods exported under the deal. The country with the world’s highest suicide rate The mountain kingdom has the world’s highest suicide rate, with 87.5 people per 100,000 of the population taking their own life every year, according to the World Health Organization. This is nearly 10 times the global average of nine and more than double the country with the second highest rate, Guyana, which has about 40. There is no single reason for this shocking statistic – experts point to the abuse of drugs and alcohol, the shortage of jobs and the lack of mental health counselling. 13. Apple’s M4 MacBook Air combines power and portability for $999 Apple’s M4 MacBook Air combines power and portability for $999 Apple has just launched a new MacBook Air equipped with its M4 chip, bringing improved performance and efficiency to one of the company’s best MacBooks. The long-rumored update means that all of Apple’s laptops now come with the M4 chip. As expected, the M4 MacBook Air is more of an evolution than a revolution. The M4 chip means a slight improvement in terms of performance compared to the previous M3 version, but there are few changes elsewhere. According to Apple, the M4 MacBook Air can perform tasks like video editing and photo editing up to 2x faster than its M1 counterpart — so upgrading could be worth it for M1 owners. The laptop’s chassis remains the same, as do its display, speakers, and keyboard. Apple last updated the MacBook Air’s design in 2022, and the company is not expected to repeat the trick for another couple of years. However, a new “sky blue” color has been added to the lineup and the base price has been lowered to $999 — that’s a $100 drop. Other additions include a new 12MP Center Stage camera and support for two 6K external displays alongside its built-in display. Both the 13-inch and 15-inch models are available to pre-order today, with a release date of March 12. The M4 chip (or some variation of it) is now present in the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, the iMac, and the Mac Studio, putting it in about half of Apple’s computers. Other Macs, like the Mac Pro, have not yet received the chip, but are expected to make the transition over the next few months. Rumors suggest that Apple will quickly move on to the M5, with a new MacBook Pro bearing this chip landing in late 2025. Apple has begun switching most of its Macs to an annual release cycle, so we will likely see an M5 MacBook Air arrive sometime in 2026. 14. Peaty omitted from GB’s world-class programme for 2025 Peaty omitted from GB’s world-class programme for 2025 Six-time Olympic medallist Adam Peaty has not been included in the group of elite swimmers that will be supported by Aquatics GB throughout 2025. There had been doubts about whether Peaty, 30, would retire after his silver medal at the Paris Olympics last summer, but he told the BBC last year he would take a break over the next two years while still training. Despite not being selected as one of the 57 swimmers on Aquatics GB world-class programme, Peaty has not announced his retirement. He remains involved with the British swimming programme but is on an adjusted training schedule after an extended break post-Paris with the next Olympics more than three years away. Peaty, who won the first of his three Olympic gold medals at the Rio Games in 2016, posted on Instagram last month that he had “slowly” started building up his fitness and technique in training. He has not publicly committed to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but has said he will “100%” compete if the 50m breaststroke event is added to the schedule. Ten Olympic medalists, including Matt Richards, Duncan Scott, Tom Dean and James Guy, have been included in the top-tier Aquatics GB programme which gives access to funding, training and sport science support. 15. Facebook scammers want you to think Elon Musk can cure diabetes Facebook scammers want you to think Elon Musk can cure diabetes Elon Musk discovered a simple 30-second “fridge trick” that can reverse diabetes, but the discovery has spooked pharmaceutical companies so much they put a $78 million bounty on his head, forcing the Tesla CEO to flee the country. At least, that’s what a collection of AI-generated Facebook ads claim. Facebook ads depicting deepfakes of Elon Musk and Fox News personalities claiming that the Tesla CEO has discovered the cure for diabetes have been circulating on the platform for weeks. The ads seem to be part of a wider scam that uses the deepfakes to sell unproven supplements. Engadget has identified scores of pages running versions of these ads since early February. Though many of the ads don’t stay up for very long, the same pages have repeatedly run dozens or even hundreds of versions of the videos, all of which follow a similar format. The vast majority feature Elon Musk and Fox News hosts, but there are also versions with other notable figures, including Oprah Winfrey, former Utah Senator Mitt Romney and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Using social media to hawk sketchy supplements isn’t exactly new. AFP Fact Check detailed a similar ring of scammy Facebook ads promoting supplements that purported to cure high blood pressure last year. But the addition of AI-manipulated video and deepfaked audio of Musk adds a new layer to such scams. While this particular scam has apparently gone largely undetected by Meta, the company is well aware that fraudsters often use celebrities and other public figures to lure in unsuspecting users. A Polish billionaire recently won a legal battle with the company over deepfake ads that used his likeness. Last fall, the company announced that it would bring back facial recognition technology in an effort to fight “celeb bait” scams. To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Musk, of course, is no stranger to impersonation scams. Crypto scammers have impersonated him across social media for years. His new position as a close lieutenant of President Donald Trump and head of the “Department of Government Efficiency,” however, makes him an even more attractive target to fraudsters hoping to capitalize on his newfound authority. Several of the ads identified by Engadget feature video clips of Musk’s recent public