More Neolithic Stone Circles Found on Dartmoor, May Form “Sacred Arc”
More Neolithic Stone Circles Found on Dartmoor, May Form “Sacred Arc”
Archaeologist Alan Endacott has devoted the last two decades to searching for new stone circles in Dartmoor, a vast stretch of relatively desolate moorland in the uplands of Devon in southern England. For the second time, Endacott’s efforts have produced exciting results, as he and a team of volunteers just recently unearthed the ruins of two 5,000-year-old stone circles in Taw Marsh near Belstone, a small village in northern Devon.
The most prominent of these monumental stone circles is near Metheral Hill, and accordingly Endacott is calling this one the Metheral stone circle. This monumental circle includes 20 stones, most of which have fallen, and it measures 130 feet by 110 feet (40 meters by 33 meters) in size. Intriguingly, the newly unearthed formation appears to bear some resemblance to Stonehenge with respect to its design and layout.
Endacott’s ongoing efforts to discover new stone circles in Dartmoor is part of a larger research project that is the focus of his doctoral dissertation. There is an impressive concentration of stone circles to be found all across Dartmoor, and Endacott’s theory is that many of them are part of an interconnected “sacred arc” of formations that represent a sacred landscape structure of huge dimensions, dating back to the Neolithic *******.
Metheral Hill, very near the location where the Metheral stone circle was discovered by Alan Endacott. (Derek Harper/CC BY-SA 2.0).
“Dartmoor would have been very different then, there would have been a lot more forest cover,” the archaeologist said in an interview with the Guardian. “So possibly they were markers in the landscape, they recognised the higher ground and wanted to kind of enclose it for some reason.”
Sacred Secrets of Dartmoor Revealed
So far, Alan Endicott’s research has focused on the northeastern part of Dartmoor in particular, where he believes the outline of this sacred arc is most evident. The newly discovered circle at Metheral Hill fits nicely into the map he has been making of the surrounding landscape, while the second circle he and his team found is located just outside the boundaries of the present outline. Given its interesting location, Endacott is operating under the assumption that this circle might have functioned as an entrance or gateway to the larger sacred arc.
Like many other stone circles on Dartmoor, the newly discovered circles likely would have been constructed in approximately 3,000 BC. They then could have been modified during the Bronze Age, by inhabitants of the region who wanted to leave behind their own sacred and artistic legacy for future generations to behold.
“It [the Metheral circle] is suggestive of a Neolithic henge monument of a similar form to the Stipple Stones on Bodmin Moor, the Ring of Brodgar on Orkney, or even the earliest phase of Stonehenge,” Endacott explained, demonstrating his immense knowledge of the ***’s ancient monument builders. “People moved long distances in that *******, so the people who built the stone circle at Metheral might also have been to Stonehenge and even possibly to Orkney. They traveled quite widely; there were lots of contacts between them with trading and so on.”
The Metheral circle and its companion are only the second and third new circles to be discovered on Dartmoor in the last century. Fittingly, it was Alan Endacott who also found the first, back in 2007 when he uncovered the ruins of an undocumented circle near Sittaford Tor, about five miles (eight kilometers) to the south of Metheral Hill.
It was his discovery of the Sittaford circle, which sits at a higher altitude than any other monumental formation in southern England (1,720 feet, or 525 meters), that motivated Endacott to expand his quest to prove the validity of his sacred arc theory. The new circles do seem to add new evidence in support of his hypothesis, which certainly does make sense given the fascination of Late Neolithic and Bronze Age peoples with the construction of enduring stone monuments with spiritual and astronomical connections.
One Man’s Mission: To Find All the Stone Circles of Dartmoor
Alan Endicott is the founder and curator of the Museum of Dartmoor Life, which is located in Okehampton. He is dedicated to doing everything he can to promote the wonders of his home region, which seems largely deserted now but was a hub of activity during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.
His relentless search for more stone circles, and efforts to interpret their true meaning, is a part of his commitment to discovering all the secrets Dartmoor is still hiding.
“Since Sittaford I’ve been doing lots of systematic searches,” he said. “You’ve got to get off the beaten track to find anything new on Dartmoor.”
Alan Endacott and team in the field near Metheral Hill. (Alan Endacott: Sittaford Stone Circle and Dartmoor Ritual Landscape Project/Facebook).
But find something new he did, and he is convinced that more undiscovered circles are waiting at strategic locations along the route of his sacred arc.
“These excavations exceeded my expectations and brought new evidence to light that will help with our understanding, but inevitably they have also raised more questions about why they were built. There are definitely other sites that I want to follow up on. We won’t be stopping any time soon.”

