  2. Residents of Pakistani Kashmir say they fled into hills during Indian strikes Residents of Pakistani Kashmir say they fled into hills during Indian strikes By Tariq Maqbool MUZAFFARABAD (Reuters) – Residents of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said they fled their homes and ran into surrounding hills as India launched airstrikes early on Wednesday in a part of the city. Mosque loudspeakers told people to seek shelter as the ground shook repeatedly and the sounds of explosions reverberated, they said. “We came outside,” said Muhammad Shair Mir, 46, describing the events of the night. “Then another blast happened. The whole house moved. Everyone got scared, we all evacuated, took our kids and went up (the hill).” Many people gathered after sunrise near a mosque that had been hit in the strikes, its roof smashed and minaret toppled. Security forces had cordoned off the area. The district commissioner, a senior local official, said three people were killed near the collapsed mosque. In total, Pakistan’s military said 26 people were killed and 46 wounded in Indian attacks across Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir. India launched the strikes early on Wednesday, saying it was targeting “terrorist camps” that served as recruitment centres, launchpads, and indoctrination centres, and housed weapons and training facilities. Pakistan called it a “blatant act of war” as tensions spiralled between the nuclear-armed rivals after a deadly attack by Islamist gunmen on tourists in Indian Kashmir. It said none of the targeted areas were militant camps. District officials said that at the Line of Control that divides Pakistani and Indian Kashmir, mortar and light arms fire between the two armies continued into the morning and had killed at least six civilians on the Pakistani side. Police in Indian Kashmir said at least 10 people were killed and nearly 50 injured there. In Muzaffarbad, hospitals were operational and some small businesses opened in the morning but schools were closed and examinations cancelled, according to local authorities. Shair Mir said he and his family spent four hours in the open. Some of his neighbours had gone to hospital with injuries and the rest were shaken, he said. “This is wrong … poor innocent people, our poor mothers are sick, our sisters are sick .. our houses were rattled, our walls have cracked,” he said. 5. Mum faces new charges over alleged fake ******* scam Mum faces new charges over alleged fake ******* scam A mother accused of faking her six-year-old son’s ******* diagnosis to raise money is now facing dozens more charges, while her husband has had his charges dropped. Both parents appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Prosecutors elected not to proceed with an aggravated count of committing an act likely to cause harm and also withdrew a charge of deception against each of them. The father walked free from court but the mother is now charged with one count of criminal neglect, 57 counts of deception and 14 counts of dishonestly dealing with property. In December, Acting Assistant Police Commissioner John DeCandia said it would be alleged she shaved her six-year-old child’s head and eyebrows, and placed him in a wheelchair with bandages, to imitate stereotactic radiotherapy treatment. “Our investigation has confirmed the child is not seeking medical treatment. We believe this farce illness is causing significant and serious psychological harm to the child and their sibling,” he alleged. Prosecutors allege the mother accepted donations on 71 occasions between November 21 and December 12, 2024. Court documents allege she received donations ranging from $10 to $3000, and totalling $21,962. The criminal neglect charge states that she had a duty of care to her son, who allegedly “suffered harm as a result of” her actions. “(The mother) was, or ought to have been, aware that there was an appreciable risk that harm would be caused to (her son) by the act,” prosecutors allege. “She failed to take steps that she could reasonably be expected to have taken in the circumstances to protect (him) from harm. “Her failure to do so was, in the circumstances, so serious that a criminal penalty is warranted.” The woman, from suburban Adelaide, was remanded in custody to face court again on August 12. 8. Amazon makes ‘fundamental leap forward in robotics’ with device having sense of touch | Robots Amazon makes ‘fundamental leap forward in robotics’ with device having sense of touch | Robots Amazon said it has made a “fundamental leap forward in robotics” after developing a robot with a sense of touch that will be capable of grabbing about three-quarters of the items in its vast warehouses. Vulcan – which launches at the US firm’s “Delivering the Future” event in Dortmund, Germany, on Wednesday and is to be deployed around the world in the next few years – is designed to help humans sort items for storage and then prepare them for delivery as the latest in a suite of robots which have an ever-growing role in the online retailer’s extensive operation. Aaron Parness, Amazon’s director of robotics, described Vulcan as a “fundamental leap forward in robotics. It’s not just seeing the world, it’s feeling it, enabling capabilities that were impossible for Amazon robots until now.” The robots will be able to identify objects by touch using AI to work out what they can and can’t handle and figuring out how best to pick them up. They will work alongside humans who now stash and retrieve items from shelving units which are manoeuvred to them at picking stations by wheeled robots – of which Amazon now has more than 750,000 in operation. Vulcan will be able to stow items on the upper and lower levels of the shelving units – known as pods – so that