  1. Origin story of COVID virus rewritten, challenging lab leak theory Origin story of COVID virus rewritten, challenging lab leak theory New research is rewriting the origin story of the virus that triggered the deadly COVID pandemic. Challenging the idea that the pandemic was caused by a lab leak, scientists now believe they know when and where the virus first emerged. COVID, which first emerged in humans in Wuhan in central China in December 2019, is calculated to have caused up to 36 million deaths worldwide. It’s believe the virus that causes it left the area where it first emerged among animals in China or northern Laos several years before jumping across to humans 2700 kilometres away in Wuhan. While the primary host of the virus was a horseshoe bat, the virus was only able to travel the distance to where the human cases were first detected by “hitching a ride” there with other animals via the wildlife trade, according to the research published in Cell. Researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine made the finding after analysing the family tree of virus strains SARS-CoV-1, which caused the SARS pandemic of 2002-2004, and the SARS-CoV-2, which caused the COVID pandemic — mapping their evolutionary history before they emerged in humans. “We show that the original SARS-CoV-1 was circulating in Western China — just one to two years before the emergence of SARS in Guangdong Province, South Central China, and SARS-CoV-2 in Western China or Northern Laos — just five to seven years before the emergence of COVID-19 in Wuhan,” researcher Jonathan E. Pekar said. Given the distances that both viruses would have had to cover so quickly, it is highly improbable that they could have been carried there via the bats alone, they concluded. Much more likely, they say, is that they were transported there accidentally by wild animal traders via intermediate host animals. “The viruses most closely related to the original SARS coronavirus were found in palm civets and raccoon dogs in southern China, hundreds of miles from the bat populations that were their original source,” said co-senior author Michael Worobey. “For more than two decades the scientific community has concluded that the live-wildlife trade was how those hundreds of miles were covered. We’re seeing exactly the same pattern with SARS-CoV-2.” The findings challenge the view that SARS-CoV-1 emerged naturally, but SARS-CoV2 was the result of a lab leak. “At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a concern that the distance between Wuhan and the bat virus reservoir was too extreme for a zoonotic origin,” co-senior author Joel Wertheim said. “This paper shows that it isn’t unusual and is, in fact, extremely similar to the emergence of SARS-CoV-1 in 2002.” It’s hoped that by continuing to sample wild bat populations for viruses, scientists will be able to prepare for and control future outbreaks. Debate about the origins of COVID-19 has raged since the pandemic took hold in 2019-2020. The CIA said in January the pandemic was more likely to have emerged from a lab in China than from nature, after the agency had for years said it could not reach a conclusion on the matter. 2. ********* pope could revive priestly vocations in Catholic bastion ********* pope could revive priestly vocations in Catholic bastion As cardinals gather in the ******** to elect a new pope — with a ********* among the favourites — the church in Asia’s most Catholic country is grappling with a decline in those with a vocation for the priesthood. “According to the statistics we have… one priest is catering to around 9,000 Catholics,” John Alfred Rabena, chancellor of UST Central Seminary, one the country’s oldest, said this week. It is a situation that was leading to “exhaustion” among an overworked clergy, he told AFP during a visit to the seminary’s art deco building on the sprawling University of Santo Tomas campus. Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is among the favourites to succeed Pope Francis, while another *********, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, has emerged as a late dark horse candidate. While officially cautioned not to campaign for their countrymen, clergymen in the Philippines told AFP they believe a ********* pope could inspire a surge in recruits to the flagging ranks of the priesthood. Father Robert Reyes, a well-known activist priest, said he sounded the alarm during his 1987-98 tenure as national vocation director of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). “I was already warning the bishops that there were obvious signs of a decline in vocations, and how many years is that already?” he said. While the CBCP said it maintains no formal database tracking enrolment numbers, the Philippine Church marked its first-ever National Vocation Awareness Month in November in a bid to “address the critical need for more priests within the nation”. – ‘Broken trust’ – For Father Jerome Secillano, spokesperson for the CBCP, said the reason for that need is no secret. “Because of