Codemasters confirms layoffs as EA-owned studio shifts focus away from beloved rally games
Codemasters confirms layoffs as EA-owned studio shifts focus away from beloved rally games
Codemasters has confirmed an unspecified number of layoffs, following the news that it’s “pausing” development on its historic rally game franchises.
Earlier this week, Codemasters – which was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2021 – confirmed it had ended its partnership with the World Rally Championship (WRC), and that it would thus be “pausing” development plans for future rally titles.
In a statement to VGC, the EA-owned studio has now confirmed that layoffs will occur, as well as the redeployment of staff to different areas of EA Sports.
“As a business, we are constantly evolving to meet the growing needs of our players and driving greater focus across our portfolio,” a spokesperson said. “This has led us to look at reducing some roles, while we redeploy as many as possible against our strategic priorities.”
A day earlier, EA confirmed cuts across its wider workforce, reportedly affecting up to 400 employees. *** employment law requires EA to consult *** employees for a minimum of 30 days before making any redundancies, including exploring ways of avoiding them.
Codemasters’ exit from the rally game business ends a decades-long run, which started with the first Colin McRae game in 1998, and later included the DiRT and WRC games.
EA acquired Codemasters for $1.2 billion in early 2021, having trumped a previously accepted offer to buy the company made by Rockstar owner Take-Two.
The acquisition brought Codemasters’ F1 and FIA World Rally Championship licenses, and its owned IPs Grid, Dirt and Project Cars, under the same roof as EA’s Need for Speed and Burnout franchises.
Discussing the strategic rationale behind the deal prior to its completion, EA said it would create “a global leader in racing entertainment” and enable it “to release new racing experiences annually”.
In 2022, Codemasters’ Dirt 5 team in Cheshire was integrated into fellow ***-based EA studio Criterion Games “to create the future of Need for Speed”.
Some of Codemasters’ recent releases in the F1 and WRC franchises have reportedly struggled commercially.

GTA 6 Budget Will Cost Rockstar Games a Whopping $2 Billion? Debunking the Rumors
GTA 6 Budget Will Cost Rockstar Games a Whopping $2 Billion? Debunking the Rumors
Not many game series can claim to have had this much impact on the gaming world, like the GTA series. It has been a healthy dose of chaos with all those open worlds, layered storylines, and freedom to do almost anything. Now, it has been quite a long time since everyone has been waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6, and the rumors around it are getting wilder as the delay continues.
GTA 6 is expected to be the pinnacle of the open-world adventure and storyline games, and it is worthy of the hype, too. This means that the developers have had and continue to have a hard time delivering everything that is expected and beyond. But amid all these, rumors are swirling that Rockstar is investing a whopping $2 billion in making the game, which has left everyone in disbelief. Is this the most expensive entertainment product ever created, or just another wild internet rumor? Let’s find out.
Debunking GTA 6’s rumored $2 billion budget
GTA 6 | Credit: Rockstar Games
In September 2022, Rockstar Games experienced something that can only be described as a developer’s worst nightmare. More than 90 gameplay clips of GTA 6 in early development were leaked on the internet, where raw, unfinished gameplay footage could be seen that was quite authentic as well. Rockstar confirmed that a breach had happened but didn’t reveal any financial details.
Moreover, there were some alleged screenshots of conversations with the hacker behind the leak. It was claimed that the hacker got access to everything, like GTA’s source code, sensitive consumer data from major companies, etc. Among them, the hacker casually dropped the figure of $2 billion, claiming it was GTA 6’s budget. This alleged amount included development, marketing, post-launch content, and potential DLCs.
If we put this in perspective, GTA 5 was already a massive production, and it reportedly cost around $265 million. Red Dead Redemption 2, which took about 8 years to be made, reportedly cost $540 million. Literally the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa took around $1.5 billion to construct. If this rumor is true, we are talking about a video game that costs more than some countries’ annual GDP.
How much could GTA 6 actually cost players?
GTA 6 | Credit: Rockstar Games
Well, after this massive budget, even though it is a rumor, it is natural to be worried about how much players will need to shell out to play the game. Based on current industry trends and speculation, the standard edition of GTA 6 is expected to cost between $70 and $90 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Some fans fear that the standard edition will cost around $150. Adding fuel to this overpricing speculation, a Swiss retailer named Brack briefly listed GTA 6 pre-orders at 99 Francs, which is approximately $112. However, that’s unlikely. Rockstar knows pricing out fans would be a bad move. Or it could be placeholder pricing or a regional markup.
Given GTA 6’s rumored status as an “AAAA” title, its huge open world, and promised cutting-edge features, Rockstar might actually set a new pricing benchmark with their most hyped game ever. However, one thing that is for sure is that players need to be prepared, as GTA 6 could actually be more expensive than any previous installments in the series.
GTA 6’s new release date
GTA 6 | Credit: Rockstar Games
It seems like waiting all these years for GTA 6 was not enough already. Rockstar Games has recently announced that the most-awaited installment in their blockbuster series won’t be arriving in 2025 as they initially promised. Now, players will need to wait until May 26, 2026, which is almost 13 years since GTA 5 was released.
Rockstar followed the classic developer apology playbook. They acknowledged that the delay was “later than you expected,” called the fan excitement “truly humbling,” and thanked everyone for their “ongoing support and patience.”
But why the delay? Rockstar is apparently aiming for perfection. The company claims that the extra development time is needed “to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” So far, all anyone has seen of the game is a single trailer released in late 2023, although Rockstar has promised to share more information “soon.”
What might be more frustrating for some players is that GTA 6 will only be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. PC gamers and those still using previous-generation consoles will either need to upgrade their hardware or wait for potential ports.
This exclusive availability on current-gen consoles possibly suggests that Rockstar is creating a technically ambitious game that is incompatible with older technology, which also somewhat explains some of the rumors about its massive budget.

Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch digest Reform *** local election surge
Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch digest Reform *** local election surge
The Labour and Conservative parties are digesting the results of England’s local and Mayoral elections after Reform *** made major gains at their expense.
With counting complete, Nigel Farage’s party took control of 10 local councils, won two mayoral races and added a fifth MP by taking Runcorn and Helsby.
Sir Keir Starmer conceded people were not yet feeling the benefits of a Labour government, while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch pledged to make her party a “credible” alternative once again.
Farage hailed the results as “the end of two-party politics” and “the death of the Conservative party”.
Writing in The Times, Sir Keir said the lesson learned from the elections was not that the country needed “ideological zealotry”.
“It’s that now is the time to crank up the pace on giving people the country they are crying out for,” he said.
But some within Labour have called for the prime minister to change direction, saying the decision to cut winter fuel payments to all but the poorest pensioners put off voters.
Labour MP Rachael Maskell called on the government to ditch the cuts, telling BBC Breakfast: “We have got that mandate, I believe, as a party to look at how we can better redistribute wealth, as opposed to taking out of the pockets of the poorest.”
With the results all in, Badenoch apologised to the defeated Conservative councillors, saying: “I am going to make sure that we get ourselves back to the place where we are seen as the credible alternative to Labour.”
Writing in The Telegraph, she said: “I’m deeply sorry to see so many capable, hard-working Conservative councillors lose their seats. They didn’t deserve it – and they weren’t the reason we lost.”
The results were worse than Conservatives had feared, with the party not only losing votes to Reform but also to the Liberal Democrats.
It lost 676 seats and control of all the 16 authorities it was defending.
Roger Gough, former Conservative leader of Kent County Council, told the BBC’s Today programme that the Tories had a huge job to do.
“We are still under the shadow of what happened when we were in government, that’s a shadow that was over us when we went to the national polls last year and it hasn’t lifted,” he said.
“There’s a genuine pressure between coming up with serious answers, which will in some cases take time, and establishing a credible position in the shorter term.
“Clearly that’s not happened so far, that’s why so many of us paid the price electorally over the last couple of days.”
On the Today programme, shadow chief treasury secretary Richard Fuller insisted that Kemi Badenoch would be the party’s leader in a year’s time.
He added: “The Conservative party has to think deeply about policies that are going to work, make sure we’ve got the people to put them in place, then regain trust.”
On whether the Tories may need to look at an electoral pact with Reform ***, he said: “There won’t be pacts. Nigel Farage has been very clear that he wants to destroy the Conservative Party.”
The Lib Dems also saw significant gains, with 163 seats. They seized Shropshire from the Tories and gained control of Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire after both previously had no party in overall control.
They also became the biggest party in Hertfordshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Devon, where they narrowly fell short of an overall majority.
Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey said the party had supplanted the Conservatives as the “party of Middle England”.
The party’s education spokesman, Munira Wilson, told the Today programme that the party was “standing up for British values both locally and nationally”.
She said: “It’s the party that will work on the issues that people care about, whether that’s the health and care services or fixing pot holes, or the party that will stand up for British interests on the world stage and will stand up to the likes of Donald Trump.”
The Green Party made some gains, winning 43 seats in total, however it suffered disappointment in the West of England mayoral race.
Green peer Baroness Jenny Jones told Radio 5 Live the party had increased councillors every year over the past eight years.
“It seems an era of five party politics is happening and that’s very good for us, because as soon as people see it is not a choice between the Labour or Conservative, they start looking around for policies that suit them,” she said.

