Diver dies in preliminary operations to recover tech tycoon’s sunken superyacht Diver dies in preliminary operations to recover tech tycoon’s sunken superyacht A diver died on Friday during preliminary operations to recover British tech tycoon Mike ******’s superyacht from the waters off the coast of northern Sicily, local police said. The 56-meter-long (184-foot) Bayesian was moored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, in August last year when it was likely hit by a downburst, a very strong downward wind, killing seven people, including ****** and his daughter Hannah. The accident happened on Friday happened while the diver was underwater in Porticello, police said, adding that the precise cause of death was still unknown. The attempt to lift the yacht off the sea bed is expected later this month and should help shed light on how a supposedly unsinkable vessel disappeared into the sea. 5. NBC resurrects legendary NBA voice Jim Fagan using AI NBC resurrects legendary NBA voice Jim Fagan using AI NBC Sports will use an AI-generated version of legendary announcer Jim Fagan’s voice in its upcoming NBA coverage The re-creation will appear in intros and promos with the approval of Fagan’s family NBC hopes to evoke nostalgia for 1990s basketball with the AI voice The booming, baritone narration by Jim Fagan is as much a part of 1990s NBA games as Bugs Bunny selling shoes with Michael Jordan or the “Roundball Rock” theme song. Though Fagan passed away in 2017, NBC has his voice ready to go for the upcoming season thanks to AI voice cloning. NBC Sports announced the plan for when it regains broadcasting rights this October. Fagan’s voice won’t be narrating entire games, the current commentators don’t have to worry about direct AI competition just yet. The plan is to use him selectively: show opens, promotional spots, maybe the dramatic lead-in to a playoff broadcast. The network is reportedly shelling out billions as part of a massive rights package shared with Amazon and Disney. What better way to brand its return than with the voice that defined the league’s TV glory years? NBC just hopes Fagan’s phantom voice will remind people of the NBA’s golden age three decades ago. You may like NBC approached the project carefully to avoid a backlash from Fagan’s fans. The company built Fagan’s vocal doppelganger with the permission and cooperation of Fagan’s family. “He took great pride in his work with NBC Sports, especially in helping set the stage for some of the most memorable moments in NBA history. Knowing that his voice will once again be part of the game he loved – and that a new generation of fans will get to experience it – is incredibly special for our family,” Fagan’s daughters, Jana Silvia Joyce and Risa Silvia-Koonin, said in a statement. “He would be so thrilled and proud to be a part of this.” Slam dunk AI If this sounds like the echo of a similar idea, that’s because NBCUniversal has dipped into its AI audio toolbox very recently. At the Paris Olympics last year, NBC recreated Al Michaels’ voice to deliver Olympic recaps on Peacock. There’s a trend in sports broadcasting to remix the past using futuristic tools. Whether it’s classic theme songs, throwback logos, or AI-generated recaps, the goal is novelty nostalgia, a feeling more than a strictly perfect recreation. And if it works, get ready for AI to resurrect Marv Albert next. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. 6. Consumer products stock rushing to leave China, Wall Street betting it can pull it off Consumer products stock rushing to leave China, Wall Street betting it can pull it off Wall Street is optimistic SharkNinja will be able to move its sourcing completely out of China. The company, which manufactures appliances such as vacuums and the Ninja Creami ice cream maker, rallied nearly 13% on Thursday following a first-quarter earnings beat. SharkNinja raised its guidance for its fiscal-year earnings, revenue growth and adjusted EBITDA estimates. Analysts applauded not only SharkNinja’s results, but also its plans to fully diversify out of China before year’s end. This gives it a “multi-year head start on competitors,” noted Jefferies analyst Randal Konik. Bank of America analyst Alexander Perry also said: “SN has shifted sourcing into S. East Asian countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia SN’s tariff mitigation includes increasing ASP’s on over 100 products, eliminating lower margin SKUs, and value engineering products to lower production costs. SN does not plan on reducing R & D costs.” Analysts remained resoundingly bullish on SharkNinja. Some also raised their price targets for the stock, including BofA and UBS. JPMorgan maintains overweight rating, price target of $98 Analyst Andrea Teixeira’s target implies about 7% upside from Thursday’s close. “We think there was a lot of debate on whether SN would/ wouldn’t guide given the tariff environment and precedent from discretionary peers. The fact that that the company guided inclusive of tariffs and actually raised estimates was a very positive surprise … In a normal environment investors may have been disappointed by that sort of update from SN, but in the current operating environment the results/outlook stand out, in our view, and speak to confidence in underlying business momentum and strength of the management team in deftly navigating the tariff environment.” Goldman Sachs keeps buy rating, raises price target to $112 from $100 The bank’s forecast is 22% above the stock’s current price. “We step away from the quarter with our constructive view intact. While we recognize the discretionary and geopolitical backdrop remains choppy overall, and note that execution risk remains elevated, we believe this provides opportunity for brands with momentum to capture additional market share. Here, the