SLO County landmark for ***** for first time in a decade — and it’ll only cost you $8.7 million
SLO County landmark for ***** for first time in a decade — and it’ll only cost you $8.7 million
Uniquely is a Tribune series that covers the moments, landmarks and personalities that define what makes living in SLO County so special.
The real estate listing says it all: You could own a 150-year-old piece of North Coast history, including a former bed-and-breakfast, restaurant, large party gazebo, wedding venue and a small bakery on a little less than an acre — if you have a cool $8.7 million in your pocket.
The circa 1875 Cass House, centrally located in downtown Cayucos, is for ***** for the first time in more than a decade.
It was listed in late February by Behnam Investment Group, the commercial division of Nest Seekers International.
Jeniece Grimshaw’s popular Bijou Bakery has been a tenant on one of the two combined lots for more than four years. She rents the compact structure on a month-to-month lease.
Grimshaw told The Tribune on Thursday that she is not worried the ***** will impact her business.
The other activities on the property at 149 Cayucos Drive have been idle since 2019.
The former home of Cayucos founder, Capt. James Cass, was listed for ***** in late February 2025. It includes a bed-and-breakfast inn, restaurant, wedding and special event venue, bakery and more.
That’s when Traci Hozie-Alderson, niece to the property’s owners Harry and Tovya McKellop of San Francisco, closed her Cass House Bar & Grill to focus on her nearby expanding Brown Butter Cookie Co. business.
Properly running two businesses was exhausting, and something had to change, Hozie-Alderson said.
“I loved the Cass House,” she said. “It was a passion project for me, and I felt so lucky to be there. It’s magical.”
Now the property is for ***** — and it’s already got some interested potential buyers.
Former ship captain James Cass, the founder of Cayucos, built the Cass House around 1875.
150-year-old Cass House was built by Cayucos founder
The man immortalized in Cayucos history, James Cass, immigrated from England at the age of 12, and was a river pilot who’d tried gold mining and farming in Sacramento County.
At the age of 49, with a wife and five children, Cass moved to the Central Coast and eventually helped establish the bustling seaport town of Cayucos.
He built a wharf and a shipping business; had cattle, dairy and fruit ranches; and established a stage line between his town and the Paso Robles and San Miguel area.
The Cass House was in need of restoration in 1979.
However, by 1944, what had been the prized Cass home was no longer owned by the Cass family, and it fell into disrepair.
“Historic homes can’t save themselves,” Tribune photojournalist David Middlecamp wrote in a column on the historic home in 2017.
In the meantime, various families lived in the house, some for many years.
The sprawling house was the second structure designated as historic by a marker from the San Luis Obispo Historical Society — now History Center of San Luis Obispo County. The plaque was placed in 1967, according to the Historical Marker Database.
When a potential buyer in August 1981 wanted the dilapidated property and planned to bulldoze the house, then-owner Harold Biaggini made his wishes for the house clear.
“We told him to go to hell,” Biaggini told The Tribune in 2017. “That house is going to be preserved.”
And so it was.
The Cass House Inn and Restaurant opened in 2007 as a bed-and-breakfast, restaurant and wedding/event venue.
Previous owners brought Central Coast landmark up to snuff
Among the subsequent owners of the Cass House were Gary and Nancy Bagnall.
Seeing the landmark status and commercial potential, they invested $1.2 million and 15 years into the community icon they’d paid $400,000 for in 1993.
They turned it into a lodging and restaurant while deeply respecting its heritage, and it opened as an inn and restaurant in 2007.
Fast forward to when the McKellops bought the historic place for $2.5 million in 2014, vowing to further enhance it and capitalize on that potential while honoring and showcasing its history.
They spent another $1.5 million to transition the restored icon into what it is today.
Cass House Inn and Restaurant in Cayucos is being sold
It’s complete with five bedrooms in the bed-and-breakfast, restaurant and a bakery, a wedding and special event venue with an arbor and lawn, the Cass Beach Cottage or guest house, a restaurant-grade kitchen and bar and much more.
The Cass House is a block from the Cayucos shore, the pier and the newly renovated Veterans Hall which is expected to reopen as early as this summer, according to Supervisor Bruce Gibson.
The property may not be for ***** for long.
The prime location and possibilities for a mini resort have already attracted quite a bit of attention, according to real estate agent Monique Alexander at Nest Seekers.
“There’s good interest going on,” she said. “We’ve had some bites already.”
But she said as always in real estate, “we’re waiting for that solid offer.”
This gazebo on the large lawn area at the Cass House in Cayucos has been a major attraction for wedding parties renting the bed-and-breakfast inn and restaurant compound.

