  2. Arizona county treasurer pleads guilty to embezzling more than $38 million for personal expenses Arizona county treasurer pleads guilty to embezzling more than $38 million for personal expenses A former county treasurer pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of embezzlement by a public official, money laundering and tax evasion after stealing more than $38 million in county funds between 2012 and 2024 to renovate her ranches, buy at least 20 cars and pay for personal expenses for herself and her family. Elizabeth Gutfahr served as the elected treasurer of Santa Cruz County, Arizona, from 2014 through April 12, 2024. During some of that time, she transferred funds from Santa Cruz County bank accounts to her personal Wells Fargo Bank account and a Bank of Montreal account, according to court documents. “I wire transferred the Santa Cruz County funds from the County’s Savings Account and Checking Account for the purpose and as an essential part of carrying out the scheme to defraud to fraudulently obtain the funds for my personal use, all without authorization,” Gutfahr said, according to court documents. “I agree I owe restitution in the amount of $38,712,100.00.” Gutfahr also used fake business accounts to help conceal the transfer of funds from the Santa Cruz County bank account. “These account names were materially false and fraudulent representations to intentionally conceal the fact that I was wire transferring Santa Cruz County funds to my Wells Fargo and BMO Accounts to embezzle the County’s funds,” Gutfahr said, according to her plea agreement. Gutfahr’s attorney said in a statement Gutfahr wants to “to take responsibility for the harm she has caused to Santa Cruz County.” “She knows that by pleading guilty, and accepting the punishment she will face as a result, she is taking a step in the right direction to be accountable for her actions,” Joshua Hamilton said. “She will work to remain on that path for the rest of her life.” Gutfahr’s plea shows the Justice Department’s commitment “to rooting out public *********** at all levels of government,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole Argentieri said. “We expect public officials to serve as stewards of the government … not to loot it,” Argentieri said. Gutfahr, who has been released and had to surrender her passport, is scheduled to be sentenced on February 6, 2025. She could face up to 35 years in prison as well as paying restitution to Santa Cruz County and federal taxes in the amount of $13,143,526 for the tax years 2014 through 2023. 4. South ******** writer and anti-apartheid activist Breyten Breytenbach ***** aged 85 South ******** writer and anti-apartheid activist Breyten Breytenbach ***** aged 85 Getty Images Breyten Breytenbach was a vocal critic of the apartheid regime The renowned anti-apartheid writer and activist Breyten Breytenbach, jailed for his beliefs in South ******* in the 1970s, has ***** aged 85, his family said. He passed away in his sleep, with his wife Yolande by his side in Paris. The dissident poet, novelist and painter was “an immense artist, militant against apartheid, he fought for a better world until the end,” a statement from his family read. Breytenbach’s sharp intellect earned him widespread admiration, prompting the British satirical television puppet show Spitting Image to describe him as “the only nice South ********” in a song during apartheid’s darkest days. Jack Lang, French former education minister, shared a heartfelt tribute on X. “A rebel with a tender heart, he was part of all the struggles for human rights,” he wrote. Born in the Western Cape on 16 September 1939, to a family of five, Breytenbach lived much of his life abroad, but always remained true to his South ******** roots. He attended the University of Cape Town and joined a group of Afrikaans poets and writers called the Sestigers, who wanted to highlight the beauty of the language while critiquing the ******* apartheid regime. Afrikaans evolved among white settlers and comes from the Dutch word for ********. With Afrikaners in power during apartheid, the language became ever more associated with the oppressive regime. In an interview with The New York Times, he said: “I’d never ******* Afrikaans as a language, but I ******* it as part of the Afrikaner political identity. I no longer consider myself an Afrikaner.” In 1960 he left South ******* for a self-imposed exile, mostly in Europe, but he continued to be a vocal critic of the apartheid regime. He worked in London for a while before settling in France, where he met his Vietnamese wife Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien. Breytenbach tried to return to South ******* with his wife in the 1960s, but she was denied a visa because she was a “non-white”. ************ marriages were against the law. Getty Images Breyten Breytenbach, reunited with his wife Yolande, after his release from prison In 1975, at the height of his literary fame, he made a clandestine return to South *******, where he was arrested for attempting to aid resistance groups in the country. He was sentenced to seven years in prison for terrorism, but continued to write poetry while he was jailed. The then French President, François Mitterrand, helped secure his release in 1982 and he became a French citizen. The years of imprisonment resulted in one of his most impactful works, his novel The True Confessions of an Albino ********** – a harrowing account of his seven-year prison sentence, two of which he spent in solitary confinement. After apartheid ended, he became a vocal critic of the liberation government of Nelson Mandela. He felt the ******** National Congress (ANC) had turned into a “corrupt organisation”. The poet didn’t only use his pen to ****** those injustices in South *******, but also around the world. In 2002, he wrote an open letter in The Guardian to the then Prime Minister of *******, Ariel Sharon. “Why should we look the other way when it is ******* committing *******? A viable state cannot be built on the expulsion of another people who have as much claim to that territory as you have,” he wrote about the ongoing conflict between ******* and the Palestinians. Breytenbach published over 50 books during his lifetime, and some have been translated into multiple languages. He is also known for his surreal paintings, which often depict humans and animals in captivity. He was later made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, France’s top cultural award. Sonic x Shadow Generations review – ChristCenteredGamer Sonic x Shadow Generations review – ChristCenteredGamer CCG writes – “Going in ******, and with very few expectations, I greatly enjoyed my time with Shadow Generations, and it was great to see Shadow display emotions outside of “dark and brooding” all the time. While Sonic Frontiers