proactive actions SN has been taking to diversify its sourcing exposure outside of China over the last several quarters positions the company well to capitalize on potential shelf space opportunities relative to peers,” said analyst Brooke ******. Oppenheimer stands by outperform rating, raises price target to $120 from $105 Oppenheimer’s updated price target implies shares could rally 31% from here. “We believe today’s report likely increases investor confidence in management’s ability to navigate any future tariff developments. Our PT goes to $120 from $105, reflecting our increased conviction in the company’s ability to navigate the backdrop better than peers, leading to potentially even stronger share gains in the future.” Guggenheim reiterates buy rating but lowers target price to $120 from $135 The firm’s new target still implies upside of 31% over the next 12 months. “Bottom line, given the benefits associated with SN’s a) trusted vendor/supplier relationships, b) ability to value engineer across its assortment — i.e., configurations, features, technology, packaging, and more, and c) unmatched product innovation pipeline — supported by significant market investments, we continue to view SN as one of the best positioned to navigate through today’s dynamic macro-economic backdrop,” writes analyst Stephen Forbes. UBS maintains buy rating and lifts price target to $121 from $118.80 The bank’s 12-month price target is 32% above where SharkNinja is currently trading. “1Q25 sales growth and updated FY25 outlook beat market expectations as before the print investors concerned on slower 2Q/2025 growth under the tariffs. But we are impressed by SN’s proactive actions and growth potential amid uncertainties.” Bank of America keeps buy rating, raises price objective to $125 BofA’s updated price target implies a potential upside of 36%. “SN remains a top pick and a rare DD% consumer products growth company. We see potential for continued upward EPS revisions given: (1) strong new product contribution led Ninja Swirl, Shark CyroGlow (could add $100mm in 2025), and Shark TurboBlade; (2) significant growth in Int. led by France and Germany; (3) continued wholesale expansion especially in sporting goods, coolers, & outdoor fans/cooking.” Canaccord Genuity Capital Markets reiterates buy rating and increases price target to $127 from $112 The firm’s new forecast equates to 39% upside. “We cut estimates around Liberation Day expecting numbers to come down but similarly raise them as our confidence in the company’s ability to mitigate tariffs and grow in an uncertain macro backdrop has only increased. While peers will likely pull back on innovation and investments, SN will use the current market uncertainty to accelerate investments and further widen its competitive moat.” Jefferies maintains buy rating and $175 price target Analyst Randal Konik’s target implies upside of 91%. “The Shark and Ninja brands are thriving, driven by best-in-class mgmt and strong execution. The company’s innovation flywheel continues to deliver, fueling a compelling global expansion story. With such robust performance and growth potential, we believe SN shares present the best risk/ reward within our coverage and a compelling buying opportunity for investors today.” Source link #Consumer #products #stock #rushing #leave #China #Wall #Street #betting #pull Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

On one level, we’ve got a competitive marketplace where people who make [pricing] choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people that are price-sensitive,” he added. “So there are some folks who don’t want to see prices go up, even the ones deciding what the prices are. There are other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing and there are tariffs for the retail packaging. It’s getting gnarly out there.” Pitchford went on to say that Borderlands 4 has “more than twice” the development budget of Borderlands 3. He said preorders for Borderlands 4 will open “soon,” and that’s when people can find out the price. The executive went on to say he wants the game to sell well so Gearbox can reinvest those funds into future products, but as artists, he wants the game to be as accessible as possible to help it reach the widest possible audience. “So it’s a weird thing,” he said about pricing dynamics. The philosophy regarding pricing in general for Gearbox is for everyone to feel like they got a good deal out of the exchange–that is to say, that Borderlands 4 feels like it’s worth the price, Pitchford said. “We’re going to have a price set soon. It might be the new price that Nintendo and Microsoft have led with. It might be that we stay back. It’s going to be the people at the publishing house that decide that. We’ll know soon. I think it’s going to be fine, whatever the [price is]. It’s worth it.” Nintendo is charging $80 for Mario Kart World and Microsoft is raising prices to $80 as well for some games later this year. 8. Xbox Prime, PS6, Switch 2 May Have One More Console Rival by 2026 Xbox Prime, PS6, Switch 2 May Have One More Console Rival by 2026 We are currently deep into the lifespan of current-gen consoles with the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X/S already out for many years now. Sony and Microsoft are already cooking up the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and the Xbox Prime for the next generation. And with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release, the next-gen is coming very soon. While that’s all well and good, is Valve planning to gatecrash the next generation of console releases? The company has already done it before in the handheld market with the Steam Deck going against the Nintendo Switch. With the success of the Steam Deck and improved SteamOS infrastructure, it might be time for