the ******* misconduct that happened in the Church,” he said of the global abuse scandal that erupted in the early 2000s. “That was when people entering the seminary started to dwindle. The impact of that is still being felt.” And while he believes an outpouring of joy and pride would follow the ascendance of a ********* pope, he questions if it would be enough. “I don’t know if a ********* pope will immediately restore that broken trust,” he said. Others who spoke to AFP said the sex abuse scandal could not be solely blamed for dwindling seminary enrollments, pointing to cultural changes that had made the country’s youth harder to reach. “It’s also because young people are so exposed to the secular world, with travel, with the internet and with social media,” said Reyes. – ‘Plain *********’ – Seminarian Neil Pena, 27, told AFP he believed the potential for a ********* pope to galvanise his countrymen’s faith was undeniable. “It’s different when the pope speaks your language,” Pena said. “A pope speaking *********, plain *********, talking to you like he’s talking to you directly… it will be an inspiration.” Reyes agreed a shared heritage would be meaningful in a “personality-oriented” country. “If there’s someone famous, we gravitate towards the person and his actions, way of life,” Reyes said. “There might be many who will be interested in (becoming a) priest.” Rabena, the seminary chancellor, pointed to his own decision to join the clergy, saying it had been “ignited” by the 2015 visit of Pope Francis to the country following the deadliest storm in its history. Arvin Eballo, a theology professor at the University of Santo Tomas, said there was a time when when almost every family aspired to have a son as a priest. “They believed it was a blessing of God,” he said. pam-cwl/dhw Source link #********* #pope #revive #priestly #vocations #Catholic #bastion Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  5. Archaeologists Were Searching For a Lost Sanctuary—and Re-Discovered a Treasure Trove of Ancient Statues Archaeologists Were Searching For a Lost Sanctuary—and Re-Discovered a Treasure Trove of Ancient Statues After its original discovery in 1885, an ancient statue sanctuary in Cyprus was subsequently covered in sand and lost to time yet again. However, a recent archaeological effort rediscovered the sanctuary, and uncovered historical finds from the seventh century B.C. Statue fragments found buried in the sand can now complete statues on display in museums in Cyprus and Canada. A team of ******* archaeologists recently uncovered an ancient statue sanctuary in Cyprus dedicated to Apollo. Known as Frangissa (due to its location in the remote Frangissa Valley), the site was originally discovered in 1885 but was subsequently covered in sand and lost once again. The archaeologists on this team not only rediscovered the Frangissa site, but excavated it, exposing the walls of the dedication courtyard and over 100 statue bases. The site features hundreds of statutes—some shockingly large—and the remnants of some of those have been found for the first time, according to a translated statement from the Cyprus Department of Antiquities and the Deputy Ministry of Culture. The team also recovered statue fragments not cataloged in the 1880s, some of which will help complete partial statues taken from the site and displayed in the Cyprus Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, restoring those statues to their original design. Additionally, the team found entirely new types of statutes previously unknown to have existed in Frangissa. “The discovery of clearly larger-than-life feet, for example, means that the existence of colossal male limestone figures from archaic times can now be proven,” according to the statement. “Such larger-than-life figures were previously only known here in Frangissa made from terracotta, including the famous ‘Colossus of Tamassos’ in the Cyprus Museum exhibition.” The site also contained marbled glass beads and Egyptian amulets made of faience—materials that show cultural exchanges. “A preliminary evaluation of the finds showed that the area had been in use since the Iron Age and was used throughout the archaic, the classics, and Hellenism,” according to a statement from the University of Frankfurt. The inscriptions on the bases of two statues help tell that story. One features local Cypro-Syllabic characters, while the other refers to the Ptolemies—the Hellenistic rulers of Egypt who also controlled Cyprus at one time—in Greek. The inscriptions show that the sanctuary was not only popular during the seventh and sixth centuries B.C., but through the end of the royal *******. “In fact,” the Cyprus statement said, “the place of worship even underwent an explicit expansion phase during this time, which can be seen in the architecture.” During the expansion, a peristyle courtyard—likely used for banquets—was built next to the votive offering room, highlighting how the site evolved to serve as both a religious and social center. Other marquis finds in