Gold Coast stabbing: Beloved Emmanuel College Year 5 student Sophie Wang identified as victim

A young girl who ***** after her throat was allegedly slashed in a horrific ******* has been identified as a beloved Year 5 student from a prestigious Gold Coast college.

Sophie Wang, 10, was discovered fatally injured at her home in Emerald Lakes in Carrara by a male relative who called triple-0 about 6pm Monday.

A 46-year-old woman said to be known to Sophie has been charged with her *******. She was arrested by Gold Coast detectives at a nearby street around 10.25 pm.

The woman is due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

Sophie was a student at Emmanuel College.

In a letter to parents, Emmanuel College principal Dan Brown on Wednesday morning confirmed the distressing news.

“We are devastated by this incident and know it will profoundly impact our school community.

“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the child, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”

Mr Brown said counselling staff would be available to support grieving students.

“Our priority is the wellbeing of our students and staff, and we will do everything possible to help our community over the coming days,” he said.

“Please be assured we are here for all in our community — students, staff and parents — and these support services are available to anyone in need.

“While words cannot ease the shock and pain of such a tragic loss, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Inspector Lou Serafim told reporters at the scene emergency services were alerted to the “traumatic” incident by a relative of the girl.

“At approximately six o’clock this evening police received a triple-0 emergency call about a 10-year-old girl who was located deceased in a unit,” she said.

“At this point, we are treating the ****** of the 10-year-old girl as suspicious, and investigations are currently underway about the demise of the girl.

“The triple-0 call was made by a relative who was at the incident scene when they located the 10-year-old girl. He is being very cooperative and is assisting police with the investigation.”

Insp Serafim said the staff who attended as first responders and emergency services from the Queensland Ambulance Service entered a scene that “was quite traumatic”.

“These officers and the paramedics are receiving internal counselling about the incident that they were exposed to,” she said.