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy unhappy with his side’s defence ahead of round-one clash with Parramatta
Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy unhappy with his side’s defence ahead of round-one clash with Parramatta
Melbourne can forget about extending the club’s phenomenal streak of NRL first-round wins unless pre-season defensive woes are rectified.
That’s the verdict from Storm coach Craig Bellamy ahead of his team’s battle with Parramatta at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Since Bellamy took charge of the club ahead of the 2003 season, Melbourne has won 21 successive first-round matches, a total that doesn’t include the 2004 campaign when the Storm had an opening-round bye.
However, stretching the run to a 22nd consecutive round-one win on Sunday is perhaps under threat, with Bellamy unhappy with Storm’s defensive displays in the club’s two trial games.
Melbourne was beaten 36-10 by the New Zealand Warriors and 36-24 by North Queensland.
“It’s always interesting when round one comes up,” Bellamy said on Saturday.
“Sometimes you think you’re ready, other times you’re not.
“Our pre-season has been pretty good as far as injury-wise. We always get a couple of injuries there, but probably the thing I’m not quite sure of is our form in the trials … our defence wasn’t great.
“We scored a few points but it’s important to be on with your defence early in the season. We should have been defending better (in the trials) than what we did, so we’ve had two weeks to hopefully correct it.
“With our contact stuff we’ve done, we’ve been a bit more aware of that. I’m sure they’ll have a good attitude (on Sunday).”
Bellamy played down his own role in the Storm’s streak of round-one wins.
“It’s not really my record, it’s the players’ record. I’m sitting up in the coaching box. I don’t have a whole heap to do with it,” he said.
“I know the players, especially our old boys, they used to hold being ready for round one pretty close to their heart, and then to perform well in round one, that was really important to them, so hopefully it’s important for these guys as well.”
Bellamy – whose side is set to include fit-again fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen as well off-season recruit Stefano Utoikamanu – will go head-to-head in a coaching battle with his former assistant Jason Ryles, who will make his NRL head coaching debut after taking charge of the Eels.
“He did a great job here as an (assistant) coach. We were sorry to lose him as a coach, but we knew he was going to move on to ******* and better things,” Bellamy said of his former right-hand man.
“They’ve worked on their play the ****** a bit, working on playing the ball quickly, and perhaps on the other side, working hard on slowing down the opposition.
“That’s one of the things that I’ve noticed is a little bit different from Parramatta last year to this year.”

New study makes surprising discovery about Tesla longevity — here’s what you need to know
New study makes surprising discovery about Tesla longevity — here’s what you need to know
If the price tag on that new Tesla is giving you second thoughts, you might want to take a look at some new longevity data published in Nature Energy.
The data was collected from vehicle inspections in the United Kingdom, and it found that the electric vehicle brand consistently ranked first for lifespan and mileage, Teslarati reported. While the average electric car is expected to cover approximately 124,000 miles in its lifetime, Tesla cars consistently cover an average of 204,000 miles, per a new report from Allt Om Elbil.
If you tend to evaluate purchases based on usable years rather than miles, Tesla is ahead there too. Its average EV lifespan is 20.3 years, whereas the average electric vehicle has a lifespan of 18.4 years. By comparison, the average gas-powered vehicle’s lifespan is 18.7 years.
Electric cars are catching up to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles across the board. As Teslarati explained, while early EVs may have lagged behind in reliability and longevity, they’re quickly closing — and in many facets, have already closed — that gap.
For example, Tesla batteries are now expected to outlast their vehicles. This fact has prompted researchers to examine how these batteries could be repurposed to extend their usable lifetimes. Utility Dive reported that used EV batteries are now being put to use as grid storage to extend clean energy in the transportation sector and beyond. According to the report, a used EV battery may still have several years of viable use in such a placement.
While the study’s biggest numbers were favorable for Tesla, the news is encouraging for the EV landscape more broadly as well, with other brands beginning to make ground on Tesla in market share and ratings from expert outlets such as Consumer Reports. When it comes to consumer benefits, the advancement of EV technology will continue to provide cost savings.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
For example, while the average diesel driver spends roughly $9,500 on fuel over five years, a comparable EV driver spends closer to $4,000. The more charging stations that are built — and the more efficient they are — the more affordable that charging will become as well.
And considering the fact that significant tax rebates and incentives are still available, that EV price tag can start to look less intimidating — and more like an excellent and worthwhile way to spend money wisely, reducing your own environmental footprint at the same time.

