Uber reported first-quarter results Wednesday that beat analysts’ expectations for earnings, but fell shy of anticipated revenue growth for the quarter. Shares fell about 5% following the report.
Here’s how Uber did versus analysts’ estimates compiled by LSEG:
Earnings per share: 83 cents vs. 50 cents expected.
Revenue: $11.53 billion vs. $11.62 billion expected.
Revenue at the ride-sharing company grew about 14% in the first three months of 2025, up from $10.13 billion during the same ******* in 2024.
The company also reported net income of around $1.78 billion or 83 cents per share during the first three months of 2025, up from a net loss of $654 million, or a loss of 32-cent loss per share, during the first quarter of 2024.
Uber’s largest business segments, which include its ride-hailing business and food and grocery delivery service, saw bookings increase year-over-year.
Here are the key segment numbers:
Mobility (gross bookings): $21.18 billion, up 13% year over year
Delivery (gross bookings): $20.38 billion, up 15% year over year
The company also said its “monthly active platform consumers,” had grown to 170 million, up 14% from the first quarter of last year. Users booked around 3.04 billion “trips” during the first quarter of 2025, up 18% from the first quarter of 2024.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and CFO Prashanth Mahendra-Rajah said they expect gross bookings to reach between $45.75 billion and $47.25 billion during the current quarter, with EBITDA in the range of $2.02 billion to $2.12 billion for that *******.
Khosrowshahi also said the company views autonomous vehicles, or AV technology, as “the single greatest opportunity ahead for Uber.”
Uber allows app users to book robotaxi rides in some U.S. markets, or order food for delivery via autonomous vehicle in others.
Khosrowshahi said Uber reached an “annual run-rate” of 1.5 million autonomous vehicle trips.
In March, the company began to offer users in Austin, Texas the option to hail a robotaxi from its partner, Alphabet-owned Waymo exclusively via the Uber platform.
Khosrowshahi said the Waymo Austin launch “exceeded” Uber’s expectations and around 100 Waymo vehicles operating in Austin are now “busier than over 99% of all drivers” in Austin as far as completed trips per day.
Besides its Waymo partnership, Uber has also agreed to work with Volkswagen, Avride, May Mobility, and the autonomous trucking company Aurora for autonomous ride-hailing and freight services in the U.S. Uber has additional partnerships with AV companies internationally including with WeRide, Pony.AI and Momenta.
Executives are scheduled to discuss Uber’s first-quarter results and plans during an earnings call Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. EDT.

World War II anniversary: MEPs pay homage to veterans and celebrate peace | News
World War II anniversary: MEPs pay homage to veterans and celebrate peace | News
“Eighty years after the guns fell silent across Europe, we honour the courage of those who fought, and the sacrifice of those who fell. We remember not just the end of a war, but the birth of our Union. The most powerful tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in this war lies not only in remembrance, but in resolve. In our determination to stand together and say, clearly and firmly: never again,” EP President Metsola said.
European Council President António Costa thanked the veterans for their “sacrifice and commitment to peace”, regretting that, today, “we cannot celebrate peace in peace”, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Mr Costa encouraged the EU member states and their partners to stay united in the face of the Russian aggressor, as the best way to pay homage to those who gave their lives 80 years ago defending freedom. Finally, he reminded European citizens that “peace is a heritage, but also a responsibility”.
Speeches by veterans of war
Three veterans of the war – Mr Robert Chot, a 102-year-old Belgian veteran of the Battle of the Ardennes; Mr Janusz Komorowski a Polish veteran of the liberation of Poland and now 95 years old; and Mr Janusz Maksymowicz, also Polish and now 96 years old, who participated in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising – addressed MEPs.
Belgian war veteran Robert Chot said: “80 years ago, the guns fell silent, bringing an end to a terrible battle that caused millions of deaths in Europe and elsewhere. If today we are still living in peace, it is thanks to you and the countries you represent”. Peace is always uncertain, he added. “There are always clouds hanging over us. Let us do what is necessary to ensure that peace endures in Europe”, he declared.
Mr Janusz Komorowski talked about the difficult destiny of Poles who were fighting for freedom and independence and for the right of the Polish nation to exist, in Poland, abroad and during the Warsaw uprising in 1944. “They gave their lives for the freedom of other nations too, in the hope that the brutal force of the peace wreckers would be broken forever. Today, I want to thank that wartime generation, but also the European Parliament for becoming a beacon of peace, freedom and democracy, and for steadfastly defending these values”, he concluded.
Mr Janusz Maksymowicz stressed that the fight for freedom and values had clearly not ended but had taken on new forms. “We know how ruthless ideologies that divide people and nations can be. That is why today we say with full conviction: community is strength. A community of nations that respects the European traditions and cultures of all people who want to live in peace.”
The ceremony was brought to a close with a musical performance of the European anthem by a soprano accompanied by a string ensemble.
Ahead of the plenary event, Presidents Metsola and Costa attended a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony outside of the Parliament building in Strasbourg.

