Homeland Security subpoenas California’s immigrant assistance program in latest crackdown on ******** immigration Homeland Security subpoenas California’s immigrant assistance program in latest crackdown on ******** immigration In its latest legal challenge, the Department of Homeland Security has subpoenaed California’s cash assistance program for immigrants. It is demanding a slew of records from Los Angeles County to determine if individuals in the United States illegally received payments stemming from the Social Security Administration, dating back to 2021. The legal action centers on California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants, or CAPI, providing cash assistance to “certain aged, blind, and disabled legal immigrants” ineligible for social security payments due to their immigration status. The pending investigation led by Los Angeles’ Homeland Security Investigations – an investigative arm of DHS – has sought the following records: Applicant’s Name and Date of Birth Copies of Applications Immigration Status Proof of Ineligibility for SSI from the Social Security Administration Affidavits in Support of the Application Recipients of Los Angeles County’s CAPI program must be non-citizens who have been lawfully admitted into the U.S., paroled, granted conditional entry, or whose removal has been withheld. Candidates include Afghan and Ukrainian humanitarian parolees. According to Los Angeles County’s website, the payments are designed for recipients who are ages 65 or over, blind, or disabled. According to the Department of Homeland Security, “more than 2 million ineligible ******** aliens received a Social Security Number in fiscal year 2024 alone.” The Public Policy Institute of California estimates that about 1.1 million people receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or State Supplementary Payment (SSP) monthly grants, with just over half of all payments granted to those 65 years and older. That number includes about 15,000 legal residents who do not meet additional non-citizen criteria for social security payments. Last month, President Trump issued an executive order aimed at curbing incentives for individuals living illegally in the United States. The memo directs the secretary of Homeland Security to work with the secretaries of Labor and Health and Human Services, the commissioner of the Social Security Administration, and the U.S. attorney general, “to ensure ineligible ******** aliens do not receive funds from Social Security programs and prioritize civil or criminal enforcement against states or localities for potential violations” of federal law. In a statement, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem accused “radical left politicians in California” of prioritizing migrants in the U.S. over American citizens by “giving ******** aliens access to cash benefits.” Noem vowed that the Trump Administration is working to “identify abuse and exploitation of public benefits and make sure those in this country illegally are not receiving federal benefits or other financial incentives to stay illegally.” “If you are an ******** immigrant, you should leave now,” Noem said. “The gravy train is over. While this subpoena focuses only on Los Angeles County – it is just the beginning.” Nicole Sganga Nicole Sganga is CBS News’ homeland security and justice correspondent. This gilded ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition features actual 24k gold and could set you back $10,000 This gilded ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition features actual 24k gold and could set you back $10,000 If you thought standard RTX 5090 GPUs were expensive, brace yourself for a variant that’s literally draped in gold. Listings for the Asus’ premier ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition have surfaced at a handful of Middle Eastern retailers, which are commanding upwards of $10,600 for the GPU, via VideoCardz. Would you rather have the opulent gold-plated RTX 5090 from Asus, or a standard RTX 5090 plus a significant chunk of change left over for a nice vacation or a used car? Asus took the wraps off this Middle-Eastern exclusive GPU in early February, notably without specifying any MSRPs. But let’s be honest, which retailer adheres to MSRPs these days? Standing out as the flagship lineup, ROG Astral is a new GPU sub-brand that Asus introduced with the RTX 50 series. With a suite of added features such as the ability to monitor per-pin current to prevent connector meltdowns, Asus recommends a $3,099 MSRP for its Astral GPUs. It’s pretty obvious the Dhahab Edition, which means Gold in Arabic, isn’t going to be kind on your wallet. Across various regions, the ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition has been listed ranging from $6,700 to $10,600. Design-wise, the GPU predominantly offers a gold aesthetic, featuring a quad-fan cooling solution. Even the markings on the fan are tinted in gold. Symbolizing the Arabic