humans no longer need to use ladders or bend so often during their work. Robots now operating in Amazon’s warehouse are able to shift items around or pick items using suction cups and computer vision. The development is likely to raise fears of job losses as retailers reduce human involvement in distribution centres, which employ thousands of people. Many retailers have said that they are increasing investment in automation as labour costs rise around the world. Amazon has faced industrial action in the *** and elsewhere over low pay in its warehouses. Economists at Goldman Sachs speculated in 2023 that 300m jobs worldwide could be automated out of existence by 2030 as a result of the development of generative AI, with many more roles radically transformed. In the ***, between 60,000 and 275,000 jobs could be displaced every year over a couple of decades at the peak of the disruption, estimates from the Tony Blair Institute suggested last year. However, Tye Brady, the chief technologist of robotics at Amazon, said robots could not completely replace humans in the group’s warehouses and were there to “amplify the human potential” and to improve safety in the workplace. The self-confessed “Star Wars geek” said the robots he helps design could be likened to R2D2 as “an amazing collaborative robot”. “People will always be part of the equation,” he said, while machines will take on “the menial, the mundane and the repetitive” tasks. “There’s no such thing as completely automated. It just doesn’t exist, because you always need people to understand the value of the operation, just using common sense, like, is that really doing the job?” He said having people involved could help protect against potential hacks of the system – as retailers increase efforts to protect themselves after the shutdown of Marks & Spencer’s online orders following a cyber-attack. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. He added that humans are also best for spotting more prosaic problems, such as broken or spilt items in a delivery that could cause problems for the system. Brady says that AI is helping to develop robots that can navigate complex spaces autonomously and learn to move safely alongside people and other objects. He said the latest generation of robots were able to “ask for help” so that they could learn new ways of doing things. “It’s really exciting to bring both the mind and the body together,” he said. “It’s finally here, and it’s just beginning.” For example, Amazon plans to install technology, which uses machine-learning and automation to create bespoke packaging that will cut waste. More than 70 of the machines will be installed in Germany, ***, France, Italy and Spain by the end of this year, with dozens more to follow by 2027. The announcement comes as Amazon this week launched its low-cost Amazon Haul site in the ***, which promises thousands of products for £20 or less, as the group takes on cut-price operators Shein and Temu. 9. Hot Chili strengthens team to push Chile projects into development Hot Chili strengthens team to push Chile projects into development Hot Chili has secured the services of two seasoned mining executives to bolster leadership as the company progresses its Costa Fuego copper-gold project and Huasco Water venture in Chile’s Atacama region. Ex-Gold Fields Australia executive Stuart Mathews joins as non-executive chairman, while Chilean copper expert Alberto Cerda assumes the role of project director. Cerda brings a particular set of skills… namely in mine development and operations to support the company’s upcoming definitive feasibility studies for both projects. The appointments align with Hot Chili’s strategic focus on advancing its low-altitude, copper and water projects amid a looming copper market, which has international majors clamouring for quality. Hot Chili says Mathews’ and Cerda’s proven expertise in delivering large-scale mining operations – particularly in Chile in Cerda’s case – positions the company to navigate the complexities of project development, resource optimisation and strategic partnerships in the world’s top copper producing country. Costa Fuego is a large copper-gold porphyry set to churn out 116,000 tonnes per annum of copper-equivalent metal, which includes 95,000t of copper and 48,000 ounces of gold in its first 14 years. Importantly for Hot Chili’s metals mix, chairman Mathews comes from a gold mining background as the recent executive vice president for Gold Fields in Australasia, where he oversaw operations producing more than 1 million ounces of gold annually. Cerda takes care of the copper background as a Chilean mining engineer with more than 40 years of experience in major copper projects in Chile for companies such as Newmont, Barrick and BHP Billiton. Hot Chili’s projects are strategically positioned to benefit from rising copper demand and regional infrastructure needs. Costa Fuego’s robust economics and Huasco Water’s exclusive water supply permit make it strategically significant to the region. With environmental permitting and exploration ongoing, the company is well-placed to deliver and further extend its overall resource numbers, thanks to a recent discovery of copper-gold porphyry mineralisation at its non-contiguous but nearby La Verde project. Located 60 kilometres from Las Losas port on Chile’s coastal range, Costa Fuego is Hot Chili’s flagship project. A recent prefeasibility study outlined a 20-year mine life with a maiden ore reserve of 502Mt grading 0.37 per cent copper, 0.10 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, 0.49g/t silver, and 97 parts per million (ppm) molybdenum, with a contained 1.86Mt copper, 1.58M ounces gold, 7.95M ounces silver and 49,000t molybdenum. The project is expected to generate a