What to Expect From the Conclave, the Process of Electing a New Pope
What to Expect From the Conclave, the Process of Electing a New Pope
The first papal conclave in 12 years begins on Wednesday at the ******** after a morning Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. At 4:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. Eastern), the cardinals will walk in a short procession to the Sistine Chapel from the nearby Pauline Chapel to begin the vote.
When the master of pontifical liturgical celebrations says, “extra omnes,” a Latin phrase that means, “everybody out,” everyone but 133 cardinal electors — those under the age of 80 who can vote in the secret ballot, leave the Sistine Chapel, its wooden doors closing behind them.
Once the conclave begins, cardinals are not allowed to leave the ********, other than for meals and to sleep at night, until a two-thirds majority agrees on the next pope. Phones, internet, television and any contact outside the ******** walls are prohibited, a custom enforced to discourage the process from dragging on.
The conversations that could shape the voting began after Pope Francis’ death on April 21, as cardinals met in the ******** both to plan his ******** and to discuss major issues facing the church.
Timing: Generally, a conclave must begin 15 to 20 days after a pope’s death. This one is scheduled to start 16 days after Francis died. The date was chosen in part to allow enough time for preparations, said Matteo Bruni, the ********’s spokesman.
Preparations: These have included closing the Sistine Chapel to tourists and making special arrangements, such as installing the stoves in which the cardinals’ ballots are incinerated after voting.
Secret ballots: The cardinals vote by hand, writing in the name of the man — and it must be a baptized Roman Catholic man — they want to be pope. One vote will take place on Wednesday afternoon. The following days, cardinals will vote twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon.
Smoke: Up to twice a day, at the end of the morning and the end of the afternoon, the ballots are incinerated, sending a plume of smoke into the sky above the Sistine Chapel. If a two-thirds majority has not reached a consensus, chemicals are added to turn the smoke from the burned ballots ******. When a new pope has been chosen, the smoke is colored white. Onlookers gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the ******** keep their eyes trained on the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel.
The announcement: After a new pope is chosen, a senior cardinal steps onto a balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and proclaims into a microphone, “Habemus papam,” a Latin phrase meaning, “We have a pope.” The cardinal announces the new pope, and the name he has chosen to go by as pontiff.
The pope then emerges, dressed in a white cassock, and gives his first blessing as pontiff to the crowd gathered below.
How long will it take? It is unclear how long the conclave will last. Each of the last two popes — Benedict XVI, in 2005, and Francis, in 2013 — was elected in two days. After the death of Clement IV, in 1268, the cardinals needed 33 months to find a successor.
This year, if the conclave hasn’t reached a decision by Saturday afternoon, the cardinal electors would get Sunday off for prayer and informal conversations. But they would still not be allowed to leave the ********.

Cisco lays out plans for networking in era of quantum computing
Cisco lays out plans for networking in era of quantum computing
Cisco has unveiled its plans to prepare networking for the era of quantum computing. As it officially opened its Quantum Labs in Santa Monica, the company announced that it has developed a prototype quantum network entanglement chip, in collaboration with the University of California (UC), Santa Barbara.
According to Cisco, the chip generates pairs of entangled photons that instantly transmit quantum states between each other, regardless of distance, through quantum teleportation. The phenomenon was described by Albert Einstein as “spooky action at a distance”.
Galan Moody, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC Santa Barbara, who worked with Cisco on the development of the prototype chip, said: “Integrated photonics enables many sources to be combined onto a single chip, and by packaging these sources with optical fibre and electronic controls, a single device can boost the entanglement rates for many users on their quantum network.”
The chip is a fundamental component of Cisco’s approach to building a datacentre architecture for the era of quantum computing. In a blog post discussing the challenges of quantum computing in the datacentre, Cisco’s quantum computing lead, Reza Nejabati, and head of research, Ramana Kompella, wrote: “The challenges for quantum datacentre network fabric are fundamentally different from classical ones. Quantum datacentres must preserve fragile quantum states, distribute entanglement resources, facilitate teleportation between processors and synchronise operations with sub-nanosecond precision.”
Cisco’s quantum datacentre architecture consists of three layers. The first is the physical layer of specialised quantum hardware; second, there is an entanglement management layer that distributes quantum resources; and finally, there is the computing layer that partitions algorithms across networked processors. According to Nejabati and Kompella, this architecture enables multiple smaller quantum processors to work together as a unified system, potentially accelerating practical quantum applications by years.
Beyond the entanglement chip, Vijoy Pandey, senior vice-president of Outshift by Cisco, said: “We’re building infrastructure to connect quantum processors at scale, enabling distributed quantum computing, quantum sensing and optimisation algorithms that could transform critical applications such as drug discovery, materials science and complex logistics problems. Our quantum network entanglement chip is foundational to this vision.”
What makes our quantum networking approach powerful is our focus on both software and hardware development
Vijoy Pandey, Cisco
Pandey said Cisco was advancing research prototypes of other critical components, including entanglement distribution protocols, a distributed quantum computing compiler, Quantum Network Development Kit (QNDK) and a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) using quantum vacuum noise.
“What makes our quantum networking approach powerful is our focus on both software and hardware development. By developing our own network hardware components, such as the chip alongside our full software stack, we gain unique insights into how these elements work together to build complete quantum networking infrastructure,” he said.
While some companies focus solely on one type of quantum computing technology, Cisco said its approach is quantum technology agnostic, which means it can work with any quantum computing technology. “We don’t need to pick winners because we’re building the networking fabric that will help all quantum technologies to scale,” Pandey added.
The company has promised to unveil more of its quantum datacentre infrastructure roadmap as it fleshes out its quantum networking stack. Cisco has also been implementing the Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) NIST standard across its product portfolio, which, Pandey said, will ensure classical networks remain secure in a post-quantum world.

Israel’s Gaza plan ‘dangerous moment’ for civilians: UN official
Israel’s Gaza plan ‘dangerous moment’ for civilians: UN official
The UN’s human rights chief told AFP Wednesday that Israel’s plan for an expanded offensive in the Gaza Strip represented “a very dangerous moment” for civilians there.
“What we see is only more destruction, more hatred, more dehumanisation,” said Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a visit to Copenhagen for a UN meeting.
“It’s a very dangerous moment for civilians,” he added, criticising the Israeli plan for an expanded offensive in the Gaza Strip.
On Monday, Israel announced an expanded military campaign, which an Israeli official said would entail the “conquest” of the ************ territory.
On Tuesday, Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said this meant that the Gaza Strip would be “entirely destroyed”.
Several countries and world leaders have already condemned the plan, and Turk said the parties needed to “come to a place of reason and peace, and not just of continuous fighting and war”.
The war needed to end, he said, there needed to be a ceasefire, a political solution with all the hostages “released unconditionally and immediately”.
The ************ Islamist organisation ****** has said that ceasefire talks are pointless at this stage.
The blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip “needs to be lifted immediately”, said Turk.
“Humanitarian assistance needs to come in. That’s an obligation, that’s an obligation under international law,” he added.
Turk argued that the current situation worldwide underlined the need to reaffirm the principles of international cooperation. The UN Security Council “is not functioning well” to address “the big crisis of our time”, he added.
“With what is happening at the moment, in this current geopolitical moment, it is all the more important to come back to the principles, the values, to the norms, to the institutions, because they have served humanity well for 80 years,” said Turk.
“And if we lose them, we lose a lot of what has been actually possible by way of progress, human progress, development, and also when it comes to humanitarian action and human rights,” he added.
He hoped “that the world comes together again, shows the political leadership… including the most powerful countries around the world, that they act in favour of peace and not in favour of war”.

