A 22-year-old Polish man has been arrested in connection with the attack which the university has called a “huge tragedy”. Both victims worked at the university. In a statement, the university said the woman killed had been a member of staff, and the man injured worked in security. A motive is not yet known for the attack. Police said the attacker entered the college campus at 18:40 local time (16:40GMT). From there he entered a college auditorium, according to a spokesperson for the district prosecutor. What’s happening? Updates from the World Health Organization pointed toward a recent surge in dengue cases in the Western Pacific, as of early April. Dengue fever, a sometimes-lethal virus carried by mosquitoes, is on the rise in a variety of countries, including Mexico, Canada, the United States, and much of the Caribbean, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, according to Travel and Tour World. The CDC has recommended wariness for all tourists in at-risk areas, and while travel remains officially unrestricted, the increase in dengue cases could take its toll on the tourism industry. In Fiji, the government has identified several outbreaks in the Western and Central Divisions, some of which have proven deadly. The Central Division alone has recorded over 1,000 dengue cases between January and late March, wrote the Fiji Government, and the latest March uptick “is above the expected [dengue] levels for the same ******* last year.” “About half the world’s population is now at risk for dengue with an expected 100-400 million infections occurring each year,” the WHO added. Why is dengue fever important? Dengue can lead to flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pains, and nausea, and can prove fatal in severe cases. Researchers are continuing to explore the link between the changing climate and dengue. The New York Times reported the development after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday night stateside that there will be a briefing about a trade deal next day, without revealing any details. CNBC did not receive a response from the White House and the British Embassy in Washington seeking comments on the news. It was uncertain if both sides will sign a finalized deal or a framework for an agreement that they would continue negotiating in the coming months, NYT said. Britain, which runs a trade deficit with the U.S., was spared the higher “reciprocal” tariffs when Trump announced his “Liberation Day” duties, although it was still hit with the baseline 10% levy. On April 15, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said that the U.K. has a “good chance” of securing a trade deal with America. “I think there’s a good chance that, yes, we’ll come to a great agreement that’s in the best interest of both countries,” he added. Archaeologists Found 300 Ancient Treasures on the Hilltop of a Volcano Archaeologists Found 300 Ancient Treasures on the Hilltop of a Volcano Archeologists have discovered at least six hoards of ancient artifacts on top of a volcanic hilltop. Finds at the site include spearheads, tusks of domestic boars, and objects associated with bronze working, all dating back between the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The area seems to be rich with finds, as 19th-century local farmers also (accidentally) unearthed their fair share of treasures. Whether people buried their wealth as ritual offerings to the gods or to hide it from greedy leaders, the ancient hoards they left behind are extremely valuable to modern-day scientists. Using metal detectors and LiDAR surveys, one archaeological team recently found over 300 artifacts from at least six different hoards in Hungary, including weapons, amber beads, and tusks of domestic boars. Researchers published their findings in the journal Antiquity. The excavations took place at Somló—a wine region in western Hungary located mostly on the slopes of an extinct volcano—and were part of a larger research project by the National Institute of Archaeology of the Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre. Researchers determined that the hoards date back to between the Late Bronze Age (1450–800 B.C.) and Early Iron Age (800–450 B.C.). The transition between these periods is marked by the fall of several prominent Bronze Age civilizations and, as the name suggests, a shift to iron and steel tools. One notable find at the site is an elaborate Alpine-style spearhead, but archeologists also discovered fabric and leather remains buried in the area, along with countless other objects associated with bronze working. Though the study is impressive, it’s far from the first time relics have been discovered in the area. Modern-day Somló is known for its wine production, and in the 19th century, local farmers began accidentally unearthing artifacts on the hilltop. Unfortunately—as Bence Soós, first author of the study, told Live Science—there was no formal documentation tracking where the farmers found the hoards. However, researchers do know that the farmers discovered artifacts like jewelry, weapons, and bronze vessels. According to the paper, the “ix new hoards present the unparalleled opportunity to study hoarding traditions and depositional practices, and to evaluate the changing roles and functions of the hilltop site.” Researchers concluded that the hoarding practices in the area were “intentional and complex,” and the evidence from the new hoards will be combined with older discoveries to provide a more thorough understanding of the region. In the future, the team seeks to date the hoards and the inhabitants that buried them more precisely. According