Carolina Forest woman arrested for causing 2K+ acre wildfire in Myrtle Beach area
Carolina Forest woman arrested for causing 2K+ acre wildfire in Myrtle Beach area
A Carolina Forest woman has been arrested for burning yard debris that is alleged to have ignited the now more than 2,000-acre Covington Drive wildfire in the Myrtle Beach area.
Alexandra Anna Bialousow, 40, was charged by the South Carolina Forestry Commission with negligently allowing fire to spread to lands and violation of regulation of fires on certain lands. Public records show that Bialousow lives on Covington Drive.
Bialousow is accused of not taking the proper precautions to prevent her debris burn from escaping, according to a release from the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
Bialousow appeared in magistrate court Friday afternoon where a judge set her bond at $15,000 – $7,500 for each charge.
Bialousow, who has no criminal history, appeared without an attorney. She told the judge that she has lived in Horry County for about four years and works in therapy at hospitals, schools and assisted living centers.
Witnesses reported seeing Bialousow intentionally start a fire in a backyard fire pit that was close to a tree line within Covington Lakes Subdivision on March 1.
According to the arrest warrant, the suspect “did not have an appropriate water source readily available,” nor did she “have any garden tools on hand to control the fire, thus allowing the fire to spread to land owned by Walker Woods HOA. This incident was witnessed by several neighbors,” the release said.
She was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Thursday.
The Covington Drive wildfire began Saturday afternoon, spreading quickly and moving close to homes and backyards and resulted in evacuations. However, no houses or structures have been destroyed from the fires and there have been no injuries.
Horry County officials said they received the first report of the fire about 2:30 p.m., which was reported near a backyard.
Hory County has had a burn ban for more than a week.
More than half of the 2,059-acre Carolina Forest wildfire has been contained, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

Untethered listening pleasure | The West ***********
Untethered listening pleasure | The West ***********
There’s nothing worse than getting onto an airplane and your wireless noise cancelling headphones not connecting to the seatback entertainment system.
The main reason you’ve brought your own headphones along is for the noise cancelling and the vastly better listening experience you get compared with the cheap disposable ones supplied by the airline — but let’s be honest — being untethered to the seat in front is also much more convenient when someone sitting next to you wants to get past or when you need to get something from the overhead locker.
Thankfully there’s an easy solution. You can buy a small Bluetooth adapter that simply plugs into the headphone port of the plane’s entertainment system. It creates a Bluetooth connection between the entertainment system and your headphones that allows you to connect up to two sets of headphones per adapter
There are many different types available online and from retailers such as JB HiFi and Officeworks.
I like the Twelve South AirFly Pro which sells for around $89 from retailers such as Officeworks and JB Hi-FI. It has a battery life of up to 25 hours and connects with all Bluetooth-based wireless headphones and earbuds. It is also compatible with Bluetooth speakers.

BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday announced retaliatory tariffs on some ********* farm and food imports, after Canada imposed duties in October on ********-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.
The new duties become effective March 20, according to a statement by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council. Additional 100% tariffs will be imposed on ********* rapeseed oil, oil cakes and peas, and additional 25% tariffs will apply to pork and aquatic products.
The tariffs add to global trade tensions already high, with rounds of tariff announcements by the United States, China, Canada and Mexico.

The duties come in retaliation for Ottawa imposing tariffs against ******** imports in October, including a 100% surtax on all ********-made EVs and 25% on steel and aluminum imports.
“Despite China’s repeated opposition and dissuasion, Canada has taken unilateral restrictive measures on electric vehicles, steel, aluminum and other products imported from China without investigation, undermining China-Canada economic and trade relations,” read the statement by the customs authorities.
The decision to impose retaliatory duties comes after an “anti-discrimination probe, which found out that Canada’s restrictive measures against some ******** products have disrupted normal trade order and harmed the legitimate rights and interests of ******** enterprises,” it added.
Canada announced tariffs on ******** goods last August following similar duties being imposed by the U.S. and the European Union against ********-made EVs and other products. The Western governments say China’s subsidies give its industry an unfair advantage.