This Top 5.5%-Yielding Dividend Stock Continues to Demonstrate Why It’s a Smart Buy
Realty Income built its business to deliver reliable and stable performance.
The REIT expects to continue growing its earnings and dividend this year despite the increased uncertainty.
It’s a smart stock to buy and hold during turbulent times.
10 stocks we like better than Realty Income ›
Market turbulence and uncertainty have been on the rise this year. Tariffs have caused volatility and concerns that we could experience a resurgence in inflation and slower economic growth. Those headwinds could have a big impact on corporate earnings in the coming quarters.
However, they shouldn’t have much effect on the performance of Realty Income (NYSE: O). The real estate investment trust’s (REIT‘s) “ability to deliver reliable and stable performance through varying market conditions continues to be a hallmark of our platform,” commented CEO Sumit Roy in its first-quarter earnings press release. The company expects 2025 to be another year of steady earnings and dividend growth. Realty Income’s ability to deliver stability in a variety of market conditions makes it a smart stock to buy right now.
Realty Income delivered another quarter of reliable earnings and dividend growth. The REIT generated $1.06 per share of adjusted funds from operations (FFO) during the *******, a 2.9% increase from the prior year. That rising cash flow enabled the company to continue hiking its dividend. It announced its 110th consecutive quarterly dividend increase in March (and 130th payment boost since it went public in 1994). It has boosted its monthly dividend by 3.4% over the past year, pushing the yield up to more than 5.5%. Meanwhile, it has maintained a very conservative dividend payout ratio for a REIT at 75.1% of its adjusted FFO in the first quarter.
Roy commented on the quarter in the earnings press release. He stated: “Our first quarter results reflect the strength of our portfolio and our ability to deploy capital into high-quality opportunities, particularly in Europe. Our size, scale, and breadth of investments, together with access to various capital sources, remain key advantages and reinforce our ability to drive consistent results.”
Realty Income invested nearly $1.4 billion during the quarter. It invested the bulk of that capital in Europe ($825 million in acquisitions and nearly $70 million in development projects). It focused on investing in Europe because those investments will earn a higher return (7% initial cash yield for acquisitions compared to 6.9% in the U.S.).
Story Continues
Meanwhile, the REIT’s existing real estate portfolio delivered steady results. Its same-store rental revenue increased by 1.3%, driven by contractual rent increases and signing renewal and new leases at higher rates as legacy leases expired (rents on released properties were 3.9% higher than the prior rate on average).
Realty Income expects to continue delivering resilient earnings and dividend growth. Roy commented: “Throughout our history, we have strategically expanded and diversified our portfolio across geographies, asset classes, and investment types. This, combined with our high-quality tenant base, ensures the predictability and durability of our cash flows, which has proven to be especially valuable during periods of uncertainty caused by exogenous (external) factors.”
The backbone of Realty Income is its high-quality real estate portfolio. The REIT owns a diversified portfolio of properties secured by long-term net leases with many of the world’s leading companies. That lease structure provides it with very stable cash flow because tenants cover all of a property’s operating costs, including routine maintenance, real estate taxes, and building insurance.
Meanwhile, Realty Income has one of the strongest financial profiles in the REIT sector. Its conservative dividend payout ratio enables it to retain significant excess free cash flow to help fund new property investments. It also has one of the strongest balance sheets in the sector. That provides it with nearly unparalleled access to low-cost capital to fund new property investments.
These factors drive the company’s confidence that it will achieve its 2025 guidance despite the increased uncertainty stemming from the unknown impact of tariffs. Realty Income expects to invest about $4 billion into new properties this year, which will help grow its adjusted FFO to a range of $4.22 to $4.28 per share. That’s about a 2% increase from last year as the REIT continues battling the headwinds of higher interest rates. It could grow even faster if interest rates fall, which would enable it to increase its acquisition volume. The REIT’s rising earnings and low payout ratio should support continued dividend growth.
Realty Income’s diversified real estate portfolio continues to produce stable and steadily rising rental income. The REIT also continues to use its strong financial profile to acquire additional income-generating properties. These factors enable it to continue to grow its high-yielding dividend. Its ability to deliver steady growth no matter the market conditions makes Realty Income a smart buy right now for those seeking stable returns.