the sanctuary include small chariots, horsemen, and warrior figures made of terracotta, as well as large-format hollow terracottas that could be as big as life-size. Limestone statues also feature horses and riders on horses. While the larger pieces were captured by ******* researcher Max Ohnefalsch-Richter in 1885—and have ended up in museums in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, and possibly even Russia—numerous fragments of limestone figures and large-format terracottas were left behind. “It was a surprising realization that not only the pedestals for votive statues were found in the 19th-century backfill, but also vast quantities of statue fragments themselves,” according to the Cyprus statement. “Apparently, in 1885, in the rush to find impressive discoveries, they were not recognized as artifacts.” Luckily, today, we see them for the treasures they are. Apple says Epic Games contempt ruling could cost ‘substantial sums’ Apple says Epic Games contempt ruling could cost ‘substantial sums’ An Apple store in Walnut Creek, California, U.S., on April 30, 2025. Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images Apple is asking a court to pause a recent decision in its case against Epic Games and allow the iPhone maker to once again charge a commission on in-app transactions that link out for payment. Last month, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland found that Apple had violated her original court order from the Epic trial, originally decided in 2021, that forced Apple to make limited changes to its linking out policy under California law. Judge Rogers’ new ruling is more expansive, ordering Apple to immediately stop imposing its commissions on purchases made for iPhone apps through web links inside its apps, among other changes. Apple is now looking to get a stay on that order, as well as another one from the case that prevents it from restricting app developers from choosing the language or placement of those links, until the entire decision can be appealed. Apple says that required changes in their current form will cost the company “substantial sums.” “This is the latest chapter in Epic’s largely unsuccessful effort to use competition law to change how Apple runs the App Store,” Apple said in the emergency motion for a stay. The motion cites a previous order in the case that found that new linking policies would cost Apple “hundreds of millions to billions” of dollars annually. If Apple succeeds, it will allow the company to roll back changes that have already started to shift the economics of app development. Developers including Amazon and Spotify have been able to update their apps to avoid Apple’s commissions and direct customers to their own website for payment. Prior to the ruling, Amazon’s Kindle app told users they could not purchase a book in the iPhone app. After a recent update, the app now shows an orange “Get Book” button that links to Amazon’s website. Epic also plans to introduce new software to allow app and game developers to easily link to their websites to take payments. “This forces Apple to compete,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said shortly after last month’s decision. “This is what we wanted all along.” Apple said in the filing that “non-party developers are already seizing upon the Order to reduce consumer choice (and damage Apple’s business) by, among other things, impeding the use of” in-app purchases. Rogers made a criminal referral in the case, saying that Apple misled the court and that a company vice president “outright lied” about when and why Apple decided to charge 27% for external payments. The real decision, the judge said, took place in meetings involving Apple CEO Tim Cook. Wednesday’s filing from Apple doesn’t address Rogers’ accusations that the company misled the judge, but it does argue that the ruling was punitive. Apple’s lawyers also claimed that civil contempt sanctions can only coerce compliance with an existing order, not punish non-compliance. Apple said earlier this week in a court filing it would appeal the contempt ruling. “We’ve complied with the court’s order and we’re going to appeal,” Cook told investors on the company’s quarterly earnings call last week. 10. Tyreek Hill’s Estranged Wife Keeta Reveals NFL Star’s Alleged Number of Kids in Divorce War Tyreek Hill’s Estranged Wife Keeta Reveals NFL Star’s Alleged Number of Kids in Divorce War Tyreek Hill’s estranged wife, Keeta Hill, revealed the alleged number of kids the NFL star has as she pleaded for temporary exclusive use of the home amid their divorce, In Touch can exclusively report. According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Keeta argued Tyreek’s behavior warranted her request being granted. Advertisement In her filing, Keeta said she filed for divorce on April 8, “following an altercation on April 7” at the parties’ home “during which [Tyreek] conducted himself in a threatening, violent, abusive and unsafe manner toward” toward “[Keeta], toward her mother and toward the parties’ four-and-one-half-month-old daughter.” In her filing, she said she was not placing the facts of the incident in the court file “out of concern for the privacy of the family.” Keeta claimed that on April 17, after having spent the two previous nights out of the home, Tyreek, 31, returned to the home and announced he was taking the baby, despite her objections. “The husband has never taken care of the baby, never bathed her, never changed a diaper, never dressed her and never put her to bed. He has never been along with the baby,” Keeta’s filing read. “[Tyreek] has no sincere desire to spend time with the baby, to assume parental responsibilities for the baby or to be personally involved with the baby.” Advertisement “[Tyreek’s] track record for involvement as a parent is well-established as he has many, many other children,” Keeta’s lawyer said. GettyImages-2198335330 Tyreek Hill Divorce Drama “[Tyreek] is unable to place the needs of the child over this needs; his impulsive, unpredictable behavior and his plan to delegate the child’s care to others is not in the best interests of and is harmful to the children,” the motion added. Keeta claimed Tyreek listed the home they share for ***** after the altercation, took her car and told her to get out. Her motion read, “[Tyreek] has leased a new luxury apartment for himself; however, he refuses to allow [Keeta] to have exclusive use and possession of the marital home pendente lite because he wants to come and go and send his family members to the home whenever he pleases, regardless of [Keeta’s] and the child’s schedule. This is an additional element of coercive control that [Tyreek] is trying to exert over [Keeta].” Advertisement Keeta said 50/50 custody would not be appropriate until Tyreek “learns to respect boundaries and to place the baby’s needs over his own impulses and desires.” She asked the court to award her exclusive use of the $4.8 million Miami condo, custody of the child and for Tyreek to have supervised visitation. In a separate motion, Keeta demanded Tyreek be ordered to pay her attorney fees to level the playing field. She argued Tyreek was a professional athlete with an “army of professionals (lawyers, bankers, advisors etc) plus practically unlimited financial resources to pay them, against a financial dependent wife with a child under the age of six months.” Advertisement Keeta said she liquidated a significant portion of her savings to hire a divorce lawyer. However, she said the retainer will soon be exhausted and she will need more funds. “Through counsel, [Keeta] proceeded to make reasonable requests of [Tyreek], asking for temporary exclusive use and possession of the parties’ condominium and asking him to maintain the financial status quo so that she and the parties’ baby daughter would not be vulnerable”, her motion stated. GettyImages-2198761895 Tyreek Hill Divorce Drama “[Keeta’s] requests were denied, requiring [Keeta] to expend substantial attorneys’ time and labor to prepare and file motions and seek court hearings which will be costly to litigate. In the meantime, she and the child remain vulnerable and without financial resources.” Advertisement Keeta claimed Tyreek had no problem paying around $90,000 for a private jet and $30,000 for a rental home when the family went to Aspen for three days less than a month ago. “[Tyreek’s] unreasonableness foreshadows that a costly court battle will be necessary,” Keeta’s lawyer noted. In addition, Keeta’s lawyer alleged, “It has become clear that [Tyreek] has an elaborate corporate structure in place to divert his marital income from being transparent and to hide martial assets from [Keeta] and from this court.” Keeta argued she would need to hire a forensic accountant to investigate. Keeta also claimed that Tyreek has “ten other children, some of whom he does not even spend time with.” The NFL star has been rumored to have had five children in the past year. Advertisement Earlier this year, Daily Mail reported Tyreek was rumored to have around seven children. In her motion, Keeta demanded the court award her a substantial award of attorney fees to allow her to continue fighting Tyreek in court. As In Touch first reported, Keeta also demanded the court restore access to debit cards she alleged Tyreek cut off after their split. Tyreek’s lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, previously In Touch, “Mr. Hill denies the allegations in the recently filed pleadings; they are false and disparaging. Allegations such as this should be taken with caution as they strategically lodged to gain advantages in child support and time sharing. We adamantly deny these allegations and look forward to proving them to be false in court.” Tyreek’s team, the Miami Dolphins, released a statement about the incident last month at his home involving police. Advertisement “On Monday, we were informed that the police were called to Tyreek Hill’s home, and after conversations with Tyreek and members of his family, the police departed the residence without further incident and the