JFK’s Grandson Trolls Cheryl Hines Over Measles Death
JFK’s Grandson Trolls Cheryl Hines Over Measles Death
John F. Kennedy’s grandson Jack Schlossberg is trolling his cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s wife Cheryl Hines for the recent—and incredibly rare—death of a child from measles in the U.S.
Schlossberg took to Instagram less than a month after deleting his accounts as some sort of penance for insulting RFK Jr.’s voice. Now he’s back, and calling out the Curb Your Enthusiasm star, who seems to have abandoned her own Democratic leanings to support her anti-vax husband’s role as President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary.
“Cheryl Hines, it’s Jack Schlossberg,” he says in the video after apparently emerging from the shower in a towel—a nod to a video Hines posted of RFK Jr. post-shower last November. “We’ve never met, but I’ve got a favor to ask. I need you to call up the family of the child who died of measles and say ‘sorry.’”
“Can you do that for me, *****?” he asks, condescendingly.
Texas, one of the states facing the highest concentration of measles cases in recent weeks, announced its first death from the preventable disease since 2015 late last month. The Texas Department of Health reported that the “school-aged child” was not vaccinated. Its website also reported that the state was coping with 124 confirmed cases of measles since the outbreak began in January, and that 18 people have been hospitalized since then. The WHO and CDC foresaw that measles would become an “imminent threat” in 2022, when the number of unvaccinated children hit a record high of 40 million.
Still, newly sworn-in Health Secretary RFK Jr. has stuck to his unfounded theories about the supposed dangers of vaccines. Asked to comment about the death of the Texas child from the disease, Kennedy said, “It is not unusual” and “Measles outbreaks happen every day.” He then suggested “Vitamin A” as a potential solution to the worsening crisis, even after facing backlash from the administration’s own supporters as the outbreak worsens.
Kennedy ultimately admitted it was “serious” last week.
Schlossberg, perhaps considering his cousin to be a lost cause, trolled Hines instead on Thursday. “Almost every single case of measles is in someone who’s not vaccinated,” he adds in the video.

Dozens arrested after Columbus police’s ‘Operation Unity’ in two neighborhoods
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus Division of Police is sharing stats from a successful ‘Operation Unity’ in the South Linden and King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhoods this week.
Police said the operation was aimed at fixing needs specific to each community in order to make it safer for those who live there. Officers made 12 felony arrests, three misdemeanor arrests, four juvenile arrests, 11 adult arrests, seized eight firearms – two of which had Glock switches on them. They also executed two search warrants and served 26 arrest warrants.
Cold case suspect extradited to Columbus after DNA links him to 1992 *****, *******
Columbus Police commander Scott Evers said they also cleared out nearly 90 complaints from junk motor vehicles to parking complaints to narcotics houses to just anywhere along the spectrum. “So the focus is, you know, the prevention stuff. We made contact with 30 citizens to try to do some prevention discussions with them to make people safer,” Evers said.
Among those complaints included:
30 citizens contact prevention efforts.
He said they also use this operation to talk with community members about prevention efforts. “What are the deep root issues that are causing the crimes and how do we affect those things? And a lot of that’s connecting with resources. So we work with the different city entities, we work with churches, we work with nonprofits. And a lot of it just depends on what the community needs for that specific area based on the issues that we’re seeing,” Evers said.
Multiple drugs were seized as well including more than 260 grams of ********, more than 30 grams of methamphetamine, 62 pills, 50 grams of fentanyl and $4,960 in cash. 10 vehicles were also impounded.