appearances and speeches. These include ads with AI-generated audio overlaid onto video from an onstage interview this month at the Conservative Political Action Conference, known as CPAC, and a photo opp in the Oval Office. “There are a lot of different ‘blood sugar support,’ type 2 diabetes, reverse diabetes, sort of scams out there these days,” says Jordan Liles, a senior reporter at Snopes who has debunked some of these videos on his YouTube channel. “It’s the same sort of process you might see with other scams in that they start with an ad, they go to a long video on a website, and then they want you to order the product. And they want you to believe everything that you just saw is real.” These ads seem to violate multiple policies of Meta, including its rules around medical misinformation and requirements for advertisers to disclose the use of AI-manipulated media. And many of the ads identified by Engadget appear to have been removed within a day or two. But many of the Facebook pages behind these ads, which have names like “Mindful Medicine,” “Your health compass” and “The Wellbeing Spot” remain active. Several pages repeatedly ran dozens of new ads with similar content shortly after the old ones were removed. Because ads that are taken down are removed from Meta’s Ad Library along with their associated analytics, it’s hard to know just how many accounts they are reaching. But the few that remain viewable offer some clues. One such ad, from a page called “Healthy Style,” was active on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger for three days, according to the company’s Ad Library. The advertiser paid Meta between $300 and $399 for the ad, which generated 5,000 – 6,000 impressions. At one point in February, the page was running 177 versions of a similar ad. Another, from a page called “Hydromeduoside” also ran for two days, generating between 10,000 and 15,000 impressions across Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. It cost between $400 and $499, according to the Ad Library. Both ads were removed by Meta because they “ran without the required disclaimer” for ads about social and political issues, according to a notice in the Ad Library, despite likely breaking other rules and having no particular relation to politics. To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Meta removed the “Healthy Style” page after an inquiry from Engadget. The company said in a statement it was investigating the ads and taking action on other pages. “The ad review system reviews ads for violations of our policies,” a spokesperson said. “This review process may include the specific components of an ad, such as images, video, text and targeting information, as well as an ad’s associated landing page or other destinations, among other information.” The ads follow a similar script. They often open with deepfakes of Fox News personalities discussing how Musk recently “blew up the internet” with his discovery that “big pharma” doesn’t want you to see. The ads then cut to an AI-manipulated video clip of him from a podcast or other public appearance. Many of the ads refer to the “MAHA” website, an apparent reference to Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement. The ads never disclose the actual “trick” for reversing diabetes. In one version, Musk says all you need is a “common fruit.” In another, Kennedy says it requires a “frozen lemon.” Another suggests that all you need is “a lemon and a pair of socks.” The ads urge viewers to visit a linked website to find a guide “before it’s wiped from the internet.” Bizarrely, the videos end with several minutes of silence that show a still image of a random object like a clock, calculator or blood pressure cuff. To view this content, you’ll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the “Content and social-media partners” setting to do so. Most of these ads link to websites that attempt to spoof mainstream news sites like Fox News, CNN or Yahoo (Engadget’s parent company). These websites typically don’t have obvious links to supplements, but feature additional lengthy videos with AI-manipulated clips of cable news personalities. These videos, which can run upward of 20 minutes, often feature old video clips with AI-generated audio of Barbra O’Neill, an *********** naturopath who was permanently banned from offering health-related services in her home country after claiming that ******* could be cured with baking soda. (There’s no evidence that O’Neill, who has emerged as a popular wellness influencer in the US in recent years, is actually associated with these websites. As The Guardian reported last year, O’Neill is often impersonated by scammers using AI-generated content to sell unproven remedies on Facebook and TikTok. Her official Facebook page often warns followers about scammers who impersonate her on and off Facebook. A representative for O’Neill didn’t respond to a request for comment.) Once you make it to the end of the video, a link appears offering a time-limited “deal” on a supplement called “Gluco Revive.” The supplement, which is also available from third-party sellers on Amazon and walmart.com, doesn’t actually claim to treat any condition related to diabetes in its marketing. Instead, it suggests it offers “blood support” that “boosts energy levels” and “supports healthy weight.” According to its label, it has a “proprietary blend” of ingredients like juniper berry powder and bitter melon extract. An example of one of the websites linked from a Facebook ad that attempts to spoof Fox News. The FDA has previously warned consumers about companies selling over the counter diabetes treatments and supplements. “There are no dietary supplements that treat or cure diabetes,” the agency wrote in a warning published in December. “Some ‘all-natural’ diabetes products contain hidden active ingredients found in approved prescription drugs used to treat diabetes … these products may interact in dangerous ways with other medications.” While it’s impossible to know just how many people have been duped by these ads, there are dozens of listings for Gluco Revive on Amazon, some of which indicate there have been thousands of sales in the last month. The reviews on Amazon, where it’s sold for anywhere