‘They are extraordinary individuals’: NRL Hall of Fame to feature six women following historic announcement

History will be made next week with six of the biggest names in the game to become the first women inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame.

Natalie Dwyer, Katrina Fanning, Tarsha Gale, Veronica White, Karyn Murphy and Tahnee Norris will be recognised for their incredible contributions to rugby league at a formal ceremony next Wednesday when the next Immortal will also be revealed.

“This is a historic moment for the game – our first ever female players inducted into rugby league’s highest honour, the Hall of Fame,” ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said.

“This class includes some of the great trailblazers of women’s rugby league. They all significantly helped to put women’s rugby league in the strong position it is today.”

The women’s game has grown exponentially in recent years, and it wouldn’t have been possible without these six trailblazers who have also played key roles in helping the NRLW become the juggernaut it is today.

Dwyer captained the Jillaroos in their inaugural Test match in 1995 alongside Fanning and Gale who both have major competitions named after them.

Murphy took the Titans to the NRLW grand final last year, with the player of the match medal named after her.

Norris was a veteran of 33 Tests and has enjoyed success as Maroons coach, while Whyte also played 17 matches for her country and has the community award named in her honour.

“It’s a privilege to see the game take this step and recognise female players in the National Rugby League Hall of Fame,” V’landys said.

“Each of the inductees has played a significant role in the growth of the women’s game and the game itself. They are extraordinary individuals who worked extremely hard to put women’s rugby league on the map.

“Women’s rugby league is as popular as it is now because of the efforts of the inductees.

“Each of them has also continued to play a significant role in the game after retirement.

“With the NRLW and women’s game flying, it is critical as a game that we pay tribute to those who have dug the well.

“These players will be forever known as being part of the first group of female players to join the NRL Hall of Fame.”

The announcement comes a day after the NRL confirmed some of the greatest male stars of all time – including Cameron Smith, Greg Inglis and Benji Marshall – will join the Hall of Fame next week.