culture, the GPU includes subtle illustrations of skyscrapers, camels, and Arabic calligraphy. It comes in a massive 3.8-slot design, with OC boost clock speeds of 2.61 GHz, though based on our testing, real-world frequencies will likely be higher. You may like According to Asus, this GPU has 6.5g of pure 24K gold, which equates to almost $700, giving you the bragging rights of owning a graphics card that’s literally made of gold. This GPU clearly targets a very niche market, considering that you can probably snag an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell, with a massive 96GB framebuffer and a beefier AD102 chip for about the same price. It’s certainly one for the collectors. Considering there may only be a limited number of these GPUs manufactured, its future value will be tied to collector demand, making it a prize for the highest bidder in the coming years. Nissan to cut over 10,000 more jobs globally, NHK reports Nissan to cut over 10,000 more jobs globally, NHK reports A brand new Nissan car is displayed on the sales lot at Golden State Nissan on March 26, 2025 in Colma, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Nissan Motor will additionally slash more than 10,000 jobs globally, bringing the total cuts including previously announced layoffs to about 20,000 or 15% of its workforce, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported on Monday. The struggling Japanese automaker warned last month it would likely book a record 700 billion yen to 750 billion yen ($4.74 billion-$5.08 billion) net loss in the financial year that ended in March due to impairment charges. Japan’s third-biggest automaker is set to announce its full-year results on Tuesday. It declined to comment on the report. Nissan is looking to make its business leaner and more resilient after doing poorly in its top market the United States, where its performance suffered heavily from a lack of hybrids and an ageing line-up. It is also struggling in China, where it is looking to stop a punishing sales slide with the launch of some 10 new vehicles in the coming years. Nissan, which had more than 133,000 employees as of March last year, had already been looking to slash 9,000 jobs and reduce global capacity by 20% as part of its restructuring plans. Its weak performance forced it to cut its profit outlook four times for the financial year that just ended. The Dark Ages Controls Are Designed to Not Be a Button-Smasher Like Eternal The Dark Ages Controls Are Designed to Not Be a Button-Smasher Like Eternal If you’ve ever played Doom Eternal, you know the finger gymnastics required to survive its ****** hordes. Between weapon swapping, dashing, flame belching, and glory killing—often within milliseconds—it sometimes felt like you needed extra fingers. But now, with Doom: The Dark Ages mere days away (early access starting later today for Premium Edition owners), id Software has completely reimagined how players interact with the Slayer’s arsenal. Instead of spreading abilities across every button on your controller, the team has built a more intuitive system around three core mechanics that work together harmoniously. It’s a bold departure that might just make this medieval hellscape more accessible without sacrificing the depth that made Eternal so rewarding. How Doom: The Dark Ages discards the idea of button-mashing The most significant change in Doom: The Dark Ages is how id Software has consolidated multiple actions under a single button. According to director Hugo Martin in a recent Vice interview: Yeah, ’cause it’s adding depth. There’s a lot of depth in Eternal, but there’s also a lot of buttons to press. So rather than spreading out, we kind of stacked it. So it’s a more streamlined, ergonomic control scheme. This approach means fewer buttons to remember but just as many tactical options. Rather than having separate commands for different defensive or offensive maneuvers, the game contextually determines what you need based on the situation. Martin elaborates: It’s all about these three primary actions you perform, which are the shield, the melee, and the guns. There’s a synergy amongst those. We’re encouraging you to use them, to use those attacks in combination with each other. The shield exemplifies this brilliantly. With a single button, you can block incoming attacks, parry projectiles, bash enemies, or throw it Captain America-style to decapitate demons. In Eternal, these might have been four separate commands. Now they’re all contextually triggered through one intuitive control. This streamlining actually enhances the power fantasy. By making controls more intuitive, you spend less time remembering button combinations and more time feeling like an unstoppable ******-slaying tank. It’s a design philosophy that prioritizes player experience over mechanical complexity. Finding the sweet spot between accessibility and depth Press once, rip twice, tear forever. | Image Credit: id Software/Bethesda