(WFLA) — The southbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Sarasota County reopened overnight after officials said two tractor-trailers collided Wednesday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said. According to North Port Fire Rescue, two semis crashed at mile marker 174 southbound near the Kings Highway interchange. NPFR crews cleared the accident, but lanes on the interstate remain closed due to damage to the road. Motorcyclist killed after colliding with 2 vehicles on I-75 The Florida Highway Patrol said a crane semi was in the outside lane approaching the overpass for Berkshire Street and slammed into a tractor-trailer that was hauling a flatbed trailer with its hazard lights on. Both semis were on an uphill grade and had a clear line of sight while approaching the overpass. However, the tractor-trailer hauling the flatbed collided with the crane semi, which was traveling at a reduced speed. The ****** caused the crane semi to rotate and flip on its side, blocking all of the southbound lanes. Florida Highway Patrol Florida Highway Patrol Florida Highway Patrol Florida Highway Patrol North Port Fire Rescue After the collision between the semis, another vehicle collided with the ****** debris, FHP said. There are no life-threatening injuries at this time. In a 9 p.m. update, the Florida Department of Transportation said one lane of traffic was reopened as crews continued to work overnight. 4. Red Pepper and Feta Pie with Buttery Phyllo Red Pepper and Feta Pie with Buttery Phyllo Instructions Prepare the dough: In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the flour, oil, vinegar and salt. Mix well. Gradually add the water while kneading by hand or with a dough hook, until the dough becomes smooth, slightly elastic, and medium-firm. If needed, adjust with a bit more flour or water. Cover and let rest for 20 minutes while you prepare the filling. Make the filling: In a pot, boil the chopped peppers in about 1 liter of water over medium-low heat for 15 minutes, until soft. Drain and discard the water. In the same pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the peppers over medium heat until they begin to brown slightly. Remove from heat, add the feta, eggs, salt, and pepper, and mix well. Let the filling cool completely. Assemble the pie: Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll them into small ******. On a lightly floured surface, roll out 4 dough ****** into round sheets, each about 15-20 cm in diameter. Brush each sheet with melted butter and stack them. Roll the stacked layers out again into a single large sheet, slightly larger than your baking pan. Butter a 28 cm round baking pan and place the first phyllo layer inside, covering the bottom and sides, with some overhang. Spread half of the filling evenly over it. Repeat the layering process with another 4 dough ****** to create a second phyllo sheet, this time matching the size of the pan. Lay it over the filling and spread the remaining filling on top. Roll out the final 4 dough ****** to form the top layer and place it over the filling. Fold the overhanging bottom phyllo inward to create a thin decorative border around the pie. Brush the surface with melted butter and score into portions. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake for about 1 hour, until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving warm. 5. WA officials monitoring volcanic activity, update eruption response plan WA officials monitoring volcanic activity, update eruption response plan The Brief A recent cluster of earthquakes in Washington has local, tribal, state, and federal agencies working to establish a new coordination plan for Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens. Seismometers are being closely tracked, as the state is home to volcanoes with the second and third-highest eruption risks in the U.S. SEATTLE, Wash. – As Washington nears the 45th anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption, officials are keeping a close eye on Mount Adams after a series of earthquakes were recorded between September 2024 and January 2025. Although seismic activity has since ceased, the unusual cluster of 12 earthquakes prompted discussions among local, tribal, state, and federal agencies. Their goal is to establish a new coordination plan for Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens, the first update since 2014; which officials are currently updating to ensure accurate contact information and agency responsibilities. What they’re saying Brian Terbush, earthquake and volcano program manager at the Washington State Emergency Management Division, emphasized the importance of monitoring changes. “Monitoring a volcano is like going for your annual checkup to the doctor,” Terbush said. “The better monitored a volcano is, the better you can track changes over time to see if it’s doing something unusual. The more monitoring we have, the better we can track any unusual activity.” According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Mount Adams typically experiences one earthquake every two to three years. However, in September alone, an unusual increase in earthquakes were recorded— six more followed through January, prompting the USGS to install temporary seismometers. “We had six earthquakes in the month of September, which was different than what we generally see,” said Alex Iezzi, a research geophysicist with the USGS. Once