  5. Maguire wants Mam to prove he’s up for Broncos badge Maguire wants Mam to prove he’s up for Broncos badge Michael Maguire has declared that Ezra Mam must earn the right to wear Brisbane’s jersey again, refusing to give a timeline on the five-eighth’s NRL return. Mam will be left to make his rugby league comeback in Queensland Cup this weekend, after being overlooked for the Broncos’ clash with South Sydney on Friday. The Brisbane star has not played since being injured last August, before copping a nine-match ban for crashing a car while driving unlicensed and with drugs in his system last October. Maguire insisted the call to leave Mam out of the Rabbitohs clash was purely a football-based one, with the 22-year-old told to prove his form for Souths-Logan. “Firstly, he’s got to play,” Maguire said. “I always look at teams and building culture in teams that you have to earn the right to put the badge on. It’s something the players have all spoken about. “What I mean by that is actually performance on the field as well, and off the field. “Ezra has to go away and perform now and show the way he can play and then I’ll look at it from there.” Maguire said he was confident Mam would be able to handle the spotlight, with the focus likely to remain on the Indigenous star until an NRL return comes. Mam was fined $120,000 by the NRL and has since attended a rehabilitation facility in the time since the incident, with the Broncos coach believing his half had learnt from the affair. And Maguire was adamant this was not a case of the 2023 grand-final star having to win back the respect of his teammates. “I don’t know if you call it respect,” Maguire said. “It’s about performance. You have to perform to be able to show yourself. “Every player who has played until this point have all earned the opportunities in the way they have trained and way they have performed. I am big on that.” Maguire said he did not know when Mam’s likely return would come, with part of that decision also the form of Ben Hunt and Adam Reynolds as a halves pairing. The fifth-placed Broncos have been one of several sides to be wildly inconsistent this year. Hunt will likely move to hooker on Mam’s return and Brisbane may also lose Hunt to State of Origin duties, but that will not come until later in the year with byes before the first two games. “Ezra getting back to the form that we know he’s capable of, he’s got to put a lot of pressure on pushing himself into the team,” Maguire said. “Let’s see how he plays. For him he has done a lot of work in the background. “For any player who hasn’t played for five months, you can’t just think you’re going to come out (and fire). “You’ve got to be on. Every play matters. “When you haven’t been out there practising all the little movements … teams are going to try and put pressure on you. You’ve got to handle that pressure.” Source link #Maguire #Mam #prove #hes #Broncos #badge Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Stock market today: Live updates Stock market today: Live updates A trader works, as a screen broadcasts a news conference by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell following the Fed rate announcement, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., May 7, 2025. Brendan McDermid | Reuters Stock futures were relatively unchanged on Wednesday evening on the heels of the Federal Reserve holding steady on rates as it highlighted rising inflation and unemployment risks. S&P 500 futures traded down by 0.1%. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 55 points, or 0.1%. Nasdaq-100 futures were marginally lower. The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark overnight borrowing rate at 4.25% to 4.5%, a move that was widely expected. The rate has remained in that range since the central bank’s December meeting, when it cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point. “Uncertainty about the economic outlook has increased further,” the Fed wrote in its post-meeting statement. “The Committee is attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate and judges that the risks of higher unemployment and higher inflation have risen.” That said, Fed Chair Jerome Powell dismissed the idea of a “preemptive” rate cut to get ahead of any potential impacts from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, seeing that inflation is still “running above target.” “We actually don’t know what the right responses to the data will be until we see more data,” he said during a press conference Wednesday. “The Federal Reserve is in a bind – with concerns about inflation and an economic slump, which will lead to higher unemployment, pulling them in two opposite directions,” said Chris Zaccarelli, Northlight Asset Management’s chief investment officer. “The markets are going to increasingly worry about a recession, and unless some trade deals are made before the tariff pause runs out, we are going to see markets drop again like they did in early April.” The S&P 500 gyrated following the Fed decision before ultimately finishing 0.43% higher, supported by a more than 3% rise in Nvidia. The move in the artificial intelligence darling came after Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration is planning to end trade restrictions on chips. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also gained 0.27%, while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7%. Investors are now looking ahead to other economic reports due to be released on Thursday. Weekly jobless claims data is set to be released before the opening bell at 8:30 a.m. ET, while the New York Fed Survey of Consumer Expectations is slated for later in the day. Meanwhile, this stacked earnings week continues Thursday, with energy name ConocoPhillips and media giant Warner Bros. Discovery scheduled to report before market open. Fellow legacy media company Paramount Global is set to release its earnings after market close, along with others like travel company Expedia. In extended trading, shares of AppLovin jumped more than 13% in extended trading after the company topped Wall Street’s expectations with its latest quarterly results and announced that it’s agreed to sell its mobile gaming business. Arm Holdings, however, dropped more than 11% after the semiconductor name issued disappointing guidance. Leah Millis | Reuters There will be an Oval Office news conference about a major trade deal with the U.S. on Thursday “with representatives of a big, and highly respected, country” at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT), U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday. Trump added that it would be the first of many but provided no further details, including which country. Trump’s top officials have engaged in a flurry of meetings with trading partners since the president on April 2 imposed a 10% tariff on most countries, along with higher tariff rates for many trading partners, though those rates were later suspended for 90 days. He has also imposed 25% tariffs on autos, steel and aluminum, 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and 145% tariffs on China. On Tuesday, Trump said that he and top administration officials would review potential trade deals over the next two weeks to decide which ones to accept. 14. Marcus Thompson resigns as JSU president. Second president to resign in 2 years. What we know Marcus Thompson resigns as JSU president. Second president to resign in 2 years. What we know Jackson State University President Marcus Thompson has submitted his resignation, continuing the challenges and leadership turmoil at Jackson’s largest university. The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning announced Thompson’s resignation Wednesday afternoon, May 7 in a one paragraph release. A specific reason was not given, but said the resignation was “effective immediately.” Thompson’s departure continues the steady churn at the top of the state’s largest HBCU. Thompson was the is the seventh president at Jackson State in the last 16 years. The resignation comes barely two years after his predecessor, Thomas K. Hudson, resigned in March of 2023. Hudson had been on paid leave after the faculty senate had given him a vote of no confidence. Thompson’s resignation also comes just days after JSU graduation. Denise Jones Gregory, provost and vice president of academic affairs will step in as interim president. Tougaloo commencement controversy: Tougaloo receives threats after U.S. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett gives commencement speech Controversy around hiring of Marcus Thompson Thompson’s path to presidency has been the subject of public discourse and litigation since the IHL promoted the president from within instead of hiring an applicant from the national search; Thompson at the time was the IHL’s Deputy Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer. During the last IHL meeting of 2023, the agenda was nearing the end without the board publicly naming a permanent JSU president. In the eight months prior, Elayne Hayes-Anthony had served as acting president after the IHL put former Hudson on paid administrative leave. As the Nov. 2023 meeting was nearing a close, applause broke out from behind closed doors, and board trustees did not explain why. Later, the applause was linked with the appointment of Thompson as the 13th permanent JSU president. More in education news Tougaloo faculty votes no confidence on president, provost and registrar. See concerns During the national search, Hayes-Anthony publicly advocated to stay in the position as permanent president. When the JSU Faculty Senate issued a vote of no confidence for Hudson, which eventually led to his resignation, the university’s faculty publicly supported Hayes-Anthony as the next president. Hayes-Anthony did not make it past initial interview rounds in the national search for a new president. On Nov. 16, the same day the IHL appointed