from $22 – $70, suggest that some people may have purchased the supplements after seeing one of the ads described above. “It’s not working. I thought someone from the company was going to call me on what to do. Dr. O’Neil [sic] said that we might feel a change in about 17 hours. It’s been 7 days and I feel no difference.” “This does not work and in fact raised my blood sugar,” another reviewer reports, noting they found the product via Facebook. “When contacting the suppler [sic] they did send me a Return authorization number and address to send the unused bottles …I boxed them up [and] sent priority shipping and it’s being returned as no such address. I called USPS and they let me know that it was a scam and they have had 100s of returns to that address [and] that they do not exist.” Though Gluco Revive appears to be the most prevalent supplement sold via this scam, some linked pages from the Facebook ads sell similar products, like “Gluco Control,” which purports to be a “a 100% natural, safe, and effective blood sugar management product.” The website says it’s made up of gymnema sylvestre, grape seed extract, green tea extract and “African mango extract.” The website features a list of scientific references and media endorsements that appear to be entirely made up. Another page promotes something called “Gluco Freedom,” which has a similar ingredient list, and offers a 180-day supply for $294. Liles, the Snopes reporter who identified the Gluco Revive ads on Facebook in early February, and has researched many similar scams on social media, suspects the ads are having some success. “If the same product gets weeks and weeks, or months or longer of advertising, that means that it’s something that they’re seeing results with,” he says. Both UBS and Bank of America reiterated previously stated buy ratings on the sneaker company this week. BofA research analyst Thierry Cota called On stock “a home run,” while UBS analyst Jay Sole lauded its growth profile. On Holding reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results on Tuesday, and also surpassed Wall Street’s organic growth forecasts. Shares have ticked down about 3% so far in 2025. However, the stock has bucked the recent selling pressure in the broader market, rising more than 10% week to date. ONON YTD mountain On Holding stock. “We think On’s continued focus on innovation, performance, athletes, sports, direct-to-consumer selling, and maintaining a premium, full-price brand image will lead to industry leading sales growth and earnings beats,” Sole said. UBS’ $73 per share price target, up from $65, implies more than 44% upside ahead from the stock’s $50.63 close on Tuesday. BofA, which was equally complimentary in its most recent note, also has a $73 per share price target. The targets are above Wall Street’s consensus of 64.24, according to LSEG. “ONON is a highly innovative athletic footwear brand well positioned to gain share,” Cota said. “We expect its superior growth to be fueled by strong brand heat momentum and product diversification opportunities.” Source link #Home #run #growth #stock Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The Americans and their leader must understand that. We are not for ***** and cannot simply be taken. Our future will be decided by us in Greenland,” he added in his post, a week before Greenland heads to the polls for parliamentary elections. Egede’s remarks come after Trump said the United States had “a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland” while addressing a joint session of Congress in a televised speech on Tuesday. Story continues below advertisement “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” Trump said halfway through his 90-minute speech. “We will keep you safe. And very, very important for military security.” Story continues below advertisement Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, asked about Trump’s latest comments on Wednesday, said he did not think Greenlanders wanted to separate from Denmark in order to become “an integrated part of America.” Løkke said he believed that Trump’s reference to respecting Greenlanders’ right to self-determination was “the most important part of that speech.” “I’m very optimistic about what will be a Greenlandic decision about this. They want to loosen their ties to Denmark, we’re working on that, to have a more equal relationship,” Løkke said during a trip to Finland, adding that it was important that next week’s parliamentary elections are free and fair “without any kind of international intervention.” Trump has been speaking about acquiring Greenland since he took office for the second time in January. When asked about Greenland by reporters on Jan. 20, Trump said, “Greenland is a wonderful place, we need it for international security. I’m sure that Denmark will come along — it’s costing them a lot of money to maintain it, to keep it.” Egede addressed Trump’s comments in January, saying, “We are Greenlanders. We don’t want to be Americans. We don’t want to be Danish either. Greenland’s future will be decided by Greenland. Our country and our people will decide what happens to Greenland.” 2:16 Amid 51st state threats, Canada watches Trump’s Greenland plan simmer Previous Video Next Video Story continues below advertisement Trump doubled down and said he wouldn’t rule out using force or economic pressure to make Greenland — a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark — part of the United States. Greenland, home to a large U.S. military base, is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a longtime U.S. ally and a founding member of NATO. Trump cast doubts on the legitimacy of Denmark’s claim to Greenland. Addressing Trump’s comments in an interview with Danish broadcaster TV2, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the United States Denmark’s “most important and closest ally,” and said she did not believe that the United States would use military or economic power to secure control over Greenland. Frederiksen repeated that she welcomed the United States taking a greater interest in the Arctic region, but that it would “have to be done in a way that is respectful of the Greenlandic people,” she said. “At the same time, it must be done in a way that