Federal election 2025: Liberals down but not counting themselves out for WA’s new seat of Bullwinkel Federal election 2025: Liberals down but not counting themselves out for WA’s new seat of Bullwinkel Labor has increased its lead in the new WA seat of Bullwinkel to more than 300 votes, but Liberal candidate Matt Moran isn’t publicly conceding defeat yet. On Facebook, he told supporters it is still too close to call though party sources conceded the trend is against him. “While we wait for the final result, I want to express my deep gratitude to my incredible campaign team,” Mr Moran said. “This was a long and dedicated effort, focused on local issues that matter to our community . . . no matter the outcome, I will continue to stand up for you.” Bullwinkel is the only WA seat that remains undecided in the wake of Saturday’s Federal election that cemented Labor and Anthony Albanese’s position in Canberra. Meanwhile, Labor’s Josh Wilson said he was “humbled and grateful” after surviving a well-funded Independent challenge in the seat of Fremantle. He vowed to take up the “great responsibility” with “renewed energy” in the wake of Labor’s sweeping re-election. But Premier Roger Cook on Thursday maintained Woodside’s $30 billion project — already approved by the State Government — should go ahead. “The extension of the North-West Shelf is absolutely essential for making sure that we can continue to bring on, not only current reserves but, future reserves,” he said. “It’s actually a better way for the whole industry to function. We’re very much looking forward to the Commonwealth concluding their consideration of the proposal.” Mr Cook said Labor would “sit down and reflect” on two close calls in Fremantle, in the State and Federal polls. Starmer warns of Second World War parallels with ‘hatred, tyranny and evil’ of Putin’s Ukraine war Starmer warns of Second World War parallels with ‘hatred, tyranny and evil’ of Putin’s Ukraine war Sir Keir Starmer is warning on the 80th anniversary of VE Day of modern parallels with the Second World War as he condemned the “hatred, tyranny and evil” of Vadimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. The Prime Minister paid tribute to the veterans of the Second World War who fought in the European theatre, as the *** marks 80 years since the Allies accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany. As celebrations are taking place across the country, Sir Keir also highlighted that war is raging again in Europe 80 years on. Speaking at the London Defence Conference, he was expected to say: “Britain’s victory was not just a victory for Britain. It was a victory for good against the assembled forces of hatred, tyranny and evil, for the light of our values – in a world that tried to put them out. “Now, as you know, there are people who would happily do likewise today. Our values and security are confronted on a daily basis. We must use this moment to deliver security and renewal for our country.” Joe Biden has criticised Donald Trump’s peace proposals for Ukraine (AP) The comparison between the Second World War and turmoil in the modern world comes just a day after former US president Joe Biden warned about the impact of allowing Putin to keep territory he has captured in Ukraine as part of a peace deal. Mr Biden said his successor Donald Trump’s pressure on Ukraine to give up territory to Russia amounted to “modern-day appeasement”. The charged, historical term refers to a failed effort to stop the Nazis annexing power through a peace agreement in the 1930s. Sir Keir also stressed that the *** had to seize the “dividend” from his plans to raise defence spending. The Prime Minister was also set to announce a £563 million contract for Rolls-Royce for the maintenance of Britain’s fleet of Typhoon fighter jets. Ministers have been keen to stress the boost to jobs and prosperity that plans to increase the ***’s defence spending to 2.5% of economic output by 2027 could provide, as they seek to grow the economy. In Ukraine, Russia has launched a series of recent deadly attacks on Kyiv and other cities, as Putin has rejected Trump’s peace proposals. Ukraine has sent drones to target Moscow ahead of a three-day ceasefire proposed by Putin timed to coincide as Russia celebrates Victory Day over Nazi Germany on May 9. Vladimir Putin welcomed ******** President Xi Jinping to Moscow on Thursday (AP) Putin thanked ******** President Xi Jinping on Thursday for coming to Moscow to take part in ceremonies to mark the 80th anniversary of Russia’s “sacred” victory over the Nazis. In London, British Defence Secretary John Healey said: “This is a day to look back and to celebrate that moment 80 years ago when we secured the peace. “But it is also a call and a challenge to act to try and restore the peace because we face war in Europe again for the first time in 80 years with Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.” He branded Putin as “the problem” to agreeing a 30-day ceasefire, ahead of peace talks, which Ukraine was ready to accept. Nadia Conners Directed Pedro Pascal and Walton Goggins in her First Film, ‘The Uninvited’ Nadia Conners Directed Pedro Pascal and Walton Goggins in her First Film, ‘The Uninvited’ So, she said: “I took sort of a back seat, willingly, because I could. But I didn’t realize what I was really doing.” Conners kept working on her own, turning to trusted collaborators and friends for intellectual stimulation. Matthew Specktor, a writer and longtime friend of Conners, used words like “forceful” to describe her. When they met in the late ’90s, before she was married, Specktor said they would go out after work with their partners and talk about books and movies. “She was an incredibly complete, culturally and cinematically literate person,” he said. “She has a kind of beautiful willfulness,” he added. Family Matters Originally Conners wanted Billy Crudup to play Sammy, but he declined. After finishing the casting process, the pivotal role remained unfilled. Goggins and Conners have been together 21 years. He is often the first reader of her work, she said, and he read the part to help her better hear the lines as she was writing. “I had imagined Sammy a bit softer, but when Walton read it, he played it so sharp and strong,” she said. That energy helped evolve how she had imagined the dynamic of the on-screen marriage. “I certainly wasn’t auditioning for the role when I was reading it with Nadia,” Goggins said. “I just did that because, you know, she’s my best friend and she needed help. My interpretation of it made her laugh — I think my manic side, my insecurity, my anxiety, makes her laugh.” Goggins arranged a break from shooting his series “Fallout” to shoot “The Uninvited.” That was two years before he rocketed to paparazzi fodder with his role as Rick Hatchett in season 3 of “The White Lotus.” Now, Conners jokes, she may not be able to afford him. Wikipedia legally challenges ‘flawed’ online safety rules