case was closed,” a rep for the team said. “We have since been in communication with Tyreek and the NFL and will have no further comment on the matter.” As In Touch previously reported, back in early 2024, Tyreek filed for divorce from Keeta but then withdrew the petition. He blamed a member of his team for the filing, who he said had been fired. Six people were killed and 10 others were injured in the attack at Westfield Bondi Junction on April 13, 2024. Dawn Singleton, Yixuan Cheng, Faraz Ahmed Tahir, Ashlee Good, ***** Young and Pikria Darchia died in the incident. Cauchi, 40, had gone on a rampage through the palatial shopping centre with a WWII knife purchased at a camping store before being gunned down by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott. A five-week coronial inquest into the deadly stabbing began last Monday, with the first week revealing never-before-heard details about the incident. Scentre Group operate a string of Westfields across Australia including Bondi Junction. The nature, timing, and adequacy of the response by Scentre Group and its subcontractors Glad Group and Falkon Security will also be examined in the inquest. A security guard and security supervisor working at the centre at the time told the court he wished things had been done differently as the fatal rampage unfolded. “I wish I …did more to help those people,” he said. The man paid credit to his team and said only two members had been able to return to full-time work, saying what they had all gone through weighed heavily on his mind. Camera IconBondi killer Joel Cauchi was shot dead by Inspector Amy Scott. Supplied. Credit: Supplied “What we went through on that day was truly traumatic, and not everyone understands the fear and chaos we went through,” he told the court. He thanked team members for doing CPR and getting people to safety as best they could. “I know that some of you are still carrying the weight of that day, and life hasn’t been the same since,” he said. “I see your strength, I recognise your pain, and I’m truly grateful to every single one of you — thank you for being there with me.” Newly released CCTV has captured the moment killer Joel Cauchi was pulled over for erratic driving in 2021, years before the fatal attack at Westfield Bondi Junction. The court was earlier told there were two staff members in the CCTV control room on level 4 on the afternoon of the attack, however, one had left about 3pm with his supervisor to undertake training on level 13 while the other left at 3.32pm to go to the bathroom. This meant there was “no active CCTV monitoring in place” for the minute and forty seconds she was outside the room, and exactly 40 seconds later Cauchi attacked Ms Singleton, counsel assisting the coroner Peggy Dwyer SC earlier told the court. By the time the woman re-entered the control room Cauchi had attacked eight people, three of whom later died. The second security employee re-entered the CCTV control room by 3.36pm, however, all 16 people had been stabbed by then. Ms Dwyer said it appeared the CCTV room being vacant at that time impeded Scentre Group’s response. “Security staff were effectively behind the 8-ball – that is, they were then playing catch-up, catch up to understand what was unfolding,” Ms Dwyer said. An evacuation alert was used rather than one that warned of an AAO, and Ms Dwyer said it appeared appropriately warning customers and staff “did not occur promptly” or “in the way it should’ve done” on the day. mental health support Source link #Westfield #Bondi #Junction #attack #security #guard #speaks #inquest Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  13. Scientists Just Uncovered A New Dementia Warning Sign—And It’s More Common Than You Think Scientists Just Uncovered A New Dementia Warning Sign—And It’s More Common Than You Think If you’ve ever felt like you’re so sleepy you’re about to take a snooze standing up (or sitting at your desk around the 3 pm slump), you’re not alone. It’s normal to feel wiped out sometimes, especially when your life is really busy or have let your sleep hygiene slide. But feeling consistently tired can be a sign that something is seriously off with your health. In fact, scientists have discovered that in older adults, this type of excessive sleepiness could be a warning sign for dementia, according to new research. Of course, it’s important to stress that it’s normal to feel tired on some level as you get older, which makes these findings a little complicated. (TLDR: Don’t panic if your grandma likes her afternoon naps—she has earned them! And getting older causes a lot of wear and tear on the body that requires rest.) Here’s what the study found, plus what’s behind this link. Meet the expert: Clifford Segil, DO, a neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. What did the study find? The study, which was published in the journal Neurology, used sleep trackers to watch the sleep patterns (including naps) of 733 women in their 80s. During the roughly five-year follow-up *******, 164 of the women