to the paper, one of the six hoards—known as “Hoard V”—will be particularly useful in this effort. “Hoard V is probably the most recent of the Late Bronze Age depositions so far identified on the hill,” the paper reads. Courtesy of Ernestine Siu As someone who chats with startup founders for a living, I’ve always admired the “builders.” I have a lot of respect for their technical ability to dream up an idea and code it into existence, but it’s not something I could ever do. Even the thought of coding gives me painful flashbacks to my college statistics course, in which we learned the programming language “R,” and let’s just say I did not find it enjoyable. So when I came across the term “vibe coding,” my immediate thought was, “great, more tech bro lingo.” But after going down a rabbit hole, I discovered something that really resonated with me. The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former head of artificial intelligence at Tesla, who posted on X in February, “There’s a new kind of coding I call ‘vibe coding’, where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists.” “I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste stuff, and it mostly works,” he wrote. Simply put, vibe coding is coding with the help of artificial intelligence. Today, AI-powered code generation tools like Replit and Cursor are making it possible even for non-technical people and those without experience with software engineering to create functional apps or websites. For people who are not technical today … I think that AI is just the biggest unlock. So we’re going to have many more people who are going to be able to build apps. Last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that as much as 30% of the company’s code is now written by artificial intelligence. I learned how to ‘vibe code’ in 2 days One fine morning in April, I discovered a two-day “vibe coding” boot camp in my area which advertised that class takers could “go from zero to one, creating functional apps in just 48 hours.” That was my chance to get on the other side and see what the hype is all about. The class, called “Code with AI,” took place in person in an office-turned-classroom over a single weekend. We were simply asked to bring our laptops and a project idea. I showed up about half an hour early on Saturday morning to get myself set up, which involved three simple steps: Download and sign up for the free version of CursorDownload NodeJSSign up for the free version of Vercel’s v0 The boot camp, which costs $300 Singapore dollars (about $233), is run by Sherry Jiang, co-founder and CEO of fintech company Peek, and Agrim Singh, co-founder and CTO of AI-powered hardware design assistant Niyam AI. Both Jiang and Singh say that their own startups were largely built using the same AI tools and methods that they taught through the class. Just being able to write code is, I think, no longer going to be a huge differentiation in this current day and age. The classes on both days began with a quick slideshow on what we’d be working on that day. On Saturday, we focused on narrowing down a project idea into a clearly defined product, then prototyping it. On Sunday, I worked on actually building out our product and integrating AI into them. I used Gemini 2.5 Pro, a large language model, to help clarify and narrow down my project idea into a clean product requirements document. I decided to create a negotiation training tool. From there, I used v0 to prototype and develop the user interface of the tool. Then, I used Cursor to build out my product and integrate AI into it. All that may sound complicated or overwhelming to the unfamiliar, but the process was quite feasible in practice. Surprisingly, the most difficult part for me was picking an idea. I bounced between different options, ranging from an instant paperwork translator to a Tinder-for-dogs (to help match dogs for playdates). Ultimately, I settled on a web-based AI-powered negotiation trainer that helps teach users how to negotiate in different settings and situations, and with different personalities through written and spoken drills — which I successfully built out by the end of the weekend. In hindsight, I realize I should have gone with the second option: Tinder-for-dogs. Major takeaways I was amazed to find that the process did not involve coding at all. I learned that vibe coding is more about patience and prompt engineering — or knowing how to prompt or instruct the AI tools — than it is about coding. Much of the class was about learning how to write out our prompts for the AI tools. “AI is the dumbest smart thing out there … you have to be super specific,” Singh said to a class of about 30. As long as you can read, write and follow instructions, you can probably vibe code, I learned. “Just being able to write code is, I think, no longer going to be a huge differentiation in this current day and age. But if you are a really good software engineer, your productivity is just going to 10x,” said Jiang. As a result, startups may not need to raise as much money as hiring costs may also decrease, she added. “For people who are not technical today … I think that AI is just the biggest unlock. So we’re going to have many more people who are going to be able to build apps,” she said. Aspiring entrepreneurs who have felt held back by their lack of technical knowledge can now at least get a boost from AI. I see a ton of these people like making like, $10,000 to $20,000 a month off of a app they vibe coded, when they didn’t know how code months ago. Sherry Jiang Co-founder and CEO, Peek AI will be a great “equalizer” that will allow many more