The Rocket Nerfs Are So Bad, Even the Bots Are Begging Arrowhead to Stop the Madness
The Rocket Nerfs Are So Bad, Even the Bots Are Begging Arrowhead to Stop the Madness
The battlefield between Super Earth’s finest and the enemies of democracy in Helldivers 2 has expanded to a new front: Reddit. In a bizarre twist that would make even High Command raise an eyebrow, Automaton units appear to have gained sentience, created Reddit accounts, and started complaining about recent weapon nerfs.
Yes, you read that correctly. The mechanical menaces threatening our glorious democracy have apparently learned how to type, and they’re using this newfound skill to whine about how their rockets aren’t as deadly as they used to be.
And honestly? Their complaints are absolutely hilarious.
When robots learn to use social media
The Helldivers 2 subreddit has become ground zero for what can only be described as the most peculiar psychological warfare campaign in the history of managed democracy. Players roleplaying as Automatons have flooded the forum with posts detailing their struggles against the mighty Helldivers after Arrowhead’s recent balance changes.
One particularly amusing post from a Rocket Devastator perfectly captures the essence of this bizarre trend:
The post is a masterclass in satire that would make Super Earth’s propaganda department proud. For months, Helldivers have been diving for cover at the mere sight of a red laser dot, only to be obliterated seconds later by a barrage of rockets that could level a small democracy. Now that the tables have turned, the “bots” are throwing a mechanical tantrum.
It seems the Automatons have been taking notes from their human adversaries. After countless missions of hearing Helldivers scream “THAT’S BULLSH*T!” into their mics after being one-shot by a rocket from across the map, they’ve decided to give us a taste of our own medicine.
Even the Automaton tanks are getting in on the action:
Comment byu/ADyingPerson from discussion inHelldivers
While some are taking their frustrations to new heights, with language that would make even that upcoming Terminid Dragon unit blush:
Comment byu/ADyingPerson from discussion inHelldivers
The sheer rage in this post perfectly captures how players felt about Automaton rockets pre-nerf. The irony is delicious—like a perfectly cooked democracy burger with extra liberty sauce.
The comedy circuit of Super Earth
Freedom isn’t free, but the comedy is. | Image Credit: thegameawards/YouTube
The Helldivers 2 community has always had a knack for turning pain into comedy. After all, when you’ve been crushed by a supply pod called by your own teammate for the fifteenth time, you either laugh or uninstall. These Automaton roleplayers are taking that tradition to glorious new heights.
Not all Automatons are unhappy with the changes, though:
Comment byu/ADyingPerson from discussion inHelldivers
Ah yes, the classic “git gud” response, but from a robot’s perspective. It’s nice to see that toxic gaming culture transcends species barriers. Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us they had relations with our motherboards.
Speaking of which, it seems the Automatons have their gooners too, confirmed by this absolutely cursed comment that will haunt our circuits for days:
Comment byu/ADyingPerson from discussion inHelldivers
Some players seem genuinely confused by the sudden influx of posts from the perspective of liberty’s enemies, to which another player helpfully replied with the kind of lore-friendly explanation that would make High Command proud:
Comment byu/ADyingPerson from discussion inHelldivers
At this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if Arrowhead added an official “Automaton Complaint Department” stratagem in the next update. Maybe a special mission where you have to deliver tissues to crying robots? The possibilities are endless.
The great nerf-buff cycle of Helldivers 2 will continue, but at least we can all laugh together—humans and machines alike—at the absurdity of it all. One day, the rockets are too strong, the next they’re useless, and somehow we’re all still diving into this beautiful chaos day after day.
Are you team Human or team Automaton in this hilarious debate? Drop your thoughts in the comments below—just make sure you’re not actually a robot in disguise. Super Earth is watching.