Softworks The changes to The Dark Ages’ control scheme reflect a broader philosophy about game design. Martin touched on this balance in the same interview: It’s that sweet spot… The game is asking you to do what you want to do, and doing the right thing is intuitive and it’s fun. That’s the key. When we watch you guys play, right now, it’s just catching those little edge cases, those cracks in the fun zone, where people are slipping. Instead of the aerial acrobatics of Eternal, The Dark Ages plants you firmly in the dirt—a medieval wrecking ball that crushes demons through brute force rather than acrobatics. The shield charge gives you that rush of closing distance without fumbling for the Super Shotgun, and it works with every weapon in your arsenal. Melee attacks now function as a precious currency—spend three powerful strikes, then earn them back through aggressive gunplay. It’s not simpler—it’s smarter. id Software has somehow preserved the trademark speed without relying on double jumps or dashes. Between the shield bash and the throwable death disc, you’re still a blur of violence across the battlefield. They didn’t dumb down their formula—no, they’ve distilled it to its purest form, giving newcomers a fighting chance while veterans discover entirely new ways to paint Hell’s walls red. Have you had the chance to play Doom: The Dark Ages yet? Please let us know in the comments if you find the new control scheme more intuitive than Eternal‘s button-mashing. ChatGPT’s Deep Research Feature Can Now Connect With GitHub Repositories ChatGPT’s Deep Research Feature Can Now Connect With GitHub Repositories ChatGPT is getting a new feature that will enable users to connect their GitHub repository with the chatbot. Announced last week, the new feature is part of the Deep Research agent. OpenAI said the new feature will allow the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to prepare comprehensive reports based on the user’s and others’ repositories. Currently, the San Francisco-based AI firm is rolling out the feature to only the paid subscribers of the platform. Notably, it can take up to five minutes before a newly created or edited repository begins showing up in the Deep Research GitHub connector. GitHub Connector Is Now Part of Deep Research in ChatGPT In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of OpenAI Developers announced the rollout of the new feature. ChatGPT’s Deep Research with GitHub is available globally to Team users. All Plus and Pro subscribers will also get the feature, except those in the EEA, Switzerland, and the ***. You can now connect GitHub repos to deep research in ChatGPT. Ask a question and the deep research agent will read and search the repo’s source code and PRs, returning a detailed report with citations. Hit deep research → GitHub to get started. pic.twitter.com/cdrQChfAU3 — OpenAI Developers (@OpenAIDevs) May 8, 2025 The account also shared a video demo of the feature. Based on that, the eligible users will first have to ask Deep Research a query. Then they will see a new GitHub connection button, tapping which will give the chatbot access to the user’s, as well as any other third-party public repository. “Ask a question and the deep research agent will read and search the repo’s source code and PRs, returning a detailed report with citations,” OpenAI said. In its support pages, the AI firm highlighted that the feature is currently in beta, and GitHub’s terms and conditions will apply. When Deep Research connects to GitHub, it lets ChatGPT pull live data from repositories, including code, Readme files, and other documents. The chatbot can also analyse the data to provide insights about the content. Notably, OpenAI highlights that if ChatGPT Plus and Pro users have kept the “Improve the model for everyone” setting on, the company will use the GitHub data to train its models. However, if the setting is turned off, the data will not be stored. The AI firm added that it does not store data from its business offerings, including Team, Enterprise, Edu, and its application programming interface (API). First group flying to US First group flying to US The first set of 49 white South Africans to be granted refugee status by President Donald Trump’s administration are on their way to the US. On Sunday they boarded a flight from Johannesburg which is due to land in Washington DC later on Monday. This comes after a weekend of speculation about when the Afrikaners would leave for America, amid criticism from the South African government who described the US resettlement scheme as “politically motivated”. Relations between South Africa and the US have been tense for months, after an executive order in February in which President Trump stated that Afrikaners were victims of “racial discrimination”. The US has criticised domestic South African policy, accusing the government of seizing land from white farmers without any compensation – something which the southern African nation says