the temporary seismometers were placed, activity stopped, but scientists remain cautious. Officials plan to install five permanent monitoring stations this summer to ensure continuous observation. Big picture view Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens are among the five active volcanoes in Washington, with St. Helens and Mount Rainier ranking as the second and third highest eruption risks in the U.S. “The USGS findings don’t mean the volcano is going to erupt or that it’s in a state of unrest,” Terbush said. “It means something is different, and we are going to watch more closely.” The newly proposed coordination plan will involve agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, the Cascades Volcano Observatory, NOAA, and the National Weather Service. These groups play a critical role in hazard monitoring, alert systems, and assessing air quality in case of an eruption. However, federal layoffs could impact these efforts. “All of these layoffs could have impacts,” Terbush said. “But it’s really important to learn your hazards and how they might impact your life if they erupt someday—because they will.” Once the updated plan is finalized, officials will conduct exercises to test its effectiveness, with a goal of completing the process within the next year. What’s next While the updated plan focuses on Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens, Pierce County is handling its own hazard response for Mount Rainier. Officials there conducted the largest lahar evacuation drill last year. The permanent monitoring stations for Mount Adams are expected to be installed this summer. 8. Mortgage and refinance rates today, March 6, 2025: Rates drop significantly Mortgage and refinance rates today, March 6, 2025: Rates drop significantly Fixed mortgage rates have decreased again this week. According to Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed interest rate is down for the seventh week in a row — it has declined by 13 basis points this week to 6.63%. The 15-year fixed rate has dropped by 15 basis points to 5.79%. Interest rates have been inching down, but these are more significant drops than usual. It may be a good time to kick off the home-buying process and shop for mortgage lenders. Dig deeper: Is 2025 a good time to buy a house? Here are today’s mortgage refinance interest rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.34% 20-year fixed: 6.02% 15-year fixed: 5.64% 5/1 ARM: 6.27% 7/1 ARM: 6.33% 30-year VA: 5.78% 15-year VA: 5.57% 5/1 VA: 5.94% 30-year FHA: 5.79% 15-year FHA: 5.30% As with the purchase mortgage rates, these are national averages we’ve rounded to the nearest hundredth. Refinance rates can be higher than purchase mortgage rates, but that isn’t always the case. Yahoo Finance has a free mortgage payment calculator to help you see how various mortgage rates will impact your monthly payments. Our calculator goes even deeper by including factors like homeowners insurance and property taxes in your calculation. You can even add private mortgage insurance costs and HOA dues if they apply to you. These monthly expenses, along with your mortgage principal and interest rate, will give you a realistic idea of what your monthly payment could be. A mortgage interest rate is a fee for borrowing money from your lender, expressed as a percentage. There are two basic types of mortgage rates: fixed and adjustable rates. A fixed-rate mortgage locks in your rate for the entire life of your loan. For example, if you get a 30-year mortgage with a 6% interest rate, your rate will stay at 6% for the entire 30 years. (Unless you refinance or sell the home.) An adjustable-rate mortgage keeps your rate the same for the first few years, then changes it periodically. Let’s say you get a 5/1 ARM with an introductory rate of 6%. Your rate would be 6% for the first five years and then the rate would increase or decrease once per year for the last 25 years of your term. Whether your rate goes up or down depends on several factors, such as the economy and U.S. housing market. At the beginning of your mortgage term, most of your monthly payment goes toward interest. As time passes, less of your payment goes toward interest, and more goes toward the mortgage principal or the amount you originally borrowed. Dig deeper: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage — Which should you choose? Two categories determine mortgage rates: ones you can control and ones you cannot control. What factors can you control? First, you can compare the best mortgage lenders to find the one that gives you the lowest rate and fees. Second, lenders typically extend lower rates to people with higher credit scores, lower debt-to-income (DTI) ratios, and considerable down payments. If you can save more or pay down debt before securing a mortgage, a lender will probably give you a better interest rate. What factors can you not control? In short, the economy. The list of ways the economy impacts mortgage rates is long, but here are the basic details. If the economy — think employment rates, for example — is struggling, mortgage rates go down to encourage borrowing, which helps boost the economy. If the economy is strong, mortgage rates go up to temper spending. With all other things being equal, mortgage refinance rates are usually a little higher than purchase rates. So don’t be surprised if your refinance rate is higher than you may have expected. Two of the