Haiti aid flights to resume after planes hit by gunfire
Haiti aid flights to resume after planes hit by gunfire
The UN Humanitarian Air Service will restart flights within Haiti after around a week’s hiatus and resolving regulatory issues, according to a statement from the World Food Programme, which manages the service.
The ******* Nations paused flights to Haiti’s capital last Tuesday, a day after gangs struck three commercial planes with gunfire, prompting the US aviation regulator to ban US airlines from flying to the conflict-ravaged Caribbean nation for 30 days.
“UNHAS provides passenger and light cargo transport in Haiti for the entire humanitarian community, including local and international NGOs,” the World Food Programme said in a statement, adding that the suspension had not affected food supplies.
Haiti’s government helicopter also resumed services on Monday, transporting three new government ministers following a cabinet shake-up last week that saw the prime minister ousted and many of his top ministers replaced.
Even as the flights restarted, armed ********* continued in parts of the capital Port-au-Prince such as Lower Delmas.
The majority of Port-au-Prince is under the control of armed gangs who have been making gains in recent weeks while a long-delayed partially deployed UN-backed mission to reclaim territories and ensure aid deliveries continues to stall.
On Sunday, UN migration agency IOM estimated more than 20,000 people were displaced across the capital in four days, marking the largest mass displacement in over a year.
“The isolation of Port-au-Prince is amplifying an already dire humanitarian situation,” the IOM Haiti chief Gregoire Goodstein said in a statement, adding that only 20 per cent of the capital was accessible to humanitarian workers.
“Our ability to deliver aid is stretched to its limits. Without immediate international support, the suffering will worsen exponentially,” he said.
UNICEF Haiti chief Geeta Narayan said more than half of the 20,000 displaced were children, who were facing the “compounded impacts of malnutrition, cholera outbreaks, severe psychological distress, and all too often, tragic loss of life”.
The IOM estimated that as of early September over 700,000 people had been internally displaced in the country, while the IPC, a benchmark index of food insecurity, has reported worsening shortages with some 6000 people facing famine-level hunger.

Chile’s ‘seed guardians’ preserve forgotten plant varieties
Chile’s ‘seed guardians’ preserve forgotten plant varieties
STORY: These are Chile’s “seed guardians”.
They’re an emerging group of farmers and growers trying to protect the traditional crops of their ancestors.
They collect, trade and plant hundreds of seeds to preserve forgotten varieties of vegetables…
…Plants that were historically farmed by the indigenous Mapuche people.
“Our work is to rescue all these forgotten seeds. Nobody reproduces them anymore. They were not reproduced because of the plants’ own characteristics.”
Guardian Ana Yanez says the vegetables they’re trying to save are dwindling…
…due to environments – or farmers opting for higher-yield varieties.
Experts like agronomist Ricardo Pertuze say that preserving diverse varieties of crops is key for areas affected by climate change.
“When there is a climate change, that change in climate causes the variety previously well adapted to a location to become unadapted. Therefore, the breeder is going to have to look for a new variety to do that. But in order to find that new variety, he needs the genetic diversity of the previously saved seed.”
The guardians have been finding clients in high-end restaurants around the country.
Pablo Caceres is a seed guardian and chef – who says he normally doesn’t find more than five varieties of tomatoes at markets.
But this year – he says he’ll have 26 varieties, and that the group is adding more every year.

Henry Cavill is Being Attacked by The Witcher Fans for Trying to ******** the Show Way Before His Exit
Henry Cavill is Being Attacked by The Witcher Fans for Trying to ******** the Show Way Before His Exit
Netflix’s The Witcher is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, which follows the story of Geralt, who’s a supernatural ****** hunter as a Witcher. The show has proven to be an incredible hit, but things are looking gloomy for its future.
Henry Cavill’s contributions to the series were incredible. (Image via Netflix)
For three seasons, every gamer’s hero, Henry Cavill, who himself is a fan of The Witcher, led the series as Geralt, but in 2022, it was revealed that the actor would be departing the series due to disagreements over the direction of the show. While this was truly disappointing news, many in the community believe his ideas would’ve led to the downfall of the show.
Henry Cavill Saved The Witcher Series With His Vision
Few in the community state that Henry Cavill diverted from the source material. (Image via Netflix)
When Netflix got things going with The Witcher and Henry Cavill’s casting was revealed, the actor didn’t have the backing of the fandom. Many questioned the decision, and though it took some time, Cavill convinced them that’s the man for the job.
Cavill’s departure from the show was truly a disappointing moment. Apparently, he wanted to stay faithful to the series’ source material, but that vision didn’t sit well with the producers of the show. However, on the series’ official subreddit, many believe that Cavill was the weak link when it came to the project.
While these fans acknowledge Cavill’s talent in portraying Geralt, they believe that he isn’t the greatest defender of the source material, and he didn’t leave the show because he couldn’t see the injustice being done to the books.
The post mentions how Cavill had a tendency to frequently change or cut lines that often contradict Geralt’s nature in the books. Although Cavill did suggest some emotional lines, his reaction to ******’s ****** was also a disappointment to some. The actor’s decision to oppose the romantic relationship or Yennefer and Geralt’s intimacy scenes is also said to be inconsistent and does not follow what’s been mentioned in the book.
Sure, some of these points might hold some weight when you look at Cavill’s interviews. However, let’s not forget the fact that adaptations for any series change, and Cavill’s decisions may have reflected what he thought of Geralt, not disregarding the source material in any way.
The lack of wordy Geralt was often compensated by Cavill’s decision to rely on facial expressions. Although Cavill’s suggestions for ******’s ****** scene were different, they did end up leading to a huge emotional impact on viewers, which we can’t forget.
Downplaying Triss’ romantic arc was crucial to maintaining the source material’s devotion to Yennefer. Removing Yennefer and Geralt’s intimate scenes helped them foster an emotional connection over a physical bond, which was crucial to the characters.
The Witcher 4 Might Release Soon
New rumors are surfacing around The Witcher 4‘s release date. (Image via CD Projekt Red)
It’s going to be interesting to see how well the next of The Witcher manages to do after Cavill’s departure. However, on the game side of the franchise, things are starting to heat up.
Currently, Project Polaris is being dubbed The Witcher 4. Developer CD Projekt Red hasn’t confirmed if the brand-new trilogy will continue the adventures of Geralt of Rivia or let some new protagonist take the spotlight. However, it’s often been stated that the monster hunter might still appear in some way even if the player isn’t controlling him.
We’re likely to learn more about the next chapter in The Witcher franchise as the game gets closer to release, and a brand-new ***** suggests when that might happen. A placeholder page for the title appeared out of nowhere on GOG.com.
According to this placeholder, the release date of the game looks to be December 31st, 2025. While this doesn’t translate to the game releasing in 2025, it’s not uncommon for upcoming titles that don’t have a release date to put the last date of the year as their expected launch frame.
There’s a high chance that the game might launch sometime in 2026 or 2027. Before that, we’ll need a trailer. The developer hasn’t said much about the project since its announcement in 2022 but could see a trailer at the upcoming Games Awards 2024 event.
With that said, do you think Henry Cavill was the true savior for The Witcher series? Let us know in the comments below.