Thompson, Debra Mays-Jackson, the JSU chief of staff, filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court Southern District of Mississippi alleging sex discrimination by the IHL as Mays-Jackson was denied an interview during the national search. According to a Jan. 6, 2025 court order, Thompson was not one of the 79 applicants in the national search. On May 28, 2024 Mays-Jackson filed suit again against the IHL alleging violations of Title VII. In the suit, Mays-Jackson said that the IHL practice of hiring individuals who did not apply has only ever benefitted male candidates. In early Feb. 2024, just over 70 days after Thompson began his new role, the JSU president sat down for an exclusive interview with the Clarion Ledger. When asked about his path to presidency, Thompson said he had no reservations or concerns about his appointment from an internal search rather than a national search. At the time, Thompson told the Clarion Ledger that every time an internal promotion had occurred, “great things have happened.” Denise Jones Gregory was named interim president of Jackson State University on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. See their journey: Jackson State’s Sonic ***** of the South joins Travis Scott at Coachella. How it happened Thompson’s appointment was the second time in recent years the IHL has chosen a university president from within. In 2019, Glenn Boyce, the IHL commissioner at the time, was named as the new chancellor of the University of Mississippi. The decision, which came after a lengthy national search, was met with backlash from some University of Mississippi students and community members who felt the national search has not been taken seriously. Before becoming JSU president, Thompson had an education career spanning more than 20 years, in which he served roles in early childhood, K-12 and higher education as well as a liaison between the IHL Commissioner’s Office, the IHL and Mississippi’s eight public universities, including JSU. 15. Fed holds rates, says tariffs could cause stagflation Fed holds rates, says tariffs could cause stagflation Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks during a news conference following a Federal Open Market Committee meeting at the William McChesney Martin Jr. Federal Reserve Board Building on May 7, 2025 in Washington, DC. Andrew Harnik | Getty Images When the Federal Open Market Committee met in March, U.S. President Donald Trump had yet to unleash his so-called “reciprocal” tariffs on the world. But Fed policymakers were already bracing for the impact of trade barriers. At the conclusion of that meeting, the FOMC lowered its economic forecast for the U.S. and hiked its inflation projection. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said “a good part” of the downbeat forecast “is coming from tariffs.” On April 2, Trump stunned even the most pessimistic of market watchers when he held aloft the board with a list of higher-than-expected tariffs on many countries. Even though Trump has since paused them, the Fed seems to be operating on the (very uncertain) assumption Trump could reinstate those eye-watering levies at any moment. At the FOMC’s most recent meeting that concluded Wednesday, Powell no longer pulled punches in his post-meeting press conference, as he did in March. This time, he placed the responsibility squarely on Trump’s tariffs, saying they “are likely” to cause hotter inflation, slower economic growth and higher unemployment — recipes for a stagflationary scenario. So far, that’s the clearest warning from a U.S. authority about the damage tariffs could wreak. However, considering that Trump has not only expressed frustrations with Powell, but also said on Wednesday he wouldn’t consider lowering the 145% tariff on China to start trade negotiations with the country, it’s unlikely that Trump would heed the Fed’s caution. What you need to know today The Fed holds rates and warns of downturnThe U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept its key interest rate steady in a range between 4.25%-4.5%, where it has been since December. In his press conference after the Fed meeting, Chair Jerome Powell said Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs were “substantially larger than anticipated,” and “are likely to generate a rise in inflation, a slowdown in economic growth, and an increase in unemployment.” Stock jumps buoy U.S. indexesU.S. stocks rose Wednesday. The S&P 500 added 0.43%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.7%, boosted by a 10.8% jump in Disney shares, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.27%. Retail stocks fell 2.2% on news that sales fell by 0.1% month on month in both the euro zone and the European Union in March, according to preliminary data from Eurostat. White House to simplify chip export rulesNvidia shares jumped 3.1% as the Trump administration prepared to rescind what’s known as the “AI diffusion rule.” The rule, which was