Ubisoft’s Most Horrendous Game Is Headed to Switch 2
Ubisoft’s Most Horrendous Game Is Headed to Switch 2
With just a month to go until the Nintendo Switch 2 hits shelves on June 6th, the hype has officially reached fever pitch. Pre-orders? Vanishing faster than a shiny Pokémon. Games? Plenty. But one title showing up at the station caught everyone off guard: Star Wars Outlaws from Ubisoft.
Yes, that one. The same game that stumbled through 2024 like a stormtrooper trying to hit a target is now heading to Nintendo’s next-gen handheld on September 4th. It’s a plot twist no one saw coming, and reactions are ranging from skeptical and cautiously optimistic.
Star Wars Outlaws: A galaxy far, far below expectations
By now, the tale of Star Wars Outlaws is infamous. What was supposed to be Ubisoft’s next big title ended up delaying Assassin’s Creed Shadows, shook investor confidence, and contributed to a rough financial year for the publisher.
There’s no denying, the game had promise. Its open-world environments were richly detailed, and the idea of living out a scoundrel’s story in the Star Wars universe was appealing. But once players stepped in, the illusion crumbled (harder than the Death Star blowing up).
The AI was embarrassingly stupid at times, bugs ran rampant, from visual glitches to full-on crashes, and the mission structure felt lazily repetitive, like a checklist from a design-by-numbers template.
And then there’s the fatigue. Not just from Ubisoft’s increasingly tired open-world formula, but from the Star Wars brand itself. With recent films and series leaving fans divided, Outlaws landed with a dull thud rather than a galactic bang.
Yet, here we are. Ubisoft is giving the game a second shot, this time on Nintendo’s most powerful handheld yet. The question now is: why?
Why bring it to Switch 2?
Star Wars fatigue? Buggy launch? Repetitive missions? Yup, the game had it all. | Image Credit: Ubisoft
To Ubisoft’s credit, the past several months have seen a slew of patches and improvements. The Switch 2 version might be the game’s best form yet: stable, polished, and more suited to bite-sized sessions. After all, exploring a galaxy far, far away on the go does have its appeal.
What’s puzzling, though, is that Outlaws is the only Ubisoft title currently confirmed for Switch 2. You’d think Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which has rebounded with strong previews and sales, would be the no-brainer pick.
Or even Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is stealthily making its presence known, would have been the obvious choice. At first glance, the decision seems odd, but when you look at the timeline, it starts to add up.
AC Shadows was delayed to March 20th, and the early consensus about the title was bad, if we’re being generous. That would have made Outlaws the “safer” bet for a port, even if it wasn’t the most loved. And since it is launching on September 4th, it’s pretty clear that it was likely the case.
Adm primeiro! Queria um que começa com “Ray” e termina com “man Legends” #UbisoftBrasil pic.twitter.com/m8uQR6rwYG
— Ubisoft Brasil (@UbisoftBrasil) May 1, 2025
However, fresh leaks and regional ratings hint at upcoming ports for AC Shadows. And now that developers are also teasing AC Mirage and Rainbow Six Siege ports, it’s clear that Outlaws might just be the first of several Ubisoft titles heading to Nintendo’s new handheld.
So yes, it’s strange. And yes, Outlaws may still be remembered as one of Ubisoft’s biggest stumbles. But who knows? Maybe on a handheld, it will feel less like a disaster and more like a second chance.