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Wikipedia legally challenges ‘flawed’ online safety rules Wikipedia legally challenges ‘flawed’ online safety rules Chris Vallance Senior Technology Reporter Getty Images Wikipedia is taking legal action against new Online Safety Act regulations it says could threaten the safety of its volunteer editors and their ability to keep harmful content off the site. The Wikimedia Foundation – the non-profit which supports the online encyclopaedia – is seeking a judicial review of rules which could mean Wikipedia is subjected to the toughest duties required of websites under the act. Lead counsel Phil Bradley-Schmieg said it was “unfortunate that we must now defend the privacy and safety of Wikipedia’s volunteer editors from flawed legislation”. The government told the BBC it was committed to implementing the act but could not comment on ongoing legal proceedings. It’s thought this is the first judicial review to be brought against the new online safety laws – albeit a narrow part of them – but experts say it may not be the last. “The Online Safety Act is vast in scope and incredibly complex,” Ben Packer, a partner at law firm Linklaters, told the BBC. The law would inevitably have impacts on *** citizens’ freedom of expression and other human rights, so as more of it comes into force “we can expect that more challenges may be forthcoming”, he told the BBC. These will add to the array of challenges the act already faces, from claims it’s burdensome rules are forcing harmless small websites to close – to those who argue the law and its enforcement are too weak and not up to the job. Why is Wikipedia unhappy? The Online Safety Act requires the regulator, Ofcom, to categorise platforms according to their size and their potential to cause users harm. Those designated “Category 1” – the highest level – will face additional duties to keep users safe. In very simple terms, sites are most likely to be classed as Category 1 if they allow millions of *** users to interact and share content with each other, and have systems that recommend content. These rules were originally designed to target the services where *** users were most likely to encounter harmful content – but Wikipedia is concerned they are so vaguely defined there is “a significant risk” it will be included in Category 1. If that happened, the consequences for the army of volunteers who write and edit articles could be serious and would reach beyond the ***, the Foundation argues. It has singled out additional duties which could, in effect, require the site to verify the identities of its volunteers – something it fears could expose them to data breaches, stalking, vexatious lawsuits or even imprisonment by authoritarian regimes. “We would be forced to collect data about our contributors, and that would compromise their privacy and safety, and what that means is that people would feel less safe as contributors”, Rebecca MacKinnon the Wikimedia Foundation’s vice president of global advocacy told the BBC “We’ve seen in other parts of the world, when people do not feel safe contributing to Wikipedia, then they then they shy away from controversial topics that may be challenging to to people who are powerful, and that reduces the quality and the usefulness of the encyclopaedia”. ‘Outlier’ services The Wikimedia Foundation stresses it is not trying to challenge the OSA in general, or the idea that there should be Category 1 services subject to additional duties. Instead, it is challenging parts of the so-called “Categorisation Regulations” that set out how the regulator Ofcom will decide which sites will have to follow the most stringent duties. It argues, as currently defined, they risk not only inappropriately catching sites such as Wikipedia but also missing some platforms which should be abiding by tougher rules. “The Regulations do not just risk overregulating low risk “outlier” services, like Wikipedia,” Phil Bradley-Schmieg wrote in a blog post. “As designed, the regulations will also fail to catch many of the services *** society is actually concerned about, like misogynistic hate websites”. The foundation argues its volunteers already do an effective job of keeping harmful content off the platform. After the 2024 Southport murders, volunteers worked night and day to provide reliable and neutral information Mr Bradley-Schmieg wrote. Ben Packer argues the foundation will have a high bar to cross to convince a court that the Secretary of State acted unlawfully making the regulations. “Typically, it is difficult to succeed in a judicial review challenging regulations,” he told BBC News. “Here, Wikimedia will be challenging regulations set by the Secretary of State on the advice of Ofcom, after they had conducted research and consultation on where those thresholds should be set,” he pointed out. Ofcom has not yet categorised any services, but has requested information from a number of sites – including Wikipedia – and is awaiting responses. In a statement it said: We note the Wikimedia Foundation’s decision to challenge the categorisation regulations set by the Secretary of State under the Online Safety Act.” Source link #Wikipedia #legally #challenges #flawed #online #safety #rules Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