Nutanix escapes the datacentre with Cloud Native AOS
Nutanix escapes the datacentre with Cloud Native AOS
In another move beyond the bounds of strictly hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), Nutanix has launched Cloud Native AOS.
In other words, this is the operating system (OS) that underlies all its HCI products but available for deployment separately and without the need for a hypervisor. In this way, Nutanix hopes to enable its customers to extend from their core HCI deployments and to roll out, for example, Kubernetes containerisation on bare metal servers, as well as Kubernetes runtimes in the cloud.
Here, the aim for Nutanix is to allow customers to run what they want, anywhere they want. This, said marketing vice-president Lee Caswell, is distinct from the approach of many other suppliers.
“We consider that data and applications will be more distributed over time,” said Caswell. “That’s actually a different model than any hyperscaler who’s trying to concentrate all data and applications into a single cloud. Our view is it’s going to be multicloud, distributed applications and data.”
Nutanix was a pioneer of so-called hyper-converged infrastructure, which saw compute and storage bundled together in nodes that could connect in grid-like fashion to form clusters, often with server and storage components scalable independently.
This was a particularly attractive proposition – something like server-and-storage-in-a-box – to customers that lacked deep skillsets, as they were relatively easily deployable and scalable.
The idea that Nutanix should allow containers to run on its OS without the use of a hypervisor somewhat goes against the original principle it pioneered. But it announced elsewhere at this week’s event that customers can now use Pure Storage FlashArray arrays as external storage to its HCI nodes.
All of which seems to be a play to extend its market reach, especially among customers that may be seeking alternatives to VMware since it was acquired by Broadcom and underwent significant licensing changes.
Caswell said: “The way I like to think about Cloud Native AOS is we’re pushing further into cloud native, or deeper into the cloud and then further into the edge. And so, the way to think about this is that when you get into cloud native, it’s not the case that every instance is going to be running AHV [Acropolis hypervisor].”
“If you think about where we are today, with 27,000-plus customers, then when you think about getting to the edge, this tends to look like more of a distributed datacentre today. And when you get to the cloud with [Nutanix’s hybrid cloud platform] NC2, we’re bringing our full stack, including AHV, into the cloud.”
Here, Caswell has in mind a containerised AOS running on, for example, Amazon EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) and providing data services such as snapshots, replication and disaster recovery, all without requiring use of the Acropolis hypervisor.
“It goes back to the architectural advantage of AOS being architected independently of a hypervisor,” he said. “And so now we can containerise it and run it directly on the Kubernetes runtime that’s in the public cloud providers and our data services.”
Caswell added: “And if you look at the edge and how it is going to evolve over the next five years, my expectation is we’re going to see edge that’s going to be smaller deployments for things like running on a wind farm, or an oil rig, or in MRI centres. And these could be that they’re container only, and so you’ve got the opportunity now, for the first time, that the hypervisor is optional.
“Sure, you could run our existing stack, but you need a three-node cluster right to start, or you could start taking cloud native AOS and get down to smaller form factors in a very cost-effective manner.”
Cloud Native AOS is currently in early access on Amazon EKS, and will be generally available this summer. Early access for on-premise containerised environments on bare metal servers is expected to be available by the end of this year.

Finally, over in Metro Royale, there are a bunch of changes too, with train-themed areas in Arctic Base and Misty Port, as well as the new portable military server that lets you hack to gain valuable intel.
That’s still barely scratching the surface, but if PUBG Mobile still doesn’t scratch that battle royale itch once you’re done playing through this new update, then you’re in luck because we’ve collated our picks for the best battle royales on Android, too!

Fitzroy Crossing launches ‘Us Without Abuse’ to tackle family violence
Fitzroy Crossing launches ‘Us Without Abuse’ to tackle family violence
The streets of Fitzroy Crossing were awash with orange as hundreds of community members donned T-shirts to mark the launch of Us Without Abuse, a joint campaign by Kimberley Community Legal Services and the Marnin Women’s Centre.
The colour — symbolic of the fight against domestic violence — stood as a powerful statement against both domestic violence and elder abuse.

The campaign follows the deaths of two women, allegedly at the hands of their partners, in the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley in less than six months.
Police charged a Derby man with one count of ******* over the death of a 32-year-old Fitzroy Crossing woman on December 14 last year.

On Easter Sunday, a 38-year-old man was charged with the ******* of a 39-year-old woman in Mowanjum Aboriginal Community near Derby.
Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre CEO Emily Carter didn’t ****** words, calling for immediate action against family violence across the region in a speech.
“This is not just a message — it’s a movement. A call for accountability, healing and action. In the Fitzroy Valley, we don’t wait for solutions — we lead them,” Ms Carter said.
Despite the gravity of the matter, after speeches by leaders and a march led by Gurama Yani U (Men’s Shed), the community gathered on Fitzroy Oval to enjoy lunch, kids’ entertainment, and music performances by local artists.
The family-themed inclusive event showcased the Fitzroy Valley’s community spirit in times of darkness.

The Us Without Abuse campaign has spent the past six months tackling family violence and harmful behaviours across TV, radio, and online.
Featuring personal stories from Kimberley locals, the campaign works to destigmatise abuse and empower individuals to speak out.
Kimberley Community Legal Services CEO Christine Robinson said the partnerships with Kimberley organisations and leaders were elevating the campaign’s reach and message.
“We are excited to be joining local communities and organisations to bring the campaign face-to-face with people across the region,” Ms Robinson said.
The campaign has also been nominated for the upcoming Community Service Excellence Awards, with winners to be announced at the WACOSS Conference on Monday.
“Being recognised in the upcoming awards would be a brilliant way to amplify this powerful campaign and continue making a meaningful impact on such a vital issue,” Ms Robinson said.

Doctors Are Revealing The Biggest Medical Mysteries They’ve Ever Solved, And These Are Straight Out Of A TV Show
Doctors Are Revealing The Biggest Medical Mysteries They’ve Ever Solved, And These Are Straight Out Of A TV Show
While one might think it’s something that only exists on TV, medical mysteries pop up every day. Whether it’s an emergency or a chronic problem, these “unsolvable” cases cause a medical professional’s instincts to kick into overdrive…
That’s why when Redditor u/YaaaaaaaaasQueen asked, “Doctors of Reddit: what is the biggest medical mystery you’ve solved?” medical professionals flooded the comments with their heroic stories of saving “unsavable” patients. Without further ado, here are 15 of their most heart-pounding tales:
1.”During my second year of residency, I was called in to cover another resident for the weekend. One of the patients on the list was in her 80s and being transitioned to hospice due to ‘terminal delirium.’ She had come in confused and had been in the hospital for two weeks with mostly normal test results. Initially, doctors thought it was a UTI and treated her, but she didn’t get better. Her mental status worsened, and her fevers continued. No one could figure out what it was, but, because there was no answer, the family ultimately decided to try to take her to hospice rather than put her through more invasive testing.”