had me cautiously optimistic about the future of the series, their work with Shadow Generations convinces me that the people currently in charge of Sonic Team know what they are doing. I have ****** in the future of the series if they are the ones handling it. Shadow Generations is simply put, an engaging ride for anyone who enjoyed any previous 3D Sonic entry whether your last one played was Frontiers or Adventure 2. It’s not a perfect game, no game is obviously as it does have some minor flaws scattered throughout, but whether a 3-and-a-half hour, to up to 8-hour adventure is worth $50—that’s up to you and your financial situation in the end. 6. Lukaku’s goal puts Napoli back on top of Serie A Lukaku’s goal puts Napoli back on top of Serie A Romelu Lukaku has scored against his former club as Napoli beat struggling Roma 1-0 to reclaim the Serie A lead and spoil Claudio Ranieri’s debut with the Giallorossi. Napoli moved one point ahead of Atalanta, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio with the win at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Also on Sunday, Fiorentina won 2-0 at Como for their seventh consecutive victory and Lazio beat 10-man Bologna 3-0. Lukaku redirected in a cross from Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo early in the second half. Roma had a chance to equalise but Artem Dovbyk’s header banged off the crossbar. Lukaku played for Roma last season but was one of the main transfer targets when Antonio Conte was hired at Napoli for this season. Ranieri was hired 10 days ago as Roma’s third coach of the season, replacing the fired Ivan Juric, who had in turn replaced Daniele De Rossi. Still, Roma remained in 12th place, four points above the relegation zone. Yacine Adli put Fiorentina ahead with a long-range strike early on. Then Moise Kean redirected in a cross midway through the second half for his ninth goal of the season. Fiorentina last won seven straight in a single Serie A campaign in 1960, when they won eight in a row. Bologna were reduced to 10 men when Tommaso Pobega picked up two yellows during the first half. But it took a while until Lazio took control with second-half goals from Samuel Gigot, Mattia Zaccagni and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Patrick Vieira’s debut as Genoa coach was a 2-2 draw with Cagliari. Both of Cagliari’s goals came on penalties, including Roberto Piccoli’s equaliser in the 88th. Vieira was hired on Wednesday to replace the fired Alberto Gilardino. Mario Balotelli came on late for Genoa and didn’t make an impact. Torino and Monza drew 1-1. 7. Will “Mar-a-Lago Face” Take Over D.C.? Will “Mar-a-Lago Face” Take Over D.C.? A viral meme from earlier this year showing before and after shots of several women in Donald Trump’s immediate orbit — RNC chair Lara Trump, Don Jr. squeeze Kimberly Guilfoyle, *********** theorist Laura Loomer and South Dakota governor and confessed dog ******* Kristi Noem — pointed to an undeniable trend. Their faces had all, over an unspecified *******, morphed from conventionally human to makeup-caked, angular cheekboned, full-lipped, Fellini-esque exaggerations of the dolled-up Fox News anchorwoman look. And it’s not just the women: Few of us can remember the content of former Florida Rep. (and former prospective attorney general) Matt Gaetz’s RNC speech last summer, so fixated were we on the new elfin arc of his eyebrows. (And the less said about George Santos and his Botox habit, the better.) As with everything Trump, the look represents a brash departure from well-established D.C. norms. Could Trump’s return to the White House trigger a nationwide surge of Mar-a-Lago face in defiance of the 2024 vogue for deflation and discretion? After all, the White House has a proud history of trendsetting, from “Jackie style” to Michelle Obama’s championing of designer Jason Wu, to Trump’s knee-length ties. More from The Hollywood Reporter Matt Gaetz at the RNC in July. Washington style trends may be more ************* than in L.A. and New York, but the city’s politicos and media personalities are just as prone to seek cosmetic assistance. “Everybody gets some tweaking,’’ said dermatologist Tina Alster, who counts Nancy Pelosi and Wolf Blitzer among her patients and is among D.C.’s most renowned aesthetic doctors. “Kamala has been maintaining for a long time, Biden’s Botox is sometimes overdone, Trump has a ruddy complexion that needs some tending to,” assesses Alster. (THR has not confirmed any of these public servants’ cosmetic regimens.) If indeed the Trump restoration does spark a plastic surgery bonanza, don’t expect Capitol Hill to admit it. Alster treats her patient visits like CIA exfiltrations. She has a back door and secret staircase to shuttle politicos and media bigwigs discreetly. “I try to book those with Secret Service early before other people arrive, or late, after they leave, and I take great pains to make sure I separate the appointment of Democrats and Republicans by at least an hour.’’ And, she says, standard before and after pictures are often forbidden: “Some of the *********** operatives have been adamant that I don’t take any photos of them and insist on putting their charts under alias names.” This story appeared in the Nov. 20 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. 8. Ireland hardens ******** immigration response Ireland hardens ******** immigration response WATCH: Irish police stop a bus that has crossed the border from Northern Ireland The three Gardai – Irish police officers – walk down the rows of passengers on the bus, a few kilometres south of the border with Northern Ireland. Observing this is the head of the Garda National Immigration Bureau, Det Ch Supt Aidan Minnock. “If they don’t have status to be in Ireland, we bring them to Dublin,” he explains. “They’re removed on a ferry back to the *** on the same day.” Asylum applications in Ireland have risen by nearly 300% so far this year compared to the same ******* five years ago. A spike in arrivals from the *** has been driven by various factors, among these the ***’s tougher stance post-Brexit, including the ***** of deportations to Rwanda, as well as Ireland’s relatively healthy economy. Most asylum seekers coming from the *** to the Republic of Ireland enter the country from Northern Ireland, as – unlike the airport or ferry routes – there is no passport control. The Garda checks along the 500km-long (310 miles) border are the only means of stopping ******** entry. Det Ch Supt Minnock told the BBC that 200 people had been returned to the *** this year as a result of these checkpoints, thought to be only a small fraction of those crossing the porous border illegally. More than 2,000 people who arrived in Ireland illegally have been issued deportation orders so far this year, a 156% increase on the same ******* in 