people to create companies, especially if they have an expertise in a specific area, Jiang added. For example, teachers can create an app for students, and diving instructors can create a global diving community app. “I see a ton of these people making like, $10,000 to $20,000 a month off of an app they vibe coded, when they didn’t know how to code months ago,” said Jiang. While competition may also increase as more people can create startups today, Jiang predicts that it’ll also be an opportunity to create niche apps that are hyper-focused on specific users. But a question remains: do you need to know how to code in order to launch a solid product to the market today? Jiang says “it depends what you build.” It’s important to acknowledge the limitations of vibe coding, which is best suited to very simple, lightweight, straightforward consumer apps — not anything very technical that will require “heavy enterprise security” or anything of the like, Jiang noted. According to a new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, adding pecans in place of other commonly eaten snacks can help reduce cholesterol numbers. In the study, researchers tracked 138 adults who had at least one risk factor for poor metabolic health but did not have cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes. The participants were split into two groups: a control group which ate a normal diet, and the test group which replaced their regular snacks with two ounces of raw, unsalted pecans. Each day, participants completed questionnaires and had regular check-ins throughout the study. At the end, they returned for follow-up assessments, including blood pressure readings, lab tests, weigh-ins, and other health screenings. Related: Feeling Down? New Research Suggests This Gut-Friendly Supplement Could Help At the end of the study, researchers found that compared to those who maintained their usual diet, participants who ate pecans had lower total cholesterol, LDL (or “bad”) cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. In addition, their overall diet quality improved by 9.4 points according to the Healthy Eating Index. Although there was a slight tendency toward weight gain in the pecan group, the average 1.5-pound increase wasn’t considered statistically significant. Considering their rich supply of heart-healthy fats and dietary fiber, it’s no surprise that regular pecan consumption led to significant benefits. Former research has shown that fiber, in particular, helps reduce the amount of **** absorbed into the bloodstream, which can naturally lead to lower cholesterol levels. In addition to eating a healthy diet, research also shows that regular strength training and aerobic exercise, just 150 minutes a week, can help to reduce cholesterol levels. Before you swap your cholesterol-lowering medication for a handful of pecans, keep in mind that none of the participants in the study had been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was meeting last week with representatives from a teachers union in his home state when things quickly devolved. Before long, Fetterman began repeating himself, shouting and questioning why “everybody is mad at me,” “why does everyone hate me, what did I ever do” and slamming his hands on a desk, according to one person who was briefed on what occurred. As the meeting deteriorated, a staff member moved to end it and ushered the visitors into the hallway, where she broke down crying. The staffer was comforted by the teachers who were themselves rattled by Fetterman’s behavior, according to a second person who was briefed separately on the meeting. The interaction at Fetterman’s Washington office, described to The Associated Press by the two people who spoke about it on the condition of anonymity, came the day before New York Magazine published a story in which former staff and political advisers to Fetterman aired concerns about the senator’s mental health. That story included a 2024 letter, also obtained by the AP, in which Fetterman’s one-time chief of staff Adam Jentleson told a neuropsychiatrist who had treated Fetterman for depression that the senator appeared to be off his recovery plan and was exhibiting alarming behavior, including a tendency toward “long, rambling, repetitive and self-centered monologues.” Asked about the meeting with teachers union representatives, Fetterman said in a statement through his office that they “had a spirited conversation about our collective frustration with the Trump administration’s cuts to our education system.” He also said he “will always support our teachers, and I will always reject anyone’s attempt to turn Pennsylvania’s public schools into a voucher program.” Fetterman earlier this week brushed off the New York Magazine story as a “one-source hit piece and some anonymous sources, so there’s nothing new.” Asked by a reporter in a Senate corridor what he would say to people who are concerned about him, Fetterman said: “They’re not. They’re actually not concerned. It’s a hit piece. There’s no news.” Reached by telephone, Aaron Chapin, the president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association who was in the meeting with Fetterman, said he didn’t want to discuss what was a private conversation. Surviving a stroke, battling depression The teachers union encounter adds to the questions being raised about Fetterman’s mental health and behavior barely three years after a he survived a stroke on the 2022 campaign trail that he said almost killed him. That was followed by a bout with depression that landed him in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for six weeks, barely