most common mortgage terms are 30-year and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages. Both lock in your rate for the entire loan term. A 30-year mortgage is popular because it has relatively low monthly payments. But it comes with a higher interest rate than shorter terms, and because you’re accumulating interest for three decades, you’ll pay a lot of interest in the long run. A 15-year mortgage can be great because it has a lower rate than you’ll get with longer terms, so you’ll pay less in interest over the years. You’ll also pay off your mortgage much faster. But your monthly payments will be higher because you’re paying off the same loan amount in half the time. Basically, 30-year mortgages are more affordable from month to month, while 15-year mortgages are cheaper in the long run. According to 2023 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data, some of the banks with the lowest median mortgage rates are Citibank, Wells Fargo, and USAA. However, it’s a good idea to shop around for the best rate with not just banks, but also credit unions and companies specializing in mortgage lending. Yes, 2.75% is a fantastic mortgage rate. You’re unlikely to get a 2.75% rate in today’s market unless you take on an assumable mortgage from a seller who locked in this rate in 2020 or 2021, when rates were at all-time lows. According to Freddie Mac, the lowest-ever 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 2.65%. This was the national average in January 2021. It is extremely unlikely that rates will dip this low again anytime soon. Some experts say it’s worth refinancing when you can lock in a rate that’s 2% less than your current mortgage rate. Others say 1% is the magic number. It all depends on what your financial goals are when refinancing and when your break-even point would be after paying refinance closing costs. The Great Sneeze will have you questioning why we even sneeze in the first place after a humongous one throws a whole art gallery into disarray – in particular, the Caspar David Friedrich exhibition turns topsy-turvy thanks to a sneeze that wields the power of a thousand typhoons. I mean, I doubt a single sneeze can actually destroy a museum, but it’s annoying nonetheless – just imagine all the snot that might just go along with it. That’s no way to preserve a priceless artwork, is it? It’s up to you to put everything back in its rightful place. 11. ‘He does not regret killing my mum,’ judge told ‘He does not regret killing my mum,’ judge told The daughter of a violent, abusive man spared a conviction for fatally stabbing her kind-hearted mother says she knows he does not regret his actions. Samar Shlemoon, 42, was stabbed three times in the chest after being strangled by her 60-year-old husband in their Sydney home in November 2020. Her death came nine days after the delusionally jealous man threatened his wife in bed with a knife, and then belted his daughters when they came to their mother’s aid. Soneevia Al-Qas Soomo told the NSW Supreme Court on Friday she had long been fearful of her father Alam Al-Qas Soomo because he was violent. “I know this man doesn’t regret what he did,” she said, in a statement read to the court by a relative, as her mother’s killer watched from the dock. The young woman said she thought of her mother’s death each day, wondering what she could have done. “I didn’t get a chance to hug her one last time,” she said. “I wish they had buried me next to her so I could stay with her forever.” Sonia Al-Qas Soomo described her mother as the “most wonderful woman” and revealed “his family keep saying it’s our fault” she died. While unfortunately not uncommon for domestic violence homicides to rob the children of both mother and father, the Al-Qas Soono children were left with nothing but each other, the court was told. Soneevia, Sonia and their parents migrated to Australia from Syria in 2019, having fled the Iraq War in 2003. “These … children were here effectively only with their parents, they arrived here with a foreign language … and precious little other support,” crown prosecutor Mark Hay said. “What Mr Al-Qas Soomo may appreciate one day is the damage done to his children by this act.” Mental health experts deemed the killer unfit to be tried after diagnosing him with a psychotic disorder. That disorder was characterised by a delusional belief that his wife had been serially and in a promiscuous way unfaithful to him since they married in 1995, the court was told. His deep-seated and ingrained suspicion of her infidelity was coupled with large amounts of alcohol daily. “Mr (Al-Qas) Soomo was very controlling of his wife,” Justice Stephen Campbell said in November “Because of his jealousy and mistrust of his wife, he would lock her in their home in Syria at least a few times a month, deny her funds to provide for the children, and denigrate her and humiliate her in vile ways by putting out his ********** on her head or tipping ****** on her after she had showered.” In a special verdict, the judge found Al-Qas Soomo committed manslaughter with his disorder not stopping his awareness that killing his wife or abusing his children was wrong. Only the day before, he discussed the need to change his abusive behaviour with his daughter. Al-Qas Soomo, who has been in custody since 2020, is expected to learn on March 14 the minimum length of time he must remain in custody. A further review by a mental health tribunal will occur before release. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) Lifeline 13 11 14 beyondblue 1300 22 4636 Source link #regret #killing #mum #judge #told Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  12. Which places had the most violations in February? Which places had the most violations in February? Summit County Public Health inspected hundreds of food-serving facilities in February, including restaurants, nursing homes, grocery stores and gas stations, according to health data obtained by an Akron Beacon Journal database. Food establishments are inspected one to four times per year, depending on the likelihood of a foodborne illness. Inspectors determine whether or not these establishments are compliant with the Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code, which ensures food is safe for public consumption. Establishments with multiple uncorrected violations can have their licenses revoked or suspended, or in a severe case, the establishment could be forced to permanently close. Which Summit County establishments had the most critical violations in February? Jaipur Junction, 180 Streetsboro Road West, Hudson: Inspectors found 10 critical violations including employees not washing hands when required, unclean food-contact surfaces (corrected during inspection) and a presence of live pests/insects. Azteca Restaurante, 1779 East Market Street, Akron: Inspectors found nine critical violations including a lack of a posted handwashing sign in the men’s restroom, food employees not wearing a hair restraint and the plumbing system not being adequately maintained. Main Xin, 4439 Kent Road, Stow: Inspectors found eight critical violations including a handwashing sink not being fully accessible at all times (corrected during inspection), improper handwashing practices and food not being cold held at the proper temperature. Don Jose, 1562 Akron-Peninsula Road, Akron: Inspectors found eight critical violations including an inaccessible handwashing sink, food not being cold held at proper temperature and food not be properly dated. Alejandro’s Amigos Taqueria, 4147 Bridgewater Parkway, Stow: Inspectors found eight critical violations including improper handwashing practices, improper use of toxic materials and handwashing sink used for purposes other than handwashing (corrected during inspection). Cantina en la Ocho, 10230 Northfield Road, Northfield: Inspectors found seven critical violations including the improper disposal of expired food (corrected during inspection), ready-to-eat foods not being properly date marked and unclean food-contact surfaces. The Farmer’s Rail, 98 N Main Street, Hudson: Inspectors found seven critical violations including an inaccessible handwashing sink, food not being cold held at the proper temperatures and food not being protected from contamination by separation. Coventry Diner, 3333 Manchester Road Suite 17, Akron: Inspectors found seven critical violations including unclean food-contact surfaces (corrected during inspection), improper use of a poisonous substance (corrected during inspection) and warewashing machine not equipped with proper materials. Tulum ******** Restaurant, 8910 Hadden Road, Twinsburg: Inspectors found seven critical violations including consumer not being properly advised of the risk of consuming raw or undercooked animal foods, inaccurate air and water thermometers and the improper labeling of poisonous material containers. El Torito Tacos, 10683 Ravenna Road Unit #3, Twinsburg: Inspectors found seven critical violations including unclean food-contact surfaces (corrected during inspection), improper labeling of poisonous material containers (corrected during inspection) and ready-to-eat foods being improperly dated (corrected during inspection). What are the types of violations? There are two types of violations health inspectors look for: critical and non-critical violations. Critical violations are those violations that, if left uncorrected, are “more likely to contribute to food contamination or illness,” according to the Summit County Health Department. Examples of critical violations include the improper cooking, reheating or refrigeration of food items. Non-critical violations are not directly related to foodborne illnesses, but they could still impact the restaurant and lead to critical violations if not corrected. Examples include a lack of facility cleanliness and maintenance. What types of inspections are there? The following are the four types of inspections, according to Summit County Public Health: Standard: This inspection is unannounced to the restaurant. An inspector will conduct a complete inspection covering all items in the regulations for compliance. Critical Control Point (CCP): These inspections can be scheduled or unannounced. The inspector spends time discussing the facility’s food processes and educates the facility on proper procedures. Follow-up Inspection: This is an inspection for the specific purpose of re-inspecting items that were not in compliance at the time of the standard inspection. These inspections are scheduled. Complaint: This is an unannounced inspection conducted as a result of a complaint received by the health department. The specifics of the complaint will be evaluated and discussed with the person in charge. 