Valve to enter the console market with the Steam Box Valve’s Steam Box could be a competitor to the next-gen Xbox Prime and PS6 In February 2025, there was a rumor suggesting that Valve was working closely with AMD to develop drivers for the new RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards. This made us all wonder if Valve was building a powerful home console under the SteamOS umbrella. It’ll most likely be a consolized Steam Deck with significantly more powerful specs, essentially a Steam Deck 2 but without it being a handheld. Maybe it’ll come out at the same time as the Deck 2. A console variant and a handheld variant from Valve would be pretty awesome. — Allie-RX (@AllieRX) February 4, 2025 It wouldn’t have been a bad idea, considering the successful rollout of the Steam Deck, which corrected many of the mistakes of their earlier Steam Machine project. But tierre-Loup Griffais, a key architect at Valve and part of the team behind the Steam Deck., extinguished these rumors as soon as they started However, Griffais’ statement didn’t categorically deny the existence of new hardware. As we understand it, it only meant that the leaks may have looked too much into Valve’s driver work. To us, the idea of a modern Steam Box is more exciting than a Steam Deck 2. The handheld has undoubtedly carved out a niche for itself. But it’s limited by battery life, thermals, and portable form factor. They already tried this. Does anyone remember the Steam Machines or the Steam Controller? I do think their OS is significantly better now, but I doubt this will be a success. — exactly (@exactly34_) February 4, 2025 The timing also makes sense. Linux gaming has come a long way, and SteamOS has become a stable fan favorite platform among many gamers. So what this means is that Valve now has the software backbone it lacked during the Steam Machine era. Put that together with the experience gained with the Steam Deck, and there’s a chance for Valve to do it again. Valve could disrupt the console market the way it did the handheld market The market is wide open for a competitor to the PlayStation. | Image Credit: Valve Unlike the Steam Deck, a potential Steam Box wouldn’t be limited by battery life, thermals, or compact design. It could host more powerful CPUs and GPUs, and you know what that means. Imagine the ease of use that SteamOS provides, but on higher resolutions and with better performance on modern AAA games. Sounds good to us. If Valve were to actually do this, it could be an evolution of the original idea with the Steam Machine. It would essentially be a small form factor PC that is essentially a console due to it having SteamOS and the portability that comes with being a console. If Valve wanted to get even more creative, we could get swappable GPUs and expandable storage, and memory. Ultimately, we don’t know what Valve is cooking up. The company is known for its secrecy, and these rumors can only fuel our speculation. We know that the PlayStation 6 (PS6), Xbox Prime, and Nintendo Switch 2 could face some competition if the Steam Box ever comes out. Women’s World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams from 2031 Women’s World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams from 2031 Fifa has announced that the Women’s World Cup will be expanded from 32 to 48 teams from the 2031 tournament. The Fifa Council voted unanimously for the changes that will be in place for 2035 edition, due to be hosted in the United Kingdom. As a result of the increase in teams, the competition will adopt a 12-group format with an additional 40 matches, up from 64 to 104, that will extend the tournament by a week. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said the changes would give more nations to “the chance to benefit from the tournament to develop their women’s football structures”. He added: “This decision ensures we are maintaining the momentum in terms of growing women’s football globally.” England reached the final of the most recent Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 before losing to Spain. 11. Pope Leo XIV watched Conclave movie to prepare, brother says Pope Leo XIV watched Conclave movie to prepare, brother says ******** watchers weren’t the only ones consulting the movie Conclave before the pivotal election of a new pope. The new pontiff himself – Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Leo XIV – watched the 2024 movie dramatizing the ********’s selection process ahead of the sequestration of cardinals that chose him to lead the Catholic church, according to his older brother. John Prevost, the middle of three Prevost brothers – Robert, now the first American pope, is the youngest – told NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV in their native Chicago that he spoke with his younger brother a day before the conclave began. Related: Experts talk realism of Conclave movie: ‘Gets a lot of the details right’ “I said: ‘Are you ready for this? Did you watch the movie Conclave, so you know how to behave?’ And he had just finished watching the movie,” Prevost laughed. “So he knew how to behave.” The elder Prevost added: “I wanted to take his mind off of it [the real conclave], you know, laugh about something because this is now an awesome responsibility.” The drama-thriller directed by Edward Berger, based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, dramatized the selection process of a new pope following the death of a widely popular, moderate one. The fictional film, though based on real details, processes and dynamics within the insular ********, depicts political intrigue, gossip and rivalries within the church, ultimately culminating in the election of a surprise outsider candidate. In real life, the new Leo XIV was on few shortlists for pope, given that no American had ever been chosen to lead the Catholic church, and the fact that he was named cardinal only two years ago. According to his brother, Prevost himself doubted his chances. “He didn’t think so,” John Prevost said. “I didn’t believe it and Rob didn’t believe it – I should say Pope Leo didn’t believe it at all, because there’s not going to be an American pope was the attitude.” John Prevost did think his brother was in serious contention, however. “What I was reading and what I was hearing was that there were three outstanding candidates that were in first, second and third place,” he said, “the cardinal from the Philippines, the [********] secretary of state, and him [Robert].” Related: The holy screen: a brief history of popes on film and TV, from Peter O’Toole to Robbie Coltrane After a relatively short conclave – a day and four rounds of voting that ended on Thursday evening, local time – Pope Leo XIV assumed the role vacated by Pope Francis, who died aged 88 last month after a long ******* of ill health, with an address in Spanish and Italian to the many gathered in St Peter’s Square. (The new pope has spent most of his ecclesiastical career in Peru, and is a naturalized citizen of the South American country.) Now tasked with shepherding the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics through increasingly turbulent times, he will probably have little time for movies. But his brother provided some insight on how he likes to unwind from serious responsibilities. “First we do Wordle, because this is a regular thing, OK,” John Prevost said. “We do Words with Friends. It’s something to keep his mind off life in the real world.” Prevost also shared his family’s reaction to the news that his brother had become the 267th pope in history, and the first pontiff from the US. “It’s totally unreal, it’s totally surreal,” he said. “It’s a tremendous thing to take in, but it’s something to be very proud of.” Source link #Pope #Leo #XIV #watched #Conclave #movie #prepare #brother Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Newark air traffic controllers lost contact with planes overnight Newark air traffic controllers lost contact with planes overnight A man stands outside Terminal C with the airport control tower in the background at Newark Liberty International Airport, on May 6, 2025 in Newark, New Jersey. Andres Kudacki | Getty Images Air traffic controllers who guide planes in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport lost radar and communication with aircraft before dawn on Friday in another 90-second outage, the Federal Aviation Administration said, hours after the Trump administration unveiled a plan to overhaul the aging technology that keeps U.S. airspace space safe. The outage occurred at about 3:55 a.m. ET, the FAA said. There are far fewer aircraft flying overnight, so disruptions were minimal compared with a similar outage on the afternoon of April 28, which snarled air travel for days. Several controllers took leave because of the stress of that April incident, the FAA said. That exacerbated low staffing levels at the Philadelphia facility tasked with guiding planes in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, forcing the FAA to slow the airport’s traffic. Like in the April incident, Friday’s outage left controllers unable to communicate with aircraft and their radar screens dark. Airlines and labor groups said in February that the U.S. urgently needs billions of dollars in emergency funding from Congress for improvements to air traffic control, which has faced both staffing shortfalls and outdated equipment. 17. US weighs special status for Greenland US weighs special status for Greenland US officials are discussing a plan to pull Greenland into America’s sphere of influence using a type of agreement that the United States has used to keep close ties with several Pacific Island nations, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Under the plan being considered, the Trump administration would propose to Greenland’s leaders that the island enter into a so-called Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the United States. US President Donald Trump has demanded that his country take control of the Arctic mineral-rich island for security purposes. Greenlanders have repeatedly insisted that the island is not for ***** and they don’t want to become Americans. Instead, many support independence from Denmark. Between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, the world’s biggest island has been controlled by Denmark for about 300 years. It governs its own domestic affairs but its foreign and defence policies are formulated in Copenhagen. While the precise details of COFA agreements – which have only ever been extended to the small island nations of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau – vary depending on the signatory, the US government typically provides many essential services, from mail delivery to emergency management to military protection. In exchange, the US military operates freely in COFA countries and trade with the US is largely duty-free. President Donald Trump, who during his first administration floated the idea of acquiring Greenland, has pressed even harder since taking office in January, refusing to rule out taking the island by force. Denmark and Greenland have sharply rebuffed the idea. A COFA agreement would stop short of Trump’s ambition to make the island of 57,000 people a part of the US. It is not the only Greenland plan on the table, the sources said, and it would face many practical hurdles. Reuters reported before Trump took office that some advisers had informally suggested the idea. But it has not been previously revealed that White House officials have begun talks about the logistics behind such a proposal. Some officials at the National Security