We’re starting to understand why some people regain weight they lost
We’re starting to understand why some people regain weight they lost
It can be hard to keep weight off
Tero Vesalainen/Getty Images
People with obesity who lose weight often put it back on, which may partly be driven by lasting changes to the DNA within their **** cells, a discovery that could one day lead to new treatments.
Around 85 per cent of people with overweight or obesity who lose at least a tenth of their body weight regain it within a year.
That is partly because it is hard to maintain low-calorie diets for a long ******* of time, though that probably plays a relatively small role, says Laura Catharina Hinte at the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland. “It can’t be that we all don’t have enough willpower to maintain lost weight.”
Studies have also shown that the brain interprets a sharp drop in body **** as dangerous and responds by making the body ***** less energy.
To learn more about this process, Hinte and her colleagues analysed **** tissue collected from 20 people with obesity just before they had bariatric surgery, which shrinks the stomach to make people feel fuller sooner, and again two years later, when they had lost at least a quarter of their initial body weight. They also looked at **** tissue from 18 people with a healthy weight.
The researchers sequenced a type of genetic molecule called RNA, which encodes proteins, in **** cells. They found that people with obesity had increased or decreased levels of more than 100 RNA molecules compared with people of a healthy weight, and these differences persisted at two years after weight loss.
These changes seem to ramp up inflammation and disrupt how **** cells store and ***** ****, both of which raise the risk of future weight gain, says team member Ferdinand von Meyenn, also at the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
To explore whether these RNA changes might drive rebound weight gain, the researchers first confirmed that similar changes persisted after obese mice lost weight. They then fed these mice and mice of a healthy weight a high-**** diet for one month. While the previously obese mice gained 14 grams of weight, on average, the other mice gained just 5 grams.
The team also found that **** cells from the previously obese mice took up more **** and sugar when grown in a lab dish than those from the other mice. Together, the results show how obesity-linked RNA changes may increase future weight gain, says von Meyenn.
Finally, the team found that molecular tags, or epigenetic marks, on DNA in the **** cells seemed to drive the obesity-linked RNA changes. These alter RNA levels by changing the structure of the DNA that encodes them.
While the study didn’t look for these molecular tags in the people they studied, or examine whether they regained the weight they lost, the findings probably translate from mice to humans, says Henriette Kirchner at the University of Lübeck in Germany.
This is based on similarities between the physiology of these species and how the environment can change the way their genes work, known as epigenetics, she says. In the decades to come, drugs that target epigenetics could help treat obesity, says Kirchner.