15. Trump may have already planted the seeds of his political collapse Trump may have already planted the seeds of his political collapse Over the last six weeks, President Trump has been spending political capital like a drunk at a casino who insists he’s got “a system.” If history is any predictor, his second term trajectory may already be set — right off a cliff, pedal to the floor. Too soon to say that? Consider former President Joe Biden, who, in his first weeks in office, reversed Trump’s border policies and unleashed another flood of pandemic relief cash. These moves ultimately helped create his two biggest political headaches: a migrant crisis and runaway inflation so bad that even Dollar Tree had to raise its prices. Then Biden made it worse by shrugging the problems off. Immigration, his administration argued, was “cyclical,” and inflation was merely “transitory.” Neither explanation turned out to be accurate. His approval ratings tanked immediately upon his disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal and never recovered. Now it’s Trump’s turn to step on a rake. His approval ratings just went underwater, meaning he hit this particular milestone even faster than Biden. According to a new Ipsos poll, three in five Americans think the cost of living — you know, the issue that likely won Trump the 2024 election — is “going in the wrong direction.” As you might recall, Trump promised to bring down food prices on day one. Well, here we are, and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins is telling the public to deal with high egg prices by raising their own chickens. I understand the appeal. Raising chickens — at least in a world without bird flu — might sound charming, and I bet many environmentally conscious liberals would find it quite nostalgic. But for most urban and suburban Americans, this is like the secretary of transportation suggesting we tackle rising gas prices by riding horses to work. If a Democrat had said anything this absurd, Fox News would be hosting an emergency town hall titled “Biden’s Barnyard Blunder: The War on Your Wallet.” But somehow, this little nugget of genius has barely registered. Maybe people are too busy choosing between a carton of eggs and keeping the lights on. Meanwhile, Trump seems hell-bent on seeing just how much economic misery voters can stomach. His latest stroke of brilliance? Slapping tariffs on Canada and Mexico — because nothing fixes inflation quite like boosting prices. Planning to build a house? Brace yourself for soaring lumber costs. And in case that wasn’t enough, his mass deportation plan threatens to gut the construction workforce, sending labor costs through the roof. It’s a perfect one-two punch: fewer workers, pricier materials and a housing market already on life support. Don’t worry, though — rather than acknowledge the flawed approach, Republicans are already laying the groundwork for the inevitable fallout of Trump’s policies by claiming that Americans are willing to suffer high prices for Trump. Right. Keep telling yourselves that. Speaking of scams, Trump just announced something called a “strategic crypto reserve.” I don’t know what that is, but I do know if you put “crypto” and “Trump” in the same sentence, somebody is getting fleeced. And it ain’t him or his ****-cat friends in the tech industry. This brings us to Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency. On paper, cutting waste sounds great. In reality? A foreign-born billionaire with a ketamine habit and a collection of surprise baby mamas who is firing American workers en masse is the kind of thing that plays terribly — especially when some of the laid-off employees are Trump voters who somehow believed he would only go after other people. That’s right. It turns out that the so-called “deep state” includes regular folks, many of them military veterans, who don’t love being laid off by a billionaire space cadet or one of his Gen Z minions. Then there’s the looming foreign policy catastrophe: Trump has made an art form of alienating allies, but his decision to pause military aid and intelligence sharing for Ukraine could have severe consequences — like, say, Russia steamrolling right over Ukraine. A majority of Americans, per Ipsos, actually support Ukraine fighting back with U.S. weapons. So Trump starts off in a ********* position, and that’s before his policies risk pushing Ukraine toward a very public collapse (a scenario one can only hope doesn’t unfold). If Ukraine falls and the headlines are dominated by reports of Russian war crimes and images of tanks rolling into Kyiv, Trump’s already fraught position could unravel. In short, Trump is charging ahead like a man convinced he has an ironclad mandate. He’s making the kind of big, flashy moves that typically blow up in spectacular manner. After all, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. He has slipped out of tight spots many times before, so maybe he’ll pull it off again. Or maybe, just maybe, his bill is finally coming due. Matt K. 17. Liberal MP Julian Leeser questions the future existence of *********** Human Rights Commission Liberal MP Julian Leeser questions the future existence of *********** Human Rights Commission Liberal MP Julian Leeser has delivered a furious attack on the country’s controversial human rights body, saying its “very existence” should be called into question for failing to defend Jewish Australians. Mr Leeser, a Jewish member of parliament, delivered the shock call in a speech to the Jewish National Fund on Thursday, claiming the agency