Oracle NetSuite’s Goldberg: autonomous AI next applications phase Oracle NetSuite’s Goldberg: autonomous AI next applications phase Evan Goldberg, executive vice-president of Oracle NetSuite, has a computer science student hinterland in artificial intelligence (AI) that pre-dates his joining Oracle as a software engineer in 1987. He also founded NetSuite in 1998 as a pioneer software as a service provider. Goldberg spoke to Computer Weekly at the supplier’s recent SuiteConnect London 2025 conference. What follows below is an edited transcript of the interview, which largely covers his thoughts about the development of artificial intelligence in financial applications, including from his own company. Previous Goldberg interviews with Computer Weekly include: The interview is also discussed on InformaTechTarget’s ERP Confab podcast in the context of the rise of agentic AI as the putative new vanguard of AI innovation in business applications. Where do you think we are in terms of the narrative of AI in the business world now? We’ve had conversations about this before, including one about AI as a ‘sleeping giant’ I consider it very early days still. There have been tremendous advances that have allowed us to do things such as NetSuite Text Enhance and now are allowing us to do things like the Suite Analytics Assistant. So, the first phase was generating text. Now, it’s having human conversations to use the tools that we already have in our suite. And then the next step will be autonomous activity to do things for you, to find things for you proactively, and that’s going to revolutionise business applications, in some sense making large parts of it disappear, which is a good thing. The things that will get surfaced to you will be [what] you really need to see or to do, and that’s only going to be to people’s benefit because our users spend a lot of time in NetSuite – sometimes that’s productive time, sometimes that’s time where they’re just feeding data to be in the system. They have to spend time with the system to get the benefit and to get the return on investment of their time. But if they didn’t have to spend the time at all, that would be even better. So, that’s where we want to go and it will fundamentally change how these systems look and what it is to use them. Everything is going to be much different. Does that fit under the category of agentic [AI]? That’s what it’s being called right now, and you can add a lot of agents, but I think it’s still going to be NetSuite, Are you happy with the term ‘agentic’? That was not really an English word a year ago, so it’s not my favourite word. But if that’s what everybody uses to describe it, then I’ll use it to describe it. I feel it really appeals to the technical side of things, but I’m not sure it means much to the average user? An agent could be a spy or a travel agent – I mean, it just doesn’t mean that much. Or a contact centre agent, an actual human being And people understand what those agents mean. But I’m really focused on the end result, on how the user benefits, and not as much on the “inside baseball” terminology. That’s why I love the terms “advice and assistance”, because that’s what everybody can relate to. Tell me about this anything-as-a-service [XaaS] ERP launched this year, NetSuite XaaS Edition. It seems to be intended for high-growth SMEs that are using hybrid business models, including marketing and selling products and services together. But we have heard similar things from NetSuite before What, did you talk to Zach Nelson [a former chief executive officer of NetSuite]? He said product companies are becoming service companies and service companies are becoming product companies. Well, we like to read our own good messaging. We recycle as much as possible: it’s our sustainability strategy! He was very prescient about that, and you see it in a more recent generation of companies, especially over the past five years. Whoop is a good example – and a NetSuite customer. They have a health wearable that tracks all your activity. “I’m really focused on the end result, on how the user benefits, and not as much on the ‘inside baseball’ terminology” Evan Goldberg, Oracle NetSuite Their founder, Will Ahmed, is a young entrepreneur. He started this company from the ground up, he thought of as pan-category, as a hybrid. He wants the consumer to have an Apple-type experience. Apple is the prototypical ultimate hybrid company. They build incredible software, they have lots of services that they sell, and they do incredible manufacturing. And I think that’s the model for young entrepreneurs right now: “How do I become the Apple of X? This next generation of entrepreneurs do not think in traditional categories. These companies like Whoop that make a wearable, they have accessories, they have a service, and you have to buy the service to use the product, the product is not useful without the service. It’s all your fault [as journalists] because you guys communicate so effectively on the values of selling subscriptions and “as a service” that I think everybody, every business, is like, “I need to do that.” There’s nothing better than a recurring revenue stream to get the gift that keeps on giving. Coming back to agentic AI, I’ve spoken to Steve Miranda at Oracle about their Agent Studio product, part of Fusion Applications. What do you see as the similarities and differences between Oracle here and Oracle NetSuite? They’ve dived very deeply into agents. We work closely with their AI team. So, we’re doing some things that are different, and we’ll pass on our results to them and they’ll pass on their results to us and hopefully we’ll take the best of both. I think it’s good that we’re taking a bit of a different tack and then we can merge over the long run in terms of what makes sense to do in both places. There is, between NetSuite and Fusion, a lot of things that are very similar between a 5,000 person company and a 500 person company, and then there’s a lot of things that are different. We can do a better job in finding the things that are similar and collaborating. Steve Miranda and I are close. So, there’s a lot of opportunity there. It’s just that obviously we each have our own lists, and so sometimes that collaboration doesn’t get the attention it should, but I certainly intend to do more of it over time. Is there anything analogous to Agent Studio at NetSuite, which is primarily about the orchestration of agents? Not yet, but we’re looking closely at it. It is an interesting approach that they’ve taken and we are paying close attention to it. So, you might see something like that from us. But we’ve got to make sure that, for our users, it’s not so highly technical. Companies that use Fusion have more resources, real experts who are able to build some of this stuff, and our customers have an admin or maybe a small admin team that do lots of different things, so that’s what we’re going to have to figure out. Interview: José Andrés on His New Book, “Change the Recipe,” and His Humanitarian Work Interview: José Andrés on His New Book, “Change the Recipe,” and His Humanitarian Work When I landed in Gaza to assess the needs after the bombings. When I went into Ukraine with my team, into hospitals, onto destroyed roads. Every crisis pushes you out of comfort and into humanity. What are