has not happened. Bilateral tensions have been tense for months as President Trump tasked his administration with formulating plans to potentially resettle Afrikaners in the US. In March, South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled after accusing President Trump of using “white victimhood as a dog whistle”, leading to the US accusing Mr Rasool of “race-baiting”. The current group of refugees comprises 49 people, who are expected to land in Washington DC later on Monday, before continuing to Texas. President Trump’s openness to accepting Afrikaner refugees comes as the US has engaged in a wider crackdown on migrants and asylum seekers from other countries. Dino Quake is an earth-shaking Jurassic platformer coming next month Dino Quake is an earth-shaking Jurassic platformer coming next month Dino Quake is an upcoming retro platformer arriving June 19th Jump to the top then come crashing down to cause quakes that incapacitate enemies Unlock new characters and explore different paths towards challenging bosses In a genre as well-trodden as the platformer, it’s how new releases make themselves stand out mechanically which can make the difference between success and failure. So today’s subject, Dino Quake, certainly does with an interesting, earth-shattering take on platforming with an extra Jurassic twist! Dino Quake’s core gameplay mechanic is simple. You need to make your way upwards and drop down to create an earthquake, which will incapacitate enemies, and then boot them sideways to dispose of them properly. It means you’ll need to not only make your way up in the first place, but also do so while planning out your descent too. It’s not surprising, then, that Dino Quake is selling itself based on ‘pure arcade gameplay’. But it’s not just a riff on older platformers, as you’ll also have access to multiple paths with which to explore the various worlds of Dino Quake, ensuring there’s always something new to discover. Crunchy! Naturally, there’s also all the usual conventions of the retro platformer. Which means funky chiptune music and gorgeously crunchy 16-bit graphics to enjoy. With unlockable characters to boot, Dino Quake definitely has a little more depth than it gives itself credit for with that ‘pure arcade gameplay’. The best part is that you’ll be able to nab Dino Quake no matter what platform you’re on, as it’s set to arrive for iOS and Android June 19th in just a little over a month. So if you’ve been looking to lay the hammer (er, scaly feet?) down on some no-good reptiles, maybe Dino Quake is for you? Want to put your platforming skills to the test? Think you’ve played everything there is to satisfy that need on mobile? Well, why not dig into our list of the top 25 best platformers for iOS and Android to put that to the test! U.S. stocks with the most China revenue exposure that could win if long-term deal is reached U.S. stocks with the most China revenue exposure that could win if long-term deal is reached As investors cheer the trade negotiation developments between the U.S. and China, some stocks could be in for an extra bump based on their revenue exposure to the Asian economic giant. The countries agreed to cut tariffs for the time being following negotiations that took place over the weekend in Switzerland, which U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called “very productive.” Both countries slashed their taxes by 115% for 90 days, leaving the U.S.’s levy at 30% and China’s at 10%. Stocks with relatively high exposure to China took a hit after President Donald Trump first announced his plans for broad and steep tariffs on several foreign countries last month. While Trump soon after put many of those duties on pause, his decision to hike China’s to a whopping 145% raised fears of a trade war between the world’s two largest economies. Given now that tensions have cooled significantly, stocks whose fortunes are tied to the Asian country may see outsized gains from here. If a long-term deal is reached, these stocks could be the biggest comeback winners. Goldman Sachs compiled a list of names whose revenue is significantly connected to the region. Specifically, Goldman screened for companies with revenue exposure of at least 25% to the Greater China region, as of 2023 fillings. Goldman considers Taiwan as part of this area. Here’s 10 that made the list: Multiple stocks on the list rallied before the bell on Monday as investors took the trade discussion updates into account. Megacap tech titan Nvidia shares popped close to 5% in premarket trading. The company, which has 39% revenue exposure to the region, is one of several chipmakers that passed the screen. Meanwhile, Broadcom and Qualcomm both gained more than 6%. Broadcom’s regional exposure is also north of 30%, while Qualcomm’s is above 60%. Casino operators Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts each jumped more than 3%. Both are known for their presences in Macao, a ******** gambling destination