proposed by the Biden administration, sorts countries into three different tiers, all of which have different restrictions on whether advanced artificial intelligence chips such as those made by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices can be shipped to the country without a license. AI could replace search engines: AppleAlphabet shares slumped 7.5% and that of Apple dropped 1.1% after Eddy Cue, Apple’s services chief, said he believes that AI search engines will eventually replace standard ones such as Google, according to Bloomberg. Cue said he expects to add artificial intelligence services from OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic as search options in Apple’s Safari browser in the future, according to the report. Arm gives weak guidanceShares of Arm tumbled more than 11% in extended trading after the chip-design company issued weaker-than-expected guidance for the current quarter. Arm projected that earnings per share will be between 30 cents and 38 cents, lower than analysts’ expectations of 42 cents. The middle range of Arm’s revenue forecast also falls short of estimates, according to LSEG. Arm beat expectations for its fiscal fourth quarter. 17. Blow for footy legend over drunken assault claims Blow for footy legend over drunken assault claims Dual-code rugby star Wendell Sailor will have to wait more than nine months to defend himself against claims he drunkenly assaulted two men after he was asked to leave a pub. The 50-year-old former Wallabies player allegedly refused to leave the vicinity of a bar in Sydney’s city centre on November 6. He is accused of assaulting two men – one of whom he allegedly intimidated – during a violent altercation outside the venue. The NRL and rugby union international has pleaded not guilty to two counts of common assault, behaving in an offensive manner, refusing to leave a licensed premises and intimidation. He is due to fight the allegations in a hearing in late February 2026 involving 21 witnesses, including 12 police officers. “It’s a larger case,” Sailor’s lawyer Joseph Giang told Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday. He said the alleged violent altercation was captured on surveillance cameras and body cameras worn by police officers, which will be played during the hearing. The hearing was initially expected to run for two days but Magistrate Hugh Donnelly set it down for three days after questioning whether all the evidence could be heard in that time. The matter will return to court in November to ensure the full brief of evidence has been served on Sailor’s lawyers before the hearing begins on February 18. Sailor, who was not required to appear in court on Thursday, will remain on bail. He represented Australia in both rugby league and rugby union, distinguishing himself as the top try-scorer when the national side won the Rugby League World Cup in 2000. Sailor also proved a prolific scorer during a four-year rugby union stint, crossing 13 times in 37 games for the Wallabies and earning a start in the 2003 World Cup final. He finished his 222-game NRL career in 2009 after nine seasons with the Brisbane Broncos and two seasons with St George Illawarra. 18. Elon Musk faces backlash over 16-foot fence around Austin suburb mansion Elon Musk faces backlash over 16-foot fence around Austin suburb mansion AUSTIN (KXAN) — Neighbors in an Austin suburb are frustrated by a 16-foot fence around a nearly 7,000 square-foot property, widely reported to be owned by tech billionaire, Elon Musk. It is located off Stratford Reserve Place, which is on the edge of West Lake Hills’ city limits. The debate over the fence made its way to West Lake Hills’ Zoning & Planning Commission meeting on April 16. Tisha Ritta with Central Texas Permit Partners, LLC, served as the applicant representing the home owner. She listed six variance requests for the property, including the existence of a 16.5-foot-tall fence that goes against the city’s code limit of a six-foot maximum fence. The City of West Lake Hills said the fence was put up without a permit three years ago. (Photo: KXAN) The City of West Lake Hills said the fence was put up without a permit three years ago. (Photo: KXAN) The City of West Lake Hills said the fence was put up without a permit three years ago. (Photo: KXAN) ‘No permit was obtained’ During the meeting, Ritta claimed the variances are needed for privacy and security concerns. She acknowledged that the fence was installed without a permit back in 2022 when the home was originally purchased. “No permit was obtained prior to installation,” Ritta said. “This was an oversight by the property manager at the time.” Ritta said once the violations were received last year, they’ve been actively working with the city to resolve this. “The owner did go through great extent, you know, spent a lot of money to implement vegetation, the trees and everything around the fence,” Ritta said. “It coordinates with the neighborhood.” City