allows Denmark and the United States to still co-operate in, among other things, NATO,” Frederiksen said. 2:16 Amid 51st state threats, Canada watches Trump’s Greenland plan simmer Previous Video Next Video Story continues below advertisement In February, a new bill was introduced by U.S. Republican Rep. Buddy Carter that, if it passes the House and Senate, would give Trump the power to enter into negotiations with Denmark to acquire Greenland and rename it. “America is back and will soon be ******* than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Carter said in a statement. “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.” Carter’s proposal gives the Office of the Secretary of the Interior six months after the bill’s potential passage to ensure that federal documents are updated to reflect the new name of “Red, White, and Blueland.” Trump initially voiced his interest in Greenland in 2019 during his first term in office. He said Greenland was “hurting Denmark very badly” and costing it US$700 million a year. His solution was to have the United States acquire Greenland, calling it “a large real estate deal.” — With files from The Associated Press More on World More videos &copy 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. Marathon was first announced via a teaser trailer released during the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, but players haven’t caught many glimpses of the upcoming shooter since its initial announcement. No official release date has been announced, and many players expect that it will launch sometime in 2026. But the discovery of the preorder bonuses has some players beginning to wonder if the game might launch sooner than that. What we do know for sure is that Marathon is a multiplayer-only first-person PvP extraction shooter set in a sci-fi universe. Player-characters are known as Runners–which makes sense when you consider the name of the game itself–but overall, details about the game are currently sparse. However, Marathon’s Steam page does give players a slightly clearer picture of what it means to be a Runner. “You are a cybernetic mercenary venturing into the unknown in a fight for survival and fortune where any run can lead to greatness,” the game’s Steam description reads. 21. How to Cook Broccoli – NYT Cooking How to Cook Broccoli – NYT Cooking “Broccoli, again?” just became “Roasted broccoli, again!” Christopher Testani for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. By Ali Slagle Ali Slagle is a recipe developer and regular contributor to NYT Cooking. Published March 4, 2025Updated March 5, 2025 When home cooks put away the steamer and started cranking their ovens instead, broccoli’s image changed from divisive to divine. Steamed broccoli can be wonderful (if you don’t overcook it to mush), but there’s something especially alluring about the crisp, nutty flowers and sweet, tender stems of roasted broccoli trees. Once you get the basics of roasting broccoli down — it just takes oil, salt and high heat — you may want to accessorize. Dress up your batches with one of these seven small steps that all accentuate the vegetable’s best angles and make it even easier to choose roasted broccoli night after night. “Broccoli, again?” just became “Roasted broccoli, again!” 1. Give it a frilly skirt of crispy Cheddar Nico Schinco for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Barrett Washburne. Broccoli and Cheddar’s forever friendship proves that opposites attract. Tenderhearted broccoli likes the assertiveness of a sharp cheese. (Broccoli also gets along with feta, Parmesan and other aged cheeses.) The cheese is so comfortable near the hot vegetable, it surrenders into ******* pockets. The real winners of this relationship, though? The eaters. Try these cheesy recipes Shower the roasted broccoli with grated Cheddar and cook it until the cheese goes past melted to crisp. | Recipe: Cheddar-Roasted Broccoli For another cheesy approach, finely grate enough Parmesan onto the broccoli that some disappears into a punchy sauce, while other shards stay feathery and soft. | Recipe: Crispy Gnocchi With Sausage and Broccoli And if you want the funk of dairy without, well, dairy, sprinkle your broccoli with a mixture of dried porcini mushrooms, cashews, pine nuts and nutritional yeast. | Recipe: Broccoli-Dill Pasta 2. Finish with citrus Linda Xiao for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Monica Pierini. The sunniness of citrus — whether lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit — re-energizes the scorched vegetable. The fruit’s juices are full of bright acidity, and the oils in the zest add floral and fragrant notes, especially when they hit hot food. Try these citrusy recipes Orange zest plays up the sweeter side of cooked broccoli, especially, like in this sautéed broccoli, when it’s contrasted with other savory ingredients such as oyster sauce. | Recipe: Sautéed Broccoli With Toasted Garlic, Orange and Sesame Stir together a sauce inspired by prik nam pla that’s perky with lime, fish sauce, chiles and herbs. | Recipe: Broccoli and Scallions With Thai-Style Vinaigrette But if you can do just one thing, zest and squeeze lemon over roasted broccoli. | Recipe: Roasted Broccoli 3. Make a buttery sauce Yossy Arefi for The New York Times (Photography and Stying) When the broccoli comes out of the oven, stir it with a pat of butter and other flavorings on the hot sheet pan until the bushy florets shine with melted butter. Look: You made a pan sauce. Try these buttery recipes For a fancy-feeling mustard pan sauce, stir butter with vinegar and Dijon mustard. | Recipe: Roasted Broccoli With Vinegar-Mustard Glaze To add a rich nuttiness, mash butter with white miso before tossing it with the broccoli. | Recipe: Miso-Butter Roasted Broccoli 4. Build a sweet-spicy-salty trifecta Bobbi Lin for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. Honey is the secret ingredient, complementing the savory notes of broccoli. Its caramel quality is a natural, if unsuspecting, pairing for those golden florets. Try these honeyed recipes Top broccoli (or its kin, cauliflower) with an herbaceous sauce like this chermoula, which is fresh with cilantro, lemon and raw garlic; grounded by paprika and cumin; and