SpaceX Launches Falcon 9 Rocket With 28 Starlink Satellites Into Orbit From Florida
SpaceX Launches Falcon 9 Rocket With 28 Starlink Satellites Into Orbit From Florida
SpaceX had sent another batch of Starlink satellites on their way on Thursday to assist in keeping up the quick expansion of its global broadband network. Rising from Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, a Falcon 9 rocket took to the skies at 9:51 p.m. EDT on May 1 (0151 GMT on May 2). This mission goes by the name Starlink 6-75, and it dispatched 28 satellites to low Earth orbit (LEO). This mission is an addition to the already growing constellation, which aims to provide high-speed internet across the world, except the polar regions, via user-pointed terminals.
SpaceX Adds 28 Starlink Satellites to Global Network
As per a Space.com report, the rocket’s nine Merlin engines shut down about two and a half minutes after liftoff, followed by stage separation. The first stage, booster B1080, performed a retrograde burn and safely landed eight minutes later on the Just Read the Instructions drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The landing was the 18th successful flight for B1080 and its 12th for Starlink missions. The second stage continued toward its payload orbit to deploy its satellite payload.
The upper stage achieved its targeted orbit and released the 28 satellites one hour after liftoff. These satellites will drift into their “operational” slots over the next few days. Once in orbit, they will mesh with the existing Starlink megaconstellation of over 7,200 satellites, creating a near-global mesh that will allow constant connectivity for customers who can point their terminals at the satellite array. It’s SpaceX’s 51st Starlink mission of the year and the company’s 34th Falcon 9 launch of 2025. And the two Starship test flights in 2025 by SpaceX only further affirm its edge on launch pace and commercial space infrastructure development. The steady pace is evidence of the company’s ambitions to dominate low Earth orbit communications.
SpaceX is inching ever closer to achieving its mission of providing high-speed internet to every corner of the planet, thanks to yet another successful launch that brought it closer to that goal and brought new commercial spaceflight and rocket reuse milestones within reach.

Tunisia jails ex-prime minister on terrorism charges
Tunisia jails ex-prime minister on terrorism charges
A court in Tunisia has sentenced former Prime Minister Ali Laarayedh to 34 years in prison on a raft of terrorism charges.
He is the latest high-profile critic of the president to be jailed as campaigners slam “sham trials” in the country.
The 69-year-old is a prominent critic of President Kais Saied and leader of the popular Ennadha party – the biggest in parliament – which promotes Islamist ideals.
Along with seven other people, Laarayedh was charged with setting up a terrorist cell and helping young Tunisians travel abroad to join Islamist fighters in Iraq and Syria.
“I am not a criminal… I am a victim in this case,” he wrote in a letter to the court’s prosecutor last month, according to the AFP news agency.
He was sentenced on Friday.
Laarayedh has consistently denied any wrongdoing and said the case was politically motivated.
In recent weeks, at least 40 critics of Tunisia’s president have been sent to prison – including diplomats, lawyers and journalists.
Rights groups say these trials have highlighted Saied’s authoritarian control over the judiciary, after dissolving parliament in 2021 and ruling by decree.
Since he was first elected six years ago, the former law professor has rewritten the constitution to enhance his powers.
Laarayedh was arrested three years ago and campaigners had called for his release –including Human Rights Watch, who said the affair seemed like “one more example of President Saied’s authorities trying to silence leaders of the Ennahda party and other opponents by tarring them as terrorists”.
Ennahdha governed the North African nation for a short while after a popular uprising dubbed the Arab Spring.
The protest movement originated in Tunisia – where a vegetable-seller called Mohamed Bouazizi set fire to himself in despair of government corruption – and mass demonstrations soon spread across the wider region in 2011.
However many Tunisians say the democratic gains made have since been lost, pointing to the current president’s authoritarian grip on power.
Yet President Saied has rejected criticism from inside and outside the country, saying he is fighting “traitors” and suffering “blatant foreign interference”.

Labor spruiked its economic credentials throughout the campaign, with Mr Albanese and his cabinet pointing to wages growth and downward pressure on inflation.
They pushed a last minute downturn in underlying inflation this week as “proof” the Albanese government’s economic plan was working.
With mortgage holders hopeful of another rates cut on the horizon, the latest inflation figures poured cold water on Peter Dutton’s claims the economy was worse-off under the man he hoped to oust.
The Opposition Leader was also forced to abandon and walk back several policies, including his plan to scrap work from home arrangements for hundreds of thousands of public servants.

Mr Dutton’s flagship savings plan to slash 41,000 public servants in Canberra also came under fire, with experts saying it was impossible without carving into national security and other essential services the Coalition had promised not to touch.
Over the 35-day campaign, Mr Albanese promised to pump billions into Medicare to boost bulk-billing rates and get more Australians onto the property ladder while building more homes.
Voter turnout was robust, with long queues reported at polling stations — particularly in Melbourne — despite a high rate of early voting.