the best books you’ve ever read on cooking? “On Food and Cooking,” by Harold McGee, where science meets magic. On the modern side, “Sous-Vide Cuisine,” by Joan Roca and Salvador Brugués, is a foundational text. “Arroces Contemporáneos,” by Quique Dacosta, is a revolutionary approach to rice dishes, showcasing why Spanish chefs have been the most technical in the world over the last 30 years. Anything by Ferran Adrià — his work at El Bulli redefined modern gastronomy. On the traditional side, “La Cocina Completa,” by the Marquesa de Parabere, provides an extensive look into Spain’s culinary heritage. What book has had the greatest impact on you? “The Grapes of Wrath,” by John Steinbeck, made me understand hunger, dignity, migration and the injustice of the systems that create suffering. It lit a fire in me that still burns. What’s the most interesting thing you learned from a book recently? That in some parts of the world, seeds are passed down like family heirlooms. A grandmother’s pepper seed becomes a granddaughter’s hope. Food is memory. Food is resistance. One book that reminded me of this is “Traditional Ukrainian Cookery,” by Savella Stechishin. A treasure chest of recipes, yes, it’s also about survival, migration, and cultural identity preserved through generations. It’s more than a cookbook; it’s a monument. And it shows how food and dishes are a powerful tool of never forgetting. If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be? “The Undocumented Americans,” by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, to know who truly keeps America fed, clothed and standing. Or “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” by Michael Pollan, to understand how food policy is national policy. You’re organizing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, do you invite? Gabriel García Márquez to talk about memory and magic. Ernest Hemingway to argue over wine, talk about war and writing, and maybe throw some jamón on the fire. Men found guilty of Aboriginal boy’s violent ******* Men found guilty of Aboriginal boy’s violent ******* Warning: This article contains the name and images of an Indigenous person who has died. His family has given permission to use his name and image. Two men have been found guilty of the ******* of Cassius Turvey, an Aboriginal schoolboy who was chased down by a vigilante gang and beaten, in a case which outraged Australia. The 15-year-old Noongar Yamatji boy died of head injuries in October 2022, 10 days after he was brutally assaulted on the outskirts of Perth – prompting vigils and protests nationwide. Four people were charged with his ******* and Jack Steven James Brearley, 24, and Brodie Lee Palmer, 29, were on Thursday found guilty after a 12-week trial. Mitchell Colin Forth, 27, was instead found guilty of manslaughter, and a woman who was with the trio in the moments before the attack was acquitted. Speaking outside court, Cassius’ mum Mechelle Turvey said she was “numb with relief” at the verdict after “three months of hell”. But she added that “justice, to me, will never be served because I don’t have my son, and he’s not coming back”. The trial was told the attack on Cassius was the culmination of a complex series of ****-for-tat events “that had absolutely nothing to do with him”, according to the *********** Associated Press. The group had been “hunting for kids” because somebody had damaged Brearley’s car windows, prosecutors said. “Somebody smashed my car, they’re about to die,” Brearley was heard saying on CCTV footage captured shortly before the incident and played to the court. There is no suggestion Cassius had any involvement in what happened to the car, but he was among a throng of kids who were confronted by the trio of men while walking along a suburban street after school. A boy on crutches was assaulted, sending the others scattering through nearby bushland to escape. Prosecutors alleged the trio caught Cassius and knocked him to the ground, where he was hit on the head at least twice with a short metal pole, leaving him with a brain bleed. In the days after the attack, Cassius underwent surgeries in hospital, aimed at relieving the pressure on his brain and saving his life. Meanwhile, Brearley was caught on camera boasting about beating the child. “He was laying in the field and I was just smacking him with a trolley pole so hard, he learnt his lesson,” he was heard saying on a phone call played at the trial, according to a report by the *********** Broadcasting Corporation. Brearley told the court his assault on Cassius was self-defence, and claimed it was Palmer who had hit him with the metal pole. Palmer said the opposite, blaming Brearley. Ultimately the jury found both responsible for his *******, and Forth guilty of manslaughter. The men are due to return to court for sentencing hearing on 26 June. Outside court, Mrs Turvey embarked on a list of thank yous, including for the trial witnesses, most of whom were “young children that are scarred for life”. “I’d like to thank all of Australia, people that know us, for all of their love and support,” she added. Speaking to the BBC the month after his death, Mrs Turvey said her son was beloved in the local community. Along with two of his friends, he had set up a small business in order to reach out to neighbours and mow lawns. He wanted to change the negative stereotypes about Aboriginal youth in Australia. “He was funny. He loved posing,” Mechelle Turvey said, showing photos of Cassius smiling. His killing in 2022 sparked national grief and anger. Thousands of people attended vigils for Cassius in more than two dozen places across the country, with events also being held in the US and New Zealand. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese claimed the attack was “clearly” racially motivated – though this was not advanced as a motive in court – and it reopened a national debate about racial discrimination. “Australia does have a shocking reputation around the world for this kind of violence,” Human rights lawyer Hannah McGlade told the BBC at the time. WhatsApp Message Summarisation, AI-Powered Chat Wallpapers Spotted in Development WhatsApp Message Summarisation, AI-Powered Chat Wallpapers Spotted in Development WhatsApp recently detailed its efforts to build a secure cloud technology called Private Processing for AI features, and the first feature that could use the privacy focused feature has now been spotted in development by a feature tracker. The messaging platform is also said to be working on a new feature that lets users generate AI-powered chat wallpapers. While these features are currently in development, WhatsApp has begun testing a feature that lets users add prompts to status updates on iOS and Android. WhatsApp Message Summarisation Said to Use Private Processing Feature tracker WABetaInfo discovered two new AI-powered features on recent beta versions of WhatsApp for Android. The message summarisation feature, currently in development, can help users catch up on a conversation after receiving a series of messages in a chat. It was spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.15.12, but it isn’t ready for beta testers to try out. Users will see a Summarise with Meta AI button above the latest unread message, according to WABetaInfo. The feature will send a request to Meta’s servers, where these messages will be handled using the Private Processing technology that was recently unveiled by the company. The feature tracker claims that this process doesn’t break the end-to-end encryption. The second feature that is in development is an AI-powered wallpaper generator that uses Meta AI. A screenshot shared by the blogger shows a new Create with AI option in the Wallpaper section of the WhatsApp settings, where users can write prompts to generate images and set them as their chat wallpaper. The messaging platform already allows users to generate images using prompts in chats, and the AI-powered wallpaper generation feature is expected to work in a similar fashion. WhatsApp will also reportedly allow users to refine or modify their prompts to generate more options. WhatsApp Begins Testing Topics on Status Updates While the AI-powered wallpaper generation and message summarisation features are still in development, beta testers can now try out another feature that is rolling out to users on recent builds. After updating to WhatsApp for iOS 25.14.77 (stable) and WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.15.13, some users will have access to themed prompts for status updates. Prompts are currently available on other Meta apps like Instagram and Facebook, and they allow users to add interactive stickers with buttons that prompt users to upload similar status updates. For example, a user can create a collage of their top photos from March and then post them with a prompt that has an Add Yours button that can be clicked by their followers. US judge blocks plan to deport migrants to Libya US judge blocks plan to deport migrants to Libya A US judge in Boston ordered a temporary block on the Trump administration’s plan to deport migrants to Libya, saying it would “clearly violate” a prior order he made that ensures their right to due process. The order came after two US officials told BBC partner CBS News that the US may soon start deporting migrants to Libya as part of its crackdown on immigration. In response to the deportations report, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh wrote in a statement on X that his country refused “to be a destination for the deportation of migrants under any pretext.” Responding to the same report, a spokesperson for the US state department said they would not discuss the matter. The officials who spoke to CBS – who requested anonymity – said the US military could fly migrants to the North African country as early as this week. The move is likely to spark controversy – Libya has been mired in conflict for more than a decade and the US state department advises Americans not to travel there due to factors like crime, terrorism and civil unrest. Immigration lawyers moved quickly on Wednesday to prevent the Trump administration from carrying out the deportations, asking a Massachusetts judge to “urgently” issue a temporary block. “Multiple credible sources report that flights are preparing to immediately depart the United States carrying class members for removal to Libya,” the attorneys wrote in their court filing US District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston responded late on Wednesday afternoon by issuing an order that restricts the Trump administration’s ability to quickly deport the migrants. In his ruling, Judge Murphy said the deportations “blatantly” defy an injunction he had previously issued that protects the due process rights of migrants subject to final deportation orders. That earlier ruling requires officials to provide migrants with a written notice in their language and a meaningful opportunity to file a claim to protect them from removal. Asked whether he was aware of the plan to deport migrants to Libya, President Donald Trump said on Wednesday: “I don’t know. You’ll have to ask homeland security.” Libya is thought to be one of several countries asked to accept migrant deportations by Trump’s administration. This week Rwanda confirmed it was in the “early stage” of talks with the US, while Benin, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini and Moldova have all been named in media reports. It is not clear how many people the US hopes to deport to Libya, or which part of Libya the migrants would be sent to. Since the overthrow of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been divided into two – the west is ruled by a UN-backed government, of which Dbeibeh is prime minister, while military strongman Gen Khalifa Haftar controls the east. Haftar’s son met US officials in Washington last Monday, but the US state department and a Libyan spokesperson said the meeting was not about deportations. Since returning to office in January, President Trump has launched a mass deportation campaign – at times relying on controversial tactics such as the invocation of a centuries-old wartime law. Earlier this week, the government offered migrants who are in the US illegally a sum worth $1,000 (£751) to leave the country. Durga Chew-Bose, Master of Moods, Reimagines ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ Durga Chew-Bose, Master of Moods, Reimagines ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ It was a Thursday night in early May, and Durga Chew-Bose was crossing Sixth Avenue with a serious expression. She was leaving the IFC Center, a movie theater in Greenwich Village where, when she lived in New York, she had gone to see art house films with a crew of other writers and artists she befriended in her 20s. On this warm evening some years later, she had attended a talk following a screening of her directorial debut, an adaptation of the French novel “Bonjour Tristesse” starring Chloë Sevigny and Lily McInerny. Ms. Chew-Bose, 