“She was still having intermittent fevers and was nearly unresponsive. Because she was constantly sleeping, she couldn’t answer any questions. Despite that, I knew exactly what was wrong within 20 seconds of meeting her. She would make weird facial expressions that lasted a few seconds, and then become unresponsive. It looked like something called tardive dyskinesia, a rare side effect of antipsychotic medications, so I looked back in her chart.”
“When she initially came in with a UTI, she was confused, so someone started her on a nightly antipsychotic to help with the ‘agitation’ and kept giving her the medicine because they thought it was helping. In reality, she was having a rare but potentially life-threatening reaction to the medicine called neuroleptic malignant syndrome. I checked a few labs, and her creatine kinase was high, which supported the diagnosis.”
“We stopped the medicine, and she walked out of the hospital a week later. I kept an eye on her chart for a long time, and she eventually passed away due to other causes. This was and still is one of my best catches.
As proud as I was for this one, it terrified me. It highlighted how the difference between someone living or dying occasionally rests on whether or not a doctor knows about a particular condition. Luckily, in her case, I had recently attended a lecture that included videos of those side effects, so I immediately recognized it. It doesn’t make me a better doctor than the people who saw her before. It was just meant to be that I got to treat her at that time.”

2.”This case wasn’t wildly mysterious, but it had the biggest impact: I was a psych intern doing rotations. As a psych rotation, you are guaranteed to get assigned the patients the attending doctors dread. So, in this particular situation, the attending doc hands me the folder with the oft-quoted, ‘Oh, this one is perfect for you.'”
“The patient was a female in her 40s and had been seeing a PCP for over a decade for ‘random stuff.’ She was described as anxious, dramatic, and attention-seeking. I noticed she had experienced transient intermittent neurological symptoms that seemingly affected random areas of her body. Over time, she stated that episodes happened more often, and she didn’t feel like she was bouncing back the same as before.
I talked with the attending and told him I thought we needed to do an MS workup. He rolled his eyes and said, ‘She got to you, huh?’ He said I could order a workup if the patient were willing to pay. So I did. It was the last week of that rotation, so I couldn’t follow up with her.
A couple of weeks later, I was on another rotation, but got a notification for a lab result. Since I ordered the entire workup, the results were sent to the attending doc and me. The patient was positive for MS. This poor woman had been dealing with untreated MS for over a decade. Her description of the symptoms would have been easy for even a first-year med student to put MS near the top of their differential. It still makes me angry for her.”

3.”Paramedic here: I was on a transfer for a kid with unspecified ‘Altered Mental Status.’ He was a young male patient who had become strangely altered without a known cause. The patient was hypotensive and tachycardic, and had rapidly lost weight since his last primary care appointment. The ER had drawn labs, all showing normal, so they had decided to send him to the pediatric center for further testing and monitoring.”
“I got on scene and looked at the patient, puzzled as to what was making him sick. While hooking him up to the cardiac monitor, I noticed he looked like my brother did as a kid. My brother was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency and had almost the same symptoms. As we were driving down the road, the patient was getting worse, so I gave him a dose of IV Dexamethasone (the only steroid we carried at the time). The mother and I waited for a change, and sure enough, the kid started to get better.
Later tests confirmed at the pediatric center that it was, in fact, an adrenal crisis, and he had undiagnosed Addison’s Disease. The doctor gave me props for figuring it out, but truthfully, I doubt I would have recognized it without knowing what to look for in my brother.”
—u/ThatGingerEMT
4.”I’m a genetic counselor who works in pediatric oncology, and this was one of my biggest ‘trust your gut’ situations: I saw an infant with a brain tumor who I was originally told had no family history of *******. Upon talking to the baby’s mom, I learned she had breast ******* in her 20s, and her own mother had died from a rare sarcoma in her 20s. Moreover, all of their maternal relatives had ******* at a young age.”
SDI Productions / Getty Images
“Interestingly, all genetic and tumor testing for both the infant and their mom was negative thus far. Usually, in that case, we say, ‘We don’t know every cause for ******* yet,’ and leave it as is. However, I couldn’t end things there in good faith because I suspected one particular ******* predisposition syndrome might be to blame.
I ordered a single-gene test on a whole-genome platform, which sequences far deeper into the gene than any other test. Labs don’t sequence that far because it’s extremely rare to find anything there, but sure enough, the test identified a mutation deep within this gene. It was the explanation for the child’s brain tumor and family history of *******.
It was certainly a devastating result, as this ******* syndrome is associated with a 100% lifetime risk for ******* of almost any type you can think of — it’s called Li-Fraumeni syndrome. However, I was so grateful to finally have an answer for this family because we can now pursue intensive surveillance for positive relatives that will be life-saving. Of course, this fueled my paranoia of ‘Is a negative ever truly negative?’ and intensified my desire to dig deeper for these kids.”

5.”A cool call I had as a paramedic many years ago initially annoyed my partner and me. A twenty-something-year-old male woke up with nausea and vomiting (it was a Sunday morning in a neighborhood known for partying). The call notes said there was a small amount of blood in the vomit, so it got up-triaged to paramedics responding.”
“When we arrived, the patient’s girlfriend was freaked out, but guided us to the patient, who was white as a sheet, drenched in sweat, vomiting pure blood into a trash can that was already full of it.
We start our assessment and learn he has always had digestive issues — chronic diarrhea, horrible hemorrhoids, etc. — and has to eat an extremely low-**** diet. We asked if he had been partying the night before. He said no because he can’t have more than one beer, or he’s a mess for days. He smoked some weed, but no more than usual, and he had smoked from the same bag earlier and was fine. He had never thrown up blood before. But, because he didn’t have insurance, he’d gone anywhere other than urgent care. He had an upper GI bleed, but something clicked in my lizard brain, and I realized precisely what was happening. His liver was SCREAMING for help.”
“He can’t digest ****, can’t process alcohol, and what seemed like an innocuous comment was the key to the whole thing — his hemorrhoids. If the circulation through your liver gets backed up, it causes pressure in the blood vessels that come in and out to build up. If enough pressure builds up, your ***** veins balloon out causing a hemorrhoid. If that pressure goes north, you can get esophageal varices, essentially the same as hemorrhoids, but in your throat. They can rupture and bleed profusely.”
“Despite our efforts, he lost a ton of blood and rapidly worsened. Upon arrival at the critical section of the ER, he passed out before being intubated and given blood transfusions.
The attending doctor was always aloof and didn’t play well with nurses or EMS. However, we returned later in the day with another patient, he pulled me aside to ask, ‘What exactly is the scope of your training? That was wild, you caught that!’ I reflected on that moment for the rest of my career.”