post-tax net present value (NPV) of US$1.2 billion at a US$4.30 a pound copper price and US$2280 per ounce gold price. At current market prices, the NPV increases to US$2.2B, with a 19 per cent internal rate of return and a five-year payback on US$1.27B capital expenditure. Hot Chili’s 80 per cent-owned Huasco Water project, in partnership with Compañia Minera del Pacifico, addresses critical water scarcity in the Huasco Valley. Secured after a decade-long regulatory process, Huasco Water holds the region’s only maritime licence for seawater supply, providing the project with a significant competitive advantage. Its recent pre-feasibility study detailed a two-stage development plan to supply water to local major copper producers, to earn an estimated revenue of US$9.35B and a US$977M NPV over 22 years of supply. The company has completed its baseline environmental studies and a second maritime concession application is under review, positioning Huasco Water, like Costa Fuego copper, to commence supply by the end of the decade. With copper prices soaring and gold continuing at all-time highs, the appointments come at pivotal time in the company’s development. Hot Chili says it remains on a tidy $7.5M cash pile to rapidly expand its resources, while simultaneously courting strategic partners for production at its huge copper and water undertakings. The hedge fund legend who predicted ****** Monday sounds a new market warning, saying stocks will ‘go down to new lows’ The hedge fund legend who predicted ****** Monday sounds a new market warning, saying stocks will ‘go down to new lows’ Paul Tudor Jones says the market is about to hit new lows. Jones, who predicted and profited from the 1987 stock market ******, says tariffs, particularly against China, will cause the market to fall. Even if ******** tariffs are cut to 50%, he says, markets are still set to tumble. Paul Tudor Jones, the hedge fund legend who predicted the ****** Monday stock market ******, has another dark prediction for Wall Street. Stocks, he said Tuesday morning, will likely “go down to new lows” because of Donald Trump’s tariffs—and that’s likely to happen even if the tariffs on China are cut to 50% from their current rate of 145%. “For me, it’s pretty clear. You have Trump who’s locked in on tariffs. You have the Fed who’s locked in on not cutting rates. That’s not good for the stock market,” Jones said on CNBC. Jones said he expects Trump to roll back tariffs on China, but even if that happens, he expects the impact on economic growth to be substantial. “He’ll dial it back to 50% or 40%, whatever,” Jones said. “Even when he does that…it’d be the largest tax increases since the ’60s. So you can kind of take 2%, 3% off growth.” There is one possible step that could prevent the new lows, Jones said, but he doesn’t expect that to happen: sharp rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. While he said he believes the Fed will ultimately cut rates, it will likely come after the market has hit or is near the bottom. “When we’re new lows, the hard day will start to follow, and it’ll probably create the Fed to move, create Trump to move. And then we’ll get some kind of reality,” Jones said. Strategists at the Bank of America shed light on where some of the capital flowing out of the U.S. may be heading. According to their data analysis, U.S. equities saw an $8.9 billion outflow in the week to April 30. For every $100 inflow to American stocks since the 2024 presidential election, there had been a $5 outflow over the past three weeks, the investment bank’s strategists said in a note to clients on May 1. At the same time, European equities saw a $3.4 billion inflow, according to the Wall Street bank. Meanwhile, Japanese equities saw a $4.4 billion inflow in the week to April 30 — its biggest week of inflows since April 2024. In a sign that investors were in a risk-taking mood, BofA said that cryptocurrencies and high yield bonds saw inflows of $2.3 billion and $3.9 billion in the past week, respectively. Gold and U.S. Treasury bonds collectively had $6 billion in outflows. Bank of America also revealed that its private clients, who collectively have $3.7 trillion in assets, began to worry more about deflation in the United States, relative to inflationary risks over the past four weeks. The bank said its investor clients were buying shares of utilities and low-volatility high-dividend ETFs, typically considered “deflationary defensive” assets, and were selling “inflation hedges” such as debt instruments, inflation-protected Treasury bonds, and financial sector ETFs. 13. West Midlands housing estates plagued with constant problems West Midlands housing estates plagued with constant problems Chris Steers BBC Midlands Today BBC Some residents at Haden Cross have been unable to reach their homes by car since a landslip before Christmas When Reece Aleksander moved into a new-build housing estate in the West Midlands five years ago he thought he had bought his dream home. However, he said it had become a nightmare. A landslip before Christmas has blocked access to his and some other residents’ homes ever since. But Haden Cross Drive in Cradley Heath also features street lights that have never worked and sewers that still have not been taken on by the water company. Developer Dunedin Homes said the landslip was not a “simple, quick or easy fix”, but that it was working on a temporary measure. It added that much of the work on street lights had been completed and that sewers would be adopted “in due course”. Sandwell Council said it had issued a notice requiring the privately owned road to be opened up by the end of September, adding that it hoped enforcement action would not be necessary. Reece Aleksander said he was concerned the landslip