2023. However, only 129 of those people (just over 6%) are confirmed to have since left the state. The government has said it will begin chartered deportation flights in the coming months, and free up more immigration Gardai from desk work. Det Ch Supt Aidan Minnock says he understands what motivates people to seek asylum Onboard the coach near the border, the Gardai question a young man about where he lives. He is Algerian – a student, he says. The police are suspicious and he is taken to the detention vehicle while his identity is checked. A veteran of war ******* investigations in post-war Bosnia – as part of an EU police team – Det Ch Supt Minnock knows well the ********* and ******** that drives migration. “This is growing at such a scale because of the conflict and instability right across the world,” he says. Public concern over immigration is closely linked to Ireland’s chronic housing problem. The Republic now has the worst record in the EU for housing young people. The CEO of the Irish ******** Council, Nick Henderson, says the crisis is a “perfect storm”, created in part by the ******** to build enough housing stock over decades, and a government unprepared for the upsurge in asylum seekers – known in Ireland as International Protection Applicants (IPAs) – needing help with accommodation. “[The government] is only able to provide accommodation through private contractors. That, coupled with an increase in the number of people seeking protection in Ireland, and against the background of a housing crisis has meant, in effect, that Ireland’s asylum reception system has really collapsed.” In nearly three years, the number of asylum seekers accommodated by the state’s International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) has more than quadrupled – from 7,244 to 32,649 people. Over 100,000 Ukrainians, who were given a separate status, also sought refuge in Ireland during that time. Tens of thousands of international protection applicants – some already with asylum status in Ireland, others waiting to be processed – have been sent to communities around the country, accommodated in hotels, former schools, apartments, even large tented camps. Ireland’s housing shortage means that even those granted asylum are struggling to leave the temporary system as others arrive. Nearly 1,000 people are now living in tented accommodation. Getty Images Rows of tents housing asylum seekers pitched along Dublin’s Grand Canal in May this year This makeshift response has generated resentment. In the village of Dundrum, County Tipperary – population 221 – a group of locals attempted to block the arrival of asylum seekers at the gates of a former hotel in August. The proposal to house up to 277 people at Dundrum House, which hasn’t operated as a hotel since 2015, would double the local population. Locals worry that it will be a permanent fixture. “How can our government not engage properly with us?” asks Andrea Crowe, a local teacher and protester who has frequently spoken in public. She cites concerns over housing, health and education provision for the community. Protester Andrea Crowe feels the government ******* to consult with the community before sending the asylum seekers to Dundrum House The protest outside Dundrum House has been there for more than 180 days Since July, there has been a 24-hour protest outside the hotel. Ms Crowe, whose family once owned the Dundrum House hotel, accuses the government of failing to consult with the community – a common complaint around the country. “How can we not be concerned?” she says. The IPAS community currently living at Dundrum House is made up of about 80 women and children. There is also a separate group of Ukrainian families, welcomed after the Russian invasion in February 2022. Several locals told us they feared that single men – who make up 35% of asylum seekers arriving in Ireland so far this year – would eventually replace the women and children, although there so far is no evidence to suggest this is planned in Dundrum. Local builder, Martin Barry, cites the housing crisis as a key reason for his protest, particularly the plight of his eldest son. “My own young fella, he can’t afford a place to rent,” he says. Martin Barry is one of a rotating group of about a dozen people who have been protesting outside Dundrum House But Martin Barry also speaks to deeper fears of change in some rural communities. The dance hall where he met his wife has closed. The local pub is for *****. There were hopes Dundrum House would be reopened and used by the local community. “It’s just the worry of what’s coming down the line,” he says. We meet two South ******** women given refuge at Dundrum House. Both were sent from their accommodation in Dublin – 180km (110 miles) away – to make way for newer arrivals into the capital, some of whom were sleeping in tents on the streets. The women ask to remain anonymous. “Lerato” had been in Dublin for a year. “I had integrated with society, and made friends. My child was attending school and I was comfortable.” Her friend “Kayla” speaks of being isolated in Dundrum, a farming community with limited transport amenities. These two women say they were moved to Dundrum from Dublin at five hours’ notice Far-right parties show scant support in opinion polls. Immigration worries are likely to be expressed in support for independent candidates. But online, far-right agitators stoke *****. There have been violent riots and arson attacks on sites meant to house, or rumoured to house, asylum seekers, and refugees have been attacked in their tents on Dublin’s streets. A common *********** theory is that migrants are being “planted” in Ireland as part of a plot to dominate Irish people and ******** their culture. We saw two posters referring to a “plantation” at the Dundrum House protest. The now-closed online GoFundMe Page for Dundrum referred to Ireland’s “indigenous” population fighting “for our very existence” and the government “flooding communities with asylum seekers”. The page – which raised more than €3,000 (£2,500) – was set up by a local businessman. He turns out to have posted antisemitic, Islamophobic and anti-vaccine conspiracist material on social media. We ask Andrea Crowe, one of the prominent voices of the Dundrum protest, if she is comfortable with such a person being involved? Ms Crowe says she does not “follow social media much” and it is not up to her to manage other people’s reactions. But she says she’s “not comfortable with it”. “Stop the immigration plantation of Ireland” reads one poster at Dundrum Others in County Tipperary welcome asylum seekers. Some 17 groups came together under the slogan “Tipperary Welcomes” after the Dundrum protest began. John Browne, a member of the community council, says the issue divides people. “I don’t have a problem with it because