Final-second drama: Cavs cling on for 13th straight win
Final-second drama: Cavs cling on for 13th straight win
The NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers have rallied for their 13th straight victory, with Donovan Mitchell scoring 24 points to help his side prevail 118-117 over the Charlotte Hornets.
Darius Garland added 20 points in Charlotte to help the Cavaliers improve to 53-10.
Miles Bridges scored a career-high 46 points for Charlotte, who suffered their ninth consecutive loss and fell to 14-48.
Bridges had a chance to snatch what would have been a remarkable victory in the final second, but his shot from halfcourt at the buzzer was off the mark.
Cleveland have had three winning streaks of 12 or more games this season, the first time it has happened in the NBA since the 2006-07 Dallas Mavericks.
LaMelo Ball, who played an NBL season with the Illawarra Hawks before graduating to the NBA, tallied 13 points and seven assists before fouling out.
Bridges made 15 of 32 shots from the field and 12 of 13 free throws, but he committed a turnover in the final minute that helped Cleveland secure the win.
Bridges’ three-pointer with 8.1 seconds left gave the Hornets a chance, narrowing the gap to 116-115.
After Mitchell and Bridges exchanged two made free throws, Mitchell missed 1 of 2 with 4.1 seconds left before Bridges’ last-gasp heave.
Cleveland led 67-54 early in the second half and were up 87-83 after three quarters, while Charlotte rallied with a 21-8 run for a 104-95 lead with 5:41 to play.
The Cavaliers responded by outscoring the Hornets 25-15 to end the game.
The Dallas Mavericks, playing their second game since losing Kyrie Irving to a season-ending knee injury, made only one field goal in the final seven minutes while crashing to a 122-111 loss to Memphis.
Ja Morant scored 31 points, including the game’s final seven, and Desmond Bane had 27 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for the visiting Grizzlies.
Reserve Brandon Williams scored a career-high 31 points and Naji Marshall had career bests with 29 points and 17 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have lost four consecutive games and six of their past seven.
Dante Exum banked a brilliant three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mavericks a 94-89 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the visitors were far too good in the final term.
Meanwhile, the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder trumped the Portland Trail Blazers 107-89 at home in arguably their most unlikely win of the season.
Aaron Wiggins scored 30 points and Jaylin Williams delivered his first career triple-double to lift the shorthanded Thunder.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (rest), Jalen Williams (right wrist sprain), Chet Holmgren (right lower leg contusion), Luguentz Dort (right knee soreness), and Isaiah Hartenstein (nasal fracture reinjury) were all missing for Oklahoma City.

Violent and sudden. What a firing squad execution looked like through my eyes
Violent and sudden. What a firing squad execution looked like through my eyes
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — I’ve now watched through glass and bars as 11 men were put to death at a South Carolina prison. None of the previous 10 prepared me for watching the firing squad death of Brad Sigmon on Friday night.
I might now be unique among U.S. reporters: I’ve witnessed three different methods — nine lethal injections and an electric chair execution. I can still hear the thunk of the breaker falling 21 years later.
As a journalist you want to ready yourself for an assignment. You research a case. You read about the subject.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
In the two weeks since I knew how Sigmon was going to die, I read up on firing squads and the damage that can be done by the bullets. I looked at the autopsy photos of the last man shot to death by the state, in Utah in 2010.
I also pored over the transcript of his trial, including how prosecutors said it took less than two minutes for Sigmon to strike his ex-girlfriend’s parents nine times each in the head with a baseball bat, going back and forth between them in different rooms of their Greenville County home in 2001 until they were dead.
But you don’t know everything when some of execution protocols are kept secret, and it’s impossible to know what to expect when you’ve never seen someone shot at close range right in front of you.
The firing squad is certainly faster — and more violent — than lethal injection. It’s a lot more tense, too. My heart started pounding a little after Sigmon’s lawyer read his final statement. The hood was put over Sigmon’s head, and an employee opened the ****** pull shade that shielded where the three prison system volunteer shooters were.
About two minutes later, they fired. There was no warning or countdown. The abrupt crack of the rifles startled me. And the white target with the red bullseye that had been on his chest, standing out against his ****** prison jumpsuit, disappeared instantly as Sigmon’s whole body flinched.
It reminded me of what happened to the prisoner 21 years ago when electricity jolted his body.
I tried to keep track, all at once, of the digital clock on the wall to my left, Sigmon to my right, the small, rectangular window with the shooters and the witnesses in front of me.
A jagged red spot about the size of a small fist appeared where Sigmon was shot. His chest moved two or three times. Outside of the rifle crack, there was no sound.
A doctor came out in less than a minute, and his examination took about a minute more. Sigmon was declared dead at 6:08 p.m.
Then we left through the same door we came in.
The sun was setting. The sky was a pretty pink and purple, a stark contrast to the death chamber’s florescent lights, gray firing squad chair and block walls that reminded me of a 1970s doctor’s office.
The death chamber is less than a five-minute drive from Correction Department headquarters along a busy suburban highway. I always look out the window on the drive back from each execution. There is a pasture with cows behind a fence on one side, and on the other, I can see in the distance the razor wire of the prison.
Armed prison employees were everywhere. We sat in vans outside the death chamber for what I guess was around 15 minutes, but I can’t say for certain because my watch, cellphone and everything else was taken away for security, save for a pad and a pen.
Over to my right, I saw the skinny, barred windows of South Carolina’s death row. There were 28 inmates there earlier Friday, and now there are 27.
That’s down from 31 last August. After a 13-year pause while South Carolina struggled to obtain the drugs for lethal injections, the state has resumed executions. Inmates may choose between injections, electrocution or the firing squad.
I witnessed Freddie Owens being put to death Sept. 20. He locked eyes with every witness in the room.
I saw Richard Moore die Nov. 1, looking serenely at the celling as his lawyer, who became close to him while fighting for his life over a decade, wept.
And I was there, too, when Marion Bowman Jr. died Jan. 31, a small smile on his face as he turned to his lawyer, then closed his eyes and waited.
I remember other executions too. I’ve seen family members of victims stare down a killer on the gurney. I’ve seen a mother shed tears as she watched her son die, almost close enough to touch if the glass and bars weren’t in the way.
Like that thunk of the breaker back in 2004, I won’t forget the crack of the rifles Friday and that target disappearing. Also etched in my mind: Sigmon talking or mouthing toward his lawyer, trying to let him know he was OK before the hood went on.
I’ll likely be back at Broad River Correctional Institution on April 11. Two more men on death row are out of appeals, and the state Supreme Court appears ready to schedule their deaths at five-week intervals.
They would be the 12th and 13th men I’ve seen killed by the state of South Carolina. And when it is over, I will have witnessed more than a quarter of the state’s executions since the death penalty was reinstated.