a month after he was sworn into the Senate. The scrutiny also comes a time when Fetterman, now serving third year of his term, is being criticized by many rank-and-file Democrats in his home state for being willing to cooperate with President Donald Trump, amid Democrats’ growing alarm over Trump’s actions and agenda. Fetterman — who has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, in which the heart muscle becomes weakened and enlarged, and auditory processing disorder, a complication from the stroke — has talked openly about his struggle with depression and urged people to get help. In November, he told podcast host Joe Rogan that he had recovered and fended off thoughts of harming himself. “I was at the point where I was really, you know, in a very dark place. And I stayed in that game and I am staying in front of you right now and having this conversation,” Fetterman said. But some who have worked closely with Fetterman question whether his recovery is complete. In the 2024 letter to Dr. David Williamson, Jentleson warned that Fetterman was not seeing his doctors, had pushed out the people who were supposed to help him stay on his recovery plan and might not be taking his prescribed medications. Jentleson also said Fetterman had been driving recklessly and exhibiting paranoia, isolating him from colleagues. “Overall, over the last nine months or so, John has dismantled the early-warning system we all agreed upon when he was released,” Jentleson wrote. “He has picked fights with each person involved in that system and used those fights as excuses to push them out and cut them off from any knowledge about his health situation.” Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where Williamson works, declined to make him available for an interview, citing privacy and confidentiality laws protecting patient medical information. A lone wolf in the Senate Fetterman has long been a wild card in the political realm, forging a career largely on his own, independently from the Democratic Party. As a small-town mayor in Braddock, the plainspoken Fetterman became a minor celebrity for his bare-knuckled progressive politics, his looks — he’s 6-foot-8 and tattooed with a shaved head — and his unconventional efforts to put the depressed former steel town back on the map. He endorsed the insurgent Democrat Bernie Sanders in 2016’s presidential primary and ran from the left against the party-backed Democrat in 2016’s Senate primary. In 2020, when he was lieutenant governor, he became a top surrogate on cable TV news shows for Joe Biden’s presidential bid and gathered a national political following that made him a strong small-dollar fundraiser. Elected to the Senate in 2022, he has made waves with his casual dress — hoodies and gym shorts — at work and at formal events and his willingness to chastise other Democrats. Fetterman returned to the Senate after his hospitalization in 2023 a much more outgoing lawmaker, frequently joking with his fellow senators and engaging with reporters in the hallways with the assistance of an iPad or iPhone that transcribes conversations in real time. Yet two years later, Fetterman is still something of a loner in the Senate. He has separated himself from many of his fellow Democrats on Israel policy and argued at times that his party needs to work with, not against, Trump. He met with Trump and Trump’s nominees — and voted for some — when other Democrats wouldn’t. He has stood firmly with Democrats in other cases and criticized Trump on some issues, such as trade and food aid. One particularly head-scratching video of Fetterman emerged earlier this year in which he was on a flight to Pittsburgh apparently arguing with a pilot over his seatbelt. Despite fallout with progressives over his staunch support of Israel in its war in Gaza, Fetterman was still an in-demand personality last year to campaign in the battleground state of Pennsylvania for Biden and, after Biden dropped his reelection bid, Vice President Kamala Harris. Since Trump won November’s election — and Pennsylvania — things have changed. Many one-time supporters have turned on Fetterman over his softer approach to Trump and his willingness to criticize fellow Democrats for raising alarm bells. It nevertheless brought Fetterman plaudits. Bill Maher, host of the political talk show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” suggested that Fetterman should run for president in 2028. Conservatives — who had long made Fetterman a target for his progressive politics — have sprung to Fetterman’s defense. Still, Democrats in Pennsylvania say they are hearing from people worried about him. “People are concerned about his health,” said Sharif Street, the state’s Democratic Party chairman. “They want to make sure he’s OK. S&P 500 futures erased earlier losses to be up 0.5 per cent while Nasdaq futures rose 0.7 per cent. The pan-European STOXX 600 index climbed 0.7 per cent and FTSE futures gained 0.5 per cent. Trump said late on Wednesday he would announce details about a major trade deal with an unspecified country at a press conference later in the day. The New York Times reported that the deal was with Britain. The president’s comments came as investors anxiously await planned trade talks between Washington and Beijing on Saturday, which could mark the first step in resolving a potentially damaging trade war between the world’s top two economies. Markets are also keeping their eyes peeled on the Bank of England’s policy meeting later in the day where expectations are for a quarter-point rate cut. Additionally, central banks in Sweden and Norway are due to deliver their latest