Council and the National Energy Dominance Council, which Trump established, are involved in the talks, two of the sources said. The National Economic Council is also involved, one of those sources added. COFA agreements have previously been inked with independent countries, and Greenland would likely need to separate from Denmark for such a plan to proceed. While polls show Greenlanders are interested in independence, surveys also show most do not want to be part of the US. A COFA – which cedes significant autonomy to Washington – could be viewed with similar scepticism. Washington’s existing COFA agreements with Palau, the Marshall Islands and Micronesia are seen across the US political spectrum as important for countering China’s growing influence in the Asia Pacific. Still, such accords have hit snags in the past. Republican lawmakers have at times opposed elements of the budget allotted to fund COFA agreements, creating deep frustrations in the countries that rely on the funds. Signing a COFA also offers no guarantee that a nation will be immune from influence operations by US rivals. In April, Reuters reported that ******** nationals had successfully cultivated close ties to senior political figures in Palau, alarming US officials. Administration officials argue the island is crucial to the US due to its deposits of minerals that have important high-tech and military applications, but which remain untapped due to labour shortages, scarce infrastructure and various other challenges. An administration official told Reuters the US was helping Greenland diversify its economy and gain greater economic independence from Denmark. The Development Finance Corporation and Export-Import Bank, both US agencies, could play a role in that process, the official said. The official pointed to the Tanbreez Project, which will see rare earths extracted on the island and processed in the US, as a particular bright spot in relations with Greenland. New York-based Critical Metals Corp holds a 42 per cent stake in the project, though that stake could increase considerably as part of a complex deal due to be completed later this year. The official said a COFA “could be an elegant way to address some of the concerns that we have when it comes to Greenland security,” but did not otherwise comment on the possibility of such an accord. 18. Pope Leo XIV’s $199K Childhood Home Is Swiftly Taken Off Market Hours After Conclave When Owner Realized He Could ‘Make a Larger Profit’ Pope Leo XIV’s $199K Childhood Home Is Swiftly Taken Off Market Hours After Conclave When Owner Realized He Could ‘Make a Larger Profit’ Pope Leo XIV‘s childhood home in Illinois was quickly yanked off the market just hours after conclave—when the owner, who had listed the home for just $199,000, realized he could “make a larger profit” in the wake of its former resident’s appointment as the leader of the Catholic church. The eyes of the world were fixated on the Sistine Chapel on May 8, when white smoke began billowing from its chimney, indicating that a new pope had been selected on the second day of the historic religious process. Soon after, Chicago-born cardinal Robert Francis Prevost stepped out onto the ******** balcony, his first appearance as the newly appointed Pope Leo XIV. Leo XIV made history when he replaced Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, becoming the first American to ever serve in the role—news that quickly prompted a frenzy of excitement, particularly in Dolton, IL, the small Chicago suburb where Prevost was raised. Focus quickly turned to the small three-bedroom, three-bathroom abode in which the Prevost family spent many years during his childhood, with property records revealing that the dwelling had actually been listed for ***** in January with an asking price of $219,000. The property, which is listed under an LLC, offers 1,200 square feet of living space and has a humble exterior surrounded by lush greenery. Inside, there is an open floor plan that accentuates the main living area and cozy fireplace. The average-sized kitchen comes complete with a marble countertop and ample cabinet space. After it was initially listed on Jan. 11, the property’s asking price was reduced by $14,000 to $205,000 on Jan. 17, before the owner—who had only purchased the home in May 2024—lowered his ask again to $199,000 on Feb. 14. However, the property was removed from the market on May 9—just one day after the new leader of the Catholic Church was elected. According to WGN News, the decision to delist the home was a very purposeful one, with the owner, who did not wish to be named, admitting that he realized he could “make a larger profit” on the dwelling given the very prominent new position its former resident now holds. The owner added that he had purchased the home six or seven months ago with a goal of renovating its interior, then offering it up as a rental. Donna Sagna, who has lived next door to the home for the last eight years, told the outlet that the current owner achieved his goal of overhauling the property, describing its interior as “beautiful.” However, she admitted that she hopes the house can serve a much loftier purpose than simply becoming a rented dwelling. “It’s rehabbed and it’s beautiful inside,” Sagna said. “I hope it continues to be a historical place for us all … I think they should keep it as a beautiful, historic landmark for Illinois.” Another resident told the outlet, “I was saying to my friends, look, the next pope could be from Dolton and they said, ope, they’ll never pick anybody from the United States. And sure enough, the one from Dolton wins.” Dolton is not the only community in the U.S. to have ties to the new pope—whose maternal side of the family actually hails from New Orleans. Jari Honora, a genealogist and historian for The Historic New Orleans Collection, discovered that the pope’s maternal grandparents once lived in the 7th Ward, a neighborhood that is known for its diverse culture, with mostly people of African, French, Spanish, and Native American descent residing there. The pope also has connections to “Creole roots,” which date back to 1722 when the majority of Louisiana’s population was Roman Catholic. “Our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has Creole of color roots [sic] from New Orleans on his mother’s side! What a great connection for our local population! They left New Orleans and went to Chicago between 1910 and 1912. “His grandparents were married in 1887 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Annette Street. In 1900, his grandparents owned and lived at 1933 North Prieur Street, a site taken by the Claiborne overpass,” Honora shared on Facebook. 