China’s Tencent sees opportunity in female Honor of Kings mobile gamers
China’s Tencent sees opportunity in female Honor of Kings mobile gamers
Tencent’s Honor of Kings mobile game drew a record 33,000 fans to watch a final competition in Beijing on Nov. 16, 2024.
CNBC | Evelyn Cheng
BEIJING — ******** gaming giant Tencent is ******** on a rise in female players worldwide for its mobile game Honor of Kings, which rolled out to the U.S. and other countries in June.
Already a hit in China, the game drew a record 33,000 fans to a Beijing stadium on Saturday to watch two teams compete for a $3 million grand prize.
Surprisingly, many in the crowd were young women, reflecting how interest in mobile games has broadened out from the stereotypical male player in the days of console and PC gaming.
Launched in China in November 2015, the game’s appeal ***** in its easy learning curve and relatively short sessions of around 15 minutes. Anyone with a smartphone can play for free in real time, on the go.
“Honor of Kings became an important way for me to socialize,” said Tianyun Gao, according to CNBC’s translation of her spoken Mandarin. She started playing the game in 2017 as a sophomore in college and became a professional commentator for the game’s competitions a year later.
Gao, an English major from Shanghai, has moderated Honor of Kings’ competitions in two languages, including an international event held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, in August. She said her hope is to see esports become as mainstream as traditional sports, noting that one of her inspirations is a ******** soccer commentator.
Tencent ramped up its global expansion plans for Honor of Kings this year, with its subsidiary, Level Infinite, in February announcing a $15 million investment in developing the game’s tournament worldwide.
An international version of the game has been available since 2016 under different names such as Arena of Valor, but the latest global push for Honor of Kings began in 2022. The game didn’t reach the Middle East until earlier this year and only launched in the key markets of North America, Europe and Japan in June.
Less than a month later, the game topped 50 million downloads outside China, according to the company.
Overwhelmingly mobile-focused
Growth in gaming among women stems largely from their preference in playing on their smartphones, without having to invest in consoles and other technology.
“Nearly half of female players play only on mobile platforms so we have a huge addressable audience,” said Jackie Huang, head of the Honor of Kings global esports division within Tencent Games’ TiMi L1 Studio. “Women make up a significant part of our player base but we want to see this continue growing.”
He said that 45% of gamers globally are women, and that the gender composition of Honor of Kings’ users is “relatively balanced. “We strive to provide users, no matter how they identify, with [a] high quality gaming experience,” Huang said.
Gaming is Tencent’s biggest revenue driver, with international games accounting for around 28% of the its overall gaming business in the third quarter.
The company also owns Riot Games, a developer whose PC-based League of Legends has become one of the most popular names in global esports with its own annual competition. Honor of Kings, which claims 100 million players a day, uses a similar format with two teams of five players each.
Such multiplayer games are the second-most popular category for female gamers, behind puzzles, said Xiaofeng Zeng, China-based vice president at gaming research firm Niko Partners. His analysis found that 95% of women prefer mobile games.
If Honor of Kings can hold first place in China, and achieve that position overseas, then Tencent can generate half its revenue from international markets, Zeng said. He said the game’s top overseas markets by revenue are the U.S., India, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
And in the key market of Southeast Asia, Zeng said that due to a low base, female players are growing two to three times more quickly than male gamers. A newly branded Honor of Kings global championship was held last month in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, with Malaysian team ****** Shrew Esports winning the $300,000 first prize.
Early stages
For now, no matter how popular Honor of Kings may be among women, the competitions remain dominated by men. The two teams competing in Beijing on Saturday consisted only of male players.
Huang pointed out that the global championship this year featured a female player from France’s Team Vitality, which is also managed and coached by women.
He attributed the Honor of King’s popularity among women to the game’s playable characters that are also female. Many of the figures, each with different powers, are based on ******** historical or mythological figures.
In 2021, organizers of the Honor of Kings competition in China also launched a tournament for female players. This year’s womens finals are set to take place in December, with a prize of around $41,000 for the winning team.
“The pandemic was a large accelerator of females into the games space and we have continued to see increased engagement from female gamers,” said Chirag Ambwani, SVP, gaming and entertainment, at SensorTower, which focuses on mobile games.
Reasons include specialized and easy to access content, he said, adding that gaming participation grew overall.
As for Honor of Kings’ global expansion, Ambwani said SensorTower research showed “healthy growth,” with average revenue of more than $5 per user in the U.S. and Canada.

Syncing up time crystals can help harness energy

To store energy with a time crystal, make it a double. A mathematical analysis shows that putting two time crystals into a coordinated state could create a quantum battery-like device.
Time crystals differ from other quantum states of matter by having a structure that repeats in time – they cycle through the same set of configurations over and over without any energy input. Though physicists once worried that this would violate fundamental laws of physics and render them impossible, over the course of the past decade researchers have created…

A Georgia appeals court on Monday canceled until further notice ***** arguments on an effort by President-elect Donald Trump and other co-defendants to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the ********* election interference prosecution against them.
The Georgia Court of Appeals acted on its own in canceling the arguments scheduled for Dec. 5. The court did not explain its reason for the move.
Three other ********* cases against Trump have been put in limbo since the *********** won the presidential election nearly two weeks ago.
Trump and the other defendants are charged in state court in Atlanta with ******* related to their attempt to undo his 2020 election loss in Georgia to President Joe Biden.
Earlier this year, the judge in the case, Scott McAfee, allowed DA Willis to remain on the case despite revelations that she had had a romantic relationship with a top prosecutor assigned to the case.
Trump and other defendants had appealed that ruling, and the Court of Appeals in June halted proceedings in the case pending the outcome of that effort.
A New York state judge in Manhattan last week delayed until Tuesday ruling on whether to toss out guilty verdicts against Trump in his ********* hush money case there. The Manhattan DA’s office had asked the judge for the delay, citing the need to evaluate how Trump’s electoral win affects the case, where he is awaiting sentencing.
The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to dismiss two other ********* cases against Trump because of his election.
In one of those cases, Trump is charged in Washington, D.C., federal court with ******* related to trying to overturn Biden’s 2020 win in the national election. The judge in that case has paused proceedings in the case at the request of the top prosecutor, special counsel Jack Smith.
In the second case, Trump had been charged in Florida federal court with ******* connected to his retaining classified government documents after leaving the White House in January 2021 and with obstructing efforts by government officials to recover those records.
The Florida case was dismissed earlier this year by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who had been nominated to her seat by Trump.
Smith is appealing Cannon’s decision. But last week he asked the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to suspend proceedings in that case, citing Trump’s election victory. That federal appeals court granted Smith’s request.