we’re relatively wealthy, and the situation is pretty bad in parts of ******* and where most of these people are coming from.” But he disagrees strongly with the numbers involved in small places like Dundrum. “It imbalances the community. And it’s no good for the people coming in, because there’s nothing here for them.” We caught up with Ireland’s Minister for Integration, Roderic O’Gorman, while he was campaigning in Dublin for the General Election, due to be held on 29 November. He now canvasses votes with two police guards after being assaulted by a man protesting against immigration. Ireland’s Minister for Integration, Roderic O’Gorman, says the state is engaging more with local communities Mr O’Connor says many areas welcome asylum seekers. “There are communities all over the place who are actually embracing and supporting,” he says. But he accepts some failures. “I recognise in the initial parts of our response, there were times where there wasn’t that level of engagement that we need,” he says. There are now Community Engagement Teams responsible for liaising with residents, although the protesters we spoke to in Dundrum say they have had only one meeting with a team and are still no wiser about the long-term plans for the hotel. The dance hall in Dundrum has now closed – the village pub is for ***** Official policy is hardening. Ukrainian asylum seekers who arrived amid widespread public sympathy and were given special benefits, recently saw these slashed from €232 (£190) to €38.80 (£32) per week – a cut of 83%. South Africans now need visas to enter the country. A visa loophole which allowed Jordanians – at one point the largest group of asylum seekers in Ireland – to enter from the *** has been closed. Concern over immigration has so far not translated into electoral support for far-right parties. Nick Henderson at the ******** Council believes this need not be inevitable in Ireland. “Communities want to welcome people, but they need resources. They need communication.” The Republic’s image as a stable and progressive democracy won’t change in this electoral cycle. But the rise in far-right populism internationally is a warning for the future – of how concern over immigration can be made a focus for other discontents and create turbulent politics. 10. Almost 30 years later, playing the Nintendo 64 in 2024 Almost 30 years later, playing the Nintendo 64 in 2024 Retro gaming hasn’t changed as much as some would have thought over the last 20 years. Now we have good ways to connect old consoles to modern TVs, a wide range of flash carts and emulation options available, and even new homebrew games are being produced and hardware such as controllers being developed. However, booting up an N64 and playing a classic or two ******** as warm and nostalgic as it has been since about the year 2000. The N64, in particular, is home to some of the most innovative games of all time. It also is home to some fun multiplayer games, meaning it is a great console to have hooked up and ready to play constantly. Read on for a general guide to playing N64 in 2024. The Nintendo 64 was originally designed to be played on CRT televisions. ‘Cathode-ray tube’ televisions were big, bulky, and displayed a grainy, low-definition image. Most TVs were of this form in the 80s, 90s, and until around 2005. Modern HD TVs use a different mechanism to display the image compared to old CRT TVs. Because of this new mechanism, the TV doesn’t need to be big and bulky; a screen can only be a few centimeters in width. Modern TVs’ images are clear and detailed, and the definition is crisp, especially compared to old CRT TVs. An HDMI cable is often used to connect a console to a modern TV. However, an N64 and other old consoles do not have an HDMI port. So, to get the N64 to work on a modern TV, you need to choose from a vast array of converters and adapters that each have a certain chance of working to a certain level. Most of these will give you a flickering screen with certain games. It is a lottery as to whether you can get a playable experience out of the conglomerate of devices you attach to try and get this archaic technology to work. A quick and easy option is to use an Eon 64 plug-and-play HDMI converter. These will cost around £119 but will work straight out of the box and will fix 99% of screen flickering issues. It’s amazing how far technology has developed in recent years. You can now emulate N64 games on a budget smartphone. While the ethics of doing this can be questioned (piracy), the frame rate and picture quality are quite good. However, for some of us, when we play N64 games, we strive for that grainy, barely visible look that can only be achieved with a legit N64 and dodgy TV connection (I’m only half being sarcastic). There is also the advantage of using the original three-pronged controller when playing on a genuine N64 compared to using emulation. If you use a flash cart with your N64, you can have multiple classic games on one cart, and for lazy people, this is great, as it means you don’t need to get up to change cartridges (although you still need to restart the system to change games, so that almost defeats the purpose of it). Regardless of how often you get up to restart the system, there can be no denying that having all your saves and games on one cartridge is nice. One thing I’ve noticed when using a combination of the Eon 64 converter and an Everdrive 64 is that the region of the ROMs is relevant to how the setup will function. ********* N64 games have notoriously run at a lower frame rate than their ********* N64 counterparts. ********* versions run at a maximum of 60 frames per second, while PAL versions run at a maximum of 50 frames per second. Unfortunately, when using the Eon 64 converter and Everdrive 64 on a PAL system, the Eon 64 converter must be a ********* version, and the ROMs that you use must also be PAL. If they are NTSC, the games will not boot. This means that even with a good setup like the one described, you have to use the slower PAL ROMs for the system to work. I grew up playing on PAL consoles, so this doesn’t bother me, but I can see how it matters to speed-run artists who rely on exact frames to pull off glitches. When playing N64 in 2024, there’s also a console appearance to take into account when making choices. Do you go for the regular grey and ****** slab? The semi-transparent consoles are probably the most appealing. The Smoke, Ice, and Watermelon variants look “90s-style cool,” too. I was a proud owner of the ***** variant back in the day. At one point over the years, the power cable must have snapped, and my mother discarded the system, thinking it was worthless (or maybe it still exists in a box in an attic somewhere). Whichever system you go for, remember the device’s region code is important to the setup in terms of