was “infected” with activists and had “turned a blind eye” to the explosion of racist anti-Semitic attacks on Jewish Australians since the ****** terror assault on Israel on October 7, 2023. “The AHRC is flailing and failing,” he said. “If the AHRC cannot fulfil its purpose, we must question its very existence. It has a budget of $43m and 200 staff, but it has turned a blind eye to Jewish Australians. “We need to rid the AHRC of the politics and the activists that have infected it. “And like any other organisation, if the AHRC cannot fulfil its mandate we should be asking whether it remains fit for purpose.” Camera IconLiberal MP Julian Leeser says the *********** Human Rights Commission is ‘flailing and failing’. Supplied Credit: News Corp Australia Mr Leeser said the AHRC had failed to condemn the Sydney Opera House protest – where a crowd of men chanted “where are the Jews” – that happened two days after the October 7 attack He also said AHRC race discrimination commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman had refused to acknowledge the phrase “from the river to the sea” represented a statement of Jew hatred. The phrase, often chanted at pro-Palestine rallies, is taken by some to mean the elimination of the state of Israel. Universities Australia, in its statement on racism from late February, argues calls for the elimination of Israel are anti-Semitic. “Criticism of the policies and practices of the Israeli government or state is not in and of itself anti-Semitic,” the statement reads. “However, criticism of Israel can be anti-Semitic when it is grounded in harmful tropes, stereotypes or assumptions and when it calls for the elimination of the state of Israel or all Jews or when it holds Jewish individuals or communities responsible for Israel’s actions.” The AHRC’s mandate is to monitor Australia’s performance in meeting its international human rights commitments, according to its website. “We provide advice and recommendations so that these standards are reflected in our national laws, as well as policies and programs developed by government,” the AHRC states. AHRC president Hugh de Kretser, responding to Mr Leeser’s speech, said the commission had responded in “many ways” to the rise in anti-Semitism. “In addition to calling out and condemning the sharp rise in antisemitism, the AHRC has been responding in many ways,” he told NewsWire on Friday. “We provide vital access to justice services for Jewish people affected by racism and racial vilification. We continue to provide expert advice on reforms to tackle racism including on doxxing, the display of Nazi symbols, addressing online hate and misinformation and vilification laws. Camera IconMr Leeser represents the NSW seat of Beroowra in federal parliament. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia “We are conducting a landmark national study on the impact of racism at universities and we recently released our National Anti-Racism Framework which outlines a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach for eliminating racism. “The Jewish community in Australia, and all communities, must be safe and must feel safe and able to express their identity without prejudice and hatred.” NewsWire pressed the AHRC on whether it regarded the phrase “from the river to the sea” to be anti-Semitic, but did not receive a response. Mr Leeser, who represents the NSW seat of Berowra in outer Sydney, warned that Australia’s long inheritance of freedom to live free of fear was at now at risk for Jewish and non-Jewish children. “I have come to realise the work of our time is to protect Australia from the ravages and extremism that yearns to infect our national life,” he said. “It’s to protect our children, all our children from the sickness and hatred of anti-Semitism. “As I say that, I want to affirm that I believe the vast middle of this country wants no truck with those who peddle hatred.” Source link #Liberal #Julian #Leeser #questions #future #existence #*********** #Human #Rights #Commission Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. ‘More elusive than the snow leopard’ ‘More elusive than the snow leopard’ Rare shots caught on trail cameras in Northern India have provided encouraging evidence that a special animal species is calling the western Himalayas home. In Himachal Pradesh, India, a Pallas’s Cat — or manul — was documented walking along a mountainous trail, according to the Outdoors. The small wild cat is known to inhabit areas further north in Mongolia and China, but its habitat range may be increasing, which is a good sign for the sensitive species. Snow Leopard Trust posted the photos to Facebook, writing that “these small felines are perhaps more elusive than the snow leopard, which makes long-term studies difficult.” According to Outdoors, the researchers obtained footage of the animals from three camera trap sites at elevations reaching up to 13,500 feet. While the sighting of the small feline was a welcome surprise, finding it at such an elevation was not. Pallas’s cats’ thick fur coats and short, sturdy legs make them perfect mountain dwellers. They prefer to live at higher elevations, using their expert camouflage markings to blend in with their surroundings. Unlike other cat species, they have distinctive round pupils, which give them better eyesight to hunt in their preferred prowling times of dawn and dusk. Their wide-set and flat ears are another unique feature, allowing their outline to be less noticeable by skittish prey. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Tracking and monitoring an elusive species is difficult at any elevation, but with the Pallas’s cats’ preferred terrain, documenting their lifestyles could provide an extra challenge. As conservationists documented in an article published on ResearchGate: “Additional ecological research is critical, but our inability to efficiently monitor the species across its vast range and reliably detect population trends and distributional changes is arguably the most important gap in our understanding.” Luckily, with the advent of drones, filming species at higher topographies is now more feasible. Scientists have already used this innovative method to study snow leopards in Kazakhstan and Grévy’s zebras in Kenya. The Pallas’s cat has chosen some great real estate to invest in and will hopefully make for a useful addition to its new ecosystem. India is home to many exotic cat species, including the Bengal tiger, fishing cat, Asiatic lion, and several species of leopard. It is even home to the world’s smallest wild cat, the rusty-spotted cat. Although manuls are not an endangered species, they are reclusive by nature, and small communities are at risk of localized population decline. Some factors that contribute to their declining numbers are food source depletion, accidental capture, and loss of habitat. This makes the new photos all the more encouraging, proving that the Pallas’s cat is adaptable and is spreading to new parts of the world. Giddey, White deliver the Bulls’ magic in Orlando Giddey, White deliver the Bulls’ magic in Orlando Josh Giddey has come up just short of his 14th NBA triple-double but did enough to help Chicago to a comeback victory in Orlando. The Bulls’ star *********** guard had 19 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists in a 125-123 triumph over the Magic (29-35), who have lost five on the bounce. It was Giddey’s 75th career double-double, and sixth in seven games. Coby White scored a career-high 44 points and was seven of 15 from three-point range. He scored Chicago’s last nine points on two layups, a dunk and a triple. Three other Bulls (25-38) reached double figures, including Tre Jones, who had 20 points. Giddey’s fellow in-form compatriot Dyson Daniels helped Atlanta to a 124-118 win over Indiana. The Hawks stormed home by winning the fourth quarter by 14, with Daniels finishing with 17 points, four rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal. Trae Young had 22 points and 16 assists, Onyeka Okongwu added 20 points and 13 rebounds and Georges Niang scored 12 of his 24 points in the final term for Atlanta (29-34), who had lost five in a row against Indiana since the 2022-23 season. Pascal Siakam had 35 points for the Pacers (35-26), who were playing without two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton (hip) for only the second time this season. Earlier on Friday (AEDT), Houston beat the Pelicans 109-97 in New Orleans and Golden State came from 22 points down to defeat hosts Brooklyn 121-119. Stephen Curry led the way for the Warriors with 40 points, which included a turnaround heave from just inside halfcourt among his seven three-pointers. In Boston, Jayson Tatum had 35 points and seven rebounds and the Celtics powered past Philadelphia 123-105. It was Tatum’s 24th game this season with at least 30 points even though he sat out the fourth quarter as undermanned Boston (45-18) – missing Jaylen Brown (knee), Jrue Holiday (finger), Al Horford (toe) and Kristaps Porzingis (illness) – won for the ninth time in 11 games. 22. How man plans to buy all units How man plans to buy all units LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Tensions are high at a Las Vegas condominium complex as one man tries to buy all the units and convert them to rental apartments. Several remaining property owners have refused to sell their units to the majority owner. “I’m stressed out,” Robert Rice told the 8 News Now Investigators. “I don’t know what to do. That’s why I’m glad you’re here to maybe give us some light.” $10K bill, 5 kids, no water service: Las Vegas family fights eviction Rice said he used his life savings to purchase the studio on the Las Vegas west side in 2019, but shortly after, he felt pressured to sell the unit. Rice is not alone. “We are being bullied,” Kammie Thomaseec said. Tensions are high at a Las Vegas condominium complex as one man tries to buy all the units and convert them to rental apartments. Several remaining property owners have refused to sell their units to the majority owner. (KLAS) Thomaseec and her husband, Larry, own one unit as an investment, they said. “It’s been pure hell since the day I met this guy,” Dan Tschetter property owner said as he referred to the majority owner. The majority owner, Daniel Wright, agreed to an interview with the 8 News Now Investigators. “I have nothing to hide down here,” Wright said. “Some people don’t like the big landlord or whatever like that. I have a business plan. I’m trying to prove myself.” Wright said he and his companies began purchasing units at Bonanza Park more than a decade ago, and now own more than 100 of the 132 units. “The plan is to take over the whole complex. Everybody has known that plan here,” Wright said. “They’ve known about me for years. They’ve known about the plan for years. This is not a secret.” The majority