sweetened by honey. | Recipe: Roasted Cauliflower With Sweet Chermoula and Yogurt For a perfect combination of sweet-spicy-salty, finish roasted broccoli with crumbled feta, pickled jalapeños and a squiggle of honey. | Recipe: Spicy Honey Chicken With Broccoli For tangy-sweet personality, dunk broccoli (or another vegetable in its plant family, like brussels sprouts) into homemade honey mustard. | Recipe: Sheet-Pan Sausages and Brussels Sprouts With Honey Mustard 5. Double down on smokiness Christopher Testani for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Rebecca Jurkevich. The charred edges of the broccoli might be the best bites. Double down on those deep dark flavors with a whiff of smoke, using bacon, smoked paprika, smoked fish, smoked cheese or chipotles. Try these smoky recipes Roast broccoli with bite-size pieces of bacon. Eat crispy bacon and broccoli that soaked up the bacon drippings. | Recipe: Roasted Broccoli With Bacon Toss the broccoli with smoked paprika before roasting so the spice toasts, growing ever more savory. | Recipe: Roasted Broccoli and Potato Tacos With Fried Eggs 6. Make it hot David Malosh for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. You probably have something spicy in the kitchen right now: fresh jalapeños or serranos, pickled peppers, chile oil, chile crisp, hot sauce or crushed red pepper? Let one of them bring heat to the otherwise mellow, bittersweet broccoli. Try these spicy recipes Roast mini meatballs of spicy sausage alongside the broccoli. As the sausage cooks, its rendered **** will coat the broccoli. | Recipe: Sheet-Pan Sausage Meatballs With Tomatoes and Broccoli Kick and crunch with panko bread crumbs toasted with chile crisp — or, more lazily, a few dollops of chile crisp. | Recipe: Roasted Broccoli and Whipped Tofu With Chile Crisp Crunch Mix raw garlic, parsley, capers and crushed red pepper, and sprinkle the piquant mixture over the broccoli. | Recipe: Broccoli and Farro Stew With Capers and Parsley 7. Add nuts David Malosh for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Cyd Raftus McDowell. Bring out broccoli’s nuttiness by topping your florets with a garnish of toasted nuts or seeds. The simplest version is a shake of sesame seeds right from the jar, but that’s not where the possibilities end. Try these nutty recipes Go crunchy with chopped, mixed nuts and seeds; sizzle them in oil with ****** pepper and dates for added intrigue. | Recipe: Broccoli With Sizzled Nuts and Dates Go ******* by drizzling a sauce built on tahini, lime juice, sesame oil and soy sauce. | Recipe: Broccoli Salad With Peanuts and Tahini-Lime Dressing Or go ******* and crunchy with a cashew romesco, a spirited sauce built on roasted cashews, roasted red peppers, garlic, spices, vinegar and oil. | Recipe: Roasted Vegetables With Cashew Romesco Follow New York Times Cooking on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest. 22. A Viral Video of a Chained Woman in China and the Secret Campaign to Save Her A Viral Video of a Chained Woman in China and the Secret Campaign to Save Her The video blogger had visited Dongji Village, in eastern China, to find a man known for raising eight children despite deep poverty. The man had become a favorite interview subject for influencers looking to attract donations and clicks. But that day, one of the children led the blogger to someone not featured in many other videos: the child’s mother. She stood in a doorless shack in the family’s courtyard, on a strip of dirt floor between a bed and a brick wall. She wore a thin sweater despite the January cold. When the blogger asked if she could understand him, she shook her head. A chain around her neck shackled her to the wall. The video quickly spread online, and immediately, ******** commenters wondered whether the woman had been sold to the man in Dongji and forced to have his children — a kind of trafficking that is a longstanding problem in China’s countryside. They demanded the government intervene. Instead, local officials issued a short statement brushing off the concerns: The woman was legally married to the man and had not been trafficked. She was chained up because she was mentally ill and sometimes hit people. Public outrage only grew. People wrote blog posts demanding to know why women could be treated like animals. Others printed fliers or visited the village to investigate for themselves. This was about more than trafficking, people said. It was another reason many young women were reluctant to get married or have children, because the government treated marriage as a license to abuse. The outcry rippled nationwide for weeks. Many observers called it the biggest moment for women’s rights in recent ******** history. The ******** ********** Party sees popular discontent as a challenge to its authority, but this was so intense that it seemed even the party would struggle to quash it. And yet, it did. To find out how, I tried to track what happened to the chained woman and those who spoke out for her. I found an expansive web of intimidation at home and abroad, involving mass surveillance, censorship and detentions — a campaign that continues to this day. The clampdown shows how rattled the authorities are by a growing movement demanding improvements to the role of women in ******** society. Though the party says it supports gender equality, under China’s leader, Xi Jinping, the government has described motherhood as a patriotic duty, jailed women’s rights activists and censored calls for tougher laws to protect women from mistreatment. Yet even as the crackdown forced women to hide their anger, it did not extinguish it. In secret, a new generation of activists has emerged, more determined than ever to continue fighting. Who Is the Chained Woman? At first sight, Dongji looks like any other village in China’s vast countryside. Two hours from the nearest city, it sits among sprawling wheat and rice fields in Jiangsu Province, half empty, most residents long departed to look for better lives elsewhere. But when a colleague and I visited recently, one house, with faded maroon double doors, appeared to be guarded by two men. A surveillance camera on a nearby pole pointed directly at the entrance. This was the street where the chained