Skulls of Jigsaw Murders victims found in Edinburgh University archive
Skulls of Jigsaw Murders victims found in Edinburgh University archive
University of Edinburgh
An X-ray of Isabella Ruxton’s skull was a crucial piece of evidence in the case
A search has been launched for the families of two women ******* 90 years ago in the Jigsaw Murders, after their skulls were rediscovered in a university storeroom.
The deaths of Isabella Ruxton and Mary Rogerson in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, made headlines around the world in 1935.
The case broke new ground in forensic science when Edinburgh University helped build evidence against Dr Buck Ruxton, who was hanged for his wife’s *******.
The university has now discovered that the skulls and other bones are still in its archive. It is trying to trace the women’s relatives to ask if they wish these to be returned.
Professor of anatomy Tom Gillingwater said: “We want to do the right thing by Isabella and Mary and, if appropriate, return them to their families so they can be ***** to rest.”
The university decided to issue a public appeal through the BBC instead of approaching the families privately, because it is not known whether Isabella and Buck Ruxton’s three orphaned children were ever told that their father had been hanged for murdering their mother.
University of Edinburgh
The two women were reported missing by Mary Rogerson’s family
The killings – which became known as the Jigsaw Murders – took place in September 1935.
Newspaper reporters flocked to Dumfries and Galloway after dismembered and disfigured human ******** were discovered beneath a bridge over a stream.
The ******** were sent to Edinburgh University, where forensic scientists and colleagues from Glasgow University pieced together the body parts.
As they carried out their gruesome task, another investigation was under way 100 miles south in Lancaster, north west England.
Dr Buck Ruxton had given various explanations for the disappearance of his wife Isabella and their nursemaid Mary Rogerson.
The popular GP had been jealous of his wife’s friendship with other men.
She had accused him of domestic ****** before she vanished but local police had taken no action.
Mary and Isabella were reported missing by Mary’s family, not by Ruxton.

Ruxton stood trial five months after the bodies were found
Investigators in Scotland made the link between the two women and the ******** which were found near Moffat.
The bodies still had to be identified beyond doubt and their *******, who was known to have experience of surgery, had taken great care to make that as difficult as possible.
Ruxton’s efforts to avoid justice were defeated by groundbreaking forensic techniques which confirmed the ******** were those of Isabella and Mary.
The identification was crucial to the prosecution case in what was described as “the trial of the century”.
Ruxton went into the dock at the Assize Court in Manchester five months after the bodies were found.
University of Edinburgh
A new technique for analysing fingerprints was used to identify Mary Rogerson
The jury was shown an image of Isabella that the scientists had superimposed on an X-ray of one of the skulls from the ravine – the first time such evidence had been used in court. They were a chilling match.
The trial was told that a new technique for analysing fingerprints had been used to identify Mary.
The scientists had also studied insects found on the bodies to establish the date of their deaths.
Ruxton was convicted of murdering his wife. He had also been accused of ******** Mary but the charge was dropped before the trial.
Two months after he was found guilty, huge crowds gathered outside Manchester’s Strangeways Prison when he was ********* by hanging.

Crowds gathered outside Strangeways Prison when Ruxton was *********
Former assistant chief constable Tom Wood has written a book on the case, entitled Ruxton: The First Modern *******.
“It was one of the most important ********* investigations of the 20th Century, not because of the horror of the case and the dismemberment of the bodies, but because of the forensic science,” he said.
“Put simply, anything before the Ruxton case was ancient history. Anything after the Ruxton case is modern, integrated, forensic science-led investigation.”
In the decades that followed, the women’s bones were held in Edinburgh University’s huge anatomical collection, stored in boxes in a vault alongside evidence from the case.
The assumption is that they were retained for further medical research.
Tom Wood says it was one of the most important ********* investigations of the 20th Century
Prof Gillingwater and Tom Wood both argue that this decision should be viewed in the context of the ethical standards of the time.
“If you’re asking me if I would have done the same thing with my 21st Century lens, absolutely not,” said Prof Gillingwater.
“But at the time what those scientists did in this investigation was remarkable and revolutionary.”
Mr Wood believes it is unlikely the woman’s families knew they were holding funerals without all of their loved ones’ ********.
“I can understand why they did it. These were men of science,” he said.
“These were men who were determined to improve ********* investigation and they would have used these body parts to do that.
“This was not some cruel disregard. These ******** were kept for the advancement of science.”
Isabella and Mary’s ******** had been kept in a university storeroom
Prof Gillingwater says the ******** were “found or re-found” after a student in the Netherlands asked about the archive.
“The overriding feeling was that OK, these are not perhaps being treated with the full level of care and respect that we would want,” he said.
The university was told by the Scottish government that its possession of the ******** was legal – but it decided to establish whether they should be returned to the women’s families.
However, that created another dilemma.
Isabella and Buck Ruxton’s three young children were fostered and it is not known if they were ever told how their parents *****.
Mary Rogerson is known to have relatives in the Morecombe area, while Isabella’s sister Jeannie Nelson was living in Edinburgh at the time of the *******.
Prof Tom Gillingwater has asked any relatives to contact the university
After consulting experts on ethics, the university decided to issue an appeal through the BBC.
“The guidance was very clear, that we should not be approaching people who may not be aware that they were related to these ladies,” said Prof Gillingwater.
“If there are any relatives of Isabella or Mary who believe that they would like to have the ******** returned to them, we would be delighted to talk to them about what the next steps might be.”
The university says any discussions will be held in strictest confidence and the families should not feel under pressure to come forward.
They can make contact through a section on the university’s website.