Formula One: Commentators David Croft and Karun Chandhok eagerly awaiting Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut
Formula One: Commentators David Croft and Karun Chandhok eagerly awaiting Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut
Formula One expert David Croft says Lewis Hamilton’s late-career move to Ferrari represented his best chance to win a record eighth world title.
It came as Croft’s co-commentator Karun Chandhok said Hamilton’s decision to don Ferrari’s famous racing red had created a fresh wave of excitement ahead of his *********** Grand Prix debut.
Albert Park will host seven-time world champion Hamilton’s debut for The Prancing Horse when he takes to the track at the season-opening Grand Prix in Melbourne.
His move to Ferrari comes after 12 trophy-laden seasons with Mercedes, but success has been harder to come by for Hamilton in recent years, with Red Bull star Max Verstappen winning the past four titles.
Croft hailed the pairing of Hamilton and Ferrari as a “match made in heaven” and his partnership with Charles Leclerc could only be a positive for the Scuderia.
“There’s nothing like having a fresh challenge when you’re 40 and if life does begin at 40, it begins at Ferrari for Lewis Hamilton and what better place to begin a new life?” Croft told The West ***********.
“This year is Lewis’s best chance to win an eighth world title because of the stable regulations, because Ferrari got it right towards the end of last year, and because I think they will throw everything and the kitchen sink at winning the title this year.
“Whilst others might have to think a little bit about 2026 and reining back on this year and not developing as much as they would like to, Ferrari will be the one to say ‘no, we need that title, we owe it to Charles and Lewis, so we’ll keep pressing ahead.’”
Croft’s co-commentator and former Hispania Racing and Lotus F1 driver Karun Chandhok agreed.
“Everywhere I’ve walked, gone to the supermarket, the coffee shops, the first question is ‘how do you think Lewis is gonna go at Ferrari?” Chandhok told The West ***********.
“There’s just so much excitement among F1 fans for Lewis at Ferrari.”

Croft did say there would be challenges as Hamilton adapted to the new team, but was confident he would overcome them.
“He’s got to deal with a Ferrari engine for the first time in his career, he’s never raced anything in Formula One that hasn’t been made by Mercedes, so that is a big challenge.
“But with every new job, and everyone can relate to this, there come challenges you do with a smile on your face, you’ve gone there because you want to go there, and you are also buoyed by the fact your new employer wants you there as well.
“Ferrari put their faith in Lewis, Lewis has put his faith in Ferrari, and they will push like crazy to get a good job done.”
Chandhok said it remained to be seen whether the second half of 2024, where Red Bull slipped back to the pack after years of dominance, would be indicative of this year.
“I don’t think it’s so much of which Red Bull are we going to get, it’s a question of have they stopped the slump?” he said.
“They really heavily relied on the brilliance of Max Verstappen to win them the driver’s championship — Max was the best driver last year, there’s no doubt in my mind about that.
“But he was fortunate that at the start of the year, he had a 60-point lead over Lando (Norris), and if he didn’t have that start, he wouldn’t have won the championship, so I’m sure he will be reminding the team of that pretty regularly. They can’t muck about.”
Croft said McLaren star Norris, who had his best season on the grid en route to eight podium finishes, four Grand Prix wins and a second-place finish in the standings, had a better chance at usurping Verstappen than last year.
“He’s a better chance than last year, because I’m expecting his car to be on a par with the leading cars, if not the best car right from the start,” he said.