6.”I was on night shift when one of my junior colleagues called me to come help him with a puzzling patient. The patient’s oxygen saturation was fine while lying down without any supplemental oxygen, but when he would sit up, his saturation went to the 70s. Everyone thought it had to be an infection, a pulmonary embolism, etc. It had been going on for a while, but no one seemed to know what it was.”
PeopleImages / Getty Images
“Out of pure luck, I had seen a case like this at a large teaching hospital I’d worked at previously. I was puzzled when I saw it back then, but it stuck with me because it was unique — the condition is called platypnea orthodeoxia.
At first, I thought this patient couldn’t have it because, after all, it’s super rare! But I kept sitting him up, then lying him down, and seeing the oxygen levels wildly fluctuate with exact correlation to his posture. So I thought it was time to get cardiology involved so they could scan for a hole in the heart.
Lo and behold, he had one. After it was repaired, his symptoms went away. No one congratulated me on the diagnosis, but I was so happy I caught it when no one else could.”

7.”I’m not a ‘medical’ doctor, but I am a psychologist who made a life-changing diagnosis for my patient. This particular patient, a 67-year-old woman, came into my practice one day after her physician referred her to me about having anxiety alongside vertigo that had lasted for over a decade. The doctors couldn’t figure it out, so they thought it was psychosomatic. After a brief interview, she told me her symptoms had improved while she visited her sister for a week, but immediately returned when she got home.”
“I asked her who lived with her, and she told me she lives with her son, daughter-in-law, and their cat. Right then and there, I think, ‘This isn’t anxiety but allergies.’
I suggested she move the cat out of the house for a few weeks and do a deep cleaning. She returned a month later, telling me that she was no longer fatigued and all of her symptoms had disappeared, including the vertigo. She managed to get off the meds that she had taken for over a decade, all because of a cat..
I felt like I was Dr. House at that moment. It might not have been a huge medical mystery, but seeing her quality of life improve was worth it.”