Review – Neptunia Riders Vs. Dogoos (PS5) | WayTooManyGames
Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes:
“When it comes to the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise, you never quite know what Idea Factory and Compile Heart might have up their sleeve next. One year fans of the franchise might see their favorite Goddesses fighting in an action game or taking part in a pseudo turn-based RPG, and the next they might find them in a rhythm idol game or even a strategy RPG. One thing is sure though, almost every year sees the release of a new game featuring Neptune and her friends in some form. Some of these cards that Idea Factory has played have been Aces that, despite not being main entry games, match that level of storytelling quality while others have been Jokers that land flat. This time around we have a motorcycle action title in the form of Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos but the question is, is this spin-off a success or a wipeout?”

Trump Takes a Surprise Dig at Elon Musk After Tesla CEO’s White House Exit
Trump Takes a Surprise Dig at Elon Musk After Tesla CEO’s White House Exit
Donald Trump took an awkward dig at his “first buddy” Elon Musk just days after the billionaire left the White House.
The president was speaking in front of graduating students at the University of Alabama on Thursday when he boasted that the Tesla CEO—and his Silicon Valley colleagues—have started “kissing my a–.”
He made the comments during a wide-ranging speech in which he offered advice and received raucous cheers while describing his actions to crack down on transgender women in sports.
But it was during a moment the president was talking about fixing a “broken system” when he took an unexpected dig at his DOGE pal.
“Change is never easy, and the closer you get to success, the more ferociously those with a vested interest in the past will resist you they want to resist,” Trump began.
“You have to break the system a little bit and follow your own instincts. But if your vision is right, nothing will hold you down, nothing. You have to have the right vision.”

Trump then boasted about the types of “internet people” who vehemently opposed him during his first term who now support him—naming one billionaire in particular.
“If you look at some of these internet people, I know so many of them. Elon is so terrific, but I know now all of them, you know, they all hated me in my first term, and now they’re kissing my a–,” Trump said.
“You know… it’s true. All of them. It’s true,” the president added.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk wears a cap with the words
Musk and Trump had publicly dissed each other years before their current partnership.
In 2022, the pair clashed after Musk suggested that Trump was too old to become the next U.S. president and that he needed to “sail into the sunset.”
Trump fought back, claiming Musk would have gotten on his knees and “begged” for help.
“When Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all of his many subsidized projects, whether it’s electric cars that don’t drive long enough, driverless cars that ******, or rocketships to nowhere, without which subsidies he’d be worthless and tell me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican, I could have said, ‘drop to your knees and beg,’ and he would have done it,” Trump wrote.
The pair eventually grew close, and while Trump generally speaks fondly of Musk, he has mocked him in months past.
“Elon won’t go home. I can’t get rid of him,” Trump said in November 2024. “Until I don’t like him.”
That moment seems to have come, with Musk packing up his working space at the White House and moving his focus back to his floundering automaker Tesla this week.
“Instead of meeting with him in person, I’m talking to him on the phone, but it’s the same net effect,” White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles told the New York Post in an interview discussing the Trump administration’s first 100 days.
“He’s not out of it altogether. He’s just not physically present as much as he was,” Wiles said.

Western end Auckland’s streak, secure home ALM final
Western end Auckland’s streak, secure home ALM final
Auckland FC’s 14-game A-League Men undefeated streak is over with Western United pulling off a confidence-boosting 4-2 upset.
Michael Ruhs punished the premiers from a poor turnover to open the scoring on Saturday at Ironbark Fields in the 18th minute before Noah Botic and Angus Thurgate hit the scoresheet.
Auckland substitutes Neyder Moreno and Jesse Randall scored in the 62nd minute and five minutes into added time respectively to keep the home side alert.
But a goal by Western United’s Oliver Lavale in the final minute settled the matter.
The result was not enough for Western United to realise their Asian Champions League Elite aspirations after Melbourne City defeated Sydney 2-0 earlier on Saturday to seal second place in the final home-and-away round.
John Aloisi’s side at least seal third place (47 points) and a home elimination final next week against Adelaide United.
Auckland and City will enjoy a week off before hosting the first of a two-legged semi-final.
It was the first time the ****** Knights had suffered a defeat since their 1-0 loss to Perth Glory in January this year.
Ruhs found the back of the net when opposition midfielder Marles Francois, receiving the ball from Nando Pijnaker, gave up possession under hot pressure from Western United’s Tomoki Imai.
With the Auckland defence rattled, Ruhs easily slotted for the opener in injured striker Hiroshi Ibusuki’s absence.
Ibusuki is expected to make his return from a calf injury next week.
Botic slotted his 12th goal of the season with a header in the 23rd minute following a corner kick.
A superb pass from Riku Danzaki looped over defender Pijnaker before Thurgate buried for the home side’s third goal in the 49th minute.
Western United’s win comes after welcome news of KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of real estate moguls KAM Sports, taking a majority stake in the club and parent company Western Melbourne Group.
The club, whose finances have been under a microscope in recent months, also received a three-window ban from FIFA on registering new players earlier in the week.