owner, Daniel Wright, agreed to an interview with the 8 News Now Investigators. Wright said he and his companies began purchasing units at Bonanza Park more than a decade ago, and now own more than 100 of the 132 units. (KLAS) With each unit Wright owns, he gets a vote. After there was an issue with insurance coverage, due to a fire at one of the buildings in 2021, homeowners paid hefty assessments. Rice said he paid $9,000. Wright said the homeowners association was responsible for paying for repairs to community property. Las Vegas housing nightmare: No working toilet, no hot water One of Wright’s most recent goals was to dissolve the HOA entirely. “Everything was voted on through the HOA. Everything was voted on through the ownership. That’s where we’re at at this point,” Wright said. “Each unit gets a vote. If owners wanted to buy more units, they could buy more units.” Sonya Meriweather, the ombudsman for common interest communities in the state of Nevada, said the state does not dictate how many votes an owner gets. “Just by ownership of a house, you have the governing documents that give you some protection but it also gives you some obligations also,” Meriweather told the 8 News Now Investigators. A common interest community can be terminated with 80% of the votes, according to Nevada state law, which Wright insisted he is following. “I can see where they might feel pushed around because the overwhelming vote, their vote doesn’t count for much in this complex but that’s what an HOA is there for, to protect,” Wright said. “There’s certain rules and regulations and sometimes they’re in favor of the little guy, sometimes they’re in favor of the big guy and if they don’t like the rules, it’s a free country, they can move somewhere else, they could buy more units, they could band together, they could do a lot of things.” Some of the remaining property owners claimed Wright was not offering them enough for their units, while Wright insisted he is offering fair market value. 25. Chain closes another restaurant in un-’educated’ Boise. Yo, Idaho, heard of a burrito? Chain closes another restaurant in un-’educated’ Boise. Yo, Idaho, heard of a burrito? As the Boise area’s population has exploded, so has its restaurant scene. Chefs are earning accolades. Ethnic restaurants have multiplied. Still, we not always be so smart about food, Idaho. Regional chain Gyro Shack just closed its second Treasure Valley restaurant in less than six months, with plans to reopen it as a ******** drive-thru. The reason? At least in part? Gyros can be, like, confusing. “Even in the Boise market, with it growing as much as it is, 40% to 50% of our customers don’t know what a gyro is,” confessed Seth Brink, president of Arete Food Group. “So we still get those questions all the time … That’s the gyro challenge.” (For %*’s sake, Boy-see! It’s pronounced “yee-roh.”) Look tasty? That’s what’s known as a gyro. Speaking last fall, Brink explained that Arete, Gyro Shack’s owner, had shuttered the store at 1050 E. Fairview Ave. in Meridian to debut a newly created brand, Rapido Burrito. The primary motive? Too many Gyro Shacks in close proximity, he said. But Boiseans’ tilted-head reaction to the Greek concept of rotisserie-cooked meat wrapped in pita bread certainly didn’t help, either. Last Friday, Arete surrendered yet another Gyro Shack — at 9056 W. Emerald St., at the intersection of Maple Grove Road. This Friday, it will open as the area’s second Rapido Burrito, serving a similarly limited menu. “Gyro Shack is just tough in this market,” Brink reiterated this week. “… We spend a lot of time educating people on what our food is. There’s just not a huge foundation for Mediterranean in the market, right? You see brands like Taziki’s come in and go out. “What we found when we converted the store was just better sales out of that Fairview location as a taco and burrito shop than a gyro shop. “So the Maple Grove and Emerald store was struggling, so we’re going to flip that one, too, and see if it kind of works just as well and makes sense for us to renew that lease.” The former Gyro Shack on Fairview Avenue has become Rapido Burrito. A second location on Emerald Street and Maple Grove will follow suit Friday. Founded in the City of Trees in 2009, Gyro Shack is a blend of company-owned and franchise drive-thrus — and a Gem State success story. Fans tend to love the chain. “Tried them for the first time today, and it won’t be the last,” a Google reviewer wrote recently of the Boise location at 5602 W. State St. Even with the latest closure, four Treasure Valley Gyro Shacks remain: two longtime Boise locations, “which are rocking,” Brink said, and two more in Meridian. There are no plans to transition any of those to Rapido Burrito shops, he said. Gyro Shack also has two locations in Tucson, Arizona, and two in Albuquerque, New Mexico — all products of recent expansion out of state. Still, it’s more likely that additional Rapido Burritos will pop up in the Boise area before Gyro Shacks do. The Gyro Shack franchisee who masterminded Rapido Burrito probably will open another location in the next year, Brink said. New Boise motto: Burritos! Totally heard of ’em! “There’s no education for it, right?” Brink said. “Unfortunately in this market with gyros, there’s an education curve.” Source link #Chain #closes #restaurant #uneducated #Boise #Idaho #heard #burrito Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