8.”Not a doctor, but an EMT: I was called to the scene of a car accident. A man had crashed into a fence near a reservoir. He had vomited down the front of his shirt and had a large red mark on his forehead. The police were going to arrest him for a DUI, but asked me to check him out first.”
Bluecinema / Getty Images
“I asked him what had happened. He said he was on his way to pick up his son from school when an animal ran in front of him, causing him to swerve, hit a puddle, and skid into the fence. As he spoke, I could smell what I thought was alcohol on his breath. It was also around 7 p.m. on a sunny Sunday in July, there wasn’t a puddle in sight, and there were no skid marks. His story didn’t add up.
I asked how much he had had to drink that day. He insisted he hadn’t been drinking. I pressed a little, and he said, ‘I’m a *******, I do not touch alcohol.’ I asked if he was diabetic. He told me no. I then asked if he had ever been tested. Also no. That’s when it clicked: the ‘alcohol’ smell wasn’t alcohol at all. It was the fruity odor of diabetic ketoacidosis. My patient was an undiagnosed diabetic who had likely passed out behind the wheel.”
“That explained the ****** and the breath, but what about the vomiting and bizarre story? While I was puzzling that out, the patient asked to go to a small local hospital. Normally, a reasonable request, unless I have a trauma patient. I looked at the red mark on his forehead and decided to check his pupils — that’s when alarms went off.”
“With help from the police, we loaded him into the ambulance and expedited transport to the nearest trauma center. En route, he complained of severe head pain, said he could feel his pulse pounding in his head, and started screaming. His blood pressure was climbing every time I checked it.
When we arrived, the triage nurse tried to send him to general triage. I insisted he needed an immediate head CT. She pushed back. I grabbed a doctor, explained the situation, and he ordered a rush CT. As I suspected, the patient had a brain bleed. He went straight from CT into emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.
It’s probably the call I’m most proud of. If I had done one thing differently: if the police had arrested him, if I’d taken him to the wrong hospital, if I hadn’t argued for priority treatment, or if I hadn’t taken the time to really talk to him, his chances would have been so much worse. He might not have survived.”
—u/KunSeii
9.”Psychiatrist here: I moonlighted at a standalone Psych ER in residency. Emergency services brought in a man who didn’t speak English due to psychosis. With the help of an interpreter, we could identify that he was from Bhutan and had been a Freedom Fighter. But the interpreter told us that most of the patient’s words were incomprehensible.”
Susumu Yoshioka / Getty Images
“I noticed some tattoos that seemed amateur, possibly from his time in combat. It dawned on me he could have had hepatic encephalopathy from Hepatitis C. I arranged a transfer to a medical ER, and the staff there was upset with me. To their credit, they called back later that night to confirm I was correct, leading to a plan of appropriate medical care instead of inappropriate psychiatric care.”
—u/Particular-Bat-6509
10.”A young person came into the ER in an ambulance, unconscious. They were septic and losing two organ systems at the time of presentation (kidneys and liver). They can’t give a medical history because they are so out of it.”
“An IV contrast wasn’t much help because the patient didn’t have sufficient renal function. The images looked like vague grey mush: edema everywhere. I see four small gas bubbles: one in the portal vein, one in a tributary of the superior mesenteric vein, and two next to the ****** symphysis. These gas bubbles do not belong there and are a grim prognosticator. I have to make some kind of wild guess because this person is close to death.
I look closer and see erosions on the left ****** body. I call the surgeon and tell him to cut out the ****** symphysis (where the two ****** bones meet). I make the diagnosis in 20 minutes: septic arthritis.
They cut out the offending joint, and the patient walked out of the hospital a week later. A follow-up CT showed hundreds of liver abscesses from bacteremia — those cleared with continued antibiotics. My co-worker who read the follow-up CT congratulated me on a brilliant diagnosis.”
—u/Spiteblight
11.”Not the doctor, but I was taking care of a patient who was hospitalized for multiple days because of massive swings in her blood glucose. The doctors couldn’t figure out why her BG would be over 350 and climbing, and then 20 minutes later, it would ****** into the 40s. She was [taking] nothing by mouth for reasons I don’t recall, possibly a gastrointestinal infection, so we were pumping IV dextrose multiple times a shift to keep her alive. We were down to our last vial, and I was freaking out because I was working alone that night.”
Ljubaphoto / Getty Images
“I was working at a small rural outpost hospital that only had one doctor on call in the ER as needed for my unit overnight, and there was no support besides calling EMS for transports to a larger hospital over an hour away. I was so afraid of losing my patient.
I did a deep dive online between managing this patient’s crises and my other patients. I found a research paper on the topic of diabetics’ reactions to certain classes of antibiotics. I notified the hospitalist in the morning and provided the link to the paper, but never got a response.
I was off the next night, and the patient would be gone when I returned for my next shift. I was afraid she died, but was informed by the outgoing shift that she was discharged home because our hospitalist figured out it was the antibiotic causing the chaos and switched meds. Immediately, her blood glucose stabilized, and with the new antibiotic, the infection was brought under control.”
—u/Finklemaier
12.”Not me, but my attending doctor. We had an older guy with new severe hip pain, but his X-ray and MRI were normal. It didn’t add up, and she felt something else was happening to him. We got an MRI of his spine, and he had a huge abscess on it. Most of the time, you would expect to see weakness or sensory changes with a spinal abscess — he had none of that.”
“We imaged his whole spine and found a couple more spots of infection. Then we scanned his brain and found a large abscess. We also got an echocardiogram that showed a massive infection sitting on one of his heart valves. He had NO symptoms other than this sudden onset of hip pain.
Long story short, we think his diverticulitis let bacteria into his blood, and he was unlucky enough to have it affect his heart valve. After a truckload of antibiotics, he did great!”
—u/WoodsyAspen
13.”Not sure if this is a mystery, but I connected the dots in the last year of my residency: An 8-year-old kid came into the ER with fever, shortness of breath, and a small lower leg wound after falling two days before. He didn’t want to walk due to the pain in his leg (besides the wound, he had a bad limp).
Shironosov / Getty Images
“I was in the last year of my residency. Based on a physical exam alone, I diagnosed the patient with a fever from a septic hip and shortness of breath and fever from a pulmonary embolism. Labs and a CT scan proved I was right about everything.
I was just trying to be a smartass because I had a good relationship with the attending, and PE in kids is far less common than in adults, so I thought I would be obnoxious by throwing in the PE diagnosis. Ultimately, it was humbling because it made me think about what I’ve missed by not turning over rocks.”
—u/GibbsMalinowski
14.”It is not the biggest medical mystery I have solved, but the first that comes to mind: I was once moonlighting in an urgent care when a 5-year-old kid came in for cold symptoms. We talked about upper respiratory infections, supportive care, etc., I examined the kid, and when he was getting ready to leave, I noticed one nostril was putting out purulent drainage, and the other was clear. I asked his mom about it, and she told me that his nostrils always drained; she had been told it was allergies. You don’t get allergies in just one nostril.”
“I also noticed that the room smelled foul (it smelled this way frequently, so it wasn’t remarkable, however, it was particularly terrible in this case). So I got a little bulb syringe and suctioned out as much as possible. I saw something in the kid’s nostril, but couldn’t determine what it was with all the mucus, so I grabbed some forceps, reached in, and pulled out a 3-inch chunk of wood.
The kid’s mom started crying. She told me he had had this problem for a few years and had seen multiple doctors, but no one had fixed his problem. He had been relentlessly made fun of at school because of the smell. It only took 15 minutes of my time, but it made a big impact on them.”
—u/Outrageous_Card7308
15.”I’m a dentist and this isn’t a huge mystery, but one that drove me nuts for four years: I had a patient with severe acid erosion on all of his teeth, but one area in particular was the worst. I figured he had to be obsessively eating something acidic and chewing it with one side of his mouth. I would interrogate him every visit to determine what was causing it. I probably asked him 50 times if he liked to eat sour candy, and he always replied, ‘Not really.'”
Dowell / Getty Images
“One day, we had a long appointment together, and I just decided to name every sour candy I could think of while I worked. When I said ‘Cry Babies’, he said, ‘Mmm, I like those, they’re so sour!’
Come to find out he was eating one or two bags per day. What did he think I was asking about when I asked if he had liked to eat sour candy all these years?”