Rainbow Six Siege is getting PC and console cross-play next month
Rainbow Six Siege is getting PC and console cross-play next month
Ubisoft is finally adding Rainbow Six Siege cross-play between PC and console.
Support for cross-play on all platforms will launch in December with Rainbow Six Siege’s Year 9 Season 4 update, Operation Collision Point.
It will let players matchmake with friends no matter what platform they’re playing on, but if there’s a PC player in the squad, then the team will always be in the PC matchmaking pool.
Cross-play and cross-progression for Rainbow Six Siege was originally enabled for PC, Amazon Luna and a Stadia version of the game in June 2021.
Cross-play was then made available between Xbox and PlayStation consoles in late 2022, when cross-progression was also enabled across all platforms.
“Player Protection advances this season include Mousetrap Penalty adjustments to account for crossplay, automatic match cancellation if a cheater is detected, an overhaul for the Reputation center, and AI text moderation,” Ubisoft said.
Operation Collision Point will also introduce a special new variant of the ballistic shield for Blackbeard, plus balancing updates for Ying and Sens, among other features.
Ubisoft said last month that Rainbow Six Siege has generated over €3.5 billion since its release in 2015.
In comparison, the entire *********’s Creed franchise has generated around €4 billion since it debuted in 2007.

Original Tomb Raider Made Angelina Jolie Go Through the Same Sh*t Sophie Turner is Facing Amid Casting Rumor
Original Tomb Raider Made Angelina Jolie Go Through the Same Sh*t Sophie Turner is Facing Amid Casting Rumor
The recent resurgence in live-action video game adaptations has seen studios trying to recreate the success of beloved titles on television. Tomb Raider is one of the most iconic video game franchises in history, and it has long bridged the gap between these two industries, finding success in both. So, it was only a matter of time before another series would be made about it.
Prime Video TV series is going to cast Sophie Turner in the role of Lara Croft. | Image Credit: Crystal Dynamics
This time, Amazon Prime Video has taken on the task of creating the series, with Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner rumored to play the titular role of Lara Croft. As more details about the show emerge, it’s hard to ignore the parallels to what happened when Angelina Jolie was cast as Lara Croft in the original 2001 film: the conversation centered on the physical appearance of the actress.
Turner Facing the Same Issue Angelina Jolie Faced With Tomb Raider Adaptation
The casting of Lara Croft has always come with intense scrutiny, especially when it comes to her physical appearance. | Image Credit: Crystal Dynamics
Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of the iconic adventurer was a defining moment in the early 2000s, and for many, she is still the face of Lara Croft. Her rebellious, independent spirit nature was similar to the character. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the casting came with intense scrutiny, particularly about Jolie’s appearance.
For those who don’t know, Lara Croft, in the video game, is known not only for her intelligence, bravery, and athleticism but for her almost exaggerated body proportions, particularly her bust size. So, when the film adaptation was announced, the conversation immediately turned to whether Jolie would match the character’s physical look. As per E! News, Jolie said:
I’ll make it real simple. I’m a 36-C. In the game, she’s a DD. In the movie, she’s a D. We split the difference.
Even though the film was a success as it grossed over $131 million domestically and pushed Jolie to superstardom, it also set a precedent for how much the fans care about the character’s body, rather than her brains or bravery. Fast forward to 2024, and the same trend is re-emerging as the Tomb Raider TV series was announced by Amazon Prime Video.
Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, is almost confirmed to be cast as Lara Croft. The series is being written and executive produced by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, rather than looking forward and getting excited about a fresh new take on the character, the buzz is focused on whether will Turner’s body matches the video game’s version of Lara Croft.
Could Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Vision Change the Narrative?
Waller-Bridge has a unique opportunity to reshape how Lara Croft is perceived. | Image Credit: Crystal Dynamics
The scrutiny of Lara Croft’s actresses is far from a new phenomenon. The very first Tomb Raider video game defined the protagonist with exaggerated proportions, setting the precedent of how she should look (even in adaptations). However, this is where the new Prime Video series, co-executive produced by Waller-Bridge, could make a significant difference.
As the creator of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge has built a reputation for creating complex, multi-dimensional female characters who defy categorization. She can bring that same depth to the character of Lara Croft by showing a new version of Croft that is less defined by her body and more by her intellect, courage, and emotional growth.
The hope is that this adaptation will focus on Croft as a woman who has more to offer than just her physical appearance. So, as Sophie Turner potentially steps into Croft’s boots, she has the perfect opportunity to shift the narrative.
Turner has already proven her acting capabilities, especially through her portrayal of Sansa Stark, so she can help fans focus on what truly makes Lara Croft an enduring, empowering character.
In the end, it’s not about the **** size or the body type, Lara Croft should be defined by her bravery and complexity. If the industry is serious about empowering women, it’s time to show that true strength ***** in a character’s mind, heart, and spirit, rather than her measurements.