could reach his front door The landslip at Christmas saw soil and clay spill across the road and on to Mr Aleksander’s drive. However, residents said subsidence in Haden Cross Drive first became evident in January 2024 when a tree fell in nearby woods. The land has shifted several times since then, with one small night-time slip caught on a camera set up by Mr Aleksander. “It definitely woke me up, shocked isn’t even the word,” he said. “They haven’t given us a timeline, they haven’t given us any reassurance that it’s going to be fixed. “All we’ve had is a letter through the door saying there will be a temporary fix.” In a letter sent to residents on 16 April, seen by the BBC, the firm said engineers had devised a temporary solution that would allow the road to be cleared of debris, but it was currently “unable to provide definitive timescales”. The camera captured the moment a small landslip happened in the middle of the night Sewers at Haden Cross have yet to be adopted by Severn Trent Water, at which point their responsibility passes to the water supplier, and the developer footed a bill when they became blocked soon after homes were sold. Fellow resident Irene Taylor bought her home at Haden Cross at the same time as Mr Aleksander, and said she had yet to receive a water bill since moving in. She added that there had been long-term problems with sewers in the area. Dunedin, however, said it was “not aware of any current issues with the sewers” and that a report commissioned as part of the adoption process showed it was “operating as expected”. Irene Taylor said she had not received a water bill in the five years she had lived at Haden Cross But Haden Cross is not the only estate built by Redditch-based firm Dunedin to have problems with sewers and street lights. At St Dominic’s Place, in the Hartshill area of Stoke-on-Trent, residents have come up with their own novel solution to the lack of lighting over the past six years. They have attached solar-charged, battery-powered lights, similar to those found in gardens, to the metal poles in a bid to make the area safer at night. E.On, which is responsible for connecting up the street lights, said it only received an enquiry from Dunedin for that work on 28 February and final paperwork was submitted on 10 April. National Grid said it was not its responsibility to connect up those street lights, but noted that they had not been part of the original application by Dunedin in 2018. Residents Sewage covered the bank behind homes, Mr Canavan said Dan Canavan and his family moved into their new build on the street in 2019. “We had a big problem last year with a collapsed drain on a street up from us and it was causing backfill issues on our estate,” he said. “Severn Trent wouldn’t accept that we were on their system – we had to all pay together I think £700 to have 13,000 gallons removed from the system. “We had raw sewage running down the fields behind us as a result of it.” Stoke-on-Trent City Council successfully took Dunedin Homes to court last year and the firm was forced to pay £4,000 in fines, costs and a surcharge, the maximum available at the time, for a breach of planning permission. Severn Trent said it had inspected the sewers on 14 March and found that all “remedial works” had been completed as requested and that it would adopt them when “one outstanding point” was addressed by the developers. Dan Canavan said residents had to club together and pay for the sewerage system to be pumped out as it had not been adopted A third council in the West Midlands has also taken action against Dunedin Homes. Walsall Council issued an enforcement notice after a Labour club knocked down as part of a development at Unity Drive in Pelsall was not rebuilt in the timeframe outlined in the planning conditions. Demolished in 2015, it was meant to have been replaced within 10 months. It is now completed. A final inspection was carried out in December 2024, and it is due to be signed off by the local authority, the developer said. However, in the past 10 years the club has closed, according to the Financial Conduct Authority, and one resident told the BBC that the site had become a magnet for anti-social behaviour and vandals. Dunedin has disputed that, saying that it employed a maintenance firm to collect litter, cut grass and keep an eye on the site every two weeks. Steve Lowbridge said Pelsall Labour club had been misled Steve Lowbridge was a member of the club when the developer was looking to build 24 homes at Unity Drive. “The directors of Dunedin Homes did a presentation back in 2014. The club had been struggling for some time and they said they would knock down the old club and build a more suitable premises – what processed was exactly the opposite,” he said. “The club was misled from day one, the council blamed the developer, the developer blamed the council. “My personal opinion the main culprit in all this is Dunedin Homes.” Dunedin said the club was on the verge of bankruptcy and the building was in a poor state of repair before it was demolished. It said it had settled many of its debts and legal costs, “which literally saved the club”. Janine Jeffery, who is listed as the club secretary, told the BBC that the project to bring the new building into use was in its “final development stages, with significant progress being made”. This view, captured by a drone, shows the extent of the landslip at Haden Cross, blocking the road In a lengthy response, Dunedin said regarding the landslip at Cradley Heath there were “a number of extremely complex geotechnical factors to take account of”. “We have sought to update the residents at each key juncture of our remedial plans,” it said. “We are continuing to liaise with our solicitors and engineers to identify