This 11% Dividend is Backed by the Steadiest NAV We’ll Ever See
This 11% Dividend is Backed by the Steadiest NAV We’ll Ever See
Vanilla investors fixate on price. We contrarians know better.
It’s all about the NAV. Net asset value, baby.
Price is what people pay at a given moment. But people panic. Many like to buy high and sell low!
NAV, on the other hand, is what something is worth at that same moment. Price and NAV can become disconnected, especially during emotional market moments. When this happens, it is often a buying opportunity for careful contrarians like us.
Let’s take a pop quiz. Think about the funds you hold in your portfolio. What was your top-performing NAV for the month of April?
I’ll share mine, with respect to our Contrarian Income Report portfolio. FS Credit Opportunities (NYSE:) wins the top award for CIR with an unwavering NAV during April, the most volatile month since March 2020!
Dark it was. April 2025 began with a 12% drawdown in the . “America’s ticker”—the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:)—took a licking! SPY’s NAV fell by an equal amount as its price—nearly 12% in 8 days—because investors dumped shares in the 503 stocks it owns. SPY’s NAV is “marked to market” constantly as its underlying shares trade.
This is the drawback of an NAV that is attached to other publicly traded positions. If the contents of the basket plummet in a panic, so does the fund’s NAV wrapper:
SPY’s NAV Plummets in April’s Panic
FSCO does not have this problem because its investments are in the calculated, relatively calm private markets rather than the manic, often-panicking public. The team extends private market loans, where FS can dictate favorable terms that secure its NAV.
Think of FSCO as a BDC (business development company) in a CEF wrapper. But it’s better than most BDCs. FSCO uses lower leverage and has a lower cost structure than the sector-at-large. Case in point, VanEck BDC Income ETF (NYSE:) saw its NAV drop nearly 14% in the first eight days of April!
But while SPY and BIZD were in NAV freefalls, FSCO’s portfolio held up incredibly well. It didn’t budge!
FSCO’s NAV Unmoved in April’s Panic
With such an impressive pedigree, you might guess that FSCO trades at a premium to its NAV because every income investor on the planet would want in. The fund pays an 11% payout in monthly installments, and its NAV never moves. What’s not to like?
Amazingly, though, FSCO has traded at a discount since we first covered it here at Contrarian Outlook. In fact, when we added it to our Contrarian Income Report portfolio in October, it offered a 10% discount. Which meant this fine fund was a first-class find—available for just 90 cents on the dollar!
Why? The fund has been around for 10+ years but only traded publicly as a closed-end fund for the last two. CEF investors loathe newness. We want proof the income will last.
So. I called Josh Blum, Head of Investor Relations for FS Global Credit, to discuss. How is this incredible performance even possible during the most volatile month in recent memory?
“The NAV resilience reflects the focus on senior secured and structured credit strategies, which tend to exhibit lower correlation to the broader equity market movements,” Josh explained to me.
Portfolio manager Andrew Beckman and his team are skilled at “layering” credit, or structuring loans with different levels of protection, so that FSCO is positioned to get paid back first even if credit conditions worsen. Josh went on to explain that Beckman also deploys hedges from time to time to smooth out volatility.
“Strong underwriting fundamentals and limited mark-to-market exposure further supported the NAV stability,” Josh continued. His key point here is that FSCO is extending high-quality loans that are not subject to the daily whims of the public markets. These are private credit vehicles held by sophisticated investors who don’t care if the S&P 500 is down on a given day—they want their yield!
As do we income investors. Since we added FSCO to our Contrarian Income Report portfolio in October, this fund has been a rock with no NAV movement. This has not limited our gains, though! We have enjoyed total returns of 13.1% thanks to monthly dividends and price gains from FSCO’s shrinking discount window. These returns annualize to a terrific 23.4%.
FSCO Since October Add to CIR Portfolio
All looks great in the rearview mirror! But I wanted to know how conditions “on the ground” are looking to FS Credit today. Josh elaborated:
“We remain cautious credit pickers looking for value-based opportunities. Private credit remains a very large focus, but if public markets become dislocated due to tariff-driven volatility, we will migrate to that opportunity set from time to time.”
For us income investors, FSCO is a fantastic opportunity.

Two Belgian teenagers found with 5,000 ants in Kenya given $7,700 fine or 1-year prison sentence
Two Belgian teenagers found with 5,000 ants in Kenya given $7,700 fine or 1-year prison sentence
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Two Belgian teenagers found with 5,000 ants in Kenya were given a choice of paying a fine of $7,700 or serving 12 months in prison — the maximum penalty for the offense — for violating wildlife conservation laws.
Authorities said the ants were destined for European and Asian markets in an emerging trend of trafficking lesser-known wildlife species.
Belgian nationals Lornoy David and Seppe Lodewijckx, both 19 years old, were arrested on April 5 with 5,000 ants at a guest house in Nakuru county, which is home to various national parks. They were charged on April 15.
Magistrate Njeri Thuku, sitting at the court in Kenya’s main airport on Wednesday, said in her ruling that despite the teenagers telling the court they were naïve and collecting the ants as a hobby, the particular species of ants they collected is valuable and they had thousands of them — not just a few.
The Kenya Wildlife Service had said the teenagers were involved in trafficking the ants to markets in Europe and Asia, and that the species included messor cephalotes, a distinctive, large and red-colored harvester ant native to East Africa.
“This is beyond a hobby. Indeed, there is a biting shortage of messor cepholates online,” Thuku said in her ruling.
The ******** export of the ants “not only undermines Kenya’s sovereign rights over its biodiversity but also deprives local communities and research institutions of potential ecological and economic benefits,” KWS said in a statement.
In a separate but related case, two other men charged after they were found with 400 ants were also fined $7,700 each with an option of serving 12 months in prison.
Duh Hung Nguyen, a Vietnamese national, told the court that he was sent to pick up the ants and arrived at Kenya’s main airport where he met his contact person, Dennis Ng’ang’a, and together they travelled to meet the locals who sell the ants.
Ng’ang’a, who is from Kenya, had said he didn’t know it was ******** because ants are sold and eaten locally.
Magistrate Thuku during the ruling described Ng’ang’a and Nguyen’s meet-up as “part of an elaborate scheme.”
Experts in Kenya have in recent days warned of an emerging trend to traffic lesser-known wildlife species.
Entomologist Shadrack Muya, a senior lecturer at Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, told The Associated Press that garden ants are important for aerating soils, enhancing soil fertility and dispersing seeds.
“Ants play a very important role in the environment and their disturbance, which is also their removal, will lead to disruption of the ecosystem,” he said.
Muya warned against taking ants from their natural habitats, saying they were unlikely to survive if not supported to adapt to their new environment.
“Survival in the new environment will depend on the interventions that are likely to take place. Where it has been taken away from, there is a likelihood of an ecological disaster that may happen due to that disturbance,” he said.