39, was dressed a bit like one of her characters: meticulously, and in a Parisian brand that discerning viewers may have picked out in her style-conscious take on the classic. But far from the French Riviera, where the film is set, its director was clad in all ******, her dark hair tucked into her jacket collar. She held a children’s picture book, a gift from a friend to bring home to Montreal, where she lives with her husband, the filmmaker and professor Jesse Noah Klein, and their young son, Fran. “I wonder,” she said of the panel discussion that had followed the film, “if it was entertaining enough.” How she came to write and direct this new “Bonjour Tristesse” isn’t so straightforward, though Ms. Chew-Bose, a consummate cinephile, has long had a sense that her working in film was inevitable. Born to immigrant parents from Kolkata and raised in Montreal, she studied French literature and creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., graduating in 2009. Afterward, she lived in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Boerum Hill and Crown Heights, falling in with the city’s young literati. Among them: Lena Dunham, whom Ms. Chew-Bose reached out to for an interview about one of Ms. Dunham’s early films. “I remember thinking she was unusually elegant for someone in their early 20s,” Ms. Dunham said in an interview. “In the era of indie sleaze, she always carried herself more like a Joan Didion than a New York scenester,” she added, with “an inborn maturity and insight that seemed so out of reach for most of us. She had manners, style, restraint — we were all chasing various identities, and hers was totally formed.” Ms. Dunham cast her as an extra in “Tiny Furniture,” the 2010 indie comedy that jump-started Ms. Dunham’s career, in a scene at a gallery — one of just a few other film credits to Ms. Chew-Bose’s name before she was asked to reimagine “Bonjour Tristesse.” But it was Ms. Chew-Bose’s writing that had caught the attention of a pair of Toronto film producers, Katie Bird Nolan and Lindsay Tapscott, who in 2017 had her in mind to loosely adapt Françoise Sagan’s 1954 novel into a modern-day screenplay. “When I read Durga’s writing, there’s a spell you fall under a little bit, and that’s kind of what we wanted to happen in the movie,” said Ms. Tapscott, who with Ms. Nolan runs the female-focused production company ***** Nation Films. In particular, they had read Ms. Chew-Bose’s buzzy essay collection, “Too Much and Not the Mood,” which had been published that same year with Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The book gathered up Ms. Chew-Bose’s writings for small publications like Hazlitt and The Hairpin, where she had become known for enigmatic essays about living alone, her reluctance to correct people when they mishear her first name, and the meaning of an iPhone emoji she refers to as the “heart museum.” Ms. Chew-Bose knows “how to make an image have a feeling,” said the writer Haley Mlotek, who worked with her at Ssense, the e-commerce site Ms. Chew-Bose transformed into a venue for literary writing when she became its editor in chief in 2020. This was the sort of treatment Ms. Tapscott and Ms. Nolan wanted for “Bonjour Tristesse.” But when they reached out to Ms. Chew-Bose about the idea, she hesitated. The novel had already been adapted by Otto Preminger in 1958. Then there was the tricky content: The work is a coming-of-age story that follows the teenage Cécile who in the novel has an easygoing — if erotically charged — relationship with her widower father, who has brought his girlfriend, Elsa, on holiday in the south of France. The trio’s carefree dynamic is disrupted when Anne, a friend of Cécile’s late mother, arrives on the scene, forcing Cécile to study and keeping her away from her summer boyfriend. Romantic partners are swapped. Age gaps are disregarded. The source material seemed untouchable, and a bit dated. “But I’ve learned that hesitation is really exciting,” Ms. Chew-Bose told the audience at the IFC Center that evening, seated beside Ms. Sevigny, who plays Anne, and Ms. McInerny, Cécile. “It’s something you can work with.” Ms. Sevigny, too, said she had been uncertain at first about signing on for “Bonjour Tristesse.” But after reading Ms. Chew-Bose’s writing and speaking with her, she was sold. “I was just really taken with her as a person,” Ms. Sevigny said in an interview. “I think people are very drawn to her mind.” When in 2019 Ms. Chew-Bose delivered a rough outline of her screenplay to Ms. Nolan and Ms. Tapscott, it was brimming with the sort of choices that a director might make, they said in an interview. Though they had a sense Ms. Chew-Bose might be a natural choice to direct, they first sent her script to a handful of established directors. One replied that while he liked the script, there didn’t seem to be much room for his own creative touch in such a fleshed-out world. “From Cécile’s P.O.V., still lying flat on the beach, lifelessly, we watch as she grabs a handful of sand and lets it run through her fingers in soft, yellow streams, running out like time,” reads a stage direction early in the screenplay. The producers realized that Ms. Chew-Bose was already directing from the page. Why not invite her to do so officially? In 2021, they did, and she agreed. The result is a meticulously crafted world where no detail has been spared — like the fake books she commissioned from her longtime friend, the graphic designer Teddy Blanks, and his wife, the New York Times book critic Molly Young, to serve as her characters’ summer reading. Or the vintage bathing suits and trendy accessories chosen by Miyako Bellizzi, the film’s costume designer, who roomed with Ms. Chew-Bose leading up to the 30-day shoot in Cassis, France. Over dinner after the IFC screening, Ms. Bellizzi said that people who don’t know Ms. Chew-Bose well might not imagine how funny she is: “We would be on the floor laughing.” The next morning, at the Waverly Diner, Ms. Chew-Bose joked that the restaurant’s ambience and crimson booths recalled the final scene of “The Sopranos.” But she soon turned pensive. The film was now out in theaters, she explained, over a spinach-and-mushroom omelet and gluten-free toast. Anyone could buy a ticket to see it. “That’s obviously impossibly cool to me, as someone who loves movies, but I also feel vulnerable,” she said. Ms. Chew-Bose knows her creative sensibility is “not for everyone.” The people she imagines enjoying her new film, or her writing, she continued, are readers, in