compatibility and getting the thing to work properly. The N64 was born into a world where the Game Boy dominated portable gaming. Shortly after the N64 was released (and increasingly with the arrival of the second generation of Pokemon), there were official ways the N64 and Game Boy could interact and exchange game data. Unlike the SNES Game Boy Player, which allowed Game Boy games to be played on SNES, the N64 connection options are usually related to special unlockable features rather than a simple conversion to play Game Boy games on your TV. The Pokemon Stadium games converted the 2D battle sprites of Pokemon Red and Blue into fully 3D animations. The games are connected via an add-on called the Transfer Pak. Other games that used the feature include the Mario Tennis games, Mario Golf games, and Perfect Dark. In 2024, to get the most out of Pokemon Stadium and recapture the magic of Pokemon in the 90s, a Transfer Pak is recommended. It’s still possible to pick up an old one from eBay for less than £20. Unfortunately, unlike N64 controllers, I couldn’t find a manufacturer who makes new transfer paks. An issue related to this and Nintendo retro gaming in 2024 is that if you’ve been playing ROM hacks or reproduction Pokemon games on Game Boy, unfortunately, most of these versions won’t work with the transfer pack; it has to be official copies of Pokemon Red, Blue, Gold, and Silver. However, there are some exceptions. The great open-world homebrew title (hack of Pokemon Crystal), Pokemon Crystal Clear, does work with Pokemon Stadium 2 and the Transfer Pak. Although you can emulate N64 games and play them on devices such as the Switch, the Wii, a laptop, or even your phone, there is something authentic about playing on a genuine N64 with a grainy display and the original three-pronged controller. Of course, there are some aspects of using a real N64 that I have missed in this article, such as using the Expansion Pak. You need one to play some games, such as Zelda: Majora’s Mask (even if you are using a flash cart). Some aspects of using an N64 are arguably worse than using emulation. There are no quality-of-life features when using an authentic N64. However, overall, I think it can be said that yes, it is worth the hassle to play an N64 in 2024, but only if you have nostalgia for the system. Otherwise, it is easier to emulate (specifically Nintendo Switch Online, if possible). I hope I have written an interesting piece that 90s kids will appreciate. The N64 didn’t have many games; it had slightly less than 400 compared to thousands on rival systems, yet some of its best titles influenced their genres for years to come. Next time that you play Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, or Goldeneye, think back to a simpler time when the internet was young, and there were no smartphones, and maybe you’ll realize gaming would never get any better than at certain moments two and a half decades ago when you galloped triumphantly over a ranch gate, stealthily sniped a soldier in a *******, or flew into eight red coins consecutively. We all had fewer responsibilities and worries, and gaming was a simple pleasure. Source link #years #playing #Nintendo Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Cold winds blowing up the length of Lake Erie set in motion a catastrophe that would damage hundreds of homes and businesses, shut down entire cities for days on end, and even force a mother-to-be to give birth at a ***** station because no vehicles could get her to a hospital. A solid band of lake-effect snow rolled into western New York on November 17, 2014. This unwavering squall was as torrential as it was tenacious, producing whiteout conditions that wouldn’t finally cease until the 19th. That days-long lake-effect snow event produced as much as 165 cm of snow near Buffalo, New York, burying some homes up to their second floors and immobilizing the area for days. Some of that air comes in direct contact with those warmer waters, heating up that shallow layer of air like a camper holding their hands over a ***** to stay warm. This air becomes warmer than its surroundings, allowing it to begin rising through the atmosphere. A ******* difference between the temperature of the lake and the atmosphere above will cause the air to rise even more quickly, feeding the formation of snow showers similar to the way we’d see thunderstorms bubble up on a hot July day. WATCH: How lake-effect snow forms over a warm lake Click here to view the video A dangerous game of fetch If you can’t stand snow, you don’t want to make fetch happen. Fetch is the distance that wind travels over open water. A longer fetch means that wind spends more time and travels more distance over the water, a key ingredient to the formation of lake-effect snow. Stiff winds blowing across the water organize these snow showers into bands, blowing them over the lakeshores and bringing us the rounds of lake-effect that are so familiar during the leadup to the holiday season. Meteorologists closely watch the direction of the wind for clues about where bands of snow will set up and how heavy they could grow. A short fetch leads to multiple but narrow bands of snow that can cover a large area with a modest blanket of accumulation. A long fetch, on the other hand, leads to single, thick bands of snow. The Great Lakes are king, but it’s a widespread problem The size, depth, and location of the Great Lakes makes this region prime real estate for lake-effect snow, but this phenomenon is possible across Canada and around the world. lake effect snow belt Lake-effect snow is common in southern Manitoba during the early fall before the lakes freeze over. Sea-effect snow—which forms through the same process, just over the ocean instead—is a regular sight throughout the cold season across the Atlantic provinces. We even see lake- and sea-effect snow around the world. Sapporo, Japan, is one of the snowiest cities in the world due to sea-effect snow burying the city of nearly two million people with metre after metre of powder each season. Prevailing winds make certain parts of the Great Lakes more prone to these blockbuster snow events than others. Northwesterly winds blowing across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay leave communities like Kincardine, Goderich, and Barrie open to heavy bands of snow. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are infamous for their firehose-like bands of snow dumping on the Niagara region, eastern Ontario, and western New York because southwesterly winds achieve an exceptionally long fetch along the entire length of these lakes, feeding intense bands of snow that can last for days. WATCH: Why snow squalls are so difficult to predict Click here to view the video Frightening intensity meets a ******’s edge Those legendary bands of snow can produce some of the most intense wintry conditions you’ll ever experience on the planet, akin to a vigorous wintertime thunderstorm. The most powerful lake-effect events can produce snowfall rates that exceed 10 cm of snow an hour, overwhelming the ability for plows to keep roads clear for more than a few minutes at a time. Convection strong enough to produce that kind of ripping snowfall often leads to vivid lightning and loud claps of thunder. (NY State Police/Facebook) Snow covered highway in Buffalo November 2014 Multiple feet of snow cover the New York State Thruway near Buffalo, New York, during the lake-effect snowstorm in November 2014. (New York State Police/Facebook) MUST SEE: Why Ontario’s ‘snow snake’ caught many–including forecasters–off guard What’s scarier than the hours-long whiteouts and prolific thundersnow is the fact that these bands can be notoriously hard to predict. Snow squalls are often so narrow that a couple of kilometres means the difference between a serene wintry scene and a nightmarish disaster that shuts down entire neighbourhoods for days at a time. Just a tiny shift in wind direction or a tiny wobble in the band itself can shift those mammoth snow totals right along with it. The mounds of snow that fell south of Buffalo in 2014 would’ve hit the centre of the city itself if the band had wiggled just a few kilometres farther north. Thumbnail image courtesy of Pixabay. Dems back Rubio for State, but criticize Trump-picks Hegseth, Gabbard Dems back Rubio for State, but criticize Trump-picks Hegseth, Gabbard A handful of Democrats are sounding their approval of *********** Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State but others continue to doubt some cabinet picks made by President-elect Donald Trump. “I think Marco Rubio is enormously well-qualified for the job for which he’s been nominated,” Democratic Senator-elect from California Adam Schiff said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning. “I still want to ask questions, I’m not going to completely pre-judge even him, but he’s unquestionably qualified.” Trump has made a flurry of cabinet picks in the last two weeks, naming his choices for all 15 heads of the executive departments. Eyes are now on the U.S. Senate to confirm the candidates. Rubio is deemed one of the “less MAGA” options within Trump’s circle, a Trump ally told NBC News earlier this month, with another saying that he has become “far more aligned with the President on issues regarding tariffs.” Trump campaigned in support of universal tariffs in the 2024 election cycle, with a specifically harsh 60% tariff on goods from China. Rubio is notoriously tough on China and is a fierce advocate for the demonetization of social media platform TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, in the ******* States. He is also hawkish on Iran while remaining ambivalent about support for Ukraine. Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman also said that he is a “fan” of Rubio in an interview with Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday,” and said he will vote to confirm him. Fetterman said he might also “enthusiastically vote yes” for Rep. Elise Stefanik to serve as U.S. ambassador to the ******* Nations, and for union-friendly Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor secretary. Fetterman also said he is keeping an open mind for other candidates, such as his former rival for the Pennsylvania Senate seat Dr. Mehmet Oz for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator. “I’m not going to pre-hate this. I’m going to have an open conversation for anyone that I’m open to having part of that conversation,” Fetterman said. Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she has “a friendship” with Rubio and said she’s looking forward to talking to him about his policies. Duckworth, a combat veteran injured in Iraq, weighed in on Trump’s defense and veteran affairs picks, as well, in her interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning. While the senator said she is open to conversations with *********** Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Veteran Affairs, she deemed Fox News host Pete Hegseth “unqualified” for the position of Secretary of Defense. “He never commanded a company, let alone battalions, brigades or whole armies,” Duckworth said of Hegseth, who is an Army National Guard veteran. “There are ways to be disruptors without actually putting people who have never run an organization larger than a platoon to be Secretary of Defense,” Duckworth continued, adding that Collins would be a good example. “The VA has been having a terrible issue with their electronic medical records program. Hopefully Doug Collins gets in there and is a disruptor.” Hegseth has also been under ***** for a 2017 police investigation in connection with an alleged ******* ******** at a California hotel. Duckworth alleged that Gabbard is “compromised,” and she worries that the former congresswoman couldn’t pass a background check. “I think that she is someone who is wholly backing and supportive of [Russian President Vladimir ******], and I worry that she will not have America’s best interests at heart,” Duckworth said. Some Republicans, however, refute the claims that Duckworth is a Russian asset. “I think it’s insulting. It’s a slur, quite frankly,” *********** Sen. McMaster, who has been openly critical of some aspects of Trump’s foreign policy agenda after his time in the administration, also said he is worried about some *********** officials’ tendencies to parrot Russian President ******’s talking points. “They’ve got to disabuse themselves of this, you know, strange affection for Vladimir ******,” McMaster said. 14. Steve Cooper: Why Leicester City boss was sacked five months into reign Steve Cooper: Why Leicester City boss was sacked five months into reign Leicester, relegated in 2023, are not the same club which stunned the world to win the 2016 Premier League title. Their ambitions have had to change. But the work Cooper and his coaches had done had, slowly, begun to pay off and he has been willing to compromise his beliefs – like he did at Nottingham Forest – to ensure survival. Scoring goals was not the issue either, this month’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester ******* was the only time the Foxes have not scored in a league game this season. He kept Forest up in 2022-23 having guided them to promotion the season before after taking over when they were bottom of the Championship. Yet his pedigree from the City Ground meant there were always concerns about his past when he crossed the east Midlands in June. Cooper, who won the Under-17 World Cup with England, and others dismissed those fears but it was clear some Leicester supporters did not completely buy into his reign. This is despite him