woman had lived. Officially, there was little reason that her house should still be under watch, since in the government’s telling, the case had been resolved. After widespread outrage over the government’s initial statement, in January 2022, officials promised a new investigation. Over the next month, four government offices released statements that at points conflicted with each other — offering different dates for when she was first chained, for example, or alternately suggesting that she had been homeless or gotten lost before arriving in Dongji. Finally, under intense public pressure, provincial officials in late February that year issued what they said was the definitive account. According to that report, the woman was named Xiaohuamei, or “Little Flower Plum.” (The government did not specify whether that was a nickname or a legal name.) She was born in Yagu, an impoverished village in Yunnan Province, in China’s southwest. As a teenager, she at times spoke or behaved in ways that were “abnormal,” the report said, and in 1998, when she was around 20, a fellow villager promised to help her seek treatment. Instead, that villager sold her for about $700. Trafficking women has been a big business in China for decades. A longstanding cultural preference for boys, exacerbated by the one-child policy, created a surplus of tens of millions of men, many of whom could not find wives. Poor, rural men in eastern China began buying women from the country’s even poorer western regions. Xiaohuamei was sold three times, finally to a man in Dongji — more than 2,000 miles from her hometown — who wanted a wife for his son, ***** Zhimin, the government said. Over the next 20 years, she gave birth to eight children, even as her mental health visibly deteriorated, the government said, citing interviews with Mr. ***** and villagers. When she first arrived in Dongji, she had been able to take care of herself; by the time she was found, she had trouble communicating. The government report did not say whether other villagers knew she had been trafficked. But self-styled charity bloggers had been visiting Mr. ***** and presenting him as a doting father since at least 2021. (The woman appeared in some videos, but unchained.) “My biggest dream is to slowly bring the children up into healthy adults,” Mr. ***** told one blogger, before the video of the shack emerged. Mr. *****’s social media posts portray him as a doting father Privately, though, Mr. ***** had been chaining the children’s mother around the neck and tying her with cloth ropes since 2017, the government said. He also did not take her to the hospital when she was sick. Censors deleted the bloggers’ videos of the family and of the woman in chains. In April 2023, Mr. ***** was sentenced to prison, along with five others accused of participating in the trafficking. The official story ended there. Step 1: Hide the Victim As we approached the house where the men were sitting, they jumped up and asked who we were. One made a phone call, while another blocked me from taking photos. Ten more people soon arrived, including police officers, propaganda officials and the village leader, who insisted that the scandal had been overblown. “Everything is very normal, extremely normal,” he said. When we asked where the woman was, officials said they believed that she didn’t want visitors. Then they escorted us to the train station. The chained woman may be choosing to stay out of the public eye. But the ******** government often silences victims of crimes or accidents that generate public anger. Relatives of people killed in plane crashes, coronavirus patients and survivors of domestic violence have all been shuffled out of sight, threatened or detained. Some weeks later, we tried to go back. This time, we visited a hospital where China’s state broadcaster said the woman was sent after the video went viral — her last known whereabouts. We tracked down Dr. Teng Xiaoting, a physician who had treated her. Dr. Teng said the woman was no longer there, but said she did not know where she had gone. Other locals we asked had no information either. But several people in neighboring villages said it was common knowledge that many women in the area, including in their own villages, had been bought from southwestern China. Some called it sad; others were matter-of-fact. Still, it was clear that talking about such trafficking could be risky. As we got closer to Dongji, a ****** Volkswagen began tailing us. Then, at least eight villagers surrounded us, calling us race traitors (we are both of ******** heritage) and at times pushing my colleague. One said that if we had been men, they would have beaten us. They eventually escorted us back to the main road after we called the police. Along the way, one man said it was in our own interest to be more cautious. “If you two were taken to the market and sold,” he said, “then what would you do?” Step 2: Silence Discussion After the woman’s story emerged in January 2022, the controls were tightest in Dongji. But the government sprang into action across the country to suppress the debate that followed. Legal scholars observed that the penalty for buying a trafficked woman — three years’ imprisonment — was less than that for selling an endangered bird. Others noted that judges have denied divorce applications from women known to have been abused or trafficked, and that the government has repeatedly ignored calls to criminalize marital *****. To halt such conversations, the police tracked down people like He Peirong, a veteran human rights activist, who had traveled 200 miles to the area around Dongji to try to look for other trafficked women. After she returned home, police officers knocked on her door, asking her why she had gone. They visited her roughly 20 times over the next month, forcing her to delete online posts about her trip and threatening to arrest her. They also named journalists she had been in contact with, to show they were watching her communications. They even took her to nearby Anhui Province on a forced “vacation” — a common tactic used to control dissidents’ movements. Similar crackdowns were taking place farther away. A lawyer named Lu Tingge, a resident of Hebei Province, about 600 miles from Dongji, said in an