and implement a permanent remedial solution at the soonest opportunity.” It said the street lights there and at Hartshill were “fully ducted” and “awaiting energising”. At Hartshill, it said it was liaising with E.On about connecting those up. In Cradley Heath, Dunedin said the process of connecting street lights had been affected by one of them being “directly in front of the retaining wall that has failed” during the landslip. However, the firm failed to address the key issue raised by residents at both estates about the length of time in connecting those up, after many moved in five years ago. An illustration of atoms floating freely in the air. | Credit: Stanislaw Pytel via Getty Images For the first time, scientists have observed solo atoms floating freely and interacting in space. The discovery helps to confirm some of the most basic principles of quantum mechanics that were first predicted more than a century ago but were never directly verified. Individual atoms are notoriously difficult to observe due to their quantum nature. Researchers cannot, for example, know both an atom’s position and its velocity at the same time, due to quantum weirdness. But using certain laser techniques, they have captured images of clouds of atoms. “It’s like seeing a cloud in the sky, but not the individual water molecules that make up the cloud,” Martin Zwierlein, a physicist at MIT and co-author of the new research, said in a statement. The new method goes one step further, allowing scientists to capture images of “free-range” atoms in free space. First, Zwierlein and his colleagues corralled a cloud of sodium atoms in a loose trap at ultracold temperatures. Then, they shot a lattice of laser light through the cloud to temporarily freeze the atoms in place. A second, fluorescent laser then illuminated the individual atoms’ positions. Related: There may be a ‘dark mirror’ universe within ours where atoms failed to form, new study suggests The observed atoms belong to a group called bosons. These particles share the same quantum mechanical state and, as a result, behave like a wave, bunching together. This concept was first proposed by French physicist Louis de Broglie in 1924 and has subsequently become known as a “de Broglie wave.” Top: Two illustrations show how atoms in an atom trap (red) are suddenly frozen in place via an optical lattice. Bottom: Three microscope images show (left to right) bosonic 23Na forming a Bose-Einstein condensate; a single spin state in a weakly interacting 6Li Fermi mixture; and both spin states of a strongly interacting Fermi mixture, directly revealing pair formation. | Credit: Yao et al. Sure enough, the bosons Zwierlein and his team observed displayed de Broglie wave behavior. The researchers also captured images of lithium fermions — a type of particle that repels similar particles rather than bunching together. Two other groups reported using a similar technique to observe pairs of bosons and fermions in the same issue of the journal. “We are able to see single atoms in these interesting clouds of atoms and what they are doing in relation to each other, which is beautiful,” Zwierlein said. In the future, the team plans to use the new technique — called “atom-resolved microscopy” — to investigate other quantum mechanical phenomena. For example, they may use it to try observing the “quantum Hall effect,” in which electrons sync up under the influence of a strong magnetic field. Meet Amazon’s robot, Vulcan, the first with a sense of touch Meet Amazon’s robot, Vulcan, the first with a sense of touch There’s a new warehouse robot at Amazon that has a sense of touch, allowing it to handle a job previously only done by humans. Amazon unveiled the robot, called Vulcan, Wednesday at an event in Germany. CNBC got an exclusive first look at Vulcan in April, as it stowed items into tall, yellow bins at a warehouse in Spokane, Washington. An up-close look at the “hand” of the robot reveals how it can feel the items it touches using an AI-powered sensor to determine the precise pressure and torque each object needs. This innovative gripper helps give Vulcan the ability to manipulate 75% of the 1 million unique items in inventory at the Spokane warehouse. Amazon has used other robotic arms inside its warehouses since 2021, but those rely on cameras for detection and suction for grasp, limiting what types of objects they can handle. Vulcan can also operate 20 hours a day, according to Aaron Parness, who heads up the Amazon Robotics team that developed the machine. Aaron Parness, Director of Amazon Robotics, shows CNBC’s Katie Tarasov the gripper of its newest robot, Vulcan, at an Amazon warehouse in Spokane, Washington, on April 17, 2025. Joseph Huerta Still, Parness told CNBC that instead of replacing people in its warehouses, Vulcan will create new, higher skilled jobs that involve maintaining, operating, installing and building the robots. When asked if Amazon will fully automate warehouses in the future, Parness said, “not at all.” “I don’t believe in 100% automation,” he said. “If we had to get Vulcan to do 100% of the stows and picks, it would never happen. You would wait your entire life. Amazon understands this.” The goal is for Vulcan to handle 100% of the stowing that happens in the top rows of bins, which are difficult for people to reach, Parness said. Limiting workers to stowing on mid-height shelves, the so-called power zone, could lower the chance for worker injuries. Amazon has long struggled with injury rates far higher than those at other warehouses, though the company claims those rates have improved significantly. “We have a ladder that we have to step onto several dozen times a day during your ten hour shift. There is a lot of reaching. We have to lunge and squat. So