“Max will start this season in exactly the same way he starts every other season: full of confidence, raring to go, and knowing he is probably the in-form driver, the best driver on current form on that grid.
“That doesn’t mean he can’t be beaten, that if he takes his foot off the gas, others won’t make life very difficult for him.
“In the case of Lando, it was very encouraging to hear him talk about how what happened in 2024 gave him the realisation he was good enough to fight for a title in 2025.
“We maybe see a more elbows-out Lando Norris from the start of this year.”
Croft and Chandhok are returning to Perth to talk all things Formula One for a show at the Regal Theatre on March 17, and a show at Nikola Estate in the Swan Valley the following day.

It is the fourth year in a row Croft has visited Perth, and he said he always looked forward to his visit out west to chat racing with the masses.
“We’ll put (Chandhok’s) ‘Karunapedia’ knowledge to the test, we’ll have a few fun and games and we’ll do a proper debrief on what happened at Albert Park the day before,” Croft said.
“I’ve known Karun for a long time and we’ve been mates for a long time and he is one of the nicest guys you could ever wish to spend two hours with on stage.
“It is less a show, and more a pleasurable evening spent chatting with my mate and a few hundred other mates as well.”

The video starts with two students fighting on the bus, a student in a gray sweatshirt punching down on another student in a dark gray shirt. In the background, the two unauthorized family members are watching the fight.

“You wanna put your hands on my brother,” says the woman as she hits the student.
Once the beating stops, the woman says to the student, “if I have to get back on this bus, I’m gonna kill you.”
The person can then be seen slapping the student before exiting the school bus.

This Bay Area anchor city was ranked as the top place to live for older adults
This Bay Area anchor city was ranked as the top place to live for older adults
The Brief
San Francisco topped a new list of best places to live for adults 50 and older.
The analysis by AARP looked at factors including housing and transportation.
Several other Bay Area cities were recognized in AARP’s list.
SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco has landed at the very top of a list of the best places to live in the U.S. for older Americans.
The analysis by AARP placed the City by the Bay as the number one best “very large” place to live in America for adults 50 years and older.
The index scores cities and communities on seven categories: housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement and opportunity.
The analysis also looks at sub-indicators, including accessibility to quality medical care, grocery stores and affordable housing, as well as social and cultural opportunities, access to exercise, walkability and easy and affordable transportation options.
It’s the fifth time San Francisco took the lead spot in AARP’s annual Livability Index.
By the numbers
San Francisco received the highest score in the health category, receiving an 84 out 100.
It also got high ratings for transportation with a score of 75 points.
‘No perfect community’
Despite being ranked at the top, researchers pointed to the tough issues that have long-faced San Francisco.
“There is no one perfect community,” AARP vice president of family, home and community said, as the report noted the city’s struggles with affordable housing and its homeless crisis.
“However, it excels in areas such as health access, convenient and safe transportation and places to socialize and engage,” researchers said.
San Francisco was joined by other Bay Area “very large” cities to rank among the top best places for adults 50 and older.
Other top Bay Area cities
San Mateo came in 21st place and Alameda was ranked 25th best on the list.
The analysis found that the “very large” communities that made the list had high marks for having close access to so-called essentials like grocery stores and parks.
“They also were recognized for their lively, engaged neighborhoods,” the AARP said.
Cities and communities considered in the “very large,” category had a population of 500,000 and up.
Category of ‘large’ communities
Bay Area cities also made the list in the report’s ranking of the best places to live for “large communities.”
Berkeley and Marin made that list, coming in 20th and 25th place, respectively.
“Large communities” were defined as those with a population of 100,000 to 499,999.
The top spot in that category went to Arlington, Virginia.

The AARP report listed a total of 100 communities, under four categories based on population.
In addition to “very large” and “large,” the rankings were for “medium communities,” with a population of 25,000 to 99,999, and “small” communities, those with a population of 5,000 to 24,999.
There was no Bay Area presence in the rankings for best medium and small communities for older adults.