developed mild cognitive impairment, which is a noticeable change in memory and thinking skills, and 93 were diagnosed with dementia. The researchers discovered that people who had large jumps in sleepiness over time, including excessive napping, had double the risk of developing dementia. As a result, the researchers concluded that changes in sleep patterns may be an “early marker” or risk factor for dementia in older women. Why is sleepiness linked with dementia? It’s not entirely clear. “If you ask two different neurologists, you may get two different answers as we still don’t know the reason we sleep,” says Clifford Segil, DO, a neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. However, Dr. Segil points out that sleep is linked to memory consolidation (where short-term memories become long-term memories) and good health overall. “Getting a good night’s sleep is more important for octogenarians—people in their 80s—than a good daytime nap,” he says. Dr. Segil notes that poor sleep is linked to trouble consolidating memories in younger people, and that probably gets worse with age. “Memory retrieval is likely affected by poor sleep in elderly patients,” he says. So, if someone is not sleeping well, it could impact their memory, especially if this is a consistent issue. Could it be a sign of something else? Yup, feeling consistently tired can be linked with a range of health issues. “Daytime sleepiness is most often associated with a condition called obstructive sleep apnea, whose main symptoms is daytime sleepiness or non-restorative sleep,” Dr. Segil says. But narcolepsy, anemia, depression, and certain vitamin deficiencies can also cause you to feel tired during the day, making this an important thing to get checked out. What are some other common dementia signs and symptoms? 18. Supercomputer Names Exact Year Life on Earth Will End Supercomputer Names Exact Year Life on Earth Will End Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways It might sound like something out of an apocalyptic movie, but a supercomputer has predicted the end of the world. But don’t worry too much because it’s not supposed to happen soon. According to an April 2025 article in LaGrada, a group of scientists used a supercomputer to “determine that survival on planet Earth will be impossible in about 1 billion years, when conditions become too extreme for life as we know it.” On May 6, 2025, BGR reported that scientists with NASA and Japan’s Toho University used the computer to determine “when all life will end” on Earth. They determined that the sun will end life on Earth around the year 1,000,002,021 because it is expanding, BGR reported. According to BGR, the researchers found that the sun will grow hotter, with “its output will continue to increase, gradually heating the planet beyond the threshold of life.” Scientists have studied Earth’s eventual demise for years. Research published in Nature Geoscience by Kazumi Ozaki and Christopher T. Reinhard in 2021 explained Earth eventually won’t have enough oxygen in its environment to sustain life. “Earth’s modern atmosphere is highly oxygenated and is a remotely detectable signal of its surface biosphere,” those researchers wrote. “However, the lifespan of oxygen-based biosignatures in Earth’s atmosphere remains uncertain, particularly for the distant future. Here we use a combined biogeochemistry and climate model to examine the likely timescale of oxygen-rich atmospheric conditions on Earth.” The researchers noted that having enough oxygen in the atmosphere is not a “permanent” state for a planet, so their findings have “important implications for the search forlife on Earth-like planets beyond our Solar System (for example, habitable planets with abundant liquid water at the surface, exposed silicate crust and a biosphere with oxygenic photosynthesis).” Related: NASA captures images of illuminated moon passing Earth Source link #Supercomputer #Names #Exact #Year #Life #Earth Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  21. Will AI Really Be the Demise of Google Search? Will AI Really Be the Demise of Google Search? Gabby Jones / Bloomberg via Getty Images Questions about Google’s search dominance have been buzzing since ChatGPT exploded onto the scene in 2022. Alphabet stock tumbled on Wednesday after an Apple executive said the company had considered adding AI chatbots from companies like OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic to its devices, a move that could erode Google’s share of the online search market. After Alphabet’s quarterly earnings report last month, Wall Street analysts were generally optimistic about the steps Google had taken to monetize AI within its search engine. Ads on Google Search and related platforms accounted for more than half of Alphabet’s total revenue last quarter. Alphabet (GOOG)(GOOGL) stock sank on Wednesday after comments from an Apple (AAPL) executive stoked concerns that artificial intelligence is chipping away at Google’s bread-and-butter online search business. Apple senior