it’s a lot of tough body mechanics,” said Kari Freitas Hardy, an Amazon worker in Spokane. “As a picker, if I had an innovation like this where I could have stayed within my power zone, my days would have been just so much easier.” Amazon said Vulcan is operating at about the same speed as a human worker and can handle items up to 8 pounds. It operates behind a fence, sequestered from human workers to reduce the risk of accidents. Experts agree that humans will work alongside robots in warehouses like Amazon’s for the foreseeable future. “Whereas if you build a terribly complicated automated system and it breaks, then everything stops,” said Bill Ray, a researcher at Gartner. “Taking out the last human is so expensive. It’s so disruptive. It would be a huge investment and an enormous risk.” Freitas Hardy recently transitioned from picking items to working with the robots. She’s one of the 350,000 workers Amazon said it’s spent $1.2 billion to upskill since 2019. “It would be many decades off, to have them just come in and take over, so at this point it’s more exciting if you ask me, to see the growth potential because that is where it does increase jobs on the back side,” Freitas Hardy said. Although Freitas Hardy said she isn’t making more money in her new role, Amazon said others who participate in its Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship program typically receive pay increases of about 40%. Amazon said the team that developed Vulcan has grown from a handful of people to more than 250 employees in the three years since the project began. Amazon wouldn’t disclose how much it cost to develop Vulcan, but Parness said it represents a big business opportunity. “Vulcan can interact with the world in a more human-like manner, and that gives us a lot more process paths that we can use automation to bring down the cost that our customer pays, and the speed with which we can deliver those products to our customers,” Parness said. Another big return on investment may come from robots making fewer mistakes than humans. “Product returns are incredibly high and product returns are incredibly expensive,” Gartner’s Ray said. “Some of them will be because the wrong thing was put in the box. And if you can reduce that, that’s a real cost saving straight away.” Meanwhile, Amazon’s humanoid robot Digit has yet to bring operational efficiency. Amazon announced in 2023 that it was testing the Agility Robotics bipedal robot to help organize and move totes, but it’s yet to deploy Digit at scale. When asked if Vulcan indicates that robots have moved from gimmick to real world application, Parness said, “It doesn’t matter if the robot has legs or wheels or it’s bolted to the floor. I think the thing that makes the robot useful is having that sense of touch so that it can interact in high contact and high clutter environments. That’s the tipping point for me, and I think we’re right there.” For now, Vulcan is only in full operation at the Spokane warehouse. Another version of Vulcan that can pick specific items from inventory is being tested in Hamburg, Germany. Amazon said it plans to add Vulcan in more U.S. and ******* facilities in 2026. Oulton Park: ‘Nothing anyone could do’ to prevent fatal ****** in which Shane Richardson and Owen Jenner died Oulton Park: ‘Nothing anyone could do’ to prevent fatal ****** in which Shane Richardson and Owen Jenner died Fatalities are rare in motorbike racing, but unfortunately not unheard of. British Superbikes rider Chrissy Rouse died after a ****** at Donington Park in 2022. Superbikes can reach speeds of up to 200mph, and the bikes used in Supersport regularly clock well in excess of 100mph. Former rider and MLav Racing owner Michael Laverty told BBC Sport that the riders were probably reaching speeds of “about 90 to 100mph” when they crashed on the opening corner of Oulton Park on the first lap. McLaren-Wood, who races for Josh Davis Motorsport By UGGLY & Co Kawasaki, expects the incident to impact some of the riders, but insisted they all enter the sport knowing the risks. “I think it will affect a few people,” McLaren-Wood said. “Most of us out there know it’s the sport we love to do and we will go out there fighting again, and avoid anything like that happening again.” Motorsport Vision Racing (MSV), who are responsible for circuit operations at Oulton Park, and the Motorcycle Racing Control Board (MCRCB) said on Monday they are “investigating the full circumstances of the incident in conjunction with the Coroner and Cheshire Constabulary”. “I think there are always ways to improve in safety in elite sport,” McLaren-Wood said when asked what the sport could learn. “Maybe there were too many riders out there, I don’t really know. I’m not a safety expert, but I think it was mostly a tragedy.” The Oulton Park event marked the beginning of the 2025 British Superbikes season, with a further seven rounds set to take place across the *** before three ‘showdown’ events. The Supersport Championship is a support class to the main British Superbike series. The next event of the British Supersport Championship season takes place at Donington Park on 16-18 May. 23. The Curious Case Of The Steam Version Of Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos The Curious Case Of The Steam Version Of Neptunia Riders VS Dogoos Travis Bruno of Capsule Computers writes: “When it comes to the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise, you never quite know what Idea Factory and Compile Heart might have up their sleeve next. One year fans of the franchise might see their favorite Goddesses fighting in an action game or taking part in a pseudo turn-based RPG, and the next they might find them in a rhythm idol game or even a strategy RPG. One thing is sure though, almost