Local Government: Councils to be forced to forecast rate rises in cost-of-living win for ratepayers

Councils will be barred from slapping surprise rate rises on ratepayers each year, and instead be forced to declare future annual increases under a new raft of local government reforms introduced to Parliament on Thursday.

Under a new model, councils will have to forecast rate increases over a number of years, giving ratepayers certainty over how much they will be charged.