Las Vegas mother of 4 killed in suspected DUI ******
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Nearly 48 hours after a ****** that took her life, a Las Vegas mother’s story was displayed using two photo frames: one held by her fiancé, the other by her four children.
Las Vegas police responded Wednesday to a ****** just before 9 a.m. at South University Center Drive and East Twain Avenue. According to police, video evidence showed a driver in a Chevrolet running a red light when a woman crossing the sidewalk was hit.
The woman identified by family as Jessica Fodge, 31, was walking back home after dropping her children off at their school, according to family members who spoke with 8 News Now.
A woman died following a ****** on March 5, 2025, along South University Center Drive and East Twain Avenue. (KLAS)
“The car came and hit her and pinned her up and killed her right here,” Devon Mayers, the victim’s fiancé, said. “So, we are all out here now showing our respect.”

Fodge was described by the family as a devoted mother of four children, ages ranging from six to nine—who are now left without a mom.

“Mommy, I did not want you to die,” Fodge’s daughter said. “I just didn’t want you to die because I wanted you to be here and I also love you every day.”
8 News Now spoke with several members of the family and verified the gofundme account, titled: “Aid Devon & His 4 Children After DUI Tragedy,” which has been organized by Mayers’ sister, Chanell Dudley, set to help support Fodge’s four children.
“I just want to pay for her ********,” Mayers said. “I don’t want to cremate her because her kids want to see her again.”
According to the police, the ****** involved a 2025 Chevrolet Trax and a woman walking on foot. Evidence at the scene showed the Chevrolet driver ran a red light while making a wide turn, hitting a woman who was crossing on the sidewalk, police said. (LVMPD)
The driver, identified by police as Gerardo Lopez, was arrested and faces charges of suspicion of impairment and reckless driving and is being held on a $250,000 bail; a court date has been set for Mar. 11, according to court records.
Love of outdoors, hairdressing, kids
Surrounded by family at a Central Las Vegas Valley apartment, Mayers remembered the moment he met Fodge through Instagram.
“We end up talking on there for a little about little while, and then we end up meeting, and we end up moving in, and that’s when we had our first baby,” Mayers said. “Right when we met each other, we clicked, and it’s been going good ever since, and that’s why we had all these little guys.”
The four children said their mother would spoil them with visits to Chuck E. Cheese. Fodge’s six-year-old daughter said she missed her mom as she kissed her photo again and again.
“If we can’t bring the kids, we can’t go, *******,” Mayers said. “She wants to do things with the kids. She likes museums. She likes going out. She’s the outdoorsman.”
Fodge had an interest in medicine and was planning on receiving her education to become a registered nurse, according to Mayers.
“She really wanted to do she really wanted to complete nursing school and become a doctor,” he said. “Because she really loved saving people.”

Chalmers takes first-round lead at Cologuard Classic
Chalmers takes first-round lead at Cologuard Classic
*********** Greg Chalmers shot a seven-under-par 64, his best career round on the PGA Tour Champions, to grab the early lead at the Cologuard Classic in Tucson.
Chalmers rolled in eight birdies, including four of his final six holes, and had just one bogey at La Paloma Country Club for a two-shot edge over fellow countryman Rod Pampling, Canada’s Stephen Ames and South Africa’s Ernie Els.
Chalmers, 51, is in his second season on the tour and is searching for his first victory.
“I’ve got a lot of good processes in place and just hit good shots and we’ll see what the score it is,” Chalmers said. “… I’m just going to try to keep hitting good shots and see the putts fall in and we’ll see what happens.”
He was particularly pleased with how he closed his first round.
“Just a really quality iron shot on the 17th,” Chalmers said. “I hit a seven-iron that I actually faded in there about eight feet right of the hole, really tricky read and I managed to make that.”
“Then I had a lob wedge into 18 and I hit that six feet left of the hole and made that. That was a makeable putt for me, left-right putt. It’s just a combination of some good shots, and they’re downwind today, so a little more friendly.”
Els, the World Golf Hall of Famer, had a busy scorecard with six birdies, three bogeys and a chip-in eagle at the par-5 16th. Ames and Pampling went bogey-free.
A five-way tie for fifth at four-under 67 featured Jason Caron, Tim O’Neal, Stewart Cink, South Africa’s Retief Goosen and Australia’s Mathew Goggin. Defending champion Joe Durant opened with a one-under 70.