writing an open letter to them following his appointment and inviting club legends like Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart to the training ground to talk to really understand the Foxes. He spoke about wanting to get under the skin of the club during a pre-season chat after a game at Shrewsbury and was true to his word. Cooper recognised he needed to earn the fans’ ****** and his refusal to go over the top after the first win of the season against Bournemouth in October showed there was work to do. The former Swansea boss understood he did not have the memories or credit in the bank from taking Leicester up – unlike Russell Martin or Kieran McKenna at Southampton and Ipswich – so had to build the relationship the hard way during a relegation battle. There was always the issue he could have been seen as second choice by some – following Maresca’s departure – after the club came close, but ultimately could not agree a deal, with Graham Potter. In the summer, the Foxes were always in open dialogue with Cooper but they could now be given a second chance with the former Chelsea manager, who has been out of work since leaving Stamford Bridge in April 2023. Leicester’s supporters have been passionate backers of their managers in recent years – only the stale football of Claude Puel in 2018-19 failing to capture the imagination recently – and murmurings from the terraces were clear. The error-strewn 3-1 defeat by Forest in October had the away supporters serenading their former manager, underlining the difference in feeling between the fans. That was not necessarily Cooper’s fault as he was handed a difficult task, taking over when Leicester were under threat of a points deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules. The Foxes won their appeal over the charge in September but it was not quick enough. Cooper felt the financial cloud hanging over the club impacted their ability in the summer transfer market. He still brought in Oliver Skipp from Tottenham for £20m and defender Caleb Okoli from Atalanta for around £13m but Bilal El Khannouss, signed for a reported £21m from Genk, has made just three league starts and is yet to play a full 90 minutes. There was a ******* – from everyone connected with the club – for the appointment to work and Cooper’s personable manner makes it difficult not to feel sympathy. He stayed to chat after news conferences. Honest, affable and likable, he talked tactics, players and music, but being the nice guy cuts little ice in the Premier League. He strode into Portman Road wearing a very big coat, which the much milder temperatures didn’t actually require. There was a purpose about his manner. His pre-match hug with opposite number Kieran McKenna was cordial and nothing more. And Rashford’s opener within two minutes was the perfect start. It wasn’t long though before Amorim was calling Diogo Dalot and Alejandro Garnacho over during a brief break in play to explain how he expected their combination to work. Once that conversation was done, he explained what he wanted to Jonny Evans and Casemiro. The term learning on the job could not be more apt. “Did we really, from what we have seen this season, expect this to be a Manchester ******* team transformed?” questioned Chris Sutton on Radio 5 Live. “Ruben Amorim wants to change the style but the players have been away on international duty. Right-sided defender of a back three is Mazraoui’s fourth position of the season. Government approval documents first reported by CarExpert earlier this month uncovered the turbo-diesel Terron 9 and its electric eTerron 9 sibling, with LDV’s website confirming at the time the latter ute was due during the first quarter of 2025 (January to March). That launch timing has now been pushed back to the second quarter (April to June), and LDV has confirmed it’s currently conducting final validation testing for the Terron 9 in Australia. LDV engineers have been testing the Terron 9’s traffic sign recognition, lane-keep assist and other electronic driver aid systems – often a source of annoyance for drivers when programmed poorly – on main and backroads in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland in a bid to better calibrate the ute for local conditions. 100s of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. A torque figure wasn’t specified in the government approval documents. Both rear- and four-wheel drive variants have been green-lit to be sold in Australia, with ****** vehicle mass (GVM) varying between 3320kg and 3500kg. Despite being larger and more modern than the LDV T60, the Terron 9 will be sold in local showrooms alongside the older ute, which will stay on to offer buyers a more affordable alternative. “We want to make sure when a ute buyer walks into an LDV showroom, we have a vehicle that offers value across a range of price points,” said LDV Australia General Manager, Dinesh Chinnappa. Camera IconTerron 9 Credit: CarExpertCamera IconT60 Max Plus Credit: CarExpert “We are not going to leave our traditional ute buyers behind. This makes it 105mm longer, 97mm wider and 41mm taller than the T60 Max Plus on a 125mm longer wheelbase. Both utes will be joined by the electric LDV eTerron 9, a more professional approach by the brand to amp up the battery-powered ute market than the eT60. 22. Jamie George: ‘England in a very good place’, says captain Jamie George: ‘England in a very good place’, says captain England captain Jamie George says his side are “in a very good place” after ending their Autumn Nations Series by thrashing Eddie Jones’ Japan at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium. The nine-try win ensured Steve Borthwick’s side avoided six straight losses and ended their autumn campaign with a victory after close defeats by New Zealand, Australia and South *******. England held leads over both the All ******* and the Wallabies before failing to close out the victory, with both games going down to the final play. “The plan is very, very clear, we’re being coached very, very well, but we’re not able to put it out on the field for 80 minutes,” George told BBC 5 Live. “There’s so much to be proud of over four performances, I think we put some of the best teams in the world under a lot of pressure. “We arguably could have won all three of those games. The team is in a very good place.” England have lost seven games this year, with only only two of those defeats – against world champions South ******* and Scotland in this year’s Six Nations – being by more than one score. Borthwick has used 2024 to blood new talent after a number of his core squad called time on their international careers following the third-place finish at last year’s Rugby World Cup. Northampton Saints wing Ollie Sleightholme, 24, debuted in July and scored his fourth international try against Jones’ Japan, with his Saints team-mate Tommy Freeman, 23, establishing himself as a regular. Freeman provided arguably the moment of the match against the Brave Blossoms with a behind-the-back pass to full-back George Furbank, who has also become a regular in the backline this year. “We have got such a brilliant squad who are so easy to lead,” the England ******* said. “The thing that excites me the most is how far we can take this team when you look at the age and cap demographic. “It is a very, very exciting team.” Source link #Jamie #George #England #good #place #captain Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  23. Gran tells Wallaby slayer Tuipulotu: ‘We got ’em!’ Gran tells Wallaby slayer Tuipulotu: ‘We got ’em!’ “We got ’em!…” With those three little words to her *********** grandson Sione Tuipulotu, 77-year-old long-standing Melburnian Jaqueline Thomson proved you can take the wee granny out of Glasgow, but you can’t take Glasgow out of the wee granny. The old lady was flown back 17,000km from Melbourne to Murrayfield to watch the lad she helped bring up in Australia defeat the nation he grew up wanting to play for … och, what a tale! And one with a happy ending as she handed over the Hopetoun Cup to Scotland captain Sione after watching him score a barnstorming try in their 27-13 defeat of the Wallabies on Sunday. “She whispered in my ear, ‘we got ’em!” revealed Tuipulotu, when asked what Jaqueline had said on handing him the trophy. “Super special. I don’t really score many tries. Not for Glasgow, not for Scotland, but that one was pretty special while my gran was here and knowing how much she also wanted to beat Australia!” Jaqueline may have lived in Melbourne most of her life but with Glaswegian brogue still intact, could there have been a happier face at Murrayfield than when she appeared on the big screen to cheers all round. “It does feel weird (seeing her on screen),” admitted Tuipulotu, voice quivering. “But I feel really blessed this is all happening. And not just for me. Before the match, I was a little bit emotional about the fact her life’s just gone full circle. “That she’s back here watching me play for and captain Scotland. I’m just happy that she gets to have that moment. “She moved over to Australia as a young girl and raised my mum with limited stuff. And now she gets to enjoy this, gets to sit in the stand, and get some recognition. It makes me so happy.” And beating Australia? Tuipulotu wanted it as bad as gran. The former Australia under-20 centre was magnificent, looking every inch the Wallaby who’d bounded away. His slick, incisive running and distribution caused Australia problems all afternoon, and he barrelled over for a try from a long line-out, catching the Wallabies criminally napping. His feistiness, too, set the Scottish tone, not least when he got sent crashing by a Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii hit, and rose to offer a few choice words for his assailant, who actually came off worse with an injured arm that forced him out the match. “I didn’t really know it was him that hit me. It felt humungous. And when I popped up, I was looking around at who it was and saw he was on the ground, so I said something to him and then he went off.” So what did you say, Sione? “I said, ‘I hope you’re okay’,” responded Tuipulotu, perfectly deadpan. “I talk a lot during every game. When you play your mates, you want to beat them. There was a bit of stick out there, but it makes the game a lot more fun for me anyways.” It’s clear where he gets his feistiness from. Asked *******-in-cheek if gran might get a hot reception on return to Australia, he grinned: “Er, I don’t think she’ll mind!” Source link #Gran #tells #Wallaby #slayer #Tuipulotu Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  25. Wicked film’s box office opening weekend projected to be $114m Wicked film’s box office opening weekend projected to be $114m Wicked is projected to have the top-grossing opening weekend of any Broadway musical adaptation ever in the *** and Ireland, as well as North America. The adaptation of the hit musical is expected to rake in $114m (£90.6m) on its opening weekend in North America, according to data firm Boxoffice. In the *** and Ireland, the film is forecast to earn $17.6m this weekend, making it the top-grossing opening weekend of 2024. In North America, where Gladiator II also opened on Friday, this was the strongest weekend at the box office before the Thanksgiving holiday since 2013, Boxoffice said. Final figures will be released on Monday. The musical Wicked, based on a book inventing the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West, premiered on Broadway and has been running on the West End for two decades. In North America, the film adaptation raked in $46.48m on Friday (the data also includes Thursday premieres), and $36m on Saturday. The audience skewed heavily female – 72% – and 67% were over the age of 25, which is a “massive victory” for Universal, Boxoffice’s Daniel Loria said. The musical had the third biggest opening in the US this year – after Deadpool & Wolverine with $211m in July and Inside Out 2 with $154m in June. Elsewhere, the soundtrack’s hits voiced by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, including “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”, have soared into most-played lists on streaming services. Also in North America, another reinvented classic, Gladiator II, following up on Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic, opened this weekend to $22m on Friday. It then earned $18.8m on Saturday. The sequel is projected to make $55.5m over its opening weekend. However, Mr Loria predicted that Moana 2, out on Wednesday in the US, could take the top spot of the three films in North America. But with more people expected to see Wicked and Gladiator II over the holiday week, “we have potential of reaching the highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekend on record in North America by this time next week”, he said. Cinemas in the US celebrated the performance on Sunday, which comes after years of disruption from the pandemic. The National Association of Theatre Owners heralded “one of the most successful November weekends ever at the box office”. In the *** and Ireland, Wicked’s opening weekend was the biggest at the box office for filmmaker Universal since No Time to ****, the most recent James Bond instalment it distributed in 2021. Gladiator II, meanwhile, opened on 15 November in the *** and Ireland. It made $11.4m on its first weekend, then dropped to $6m this weekend, a “fairly strong performance”, Mr Loria said. Together with Paddington In Peru, which earned £9.7m on its opening weekend on 8 November, it’s “one of the most exciting box offices times in the *** post-pandemic with those three titles”, he said.