every year sees the release of a new game featuring Neptune and her friends in some form. Some of these cards that Idea Factory has played have been Aces that, despite not being main entry games, match that level of storytelling quality while others have been Jokers that land flat. 24. Latest Neo4j release aims to simplify graph technology Latest Neo4j release aims to simplify graph technology Neo4j on Wednesday launched Aura Graph Analytics, a new serverless platform that uses graph technology to uncover patterns and relationships among data points and can connect to any data source. Now generally available on a pay-as-you-go basis, Aura Graph Analytics is designed to work on any cloud with all databases, data warehouses, data lakes and data lakehouses without forcing users to move data into Neo4j’s graph database platform. In addition, the graph database specialist’s offering aims to make graph analytics easier to use by removing the need for custom queries — specialized algorithms designed to discover specific patterns or relationships — and instead comes with 65 prebuilt algorithms that reduce the need for graph expertise. Graph technology is an approach to storing and analyzing interconnected data. With graph technology, which simultaneously connects multiple related data points to one another rather than just one at a time, users can discover complex patterns and networks that might not otherwise be found. As a result, graph technology is valuable for applications such as fraud detection, recommendation engines and generative AI (GenAI) development, and applications that rely on networks and patterns, according to William McKnight, president of McKnight Consulting Group. The launch marks a significant milestone similar to what leaders are doing in other realms — making powerful analytics more accessible, enabling users to apply advanced algorithms to diverse data sets, drive better insights and enhance efficiency while integrating with AI and machine learning workflows. William McKnightPresident, McKnight Consulting Group “Graph is immensely important for applications that involve relationships, networks, patterns and even establishing the relative importance of elements of the business,” he said. “Graph analytics enhances AI decision-making by revealing complex connections and patterns, providing deeper insights with added context.” Because Neo4j’s Aura Graph Analytics aims to make graph technology more widely used, it is a valuable offering, McKnight continued. “The launch marks a significant milestone similar to what leaders are doing in other realms — making powerful analytics more accessible, enabling users to apply advanced algorithms to diverse data sets, drive better insights and enhance efficiency while integrating with AI and machine learning workflows,” he said. New capabilities Until recently, graph technology was for specialized applications that rely on relationships between data. In addition, it was complex, requiring users to learn graph-specific query languages such as Cypher and GraphQL. Its use was therefore limited, and it remained a niche within data management and analytics. GenAI development is changing that. For GenAI applications to understand an enterprise’s operations, they need to be trained using a combination of that enterprise’s relevant proprietary data and GenAI model technology. In addition, the relevant data has to be high-quality and voluminous for applications to be accurate and reduce the occurrences of AI hallucinations. One way many enterprises are searching for and discovering enough relevant high-quality data is by vectorizing data, which is the process of assigning numerical values to data to make similar data discoverable. Another is graph technology, which uses neural networks to discover relationships between data points. As a result, graph technology is taking on greater importance, according to McKnight. “Graph technology can … transform data into machine learning-ready features, boosting model accuracy and doubling insight efficacy through real-time adaptability and advanced algorithms,” he said. Amid its growing importance, Neo4j is attempting to make graph-based analysis more accessible with the release of Aura Graph Analytics. In 2023, the vendor targeted performance speed to meet the needs of developers running high-volume workloads such as those required for GenAI development. Now, Neo4j is targeting more widespread use. The 65 prebuilt algorithms reduce the need to know specialized query languages, lowering the need to write code by 75%, according to Neo4j. Meanwhile, the ability to work with any data source fully eliminates the need to develop complex — and expensive — extract, transform and load (ETL) pipelines. In addition to reducing coding requirements and eliminating ETL workloads, Aura Graph Analytics benefits include the following, according to the vendor: Increased model accuracy by automatically transforming graph structures into graph embeddings that can be used to inform machine learning and GenAI models. Real-time updates that capture changes in data as they occur to further increase model accuracy. Parallel processing of graph algorithms to ensure performance at scale. A fully managed offering that removes administrative burdens and costs associated with server provisioning and maintenance. Native integration with Snowflake coming in June. Customers requesting a less complex means of using graph technology provided the motivation for developing Aura Graph Analytics, according to Sudhir Hasbe, Neo4j’s chief product officer. “The impetus came directly from customers who wanted the power of graph without the complexity,” he said. “We built it to eliminate the barriers … so anyone can tap into its unique insights and improve