19. ******** goods hit by Trump 145% tariffs begin arriving at U.S. ports ******** goods hit by Trump 145% tariffs begin arriving at U.S. ports Container ships sit docked at the Port of Los Angeles on May 06, 2025 in San Pedro, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images News | Getty Images The first shipping containers carrying ******** products that are subject to President Donald Trump’s 145% tariffs have begun arriving in U.S. ports. Seven ships carrying upward of 12,000 containers that sailed from China after those tariffs took effect have arrived at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, in California. Five more such ships are scheduled to arrive there in coming days. Amazon, Home Depot, Ikea, Ralph Lauren and Tractor Supply are among the companies with ******** goods in these containers, spanning a wide range of consumer items. In addition to housewares, apparel, and furniture, Amazon imported a wide variety of products on behalf of sellers, including refrigerators, deep fryers, mousepads, bookshelves and living room sofas. Tractor Supply shipments include portable drum fans, garden tools, and men’s work boots. Lamps and ceiling fans have been processed through customs for Home Depot. A Tractor Supply spokesperson referred CNBC to its recent earnings call on April 24 when the company pointed to “notable uncertainty” as a result of the tariffs. “Tractor Supply is actively working with its vendor and supply chain partners to navigate the impact of recently announced tariffs, while also monitoring the broader macroeconomic factors impacting its customers,” the spokesperson said. Ikea furniture; Speedo swim goggles and swim caps; Procter & Gamble tissue holders; Samsung printed circuit boards, microwaves and refrigerator parts; Ralph Lauren sweaters, cashmere, and blazers; Dr. Martens Airwair footwear; Samsung microwaves and refrigerator parts; LG washing machines, air conditioners, ranges, refrigerators and dishwashers; Bauer Hockey sporting goods; Lenovo computer parts; auto parts for Valeo North America; and headsets and computer keyboards for Polaris, were all among the ******** container goods. For many of the companies, products in categories deemed as essential to replenish are brought in despite concerns about consumer demand and an economic slowdown. Amazon said in a statement sent by email that it is working with its “broad, varied range of valued selling partners in our store to support them in adapting to the evolving environment while maintaining broad selection and low prices for customers.” Home Depot is in a quiet ******* ahead of announcing its quarterly results, and referred CNBC to an existing statement citing “a fluid environment.” “We, together with our vendors, are monitoring developments and will work closely to manage with the goal of being our customers’ advocate for value,” a Home Depot spokesperson said. ******** freight container traffic decline Trump suggested on Friday, ahead of key trade talks, that he was willing to lower tariffs on China to 80%, a rate many businesses would likely still consider to be extremely high. “80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B,” Trump said in a Truth Social post, referring to a planned meeting between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and counterparts from China in Switzerland this weekend. Brian Bourke, global chief commercial officer at SEKO Logistics, told CNBC that his clients continue to struggle in understanding how all of the various tariff provisions are stacked, or in some cases cancel each other out. “This confusion has led them to continually alter and update their scenario planning, freezing any other decisions for the business they would be making,” said Bourke. “Many of our clients priced and sold their products or projects prior to the tariff amounts being announced, and with the speed and severity as well as the quantity of new tariff provisions being announced, they are not able to change the pricing on items that have already sold and are arriving in May and June, or beyond.” The number of freight vessels and shipping containers headed to the U.S. from China has plummeted since the tariffs announcement in early April. Across the Asia-North America West Coast and Asia-North America East Coast trade routes, there was a total of 90 blank sailings across April and May, according to Sea-Intelligence. The Ocean Alliance (a freight consortium including ********-owned and operated COSCO and OOCL, Taiwan-based Evergreen, and French-owned CMA) accounted for 48 of those canceled sailings. Bookings are down anywhere from 30% to 50%, according to logistics providers and ocean carriers. According to the Global Port Tracker report released on Friday by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates, import cargo at the nation’s major container ports is expected to see its first year-over-year decline since 2023 as a result of the tariffs. In addition to decreased