staff recommended the commission approve the variances with conditions like: Changing the chain link fence to “decorative fence material” Allowing the front yard’s fence to encroach up to the property line Concerns from people nearby Neighbors at the meeting said they opposed “any and all variances request to be granted.” Three additional properties on the **** de sac wrote a letter to the commission against the request. Paul Hemmer, a neighbor, said variances would “do nothing but just facilitate their bad behavior on our quiet little **** de sac, which at times appears to be a parking lot with many cars parked every which way.” Hemmer alleged the property appeared to be used as a security office, as opposed to a residence. “Shift change happens three times a day, with cars coming and going, along with most of these employees ordering food deliveries all hours of the night and day,” Hemmer alleged during the commission meeting. One commissioner, who was not identified in a recording of the meeting, said she could not believe city staff was putting forth any recommendation for exceptions. “I’m astounded that the staff is putting forth any kind of suggestion that we bend based on who is asking, because Westlake is full of important people,” the commissioner said. “We are not here to judge personal needs of the occupants. We’re here to judge physical needs of the land.” The City of West Lake Hills said the fence was put up without a permit three years ago. (Photo: KXAN) Ultimately, commissioners voted against the city staff’s recommendations. The commissioners forwarded this to city council with a recommendation for denial of all variance requests for “lack of appropriate hardships.” City council will discuss this at a meeting on June 11. 23. Labour MPs signal rebellion over benefits cuts Labour MPs signal rebellion over benefits cuts A number of Labour MPs have said they will vote against the government’s proposed cuts to disability benefits. Nine Labour MPs voiced concern over the government’s plans to make it harder for people with less severe conditions to claim disability payments during a debate on Wednesday. Calls to rethink the benefits cuts, as well as other policies, have been growing after Labour lost 187 council seats during the local election last week. Disability minister Sir Stephen Timms told the MPs the goal of the reforms was to make sure the ******** system was “financially sustainable in the long term”. In March, the government announced a major ******** shake-up aimed at saving money and supporting people who can work to find jobs. Ministers said changes to a key disability benefit called personal independence payment (Pip) and universal credit (UC) would save around £5bn a year by the end of 2030 and get more people into work. Overall, the government spends £65bn a year on health and disability-related benefits. Before the government announced the Pip and UC changes, this was projected to increase to £100bn by 2029. The government estimated that 3.2 million families could be worse off as a result of the reforms, while 3.8 million families will be better off by 2030. The government is expected to pass a new law to make the ******** changes, giving MPs a chance to vote on the plans. Speaking during the debate in Westminster Hall, Diane Abbott, the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, said the government was “making a conscious choice to balance its books on the backs of people on ********”. Ian Byrne, who represents Liverpool West Derby, said he would “swim through vomit to vote against” proposed ******** changes. Labour MPs Richard Burgon, Rachael Maskell, Andy McDonald, Cat Eccles, Nadia Whittome, Imran Hussain, Steve Witherden and Ian Lavery also said they would vote against the government’s proposals. They were joined by John McDonnell, an independent MP for Hayes and Harlington who had the whip removed by Labour for rebelling against the government over the two-child benefit cap. A number of other Labour MPs have also indicated they are minded to oppose the benefits cuts in comments at events, in articles for local papers, as well as on social media. Disability minister Sir Stephen Timms defended the proposals, saying it was not sustainable for ******** spending to rise at the current rate. “The current system produces poor employment outcomes, high economic inactivity, low living standards, high costs to the taxpayer. It needs to change,” he said. “We want a more proactive, pro-work system that supports people better and supports the economy as well.” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has come under increasing pressure to change course on some policy decisions. At Prime Minister Questions on Wednesday, Sir Keir defended the decision to axe winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners. It came after a group of about 45 Labour MPs representing seats in northern England and the Midlands joined those urging the government to rethink the move. The planned changes to disability benefits could become the next big political flashpoint, with legislation likely to be brought to the House of Commons in June. The BBC has been told some potential rebels are being assured they won’t lose the party whip if they abstain – or make themselves scarce – when the vote comes. The government is not at risk of defeat, given Labour has a large majority, but a sizable rebellion could show the extent of the discontent within the party. Senior minister Pat McFadden said “we have to win the fight for Britain’s future” while speaking at the Parliamentary Labour Party’s first gathering since the local elections, party sources said. The Cabinet Office minister criticised Reform ***, including the new mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, who said her party would “reset Britain to its glorious past” in her victory speech. McFadden said: “Labour is always at its best when we look to the future. This is the fight of our lives, this is the generational fight in this new political era. “I want to tell you we have to take on this new fight for the future – and we have to win.” Source link #Labour #MPs #signal #rebellion #benefits #cuts Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  24. Jay-Z slams ***** accuser in lawsuit amendment Jay-Z slams ***** accuser in lawsuit amendment Jay-Z has blasted the “shocking and reckless disregard for the truth” that his ***** accuser has allegedly shown. The 99 Problems hitmaker is suing the anonymous Jane Doe and her lawyers for malicious prosecution and defamation and in an amended complaint filed on Monday. He alleged the woman had “not stopped” making statement about him, despite agreeing in February to voluntarily dismiss her ******* assault lawsuit against him. In documents obtained by Rolling Stone, Jay claimed that as recently as 11 April, the woman posted a lip-synched video on Tik Tok which stated: “You couldn’t pay me a million dollars to get an apology video out of me, I stand on what I said, f**k you.” The amended complaint stated: “By refusing to apologise, and continuing to ‘stand on what (she) said,’ despite all the evidence and, indeed, her own admissions to the contrary, Doe continues to display a shocking and reckless disregard for the truth that is both intentional and malicious. “Doe never had any reasonable grounds to support any truth in her statements and acted with reckless disregard for the truth. In other words, she lied.” Jay also accused lawyer Tony Buzbee of tampering with Wikipedia pages. The filing stated: “Buzbee directed his employees to edit Wikipedia pages to enhance Buzbee’s image and damage Mr. Carter’s and Roc Nation’s reputations. “Users with an IP address directly linked to the Buzbee Firm made over 100 positive edits to Buzbee’s Wikipedia page.” The amended complaint came in response to Jane Doe and her lawyer challenging his lawsuit by arguing he had failed to show the “special injury” needed to pursue his case and insisted his prior claim that Roc Nation lost out on an unspecified $US20 million ($A31 million) deal as a result were not sufficient. But in his amendment, Jay – whose real name is Shawn Carter – claimed the sum represented the “minimum fee guarantee” for an undisclosed contract and the full figure “would have been many millions of dollars higher had the contract been performed.” The 55-year-old rapper also alleged the ***** accusation harmed his ability to pursue new opportunities. The complaint stated: “As a result of defendants’ filing of the false lawsuit and other false public statements against Mr. Carter, Mr. Carter was denied a $US55 million ($A86 million) personal credit line.” It also claimed that Roc Nation – of which Jay is a 50 per cent owner – had been denied a $US115 million ($A179 million) loan and he and the company are “inextricably tied”. In response, Buzbee insisted the case is “meritless” and “should be dismissed”. Of the Wikipedia claim, he said: “That’s a first for me and is incredibly weak.” Source link #JayZ #slams #***** #accuser #lawsuit #amendment Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  25. ‘Penny’s law’: NYC dog attack inspires legislation to hold owners accountable ‘Penny’s law’: NYC dog attack inspires legislation to hold owners accountable Ken Philipps, known as “the dog bite attorney,” joins NewsNation to weigh in on a dog attack that’s sparked national outrage. In New York City, a 16-pound Chihuahua named Penny was mauled by two pit bulls in an attack caught on camera. Bystanders rushed in to help, but Penny suffered serious injuries, including multiple puncture wounds and two six-inch gashes. Her owners say it’s a miracle she survived. Police told them they couldn’t take action because, under New York law, dogs are considered property, making the incident a civil matter. Now, state lawmakers are proposing “Penny’s Law,” which would criminalize negligent dog handling and penalize owners who flee the scene of an attack.