Super Micro Computer names BDO as auditor, files Nasdaq compliance plan
Super Micro Computer names BDO as auditor, files Nasdaq compliance plan
(Reuters) -Super Micro Computer on Monday named BDO USA as its auditor and said it has submitted a plan to the Nasdaq seeking additional time to regain compliance with the listing rules, sending its shares soaring 27% in extended trading.
In the compliance plan, the AI server maker said it will be able to complete its annual report for the year ended June 30 and its quarterly report ended Sept. 30, but did not give a target date.
“BDO is a highly respected accounting firm with global capabilities. This is an important next step to bring our financial statements current, an effort we are pursuing with both diligence and urgency,” CEO Charles Liang said.
The company’s shares began 2024 on a high note, buoyed by Wall Street’s optimism over the AI-driven demand for its high-performance data center servers. This was reinforced by Super Micro’s inclusion in the prestigious S&P 500 index.
Super Micro’s listing came under threat after it ******* to file its annual 10-K report by the August deadline. The delay came a day after Hindenburg Research disclosed a short position and alleged “accounting manipulation”.
It had cited a need to assess “its internal controls over financial reporting” for the delay.
Super Micro’s shares closed up nearly 16% on Monday after a report earlier in the day said the company intends on submitting a plan with the Nasdaq.
The Nasdaq regulations provided a grace ******* until mid-November to submit a remediation plan to regain compliance.
If approved, this could extend the deadline to February next year. However, analysts said the timeline appeared to be squeezed after EY resigned as Super Micro’s auditor in October.
Pending the review of Super Micro’s compliance plan, its shares will remain listed on the Nasdaq.

Astro **** and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth lead the 2024 Game Awards nominees
Astro **** and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth lead the 2024 Game Awards nominees
The 2024 Game Awards nominees have just been announced and a broad mix of 96 different games, teams and individuals picked up nods across a range of categories. As ever, though, many folks are sure to be riled up about what did and did not make the cut.
— the second installment of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy — and the utterly wonderful lead the way with seven nominations each. , a fantasy JRPG from the Persona 5 team, is right behind with six nods, while the excellent poker-esque roguelike and the Silent Hill 2 remake have five each.
Save for Silent Hill 2, all of those are shortlisted for the Game of the Year prize. The other two contenders are ****** Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. The latter is an (admittedly huge) expansion for the event’s 2022 GOTY winner, though the DLC’s inclusion in the top category this year may be controversial to some.
According to the ceremony’s , “Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination. Factors such as the newness of the content and its price/value should be taken into consideration.” A jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets from across the globe determines the nominees.
PlayStation received more nominations than any other publisher this year with 16. Square Enix and Xbox landed 12 each, while ***** snagged 11. Bandai Namco received seven and Nintendo has six.
It’s always great that a bunch of great, deserving indie games are recognized. It’s perhaps not too surprising that Balatro picked up so many nominations (many of the Engadget crew still can’t put that game down), but it’s lovely to see , , , , UFO 50 and landing some as well. Meanwhile, the Best Adaptation nominees are Arcane, , Knuckles, Like a Dragon: Yakuza and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
A public vote is now open for all categories at . The nominees for the entirely fan-voted Players’ Voice award will be revealed on December 2. The Game Awards 2024 ceremony takes place on December 12, though many people will be watching for big trailers and game announcements rather than to find out the award winners.

I tried out this extension to bring my followers from Twitter to Bluesky, and it completely changed my experience
I tried out this extension to bring my followers from Twitter to Bluesky, and it completely changed my experience
There’s a massive exodus of Twitter users to Bluesky
A new extension lets you transfer over Twitter follows to Bluesky
Sky Follower Bridge makes the Bluesky experience far better
It’s no secret that there’s been a massive exodus of X (formerly Twitter) users for a variety of reasons. Some are political, the main being users seeing the social media site shifting more right-wing in terms of content and rule creation and enforcement, which had slowly been taking effect but has now accelerated since X owner Elon Musk’s appointment to a new position in Donald Trump’s incoming government.
Other reasons are more function-oriented, like declining site stability, changes to features like Block that make the site unsafe to use, the sharp increase of spam bots, the paid blue checkmark epidemic, and more. There are also recent changes to the Terms of Service that subject every user to Twitter’s Grok AI **** scrapping their posts – including art and writing.
This perfect storm of massive deficits has resulted in a staggering exodus to Bluesky, a site founded by one of the former Twitter creators, Jack Dorsey. According to the official Bluesky account, there are currently 19 million users, and that number seems to grow each day.
However, a major program ******** for those seeking to and have already relocated to the shiny new site: how do you recover all those followers you’ve built up for months and years?
(Image credit: Photo illustration by Jonathan Raa/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
What is Sky Follower Bridge?
Sky Follower Bridge is a handy extension that lets you find and follow people from Twitter. It’s available for both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and you simply add the extension, log in to your Bluesky account through it, and then run it. At the same time, a tab is opened to either your following or follower count. It searches for matches through the handle, username, and any names in the bio.
According to the extension page, it can’t search for all Twitter followers at once “due to Twitter’s limitations.” Instead, you can use the Find More button at the bottom of the current results. This can be a bit time-consuming and not perfectly accurate, but it’s far easier than trying to find each person individually.
How Sky Follower Bridge changed me
When it came to Bluesky, I was as early adopter as possible with the invite system that had been in place at the time (now you can simply register like normal). I loved the interface being so similar to Twitter and the lack of drama and discourse thanks to its newness, but I found myself back on Twitter not long after due to the lack of activity on Bluesky.
Sign up to be the first to know about unmissable ****** Friday deals on top tech, plus get all your favorite TechRadar content.
This latest and largest exodus finally motivated me to return to the newer site, yet I faced the arduous task of transferring over my following count. When I tell you it took hours to find and follow maybe 30-50 people, this process alone made me nearly quit in frustration. But ***** scrolling on Twitter actually saved me for once, as I found the Sky Follower Bridge extension through it.
Once I installed it, it took me less than an hour to find and follow every user on my following tab, with only one false positive that I immediately corrected. Soon, nearly everyone I followed returned the favor. Once I returned to my feed, that was where the magic happened. And by magic, I mean having a feed reminiscent of old-school Twitter filled with posts from my followers without all the alt-right posts, blue checkmark accounts, and endless spam.
Final thoughts
It’s rare that an extension extends beyond the practical and is capable of giving me such immense joy. But thanks to Sky Follower Bridge, I’ve finally transformed my Bluesky feed into something magical and addictive. It’s to the point where I’ve rarely checked my Twitter, and when I do, the atrocious state of it makes me physically recoil.
Bluesky certainly isn’t perfect, as it’s a new site that’s still ironing out the kinks — and quite a bit of kinks are still present. But now that I have a sizable chunk of the people I follow on Twitter on Bluesky, it feels far more like home than even a month ago. Thanks, Sky Follower Bridge.