interview that a Jiangsu official had traveled to his city, urging him to withdraw a petition he’d submitted for more information about the case (he refused, but said he never received the information). Bookstores that put up displays recommending feminist reading were forced to remove them. Numerous online articles about the woman were censored; China Digital Times, a censorship tracker, archived at least 100 of them, though there were many more. The campaign even extended overseas. A woman living abroad said in an interview that the police called her parents in China after she posted photos of herself in chains online. Ms. He, the veteran activist, realized that the government was more worried about feminism than she had thought. She had been detained previously for other activism, but this monthslong pressure “far surpassed that,” she said. Step 3: Detain Those Who Persist To avoid arrest, Ms. He stopped posting about the case. She eventually left China for Thailand. Those who refused to stop, however, suffered the consequences. Two other women also traveled to Jiangsu after the video emerged, to visit the chained woman at the hospital. Identifying themselves on social media only by nicknames, Wuyi and Quanmei, they said they were just ordinary women showing solidarity. “Your sisters are coming,” Wuyi posted. They were barred from entering the hospital or the village, according to videos on Wuyi’s Weibo. So they drove around town instead, with messages about the woman scrawled on their car in lipstick. They quickly attracted enormous followings, their updates viewed hundreds of millions of times. Before long, they were detained by the local police. After their release several days later, Quanmei went quiet online. Wuyi, though, refused to be silenced. On Weibo, she said police had put a bag over her head and beat her. She shared a photo of her bruised arm, saying she was shocked that her small actions could elicit such ferocity. “Everything I always believed, everything the country had always taught me, all became lies,” she wrote. About two weeks later, Wuyi disappeared again. This time, the police detained her for eight months, according to an acquaintance. She was eventually released on bail and has not spoken publicly since. The Resistance Goes Into Hiding After Wuyi’s disappearance, the few voices still speaking out fell silent. But the activism has not evaporated, only moved underground. It includes people like Monica, a young woman who asked to be identified only by a first name. We met at her home, where she asked that I not bring my cellphone to avoid surveillance. Soft-spoken but assured, she recounted how police scrutiny forced her to embrace new tactics. When the chained woman story erupted, she joined an online group of several hundred people that decided to conduct research on the trafficking of women with mental disabilities in China. Within days, the police tracked down and interrogated participants. At around the same time, anonymous articles appeared online that doxxed some members of the group and labeled them “extreme feminists.” The group disbanded. But the intimidation only made Monica angrier. So a few months later, Monica and several others quietly regrouped, using an encrypted messaging platform. Rather than campaign publicly, they tried to impose pressure on the government behind the scenes. For weeks, they studied hundreds of court cases and news stories about women who had been abused or trafficked. They wrote a 20-page report explaining the chained woman episode and laying out suggestions for reform. In July 2022, they submitted it anonymously to a U.N. committee reviewing China’s record on disability rights. They later submitted similar reports to two other U.N. committees. A member of one of the committees, speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the reports were crucial sources of independent information from China. That person had not heard of the chained woman before. In May 2023, U.N. officials raised the chained woman’s story during a public meeting with ******** government representatives. The government said it had imprisoned Mr. ***** and that the woman was being cared for. Still, Monica felt proud — and emboldened: “You feel that you can still do some risky things.” “Feminism in China really is the most vocal and active movement. It’s also very hard to completely scatter or kill off,” she said. “I think the authorities are right to be worried.” Others have tried to subtly keep the chained woman’s legacy alive in other ways. An all-female band released a song called “So Who Has My Key?” An artist spent 365 days wearing a chain around her neck. A writer published a thinly disguised retelling of Snow White. In December, a woman whose family had reported her missing 13 years ago was found living with a man to whom she had borne two children. The authorities claimed the woman had a disability and the man had “taken her in” — the same language officials used in an early report about the chained woman. Social media users erupted, accusing the government of glossing over trafficking again. Then the censors stepped in and stifled that discussion, too. Siyi Zhao contributed research. 23. Split Fiction Is Not Coming to EA Play Pro Split Fiction Is Not Coming to EA Play Pro EA Play Pro has been a fairly useful subscription service exclusively available to PC players, allowing them to enjoy EA-published titles on day one. This includes major recent releases like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, FC25, and plenty more from the EA Sports lineup. PC subscribers assumed that Split Fiction from Hazelight Studios would also be part of the day-one lineup for EA Play Pro as it’s published by Electronic Arts, but this seems to be a rare exception. Split Fiction Skips EA Play Pro Since there was no information about Split Fiction on EA Play Pro ahead of its release, a user on the EA forums raised the question of its availability on the service. An EA community manager responded in the thread, confirming that Split Fiction will not be available on the service at launch. Screenshot by Prima Games The confirmation led to some obvious pushback from users subscribed to EA Play Pro, who were expecting to play the EA published title