decision-making.” In addition, expanding Neo4j’s target market to more potential customers by enabling the vendor’s graph algorithms to work with any data source played a role, Hasbe added. Combined, Aura Graph Analytics serves to simplify graph analytics and potentially improve graph-driven outcomes, according to McKnight. “Neo4j’s Aura Graph Analytics … makes it easier for users to apply graph analytics without needing extensive expertise or infrastructure setup,” he said. “The platform will also deliver significantly better analytical results, with improved accuracy and insights that drive better business decisions.” However, despite its benefits, Aura Graph Analytics doesn’t fully eliminate the complexities of graph analytics, McKnight continued. To further simplify using its tools, Neo4j could add support for more graph query languages and integrate natively with cloud data warehouses beyond Snowflake, he said. Looking ahead With Aura Graph Analytics now generally available, Neo4j plans to continue trying to make graph technology more accessible, according to Hasbe. The vendor’s roadmap includes adding integrations with GenAI providers, adding more self-service analytics capabilities and reducing the complexity of its platform. In addition, Neo4j plans to add GenAI capabilities to its own platform to make it easier to use and more efficient, Hasbe said. McKnight, meanwhile, suggested that Neo4j could potentially attract new customers by more clearly demonstrating graph technology’s role in AI development and further addressing ease of use. “Refining its AI/ML messaging, helping customers tame the potential chaos of having many more graphs in play, improving ease of use and publishing benchmarks could help drive growth and deepen its value proposition,” he said. “These can help Neo4j reach a wider audience.” Eric Avidon is a senior news writer for Informa TechTarget and a journalist with more than 25 years of experience. Investment Adviser Two Prime Says Ethereum Has ‘Failed Beyond A Point Worth Engaging,’ Goes Bitcoin Only Investment Adviser Two Prime Says Ethereum Has ‘Failed Beyond A Point Worth Engaging,’ Goes Bitcoin Only Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Two Prime has said it would no longer be offering Ethereum to customers. According to the investment adviser, “ETH has fundamentally changed.” Two Prime is not the only institution that has lost faith in Ethereum in recent months. Ethereum is being buffeted on all sides. Amid recent market underperformance, the project has faced criticisms from its community, competitors, and even institutions. Now, even as the project looks to address growing concerns and rally behind a clear vision, it has been hit with a potential institutional adoption blow. Digital asset-focused wealth adviser Two Prime has said that it is switching to a Bitcoin-only focus and will no longer offer clients exposure to Ethereum. The firm disclosed this in a scathing statement released on Thursday. “ETH’s statistical trading behavior, value proposition, and community culture have failed beyond a point that is worth engaging,” it said. Don’t Miss: According to Two Prime, “ETH has fundamentally changed” and is now trading “like a memecoin,” making it problematic for algorithmic trading and as collateral for lending. The firm cited the asset’s price action since Q4 and data comparing its volatility to Bitcoin and Dogecoin. Ethereum is trading at around $1,850, down 55% from its Q4 high of about $4,100, while Bitcoin is down only about 12% from its highs. Two Prime said the data suggested that while investors were buying the Bitcoin dip, they were not buying Ethereum. Meanwhile, the shared volatility data suggested that over a 30-day *******, Ethereum traded more like Dogecoin than Bitcoin. “High volatility can be profitable at times, but for institutional investors and traders, higher levels of volatility equate to lower position sizing,” it said. “This makes institutional participation less attractive, suggesting declining trading volumes and market depth.” This low institutional interest is perhaps already evident in the flows to spot exchange-traded funds. “ETF buying of BTC has far outpaced that of ETH by almost 24 times. Even with a higher market cap, BTC total supply consumed by ETFs is more than double that of the ETH supply,” Two Prime said, positing that the failure of Ethereum ETFs to catch a bid could translate to less resource allocation towards their promotion and *****. Story Continues Trending: New to crypto? Get up to $400 in rewards for successfully completing short educational courses and making your first qualifying trade on Coinbase. Two Prime theorized that the cause of Ethereum’s problems was threefold. For one, the firm said the project is no longer unique in its role of powering decentralized applications and is falling behind competing chains like Solana in technological capability and performance. At the same time, Two Prime repeated the recurring argument that Layer 2 chains are cannibalizing the Ethereum ecosystem’s monetization. Lastly, the firm said Ethereum had evolved into “a bureaucratic and ideological organization rather than one focused on building a tech product.” Two Prime is not the only institution that has lost faith in Ethereum in recent months. Citing similar factors, Standard Chartered reduced its ETH price target for 2025 by a staggering 60% from $10,000 to $4,000 in March. Similarly, VanEck cut its 2030 ETH target by 67% from $22,000 to $7,300 in October. Still, Two Prime’s decision comes just as the Ethereum Foundation, the non-profit that serves as the network’s primary developer, appears to be taking steps to address concerns, unveiling a new organizational model and a renewed focus on Layer 1 improvements.