vessel sailings as a result of paused manufacturing orders from shippers and fewer containers to fill, ocean carriers are using smaller vessels to move trade. MSC, the largest ocean carrier in the world, along with the Gemini Alliance (comprised of Maersk and Hapag Lloyd), are among the freight companies using smaller vessels between the Asia-North America West Coast routes. MSC has reduced its container capacity by 28% year-over-year, according to Sea-Intelligence data analyzing the impact of canceled sailings and vessel changes, while Ocean Alliance container capacity is down by 26% year-over-year. Bourke said once shippers have finished bringing in what they consider essential stocks, they are in various degrees of “wait-and-see” mode with their supply chains, and continuing to cancel orders from China, which has led to widespread fears about product shortages and the potential for empty shelves. “What happens when safety stocks that had been built up disappear?” Bourke said. 20. India and Pakistan to Move or Cancel Cricket Games Amid Rising Tensions India and Pakistan to Move or Cancel Cricket Games Amid Rising Tensions The escalating conflict between India and Pakistan has forced both countries to suspend or move their cash-rich cricket leagues. The Indian Premier League, one of the world’s richest sports competitions with ten franchises valued at about $1 billion each, said it had suspended the matches of its ongoing season for a week. The league’s 5-year broadcast deal alone is worth over $6 billion. On Thursday night, one of its matches in the Himalayan town of Dharamsala had to be abandoned, and the stadium of about 20,000 people vacated, as heavy shelling continued further along the border with Pakistan. The Pakistan Super League, much smaller than the Indian Premier League but with great significance in Pakistan, said it was moving the remaining eight games of its season to the United Arab Emirates because of safety concerns. One of the league’s matches on Thursday had to be postponed in Rawalpindi after the Pakistani authorities accused India of targeting the city’s cricket stadium. In the past, cricket has helped bring the two countries closer. India and Pakistan, along with Sri Lanka, jointly hosted the cricket World Cup in 1996. But separating the political tensions from cricket has became almost impossible after 2008, when Pakistani militants crossed into India and attacked Mumbai, killing more than 160 people. Pakistani players have been banned from playing in the lucrative Indian league that recruits the world’s best talent for exuberant salaries. The two nations have also stopped playing each other, with the exception of global events like the World Cup. 22. Congressional Democrats visit Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk in ICE detention centers Congressional Democrats visit Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk in ICE detention centers Washington — Democratic members of Congress on Tuesday traveled to Louisiana to meet with Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk, who remain in custody at Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers as they face deportation. Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia University, and Öztürk, a Tufts University graduate student, were separately taken into custody in March by federal authorities amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on students with visas and green cards who participated in pro-************ activities. Neither has been charged with a crime, and the lawmakers demanded their immediate release. “Both of these individuals are political prisoners. They don’t belong here,” said Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts. The congressional delegation also included Rep. Troy Carter of Louisiana, Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, Rep. Ayana Pressley of Massachusetts and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, all Democrats. “They’re frightened. They’re concerned. They want to go home,” Carter said. The Trump administration has argued that Khalil should be stripped of his green card and deported due to his links to protests on Columbia’s campus against the war in Gaza last year. It also alleged Öztürk, a Turkish national, had “engaged in activities in support of ******.” Her attorneys argue she was detained for writing an opinion piece that called on the school to divest from Israel and “acknowledge the ************ genocide.” In many of the student visa cases the Trump administration has invoked a rarely used provision of immigration law that allows the government to seek the deportation of noncitizens whose “presence or activities” are determined to “have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.” The Trump administration has argued it has the right to revoke students’ visas. “When you apply to enter the United States and you get a visa, you are a guest,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” Both Khalil and Öztürk are challenging their detentions. Khalil, who is married to a U.S. citizen, was denied his request for temporary release for the birth of his first child on Monday. “That’s cruelty,” McGovern said. Markey noted that Öztürk has suffered multiple asthma attacks while in detention. Öztürk said in a court filing she has received limited medical attention, though a senior Department of Homeland Security official said she has gotten “prompt medical care and services.” “Notwithstanding that, Rümeysa continues to have a spirit. She continues to have a sense of right that fuels her very being,” Markey said. The visit follows recent trips by other congressional Democrats to El Salvador to press for the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported last month by the Trump administration. Sen. Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, also met Monday with Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident detained in Vermont. Mahdawi, who led protests against the Israel-****** war at Columbia University, was taken into custody earlier this month during a U.S. citizenship interview. 25. New FEMA head tells staff: “Don’t get in my way… I will run right over you” New FEMA head tells staff: “Don’t get in my way… I will run right over you” During his first all-hands meeting with agency personnel, acting Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator David Richardson issued a striking warning: “Don’t get in my way,” the former United States Marine Corps ground combat officer told staff, according to a recording of the speech obtained by CBS News. “Obfuscation, delay, undermining,” Richardson continued, referencing tactics he believed a fraction of FEMA staff might try to subvert his agenda. “If you’re one of those 20% of the people and you think those tactics and techniques are going to help you, they will not, because I will run right over you. I will achieve the president’s intent.” Richardson’s formal title is Senior Official Performing the Duties of FEMA Administrator. He was named to the role Thursday and has not been formally nominated nor confirmed by the U.S. Senate. “I can’t recall the full title, but essentially, I’m acting,” Richardson told staff on Friday, “I don’t need the full title. All I need is the authority from the president to put me in here as some degree of acting and I will make sure that his intent gets completed. I don’t stop at yield signs,” he continued. “I, and I alone in FEMA, speak for FEMA,” Richardson said. FEMA did not reply to a request for comment. When told about Richardsdon’s meeting, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin responded, “sounds like a productive first meeting.” Richardson was appointed to lead FEMA after Cameron Hamilton, the former acting administrator, was fired Thursday morning, one day after publicly breaking with the Trump administration’s expressed intent to eliminate the nation’s disaster relief agency. “I do not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” Hamilton testified Tuesday before a House Appropriations Committee hearing on Capitol Hill. His dismissal comes roughly three weeks before the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Friday that Hamilton was fired for testifying “contrary to the president,” presumably when he advocated for the nation’s disaster relief agency not to be eliminated. President Trump said shortly after taking office that he planned to “begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA, or maybe getting rid of FEMA,” criticizing the agency for allegedly responding slowly to natural disasters. In his first address as acting head of the agency, Richardson doubled down on the president’s promise to reduce its scope and carry out the will of Mr. Trump. “I am as bent on achieving the President’s intent as I was on making sure that I did my duty, where I took my Marines to Iraq, eleven of them,” Richardson was recorded as telling FEMA employees. According to his official biography posted by the Department of Homeland Security, the former Marine commanded artillery units, serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa. Richardson also taught history at George Washington University, strategy at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School, and Marine Corps Martial Arts. During his roughly 17-minute speech to FEMA employees, he recalled sending home a member of the Second Marine Division from Iraq. “I had too important of a mission for anybody to undermine me or to make things difficult,” Richardson said. “We’re going to find out how to push things down to the states,” the acting leader later added. “That should be done at the state level. Also going to find out how we can do more cost sharing with the states.” During his address to FEMA employees, Richardson described his leadership style at length, noting that coworkers will rarely see him sitting behind his desk. “Most of this time I will sit at the table drinking tea while I’m working out something with a stubby pencil,” Richardson said, pointing a sharpened pencil into the air from behind a FEMA podium, according to the video of the recording. Richardson told FEMA employees, “I have never read a book on leadership,” but contended that, “I’m fine operating in chaos and a very ambiguous environment.” Toward the end of his remarks, the acting FEMA head referred all staff to two memos he authored in recent weeks, and distributed Friday morning. “They’re very short, but they will require almost all of you in this room input to some degree or another,” Richardson said. According to the memos, obtained by CBS News, Richardson has directed staff to provide a slew of internal memos to him assessing FEMA’s preparedness for 2025, as well as organization charts, watchdog reports and a list of all known gaps in the agency’s preparedness or core capabilities. Richardson declined to take any questions from employees during his day one remarks, instead promising to host a town hall in the coming weeks so that employees could play, “stump the chump.” “It’s not that I’m afraid of questions, but I want you to read the memos,” said Richardson. FEMA’s new acting administrator said that he will begin his first day by “looking at all the laws and statutes that guide FEMA and making sure that we are only doing the things that are within the law.” He added, “If we’re not doing that, we are wasting the American taxpayer dollars.” Reflecting on his time in the Marine Corps, Richardson paused for a moment. “I’ve had friends who are either dead, physically or very damaged emotionally because they ran into trouble doing things that were not within their mission during combat.