that has been dubbed the “Las Vegas of Asia.” Source link #U.S #stocks #China #revenue #exposure #win #longterm #deal #reached Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Factbox-What have China and the United States agreed to in Geneva? Factbox-What have China and the United States agreed to in Geneva? By Lewis Jackson BEIJING (Reuters) – China and the United States announced a truce in their trade war on Monday after talks in Geneva that will roll back the bulk of tariffs and other countermeasures by Wednesday. The United States is dropping the extra tariffs it imposed on China this year to 30% from 145%, while China is cutting them to 10% from 125%. Tariffs imposed before April 2, including those dating back to U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term, and other restrictions, such as the U.S. measures to end low-value package tariff exemptions, known as the “de minimis” rule, appear to remain. TARIFFS ARE COMING DOWN, BUT UNEVENLY AND NOT TO ZERO The United States has agreed to adjust or remove three executive orders, which collectively put 115% tariffs on imports from China. Washington agreed to drop its so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs from 34% to 10% for 90 days, and remove all tariffs imposed during the ****-for-tat escalation that followed. China has matched the de-escalation, removing all but 10% of the tariffs imposed since April 2, leaving the current rate at 10%. However, that leaves China still facing a 30% tariff once duties imposed before April 2 are counted, including the two rounds of fentanyl tariffs imposed in February and March. ******** products ranging from electric vehicles, steel and aluminium will also still face separate tariffs imposed over the past several years. SOME NON-TARIFF BARRIERS PAUSED China also committed to removing non-tariff countermeasures imposed against the United States since April 2, although it remains unclear how some of these measures will be walked back. As part of its retaliation in April, China added rare earths to its controlled export list, opened an anti-dumping probe into chemical firm DuPont’s China business and blacklisted some U.S. defense and tech firms. The wording of the agreement suggests those firms will be removed from the list, which barred trade and investment with China and the anti-dumping probe shelved. The statement only said countermeasures imposed after April 2 will be removed, which would therefore not include a dozen companies blacklisted in March, and the anti-dumping investigation into Google announced in February. DuPont did not immediately respond to a request for comment. QUESTIONS REMAIN OVER RARE EARTHS In the case of rare earths, because China’s decision applied to all countries, it is unclear whether it will count as a U.S.-specific countermeasure under the agreement. There is no mention of the U.S. in the original Ministry of Commerce announcement, which required all exporters to seek licenses before shipping seven types of rare earths. Dubbed Message IDs, it leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to scan the SMS inbox and identify messages like, but not limited to, OTPs, delivery updates, ticket booking status, and more, from verified businesses. As per Truecaller, these messages are displayed with a green check mark in the inbox. Message IDs on Truecaller Truecaller says it has introduced Message IDs in India and 30 other countries. This feature leverages AI and large language models (LLMs) to carry out on-device scanning of the SMS inbox to identify important business messages. The company emphasises that the user data stays safe due to on-device processing. Message IDs on Truecaller are not limited to Premium subscribers but available for all. It is introduced with support for several global and Indian languages including English, Hindi, Swahili, and Spanish. As per the company, it requires the “Read SMS” and “Display Over Other Apps” permissions to provide real-time notifications of critical alerts. These appear with a check mark to confirm that the received message is from a legitimate and verified business. This includes messages from bank alerts, OTPs, delivery updates, flight itineraries, and payment reminders. In addition to the above, Truecaller can detect and highlight other important messages too, even if they fall outside of the conventional SMS category. Message IDs also summarise the key details in messages leveraging AI and highlight what’s important, enabling the user to take quick action. It appears above the original text and carries the “AI generated summary” tag. The introduction of AI-powered Message IDs on Truecaller builds upon the recent addition of API support for iPhone that enables features such as real-time caller identification and automatic blocking of spam telephone calls on Apple devices. This brings the iOS version of the app at par with its Android counterpart, which has offered the aforementioned features for years now. Pope