the broad sense. Not bookworms, per se, but people who “can be alone with their thoughts” and can “read between lines.” “Not knowing why something is moving you and being OK to live in that discomfort,” she added. There is intimacy, Ms. Chew-Bose explained, in small touches. “I think it reveals a lot about people, what they notice,” she said. “I like specificity. I love people who can experience emotion through detail and not big swings. Although I admire big swings.” Take, for instance, the moment in “Bonjour Tristesse” when the three women at the center of the film — Cécile, Elsa and Anne — carefully cut, or bite un-self-consciously, into an apple, revealing their personalities, psychological states and feelings of identification with one another. It’s art that is similarly attuned to both the mundanity and the romance of everyday life that most resonates with Ms. Chew-Bose. In that final “Sopranos” scene, for example, she said, as Tony selects Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” from a jukebox and other characters file into the diner, what really gets her is that his daughter, Meadow, is “just trying to parallel park.” Ms. Chew-Bose said she has always been sensitive, her radar finely calibrated. As a girl, she worried that “maybe I don’t understand the big things — big ideas. Maybe I’m having a hard time finding ways to express life, death, loss, joy — and so I need to describe the bread, and then that’s a vessel for joy.” Growing up in Canada, she focused on traditional markers of achievement — coursework at her French-immersion school, student council. Her father, Rana Bose, an engineer, writer, poet and playwright, and her mother, Dolores Chew, a professor of history and liberal arts, separated when she was 8, and later divorced. In May 2023, just days before “Bonjour Tristesse” would begin shooting, Ms. Chew-Bose’s father died after a yearslong illness with multiple myeloma. “He loved watching me stand somewhere with an audience, holding attention,” she recalled. She went on: “I would have called him right after this,” referring to this conversation. “Like, ‘Baba!’ — I would have turned into his daughter again.” Ms. Chew-Bose is already deep into her next film projects, two original screenplays she is developing with Ms. Nolan and Ms. Tapscott. One, “Dish Trick,” is “an unlikely found-family story” set in Montreal, she said. The other, “Soft as It Began,” is about the making of a film, and will be shot partly on location in Europe. She plans to direct both. She said she anticipated the challenges that she now knows firsthand can come with filmmaking. No matter. “One thing I learned in making this movie,” she said, “is I’ve got to make things.” Suddenly, with a flourish that Ms. Chew-Bose herself might have dreamed up, “Don’t Stop Believin’” came on over the restaurant speaker system. She put down her fork and raised her index finger in excitement, as a grin lit up her face. Is It Wrong to Date My Friend’s Ex? Is It Wrong to Date My Friend’s Ex? There’s no universally accepted “waiting *******” after a breakup that magically absolves everyone from various people’s expectations. But keep in mind that Alice’s reaction isn’t really about “the rules of dating etiquette” or who’s technically allowed to love whom and when. It’s about grief: the grief of losing a partner, a close friend and a loyal confidante, in the span of months — even if Alice initiated the breakup (you don’t say which way that went), or began seeing someone new, or you believed she should be fine. The fact is, you made a decision to date Jane while your friend Alice was grieving her own relationship with her. But here’s another truth that exists alongside the first one: You can choose to prioritize your joy. What you’re experiencing now — loss, confusion, a social ripple effect — is the price of this complexity. You miss Alice because losing a friendship, especially a longstanding one, is deeply impactful. You wish Alice could see your happiness as separate from her pain, and maybe one day she will. But for now, the space she’s asked for might be necessary for both of you to find your own clarity. You might consider honoring her need for space with a single thoughtful message indicating that even with this space, she matters to you. Something like, “Thinking of you. I’m sorry we’re not in a good place right now,” while also letting her know that you’d welcome a conversation if and when she’s ready. No demands, no justifications, just a reminder, as she probably feels betrayed and abandoned, that you have her in mind and are leaving the door wide open for whatever might happen next, whenever (if ever) next might be. As for the mutual friends who are excluding you — this happens in breakups of all kinds. Some friends take sides based on loyalty, whom they knew first or whose version of events they heard. Others may simply be uncomfortable with the complications. Focus on nurturing the friendships that remain supportive. In matters of the heart, we can’t always time our feelings conveniently. What matters most is that we handle them with grace and integrity, and accept the consequences that go with our choices. Want to Ask the Therapist? If you have a question, email *****@*****.tld. ‘Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted’ Review: In the Deep End ‘Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted’ Review: In the Deep End Premises for documentaries don’t come much more casual than in “Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted,” a profile organized around exactly what the title says. As the singer-songwriter Swamp Dogg, born Jerry Williams Jr., awaits the completion of a custom paint job on his pool in Los Angeles, he hangs out on the patio with various friends (including, at one point, Johnny Knoxville of “Jackass”) who drop by to reminisce. The directors — Isaac Gale and Ryan Olson — observe. The movie offers full-on immersion, or perhaps submersion, in Swamp Dogg’s world. His daughter Dr. Jeri Williams, a neurologist (“I’ve got five daughters, but this is the main one,” Swamp Dogg says), likens his home in Northridge to a bachelor pad for “aging musicians.” For years, Swamp Dogg let some of his musical collaborators, like David Kearney, who performed as Guitar Shorty and died in 2022, and Larry Clemon, known as Moogstar, live there too. With Swamp Dogg as MC, the film dutifully checks off biographical highlights: how Little Jerry Williams came up through R&B beginning in the 1950s; how he changed his name to Swamp