policy decisions, although no moves are expected. Overnight, in a widely expected decision, the Federal Reserve left policy rate in the 4.25 per cent-4.5 per cent range, but said the risks of higher inflation and unemployment had risen. Chair Jerome Powell said it isn’t clear if the economy will continue its steady pace of growth, or wilt under mounting uncertainty and a possible coming spike in inflation. Markets scaled back the chance of a June rate cut to just 20 per cent, from 30 per cent a day earlier, while a move in July is now priced at 70 per cent, compared with a near-certainty just a week ago. “This suggests little inclination to move until they are confident of the direction the data is heading, meaning rate cuts could be delayed, but risk being sharper when they come,” said James Knightley, chief international economist at ING. Such a scenario likely weighed on the longer-dated Treasury yields, with the benchmark ten-year yields down 7 basis points overnight at 4.275 per cent. Two-year yields held steady at 3.785 per cent. The hawkish Fed also gave the dollar a much needed bounce, although some selling pressure was again evident in morning trade in Asia. The dollar index slipped 0.1 per cent to 99.803, having rebounded 0.3 per cent overnight against its major peers. On Thursday, MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat while Japan’s Nikkei edged up 0.2 per cent. While Trump’s comments underlined the recent mixed signals from Washington on de-escalating the Sino-US trade war, analysts say the Geneva meeting could help ease tensions. “The rest of the week will likely see investors cautiously, if not slightly auspiciously, awaiting trade talks between the US and China,” said Kyle Rodda, a senior analyst at Capital.com. In commodities markets, oil prices bounced after falling more than $US1 ($A1.60) on Wednesday. US crude futures rose 0.5 per cent to $US58.34 ($A90.77) a barrel while Brent was at $US61.34 ($A95.43) per barrel, up 0.4 per cent on the day. In precious metals, gold prices rallied 0.7 per cent to $US3,390 ($A5,274) an ounce amid the uncertainties about Fed policy outlook, but still short of its record high of $US3,500 ($A5,445). However, as technology has advanced faster than expected, being an “AI whisperer” has shifted from a unique job title to a skill needed by everyone to succeed. The tech industry’s “hottest new job” has been extinguished almost as fast as it caught flame. Back in 2023—when ChatGPT exploded onto the global radar—prompt engineering was promised as a new career path for those eager to become master “AI whisperers.” With the potential for a $200,000 salary and no coding required, it by all means sounded like a dream job focused on properly utilizing generative AI to solve business problems. However, despite AI skills being more in demand than ever (and education institutions creating prompt engineering programs), prompt engineer as a job title did not really take off as some people hoped, according to Allison Shrivastava, an economist at Indeed. “Prompt engineering as a skill is still definitely a good thing to have, but it’s not an entire title,” Shrivastava told Fortune. On Indeed, searches for prompt engineering roles peaked in April 2023—and rapid advancements in AI technology are mostly to blame. Just a few years ago, generative AI was hallucination-filled and often struggled to understand user intent, but today, these tools are more human-like than ever and can even prompt questions back to the user if something needs clarification. The whiplash in the skills and job market is just another gut punch to Gen Zers, who have struggled to get their careers off the ground. In today’s rapidly changing world, the skills that are in demand when someone enters college might be completely obsolete by the time they graduate. Prompt engineering’s skill value As employers increasingly demand workers increase their use of AI (and with it, their productivity), prompt engineering has shifted from something exclusive to the tech field to a skill that all workers need to master. In fact, LinkedIn said AI literacy is the No. 1 fastest-growing skill in the U.S., and according to a survey, 99% of HR leaders report having been asked to add more AI skills to job requirements. However, despite this purported demand, the share of job postings is still relatively small, Shrivastava said. Generative-AI terms only appear in three out of every 1,000 job postings on Indeed—though mentions grew 170% last year, according to an Indeed report. To top that off, some two-thirds of jobs on Indeed demand skills that AI can already handle. But despite the ups and downs of the job market, Shrivastava encourages those on the job hunt to be bullish when applying—even if you don’t check all the education or skill qualifications. “Don’t be shied away from applying based on solid requirements,” she said. “You never know.” The prompt-engineering party may have been over before it started Those in the tech space are likely not too surprised by prompt engineering not coming to fruition. In fact, in 2022, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted its demise. “I don’t think we’ll be doing prompt engineering in five years,” Altman said in 2022. “This will be integrated everywhere; just with text, or voice, depending on the context, you will just interface in language and get the computer to do whatever you want it to do.” However, last month Altman told entrepreneur and social media host Varun Mayya that prompt engineering was an example “near and dear to his heart” of an entirely new job that was hard to conceptualize existing decades ago.