Leo jokes about reporters’ applause at start of first audience Pope Leo jokes about reporters’ applause at start of first audience STORY: :: Pope Leo jokes at his first meeting with journalists that he hopes they will stay awake :: ******** City :: May 12, 2025 “Good morning, and thank you for this wonderful reception. They say when they clap at the beginning, it doesn’t matter much. If you’re still awake at the end and you still want to applaud, thank you very much.” In his subsequent speech, Leo called on journalists to help bring an end to a polarising “war of words” made of partisan and ideological attacks and not give space to fanaticism and hatred. Speaking to thousands of members of the media from around the world who covered his election and the death of his predecessor, Leo also called for the release of reporters jailed for doing their jobs. He added artificial intelligence had to be used with “responsibility and discernment”. Marvel Rivals Called Out for Comp Match 5v6 Flaw That’s Almost a Guaranteed Loss Marvel Rivals Called Out for Comp Match 5v6 Flaw That’s Almost a Guaranteed Loss Marvel Rivals has previously been accused of putting bots in competitive matches, which was initially a thing in quick matches and casual play. However, things have been getting more serious as the game is now understaffing teams that render a match to be a guaranteed loss for the team affected by this issue. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that a player might get disconnected during a match, which leaves the affected team a pair of hands short, but by the time Marvel Rivals provides a replacement, the match becomes dangerously unfair which leads to the affected team losing the entire match. Players call for instant match cancellations whenever a player disconnects in Marvel Rivals A post in the Marvel Rivals subreddit by a user called psilopsilocybin is causing quite the uproar in the community, calling out the game for not finding replacements on time or canceling a competitive match whenever a player gets disconnected. It’s a frustrating issue especially in comp as the team affected has to play with 5 players against an opponent team of 6 players, providing the latter with an unfair advantage. The user explains how the game takes a minute to provide a replacement for the disconnected player and how the affected team is forced to play with a disadvantage, which ultimately leads to an inevitable defeat. To solve this problem, multiple players have called for canceling comp matches as soon as players are affected by disconnections and server issues. Here are some of the reactions to the Reddit post, and a majority of them have come forward with their own experiences of the said issue: Comment byu/psilopsilocybin from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/psilopsilocybin from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/psilopsilocybin from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/psilopsilocybin from discussion inmarvelrivals It’s open revolt at this point and the uproar is only going to get worse if NetEase doesn’t come up with a solution for this issue. What makes this situation even more unfair is the fact that the teams who are affected by this issue will face a guaranteed loss and get demoted while the opponent team will be promoted without a fair match. A lot of Marvel Rivals players do play ranked to hone their competitive skills, so this issue shouldn’t be ignored. NetEase’s updates have been consistent so far and the hope is they release an update addressing and solving this issue, making comp matches fair and playable again. One of Marvel Rivals‘ Season 2 comp change gets even worse with this issue Comp is messy in Season 2 of Marvel Rivals | Image Credit: NetEase Games With Season 2’s update, Marvel Rivals introduced the system of distributing ranked points based on individual performance rather than team performance, which is how it was previously. This led to backlash from players who were main strategists and resulted in support strikes, as duelists would score more points due to their inherent role in getting more kills than strategists. Paired with the disconnection issue mentioned above, the game is bound to lose more players if this issue persists. Apart from this, devs should also take strict measures against problems like smurfing as soon as possible or at least acknowledge them if they want to retain their player base and keep them happy. So, what do you think about the disconnection issue in Marvel Rivals? Have you personally experienced this problem? Or do you prefer to stick to quick matches and casual gameplay? What to do if you’re charged one What to do if you’re charged one A new U.S. rule that requires hotel and short-term lodging companies to disclose so-called “junk fees” starts Monday. Announced by the Federal Trade Commission in December, the rule takes direct aim at the widely loathed charges, which can appear as “resort,” “destination” or “hospitality service” fees and purport to grant perks that travelers either don’t want or already expect to receive. These include “premium” internet service and access to a hotel gym. The rule, which also applies to live event ticketing companies, was designed to curtail a practice that allowed businesses to charge more “without looking like you’re raising prices,” Cathy Mansfield from the Case Western Reserve Law School told CNBC in December. The professor, who specializes in consumer and commercial law, had one caveat: “I really hope the Trump administration doesn’t cut the enforcement staff at the FTC and the CFPB.” But since the rule was announced, the Trump administration has pushed to eliminate nearly 90% of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s staff and fired two FTC commissioners — actions which are being challenged in the U.S. court system. As a result, Mansfield said she now believes the new rule is less likely to protect consumers. “With the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau already incapacitated by the Trump administration, there probably won’t be new protections for consumers — a rollback of existing protections where possible, and absolutely no enforcement of rules. This means no protection at all for consumers,” she said. In response, Chris Mufarrige, the director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, told CNBC that the agency “is working hard to protect consumers and will continue to pursue enforcement actions against companies that violate the law, including through the new deceptive fee rule.” The Trump Administration also targeted fees in the live entertainment industry through an executive order on March 31 that directed the FTC to ensure price transparency “at all stages of the ticket-purchase process.” The CFPB did not reply to CNBC’s request for comment. Disclosure, but not elimination, of fees Laurent Bacinski, a French citizen, was hit by undisclosed junk fees during a trip to New York City. He pre-paid for his trip through a travel app but was still charged a $500 deposit by his hotel at check-in, from which the hotel deducted taxes and a nightly “destination fee.” These fees provided high-speed internet, discounts on sightseeing tours and a credit at the hotel mini-mart. “The destination fee is forced ***** of services I don’t need,” he told CNBC Travel. Disclosure of these fees is the crux of the FTC’s rule, which does not aim to eliminate them, but rather to ensure travelers know they exist. “The Junk Fees rule is rooted in a simple but powerful principle: transparency,” said Mansfield. “When consumers can see the full price up front — whether they’re booking a hotel, buying concert tickets or paying a service fee — they’re in a better position to make informed decisions and avoid being misled.” This transparency has already begun, said Lauren Wolfe, counsel for Travelers United, a non-profit organization that has sued Hyatt, Hilton, Sonesta and Accor over the issue of resort fees. “We have seen a lot more voluntary compliance since the rule was announced in December,” she said. Airbnb announced in April that it began displaying cleaning and service fees upfront for customers worldwide. Wolfe referenced another bill, the Hotel Fees Transparency Act of 2025, which cleared the U.S. House of Representatives in April, and is now set to go before the Senate. “The combo of the FTC rule, plus a bill that has bipartisan support — and looks like it will pass — in Congress shows that ending hidden hotel resort fees is one issue today that unites all Americans,” she said. If you’re charged a ‘junk fee’ CNBC Travel analyzed 10 booking websites for a two-night stay at Balboa Bay Resort, a hotel in Newport Beach, California that charges a $40 daily resort fee, as stated on the hotel’s website. Of the 10 sites, seven disclosed the fee in various ways — either as a “destination fee,” “property fee” or “property service charge” — and three did not. If travelers encounter a hotel or short-term rental charging undisclosed fees, Mansfield recommends filing a complaint with the FTC. Penalties for violating the new rule can exceed $50,000. “The FTC has a really easy-to-use online complaint system, and they tally complaints that help them see what’s happening the market,” she said. She also suggested using the CFPB’s online complaint system, she said. “They actually forward the complaint to the company … that will sometimes get things resolved because companies don’t want to be in the crosshairs of the CFPB,” she said. Mansfield said travelers can also contact the consumer fraud division of their state Attorney General’s office. “I would say complain to both federal and state” authorities, she said. If all else fails, travelers can also consider airing their complaint on social media. “Sometimes with companies, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” Source link #youre #charged Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