Memory Palace – The New York Times
Memory Palace – The New York Times
The first poem I memorized was “Pinkle Purr” by A.A. Milne. I was around seven years old when I encountered it and was immediately enchanted. It’s a children’s poem, four stanzas, all with the same hypnotic AA/BB/AA rhyme scheme. It’s a poem about a kitten, Pinkle Purr, and his mother, Tattoo, and their changing relationship as Pinkle Purr grows up, a sort of “Cat’s in the Cradle” for kids, but less sad.
I don’t remember making any effort to memorize it; I just read the poem so many times that it worked its way into me, such that I knew it as well as I knew the theme songs to my favorite TV shows. I’d walk around muttering to myself, trying out different voices and syllable stresses: “Tattoo was the mother of Pinkle Purr/A little ****** nothing of feet and fur;/And by-and-by, when his eyes came through,/He saw his mother, the big Tattoo.” It was meditative, comforting, an internal metronome that I naturally returned to when I returned to myself.
Perhaps because I started memorizing poems early, before I was forced to do so in school, I never perceived the process as onerous, but rather as a fun challenge, a way to take something I loved and make it a part of me. As a graduate student, I memorized Galway Kinnell’s “Little Sleep’s-Head Sprouting Hair in the Moonlight,” lines from which still regularly surface in my brain unbidden — “Kiss the mouth / that tells you, here, / here is the world” — even though I can’t recall the whole thing anymore. I love that, amid the practical information and persistent worries and memories good and bad, my mind’s archive contains these bits of beauty, lyrics that float up into consciousness, lovely echoes.
This past week, The Times Book Review ran a weeklong challenge to help readers memorize Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “Recuerdo,” replete with games and videos. (Ethan Hawke’s recitation of “We were very tired, we were very merry, / We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry” is delightful and dramatic; I’d like to hear him do “Pinkle Purr.”) I’m obviously the exact audience for this type of thing, but even if you’re the sort who thinks of memorizing verse as homework, I think this challenge will make you reconsider. The poem is dazzling, and the challenge’s structure makes it almost effortless to absorb it. I love what A.O. Scott and Aliza Aufrichtig write in their introduction: “At a time when we are flooded with texts, rants and A.I. slop, a poem occupies a quieter, less commodified corner of your consciousness. It’s a flower in the windowbox of your mind.”

An invasive venomous ant is spreading in the US — here’s where people should watch out because a sting can be fatal
An invasive venomous ant is spreading in the US — here’s where people should watch out because a sting can be fatal
Neighborhoods across the Southeast need to be on the look out for venomous Asian needle ants this summer – and be warned its sting can be deadly.
People may suffer from an allergic reaction after a sting that can send them to the hospital without treatment. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, a weak or rapid heart rate, vomiting, hives, fainting and tongue swelling.
“We are now considering it a medically important pest,” Dan Suiter, an Orkin distinguished professor of Urban Entomology at the University of Georgia, told Fox Weather this week.
He said that the number of calls from individuals who suffered from the reaction, also known as anaphylaxis, have prompted the shift. Last year, Suiter said he received three such calls.
“It gets a little bit more serious when the sting of an insect can be life-threatening to people who suffer anaphylaxis,” he explained.
The species, which is native to Asia, has been found in the U.S. for 90 years, but its population has exploded recently. Just how many of the ants there are today remains unknown, but they have historically been found in forest areas. They’re found largely in the eastern U.S., including the Carolinas, Georgia, Indiana, and Alabama. However, have also been sighted as far north as New York and Washington.
The Asian needle ants are coming out this summer across the eastern U.S. They can cause a potentially deadly allergic reaction. (NIH/NC State)
The ants’ stings “work to their advantage in gaining new territory,” according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They are not picky about where they live, and can thrive in forests and urban environments. In neighborhoods, they nest under doormats or in potted plants, with colonies ranging from a few dozen ants to as many as a few thousand. They eat termites, but also go for human garbage.
“This behavioral versatility is allowing the Asian needle ant to move into forests, rural areas, and urban environments at the same time. And because it can tolerate cooler temperatures, it could spread into a broad range of territory,” the association’s Dr. Mary Bates said.
While the ants aren’t naturally aggressive, they may sting if they end up in clothes or if someone places a hand on top of one, researchers at Clemson University noted.