vice president of services Eddy Cue reportedly said search volume in Apple’s Safari browser, in which Google is the default search engine, declined for the first time ever in April, which he attributed to the increasing popularity of AI alternatives. According to Cue, Apple is considering adding AI-enabled search services like those from OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic to its devices at some point in the future. Shares of Alphabet tumbled more than 7% on Wednesday to lead S&P 500 decliners. Questions about Google’s search dominance have been buzzing about Wall Street ever since 2022 when OpenAI’s ChatGPT exploded onto the scene. Analysts immediately began speculating that AI chatbots would supplant search engines as internet users’ preferred source of information and analysis. For some market watchers, Cue’s comments were further proof of this trend. “Search is shifting away from the traditional blue-link results page that we’ve loved for the past 25 years, to a simplified AI-powered result,” wrote Gene Munster, Managing Partner at Deepwater Asset Management, in a post to X. He says the change poses two problems for Google: “First, the monetization model of sponsored ads needs to be overhauled. Second, Google Search has new competitors, including OpenAI, Grok, Perplexity, etc.” Wall Street analysts, though, were generally encouraged by what they saw in Alphabet’s first-quarter earnings last month. “We continue to believe Google has data and distribution advantages and has closed the (large language model) performance gap,” Bank of America analysts wrote of the company’s efforts to fend off AI-first competition. “While still early days, we are excited about AI Mode which brings Gemini directly into search and adds advanced reasoning multi-modal capabilities,” said JPMorgan analysts, referring to an experimental search feature that, according to executives, could double the time users spend on Google. Story Continues Alphabet has a big head start on its AI-first competitors. Google’s share of global search traffic is estimated to be about 90%. The next-largest search engine, Bing, is estimated to receive just 4% of all search queries. The threat of AI companies encroaching on its search traffic is acute for Alphabet. Ads displayed on Google’s search engine and related properties like Gmail, Google Maps and Google Play, accounted for 56% of Alphabet’s total revenue in the first quarter. Google has made it a priority to keep its advantage by integrating AI into its search engine. The company has rolled out AI Overviews, which respond to queries from more than 1.5 billion users in 140 countries a month, said executives on Alphabet’s earnings call last month. Executives say AI summaries are monetized at approximately the same rate as traditional search. One very serious risk to Google’s search dominance: antitrust enforcement. Last August, a federal judge agreed with Justice Department prosecutors that Google operated an ******** monopoly in the online search market. Cue’s comments on Wednesday came as part of testimony in proceedings meant to find a remedy to that monopoly. 23. iPhone maker Foxconn announces plan to build Mitsubishi Motor EVs iPhone maker Foxconn announces plan to build Mitsubishi Motor EVs Foxconn, the maker of Apple’s iPhones, has announced plans to produce electric vehicles (EV) for Japanese car giant Mitsubishi Motors. Under the agreement in principle, a Foxconn joint venture will design and build cars in Taiwan for Mitsubishi. The companies say they expect the new model to be available by the end of next year, under what would be Foxconn’s first major contract in the booming and highly competitive EV industry. Japanese car makers like Mitsubishi have faced growing competition from mainland ******** rivals, particularly in markets in South East Asia, South America and Europe. The companies said the cars will be built by Foxtron – Foxconn’s EV joint venture with Taiwanese car maker, Yulon Motor. “Foxtron will provide design and manufacturing management services and this model is expected to enter the Australia and New Zealand markets in the second half of 2026,” they added. At this stage, the agreement is a so-called memorandum of understanding – a non-binding deal between the two companies. The companies have said they “will proceed with discussions towards a definitive agreement.” Foxconn is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and counts major technology companies such has Apple among its customers. It previously said it would consider buying a stake in Japan’s Nissan Motor for “co-operation” as it looked to get into the motor industry. Mitsubishi Motors is a junior partner in an alliance between Nissan and French car maker Renault. The moves come as China’s car industry has expanded rapidly in recent years and the world’s second largest economy has emerged as a leader in the growing EV market. Established car makers around the world have struggled to compete as major ******** players like BYD continue to win new customers.
