Peoria sculpture honors local legend

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Peoria sculpture is being dedicated to a well-known local figure.

The sculpture, called “Flight of the Cakewalkers”, is located in Liberty Park on the riverfront. On Wednesday, Peoria officials gathered for an official dedication ceremony.

The painted steel and cast bronze sculpture was created by Preston Jackson in 2001. Peoria resident, Joy Kessler sponsored the restoration to honor her husband, Steve Shostrom.

Shostrom is known for opening Running Central, creating the Illinois Valley Striders, and is the founder of the Steamboat Classic.

“Today, we rededicate this sculpture  not just as a work of art,  but as a living,  breathing piece of our community’s heart and soul.  This rededication is made all the more meaningful as we honor  Steve Shostrom and his efforts as a beloved riverfront and community advocate,” said Peoria Mayor Rita Ali.

Joy Kessler added, “Steve has always felt the Riverfront should be the crowning jewel of downtown Peoria. He worked for years with groups to complete the multi-use trail and encouraged recreation and the arts  to draw people to this space.”

The sculpture was first displayed at Navy Pier in Chicago, and then re-located to the riverfront shortly after.