at launch. Multiple users in the thread have expressed their frustration with the unclear messaging about the subscription benefits, and are claiming they will cancel their subscriptions because of this exclusion. This is the first major title published by EA that isn’t featured in the service at launch, and the wording on their websites now states that “select” games will be added to the service. However, if you head over to the EA Play Info Hub (which was published 13 days ago, as of writing), it clearly states that EA Play subscribers get unlimited access to “latest EA titles as soon as they are released, including premium editions and deluxe content“. Here is a screenshot of that FAQ below: Screenshot by Prima Games The developers at Hazelight Studios and Electronic Arts have not commented on this yet, and we will update this if they do. For now, EA Play Pro subscribers will have to purchase Split Fiction on the EA App, or Steam to gain access to the game. It’s possible that the game isn’t on this service because of the friend’s pass system, which grants access to another user for free once invited by the player who purchased the title, so they can play together. Either way, Split Fiction launches soon, so make sure you have it pre-loaded ahead of its release in your region. Prima Games is supported by our audience. 24. MWC 2025: Smartphone users upgrade devices faster as AI cranks up MWC 2025: Smartphone users upgrade devices faster as AI cranks up The latest Assurant study of the secondary device market has found that across 2024 as a whole, artificial intelligence (AI) is potentially emerging as a higher priority in consumers’ decisions to upgrade devices in 2025, as newer, 5G-capable smartphones became the top turned-in devices in the second half of 2024. According to Assurant’s 2024 mobile trade-in and upgrade industry trends report, which incorporates data from its Device IQ analytics platform, as well as broader industry insights, consumers who turned in their devices in 2024 received greater value from trade-in programmes, with US consumers receiving a total of $4.5bn in value, a 5% increase compared with 2023. Analysing trends across the 12-month *******, the data showed that in the first quarter of the year, consumers were holding onto their devices longer than in the previous quarter, with the average age of turned-in devices exceeding 3.6 years. Drilling deeper, there was also a shift in Android device age after the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy 24, going from 3.67 years in the first quarter to 3.38 in the third quarter. Similarly, the average age of Apple iPhones reached 3.78 years in the second quarter, declining to 3.63 years in the fourth quarter on the launch of the iPhone 16. The analyst suggested that the reduction in average age coinciding with AI-enabled device launches could indicate “early adopters” turning in newer generation 5G devices for the latest AI-enabled smartphones. For 2024 overall, there was a noticeable shift in most turned-in devices. The study found that while the iPhone 11 remained the most frequently turned-in device from trade-in and upgrade programmes for the year, it was overtaken in the second half of the year by the iPhone 13. For the second consecutive year, the Samsung Galaxy S21 was the most turned-in Android device. However, the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G became the second most turned-in Android device for the year and the top Android model traded in during the second half. As AI starts to deliver meaningful capabilities and more devices become available, we may see more consumers trading in their newer 5G smartphones to take advantage of emerging AI-enabled capabilities Biju Nair, Assurant Assurant noted that its Connected consumer trend report revealed that nearly half of US consumers expect their next smartphone to support AI features, services and tools, with roughly 20% considering AI to be “very important” to their purchase decision. It added that with nearly 11% of US consumers reporting a recent upgrade and approximately 16% planning to upgrade within the next six months, as many as a third of US consumers are expected to own an AI-enabled device by mid-year. Moreover, Assurant noted that when data from its “connected decade” research is combined with the notable decline in the average age of Apple and Android devices turned in through trade-in and upgrade programmes towards the latter half of the year, it appeared that demand for the new generation of AI-enabled devices could accelerate upgrade cycles. “At the beginning of 2024, consumers prioritised getting the most out of their existing devices, but with major advancements in AI, and trends we are seeing in terms of device age towards the end of the year, that may be shifting,” commented Biju Nair, president of global connected living and international at Assurant. “Though it is still too early to tell, as AI starts to deliver meaningful capabilities and more devices become available, we may see more consumers trading in their newer 5G smartphones to take advantage of emerging AI-enabled capabilities,” he added. 25. *** drops antitrust probe into Microsoft and OpenAI tie-up *** drops antitrust probe into Microsoft and OpenAI tie-up Jaap Arriens | Nurphoto | Getty Images Britain dropped its probe into Microsoft’s partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Wednesday, saying the software giant did not have the level of control over the AI company that would warrant further investigation. The partnership came under antitrust scrutiny in Britain and the U.S. last year following the startup’s boardroom battle that led to the exit and return of CEO Sam Altman. Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said although Microsoft did acquire material influence over OpenAI in 2019, it had not since gained de facto control and therefore it did not qualify for review under the ***’s merger control regime. A Microsoft spokesperson said the partnership with OpenAI and its continued evolution “promote competition, innovation, and responsible AI development”. “We welcome the CMA’s conclusion, after careful and prudent consideration of the commercial realities, to close its investigation,” the spokesperson said.