“During their swarming season, the chance of receiving a random sting increases because the females are more likely to land on an individual or get trapped in clothing. Often people are stung when brushing an ant off their skin. If an ants lands on you, it is best to flick it off, rather than brush it off,” they said.
The swarming season typically stretches from the spring to late summer.
If someone has been stung, there’s no way to predict who will experience anaphylaxis and who will not. However, people who have reacted adversely to other insect stings and carry an Epipen should remain alert. A sting from the Asian needle ant is somewhat more likely to cause an allergic reaction than the venom in a honey bee’s sting, according to North Carolina State University.
While the pests are tiny, the risk of a sting can be mitigated by cleaning up and keeping wood dry and off the ground.
“During swarming season, it commonly enters homes and other buildings. To reduce the chance of them coming in from their outdoor habitats, well-fitted screens on doors and windows will be helpful,” the Clemson researchers added.

LIV leader DeChambeau faces another final-round test
LIV leader DeChambeau faces another final-round test
Bryson DeChambeau will win his first LIV Golf event of the year if he can avoid another final-day capitulation, having taken a four-stroke lead after two rounds in South Korea.
Crushers GC’s Bryson DeChambeau and Taylor Gooch of Smash GC shared the lead after shooting seven-under 65s on Friday.
But as Gooch battled to a second round of one-under 71 on Saturday, DeChambeau maintained his hot start while producing six birdies to card a six-under 66.
“Just giving myself plenty of chances, and if I continue to do the same, it will be a great Sunday,” he said.
“So got to focus on having fun and playing like a kid.”
The two-time major winner is sitting pretty at 13 under, with Cleeks GC’s Richard Bland (nine under) his closest rival at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon.
DeChambeau seemingly enjoyed the course more than the previous LIV tournament at Club de Golf Chapultepec, where cameras captured him complaining about the “worst f***ing bunkers ever”.
The American led at the start of the third and final day in Mexico, only to collapse with an even-par 71 to finish three strokes behind winner Joaquin Niemann.
That stumble was his first outing since this year’s memorable Masters meltdown.
DeChambeau took the lead early in the final round at Augusta before unravelling to finish three-over 75, four strokes behind Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.
*********** Lucas Herbert is tied ninth in South Korea at six under, having squandered a chance to rise further up the leaderboard on Saturday with bogeys on the 12th and 16th holes in a five-under round of 67.
Herbert’s Ripper GC captain Cameron Smith finished Friday one-over 73 but enjoyed a much better second day out, carding six-under 66.

Russia declares state of emergency at port after Ukrainian drone attack on Novorossiisk
Russia declares state of emergency at port after Ukrainian drone attack on Novorossiisk
MOSCOW (Reuters) – The mayor of the Russian port city of Novorossiisk declared a state of emergency on Saturday after local authorities said a Ukrainian drone attack had damaged a grain terminal and several residential buildings, injuring five people.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, whose air force said Russia had attacked Ukraine overnight with 183 drones and two ballistic missiles.
Andrei Kravchenko, the mayor of the Russian ****** Sea city of Novorossisk, was shown inspecting damage to three apartment buildings in video released on his official Telegram account.
The video showed debris scattered in front of apartment buildings, a crushed car, blown out windows and balconies hanging off the buildings’ facade.
Kravchenko said one of the injured people, a woman, was in hospital in a serious situation. Two children had also been injured, local authorities said.
The governor of Russia’s southern Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratyev said that debris from falling drones had also damaged three storage units at a grain terminal in Novorossiisk, sparking a fire.
Nobody had been injured, he said.
Delo Group, the owner of the damaged grain terminal, said in a statement that a clear-up was underway and that a fire there had been extinguished.
“DeloPorts terminals is operating normally in accordance with internal instructions and the instructions of relevant authorities and agencies,” the company said.