Dogg in 1970 (“Jerry Williams just seemed too soft”); how the politics of his music (he played in Jane Fonda’s touring anti-war show in 1971) led, he says, to questions from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In addition, you’ll hear about how Swamp Dogg arranges the TVs in his home, about his recipe book (“If You Can Kill It I Can Cook It”) and about that time he put out an album of pets singing Beatles songs. At one point, the musician’s phone rings. He answers, “I’m in the middle of an interview. Call me later.” Somehow, an editor thought that was worth keeping — which should indicate how much this fans-only documentary gets bogged down with dull asides. Preorders began on April 8 for *** customers, and while they’re currently sold out everywhere online, we could see restocks in the coming days. American and ********* preorders were originally supposed to begin shortly after on April 9, but were delayed due to the new tariffs implemented by the US. After weeks of uncertainty, Nintendo finally confirmed that both countries would begin offering preorders on April 24. But as predicted, all retailers sold out almost instantly. We’re hopeful that there will be some restocks in the coming hours and days, and will be keeping an eye on the retailers above. Read more: How Nintendo Is Combating Switch 2 Scalpers How much will the Nintendo Switch 2 cost? There was some concern that the new US tariffs were going to lead to some significant price hikes on both the standalone console and the Mario Kart World bundle. Fortunately, Nintendo has confirmed that the original pricing still stands. The console will be available for $450, with the Mario Kart World bundle priced at $500. However, there has been a change to the price of some accessories, with some increasing by $5. When will the Nintendo Switch 2 be released? The Switch 2 is scheduled to begin shipping on June 5. Nintendo has confirmed that the preorder delay in the US and Canada won’t affect this release date. Nintendo recently updated its preorder page stating that a June 5 delivery is not guaranteed if you’re preordering from the manufacturer directly. Other retailers are still promising delivery on release day. When can I preorder Nintendo Switch 2 accessories? Preorders for Switch 2 controllers, cases and other accessories will begin at the same time as console preorders. For *** customers, that means you can start ordering them now. Additionally, some third-party Switch 2 accessories are already available. Just note that prices for some accessories have been increased. When can I preorder Nintendo Switch 2 games? As with accessories, Switch 2 game preorders will be available when console preorders go live. Fortunately, the cost of the two biggest launch titles will not be affected by the recent price increase of accessories. You’ll be able to order the digital copy of Mario Kart World for $80 and Donkey Kong Bananza for $70. Will the Nintendo Switch 2 come in other colors? For the new Switch 2, Nintendo has ditched the colored Joy-Cons for a more sleek, monochrome look — though there are still pops of red and blue around the analog sticks. As of now, Nintendo hasn’t said anything about additional colors. Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Bundle worth it? The Mario Kart series has been a long-standing tentpole for Nintendo, and fans were thrilled to hear that a new title is on the way. But the excitement was dampened by the announcement that the new game will come with an increased price tag: $80 for the digital edition, or $90 if you want a physical copy. You can bundle a digital copy with the console on release day for $500 total, which saves you $30 compared with buying them separately. It’s an excellent value if it’s a game you’re certain you want in your library, and likely the only “discount” we’ll see on this title for quite some time. Plus, Nintendo recently announced that this bundle will be available only “through fall 2025,” which means you’ll have a limited chance to take advantage of these savings. Nintendo Switch 2 preorders: What are people saying? There are still some mixed feelings about Nintendo’s newest console. While some are happy to see that Nintendo hasn’t altered much about the wildly popular original Switch, others feel not enough has changed to justify the $150 price hike — with CNET gaming expert Scott Stein calling it a console that “feels a lot like an updated version of a system many people already own.” The recent confirmation that the US tariffs won’t be leading to any further price increases has helped stifle gamers’ exasperation a bit, but many are still unhappy with the fact that select games will be selling for up to $20 more than the standard $60. Only time will tell whether most people consider the new console and games are worth the higher costs once they officially become available on June 5. Larry Lamb, who played Mick Shipman on the BBC’****** show for 17 years, said filming the Christmas episode last year was an “extraordinary experience.”. He added: “At the time, we all thought it probably won’t be the end, I’m sure we will be doing it again, but gradually what’s happened over the months, what I’ve realised is that was the end.” Lamb said he would always carry a part of Mick with him, and his upcoming tour for his new book, All Wrapped Up, has a Gavin and Stacey theme. PA Media The final episode aired on BBC One on Christmas Day 2024 The Christmas episode of the show racked up 19.11 million views, and Lamb said while it was sad it ended, it was a “masterpiece, no doubt about it”. He added: “That scene in the wedding – that’s up for the moment of the year. “It was the way to end this story, you can’t keep going on with it. Ruth and James brought it to a grand finale.” While he has moved on to a new chapter, he clearly will always have a soft spot for the show, as seen with his new book tour. “We’re starting in Billericay in the Reading Rooms and we’re going to finish in Barry in Marcos’ cafe at a date to be arranged,” he told BBC Essex. In between, Lamb will visit several bookshops and read extracts of his new novel. “It’s an adventure, it is all about a film crew going to a Caribbean island to make a film, and from the minute they set off, things go wrong,” he revealed. “It’s letting me show people the inside story of what film and television is all about because that is something I have been asked countless times.” Source link #Gavin #Stacey #star #BBC #show #return Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