Embattled server maker Super Micro Computer said on Monday that it had hired BDO as its new auditor and submitted a plan to Nasdaq detailing its efforts to regain compliance with the exchange. The shares jumped 16% in extended trading.
“This is an important next step to bring our financial statements current, an effort we are pursuing with both diligence and urgency,” Super Micro CEO Charles Liang said in a statement.
Super Micro is late in filing its 2024 year-end report with the SEC, and said earlier this month that it was looking for a new accountant after its previous auditor, Ernst & Young, stepped down in October. Ernst & Young was new to the job, having just replaced Deloitte & Touche as Super Micro’s accounting firm in March 2023.
Super Micro said that it told Nasdaq that it believes it will be able to file its annual report for the year ended June 30, and quarterly report for the ******* ended Sept. 30. The company said it will remain listed on the Nasdaq pending the exchange’s “review of the compliance plan.”
Shares of Super Micro soared more than 14-fold from the end of 2022 to their peak in March of this year. But the stock has been hammered on troubling news about its compliance with Nasdaq. Once valued at about $70 billion, the company’s market cap was at $12.6 billion on Monday, following a 16% rally during regular trading.
Super Micro has been one of the primary beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence *****, due to its relationship with Nvidia. Sales last fiscal year more than doubled to $15 billion.
On Monday, Super Micro announced that it was selling products featuring Nvidia’s next-generation AI chip called Blackwell.

Once the event is underway, players will be able to encounter shiny Rayquaza in five-star Tera Raids across the Paldea region. This particular Rayquaza will be a dragon Tera type, making it vulnerable to ice, ******, and other dragon Pokemon.
Like other special raid bosses, shiny Rayquaza can only be caught once per save file. However, you can continue to participate in the Rayquaza raids and earn additional rewards even after catching one.
The shiny Rayquaza event is scheduled to end on January 5 at 3:59 PM PT / 6:59 PM ET. Even if you miss your chance to get one during the event, The Pokemon Company notes that the legendary Pokemon “may be featured in future events or become encounterable through other methods.”
Rayquaza isn’t the only shiny Pokemon that players will have a chance to catch during this event. Other dark-******** shiny Pokemon such as Cetoddle, Carbink, and Fraxure will also be appearing more frequently in mass outbreaks across Paldea, Kitakami, and Blueberry Academy, respectively.

De-icer teams and empty trains to help tackle any snow disruption across North West
De-icer teams and empty trains to help tackle any snow disruption across North West
Specialist de-icer teams and empty trains will help tackle any possible snow disruption across the north-west of England, rail operators have said.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice forecast for the region has meant cold weather plans for Merseyrail and Network Rail have been activated.
Merseyrail will run empty trains on their lines on Tuesday so rail conditions can be checked before services begin.
Staff at Network Rail will also be equipped with specialist kits to defrost frozen points and signals to keep the railway running safely.
Temperatures are expected to fall to ****** 3C overnight with challenging conditions expected for the rest of the week, including snow, ice and freezing rain.
Network Rail said this could impact rail travel on some rural routes in the Peak District, across the Pennines between Manchester, Leeds and in Cumbria.
Chris Pye, Network Rail’s North West route infrastructure director, said: “Snow and ice always pose a challenge at this time of the year, not only to the track, it can also obscure signals and causes branches to fall from trees on to the line.
“We work hard to ensure that points, which we use to direct trains on the track, don’t become compacted with snow and ice. We have teams who can monitor these remotely and further teams on standby ready to respond to heavy snow, should it be needed.”
Across the Merseyrail network the first service of the day on each line will run without customers to enable conditions to be checked.
If predicted ice and snow arrives, Merseyrail and Network Rail said they would work together to run as many first trains as possible.
Customers are being urged to check the Merseyrail and National Rail website, and social media before they travel.
Transport for Greater Manchester said they would be gritting bus stations and interchanges, and running trams overnight to keep overhead lines clear of frost.
Platforms and crossings were also being treated with grit and anti-icing measures to keep them safe for use.
